The HIV/Aids menace that has ravaged sub-Sahara Africa, killing humans and leaving millions of others orphaned, may come to an end by 2030. The hope has been given by the United Nations Aids agency which says in its latest report that there are chances the pandemic may be brought under control by the year 2030. The number of new HIV infections and deaths from Aids are falling but there is still urgent
need for more international efforts to control the virus, warning that the “current pace cannot end the epidemic”. Although the report indicated that 35 million people around the world are living with the virus, there were just 2.1 million new cases in 2013, representing a 38 per cent drop from the 3.4 million figure reported in 2001. Aids-related deaths have fallen by a fifth in the past three years, standing at 1.5 million a year.
