Fund boss says youth addicted to office jobs
Preference for white collar jobs and lack of interest in business are the main reasons the youth are shying away from Government loans. Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF) Chief Executive Catherine Namuye told X News that lack of business ideas are the main reasons why the youth are reluctant to pursue Government
loans. She said the youth have also been scared by myths that loans impoverish families after defaulting on payment. “Many youth want to get office jobs and have got little interest in business. Others are still not sure which business to start while others have been told by parents that taking loans can impoverish the family,” Namuye said.

Youth addicted to office jobs FRIday, JULY 25, 2014
From Page 1 The revelations come even as the United Nations Special Envoy to the Great Lakes Region Mary Robinson disclosed on Thursday that 34 per cent of youth in the region, including the educated and highly skilled, have no jobs. She was speaking to an audience that included Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta and Yoweri Museveni at the last day of the Special Summit on the war against youth unemployment in Nairobi. President Uhuru asked policy mak-
ers to develop plans that prioritise jobs for the youth. He said past regimes have failed to understand the nature and structure of youth unemployment thus allowing it to escalate. “Those of us in decision making positions need to be creative in order to improve the lives of our young people,” he said. And Ms Namuye said YEDF has raised its presence at regional and constituency levels and had launched an aggressive awareness campaigns to get more youth into business.
“We have opened 10 regional offices and employed two officers in every constituency to increase our service touch points. We have also provided motorbikes to officers at constituency level to ease their movement,” she says. She said the presence at the grassroots will take services closer to the youth while raising awareness and mobilising young people to apply for loans as the Government steps up efforts to empower the youth. During the opening of the summit five days ago, Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Ann
Waiguru said the Government is in the process of making it a mandatory requirement for investors to demonstrate capacity to create jobs for the youth before being allowed to set shop. But the focus is not on jobs alone. Ms Namuye said her office is working to lure the youth into investing. “I would like to encourage the youth to get into business. It pays. But one must exercise patience. Good things do not come overnight,” she said. With loans ranging from Sh25, 000 to Sh400, 000 for groups while business expansion loans range from
Sh100, 000 to Sh2milion, the fund hopes to lend about Sh1 billion by the end of the current fiscal year. The fund only considers the constituency in which the business premise is located. Waiguru said the youth will be trained on how to sustain businesses to ensure the loans are repaid. About 300, 000 youth have been trained in entrepreneurship and Sh10 billion disbursed to more than 300 youth-owned enterprises. The ministry says the fund has led to the creation of one million jobs since it was launched in 2006.
Lawyer claims US teen accused of sexually abusing children was fixed The lawyer for US citizen Mathew Lane Durham, who is accused of engaging in sexual acts with children at a Kenyan home where he volunteered in April, claims mental games were used to get him to confess to the crime. Though Durham “admitted to be struggling with homosexuality and child pornography” after being confronted, lawyer Steven Jones says his client had denied the allegations. Jones claims his client was coerced into confessing in order to win back his passport. He claimed Durham was held at a house, for a while without food, and subjected to a “pseudo-psychological good cop, bad cop” routine. “A statement on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) website says Durham, 19, was arrested at his home in Edmond, Oklahoma, on July 17 and charged on the following day with engaging in “illicit sexual conduct with under-age children.” The statement claimed Durham was a volunteer at Upendo Children’s Home in Nairobi that was founded by a US citizen. Durham volunteered with Upendo between June 2012 to December 2013, and April 30 to June 17, 2014. It is alleged that on his last trip to Kenya, Durham insisted on staying at the children’s home in an “overflow bunk” rather than at an offsite facility and allegedly committed the offence from April to June 2014. Durham is accused of engaging in sexual acts with multiple children, both male and female, ranging from ages 4 to 10.

Youth protest demolition of their kiosks Youths from Kibera disrupted traffic along Ngong Road early today as they rioted in protest of the demolition of their kiosks by the Nairobi County Inspectorate officers last night. County Inspectorate officers said the sheds were built without approval. The youths burnt tyres and blocked the road near Nakumatt Prestige in protest. Kilimani police boss Peter Kattam said there were no destruction of property.

Kenyans are the world’s biggest mobile money spenders Kenyans spend the most money on their mobile phones. According to Mary Meeker from venture capital company, Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers (KPCB), there are around 5.2 billion mobile users across the world. And of the millions who use mobile money, Kenyans spend the most. Meeker, a Partner at KPCB, says that heavy spenders are those prepared to purchase “big ticket items” at $150+ (up to and over Sh13,200). These spenders tend to come from growth markets where mobile money is popular, she explains. From the Kenyans who use their phones for money transfers, 67 per cent are big spenders while Nigeria and Mexico come second with
61 per cent of their mobile money users spending big. “Kenyan’s have the highest proportion of heavy spenders and it is these markets, particularly African nations that are driving the adoption of mobile money,” says Meeker. As a pioneer in mobile money transactions, it is no surprise that Kenya takes the lead. When mobile money transfer service, M-Pesa was launched in 2007, it took the country by storm. At the time, the service had less than 17,000 users and less than 1,000 agents to serve them. Now the platform has more than 40,000 agents helping 17 million of its users send and receive money.

He said there are 30, 000 matatus operating in the city with only 11, 000 paying the fees and that the waiver will not include those not registered with the saccos that negotiated the deal. Matatus blocked major roads and disrupted business in the city in March to protest the increase of parking fees.

Scientists stumble on new human virus Scientists have discovered a new virus thought to have been living inside the gut of almost half the world’s population undetected for decades now. In a research paper appearing yesterday in Nature Communications, scientists from San Diego State University in the US announced the discovery of a virus named crAssphage which they say infects one of the most common types of gut bacteria, Bacteroidetes. This phylum of bacteria is thought to be connected with obesity, diabetes and other gut-related diseases. Robert A. Edwards, a bioinformatics professor at SDSU, and his colleagues stumbled upon the virus while working with visiting researcher and corresponding author on the study Bas E. Dutilh, now at Radboud University Medical Centre in The Netherlands. They were using results from previous studies on gut-inhabiting viruses to screen for new viruses. In the DNA fecal samples from 12 different individuals, they noticed a particular cluster of viral DNA, about 97,000 base pairs long, that the samples all had in common. The researchers then screened for the virus across the database of the National Institute of Health’s Human Microbiome Project (HMP), and Argonne National Laboratory’s MG-RAST database, and again found it in abundance in samples derived from human faeces. Fellow SDSU virologist John Mokili used DNA amplification to locate the virus in the original samples used to build NIH’s database as proof that it existed.
Up to 462 dead in three crashes in seven days A total of 462 people have died in the last one week in three aviation tragedies across three continents. An Algerian aircraft carrying 110 passengers and six crew members which crashed yesterday in Mali, North Africa, is the latest in the series of aviation disasters this year. The Flight AH5017 operated by Air Algérie vanished from radar screens about 50 minutes after taking off from Burkina Faso en route to Algerian
Capital Algiers. It had reportedly asked to divert from its planned course because of heavy rain and poor visibility over northern Mali. Authorities in Mali and Burkina Faso today said the wreckage had been found on Malian territory scattered and burned, with no survivors. There had been reports of massive sandstorms in the region before the plane disappeared shortly after changing course. It was not thought to
have transmitted any distress signal. Officials in Burkina Faso, Algeria and France said no hypotheses were being ruled out, including a terrorist bombing or hijack, but they seriously doubted that the Islamist forces and militias in northern Mali possessed surface-toair missiles powerful enough to shoot down the plane. A week ago a Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine by separatist rebels,
killing all 298 on board – including 193 Dutch citizens, 10 Britons, four Germans, four Belgians as well as dozens of Malaysians, Australians and Indonesians. On Wednesday a TransAsia Airways flight in Taiwan crashed in bad weather, killing 48 passengers including two French exchange students. Almost half the passengers on board the Air Algerie Flight 5017, 51 people, were reported to be French.
globalview The war against cancer rages on Kevin Stonewall, 19, could be on his way to curing cancer. The teenager from Chicago, US, discovered a critical age-related drawback in an experimental vaccine to prevent colon cancer in mice. Stonewall’s revelation has led to the development of a vaccine that could work on seniors. He has spent the last year studying at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he is researching a colon cancer vaccine that could eventually be tested on humans. The vaccine has the potential to eradicate colon cancer down the road. “I am very passionate about doing colon cancer research,” Stonewall said. “If it works on humans, I would be overwhelmed. My whole life would flash in front of me.” His commitment to ending colon cancer stems from his freshman year at the Chicago High School of Agricultural
Sciences, when his friend’s uncle was diagnosed with the disease. Stonewall witnessed his friend go from a model student to one with bad grades and trouble outside the classroom as his uncle became sicker and eventually passed away. “I saw the impact on him and how it impacted his life,” Stonewall said. “Cancer has taken over a whole bunch of lives, and I felt like I needed to step up and do something about it.” By his junior year, Stonewall began researching a potential colon cancer vaccine while doing an internship at Rush Labs. Stonewall set out to test whether the potential colon cancer vaccine had the same effect on both younger and older mice. He found that after three days of living with the vaccine, all of the younger mice’s tumors were eliminated and they showed immunity to colon cancer.

US group in Sh176m Kibera water project A Non-Governmental Organisation, Human Needs Project, has launched a Sh176 million water project that will ensure the supply of clean drinking water to over 150,000 residents in Kibera slum. The project has been launched in partnership with Kenyan firm Davis & Shirtliff HNP is a San Francisco-based organization working to provide clean water to families in urban slums. The project, located in the Katwekera area of Kibera, behind Olympic Primary School, is the first of its kind in the world. HNP plans to replicate the model at Nairobi’s Kawangware and Soweto as well as South Africa and US. The facility comes as part of a new centre that is based at Gatwikira, in Kibera. It
will provide community members with water, toilets, vocational training, Wi-Fi internet and micro-credit facilities. In Nairobi, 60 per cent of residents live in informal settlements but less than half have access to piped water, says the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC). Informal settlements report high levels of water and sanitation issues, with the frequency of deaths in Kibera for children under the age of five from diarrhoea running at three times the average for Nairobi, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says. “Many parts of Kibera are plagued by illegal connections and vandalised water lines that run through sewers, which may
be contaminated,” said Connie Nielsen, Co-founder of HNP. HNP has sunk a borehole that is connected to a water pump which produces 20,000 litres per hour. The pumped water goes through a treatment centre from which safe drinking water is available in taps. Solar collectors are used to provide residents with hot water systems and a back-up generator. The equipment has been installed by Davis & Shirtliff, the region’s leading water and solar equipment supplier. In the past two years, the NGO has grouped 56 local investment groups under a Sacco to be based at the centre.

US has lifted a two-day flight ban into Israel’s Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport even as Washington described the situation in the region as still unstable. The Federal Aviation Administration, which is the US aviation regulator, on Tuesday suspended flights to the Gaza Strip over the on-going clashes between the Israel and Palestine. It later extended the ban to Wednesday. “ FAA has lifted restrictions on US airline flights into and out of Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport by cancelling a Notice to Airmen it renewed earlier today (Wednesday),” the regulator told journalists. This comes amid cancelation of flights into and out of Israel by French
and German airlines over safety concerns. But British Airways says it has no such plans. Background Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had asked US Secretary of State John Kerry to ensure the ban is lifted. Israel Transport Ministry had assured US that Ben Gurion Airport is safe, and there were no justifications for banning flights into the country. Heavy fighting has erupted between the Israeli army and Palestinian group Hamas which has been firing rockets into Israel in the last 16 days. Reports say the conflict has claimed more than 710 Palestinians, mainly civilians, and 30 Israelis.

Poll: Food eats up half of household budgets Kenyan households spend about 52 per cent of household budget on food. An Integrated Household Survey has shown that the largest proportion of food budget is on staple foods, including ugali, beef and green vegetables.
The household budget covers medical expenses, small electronics, water, electricity and new furniture. It does not include rent and applies to furnished houses. “Food spending is the single most important component of the household budget, accounting for 52 per cent of all household spending,” say Djesika Amenda, Steven Buigut and Shukri Mohamed, researchers from the African Population and Health Research Centre in Nairobi. A report by Egerton University says the poorest households, with a monthly income of Sh8,171, spend Sh1,035 of a salary on maize meal for ugali. The richest spend about the same amount of resources. Milk consumers spend about Sh60 per month as the richest spend Sh250. On average, Nairobi households take 2.36 litres of soda a month, equivalent to 8 bottles. Farmers use bats to fight fruit pests There is probably very litte good to say about bats, but fruit farmers in Kisii swear by these frighteningly ugly and respulsive little creatures. The farmers use bats to fend off insects that have been destroying their crops. By ‘recruiting’ the flying mammals, the farmers have realised a significant drop in insect infested fruits. The bats eat the flies, saving the farmers thousands of shillings they would have had to
ciymarket It’s business as usual at Mutindwa Traders in Mutindwa market have grown accustomed to the occasional demolition of the market as new county laws are passed and enforced. Looking at the market from a high rise in Buru Buru, it would be impossible to tell any signs of an upcoming development, or even of the last demolition that followed the train-matatu crash that killed 15 people early this year. The market, located between Buru Buru and Umoja estates, is bustling with activities from 9am to around 10pm despite a recent demolition exercise on November 5, 2013 to create space for the construction of the Outering Road dual carriage. The merchandise sold include clothing, although the market is a source for all manner of items such as food, grains, furniture, crockery, among others. Being a strategic point for small scale traders, the demand for space is high, pushing the rent all the way to at times Sh10, 000 for a four squarefoot shed. Jacinta, a DVD vendor in the market, has run her business for close to three years now.
spend on pesticides. One bat can eat up to 1,200 mosquito-sized insects every hour, and each bat usually eats 6,000 to 8,000 insects each night. The farmers in Nyamira, hounded by notorious insects like fruit flies, mango gall flies and mango mealy bugs, invested a fortune in non performing pesticides until an agricultural officer from the Moi University told them to try the bats approach.
Many laughed off the idea but those who tried it were impressed. Phillip Onyonka, a mango and avocado farmers saw his yield improve just three months after introducing the bats in his orchard. “I had lost 400kgs of mango and avocado and I had nothing else to loose,” he recalls. “When next the trees started flowering, I was shocked to see the fruits matured.” Farmers domesticate the bats
by building cages with rafts. The rafts are placed on the roof of the cages, where the bats can hang. The cages contain a strategic opening which faces the farmers’ trees. This natural pest control method is very popular with more than 200 farmers adopting it. The domestication, however, is no easy task as the bats are hard to trace. Their slow reproduction makes it worse as they give birth to only one pup a year.
Having small change boosts sales, rises profits Small and medium-sized businesses that use coins and notes in small denominations increase their profits by up to 8 per cent compared to those enterprises that don’t. Abdul Jameel, a researcher on behalf of NGO, Innovation for Poverty Action, has found that, in Kenya, businesses that carry a lot of loose change get the most customers. By focusing on one particular business decision for small firms, Jameel and his team of researchers found that not having proper change can have an impact of a firm’s profit level. “If a firm does not have sufficient small bills or coins to give a buyer change, the buyer may choose to buy the item elsewhere and the firm would lose the sale,” he says. “Estimates suggest that the average firm in parts of Kenya loses 5 to 8 per cent of profits due to lost sales occasioned by of a lack of small change.” The businesses included in the study, which were randomly selected from 10 market centres in Kenya, included barbers, tailors or other artisans, market vendors, and hardware shops. The typical business was small, with only 16 per cent of them having any salaried workers. “More than 50 per cent of firms reported having lost at least one sale in the previous seven days for lack of change,” says Jameel.

SHOES: CA Bata outlet. The company’s products can now also be bought online throught Jumia Online platform.
Local footwear manufacturer and retailer, Bata, has announced that it will start selling its products on Jumia, Kenya’s famous online marketplace. The Jumia online marketplace is a platform that allows sellers to showcase their products, transforming their physical store to an electronic one. Bata said they chose the online platform due its popularity and to increase sales. “The convenience Jumia online marketplace offers our customers is exciting since the access to their favourite products is just a click away and will be delivered anywhere in Kenya,” Bata said in a statement. Jumia allows merchants to monitor their sales as well as pending, shipped and cancelled orders on their own. “Bata customers will now have access to a stylish range of shoes
without having to fight through traffic or visit the stores,” Parinaz Firozi, Managing Director of Jumia Kenya, said. “They can shop straight from their mobile phones through our mobile app. When they shop on Jumia, they are still shopping from Bata.” Merchants listing on the website enjoy a convenient selling experience, with Jumia handling the product warehousing, marketing, customer care, delivery and after sales services. Jumia then pays the cash from the sales to the merchants at an agreed date. To sell on the website, a retailer’s products have to be brand-new, unopened in their original packaging, with all original packaging materials. The seller can then upload the product image with a description before it goes live on the company’s website.

Poets missing in action I look for you without success. Every time I look for the young ones to urge them join the poetry arena, they turn their backs on me with twisted noses. Do we fear the arena, or did classical poets die with the artistic beauty in poems? Ladies and gentlemen, encourage young ones to venture into poetry. Let us return to the old tunes and rhythms as we create poetic beauty for our hearts.
Things should be going your way right now, Cancer. Feel confident about yourself and your decisions. Let your inner glow radiate outward and show people that you have a great deal of love to offer. Practice what you preach.

makingup Pull it off with bright pink lipstick Nothing attracts attention to your lips than a bright colour. Bright lips can be daunting especially if it is out of your comfort zone. They are a great way to add playfulness to one’s looks while at the same time give a confidence boost. Pink lips is a fun and trendy look to try all year round and it does not have to be scary. Here are a few tips to comfortably pull off a bright pink lipstick. Choose the right shade Picking the right hue of hot pink lipstick to match your
skin tone is key in pulling off this look. People with lighter complexions should go for a cooler toned shade and vice versa. It is advisable to try the shades before buying to see which best suits you. Prime your lips Bright colours bring out flaws and imperfections on dry and chapped lips. To avoid this, the lips have to be prepped before applying the lip colour. Use a scrub or warm washcloth to gently exfoliate the lips and apply a moisturising lip balm on the
lips before applying lipstick. Gradually build up the colour You may want to just apply in one go, but building up the colour is a smart move. Apply more than one coat to ensure a greater colour depth thus creating a longer lasting application. This means you will not have to reapply your lipstick a hundred times during the day. Keep it simple The key to making the pink lipstick pop is applying minimalistic makeup to the rest of your face.
POWERFUL: Pink lipstick brings about an image of playfullness, while giving the wearer a confidence boost.
pout: Intelligent make up can give one full luscious lips.
Plump your pout the simple way You don’t have to go under the knife or endure painful injections of collagen to get the perfect lips for that sexy pout. All women desire luscious lips but as we age, the lips lose collagen which causes them to thin. This is caused by sun exposure or smoking but worry not as it is reversible, thanks to a few tips that will keep your lips looking full and kissable. What one needs to know is how to apply lip products in a way that gives the illusion o fuller lips. The first thing to do is exfoliate the lips. Dry and flaky lips are an instant turn
off and no one wants to kiss them. Brush your lips after brushing your teeth. This will eliminate dead skin cells leaving them soft. Keep them moisturized. When moisturizing your face do not forget about your lips, use lip balms glycerine or petroleum jelly to keep them moisturized all day. This will also offer sun protection for the lips. When applying a lip liner, the key to creating the fuller lip effect is to get the right lip liner. If you have thin lips, use a lip liner that is closer in colour to your natural lips not your lipstick or gloss. It is best to define

your existing lip line instead of trying to create one that may end up making a clown out of you. It also helps keep the lipstick or gloss in place. For those with fuller lips, they can get away with using a lip liner in the same colour as their lip shade. Always use a sharpened pencil to create definition. Darker colours make the lips look thin, so use a lighter shade of lipstick to make them look fuller. But if you really love the darker shades, add a touch gloss to the middle of the bottom lip. The gloss reflects light to create the illusion of fuller lips.

The system generates electricity to charge the battery when the driver is braking, and automatically cuts the engine when the speed drops below 8 km/h allowing the engine to use low fuel than before. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s official all-electric range is 101kms and rated the Smart ED with a combined fuel economy of 2.7l petrol equivalent/100 km. As for safety, from model year 2012 onward, the Fortwo featured a total of eight dualstage airbags in the Coupe— front, knee, side for thorax/ pelvis and window curtain and a total of six dual-stage airbags in the Cabrio model—front, knee, side (thorax/head) dualIn Kenya, the 2006 model sells at Sh1,700,000, while the Smart Brabus Turbo 700cc goes for Sh1,560,000.

Radar and laser-based active cruise-control systems have been available on premium cars for a number of years. They modulate engine power and brakes to maintain a certain distance behind a vehicle. But iterations are more intelligent and make the car’s security far better than the old models. The latest systems, such as Toyota’s adaptive cruise control, can scan for slower-moving vehicles on roads with light or no traffic. They can apply brakes while approaching. Audi’s Active Cruise and Breaking warns a driver with a beep about on-coming vehicles even in other lanes. But the most active systems can pull the vehicle to a full stop if they detect that the vehicle ahead is not moving. Volvo’s “city safety” system is active only at speeds less than 29km, but systems like Mercedes’ Pre-Safe, which works in conjunction with the adaptive cruise control, can completely halt the vehicle from any speed. Based on your pocket size, ‘Active Cruise and Breaking’ is an accessory to go for. However, you are not guaranteed of 100 per cent safety. Your safety lies entirely with you.

Barcelona striker Bojan joins Stoke Stoke City have signed striker Bojan Krkic from Spanish giants Barcelona for an undisclosed fee, the Premier League side said on Thursday. Bojan, 23, has agreed a four-year contract at the Britannia and becomes Stoke’s fifth summer signing. Stoke boss Mark Hughes told the club’s website: “Anyone who knows European football will be aware of him as a player and the fact that he sees his future at Stoke City is really exciting and an endorsement of the club itself. “He’s desperate to prove himself in the Premier League and we’re pleased to be able to offer him that platform.” Bojan was expected to fly out to Germany to join his new teammates, including former Barca defender Marc Muniesa, at Stoke’s pre-season training camp. Bojan, capped once by Spain, came
up through the Barca academy to score 41 goals in 163 appearances before joining Roma in 2011. After failing to leave a lasting impression in the Italian capital, he was loaned out to AC Milan prior to his return to the Nou Camp after the 2012/13 season. He spent last year on loan to Dutch giants Ajax and helped the Amsterdam club secure a record 33rd Eredivisie title. Bojan’s arrival at the Britannia adds to Mame Biram Diouf, Steve Sidwell, Phil Bardsley and Teixeira in the new signings list.

Second postponement for Nairobi 10km race The Nairobi 10km run, which was set for this Sunday, has been pushed to August 17. The postponement will pave way for the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, and IAAF world Youth championships set for Eugene in USA. The inaugural race was initially set for May before it was delayed to July 27 to allow title sponsors Lap Trust adequate preparations. The race seeks to ensure fulfilled athletes’ lives by launching endowment funds for investment. The money is payable as pension at the end of an athlete’s career to secure future social welfare. Lap Trust Group CEO Hosea Kili says stories on veteran stars who are suffering in retirement after flying the national flag had persuaded them to join the drive.
“There is need to invest during your youthful days because the life of an athlete is short. There is need to take good care of life after active learning,” he said. The run is organised by Athletics Kenya AK Nairobi County in conjunction with Golazo Sports, an international athletics event organiser and the company that organisers Diamond League events for Kenyan athletes in Europe. Nairobi AK secretary Gerge Kariuki, who is also the race technical director, said they target more than 5,000 runners by the close of registration on August 10. “Nairobi needs to borrow a leaf from big city marathons like London, Berlin, Chicago, Rotterdam and New York by being involved,” said Kariuki.
Kenya open games campaign with Cook Islands showdown All is set for the first match against Cook Islands when the seven-aside rugby programme kicks off on Saturday at Ibrox Stadium. Injured Ongori wishes teammates well Marathoner Philes Ongori is coming to terms with missing the Commonwealth Games following last minute injury on Sunday. The Birmingham World Half Marathon silver medallist was not even replaced in the women’s marathon team leaving only former Boston winner Caroline Kilel and Pauline Cheyech to chase the medals for Kenya over the 42km distance in Glasgow. Ongori, who ran a marathon career best of 2:23:22 for
a ninth finish in Boston in April, finished second in Prague last year and was seeking first honours for her nation over the ultimate distance on what was to be her debut Games. “I have been training hard for this occasion, to be honest its heart-breaking to be ruled as my injury is recurring, I wish it was different,” said the athlete. She has, however, well wishes to team Kenya, who she has no doubt
will bring honours back. She said Cheyech, who ran her personal best in Paris in April, and the 2011 Boston champion, Kilel, who also won the Frankfurt last year in a 2:22.34 personal best, will do Kenya proud. “I am sure they will win medals for Kenya. They are good runners,” she said. Cheyech on her part said she will be flying Kenya’s flag high while feeling sorry for Ongori who had to be ruled out.
In Robert Matano, Ulinzi Stars seem to have a man who will lead them to the title for the first time in four years. The self-proclaimed lion has done well so far to stop the rot at the club during the reign of Salim Ali who had gone five matches winless at the start of the season. Speaking after Wednesday’s 2-0, win over Mathare United at the Machakos Stadium, his fifth league win for the club, Matano said he intends to return the club to title challenge next season. He has lost just twice since taking over Ulinzi and drawn five times. “To be honest we were slow off the blocks this season. However, what we are building on is a side that can win the league next season. I know

that is a bold thing to say, but my players know exactly that,” said Matano, a league winner with Tusker FC in 2012 “The team is gelling well. Not conceding goals and getting them on the other end will bring the confidence back, hopefully we will get there sooner than expected,” said Matano, whose side lies in seventh in the league. Matano has hyped prise on holding midfielder Boniface Onyango , one of the scorers on Wednesday who made his competitive debut for the soldiers this month after his switch from City Stars. “He has settled in very well, he is a big mentality, I know he will learn a lot from the likes of Kevin Amwayi and Stephen Ocholla,” he said.
Atletico Madrid president hails new buy Mandzukic is a fantastic striker Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo believes that while Diego Costa is “a fantastic striker”, Atletico Madrid have, in Mario Mandzukic, replaced the Spain international with “the best centre-forward in Europe”. Costa played an integral role in the Rojiblancos’ Liga triumph last season, as well as their run to the Champions League final, with 36 goals in 52 appearances in all competitions. However, Atletico sold the
Brazil-born attacker to Chelsea for Sh5.6 billion this month having already wrapped up a Sh2.6billion deal with Bayern Munich for Mario Mandzukic, who had been deemed surplus to requirements following the arrival of Robert Lewandowski at the Allianz Arena. Cerezo does not view the Croat as a like-for-like replacement for Costa, but he does feel that Atletico have pulled off a major coup.
“We are talking about two different styles,” the Rojiblancos supremo told reporters at the club’s preseason training camp. “Costa is a fantastic striker, but Mandzukic is a player we really like and who we will adjust our game to. Mario wanted to play for Atletico and Bayern had another option and that is why he is here. “For me, Mandzukic is the best centre-forward in Europe.”

Illness pulls Mo Farah out of Games Mo Farah has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games after failing to recover from a recent illness. The Double Olympic gold medallist in 5,000m and 10,000m at London 2012 and was set to run both distances in Scotland. Farah, 31, will, however, stay at his training camp to work on his fitness ahead of August’s European Championships in Zurich. The England athlete said it was a “tough decision. The sickness I had two weeks ago was a big setback.” He added: “Training is getting better but I need another few weeks to get back to the level I was at in 2012 and 2013. “I really wanted to add the Commonwealth titles to my Olympic and World
Championships, but the event is coming a few weeks too soon for me. “My body is telling me it’s not ready to race yet.” Farah’s decision is another setback to the Games after a number of key withdrawals in athletics events. Former world 100m champion Yohan Blake of Jamaica was ruled out because of a hamstring operation. UK’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson withdrew from the women’s heptathlon on Monday with a foot injury. Farah had missed the Diamond League meeting in Glasgow earlier this month because of illness but was confident of appearing, saying training was going good”.

With Xavi flirting with New York City FC and the Red Bulls before spurning their advances to stay in Barcelona, Lampard will to join Villa at NYC FC. He and the other Chelsea players were fined by the EPL side, and Lampard has since said he regrets his past mistakes, but feels young men in other careers don’t get the same attention for youthful indiscretions.
