Where are jobs for the youth?

From Page 1 The fast rate at which the Kenyan population is growing against a static number of available job positions is to blame for the unemployment crisis, a national agency has said.

The National Council of Population and Development (NCPD) says the rapid growth has put heavy pressure on already strained available resources.

“The natural resources are not growing in tandem with the population and that is taking a direct toll on employment,” NCPD Public Relations Officer David Kinyua said.

To correct the anomaly, the council will focus on raising levels of family planning awareness to sensitise the public on the need for small and

manageable families.

“We are moving towards massive public education and reaching out to leaders to engage with the public about planning families,” he said.

We hope to work with the youth on ways of accessing family planning in health facilities because the young population is the future of tomorrow. We have to invest in them,” he said.

Kenya has a population of about 43 million people, 40 per cent of whom have no employment opportunities, the Kenya National Bureua of Statistics has reported.

World Bank estimates that 800,000 people join the labour market each year but only 50,000 get professional jobs.

“I graduated two years ago and I am yet to find a job and this is frustrating,” says Brian Otieno. Like Brian, many youth leave college with high hopes of getting jobs in fields of choice but end up disappointed after failing to land working opportunities. Since jobs are scarce, majority of graduates end up working in fields that are unrelated to their studies.

Lack of jobs has been blamed for the rise in crime and insecurity levels in Kenya. Youth engage in crime because they are idle and lack something constructive to do.

But unregulated population growth alone is not to blame for job insecurity. Employers are complaining that

graduates lack basic skills for the available opportunities. Employers have been asking universities to shift from knowledge-based learning to a more hands-on approach so as to equip students with requisite skills needed in particular fields.

Although the Government has attempted to create job opportunities for the youth by setting up funds for the financing of small-scale ventures, the results have not been impressive. The Youth Enterprise Fund started in 2006 was meant to be a job creation avenue for youth with an initial investment of $57 million. The programme did not take off as expected due to theft of funds and political meddling.

In 2009, Kazi Kwa Vijana, a

World Bank funded initiative, was launched with the same purpose as the Youth Enterprise Fund but collapsed in 2011 due to theft of funds.

President Uhuru Kenyatta recently launched the Uwezo Fund which as a job creation tool for the youth. Although Government has announced that 30 per cent of all Government contracts be given to the youth, mismanagement means only a handful of the contracts have been won by the youth.

Jane Kahumbu, a citizen, says poor planning is the cause of lack of jobs.

“The Government never plans ahead. It always waits for things to escalate before they can take action,” says Kahumbu.

Some of those renovations are of questionable need.

Yet after that competition ended, the stadium was closed for a gut renovation that will cost more than half a billion dollars. Organizers decided to preserve its historic façade, but the interior is a giant construction zone.

preparations for the World Cup, the $7 billion price tag for the 2018 tournament’s stadium is already 50 percent higher than Brazil’s much criticized budget and 3.5 times higher than what Germany paid when it hosted in 2006.

“Rather than building a ‘new Russia,’ as proponents claim, the mega-event magnifies the problems of the old Russia,” Muller wrote in his comprehensive study, pointing to creeping costs,

diversion of resources from other civilian projects, and unnecessary expenses.

Russia’s economy is stalling and massive state spending on the World Cup is likely to strain the country’s budget.

What’s worse, Russia’s sports minister recently warned that some of the projects are already falling behind schedule, despite oversight

by FIFA, soccer’s main governing body, which organizes the World Cup.

Uhuru assures women of State support

World’s rarest antelope fighting to survive

President Uhuru Kenyatta has assured women of the government’s support to empower them to play an even bigger role in governance.

Speaking when he hosted the Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation officials at State House on Sunday, Uhuru said he is keen on ensuring women are involved in wealth creation. He asked the organization to help women understand the procurement processes in order to take advantage of the 30 per cent share of government tenders set aside for youths, women and persons with disability.

The hirola, popularly known as the ‘hunter’s hartebeest’, is the only surviving member of the mammalian species, Beatragus, which can be found in a small area at the Kenya-Somalia border.

The hirola’s extinction would mean the end of an entire mammalian species in Africa. The species is ranked 43rd on the list of the world’s top 100 endangered mammals, according to the Zoological Society of London. It is also one of the most threatened and least known antelopes in the world.

Wildlife conservationists have raised concerns after it emerged that the worth of ivory and rhino horns have drastically increased.

They say this portends a bad future because the demand may go up hence fuel poaching.

The conservationists have lately been appeal-

ing for market countries like China to reduce the demand for such products and the news of increased prices means that demand could escalate and result in heightened poaching activities.

A study commissioned by Save the Elephants and carried out by ivory re-

searchers Lucy Vigne and Esmond Martin found out that the prices have tripled. The average price for a kilogram of elephant tusk is now Sh178, 500 compared to Sh63, 750 in 2010, according to the researchers.

“This has caused a huge demand against a limited

supply responsible for the wave of elephant killings in Africa,” they said.

The agency’s founder Douglas Hamilton called for concerted efforts to bring down the trend which he warned could result in increased poaching activities.

Sacked KQ staff to get Sh800m Some 447 workers of Kenya Airways who were retrenched two years ago will now be paid six month’s salary for damages.

This is after the Court of Appeal ruled that the management of the airline used an opaque procedure to identify those to be sacked.

The judges further ordered that the workers be paid an additional three month’s salary in lieu of notice.

Appeal court Judges David Maraga, Erastus Githinji and Ann Murgor set aside an earlier ruling by the Industrial court which ordered the airline to reinstate the 447 workers.

KQ in September 2012 retrenched a total of 578 workers in what it explained was a move to cut its wage bill.

But the workers went to court where the company was ordered to reinstate the 447.

KQ subsequently appealed that ruling and the judges concurred.

The Appeal bench faulted industrial court judge James Rika for stopping KQ from retrenching the workers arguing that it was an error. “Court being unanimous that this appeal is allowed, order of reinstatement with back pay is hereby set aside,” the bench ruled. However, KQ is expected to now pay the workers over Sh800 million in damages as awarded by the court.

The firm says that through retrenching, it will be able to cut down on its expenditure which is mainly dominated by salaries and allowances.

NGO rejects plan to evict slum dwellers

A global campaigner for human rights has opposed plans to evict residents of Deep Sea slums in Nairobi’s Westlands area to pave way for the construction of a road.

Amnesty International wants the more than 3,000 area residents given alternative settlement before they are evicted.

The Government through the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) in conjunction with the County government on Nairobi are set to build a link road between Waiyaki Way and Limuru Road through Parklands in a bid to decongest the city.

But the development means bringing down several shanties that accommodate hundreds of Deep Sea slum families which are said to be lying on the road reserve.

Although the two governments have promised not to evict any residents, the dwellers are already leaving in fear of having the shanties levelled by bulldozers.

“The government has publicly said they will not be involved in any forceful evictions but we have time and again seen that practice,” Amnesty International Secretary General Salil Shetty

“All the slaughterhouse facilities are manned by certified, trained and qualified meat inspectors who are vetted by the Nairobi City County veterinary department,” she said. “The export slaughter houses are supervised by qualified county veterinary officers who are under the department of veterinary

services.” She said meat from other counties must be re-inspected before it is approved for consumption.

This comes after Nairobi County Assembly Committee on Agriculture and Environment gave a report that indicated that meat form abattoirs are un-inspected and compromised. This implied that consumers of un-inspected meat are at high risk of contracting salmonella, a bacterium that mainly occurs in intestines due to food poisoning whose symptoms includes diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps.

Benson Amutavi, the chair of the committee that gave the initial damning report, said the slaughterhouses are in deplorable condition and need to be upgraded.

The report said abattoirs located in densely populated areas makes it hard for upholding safety standards.

It also raised concerns over the legislation governing the management of abattoirs, which it says are not in line with the new constitution.

The Food, Drug and Chemical Substances Acts states that food handlers must be subjected to frequent health check-ups to prevent spread of diseases.

The law requires that meat for consumption should be inspected, handled and stored hygienically. The committee called for the Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos and Kiambu counties to jointly formulate policies on how to control the movement of animals across borders to foster regulation of the sector.

Game crusader rejects by-pass plan for Nairobi National Park The Cabinet’s approval of the construction of the Southern By-pass to run through the Nairobi National Park has been opposed.

The Cabinet last week approved the hiving off of 38 hectares of the park for use in the construction, saying it will compensate the land.

But wildlife conservationist Paula Kahumbu has vowed “to use all possible means” to block the construction until an assessment is done on the impact the road will have on wildlife.

“We will lobby MPs to ensure all stakeholders agree on it,” Dr Kahumbu said.

Construction of the 28-kilometre dual carriageway has been stalled after environmentalists opposed its construction arguing that it will encroach the ecosystem of the wildlife.

Although a large section of the road has been constructed, work on the path that passes through the park is yet to begin.

The Cabinet had said the road will ease congestion in the City Centre by re-routing heavy commercial and other vehicles proceeding to Rift Valley and East African Countries.

Kenya and Chinese officials in May announced that the construction of the Sh17 billion Southern bypass is on schedule.

Palestinians flee Gaza as Israel steps up raids Palestinians are fleeing Gaza after Israeli troops dropped leaflets on Sunday warning residents to vacate in order to avoid military strikes.

Israel has carried out air strikes in the town for seven days now with at least 172 Palestinians killed in what Israel says is its campaign to stop rocket attacks.

The dead are said to include 18 members of one family who died in an Israeli missile strike on Saturday

evening. More than 70 per cent of those killed are civilians of which 30 per cent were children, according to statistics from the Gaza Health ministry early today.

Some 1, 250 people have been injured.

But Israel says it is not targeting the civilians and urged them to seek shelter elsewhere. They say they are targeting Hamas militants and “terror sites”, including the homes of senior operatives. “We do not wish to harm

civilians in Gaza, but these civilians must know that remaining in close proximity to Hamas terrorists and infrastructures is extremely unsafe,” the military confirmed when it dropped the leaflets over the city of Beit Lahiya on Sunday.

There has been no single Israeli deaths reported six days into the conflict from a Hamas rocket.

And Israelis support for the campaign grows with 90 percent of them

supporting the air campaign. Israel’s tanks stand ready to invade Gaza but there is no widespread support for a ground offensive. “We’re sorry for any accidental civilian deaths but it’s the Hamas that bears complete responsibility for such civilian casualties,” Israel Prime Minister Banjamin Netanyahu said.

The UN says 17,000 people have sought refuge in its facilities.

Urine tests can show signs of premature births: Study Testing for the presence of specific molecules present in the urine of pregnant women in early pregnancy can show if a baby will be born prematurely or the fetus will suffer poor growth, a new research says.

The study published in the open access journal BMC Medicine says this could potentially help reduce complications and manage any difficulties during pregnancy.

It, however, recommended more work to the findings before they can be translated to clinical settings.

Researchers from Imperial College London and the University of Crete analyzed the metabolites -- small molecules excreted in urine -- of 438 pregnant women in the Rhea cohort.

They found that elevated urinary levels of the amino acid lysine were associated with spontaneous premature birth.

In contrast, increased levels of a N-acetylated glycoprotein -- a molecule consisting of a carbohydrate and a protein -- tended to be found in women who had to be induced early. Low levels of a third group of molecules: acetate, formate, tyrosine and trimethylamine were linked to with poor fetal growth. Women with low levels of these urine metabolites showed signs of ncreased risk of diabetes,.

“While we know that metabolism in the mother changes a lot during pregnancy to help supply the growing fetus with nutrients, we’re surprised to see so early in pregnancy a link between metabolites that we could easily detect in a urine sample and low birthweight.

Regulator probes maize flour brand quality questions Soko maize flour, the most popular flour brand in Kenya, is under investigation by the National Biosafety Authority (NBA) over allegations that it contains the genetically modified (GM) content.

However, no conclusive evidence has given proof that GM foods are harmful to consumers.

Last year, Michael White, a

biologist at the Department of Genetics at the Washington University School of Medicine said, with support from World Health Organisation, that GM foods “are not likely, nor have they been shown, to present risks for human health.”

Meanwhile, NBA has written to Director of Criminal Investigations Department Director, Mr Francis Muhoro,

asking him to investigate Capwel Industries, the makers of Soko maize flour.

“We have tested Soko maize meal flour and found it to be positive for GMO,” NBA CEO Philip Tonui said in a letter to Muhoro.

The law states that all goods containing GM ingredients must be approved by NBA. Only products with undetect-

able or less than one per cent GM content are exempted from the labels.

In 2013, Soko maize meal was ranked as the leading brand in maize flour category in a survey of retail goods by Consumer Insight.

It enjoyed 24 per cent of support from consumers (close to 4 million Kenyans with a source of income).

Kenyans spend about Sh408 on clothing every month. The amount can either buy four vests, eight pairs of socks, two of women’s shoes or two sets of bootleg glasses on the streets. Djesika Amendah, a researcher for the Public Library of Science, says Kenyans may be spending up to 4 per cent of their income on clothes every month.

A similar study by UK finance company, Standard Chartered PLC and UK-based global research consultancy, Globescan, says trendy clothes are a priority for many Kenyans of between 16 and 35 years. Those in the 16-24 age bracket usually get cash from parents and guardians as the rest are either self or formally-employed.

Cardinal George Pell, former head of the Catholic Church in Australia, will lead the department of economic affairs.

The cardinal said their goal is to make the bank an example of good management, not scandals.

The bank profits fell from high of Sh10.4 billion in 2012 to Sh346 million in 2013.

The administrative headquarters of the church had a financial shortfall of Sh2.89 billion.

The crisis has been attributed to reductions in investment before the bank’s reform project.

But former bank president Ernst von Freyberg says the bank’s woes are exaggerated.

Meanwhile, it is expected that revenues will be lower due to the desertion, but if the changes are kept consistent, the bank is likely to make profits.

More transparency will ensure proper accountability in the church expenditure which has in the past only been known to the top brass.

As personal wealth increases over the next five years, the Standard Chartered report says more middle class Kenyans will buy clothes before making solid investment decisions. Industrialisation Cabinet Secretary, Adan Mohammed, has appointed an eight-member committee to revive Kenya’s leather sector. Ndungu, like many others in the area, has invested in free range chickens, which fetch higher prices than their broiler counterparts.

Broilers sell for around Sh400 compared to freerande chicken, which cost between Sh600 and Sh800.

Smart bag to ease lost luggage stress

AT&T, a global telecommunications network company, is working to complete an ‘intelligent’ bag that can be tracked by a smart phone.

Bag2Go, is fitted with GPS tracking chips that can ‘tell’ the owner where it is or contact the airline once they get lost.

The bag can weigh itself to meet the airline weight requirement besides meeting aviation regulations.

The company aims at linking airlines IT system with the bag and the owner through the smartphone for the luggage to be delivered to the owner once it’s recovered.

The technology has been on trail since May will make it possible for luggage to ‘tell’ the own where it is so it can be retrieved.

Luggage is mostly lost on connecting flights when passengers embark and disembark.

Switching flights and taking long to collect them from dropping point may result in loss of valuables.

Travel agents estimated that about 2.5 million pieces of luggage are lost yearly in British

airports.

Going through Consumer Affairs site gives one a glimpse of frustrated Kenyan who have lost their items and have filed

to recover them even after contacting the airlines responsible.

But the company on its customer care site insists that help is readily available to those with

It is deep and intuitive understanding of each other; non-verbal communication; mystical, transcending all reasons; a knowing in the guts that the two are meant to be together on this round of rebirth. It is a knowing that the understanding between the two will grow until the two minds become totally transparent;

no fears, no secrets and complete trust; no games or role playing. This makes the demands and levels of sacrifice and help operate on different platforms. But should they cross each other, dealing with them will be different, even in the case of ‘Come we Stay’ or ‘Friends with Benefit’. The one you kiss and spend a night with wearing no cloth due to trust is miles apart from one you hug and laugh with.

Hellena Kitheka-Kaloki is the name behind the song ‘Mambo Yanabadilika’, a 2012 hit most households never missed.

Because a blessing never walks alone and beyond adding more flavour to Helen’s life, the song won the 2013 Groove award for the best album.

But, as great inspiring stories would have it, Hellena Ken, the gospel artist we know and

cherish today, was the opposite of Hellena Kitheka who went to Mulango Girls High School. One whose dream was at the verge of collapsing and getting shattered forever.

As a 12th kid in a family of 13, Helena knew her dad as one who would not support her to get education although he had

resources to.

But this was not the only handicap she had to cross over.

Things graduated from bad to worse when her parents separated while she was in form two.

To deepen her wounds, her eldest brother who was paying her fees for secondary education passed on, living her distraught, discouraged

and devastated. “I would buy bananas, keep them till they ripe and sell them to other girls in school to raise pocket money,” she recently said in a TV interview. She was 16 years old with nothing definite to look forward to except her participation in co-curricular activities such as music, drama and ball games at Mulango Girls High School.

Kemboi prepares best win for last race

Two-time Olympics and world 3,000m steeple chase champion Ezekiel Kemboi is eyeing his last win at the Commonwealth Games later this month.

Kemboi is confident he will grab his fourth medal in Glasgow. Regarded as the best steeplechaser of all time says, Kemboi wants to claim the gold medal that eluded him in Delhi four years ago.

“My desire is to end on the high. Having been to the games before I know what to do to win,” said the athlete who was named team Kenya captain.

“This will be my fourth Commonwealth Games. This will be my last participation in the event so I’m urging upcoming athletes who are running in the race to continue with the winning trend once I hand over to them since we picked well from our mentors like Ben Jipchoo,” Kemboi said.

forward Oscar Ouma has also been recalled to replace injured French based winger Willy Ambaka.

Scolari and staff sacked Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and his entire coaching staff have been sacked by the Brazilian Football Confederation after a disastrous World Cup campaign which saw the hosts humiliated against eventual winners Germany and Netherlands.

Scolari’s side were ripped apart in the 7-1 semi-final defeat before losing 3-0 n in the third-place play-off against Netherlands on Saturday.

And the boss, who was at the helm for Brazil’s 2002 World Cup triumph, looks to have, unsurprisingly, paid the ultimate price.

This comes after wide spread call by former players to have the entire team disbanded following the historic defeats. The South Americans were one of the favourites to win the tournament on home soil but their bid for a sixth title came to an abrupt halt last Tuesday when they were demolished 7-1 by Germany in the semi-finals.

Former player Zico feels Scolari should have left his position and has suggested Sao Paulo coach Muricy Ramalho as his replacement.

“We should thank Scolari and thank [assistant coach Carlos Alberto] Parreira too. But we need to choose new people with new thoughts about how to play the Brazilian way,” The former Brazil said.

“Ramalho is one the greatest champions of the Brazilian league, which is one of the hardest in the world to win.”

Zico then went on to discuss the strength of Brazil and stressed that their failure to win the World Cup is the result of a lack of quality.

The 30 year-old forward has told Dutch television station NOS Van Gaal had offered him a role in a refurbished United squad next season but declined it.

“I have a special bond with him,” Robben said of the veteran coach. “He is the most important coach in my career. After the match he did ask me to come to Manchester.”

Details of the offer were not clear, but he has ruled out the option of joining United.

“It is not an option. I will

stay at Bayern Munich.”

Robben, who scored three goals in the World Cup, was in superb form in Brazil and is on the short list for the “Golden Ball” award presented to the tournament’s best player.
