Residents of Nairobi are at high health risks due to increasing levels of waste and industrial pollution in the city.

An estimated 70 per cent of the capital city is covered in waste, 40 per cent of which is collected by the County Council of Nairobi.

Private sector operators collect about 20 per cent while the rest is disposed of through burning, dumping in pits and other illegal methods.

Incineration (burning of waste) is the most popular disposal option but is often applied wrongly with serious health risks to the environment A study by the National Center for Biotechnology on the possible public health risks of burning waste from hospitals has been carried out

in at the Kenyatta National, Nairobi and Moi Teaching hospitala where the process is practised.

The hospitals have incinerators for the destruction of medical waste.

These include needles, syringes, used bandages, expired drugs and other hazardous material. At each incinerator facility, the study sample gases emitted, which were then analysed in laboratories. Findings showed that the emitted gases were mainly oxygen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, nitrous oxide and sulphur dioxide.

“Apart from oxygen, other gases released from the incinerators are harmful to the environment and human health in one way or another,” says Dr Martin Marani, an Environmental Studies lecturer at the University of Nairobi. “Once

in the atmosphere, they can cause health problems like respiratory diseases, seizures, can cause one to go in a coma and even cause death.”

This is ironical given that the fouling of the air occurs at a facility operated by the highest level of life saving organizations - hospitals.

One would imagine that hospital authorities are best placed to know that burning of medical waste is toxic to the environment and to human health.

Apart from air emissions from hospital waste incinerators, Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are major problems in the city. The pollutants are released to the atmosphere due to the use of pesticides and industrial chemicals that contain chlorinated substances, including some plastics.

“A common source of POPs is transformer oil that is often sought after by thieves who later sell it to consumers in industrial sectors,” says Dr Marani. “Some POPs are known to be hormone disruptors in humans and animals. They also cause cardiovascular diseases, cancer, obesity, and diabetes and once in the environment, POPs last long before naturally disintegrating meaning they can continue to cause harm long after being released into the environment.”

They travel great distances in water currents if released into wetlands and through food chains. This means POPs may cause damage among communities located far away from the point of release of the POPs into the environment. For example, POPs have been found in

breast milk. This is because of longrange transport of such chemicals through water systems, birds and other media.

Open waste dumping like it is done at Nairobi’s Dandora dumpsite is a serious health challenge. A study by Envilead, an organisation that helps in the management of health and environmental challenges, found that the dumpsite is a silent killer.

By sampling free-range chicken eggs collected from two sites bordering the dumpsite, results showed that the level of chlorinated chemical compounds exceeded permitted quantities in eggs by over 18 times.

The hens do not feed directly from the dump, but live at the edge where garbage is easily deposited. It was the same case for other animals such as goats, pigs and cows.

Owners risk court charges after pigs starved to death Animal inspectors plan to file criminal charges against those whose actions led to animals starving and eating one another on a farm in the North West Province of South Africa.

The “farm of horrors,” as South African media called it, quickly morphed into a political scandal. The farm’s owner, Thandi Modise, is a prominent official in the governing African National Congress and chairwoman of the upper house of parliament, the National Council of Provinces.

“The suffering that the animals endured does not compare to the financial loss that I suffered,” Modise said in a statement Monday, stirring further controversy.

Modise does not live on the farm but has owned it for three years.

Farm animal neglect is

common in South Africa, but not on this scale, according to animal welfare inspector Andries Venter.

Venter, a senior inspector for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, told the Los Angeles Times that he counted 79 dead animals, including 58 pigs. Inspectors had to euthanize 117 others, most of them also pigs.

Venter said it was the worst case of farm animal cruelty he had seen in 20 years with the NSPCA. He said the animals may have been abandoned for at least a week or two.

Some of the surviving pigs were feeding off others that had perished, he said.

The sheep and goats, which were confined in a barn, were in slightly better condition but extremely thin.

Kamau: Get dirty bills off school buses Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau has ordered the removal of offensive images from school buses.

Kamau said it is illegal to paste materials like alcohol or tobacco adverts, and pornography on or inside school buses.

He said the order also applies to private buses that transport students.

He said the Ministry of Education guidelines on school transportation are clear and it is up to the school management to ensure they are adhered to.

Tech giants create gadgets that will talk to each other Samsung Electronics, Intel Corp and Dell, three of the largest tech companies in the world, have teamed up to come up with ways for household gadgets like thermostats and light bulbs to talk to each other.

The system is not new and experts have come to refer to it as the ‘Internet of Things’.

By creating an interconnected platform, the system will allow anyone with the right mobile phone to remotely turn off the lights in their house, record their favourite TV programme and start downloading files from their computer.

Qualcomm and LG Electronics are also working on a similar system. The three companies

are now among the founding members of Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC), a group of tech firms which will deliver the first of many hassle-free data flow systems.

HELB, World Bank in talks to increase student loans

University students could soon have their government loans increased with the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) already negotiation with the World Bank over the matter.

Helb chief executive has confirmed that the student loan agency is in talks with the World Bank and British Department for International Development for more funding.

“The talks have been ongoing for four months now,” Mr Charles Ringera, the CEO of HELB said.

Ringera said they plan to increase loan allocations by a maximum of 20 per cent to enable beneficiaries meet the cost of living which has already risen.

This comes as good news to students who, over a month ago, violently protested a proposal by the Commission for University Education to increase tuition fees and instead called for the fees to be reduced and the loans increased.

has a significant bearing on the healthy growth of the baby in the womb and on future good health.

Butchers selling harmful meat to city consumers Profit-mad butchers in Nairobi have placed the lives of residents in harm’s way with the sale of uninspected meat to consumers.

The Nairobi County Assembly Committee on Agriculture and Environment in a report on the status of slaughterhouses says meat from abattoir goes to the market uninspected.

This means residents are at high risk of infection from salmonella, a bacterium that occurs mainly in the intestine and causes food poisoning, whenever they eat meat. Symptoms of the disease include diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps.

Benson Amutavi, who chairs the committee, said the slaughter houses are in deplorable conditions and need major uplift.

“The meat from slaughterhouses is rarely inspected and this raises health risks questions,’’ he said.

Even the meat being transported to Nairobi from other counties does not meet the required health standards as veterinary officers in the counties are overwhelmed.

Nacada chairman John Mututho on Tuesday said police failure to arrest and prosecute suspects is hampering efforts to curb drug and alcohol abuse.

“We don’t have powers to prosecute, so if we have to work effectively, its either we get powers or be enjoined with police officers,” Mututho told X-News on phone.

He claimed the officers are pocketing about Sh1.8 million daily in bribes from bars in Nairobi’s Umoja area.

The agency says more than 4000 pub-operating licenses have been stolen from Nacada offices and are being used across the country.

“I only know 4,400 stolen licences and there are other fake ones that I could not be aware of,” he said.

He said Nacada officers were behind loss of permits and conflict between him and other officials.

Amisom foils al Shabaab raid on president’s house African Union (Amisom) troops yesterday thwarted an attack by Al-Shabaab on Somalia’s presidential palace in Mogadishu.

Authorities said the militants stormed the palace on Tuesday, firing their way onto the grounds after a car bomb blasted the gate.

Somali and African Union troops exchanged heavy gunfire with the militants and thwarted the attack, a senior Somali

security official said. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was not harmed and Somalia’s government praised the troops.

“Fortunately, the prompt actions of the Somali National Army, assisted by AMISOM forces (African Union Mission in Somalia), quickly halted the attack,” said government spokesman Mustafa Duhulow.

Three attackers were killed and one was captured, he said.

“Bomb disposal personnel

have rendered safe a number of devices, including a suicide vest that one attacker was wearing that had failed to detonate,” Dhulow said.

Al-Shabaab said it was behind the raid, one of several recent Mogadishu attacks for which the al Qaeda-linked group has claimed responsibility as it presses its campaign to turn Somalia into a fundamentalist Islamic state. Earlier, al-Shabaab spokesman Abdulaziz Abu

Musab claimed the group’s militants had captured the offices of the President and the prime minister.

“Terrorists can make as many claims and threats on the internet as they want,” Mohamud said from his office.

“The attack failed.”

The US State Department issued a statement condemning the attack and praising AMISOM troops, which they support. “Incidents such

as this further demonstrate that insecurity in Mogadishu persists, including very real threats from al-Shabaab,” the statement said.

This comes after several highprofile attacks in the capital, including a car bombing — claimed by al-Shabaab that killed at least six people at the Parliament building on Saturday. On Thursday, gunmen killed one Somali lawmaker.

While many developing countries face similar perceptions, Mathers argues that African countries in particular often find their problems oversimplified or misinterpreted. “The images circulating of Africa set it up as a place of lack, not just of technologies and structures but of responsible adults, competent bureaucrats, even caring people,” she says.

Obesity cuts 14 years from victim’s life, study says Obesity cuts about 14 year of an individual’s lifespan, a new study says.

A report published on the PLOS Medicine journal says mortality rates for obese people is higher than those of the normal weight.

The researchers attribute the higher death risk to diseases that often attack overweight people.

The diseases include cancer, diabetes and heart complications. The scholars from the National Cancer Institute, US, compiled data from 20 prospective group studies from the National Cancer Institute Cohort Consortium.

The 30-years study analysed 9, 564 adults considered to be class III obese and had never smoked.

In deaths per 100,000 persons per year, 856 men and 663 women who died were obese.

The mortality rate for the non-obese men and women was 346.7 and 280.5 respectively.

Heart ailments claimed the highest number of lives, followed by cancer, diabetes and other diseases related to obesity.

The study concluded that those within 40 and 59kg/ m2 (highly obese) shed off between 6.6 to 13.7 years of life.

The researchers say obesity is associated with increased deaths, therefore, there is need of working to prevent early deaths.

“Class III obesity is associated with excess rates of total mortality and mortality due to a wide range of causes, particularly heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, and that the risk of death overall and from these specific causes continues to rise with increasing values of BMI,” they say.

Treasury has said the funds were raised as direct or indirect tax from businesses and consumers.

The money should have been spent in the 2013/2014 financial year but county officials failed to meet their quotas.

The money, which is enough to give every Kenyan Sh1,000 if divided, is lying at the Revenue Fund accounts.

Isaac Ruto, Bomet County Governor and chairman of the Council of Governors, says the cash has not been spent.

Following Treasury’s announcement on July 7, 2014, he said: “Most of the money has been committed by counties on projects. Some of the projects are on-going.”

“The money is committed and waiting to be paid out on projects. The money is for goods and services that have been procured by counties but awaiting delivery by suppliers,” he said.

The State was expected to have disbursed Sh148.9 billion to counties

by March 31, 2014 but only Sh110.1 billion had been disbursed by the end of March 2014. A Quarterly Budget

Report from the Office of the Controller of Budget shows only Nairobi, Bomet and Machakos had received their allocation for February 2014.

No county had received allocation for March 2014 by the end of the quarter.

Last year, Henry Rotich, Cabinet Secretary for Treasury, said through the funds, the country is expected to create a million jobs per year.

He said the money is expected to fund projects that are expected to lift at least 10 million Kenyans out of poverty.

Consumer rights Co-op Bank IT crash leaves customers stranded for weeks Customers are in panic after the Co-operative Bank’s digital systems collapsed about a fortnight ago. Account holders have been unable to access money through ATMs, mobile banking or over the counter.

The breakdown has led to clusters of customers shouting in bank halls.

A spot check by XNews revealed that some customers have been unable to get cash from branches and were forced to queue at counters. Others have taken the fight to the social media.

“Systems down for three days?” asked Moses Otieno, a graphics designer who posted his views on the bank’s Facebook page on June 27, 2014. This was around the time when the crisis became widespread.

“As soon as it is up and running, I am done with y’all. My website has been dead for three days because my host can’t get money through the bank. You can’t mess up my business like this.”

The bank responded to complaints on Facebook

and Twitter with the following message: “We have a system challenge which is being addressed.

Kindly bear with us. In the meantime, you can visit a branch or withdraw from ATM.” Last week, Francis Ngambi, personal assistant to Managing Director Gideon Muriuki, said the systems should have been fixed by now.

But some of the solutions did not work for some customers.

John Suleh, an account holder, said: “My ATM is not working. The card is new. I actually collected last month.”

The hitch follows the introduction of a new law, the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), which provides for punishment of businesses that knowingly let customers down. The Act lists banks, consultancies, and insurance firms as businesses.

Co-op Bank has addressed the public in accordance with the Act. The bank is one of the largest in Kenya, providing services to more than 3.4 million customers.

Living in Nairobi gets more costly for expats Nairobi has risen on the list of the most expensive cities in the world for expatriates.

ECA International, a London-based research firm has ranked Kenya the 176th world’s most expensive city for foreign workers, 18 places up from last year’s rating.

Last year, Nairobi was ranked 194th. Using a scale known as the Cost of Living Index, ECA has determined that Nairobi has become more expensive in terms of compensation of employees on international assignments.

The cost of accommodation

for expats in Nairobi depends on location, but for quality lodging, Expat Arrivals, a travel agency, says the monthly charges for a two or three-bedroom flat in Nairobi are between Sh60, 000 and Sh70,000. Townhouses for expats can cost as much as

Sh80, 000 a month.

“In many cases, employers may offer to shoulder this expense, as well as the required security deposit, usually equivalent to two to three month’s rent,” says Janet Donovan, a travel agent from Expat Arrivals.

Nairobi’s fall does not bode well for the country’s tourism industry since expats and visitors have been leaving in droves following a series of terror attacks in the nation.

The tourism sector has already lost over 7,000 jobs since as tourists numbers fall.

GVEP guarantees loans to help small business owners without collateral to access credit from lenders like EcoBank and Barclays Bank, among others.

“GVEP operates a small loan guarantee programme to support lending by local financial institutions to small businesses,” a statement from the group.

“Under the scheme, GVEP takes some of the risk on loans to small businesses that we believe are worthwhile.”

So far, the scheme has been used mainly for very small businesses, to help them buy equipment, stock their shelves and build their enterprise.

With funding from USAID and support from the Garfield Weston Foundation, Jump Up and Barclays Bank, GVEP was able to set up a fund to develop loan products for small enterprises.

used to make Sh600 a day in profit from a stock of fruits worth Sh500. By adding his supply, he managed to reach profits of up to Sh1, 500 a day. “I started my business in 2012 after seeing my people suffer to buy fruits three kilometres away,” he recalls.

The estimated amount needed to set up a small fruit shop is Sh15, 450. Sh9, 450 goes into building a structure, and Sh5,000 stocks the shelves with fruits.

Milton Katia, a cotton farmer from Kathozweni in Eastern Province, refused to give up on the crop even when local cotton industry was on its deathbed in the 1990s.

Now, he makes Sh110, 000 from an investment of Sh15, 000 on labour, pesticides, fertiliser and seed.

He is also the Cotton Development Authority (CODA) chairman in Makueni The veteran cotton farmer has been growing the fluffy crop since 1979. He was among the few who maintained their farms when cotton prices fell in 1992.

At the time, the prices were too low to sustain any form of investment in the crop, which requires heavy chemical inputs to prevent diseases, and fight off pests like aphids and borers.

Farmers who couldn’t get the chemicals were harvesting as little as 5kgs of cotton per acre. The result was that many abandoned the crop.

Katia was one of the few exceptions.

“I had seen the benefits of farming it in earlier times,” he said.

However, in 2006, CODA was formed to revive the sector. The body was supported by the Ministry

of Agriculture and brought together stakeholders who included ginneries, spinners, researchers, weavers and growers. They were responsible for managing the cotton production chain from it’s cultivation to the marketing phase.

Diabetes is joining world top killers Diabetes is a chronic disease that is fast joining malaria, pneumonia, cancer, HIV/ AIDS, TB and Hepatitis B as the world’s top killers.

The disease occurs when the pancreas fails to produce insulin to control blood sugar levels.

According to the World Health Organisation, WHO, diabetes Type 1 is inherited and majorly affects people aged six months to 30 years.

Diabetes Type 2, which is a lifestyle disease, mostly attacks mature people. However, doctors have reported cases of this variety of diabetes in younger people too.

WHO says more than 371 million people globally are diabetic while 4.6 die of the disease annually.

The man only identified as Mr. Ma, was injured in an accident at work.

Doctors took this drastic measure to save the man’s foot from severe infection and amputation given the grave nature of the injuries. This gave the deep wound on the leg time to heal and the foot was reattached later.

Arteries and veins of the right limb were sewn to

Campers who prefer to pitch tent on a cliff face Camping can be boring at times. It is just sleeping outdoors in a tent waiting for something interesting to happen. Cliff camping, however, takes all dreariness, if any, out of camping.

Cliff camping, also known as High Mountain camping, entails dangling precariously in tents thousands of feet high on a sheer cliff face. Not on the top of the cliff, the side of it with just air and a rocky bottom belo, and certain death if the tent snaps free.

And it is not just pitching a tent, and spending a few minutes or hours there. These insane adrenaline hounds spend the night, even days in these tents.

Dutch tie excites Man U fans Netherlands face Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals tonight in Sao Paulo, a match which promises to be one of the clashes of the tournament.

The 2010 finalists were not considered among pre-cup favourites, although Argentina are living up to the hope that this could be Lionel Messi’s tournament.

Kenya Prisons upcoming middle blocker Edith Mukuvilani Wisa was the surprise inclusion as Kenya National women’s team coach David Lung’aho named his final travelling squad of 12 for the 2014 FIVB Grand Prix Championship.

Lung’aho, who is eager to win his first victory outside Africa evidently went for experience while naming his squad for the lengthy Grand Prix Championship. Wisa is the only player in the squad who has not played for the senior Kenya team.

But Wisa is not short of international experience as she has previously played in the 2013 FIVB World Club Championships in Switzerland and under-23 World Championships in Mexico.
