IPOA scoffs at police recruits scam probe The credibility of investigations into claims of corruption in the recent police recruitment drive by a multi-agency team is a
major doubt after the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) said it has no confidence in the probe. The National Police
Service Commission (NPSC) formed the team drawn from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), National Police Service
Commission, police, Interior ministry, the National Intelligence Service and NGOs to probe the claims and file a report by July 4. The
move followed calls for investigation into claims of corruption and other malpractices that are reported to have marred the exercise.

Police recruits probe in limbo WEDNESday, JULY 30, 2014
From Page 1 But IPOA Chairman Macharia Njeru says apart from EACC, other players were directly involved in the exercise and cannot honestly investigate claims against which they were party to. “If we were to allow this kind of recruitment, we should not lie to ourselves that we are undertaking any kind of police reforms,” Njeru said. “What the police are doing and the National Police Service
Commission makes nonsense of all recommendations that have been made before regarding what we should do in taking the police service forward,” he said. He termed the audit as a public relations exercise meant to divert public attention from issues raised. “The various investigative agencies, among them IPOA and EACC, will pursue other individual cases for the purposes of criminal action and that will take time,” he told Capital FM News in an interview. “We don’t see what this multi-
agency committee is doing other than a public-relations exercise. They even have no business investigating these things; the law says they should be referring to us and to the EACC and we will do our work,” Njeru said. As MPs earlier put on hold the reporting dates for the new recruits, Kipipiri MP Samuel Gichigi criticised NPSC saying it cannot investigate itself since it was at the heart of the recruitment process. And Njeru said the taskforce
“cannot be the judge in their own case; it’s not possible. How objective can they be?” “We cannot say there will be any objective outcome that is expected… the commission is on record in a public conference having said they had given a clean bill of health to the recruitment except for a few centres.” NPSC chairman Johnstone Kavuludi had also told news reporters the Commission was not involved in the recruitment and had instead delegated the duty to
local police commanders. But Njeru warned that failure to repeat the recruitment could create a major problem for the country. “It’s a small price to pay for us to repeat this process in the interest of the country. We cannot afford short term solutions to otherwise huge issues that need to be strategically dealt with in the interest of the national security,” he said. 200,000 Kenyans in US illegally could be saved from deportation Of the 400,000 Kenyans living in US, about 200,000 do not have proper papers, former envoy Elkanah Odembo recently said. But the threat on their stay could soon be eliminated. White House officials are making plans to grant work permits to millions of immigrants who are in the country illegally. This will allow them to stay without the threat of deportation, advocates and lawmakers in touch with the administration said. Such a large-scale move could trigger election-year politics with some leading conservative Republicans willing to launch impeachment proceedings against President Obama, a prospect White House officials have openly discussed. Yet there are no signs that the urgent humanitarian situation in South Texas where unaccompanied minors have been showing up by the tens of thousands from Central America, has impeded Obama from making
plans to address portions of the 11.5 million immigrants in the country illegally. Obama announced late last month that congressional efforts to remake the nation’s dysfunctional immigration system were dead and he would proceed on his own authority to fix the system where he could. Since then, he has asked Congress for $3.7 billion (Sh324 billion) to deal with the crisis of unaccompanied youth, a request that has gone unheeded even as the House and Senate scramble for a vote on a solution to the crisis this week before breaking for the annual August recess. Meanwhile, White House officials led by Domestic Policy Council Director Cecilia Munoz and White House Counsel Neil Eggleston, along with Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson have been working on a plan on executive actions Obama could take.

Private sector included in 10,000 km extra roads plan The Government has embarked on a plan that will ensure the construction of 10,000 kilometres of roads in the next five years. Infrastructure Principal Secretary John Mosonik said funds for the project will be sourced from the private sector in a new annuity model that does not rely on State funding.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was earlier today due to officially commission the plan that will allow faster completion of projects. “Sh3 billion has been set aside to kick off the first phase which will include the construction of 2, 000 km,” Mosonik told a media briefing on Tuesday.

The first phase will comprise 2,000 kilometres and is expected to start by December this year. It is set for completion during the 2015/16 financial year. Demand for modern and durable has exceeded supply and the government is keen on narrowing the gap in efforts to stimulate produc-
tive sectors of the economy. It is estimated that Kenya has a total of 161,000 kilometres of road network, but only 14,000 or 8.7 per cent, is paved. Urban areas will be the major beneficiaries of the project as only 20 per cent of roads will be in rural zones. Contractors will be expected to

Cops shoots reveller dead in Ruai bar
Kenyans would change their dressing style if they had money
A police officer has been arrested after he shot dead a reveller following an argument in a bar in Ruai, Nairobi last night. Police and witnesses said the officer went for his gun and shot the victim at close range. The wounded man was rushed to hospital where he died. Police say they are investigating the incident before taking the officer to court.
Majority of Kenyans would change the way they dress as soon as they got their hands on a large sum of money. Despite being comfortable in their clothes, Kenyans are likely to change certain aspects of their wardrobe if they had the luxury to do so. According to a Swiss company, International Certification Association (ICERITIAS), Kenyans would change their dress code in a heartbeat if their bank accounts were to suddenly overflow with cash. A recent study by the group has revealed that Kenyans who do not use accessories would get a Rolex watch if they had the money. Those comfortable in casual shoes would sooner sport a pair of orig-

Researchers inch closer to getting a cure for HIV
Researchers have recorded success in their first ever attempt to eliminate HIV virus from the human cells making good promise to finding a permanent cure for the disease. HIV-1, the most common type of the virus that causes AIDS, has proved to be tenacious, often inserting its genome permanently into its victims’ DNA and forcing patients to take a lifelong drug regimen to control the virus and prevent a fresh attack. But that could be over now after a team of researchers at Temple University School of Medicine designed a way to snip out the integrated HIV-1 genes for good. “This is one important step on the path toward a permanent cure for AIDS,” says Prof Kamel Khalili who chairs the Department of Neuroscience at Temple. Khalili and his colleague, Prof Wenhui Hu led the work which marks the first successful attempt to

eliminate latent HIV-1 virus from human cells. “It’s an exciting discovery, but it’s not yet ready to go into the clinic. It’s a proof of concept that we’re moving in the right direction,” added Prof Khalili, who is also Director of the Center for Neurovirology and Director of the Comprehen-
sive NeuroAIDS Center at Temple. In a study published July 21 by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Khalili and colleagues detail how they created molecular tools to delete the HIV-1 proviral DNA. When deployed, a combination of a DNA-snipping
enzyme called a nuclease and a targeting strand of RNA called a guide RNA (gRNA) hunt down the viral genome and excise the HIV-1 DNA. From there, the cell’s gene repair machinery takes over, soldering the loose ends of the genome back together -resulting in virus-free cells.
“Since HIV-1 is never cleared by the immune system, removal of the virus is required in order to cure the disease,” says Khalili, whose research focuses on the neuropathogenesis of viral infections. The same technique could theoretically be used against a variety of viruses, he says.

Equity Bank posted a 21 per cent rise in pretax profit to Sh10.82 billion for the first half of 2014, a rise that was driven by growth in its loan book. The bank’s Chief Executive Officer James Mwangi said that its loans portfolio grew 24 per cent to
Sh186.5 billion, while net interest income rose 6 per cent to 14.02 billion shillings. “When you look at the loan book, it is very exciting,” Mwangi said. Equity, which also has operations in Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and South Sudan, said its assets grew
to Sh302.92 billion from Sh261.58 billion in the first six months of 2013. The bank said its mobile banking business had also grown during the first half of the year, from Sh2.78 million customers at the end of 2013 to Sh3.04 million customers.

JKUAT, US firm to establish fish farming research centre The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has entered into a partnership with the Kiambu county government and a US private firm for the setting up of an Aquaponics Research Centre. The deal was signed on Monday and will lead to the setting up of the first ever such centre that is epected to revolutionise fish farming. JKUAT and Agrarian Group (Agrecco International) will establish an aquaponics project at the institution’s main campus in Juja. The facility will comprise an aquaculture production facility and a research and development programme. The centre is expected to support improvements in aquaponics systems and innovative technologies that will boost fish production. “Kiambu is endowed with high aquaculture potential owing to its multiplicity of climatic zones, making it possible to practice both cold and warm water fisheries,” Kiambu Deputy Governor Gerald Githinji said during the deal’s signing ceremony. JKUAT was represented by Vice Chancellor
JKUAT DVC Prof Kanangi, VC Prof Imbuga, Kiambu Deputy Governor Githinji and Mr Jason after signing the deal.
Prof Mabel Imbuga, while Aggreco International co-president, Mr Jason Schwartz, represented the firm. Githinji said “there are more than 2500 fish farmers operating about 3,000 ponds which cover an area of 825,000 square metres. The average annual production of fish stands at 40,000 kg with an estimated value of Sh12 million.” He said JKUAT will be instrumental in assisting the county government address challenges of youth unemployment owing to the university’s leadership role in entrepreneurial training, research and cottage industries.

Sierra Leone doctor dies in fight against Ebola A doctor who contracted Ebola on duty in Sierra Leone has died of the disease, Doctors Without Borders announced on Tuesday. Dr. Sheik Humarr Khan fell ill early last week while overseeing Ebola treatment at Kenema Government Hospital, about 185 miles east of Sierra Leone’s capital , Freetown. He was treated by the French aid group, Medecins Sans Frontieres -also known as Doctors Without
Borders -- in Kailahun, Sierra Leone, up until his death, spokesman Tim Shenk said. “Dr. Khan was an extremely determined and courageous doctor who cared deeply for his patients,” Doctors Without Borders said in a statement. “His work and dedication have been greatly appreciated by the medical community in Sierra Leone for many years. He will be remembered and missed by many, especially by
the doctors and nurses that worked with him. MSF’s sincere thoughts and condolences are with Dr. Khan’s family, friends and colleagues.” A University of Sierra Leone graduate, Khan worked for that African country’s Ministry of Health and Sanitation, including as head of the Lassa fever program at Kenema Government Hospital, according to the Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Consortium. While in that
latter post, Khan contracted the disease. He had worked with the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone, consulted with the World Health Organization/ Tulane University on its Mano River Union Lassa fever network and was physician-incharge of his hospital’s HIV/ AIDS program. Khan continued his training in Ghana from 2010 to 2013, before returning to head the Kenema Government
Hospital’s Lassa fever program and becoming a lecturer at the University of Sierra Leone. The Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Consortium described him as “one of the world’s leading experts in the clinical care of viral hemorrhagic fevers” -among them, Ebola. This disease typically kills 90 per cent of those infected, but the mortality in this outbreak has dropped to 60 per cent because of early treatment.

African airline ASKY has announced suspending all flights to and from Freetown, Sierra Leone, and Monrovia, Liberia after one of its passengers collapsed and died in what
is suspected to be an Ebola attack. Patrick Sawyer, (inset) a 40-year-old consultant with the Liberian Ministry of Finance, was en route to a conference when he

A 5-minute run a day is good enough, study says You don’t need to clock record speeds or run marathons to stay healthy. A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology finds that running as little as five minutes a day will do. It gives you the same benefits of running or walking for longer. The key is to sustain the practice. Running may in fact be a better exercise option than more moderate-intensity exercises for healthy but sedentary people since it produces similar, if not greater, mortality benefits in five to 10 minutes compared to 15 to 20 minutes per day of moderate-intensity activity. Lead author, Dr D C Lee, from Iowa State University, advised physicians to offer a simple exercise prescription to patients: “15 min of brisk walking or 5 min of running is all it takes for most clinic patients. Exercise is a miracle drug in many ways.” The research followed more than 55,137 adults between the ages of 18 and 100 over a period of 15 years, recording their daily activity, including running. Compared with non-runners, the runners had a 30 per cent lower risk of death from all causes and a 45 per cent lower risk of death from heart disease or stroke. The benefits were the same irrespective of the distance, frequency or speed, sex, age, body mass index, health conditions, smoking status or alcohol use. Participants who ran less than 51 minutes, fewer than 10km, slower than 10km per hour, or only one to two times per week had a lower risk of dying compared to those who did not run. Those who ran less than an hour per week had the same mortality benefits compared to those who ran more than three hours per week.

Nakumatt to open 3 new outlets in expansion plan
Regional retail giant, Nakumatt Holdings will open three new outlets in Kenya by the end of the year, managing director Atul Shah, has said. The retailer recently opened three other new branches in Tanzania, formerly owned by Shoprite, a South African retailer. By opening the three Tanzania branches in succession, Nakumatt has boosted its branch network to 50, a milestone that was part of its ‘Nakumatt 2.0’ corporate development strategy announced in 2011. The plan involves opening branches across the counties, giving Kenyans countrywide access to consumer goods. “We currently have running operations in 12 counties and we are engaging with a number of property develop-

Jamii Bora’s personal unsecured loans As it has become increasingly difficult for many people to get unsecured loans from their banks, Jamii Bora Bank has come up with a service that aims to solve that problem. Dubbed the Jamii Bora Personal Unsecured Loan, it is a product for people who channel their salaries through their accounts but are not registered under any check off system. The service applies to those who want to purchase personal items like furniture or fund projects like building a house or tending to a farm. Unlike some loans, which are defined by a complicated lending system, Jamii Bora’s service gives a borrower up to 10 times their net income with a maximum loan amount of Sh3 million. “There is a repayment period of up to 3 years,” says one of their agents. The loan is fully secured by the borrower’s salary, meaning that it only applies to those who are on a company’s payroll.

Simple sheets of plastic are saving farmers in Kinangop thousands of shillings that would have been spent on fighting pests. These plastic sheets have proved to be a cheap alternative to fighting potato weevils saving farmers nearly Sh15, 000 spent on pesticides for every hectare of potatoes they grow. “Erecting a simple plastic barrier just 30 to 50cm high and 10cm into the ground is very effective in stopping weevil migration to potato fields,” Derrick Kigwe, a scientist working with the farmers, says. “It’s an idea that has been tested collaboratively with local farmers to assess its impact, ease of use and acceptability.” More than 60 individual field experiments have been carried out with farmers in Kinangop to determine the efficiency of the plastic barriers. Hepatitis, the silent killer Hepatitis is a global silent killer. This viral infection that damages the liver manifests itself in Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E and can lead to liver cancer or cirrhosis. It has not only been neglected for long, but is also an infection that many people are living with unknowingly. This because in more than 80 per cent of the cases, symptoms do not appear. The Ministry of Health has warned that the rising cases of hepatitis are worrying more than HIV. Actually,
many of these cases are discovered when one goes for blood donation or check up for other ailment. Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) has termed the disease a health crisis that needs urgent address. Being the commonest, Hepatitis B affects more than 240 million globally while claiming 780, 000 yearly. The virus is infectious and is transmitted through body fluids. Hygiene and protection during sex and when handling patients.
It can also be transmitted from mother to child during birth. Common symptoms include yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), dark urine, extreme fatigue, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Hepatitis A has no cure, but its clears itself with time. Hepatitis C is rarely associated with life threatening ailments. About 15 to 45 per cent of infected persons spontaneously clear the virus within six months of infection without any
treatment. About 150 million have chronic Hepatitis C infection. With no specific statistics on Hepatitis E, WHO says 20 per cent of this infection can lead to a mortality rate of 20 per cent in pregnant women. The Hepatitis E virus is transmitted mainly through contaminated drinking water. It is usually a self-limiting infection taking about four to six weeks. WHO says globally, there are
about20 million cases of Hepatitis E infections every year. Hepatitis D can be chronic. Transmitted through mucosal contact and it has no vaccine. Hepatitis E is mild and can affect those with prior liver condition, are pregnant or have suppressed immune system. July 28 is the WHO hepatitis day men to increase awareness about this disease. Kenyans were treated and screened on Monday and vaccinated free, courtesy of the Ministry of Health.

Neurone signal transfer faster than Bolt A neurone is a specialized cell that transmits nerve impulses or messages to other cells. It is also called a nerve cell. The many cells give the brain another name, the nervous system. The Art District Chiropractic, a US health care centre says message transfer to and from the brain is very fast because of the massive neurones. The speed is estimated to be 290mm per hour.
Usain Bolt covers 100 metres in 9.58 seconds, but a message is conveyed at a speed of 80.6m per second. Almost nine times faster than the fastest man on earth. This means if you step on a hot object, the message will move to the brain and back to the leg for you to withdraw it at a speed of 290Km per hour! The centre says the human body consists of about 100 billion
neurones, which is put on a straight line they can form a line of 966 kilometres. On average, men have higher weight of the brain than women. The brain of an adult man is about 1375 grams while that of an adult woman is about 1275 grams. However, this does not matter in intelligence. The centre says on average, as humans grow, they keep losing one gram of the brain each year.

The teen with 200 teeth! A few extra teeth growing in the mouth is not rare but more than 200 is a shocking phenomenon. A 17 year old boy from India underwent a successful six hour operation in July to remove 232 teeth. Ashik Gavai’s denti-

six because the denticles were lodged in the bone inside the lower right jaw. Had his mouth not swollen and caused him so much pain, the dental growth would not have been extracted in time.

Glazing homes gleams rebellious, dull paints
Glazing dull colours in homes re-energise dormant and otherwise rebelliously looking paints to a gleaming glare. Martin Kyalo describes glazing as a technique of painting that involves application of a thin oily transparent or translucent layer of paint over the top of an opaque one. The underlying colour must first dry for the best impressiona and easy application. Kyalo, a seasoned painter, says light travels through the glaze to strike the underlying, dull layer. The light reflects back, bringing the under paint
into sharp focus. Sometimes a thin darker layer of translucent may also be used to achieve special effects on furniture surfaces or walls of given rooms. Furniture in a dull-painted room, for instance, can be highlighted by donning them with glaze. The technique also comes handy when refurbishing homes. It can breathe life into old dying furniture such as kitchen cabinets, dining tables, wardrobes, among others. Urban explorers not deterred by the risks THRILL CHASERS: Urban explorers crawl through tunnels, abandoned buildings and sewage networks, as a fun activity.
The intrigue of abandoned buildings, tunnels, sewage drains and even decay arouse curiosity in some people, and leads to what has come to known as urban exploration. The idea is to explore the recesses of hidden and forgotten places in the built environments— everything from under-city catacombs, sewers and transit tunnels to above-ground relics like

abandoned buildings. The explorers tour frightening places for the adrenaline surge, even infiltrating prohibited places. Many of them are photographers and videographers with a sharp eye for the surreal beauty of decayed and dying spaces. Another aspect of urban exploration is the touring of in-use buildings which includes gaining access to secured or member-
only areas like machine rooms, roofs, elevator rooms, and other normally unseen parts of working buildings. It is a risky activity at best and an illegal one at worst because entering those restricted areas is committing trespass and civil prosecution and arrest may result. There is also the danger that comes with old buildings and tunnels. Many old abandoned buildings
are not maintained and are unsafe floors and broken glass that may fall on them as they explore. Many of them may contain unknown chemicals, harmful gases, stray voltage, and asbestos, a long term health risk for urban explorers. Explorers also risk breathing in contaminants from dried bird faeces, which can cause a condition known as pigeon lung.
Old habits die hard, however deadly and dangerous they are, and, so it seems, does jousting. We all thought that jousting had died a death along with knights, medieval banquets and fair maidens, but it seems that jousting still goes on today. This is not a game for the fainthearted. It is a game of massive fun, but danger accompany it on equal measure even for the experts. If you’re not entirely sure what jousting involves, basically you have two competitors on horseback and each competitor is covered from head to toe in thick, heavy armor. Once ready, both competitors charge at one another on their horses whilst carrying an 11-foot long lance. The competitors can reach speeds of up to 30 mph. The aim of the game is to try and knock their opponent off of their horse with their lance, with brutality of war, of course. If you don’t break only your neck, your limbs might as well be cracked beyond repair. On occasions of bad landing and hard smacking, death is the only result, even though this is a rare occurrence. There has been a recent resurgence of interest in jousting and events are being held throughout the world, from California to New Zealand that have organized tournaments.

Origi finally signs for Liverpool Liverpool announced on Tuesday the signing of 19-year-old Belgium striker Divock Origi from Lille, but said they will loan him back to the French side for the 2014-15 campaign. “I am very happy and delighted a club as big as Liverpool showed interest in me. I’m very excited,” Origi told the Liverpool website. “I know it’s a club with a great history, great fans and a lot of great players. For me, Liverpool is one of the greatest clubs in the world and I’m very excited to be part of this great history.” Origi travelled to the United States, where Liverpool are on a pre-season tour, in order to complete the deal. Liverpool did not disclose the length of his contract. After a breakthrough campaign with Lille in 2013-14, Origi impressed for Belgium at the World Cup, scoring an 88th-min-
ute winner against Russia in the group phase to send his team into the last 16. Origi is Liverpool’s fifth close-season signing, following the arrivals of the former Southampton trio of Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, and Dejan Lovren, and German midfielder Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen. While the teenager will have to wait at least a year before making his Liverpool debut, he is excited by the prospects of becoming a part of manager Brendan Rodgers’s side. “The fact we have a young team and can grow is the most exciting part,” he said. “With the coach we have, he’s a great manager who can handle a young team. He’s said a lot of good things about Liverpool and told me it’s the perfect club for me.

Mercedes Hungary Grand Prix rules shock Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton said he was shocked to be asked by his Mercedes team to move over and allow teammate and title rival Nico Rosberg to pass him during Sunday’s tumultuous Hungarian Grand Prix. The incident, one of at least two in which Mercedes tried to persuade Hamilton to help Rosberg, came after 47 laps of a 70-lap race won by Australian Daniel Ricciardo for Red Bull. The two Mercedes drivers, who finished third and fourth, were on different strategies. Rosberg, on a three-stop plan, was using faster soft tyres at the time and had a further pit stop to make. “Obviously I am aware that I was in the same race as him, just because he had one more stop than me doesn’t mean I am not in same race,” said Hamilton. “If I let him pass, he could pull away and come back at me later. “I was very, very shocked that the team would ask me to do that. He didn’t get close enough to overtake, I was not going to lift off and lose ground to Fernando (Alonso) or Daniel (Ricciardo), so it was a bit strange.” Hamilton had started from the pit lane and, after brushing the barriers at Turn Two of the opening lap made full use of his pure pace and two Safety Car interventions on a drying track to fight his way through the field. The Briton finished third behind two-time champion Spaniard Alonso of Ferrari. Rosberg came fourth.
Rudisha ready for semis later today
World 800 metres record holder David Rudisha started his Commonwealth Games campaign with a comfortable first round win at Hampden Park on Tuesday. The Olympic champion, who won the 800 at the Glasgow Diamond League meeting earlier this month, qualified fastest for today’s semi-finals in one minute 46.89 seconds. He took no chances in his qualifying heat and controlled the field before crossing the line in 1:46.89 the morning’s fastest time. The timing was a contrast to Nijel Amos, the runner-up at the London games who took it ‘really easy’ to sail through second in 1:50.56 from the fourth race. Rudisha went past the 400mmark in 52.23 seconds.
Amos stopped at the line to let Bermuda’s Aaron Evans step home first at 1:50.88, while Kenya’s Evans Kipkorir earned the last automatic qualifying spot in 1:50.88. “I wanted to control the race so that I can preserve the energy for the semi-finals tomorrow and the finals. I began preparing for my season late so am happy and pleased to be here already having run 1:42 which is not so easy,” said Rudisha whose first race was in May. “I know I will struggle a bit this season but then the focus for me is next year - the world championships. So it’s good to test and see how my body is able to respond and get myself on top form,” said the world champion.

‘I am happy with the win but more with the support of Chebet and Florence’

CLEAN SWEEP: (L-R) Florence Klplagat, Joyce Chepkirui and Emily Chebet on the podium after winning all medals in the 10,000m women’s race in Glasgow on Tuesday.
Chepkirui leads Kenyan 10,000m sweep in Glasgow
There was a Kenyan clean sweep in a thrilling 10,000m on the third day of athletics action at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Tuesday. Joyce Chepkirui sprinted past Florence Kiplagat on the homestretch as Emily Chebet rounded up the country’s first
ever sweep in the women’s 10 000m with a bronze. Chepkirui, the youngest of the trio at 26, raced to her personal best and her first major global title in 32:09.35, while 27 year-old Kiplagat stumbled home to silver in 32.09.48. Chebet, 28 crossed the line in a personal best of
32.10.82. “The plan was simple: stick together from the start and break off with about 8 minutes remaining,” said Chebet. “I am happy with the win but more with the support of Chebet and Florence. We had planned it exactly this way,” the new Games cham-
pion added on the race the Kenyans controlled from the second lap. “I feel great,” Kiplagat said the world marathon record holder who sometimes trains with Chepkirui in Iten. “But we didn’t go for our lap of honor, that’s the only down part,” she added unaware that
they had lapped some of the runners twice and they were still on the track racing five minutes after their finish. In about two weeks the trio will be looking to repeat the feat in Marrakech at the African event where they will have a sterner test from their perennial rivals, Ethiopia.
Oliech recalled for Lesotho clash Forward Dennis Oliech has been recalled to the national team ahead of Sunday’s decisive African Cup of Nations qualifier against Lesotho. Oliech’s international future appeared to be over after falling out with Coach Adel Amrouche last year, the coach has since been handed 1-year ban for dissent. Football Kenya Federation (FKF) have confirmed the striker has been recalled for the return leg fixture to be played at the Nyayo Stadium. Kenya must beat Lesotho by two goals without conceding to advance to Group stage of the competition. Lesotho won first leg 1-0 in Maseru. “We are doing everything possible to secure the release of three players – Ayub Timbe, who turns out for Belgian side FC Genk, goalkeeper Arnold Origi (Lillestrom, Norway) and striker Dennis Oliech,”said FKF Chief Executive Officer Michael Esakwa. “We are communicating with club officials, with the support of CAF, who are doing the same. This is a crucial match, which we must win to advance in the qualifiers.” The winner will advance to the group stage, where they will join Gabon, Burkina Faso and Angola in Group C.The top two teams in each group qualifies for 2015 finals.
Former jnr champion Chepng’etich graduates in style with 1,500m gold Faith Chepng’etich yesterday won the 1,500m gold at the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday. The 20-year-old former world junior champion over the four laps sped home in 4:08.94 to win her first championship title barely a year after graduating to the senior ranks. It was, however, a bad ending to world indoor champion Hellen Obiri whose bursting form painfully bungled her medal chances. Obiri, Chepng’etich, and youth champion and Selah Busienei stuck together with Busienei leading the field through the 400m in 1:10.94 and the 800 mark in 2:8.95 before England’s Laura Weightman, an Olympic finalist, raced ahead fixed on spoiling the calculated Kenyan
sweep as they approached the bell. Kipyegon and Obiri shrugged off the Weightman’s charge, regaining the lead with about 300m to go and the Englishwoman hot on their heels. Obiri who, just 24 hours earlier had obliterated the games record to 4:04.43, ran out of steam as Weightman went past her with 50m to go, a surge that jerked Kipyegon to a championships win. “I couldn’t have done this without my teammates. We planned to pace together and it did until after the bell when we realized Weightman was right there with us when I sped off. I am very happy with my progression as a senior. We’ll work together at the African championships,” said the 20 year old.

Wenger admits Chambers signing is worthy gamble Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that signing teenager Calum Chambers for a reported fee of Sh2.3billion is a risk he is prepared to take. The Gunners announced the 19-year-old’s transfer from Southampton on Monday, with the defender believed to have undergone a medical and agreed personal terms.
The fee commanded by the England Under-21 international has raised eyebrows, but Wenger believes Chambers’ potential justifies it. “He can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield. I hope he will give us competition for the players in these three positions,” Wenger has been quoted as saying. “He hasn’t played many
games, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and at the end of the day, I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future.” Chambers is expected to play back-up to new signing Mathieu Debuchy at right-back, leaving Carl Jenkinson’s future at the club in doubt.

Tevez’s father freed after kidnap ordeal The father of Argentine football star Carlos Tevez was kidnapped early Tuesday before being released hours later, a lawyer for the family said. Segundo Tevez “is free, he is in good condition and has reunited with his family,” lawyer Gustavo Galasso said. There was no immediate confirmation of press reports that the family paid a ransom to secure Segundo’s release. Juventus star Tevez had planned to fly home from Italy in response to the situation but “decided not to in light of the good news,” said the governor of Buenos Aires province Daniel Scioli. The victim was kidnapped early Tuesday morning while driving in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, Scioli said. Scioli said the kidnapping began as a car-jacking. But when the assailants realised who Tevez was after checking the car’s papers, they “recaptured him as he was walking
away, put him in another car, and began calling the family to extort them.” The car was found abandoned
several hours later, according to media reports. Argentine federal police received a 911 call from the
footballer’s sister-in-law, the reports said. The football player was a child when his biological father died.

Four Ethiopian track stars vanish into thin air during Oregon youth championships Four members of an Ethiopian track team are reportedly missing in what officials are terming as a bid to remain in the country. The athletes travelled to the University of Oregon last week to compete in the International Association of Athletics Federations World Junior Championships. They are alleged to have hatched a plot to seek asylum in US. Washington has recently been forced to enforce stringent laws to curb an influx of asylum seekers. The four athletes, comprising a 17-yearold teenager and three
women aged between 18 and 20, were reported missing on Saturday. The Oregon University police spokesman Kelly McIver couldn’t confirm if the quartet was seeking asylum but said they were not ruling out anything. It is not the first time an athlete has pulled such a stunt. During the 2012 London Olympics, a 15-year-old boy who took part in the opening ceremony vanished in what authorities say was a bid to seek asylum in England. When an alert was raised, the boy was returned to Ethiopia.
