Cashless fare system faces deadline delay The government plan to ban cash transactions in all public transport vehicles, which is scheduled to take effect from tomorrow could be put off indefinitely. This is after it emerged that service providers
are yet to be issued with certificates. Companies seeking to offer cashless fare payment must get Central Bank’s approval as a way of protecting commuters’ deposits. However, they are yet
to be cleared with just hours remaining to the deadline. “The service providers were required to get clearance certificates from the Central Bank but they are yet to be issued with the same,”
said Mr Godfrey Akuma, Nairobi County coordinator for the Matatu Owners Association. Apart from the service providers not being cleared for the roll out, Mr Akuma also cited
lack of public awareness on the use of the cash less fare payment method as another deterrent.
