Devolution Secretary Anne Waiguru on Monday assured the US-Africa Leaders’ Summit of greater engagement between the Government and civil society.

She said the first ever forum between a Kenyan Head of State and NGO Council prior to President Kenyatta’s departure for the summit was proof of the commitment.

“In Rwanda for example, it takes as little as six hours to register a business yet it takes six months for civil society organisations to be registered,” he said.

Democracy key to growth, US tells African leaders The US-Africa Summit opened on Monday in Washington DC as African leaders were asked to respect political differences.

Addressing 35 presidents of African states, including Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta, nine prime ministers and three vice-presidents, US Vice President Joe Biden said core democratic principles are vital to achieving long-term growth.

He asked civil rights activists to fight corruption terming the menace a cancer in the continent.

“It’s a cancer in Africa as well as around the world.

It is an affront to the dignity of the people and a direct threat to each of your nations’ stability and in deed all nations’ stability,” Biden said.

Police warn of new robbery trick by thugs

Most people spend 27 per cent of lifetime obstructing others The average person spends more than a quarter of his or her lifetime directly in the way of other people. According to a study released last week by researchers at Rutgers University, whether a person is shopping at a supermarket, standing next to a shop, leaning against a wall or texting on their phone, 27 per cent of their lifetime is spent obstructing others.

“Our research revealed that throughout a normal lifespan, a person will spend a total of three years in the middle of a sidewalk hindering the movement of pedestrians, a full year blocking doorways, and more than six months holding up a dozen or more strangers while walking far too slowly down a flight of stairs,” said

World Bank to give Sh17b for Ebola fight The World Bank has announced it is allocating $200m (Sh17 billion) in emergency assistance for West African countries battling to contain the Ebola outbreak. The money will be distributed to the governments of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea as well as to the World Health Organization (WHO).

This comes as the death toll from the virus reached 887 according to WHO. The World Bank’s announcement came as African leaders, including 35 presidents discuss the crisis in Washington.

Guard hurt in Kawangware robbery A guard was last night hit and seriously wounded as he tried to stop a gang from stealing household goods in Kawangware.

The gang had broken into a house and were busy collecting electronic goods when the guard raised alarm. This prompted one the thugs to hit him in the head with a metal object before they escaped. The victim is currently admitted in hospital and no arrest has been made so far.

Kenya’s Cabinet Secretaries attending the US-Africa Leadership Summit today played leading roles in moderating discussions on how US companies can invest more and succeed in Africa.

Some of the areas where US companies could find the biggest opportunities in Kenya were outlined as energy and infrastructure sectors.

Government to build 60 technical institutes to provide youth training Sixty technical institutes will be constructed across the country in the current financial year. Deputy President William Ruto has said the technical institutes are aimed at promoting a knowledge-based economy to improve national

prosperity and global competitiveness.

Another 100 technical institutes will be established in the next financial year to meet the education needs of the youth. “The Government has already finalized plans to establish 60 technical

institutes this financial year. Another 100 technical institutes will be put up come the next financial year and another 100 technical institutes before the end of 2017, he said.

Ruto has added that establishing more technical

institutes will go a long way in ensuring quality, equity and reliability in the delivery of post-secondary education.

“We want to have manpower skills and competence to tap the talent of the young people to drive the economy,” said

Ruto. The Deputy President said the Government was improving infrastructure to lower the cost of doing business and create more job opportunities for the youth.

He added that the Government will involve the youth in promoting unity

and national cohesion across the country. Ruto said the Government has come up with a volunteer programme for the youth to engage in mentorship programs, saying this was aimed at uniting all the Kenyan different ethnic communities.

Teenager chops off uncle’s genitals in India rape case An Indian teenager took a knife to a so-called tantric who allegedly tried to rape her for a second time and cut off his penis.

The man, who is also the girl’s uncle, is currently being hunted by detectives who praised what they described as the young woman’s “courage”.

Police in the Madhepura district of Bihar said the young woman, believed to be aged either 17 or 18, had been raped last month by her uncle, who is known in the local area as a tantric and who performs rituals.

Hope truce will hold as Israel pulls out of Gaza Israel has announced the withdrawal of all of its troops to “defensive positions” outside the Gaza Strip.

The move came moments before the latest truce - brokered by Egyptian mediators late on Monday came into force at 08:00 local time (05:00 GMT).

Israel claims the main aim of the conflict - to destroy militants’ tunnels - has been achieved. Gaza officials say the four-week conflict has killed

1,800 Palestinians. Some 67 Israelis have also died.

“The Israel Defence Forces will be redeployed in defensive positions outside the Gaza Strip and we will maintain those defensive positions,” Israeli military spokesman, Lt-Col Peter Lerner said. Just minutes before the truce came into effect, air raid sirens sounded in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv as Hamas militants fired a barrage of rockets at central Israel. Israeli forces also staged

raids in Gaza shortly before the ceasefire began.

Israel launched Operation Protective Edge on 8 July with the stated aim of ending rocket attacks and destroying tunnels used by Palestinian militants.

In a statement just ahead of the withdrawal, the Israel Defence Forces said since then, it had taken out 32 tunnels designed to allow militants to carry out raids into Israel, destroyed 3,000 missiles and killed about 900 “terrorists”

There have been several truces called during the conflict but few have lasted, with each side accusing the other of violations.

Egypt negotiated a similar truce earlier in the conflict that was accepted by Israel but rejected by Hamas. The new agreement proposes that delegations from all sides should attend further talks in Cairo.

The main Palestinian demands remain on the table, notably a full Israeli troop withdrawal

from Gaza, the end of the blockade of the territory and the opening of border crossings.

Study says chilli pepper can help check gut tumors Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine report that dietary capsaicin -- the active ingredient in chili peppers -- produces chronic activation of a receptor on cells lining the intestines of mice, triggering a reaction that ultimately reduces the risk of colorectal tumors.

The receptor or ion channel, called TRPV1, was originally discovered in sensory neurons, where it acts as a sentinel for heat, acidity and spicy chemicals in the environment.

“These are all potentially harmful stimuli to cells,” said Eyal Raz, MD, professor of Medicine and senior author of the study. “Thus, TRPV1 was quickly described as a molecular ‘pain receptor.’

This can be considered to be its conventional function, which all takes place in the nervous system.”

But Raz and colleagues, in a report published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation, say they have found that TPRV1 is also expressed by epithelial cells of the intestines, where it is activated by epidermal growth factor receptor or EGFR. EGFR is an important driver of cell proliferation in the intestines, whose epithelial lining is replaced approximately every four to six days.

“A basic level of EGFR activity is required to maintain the normal cell turnover in the gut,” said Petrus de Jong, MD, first author of the study. “However, if EGFR signaling is left unrestrained, the risk of sporadic tumor development increases.” The scientists discovered that TRPV1, once activated by the EGFR, initiates a direct negative feedback on the EGFR, dampening the latter.”

NGO’s Sh1.2m to boost study on species The People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) has offered researchers and conservationists a chance to receive grants worth between £2,000 (Sh295,000) and £8,000 (Sh1.2 million).

A spokesperson for the Trust, Gamala Luitel, says individuals working for the preservation of endangered species either through research or practical field work, are invited to submit applications.

The grants come at a time when Kenya’s elephant and rhino population has fallen due to drought and attacks from poachers in the past few years. The Hirola antelope, one of the rarest animals known to man, has suffered a severe blow in recent years and conservationists have invested heavily into its conservation.

Since the 1970s, the mammal’s population has fallen by more than 90 per cent.

The Trust provides grants to researchers and conservationists worldwide.

“Applications can be made for projects of up to two years duration,” Luitel says. .

A continuation grant is a larger grant arrangement, offering £10,000 (Sh1.5 million) to £25,000 (Sh3.7 million) for projects between two to five years.

As a result, the Chandaria Foundation has donated Sh50 million for the construction of a Centre for Performing Arts on the fifth floor of the building.

“The industry is an area with a great potential for growth and can contribute immensely to the country’s economic development,” said Manu Chandaria as he presented the cheque to the university late last month.

Internet firm to upgrade network Zuku has announced a major network upgrade that will see the leading home internet service provider offer customers improved Internet speeds and reduced downtime.

The network upgrade will provide speeds of up to 50Mega bytes per second (Mbps) for its Nairobi customers. Zuku’s announcement comes at a time when there is a growing demand for quality internet services. Kenya’s internet subscribers have grown by 1.3 per cent since 2012 to stand at over 13 million users.

On the other hand, those accessing the internet on a regular basis stand at close to 20 million, almost half the country’s population.

Zuku’s network upgrade, valued at Sh220 million, is expected to be complete by the end of October, In Mombasa, the upgrade took effect on August 1, 2014.

Released maize to Pyrethrum becomes popular again lower flour prices Following a maize shortage that has been experienced in the country for months now, the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) said it will release 500,000 bags of maize to millers, traders and individuals at Sh2,800 a bag.

Kenyans eat about four million bags of maize a month so this is barely 13 per cent of the country’s total consumption.

However, the new rate will be the lowest price for the product since the average wholesale price for a 90-kg bag of dry maize previously stood at Sh3,100.

“We are releasing maize to the market in order to bring down prices and make flour affordable to

consumers,” said NCPB spokesman, Evans Wasike in a statement late last month.

The maize is currently stored in NCPB facilities in Bondo, Moi’s Bridge, Kitale, Eldoret, Kipkaren and Narok.

“This is good news not only to millers, but also Kenyans as it is part of the strategy to lower the price of flour,” said Diamond Lalji, Millers Association Chairman.

NCPB experts say the offloading of the Board’s stock is expected to push down market prices that have seen a twokilogramme packet of maize flour sell for Sh118 from Sh110 two months ago.

The India Bank chief and 11 other officials have been arrested over bribery allegations.

Sudhir Kumar Jain, the chairman of the state-run bank, has been accused of taking bribes in exchange for loan extensions to private firms.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in India, said that they recovered 5m rupees (Sh7.2million) that

was allegedly paid to Mr Jain through middlemen by the firms in order to get extensions on their loans. They also recovered property papers and jewellery.

“We are determined to fight corruption at high levels,” Ranjit Sinha, director of the Central Bureau of Investigations said.

Artificial pancreas to regulate sugar levels With successful trials last month, scientists have come up with an artificial pancreas that will help monitor and regulate blood sugar for diabetes 1 patients.

This gadget seeks to free medics who have always kept closer eyes on these diabetes patients for insulin or glucagon injection.

People resort to insulin in-

jections when their pancreas cannot reduce their bodies’ blood sugar levels while glucagon increases blood sugar levels.

Diabetes 1 is a childhood condition where the body produces insufficient or no insulin to help monitor blood sugar. These patients must get injections of insulin.

The portable pancreas device works with smartphones and release the hormones at regular intervals and when required.

It consists of an iPhone 4S with attached glucose motoring equipment, two pumps and reservoirs for glucagon and insulin.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine,

a sensor is implanted under the skin at the abdomen of the patient.

It measures a person’s glucose levels before sending the results to the patient’s smartphone.

The smartphone software calculates the required insulin or glucagon and releases the dose at a five-minute interval.

Among the Oromo, there is no afterlife, no day of judgement

The Oromo people believed there is no punishment after death, unlike the teachings in the Christian and Islamic faiths. Anybody who breaks God’s commandment is liable for punishment when they are still alive, the community believes. Gadaa.com, an Oromo cultural site, says anybody who goes against God’s law, Waaqayoo, is punished on earth before they die. Oromo believe when one passes on,

they continue living in form of a spirit called Ekeraa. Ekeraa lives among their people.

Ekeraa guards the living against evil and protecting the living made the ekeraa to hang around their former homes. But the living too had an obligation to please the departed by offering animal sacrifices, especially to one’s parents.

The sacrifices were offered in place where a person is

buried. The Oromo traditional religion had semblance to Islam; they paid pilgrimage to holy places known as Qaallus and other designated religious centres. One of the common ones was the Arsi Abbaa Muuda, which loosely translates to ‘the father of atonement’. Pilgrims, also known as Jiia in Oromo, carried myrrh in one hand and a walking stick on their way to the holy shrine. The community

worshipped under trees, large bodies of water, by mountains, hills, stones, and other places they considered sacred.

During worship, believers beat drums and danced while singing. At the height of the religious ceremony Ayyaana, the spirit of the departed, speaks through Qaallu’s mouth. Qaallu was a title for a religious leader and a holy place. Qaalu could predict the future at this point.

Beans, tomatoes, potatoes or cauliflower can also be added to the ingredients. Other spices like cinnamon or one’s favourite food additive can be used to add colour and to give it a delicious taste.

The ingredients (carrots, onions, and garlic) are chopped and cleaned. The amount of rice to be used will depend on how many people the food

is being cooked for.

Heat the cooking oil in a pan, add the onions, sauté until golden brown and then add the carrots, peas, and ginger and mix well. Add a little water to allow them to cook without burning.

Once they have cooked until tender, add the amount of water required to cook the rice, one can choose to add lemon juice. The lemon juice acts a preservative if the dish needs to be stored.

Clean the rice and once the water boils, add the rice and while it boils add the coriander and mix well to ensure the flavours combine to bring out a delicious taste. Stir repeatedly.

When the water evaporates, reduce the heat, cover it with a lid and let it simmer for about ten minutes.

Serve the vegetable rice hot. It can be eaten on its own or any type of curry or stew.

Wambui elated by power lifting medal Joyce Wambui won Kenya’s first ever para powerlifting medal at the Commonwealth Games, a bronze, in the women’s heavyweight at the Clyde Auditorium on Saturday.

Wambui’s total of 68.6 points was way below the winning score of 112.4 in the more than 61kg category. The points were enough to earn her a medal that has eluded Kenyan Para-lifters in previous three attempts at the games.

Kenya’s other competitor in the category, Samson Okutto, had a strong start and was well positioned for a medal with his first lift of 160kg. He, however, scaled down to fifth in the men’s lightweight of up to 72kg.

“The competition was tough for me because there are many

stronger lifters who put pressure on me to perform well. I am glad it pushed me to do my best and win bronze,” said a delighted Wambui.

“I believe we can do better with more support and better facilities, it not all about track events,” she said.

Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri has hinted he could quit international football after revealing he has made a decision about his future with France.

The attacking midfielder was left out of France’s 2014 World Cup squad by coach Didier Deschamps and a return seems unlikely following his latest comments on his future.

“I’ve made the decision,” Nasri said.

“I took it a while ago but I’ll say it when the time is right.

It’s not something you can just announce on Twitter.

“I didn’t win anything with the national team so it’s easier to take this decision than if we’d just won something. When you play for a big club and you play lots of games, it’s easy to come to this decision.

“Yes, Maybe City will benefit.

Maybe during the international breaks I can stay and work a little bit more. All the players who played the World Cup and have lots of games during the season with their national teams can get tired and pick up injuries, that kind of stuff.

So I think I will be fresh.”

Nasri claimed criticism from

Deschamps and the French media does not faze him but wants to protect his family.

“It doesn’t affect me but it affects my family. They live in France, they read the press and stuff like that,” he said.

“I live in England. I’m fine with everything they said and I’m used to it. But for my parents it’s really hard. I want to make them happy and the national team doesn’t make me happy,” he said.

Following the failure by Harambee Stars to qualify to group stages of 2015 Africa Cup of Nations cup, a petition has been lodged in the World’s largest social change platform, change.org, to kick out Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

Football enthusiast Michael Omondi filed the petition, which was copied to President Uhuru Kenyatta calling for the Sam Nyamweya-led office to be disbanded to rescue the sport.

The petition reads: Football is a national sport and is considered to be one of the most exciting sports to watch and is followed by many. It excites emotions in people, brings many both friend and foe together and when people are in the stadium, they forget their problems. The governing body of football in Kenya is FKF. If managed properly, it is a source of income to many youths and is a source of pride to a country.

The current state of football in the country is wanting and has been

deteriorating over the years. Today, we hit the lowest moment and there seems to be no end in sight to our problems. FKF has fired the entire technical team but they are the main problem and need to go.

The letter accused FKF of failure to set up youth structures to feed the national team and lack of policies on players reporting to camp. The letter says players report to camp a day before the match and playing full 90 minutes.

“There cannot be any meaningful change to be done with the current office in place as they are the stumbling block,” the letter reads.

The fan accuses FKF of lacking a coach development programme and being steeped in endless internal wrangles as the chairman suspend everyone who challenges him.

“It is with these reasons that I am requesting my fellow soccer fans to support this cause and I believe Mr President will heed our call and save Kenyan soccer from this madness.”

Ofwoko returns to City stars Kenyan Premier League side Nairobi City Stars have confirmed Nigerian Robinson Ofwoko as head coach.

This follows the resignation of Briton Tim Bryett, who threw in the towel citing alleged interference in his work.

Bryett is believed to have tendered his resignation at the weekend, days after the club went down 2-0 to KCB. Nairobi City Stars chairman Peter Jabuya said he received the Briton’s resignation letter and accepted it.

“We have received his letter and appointed Ofwoko in an interim basis as head coach.

Regarding those claims of interference, I do not agree.

The truth is Bryett has not done well and probably was

feeling the pressure.”

Jabuya thanked the Briton for his service to the team he took over three months ago.

Ofwoko returned to City Stars one month ago after he had resigned as the club could not pay his salary.
