Medics warn over poison hawked as bottled water Doctors have raised concern over the safety of bottled water sold by vendors in the streets of Nairobi, saying the liquid may be dangerous for
consumers. They say the source of the water is suspicious as many of the vendors fill bottles from unprotected sources
such as taps and rivers. The unscrupulous vendors are also said to be faking the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) brand stickers to cer-
tify that their cocktails may be safe for consumption. Even bottle caps seal that many customers rely on as a certification that the water
has been opened before a customer secures the product, are often faked.

The poison in bottled water TUESday, JULY 22, 2014
From Page 1 “It is easy business,” says Patricia Oriaso, a bottled water hawker around the CBD. “All you need is find a couple of bottles and a source of water and you have a business. It is that simple. “I get my bottles from a dumpsite.. any..even in Ruai or the dustbins around town. I wash and then fill them with water from a tap and sell for Sh20. It is that easy. At the end of the day, I can make more than Sh200 from the water.”
The bottles are also secured from plastic collectors who sell them for as low as Sh5. They are refilled from taps but if water is scarce, they refill from rivers or other sources. “If you cannot find water, you have to make the best of what is available like river water. For example water in River Mbagathi is clear enough to pass of as tap water,” says Kanini. “If you can afford it, you can put it in a purifier but you can also sell it like that… there is no difference in taste.”
Rain is also another source. The dealers collect water from gutters and drainage pipes of most buildings around CBD. Dr Paul Murithi Muhoro of Mathare Hospital says the health risks involved in drinking such water is high. “One can contract typhoid, cholera, have uncontrollable vomiting and stomach cramps,” says Dr Muhoro. “If you drink water that is from an unprotected source, like a river, it has most likely been used for
all sorts of activities like washing clothes, people or animals may have also excreted there and all the waste will be passed down to you.” Dr Muhoro also warns that re-use of water bottles is a health risk. “Persons that used the bottle before may have contracted a disease like herpes. There is no guarantee that those water bottle are properly washed so contracting such a disease is very likely.” But it is not only bottled water that is a source of health risks in CBD;
plastic bags have also caused concern especially in market places. Plastic bags are also collected in dumpsites washed, hang to dry in the sun then sold. They are often bought by mama mbogas in market places and in Gikomba where customer numbers are high. “We sell plastic bags for as low as Sh2 to mama mbogas. The big one goes for Sh10,” says Fredrick Olinda, a plastic hawker. “This is quite cheap compared to how much they buy them for.”
Criminals hack into Kenya Army Twitter account again The Twitter account for the Kenya Army has been hacked for the second time, hours after it was restored late Monday. Barely two hours after Twitter intervened and restored the account, the Anonymous Group of hackers claimed fresh control.
Also affected again was the Twitter account for KDF’s Liaison Officer Major Emmanuel Chirchir. The group also claimed to have hacked a number of government department websites but a number of those claimed were operating as usual.
The hackers have continued to post insults and offensive material on the account that was used by the military to update the public on the progress in Somalia where Kenya Army soldiers are fighting Al Shabaab militants. By Tuesday morning, police
had not identified the individual or individuals involved in the criminal activity. The hacker’s account @ Anon_0x03 was still operational with tweets shifting from retweets of stories done on KDF Twitter account hacking back to
pro-Palestine tweets on Gaza. On Monday, KDF Spokesman Bogita Ongeri said in addition to trying to regain control of the accounts, they were working with police to have the hackers arrested.

seems to be a botched robbery,” said Kitur. Area residents protested over increasing rate of insecurity. The shooting comes a day after hooded gunmen killed four people and injured 11 others in Likoni area. Police say they do not know

Most nurse graduates leave Kenya About 50 per cent of Kenyan nurses who graduate from various Kenya Medical Training Colleges (KMTC) leave the country for greener pastures abroad. KMTC chairman Philip Kaloki says the exodus is the reason behind the shortage of nurses in local hospital. He said the country is now in need of about 50, 000 paramedics to improve healthcare services across the country. Speaking at Voi Distircit Hospital, Prof Kaloki said they are exploring new ways to increase number of trained health personnel.
Local universities to be ranked based on fields The Commission on University Education (CUE) will release a ranking of all local universities by the end of this year. said the ranking Speaking in Nairobi yesterday
during the launch of the CUE five-year strategic plan, chief executive officer, Prof David Some, said the commission will release a multidimensional ranking of the universities to help students
make informed choices on where to study. “The ranking will be a good reference point for anyone who wants to know which university is the best in a certain field,” Prof Some said.
There are 22 public universities across Kenya with another 17 private ones and all are expected to feature in the rankings. Prof Some said the ranking will stir up positive
competition among the universities. The University of Nairobi has remained Kenya’s top most institution of higher learning according to Spanish Cybermetrics firm which ranks universities.
Kenyans more likely to be shot by cops than by thugs Kenyans are five times more likely to be shot dead by police than by armed robbers, according to a new report. The report by the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU), says police firearms account for close to 70 per cent of the 1,868 people shot dead in Kenya in the last five years. The next deadliest perpetrators, armed robbers, were responsible for only 14 per cent of the deaths. IMLU says of the 1,868 Kenyans who died from gunshot wounds between 2009 and 2013, 1,252 were killed by police. This is 67 per cent of the total deaths from shootings recorded by the unit. As part of an inter-
departmental initiative to improve security in the country, the UK has been working with Kenyan officers. In line with the project, senior British police officers have been dispatched to work with their Kenyan counterparts, giving professional and technical advice. British money has funded Kenya’s Anti-Terror Police Unit, and bought vehicles and radios for border patrols. However, the spokesman said that no funding has gone towards firearms training. With regard to the study, Zipporah Mboroki, spokesperson for the Kenya Police Service said, “If there is any misuse of any fire arm, that officer will go to court.”

The Nairobi County government plans to acquire land next to schools for expansion of the learning institutions, county executive for education Christopher Khaemba has said. Khaemba said land owners near overcrowded primary schools will be bought off to create space for the construction of additional schools as the county government seeks to establish more schools to decongest the existing ones. “We will definitely be taking up certain buildings and compensating the owners to create space for more schools,” Khaemba said. He said the displacement is inevitable if the county government has to implement the recommendations of a report by a taskforce on how to improve the county. the education standards. Governors’ lobby wants police hiring repeated Governors have joined the fray of those calling for a repeat of the police recruitment exercise that was conducted last week. Pressure has been piling on the Police Service Commission to repeat the countrywide process after claims that it was marred by corruption and other malpractices. Governors are the latest group to call for a repeat exercise after the Ethics and AntiCorruption Commission backed the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, Consumer Federation of Kenya and Haki Africa which also made similar claims of corruption. Council of Governors chairman Isaac
Ruto has asked the National Police Service Commission to revoke the list of recruits and order for a repeat of the exercise, claiming the drive was riddled with corruption. “There is a lady who was disqualified for being pregnant yet even tests revealed she was not. That is despite the lady having passed all the others tests,” Ruto, who is also the Bomet governor claimed on Tuesday. He spoke during a funds drive at Tegat Catholic church in Bomet. Siaya governor said he has written to the commission after his office received numerous claims of malpractices. Although NPSC

Google to enhance page loading speed Google has unveiled a plan to make your web pages load faster. The web search engine says it has realised that giant photos are slowing down the web and has developed a new image format that will shrink size of web photos and graphic files by about 35 per cent. Images are responsible for nearly two thirds of the size of an average website. The figure grew by more than 30 per cent last year, says HTTP Archive. The old, familiar image formats are the culprits. Next to Flash animations and videos, JPEGs are generally the largest files on Web pages. GIF and PNG files are also big. To boost load times for websites, Google (GOOGL, Tech30) developed a new image format, called WebP.

Boko Haram capture Nigerian city, kill 66 Boko Haram thugs raided a Nigerian town and took it hostage for four days during which they killed dozens and displaced more than 15, 00 residents, Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency says. Scores of fighters armed with rocket-propelled grenades, explosives and guns descended
on the town of Damboa early Thursday evening, residents and officials said. By the time the raid ended on Sunday, 66 residents had been killed and more than 15,000 had fled, NEMA spokesman Abdulkadir Ibrahim said. “We lost 46 people on Thursday through Friday in Damboa and the gunmen
pursued people who fled to nearby Fori and Kwairi villages where they killed 20 more,” Sheriff Muhammad, a spokesman for the Damboa local authority, said. The Islamic militant group’s trademark black flag was hoisted afterward, signifying that the town was under their control.
“Boko Haram have taken over Damboa where they erected their flags after the attack that forced all residents to flee,” said Sheriff Mohammed. Nigerian military tried to assure residents that it would retake the town. “We are not conceding any portion of this country to any terrorist group,” said Maj. Gen.
Chris Olukolade, a Defense Ministry spokesman. “We are going to reverse every form of insecurity in that area very soon.” Boko Haram launched an offensive against Damboa’s military base and police station on July 4 during which they killed six soldiers and five policeman.

Captain African American
Marvel Comics has announced a new Captain America — and for the first time in the comic franchise’s history, the superhero has been cast as a black man. Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada announced on The Colbert Report that Sam Wilson, also known as The Falcon, will take over Captain America’s shield in Captain America #21, the New York Post reports.
The star-spangled superhero had suffered a brutal defeat at the hands of the newly minted villain Iron Nail and lost his special powers that gave him super-strength and youth last month. The change for the Cap will only affect the comic book universe at this time. Chris Evans, who has played the Captain on the big screen in The Avengers, will continue to portray the hero. Captain America writer Rick
Remender told Marvel.com: “I think that different characters across the Marvel Universe are going to respond to Sam’s appointment in different ways. But he’s not a novice — in his long history as the Falcon, he’s earned a reputation for integrity and honesty and backbone that most of the super hero community have a respect for.” The mantle of Captain America has been passed
on to other characters in the past, including John Walker (later known as US Agent) and sidekick Bucky Barnes (recently seen in Captain America 2 as “The Winter Soldier”). The move comes just one day after the same comic franchise announced that the character Thor, the God of Thunder, would now be portrayed as a woman in that comic book series.
Study links heart disease to sexual assault at youth stage Young girls who are subjected to sexual abuse are at higher risk of developing atherosclerosis later in life, a new study says. Atherosclerosis is a heart disease where fatty materials are deposited on the inner walls of the arteries of the heart. The deposits lead to narrowing of the arteries, a condition also known as carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT). In a study published in the American Heart Association journal, Stroke, 1,400 Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic, and Chinese women between the ages of 42 and 52 were scrutinised. Researchers found women who had been sexually abused in their childhood had higher carotid artery IMT at midlife than those who were not. The study was able to link sexual abuse to the cardiovascular condition and not physical abuse. The women were interrogated on childhood and adult physical and sexual abuse against well-known heart disease risk factors. It was revealed that 16 per cent of the women reported a history of childhood sexual abuse, with African-American women recording a 20 per cent occurrence. Lead author of the study Prof Rebecca Thurston said there is need for increased awareness of the effects of sexual molestation to the children in their later life. Women drawn from Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Newark, Pittsburgh and Oakland were under the study, which started in 1996 at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.

State to merge loans into bank TUESday, JULY 22, 2014
Workers in the informal (Jua Kali) sector, youth and the self-employed will soon access loans at lower rates once the Government merges a number of funding institutions. The Government plans to merge funds run by the Youth Enterprise Development, Women Enterprise, Uwezo and Micro and Small
Enterprises funds. The lending platforms will form the Biashara Bank which hopes to help borrowers access loans at favourable rates. “A task force is working to harmonise operations and lending rates of Biashara Bank,” Industrialisation Public Secretary
Dr Wilson Songa said last week. The Youth Enterprise Fund charges interest at the rate of 8.5 per cent per year. Songa said through Biashara Bank, small business owners, vendors, stall operators and artisans will apply for soft loans just like other groups under the Uwezo, youth and
cityplans
Some lenders, such as Safaricom’s Mshwari, have facilities that cater for the unbanked customers. Biashara Bank hopes to increase the uptake of loans by business owners which is still low. Last year, Uwezo Fund disbursed only Sh1 billion out of the Sh7 billion set aside for youth-based enterprises.

Sh4b Karen mall on track, says developer The construction of The Hub, Karen’s Sh4 billion shopping mall is under way, the developers have announced. The Hub is set to become Kenya’s second-largest shopping mall after Garden City which is under construction along Thika Road. Located 20 kilometres from the Central Business District (CBD), the mall is being constructed by Azalea Holdings, a group of investors with operations in Kenya. Philippe Cauviere, a director of the project, says consumers have developed a culture of frequenting shopping malls. The trend is especially evident in shopping centres which house social facilities, including restaurants, video game shops and movie theatres. “The development promises a vibrant and unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages and gender,” Cauviere said in a statement recently. Azalea launched the project in July 2013. The hub, which will be completed by September 2015, provides rental space. The first phase of the project will be ready in the next few months and will provide more than 30,000 square feet of rental space for eateries, shops, stores and other investors out for commercial space. Azalea’s announcement comes at a time when developers have noticed the growing popularity of retail over office space because of the growing profitability. About a year ago, rental space in Nairobi was worth Sh3,060 a square metre every month. This is almost three times more than office space which was giving developers rental income of between Sh787 and Sh1,311 per square metre every month.

pricedriver Power costs are on the rise The cost of producing electricity has gone up by slightly over 3 per cent in the last three months, a report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) says. The report attributed the increased power production costs to this year’s delayed rains which have affected hydro power production, the country’s predominant source of electricity. As a result, new tariffs were increased by 10 per cent last month to account for the deficit. Manufacturers who were consuming 15,000 kilowatts per hour (kWh) of power are now paying close to Sh400, 000, up from around Sh363, 000 a month. Households using 200 kWh of electricity are now paying Sh4, 700, up from Sh4, 300.
Huawei records increase in sales
Spirit manufacturers are now worried about the flooding of the local market with branded counterfeit alcohol. London Distillers, an alcoholic drink manufacturer with operations in Kenya, has raised concerns about one of its popular drinks being mistaken for a potentially harmful bootleg version. The firm has told the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) that spirits manufactured by a Tanzanian company are being smuggled in large quantities into Kenya. “The same spirit is being used to manufacture counterfeit products of our brands mostly Meakins Vodka and Kenya King in 250ml bottles,” said London Distillers in a letter to KRA. Soni Mann, the company’s General Manager said in a recent statement, “We are in communication with the KeBS to carry out fresh tests on our brand, Meakins Vodka, and samples collected from the field,” he said. Mann added that an investigation by the firm revealed that some of the Meakins Vodka bottles found on the street were fakes since they lacked excise stamps and did not have a date of production. He has asked KRA to work with the Tanzania Revenue Authority to rectify the situation.
Manufacturers have complained that the high power prices are pushing up their costs and lowering their competitiveness in the region, besides pushing up the cost of goods. “The increase in power bills started last year and we have always said it will lead to high cost of products. But we are viewing it as a temporary problem since the country is now shifting away from thermal power, which is very unreliable due to unpredictable weather patterns,” said Betty Maina, the Kenya Association of Manufacturers CEO. Energy Regulatory Commission MD, Fred Nyang’ says the new tariffs will remain in force for one year before they are revised, depending on the conditions.
Hauwei has reported a 19 per cent jump in sales has been reported by Huawei. The Chinese telecom equipment maker’s sales increased to 135.8 billion Yuan (Sh1.9 trillion) for the first six months of the year and is said to be expecting an operating profit margin of 18.3
Local palm oil farmers falling short of exploiting crop’s export potential Palm oil plant farmers in Kenya are falling way short of meeting country export potential, experts say. The Hamburg-based Oil World Trade Journal says palm oil and palm kernel oil makes up close to 60 per cent of the total 60.3 million-
tonne global oils and fats export trade. Malaysia, with 45 per cent of the market share, dominates the palm oil trade. Meanwhile, Kenya’s imports palm oil at a cost of around $140 million (Sh12.3 billion) a year, making edible oil the country’s second
most important import after petroleum. Since 1993 a new hybrid variety of cold-tolerant, highyielding oil palm has been promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in western Kenya.

Cathy Meng, the firm’s chief financial officer, said “the firm has achieved quality and sustainable growth in our consumer business thanks to the increase of brand awareness and smart devices sales worldwide. “Our flagship smartphone, the Ascend P7, is being sold
in more than 70 countries and regions and we are confident that in 2014 we will achieve sustainable growth, robust operations, and healthy financials.” She said. Before, the Chinese firm concentrated on making telecoms network equipment but diversified into smartphone
The climate there may even be better than that of Malaysia, the world’s largest producer of palm oil, says Peter Griffee, FAO Senior Officer for Industrial Crops. “It usually rains in the evening and is sunny during the day,” says Griffee. “So while the rainfall is similar to that of Malaysia, there are longer hours of sunshine, which is essential for oil development.” The palm oil plant is one of the largest of the palm species and produces more oil per hectare than any other oil crop. Griffee says fruit can be harvested from three-year-old palms. Mature palms yield about 4 tonnes of oil per hectare a year.

8 5 Kamba father’s rebuke was ‘yes’ for daughter to join ‘Wathi’ fete
AKAMBA CULTURAL DANCE: Those who did better than the rest were said to have charmed competitors to reduce the opponents’ vigour in the dance.
A father’s rebuke to the Kamba Wathi ceremony singers was a ‘yes’ for her daughter to join the rest in the nightlong performance. Veronica Ndereba, 66, says the father reprimanded young men who came for her daughter telling them to go away and let him sleep. He knew if she goes she is likely to meet her future husband. “Go away. I want to sleep. I don’t want
your noise. Hearing the voice of the father, the girl could go out and join the youngsters” Ndereba says. If the father kept quiet, it meant he disapproved the girl’s going out. She could not dare go out despite persistence of the singing with patience of the youths. The young woman who comes out joins the rest in matching to kinyaka, which was an almost central dancing arena
in two or more villages. Drums burst the deafness of the dead night as each village group danced to outdo the other from the other village. At some point, Ndereba says poor performance was linked to charms. “Those who did better than the rest were said to have charmed competitors to reduce the opponents’ vigour in the dance, although I don’t know if it was true,” she says.
The social meeting was planned by elderly men and women. It took place in months of dry spell or when there was no planting, weeding or harvesting. Wathi was an interaction that gave the youth a chance to spot and interact with those they feel were potential life partners. Nicknames were given during the ceremony. Men kept theirs but often women dropped them at a later date.

and other ingredients such as potatoes. Other ingredients that can be added to the meal for a variation in taste include, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, coriander, crushed garlic (optional), cooking oil, meat, lemon juice, salt and spices. The bananas are peeled, sliced into round slices and soaked in cold water, this is to soften them and prevent browning. The tomatoes, onions and potatoes are also chopped.
Sauté the onions in a sufuria using minimal cooking oil, add the meat and cook until slightly tender then add the potatoes. Drain the bananas and add to sufuria then add the tomatoes and garlic, mix well and add little water. Bring it to boil then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes or until bananas are tender and sauce has thickened.

Codfish sperm is the East’s answer to caviar Westerners have caviar while their counterparts in the East have cod milt. Caviar is a very expensive dish compared to cod milt and people go to great lengths to get it. Cod milt is a winter season delicacy in Japan, where it is referred to as Shirako. It is sperm or the sperm sac from different kinds of fish, mostly cod fish or salmon. Shirako literally translates to white
child/children in Japanese. It is mostly imported from the United States and the sperm is harvested during the winter. Shirako can be eaten raw or cooked depending on a person’s preference. Shirako looks like pig brain and has a slippery texture while raw. When gently cooked it develops a semi-hard texture that makes it easier to pick up and eat. Shirako can be steamed then
served in a ponzu, a citrusbased sauce, with toppings of chopped green onions and grated daikon radish. The texture of the steamed shirako has been described as soft, creamy and buttery on the tongue. Shirako can also be deep fried. However before it is deep fried, it has to be coated thoroughly in a mixture of flour and eggs to protect its delicate texture from
disintegrating. The outsides of the shirako become crispy with the inside remaining soft and creamy. Shirako is considered an acquired taste as not many Japanese get excited at the prospects of eating Shirako. It is believed to be an aphrodisiac and gives one stamina and good performance in bed. It is also believed to reduce impotenced in men.

Gor boss blames FKF over loss to minnows GFE 105
i’m still bitter: Gor coach Bobby Williamson is bitter over alleged blunders by Football Kenya Federation which refused to stop Saturday’s Gotv Shield match where his team was bundled out of the tournament.
Gor Mahia head coach Bobby Williamson is still bitter after what he calls blunders by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for not stopping Saturday’s Gotv Shield match where his team was bundled out. Gor were knocked by minnows GFE 105 on post-match penalties after the match ended 1-1 in regular time. Williamson said his club requested FKF to have the match moved since he was missing a number of key players.
“Having forwarded our grievances in advance, we expected changes to be made which sadly never materialised,” Williamson said. Williamson was lacking Geoffrey Kizito, Godffrey Walusimbi, who were with Uganda Cranes, while keeper Jerim Onyango and David Owino were on duty with Harambee Stars. “We managed to play Nakuru All Stars but we knew it could be a different cup competition. We hope the house will be put in order,” he said.
Kenya FA Secretary General Michael Esakwa acknowledged receiving Gor’s postponement letter but said it was too late for changes. “Gor should know that the federation in conjunction with our broadcast sponsors SuperSport have lined up the match for live TV coverage and all necessary logistics had already been finalised. Broadcast satellites already secured, we simply couldn’t make changes,” he said.

The 27-year-old 50-meters butterfly winner in Delhi India four years ago is looking forward to bouncing back from a poor show in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. “I was a little bit burnt out after London, but I have regained my confidence and desire to compete,” Dunford said from his training base in San Francisco Sunday as he prepared to fly out to Glasgow to join the rest of Team Kenya. “The break gave me a fresh perspective on my swimming and I think I have a far
more balanced and mature approach to the sport. I was also able to give my shoulders and lower back a rest. They were a constant source of pain but now I feel much healthier.” He has lined up to compete in the 50m, 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle. The swimmer says he is ready to show the world he has improved. “I feel my stroke coming together nicely as my flexibility returns. I am hitting the times I want to be hitting in training and now it’s really about fine tuning, resting up and getting my mind ready for the competition,” he says. He hopes his success can inspire a new generation of swimmers. Kenya will be represented by 13 swimmers.

We will be back, Neymar vows
Sifting through the ruins of Brazil’s World Cup campaign, star player Neymar says his team strove hard for glory, but other countries have moved ahead and they must catch up. While refusing to pin the blame on former handler Luiz Felipe Scolari, Neymar also warned young players to beware the damage some coaches could do to young players’ develop-
ment. The 22-year-old said Brazil deserved at best seven out of ten for a Cup showing which ended with a 7-1 semi-final mauling by champions Germany. Asked why Brazil failed Neymar said there were simply things that could not be explained. “We cried because it was our childhood dream (to win it) and had fought hard to get to where
we were.” He added he believed he would have chosen the same 23 players as Scolari for the roster — but insisted Brazil must realize it has fallen down the pecking order and has no automatic right to success. “I think Brazilian football is behind. It’s behind Germany and Spain. We’ve slipped behind and we have to be man enough to admit it.” The Barcelona star was forced to

star attraCtion: World and olympic 100m and 200m champion usain Bolt will be in Glasgow.
Jamaican sprint star Usain Bolt and middle-distance king Mo Farah headline a stellar track and field line-up at the Commonwealth Games which start in Glasgow tomorrow. Bolt, the 100 and 200 metres world record holder, and double Olympic and world champion, has consistently said since his victories at the Moscow worlds in 2013 that the Commonwealths were his goal, depending on coach Glen Mills’ wishes. So the Jamaican, arguably the biggest name in world sport, will be in Scotland to give the biggest boost to an event that draws competitors from 71 nations, mainly former British colonies, in 17 sports. But Bolt, a six-time Olympic gold
medallist and making his Commonwealth debut in Glasgow, will likely compete only in the 4x100m relay after missing the Jamaican national championships. “I do not wish to take the place of anyone who qualifies this weekend in an individual event, but am available for relay duty if the selectors feel I can be an asset to the Jamaican team in Glasgow,” said the 27-year-old, who has missed proposed comeback meets in Ostrava and Paris because of a foot injury. It’s not yet clear what event Bolt will compete in. Mo, the double Olympic and world 5,000 and 10,000m champion will be going for the double in Glasgow after a troubled season during which he has had abdominal problems.
Real strike Sh10.6b deal for Rodriguez Real Madrid and Monaco have agreed terms for the transfer of James Rodriguez, with an official statement expected from the European champions either Tuesday or Wednesday. Both clubs have been in talks in the past week before finally hammering an agreement on Sunday evening. Reports said Monaco will receive a fee close to Sh10.6b for the Colombia international. Only minor details are expected to be resolved to conclude the deal. Monaco are keen on Diego Lopez, though the goalkeeper insists he wants to stay at Bernabeu. Germany midfielder Sami Khedira, who has just one year remaining on his Real contract, could be used as a makeweight in the deal. Madrid would ideally like to present James at the stadium this week. That would mean President Florentino Perez and Director General Jose Angel Sanchez would have to delay a trip to Los Angeles where the first-team squad are due to land on Monday
for a pre-season tour. James, who will no longer link up with the Monaco squad for the preseason tour, would join the Real squad along with France internationals Raphael Varane and Karim Benzema on August 1. Jamesis is reported to have refused to comment on his move to Madrid when he was asked by reporters at Madrid’s Barajas airport on Sunday. The player was in the Spanish capital to take a connecting flight to Nice, France. But the news was later confirmed by agent Jorge Mendes. James will wear the No. 10 shirt which was last worn by Mesut Ozil.

Mayweather vows to knock out rival Maidana, his trainer Floyd Mayweather vowed to knock out Marcos Maidana and his trainer Robert Garcia on the same night in their highly anticipated September match. Mayweather and Garcia reopened old wounds as they rowed about the type of gloves both men will wear for their rematch on September 13. The pound-for-pound No 1 objected to the Argentine’s choice ahead of their first meeting and refused to back down late last week. At one point Garcia handed him a pink glove to sign before throwing another one at him. Addressing the crowd, Mayweather said: “I was champion when he (Garcia) was champion. “He’s long gone away from the sport and I’m (still) champion. On September 13, I’ll still be champion.
“I’m the type of fighter who can kick a fighter and his trainer’s on the same night. “He had his chance to talk and he got up here and said nothing. Garcia said: “You better be ready because this fight’s going to be rougher for you.” The 39-year-old then dared Mayweather to make a winnertakes-all bet on the fight.
Shakhtar players reject return flight to crisis-hit Ukraine city Six Shakhtar Donetsk players refused to return to the city following Saturday’s friendly in France because of concerns over the conflict in Ukraine. Donetsk is currently controlled by pro-Russian rebels, with the Ukrainian army attempting to
regain control. Alex Teixeira, Fred, Dentinho, Douglas Costa, Facundo Ferreyra and Ismaily did not fly back after the game in Lyon. Club president Rinat Akhmetov has warned that the players may face sanctions if they do not
return. “Players have contracts that they have to abide by. If they do not come, I think, they will be the first to suffer,” Akhmetov said “Hopefully, the mind and heart will prevail over misunderstanding, and the players will not follow
temptation and fear. Especially since there is nothing to fear.” Five of the six players are Brazilian, with Ferreyra hailing from Argentina, and have a reported market value of sh5.5b. Shakhtar are currently not allowed to play home matches at
their Donbass Arena, due to the conflict. The new season is scheduled to begin this weekend and the Ukrainian Football Federation has yet to decide where the club will play.

Amrouche position as Stars coach in danger as CAF bans him for one year Kenya might have seen the last of head coach Adel Amrouche (pictured) after he was suspended by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for one year for spitting on match official. He had earlier been slapped with a two match suspension pending submission of the matter to CAF disciplinary board. The board, chaired by Raymond Hack from South Africa, met last Thursday at CAF headquarters in Cairo where the decision was made to ban the Kenya coach. Amrouche was found to be in breach of Article 129 (c) of CAF’s rules which provides
for a 12 match ban to anyone spitting at a match official. “The suspension is effective from first day of notification namely July 20, 2014,” a letter confirming the suspension and copied to Football Kenya Federation (FKF) said. The letter further states that this decision will be forwarded to world football governing body Fifa which may extend the sanction internationally meaning that Amrouche cannot coach any team anywhere in the world during the suspension. “The decision can be contested before CAF appeals board. The party intending to appeal shall announce this intention in writing within three days of notification of decision.”
Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels. Louis Van Gaal is a huge fan of World Cup winner Hummels and had sounded his camp out over a possible move. Sources claim that an agreement has been made that will see Hummels arrive at Old Trafford for just Sh1.9billion United are desperate to add to their defensive ranks following the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. Van Gaal had insisted he would wait before adding to his squad, but signing a centre-half is a priority. The transfer was then announced as a done deal a week later. Chief executive Ed Woodward hinted new signings were on the horizon and said: “There is no fixed budget. Financially we are extremely strong, we have funds available. “Louis is the boss and is assessing what’s going on but we have been in dialogue for some time about targets so there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes. “We’re continuing to move forward on some of those targets, so watch this space. “The time he [Van Gaal] spends here as well [in America] he’ll be able to assess more what he’s got and continue to tweak the decisions if we need to.”
Gerrard calls time on largely mediocre England career
The Football Association has announced that Steven Gerrard has retired from England duty after 14 years of international football. Liverpool captain Gerrard made 114 appearances for England and he skippered the country at the recent 2014 World Cup. However, the Three Lions came bottom of Group D, failing to win a game, and the 34-yearold struggled for form, adding to questions over his international future. Gerrard said he needed time before making a decision, confirming that Liverpool’s involvement in next season’s Champions League, besides the domestic schedule, was a factor. On Monday, Gerrard told the FA’s official website: “This has been a very difficult decision, one of the toughest I’ve had to make in my career. I have agonised over this since coming back from Brazil and have spoken to family, friends and people close to me in the game before coming to this point. “Most importantly, Brendan [Rodgers] has been fantastic and obviously I have
to look after my body as much as possible to ensure I can give everything when I take to the field. “To ensure I can keep playing to a high level and giving everything to Liverpool Football Club I believe this is the right decision, and having Champions League football back at Anfield is another big factor in my decision.” England boss Roy Hodgson said: “While I’m disappointed in the decision, I can entirely understand Steven’s situation and can have no complaints given the incredible service he has given to his country. Gerrard made his debut in 2000 in a 2-0 win over Ukraine at Wembley and went on to play in six major tournaments, scoring 21 times over his entire career. He captained the side 38 times and is the third most-capped England player of all time behind Peter Shilton (125) and David Beckham (115).
In context, however, he was part of the highly hyped, ,but grossly underachieving team of Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney. And unless Rooney pulls off something spectacular and unexpected in France in two years, they all have something in common.
