From Page 1 There is need to shift focus from knowledge and memory to a system that addresses needs of learners in the production of marketable graduates.

Employers have often complained that graduates from local universities lack critical workplace skills that make them unemployable.

The complaint was

vindicated by a recent research by the InterUniversity Council for East Africa which found out that more than 50 per cent of graduates in the region are ill-prepared for the job market.

Kenya, which was found to be the best in East Africa in training learners, was found to have 51 per cent of graduates unfit for jobs.

However, Inoorero University Vice Chancellor Koi Tirima says the problem is not with learners but the design of the university systems.

“The issue is not with graduates but institutions,” said Ms Tirima. “If we want a graduate who is not only knowledgeable, but also has competences, dress appropriately, a team worker

and one who beats deadlines, one who can think critically and are tolerant of different opinion, perfect training by an institution is what we need,” she says.

“Relevance is not just in knowledge but how we learn and what we learn and its application,” Prof Tirima told XNews.

The don says there are first class degree holders who cannot solve simple work place problems.

Prof Tirima says a stern and carefully thought on specific disciplines should be first dealt with by institutions in order to provide competent students.

“You can’t have, for example, a student gong for ICT in year 1, and the curriculum

is never revised when the student nears exit,” she says. “With ICT, things happen so fast so we need to come up with an education system that addresses the needs of graduates and the industry rather than focus on knowledge and memorization,” says the don.

She says foresight is a key prerequisite for the generation of market-ready graduates.

“The skills for 24th C are the ability to ask the right question, find appropriate information and the ability of that information to add value to mitigate, to resolve and to address that question,” she says.

“If we still cherish information we get from

8-4-4 system, then we are lost,” says Prof Tirima. “That information is irrelevant, old and may provide students with information that they don’t know how to use.”

To address the problem requires the application of problem-based approach teaching that involves real life examples to apply to learning in order to provide market-ready students.

“In most universities and colleges, they are doing 70 per cent sit-in exams and 30 per cent hands-on projects. If the opposite could be allowed or a 50-50 percentage situation on both sit-in and hands-on examinations, we will be on the right track,” says Prof Tirima.

Her public success may, however, be shortlived after a photo has emerged of the teenager hunting big game in Africa. The pastime has tarnished the reputation of other public faces.

L’Oreal, which has come under criticism for testing cosmetics on animals in China, has not made comments.

The photo which brought Ms Despiegelaere to the attention of L’Oreal executives was taken as she cheered on Belgium during the group stages of the World Cup decked out in a Belgian horn hat, and smeared with patriotic face paint.

Riding a wave of popularity after the photo of her in the stands was picked up by the Twittersphere, Ms Despiegelaere set up a Facebook fan page which amassed over 200,000 likes in a little over a week.

Man commits suicide after wife leaves him A man has committed suicide after his wife allegedly eloped with another man to Dubai.

40 year-old Misiko Amunga was found hanging in his house in Malava, Kakamega County for what neighbours intimate was occasioned by too much stress following the loss of his wife.

The neighbours said the man has been stressed and his health deteriorated after his wife of 20 years left him before being spotted with another man with whom she is said to have left for Dubai.

Half of Kenyans believe that Russian President, Vladimir Putin is doing a good job. A new study released by global trend surveyor, the Pew Research Centre has revealed that Putin’s leadership continues to inspire at least a little confidence worldwide.

The Russian/Ukrainian crisis concerns, Crimea, a peninsula that is connected to southern Ukraine, a country in Europe. For a long time, Crimea was part of Russia.

Then, in 1954, it became part of Ukraine. The crisis today is about which country should control it now. Russia’s parliament voted to admit Crimea into its country in late March 2014, and Putin

signed a law to complete the process. But Russia had been moving to take the peninsula, and it took control of several Ukrainian military bases.

Ukraine is angry about the developments and the EU has been trying to intervene.

As the European Union considers further sanctions on Russia for its role in the standoff in Ukraine, Russia is becoming broadly unpopular in many countries around the globe and increasingly disliked in Europe and the United States.

However, one in every two Kenyans is confident that Putin, the ‘Russian Bear’ has what it takes to handle international affairs.

UNDP plegdes support for Beyond Zero drive Kenya is likely to achieve improved maternal health and reduced child mortality after a UN agency promised to support the Beyond Zero campaign.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Wednesday said it will support the campaign, an initiative of First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, by rolling out mobile clinics in all the 47 counties, starting with the 10 poorest.

Speaking during launch of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) report, 2014, UNDP Economic Advisor Wilmot Reeves said there is much that has to be done towards achieving these goals. He said the UN will support Kenya in realising the First Lady’s campaign.

The First Lady has been at the fore front in this campaign, which is also inscribed in the MDGs. She ran the London Marathon

in April this year to raise funds for this project.

Last week she launched the first fully fitted Beyond Zero mobile clinic for Taita Taveta County.

The clinics aim to cater for the mother who travel for more than 20 kilometres in this remote area in search of health services for themselves and children.

During the launch at State House, Nairobi, the Mrs. Kenyatta said her office will prioritise counties that are most vulnerable to HIV before reaching out to the rest of the country.

Signatories to the MDGs are rushing to beat next year deadline when they are expected to have made landmark improvements to lives of their citizens.

Reducing child mortality and improving maternal health are fourth and fifth respectively in the eight point-target set in the year 2000 .

House committee to decide fate of IEBC commissioners next week All the nine commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will know their fate next week when the parliamentary Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs submits to MPs its report on a petition seeking to the electoral bosses sacked.

The committee yesterday completed hearings on the petition. It also received written submission from the other interested parties and will retreat to compile its report.

Petitioner Robert Wafula Buke gave his submissions yesterday, a day after the commissioners, led by

chairman Isaac Hassan, appeared before the parliamentary team.

Mr Hassan urged the MPs to throw out the petition saying they had done nothing wrong during the elections.

But Buke yesterday maintained that the electoral bosses were

incompetent to have ignored blatant election malpractices in the 2013 general elections and that he has enough evidence to back his claims.

“What I have given the committee is enough evidence and I hope they will vindicate my position,”

Mr Buke said after his submissions yesterday. He claims that IEBC chairman Issac Hassan the eight other commissioners were not accountable, verifiable and accurate. Mr Buke said they failed Kenyans by not conducting free and fair elections.

City Hall hikes illegal garbage dumping fines The Nairobi County Government has proposed heftier penalties for illegal dumping of waste to make the capital city cleaner.

Governor Evans Kidero, who flagged off another 14 garbage collection trucks on Wednesday, said the council plans to raise fines for illegal dumping from Sh2, 000 to Sh40, 000 to clump down on the menace.

Large parts of the county are choking in waste as the county collects only 40 per cent of the refuse while another 20 per cent is disposed of by the private sector. The remaining waste is disposed of through burning, dumping in pits or other illegal methods. A Solid Waste Management Bill is in the pipeline to guide the collection of waste matter in estates by private sector players contracted by City Hall. The companies will be selected to clean up estates as City Hall regulates collection fees.

Private collectors negotiate deals and pricing directly with residents.

The county government has divided the city into clusters of estates with each region assigned to a firm that will collect garbage.

The rate at which the firms charge households will be based on income levels of residents.

The project is expected to start in August in Kilimani, Kangemi and Kileleshwa. City Hall has started issuing tenders for the zone. Residents of Kilimani and Kileleshwa will pay between Sh500 and Sh750 a month as Kangemi counterparts pay Sh150.

Earlier this month, the governor’s plans for a cleaner Nairobi were dealt a blow after an allocation of Sh350 million to buy 40 refuse trucks and garbage bins was shaved off City Hall’s budget for the fiscal year.

Bad weather forces govt to lower growth predictions Poor weather conditions that have led to acute food shortage in some counties will force the Government to review the growth forecast for the next financial year.

National Treasury Cabinet Secretary on Thursday told a media briefing in Nairobi the Government will relook at its growth projections that had been pegged at 5.8 for this year.

He said unfavourable weather conditions and slow absorption of resources by ministries and county government had led to below par performance of the economy, especially during the first three months of this year “The economy grew at 4.1 per cent in the first quarter, lower than what we had initially projected. I think we had based our assumption on favourable weather conditions and better absorption of resources by ministries and counties,” he said.

“We will be re-assessing our growth projections after the second quarter. I would be more cautious to quickly revise our growth focus until the second quarter,” he said.

The announcement comes a few days after the World Bank also revised downwards its growth projections for Kenya from 5.2 to 4.7 per cent for the year.

61 killed as Israeli war planes pound Gaza At least 61 people have been killed and more than 550 injured in airstrikes aimed at Gaza as the Israeli-Palestinian war escalates.

Palenstinian Health Ministry said eight women and 11 children, including an 18-month-old baby and an 80-year-old woman were among the dead.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have so far struck 550 Hamas

targets since launching their offensive on Monday.

The IDF said the targets included 60 rocket launchers, 31 tunnels and the homes of 11 senior Hamas leaders, which the IDF described as “command centers.”

In one airstrike on Wednesday, two children and their mother were among five people killed when Israeli forces targeted their house. Some members of

the family are believed to have links to Hamas, Palestinian security sources said.

Israeli airstrikes pounded targets in Gaza, killing scores of people Wednesday as dozens of militant rockets streaked into Israel.

The continued Hamas barrage prompted Israel’s Prime Minister to step up the offensive against the militant group.

Study says Malaria parasites hide in marrow Malaria parasites can hide inside the bone marrow and evade the body’s defences, research confirms.

The discovery could lead to new drugs or vaccines to block transmission.

The research, published in Science Translation Medicine fills a “key knowledge gap” in the biology of the disease, Harvard scientists said.

Carried by mosquitoes, the parasite causes the most severe form of malaria, which leads to more than 500,000 deaths every year globally.

The study found the parasites could bury into bone marrow, where they escaped the immune system and caused disease.

The idea that they hide in the bone marrow while they mature has been around for decades.

But a team led by Prof Matthias Marti of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, pinpointed exactly where the parasites found sanctuaries in bone marrow by analysing tissue samples from autopsies.

The discovery was “exciting” because it identified “a key knowledge gap in the biology of the parasite”, it added.

It is now hoped that this may help scientists devise a way to target parasites hiding out in bone marrow with new drugs or vaccines.

The most recent figures from the World Health Organization suggest malaria killed more than 600,000 people in 2012, with 90 percent of the deaths occurring in sub-Saharan Africa.

Alibhai Centre starts training for artisans

Alibhai Shariff and Sons (ABS), a leading hardware and retail company, has launched a ‘Centre of Excellence’ along Thika Superhighway.

The centre, which has been launched in partnership with the Ministry of Science, Education and Technology is located at the Thika Road Mall. The Centre will enable artisans access free voca-

tional training in carpentry, metal fabrication, painting and electrical works.

The Centre was launched as a response to growing consumer demands.

The manufacturing sector is growing at an annual rate of about 10 per cent and comprises more than 700 established enterprises. It directly employs more than 200,000 Kenyans.

Experts from the Kenya High Commission say the sector has wide range of opportunities, especially in assembling automotive parts, electronics, chemicals, metal and engineering.

“Developing competence among artisans will help empower small scale businesses and individuals,” said a spokesperson for ABS. Peter Kariuki, the Gover-

nance, Accountability and Delivery Advisor to the President, highlighted the importance of the initiative during the Centre’s launch.

He said there is a shortage of international-level artisans.

Practicing artisans who undergo the training will be endorsed by the National Construction Authority, the regulating body for the industry.

Home-made pastries crown Kenya baked goods industry The global baked foods industry is expected to be worth $310 billion (Sh27 trillion) within the next year.

Kenya’s baking sector, that includes tha making and selling of bread, cereals, cakes, biscuits and scones, is worth Sh2 billion. This is less than 1 per cent of the world pastry market. However, it is growing at a rapid rate and creating hundreds of jobs every year.

It directly and indirectly employs more than 100,000 people.

Research firm, Global Industry Analytics says the sector has witnessed rapid growth due to changing lifestyles.

“Busy consumers are quick to buy convenient baked snack foods,” says the firm.

Factors fuelling the growing

demand include the convenience the foods offer, their cost and the health benefits of baked products. This is unlike fruits, vegetables and meats which contain herbicides and hormones.

Financial research company, Euromonitor International, says Kenya is going through a revolution in which supermarkets like Uchumi, Nakumatt, Tuskys and Naivas are baking goods to “fiercely compete with leading traditional bakers.”

“People are now more likely to go Tuskys for bread as it is freshly baked,” says a spokesperson for Euromonitor.

Home-made baked goods producers control 42 per cent of the Kenyan market because they are found in urban areas.

Brand launch fuels drinks market war

Competition is getting stiffer in the non-alcoholic drinks market with the entry of ready-to-drink coffee and tomato juice from Kevian Kenya.

The additional venture, which cost the company Sh2billion to set up, is owned by the Afia and Pick N Peel juice brand company.

Both brands (coffee and tomato juice) are packed in 300 millilitre bottles.

The coffee is available in lemon, plain and energy malts.

The company founder, Kimani Rugendo, says the almost one month old juices are available in the market.

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), a regulator for the banking sector, has said that the lending rate for local banks will remain at 8.5 per cent.

The number, popularly known as the Central Bank Rate (CBR), is a sort of guid-

line for banks to set their own lending rates. While lenders are allowed to charge higher than the CBR, they can only go up to a certain limit. This means that a lower CBR is good for anyone taking a loan while a higher one spells doom for borrowers. Njuguna Ndung’u, Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, said the rate will remain in place until January 2015, as long as the banking sector remains stable. The announcement, which Ndung’u made on

Tuesday, follows a move by the government to enforce transparency among local banks. Using a scale known as the Kenya Banks Reference Rate (KBRR),customers will see what rates local banks are offering for loans.

The new reference rate was launched by the Kenya Banker’s Association as part of an effort to lower lending rates, which businesses and consumers have long complained are too high.

“What this rate does is

introduce transparency such that a customer can tell the actual interest rate a bank is charging,” said Habil Olaka, CEO for the KBA. Lending rates will go down in 2015 following a promise by the government to spur development in the country. Over a week ago, President Uhuru Kenyatta said that the Sh175 billion Eurobond, a loan to Kenya from foreign lenders, will be used to promote development, create jobs and encourage borrowing.

New JKIA terminal to ease passenger traffic

The flow of passengers through the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is expected to ease when work on Terminal 1 of the airport in six months’ time.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Managing Director, Lucy Mbugua says the new terminal will be able to handle an additional 2.5 million passengers a year. Currently, JKIA can process 6.5 million passengers a year.

The new terminal, which will be complete by December, will raise the current passenger numbers to 9 million a year.

It will also add 1,500 parking spaces, greatly easing the parking nightmare at the airport. The KAA has spent

more than Sh7 billion on the project. Speaking to Parliament’s Public Investment Committee last week, Mbugua said the added terminal will meet international standards, enabling passengers to leave within minutes of their arrival. Commenting on the progress of the project, outgoing Kenya Airways CEO, Dr. Titus Naikuni said it “will be a huge step towards efforts to expand and modernize JKIA and transform it into a world-class travel hub of choice in the region.”

The project started in December 2010. Technical issues have put it over a year behind schedule since it should have been completed

by August 2013.

Translation course enhances understanding in factions

Technology and globalisation have revolutionised communication into gadgets.

But the art of translation and interpretation remains in the hands of humans. People have to be directly involved in enhancing understanding between two or more groups using symbols of communication. Even within a language, words can be used differently to relay specific meanings to certain disciplines. The diverse usage calls for those who can understand the symbols used by the two sides. A degree in translation studies equips you with skills to be a ‘go-between’ two or more sections.

Course category: Bachelor of Arts in Translation Studies.

Duration: Four academic

years, offered both full time and part-time.

College: St. Paul’s University Entry requirement: At least a C+ in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, with a C+ in English. Those with KACE certificates must have a minimum of two principal passes or its equivalent. A diploma in related area with at least a credit in English can also secure admission.

Fees: It costs about Sh72, 100 every semester or about Sh576, 800 to complete the degree.

Careers: working as interpreters and translators in courts of law, pubic proceedings, where participants speak different languages or disciplines, encoding and decoding oral and sign languages.

XN: What does your job entail?

BO: I have two roles; I train students how to fly aircraft and fly charter planes.

XN: How many hours do you work?

BO: I don’t have a regular time frame but on average I log in three to six hours of flying per day all year

round. This includes weekends and holidays as long as there is a client.

XN: What qualifications do you need?

BO: For a commercial pilot, one needs a minimum KCSE grade C+, Maths, English, Geography and Physics are important.

You will also need a valid

Commercial Pilots Licence from a Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) training institution like Skymax.

One also needs to be physically fit to fly a plane by passing a medical examination conducted by an aviation doctor appointed by the governing authority, KCAA.

XN: Was this your dream career?

BO: Yes. I have always been curious and fascinated about flying and I knew I wanted to fly someday.

XN: Does your job interfere with social life?

BO: I always get to hang out and have a good time but sometimes it interferes when I have to fly over the weekend or on holidays.

XN: What is the best part of your job?

BO: Flying is fun. It is a perfect blend of art and science.

Flying to a new place is always exciting and of course the magnificent views from above! It is the best job.

XN: Worst part of the job?

BO: As much as flying is fun, it can sometimes get challenging.

I would say flying in unpleasant weather conditions and system malfunctions which is rare is the worst part.

XN: Advice to other people who want to venture into your field?

BO: Keep focus, work hard at it and go for it.

Ingredients 3 cups fresh raspberries 1 cup gin 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup fresh lime juice 1/4 teaspoon (scant) rose water 3 cups crushed ice Preparation 1. Mix first five ingredients in bowl. Let it sit for 1 hour at room temperature, occasionally stirring and crushing some of the berries.

2. Place 3/4 cup ice in each of 4 glasses. Top each with 3/4 cup raspberry mixture.

3. Pour the mixture in the glasses let it sit for five minutes and serve cold for best results. All these can be prepared earlier before your company arrives 4. The preparation takes slightly over an hour but for an unforgettable drink thanks to its sweet smooth taste.

Kenya will hit Lesotho, says coach

Suspended national team coach Adel Amrouche is confident Harambee Stars will prevail in the upcoming two-legged African Cup of Nations ties against Lesotho.

His comments follow the Confederation of African Football (Caf) two-match ban on Amrouche for his altercation with the referee during Kenya’s tie against Comoros in Moroni last month.

Amrouche is not new to controversy. He was banned against Nigeria in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers last year. And despite the ban, he remains confident Kenya will progress through the group stages of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

“It’s unfortunate I will not be in the dugout in the two crucial matches.

It is not my liking but Caf ’s. It was unfortunate such things happened. I was trying to talk to the match official after a series of poor decisions,” said the coach and denied claims he spat at the match officials.

“I will be working with the boys before the match set for next week. On match day, James Nandwa (assistant coach) will take responsibility and guide the team,” he said.

The national team which reported to camp on Tuesday is expected to fly out to Maseru mid next week Lesotho for the crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers match set on July 19. The return leg will be held at Afraha Stadium, Nakuru, on August 2.

Chris Froome out of the Tour de France Defending champion Chris Froome has pulled out of the Tour de France after crashing twice on stage five.

The Briton had resumed riding after his first fall in wet conditions, but withdrew after his second crash with around 66km of the stage to go.

The 29-year-old climbed into a Team Sky support car to leave the race.

Froome tweeted: “Devastated to have to withdraw. Injured wrist and tough conditions made controlling my bike near to impossible.”

“I’m going to fly home tonight and

over the next few days I’ll go for some more scans on my wrist to find out exactly what injuries I’ve sustained.”

The stage had yet to reach the first of several cobbled sections that team-mate Geraint Thomas had predicted would cause problems for the riders. Froome had started the stage in seventh position, two seconds behind race leader Vincenzo Nibali.

He was cleared to resume racing following an X-ray after grazing his left hip and damaging a wrist when falling during the fourth stage on Tuesday.

Farah ruled out of Glasgow Diamond League showdown out IN PAIN: World champion Mo Farah has pulled out of this weekend’s Diamond League meeting in Glasgow because of stomach illness.

Double Olympic and world champion Mo Farah has pulled out of this weekend’s Diamond League event in Glasgow because of illness.

The 31-year-old was admitted to hospital in the USA with abdominal pains last week.

Farah, who was due to race over two miles at Hampden

Park, is having further tests in the UK this week.

However, he remains confident of being fit enough to compete at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games later this month.

“Sorry to everyone in Scotland but I won’t be able to make it there this week,” Farah said in a statement.

“I hope to resume training in the next few days and aim to run in the London Anniversary Games on 20 July and then the Commonwealth Games the following week.”

Farah confirmed in June he would compete for England in both the 5,000m and 10,000m at Glasgow 2014.

Vlaar heartbroken after semis defeat Netherlands defender Ron Vlaar has expressed his heartbreak after his side was eliminated from the World Cup on Wednesday.

Louis Van Gaal’s side began the tournament with a stunning 5-1 thrashing of reigning world champions Spain but fell 4-2 on penalties to Argentina after playing out a goalless draw in Sao Paulo.

Vlaar, who took the first penalty in the shootout only to see it saved by Sergio Romero, says his personal performance over the preceding 120 minutes will offer him consolation.

“I know I had a good game, but in the end you stand here with your hands empty,” he said.

“It hurts so much. Our dream has burst. I’ve done so much to get here.”

Wesley Sneijder, whose was also saved by Romero, echoed Vlaar’s grief.

“I don’t really know what to say right now. This hurts, especially when you’re one of the people to miss,” he lamented.

Netherlands must now pick themselves up for the third-place playoff against hosts Brazil in Brasilia on Saturday.
