“The extension is given to allow more students to make their second and final choices,” said KUCCPS chief executive John Muraguri said.

The students risk being locked out of universities and colleges of they fail to meet the demands for course choices. More than 30,000 applicants are expected to meet the requirements for various courses in colleges and universities to avoid being locked out.

The revision started last week following an earlier report by the KUCCPS. The process targets 16,000 students seeking to pursue degree programs in public universities while the rest seek opportunities in colleges for diploma and certificate programmes.

“Candidates listed on kuccps.uonbi.ac.ke as having qualified for degree programmes but had been picked for diplomas may also apply for degree courses,” Muraguri said.

For degree programmes, candidates will choose up to eight courses of their choice while those of diploma will choose six courses as revealed by the earlier KUCCPS report.

Diploma students who for many years have only been accepted by their local colleges will now be accepted to any college they qualify for throughout the country without area restrictions.

Tanzania maize imports to reduce flour prices The price of maize flour is set to fall after the Government announced plans to import maize from Tanzania.

“The consignment we will get from our neighbours will play a major role in bringing down the cost of flour that is beyond the reach of majority of Kenyans,” Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei told a press briefing.

On Thursday, Koskei, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tanzanian government that will allow for Kenyan traders to tap into the neighbouring state’s national food reserves in a deal which was initiated on June 5, 2014.

“We harvested 58 million bags of maize this year, registering a huge surplus. The government of Kenya requested that we sell them part of our stocks to curb the shortage,” said Mr Christopher Chiza, the Tanzanian Agriculture minister. The government will buy up to 2.4 million bags of maize from Tanzania at a cost of Sh2, 650 per a 90-kilogramme bag at a cost of Sh300 per bag. The maize shortage has raised the cost of a 90-kg bag in Kenya to Sh3, 200, up from Sh2, 900 in April and Sh2, 500 in October.

US man sexts women as his baby dies in the car A 33-year-old man has been accused of deliberately leaving his son in a hot car to die while he exchanged explicit texts with women.

Detectives testifying against the accused told a court in Georgia, USA that the man was sending and receiving texts, some of them nude photos, from six women while his 22-month old son was dying. Lawyer for Justin Ross Harris objected to the testimony by Georgia police detective Phil Stoddard but

Failure rate in trials of new drug worries scientists Scientists have called for an urgent need to increase the number of potential therapies being investigated after 99 per cent drug trials for Alzheimer’s disease during the past decade failed.

A study published in the journal Alzheimer’s Research & Therapy shows only one new medicine has been approved since 2004.

The drug failure rate is troubling and higher than that for other diseases such as cancer, the researchers say.

Dr Jeffrey Cummings, of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, in Las Vegas, and colleagues, examined a public website that records clinical trials.

Between 2002 and 2012, they found 99.6 per cent of trials of drugs for preventing, curing or improving the symptoms of Alzheimer’s had failed or been discontinued.

This compares with a failure rate of 81 per cent for cancer drugs. The failure rate was “especially troubling” given the rising dementia prevalence.

“There is a worrying decline in the number of clinical trials for Alzheimer’s treatments in more recent years,” the study says.

“There is a danger that the high failure rates of trials in the past will discourage pharmaceutical companies from investing in dementia research. The only way we will successfully defeat dementia is to continue with high quality, innovative research, improve links with industry and increase investment in clinical trials.”

Dr Eric Hill, of the School of Life and Health Sciences at Aston University, said more research was needed to understand Alzheimer’s .

Mobile wars to cut cash transfer costs A move by Equity Bank and two new mobile network operators could drive down the cost of mobile money transfers. As equity prepares to launch an upgraded mobile money system, the heat is on established operators to either reduce their prices or risk losing their customers.

Last month Equity Bank, in a partnership with mobile service provider, Airtel, unveiled a service that will help the bank reduce its cost of delivering mobile services to its customers.

“If we take the example of Equity Bank’s new regime, sending and receiving money will cost one per cent of the value,” said Equity Bank agent, Deogratias Kathurima. “This means

that a customer will part with only Sh1 to withdraw Sh100, while the maximum charged for withdrawal of any amount is Sh25. This is good for both customers and agents.”

The lender jokingly called the move ‘Equity 3.0’ in order to assure competitors that it was not a new mobile money platform but an improvement on an existing system.

“We are not starting a new service,” explained Equity Bank CEO, James Mwangi in an earlier statement. “We are going a step further by leasing unused capacity on Airtel Kenya’s network to scale up our offerings.”

Using Airtel’s network and a system which employs what are known as Mobile Virtual Network Operators

(MVNO), Equity hopes to turn the mobile money market on its head.

An MVNO is a cell phone carrier (such as a prepaid wireless carrier) that does not have its own network set-up. It uses the networks of bigger cell phone carriers like, say, Airtel Kenya.

The system will allow users to be issued with branded SIM cards and provide services similar to those offered by mobile service operators. The SIM cards are tiny and can latch on to existing SIM cards so users don’t have to lose their current mobile phone numbers.

Kathurima said the expected regime would see customers pay lower fees than they currently are on M-Pesa, Airtel Money, YuCash and Orange Money.

Facebook buys video advert firm Facebook has acquired LiveRail, a technology start-up that helps companies place more relevant advertisements in videos that appear on websites and applications.

The financial terms of the deal were not revealed.

However, it is believed that it cost the social network firm between $400 million (Sh35.1 billion) and $500 million (Sh43.9 billion) to buy the firm.

LiveRail helps online publishers such as PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) make money from videos they produce by connecting them to advertisers who want to buy ads through an automated bidding process.

Earlier this year, it had said it would start serving ads to third-party mobile apps through a new network.

It is estimated that more than £1bn (Sh150 billion) was spent on mobile ads in UK alone in 2013.

This has led to social networking platforms, including Twitter, to consider ways to attract more advertisers to tap into the sector’s growth.

Last year, Twitter acquired MoPub a mobile advertising exchange that acts as a mediation service, allowing marketers to manage the placement of advertisement across several networks, including Facebook.

US retail giant bans customer guns Following a series of violent shootings in parts of US Target, a ‘family-friendly’ retail giant has asked customers not to bring guns into its stores.

“We respectfully request that guests not bring firearms to Target, even in communities where it is permitted by law,” Target CEO, John Mulligan wrote in a statement on the company›s corporate blog.

He said that guns were not part of the retailer’s ‘family atmosphere.’

Gun control activists have since applauded Target’s new rule.

“Moms everywhere were

horrified to see images of people carrying loaded assault rifles down the same aisles where we shop for diapers and toys,” Shannon Watts, the founder of advocacy group, Moms Demand Action wrote in a statement. Her group was pleased with Target’s decision to take action.

History The US has been plagued by a series of shootings over the past few months. The country has what other nations describe as lax gun control rules, allowing virtually anyone over the age of 21 to own a firearm.

Recent incidents include a

shooting in New Orleans on June 29, 2014, where 9 people were injured.

The shootings have sparked outrage from activists who have called on the US government to enforce stricter gun control rules.

In mid-June, members of a group called Open Carry Texas demonstrated against the enforcement of these rules by carrying rifles in a Target branch in the area, leading to a rebuke from the National Rifle Association for their tactics.

Implications Targets move may encourage other companies and businesses to do the same. In

A survey describes about 70 per cent of Nairobi’s population (more than 2 million) with average salary of Sh11,274. The study was carried out by Djesika Amenda, Steven Buigut and Shukri Mohamed, researchers from the African Population and Health Research Centre in Nairobi.

From their income, about Sh1,298 is spent on rent because housing is expensive across the county. Most Nairobi estates have experienced a rise in rent prices in the past year.

Sakina Hassanali, head of research for real estate company, Hass Consult, says the asking price for rents in South C, South B, Upper Hill and Muthaiga North have risen by up to 20 per cent. South B has witnessed a 19 per cent hike in average rental asking price. It has jumped to Sh35,200 per month from Sh29,500 a year ago.

The study shows that more than half of the 2 million residents share sanitary facilities in their dwellings.

These include toilets, bathrooms and showers. This is unlike Nairobi’s fortunate 30 per cent of residents who have self-contained facilities.

Amenda says “formal employment, owning a business and rent-free housing” are luxuries that most Nairobi residents cannot afford.

With nothing to lose, he bought the first packet and planted them on his farm. After three months, they were ready for harvesting. It took him another two months before his fortunes turned. “I was getting three litres of milk but the shrubs now increased the milk production up to 9 litres.

Talam who now owns 10 cows and gets over 80 litres of milk a day, which he supplies to Kabiyet Dairies Company Limited.

It is prudent for owners of new businesses to test their products or services before releasing them to the market. That’s where Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) comes in.

Tony Dunn, a lecturer from the Charles Sturt University, says that RRA is a cheap method used to gather information about a particular item or service before it is officially sold to the public.

The system works by simply giving a group of people an item and asking them to test it for themselves.

“RRA emerged in the late 1970s in response to some of the problems scientists had with large-scale, structured questionnaires and surveys,” says Dunn. He says that it provided an alternative technique for anyone to quickly learn from local people about their realities and their challenges. Selling frozen chapatis, for instance, has proven to be successful after a group known as Burhani Bakers tested their product on bachelors living around Nairobi. However, RRA is not entirely accurate since it relies on personal opinions rather than scientific research. However, it is sometimes successful, owing to the fact that the people being tested may share the same opinions as many others living in and around their location.

Lung disease risk for 25m kerosene users

RISKY AFFAIR: Costly, polluting, unhealthy, and unsafe, this kerosene lamp can burn up more than 1/3 of this Kenyan woman’s weekly income.

Close to 25 million Kenyans are at risk of getting lung disease and tubercolosis as the use of Kerosine continues to take a toll on their health.

As many as 1.5 million of them may develop lung cancer in the coming years if they do not switch from kerosene to a less dangerous source of fuel, Health Cabinet Secretary, James Macharia has said.

“Indoor air pollution is a serious challenge facing not only Kenya but most other low and middle income countries,” he said during a sensitising campaign dubbed, ‘Brighten up a Life’.

Macharia noted that 60 per cent of the country uses harmful kerosine since they either have no access to or cannot afford to pay for electricity.

“In Kenya, more than half the population is off the electricity grid in both urban and rural settings due to varied reasons. These sources, in the

long run, cause high levels of household air pollution that have many health damaging pollutants like soot particles that penetrate deep into the lungs,” he said “The state of the economy has left many Kenyans using kerosene and other fuel based sources as their primary sources of lighting and cooking, exposing them to numerous health hazards.”

“The use of kerosene for lighting and cooking equates to smoking two packs of cigarettes per day,” argues Doctor Jeremiah Chakaya, Head ofthe Kenya Association for Prevention of TB and Lung Disease. “This is how serious the problem is.”

Six percent of lung cancer deaths are a due to household air pollution.

In order to address the problem the Brighten up a Life campaign, a three-month project, targets at least 50,000 Kenyans in eight counties withe the highest use of kerosene.

Reina set for Liverpool return after loan expires Pepe Reina will spend the next season at Liverpool following the end of his loan spell with Napoli, the goalkeeper’s agent has confirmed.

The 31-year-old has two years remaining on his deal with Liverpool but was loaned out to Serie A for the duration of last season as Brendan Rodgers made Simon Mignolet his number one stopper at Anfield.

With the rising uncertainty of the Spaniard future, his agent has broken the long silence about his career.

“I know rumours are circulating about Reina’s future. But I can confirm that next season Pepe will play for Liverpool,” he told Tuttonapoli.it.

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have been among the clubs linked with a bid for Reina this summer, but agent Manuel Garcia Quillon says he will be returning to his parent club.

He, together with Juan Cuadrado and Jackson Martinez, can unlock the Brazilian defence time and time again.

The defence is strong, but sometimes Juan Zuniga and Pablo Armero forget their duties to push up often to join the attack. Doing so against Brazil could prove dangerous as countering is one of their own specialties.

If these guys, along with 38-year-old veteran, Mario Yepes, do not stay focused throughout the game, they will get beaten.

US may bid to host the 2026 WC The United States could bid to host the 2026 World Cup, according to Fifa bosses.

The Americans were knocked out by Belgium on Tuesday.

However, the level of support for Jurgen Klinsmann’s team has been remarkable, with US President, Barack Obama among those tweeting support.

“There is a commitment to work with US Soccer,” said Fifa Secretary General, Jerome Valcke.

Despite starting the tournament on a high, the German performance has gone down several notches as the tournament has progressed. Instead of hitting top gear, they have laboured their way past USA

and Algeria in their last two matches.

Former German captains have criticised their performance. Thomas Muller has been the main source of goals for Germany in the tournament. Their midfield has generally been solid throughout the tournament and it remains their biggest strength. Mats Hummels remains a doubt for the game with injury. His replacement, Shkodran Mustafi, has been ruled out of the World Cup with an injury he picked up against Algeria. Bastian Schweinsteiger limped off in the same game.

France do not have any injuries to worry about. Le Bleus have quietly gone about their business with no hype surrounding their young Paul Pogba, whose header helped France beat Nigeria has been impressive but striker Karim Benzema has looked out of sorts after his great showing in the first two group games.

Didier Deschamps has ingrained a problem-solving ability in this team. France have shown a very important quality that big teams have – patience. They have slowly worn out teams and played their best football in the second half of the games.

Midfield star to link up with new SA club July 9 Kenyan international midfielder Kevin Ade Omondi is set to link up with his new team, Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Moroka Swallows mid next week.

Club boss Leon Prins revealed that the skilful player is expected in South Africa on Wednesday 9 July.

“It’s a done deal. He is expected to arrive in the country next week Wednesday”, Prins said.

Omondi signed a two-year contract with the club from Fisa Academy, who had loaned him out to Kenya Premier League (KPL) side Gor Mahia.

Gor Mahia had earlier refused to let the player go agreed to release Kevin ‘Ade’ Omondi to join South African top-tier side Moroka Swallows.

The reigning KPL champions had previously refused to issue a release letter to the player after failing to agree on proceeds share with his parent club, Fisa.

2 die in Brazil bridge collapse An unfinished overpass collapsed in the Brazilian World Cup host city of Belo Horizonte on Thursday, killing at least two people, emergency officials said.

Television images showed the front of a passenger bus crushed by the overpass, which was located about two miles (3 km) from the Mineirão Stadium where World Cup games are being played. Other vehicles were also crushed underneath the wreckage.

Two people died and 19 were injured, a spokeswoman for the Minas Gerais state health department told Reuters on Thursday. The mayor’s office put the injury toll at 22. A fire department spokesman said there was still one person trapped in a car, and possibly others.

Renata Soares, who said she was on the bus at the

moment of the accident, told GloboNews TV: “We were travelling normally and then there was a terrible noise. I am sure that more people in other cars were underneath the debris.”

GloboNews TV showed video of bloodied passengers of the bus staggering away from the wreckage, screaming. Later, pictures near the scene showed people holding signs that said, “This is the reality of the Cup” and “World Cup disaster: put it on Fifa’s bill.”

“This is the incompetence of our authorities and our businesses,” said Leandro Brito, 23, a bank worker.

“Because of the World Cup they sped everything up to finish faster. That’s why this tragedy has happened. They are not making things properly.

Everyone is very angry.”
