President Uhuru Kenyatta has asked the international community to help Kenya combat terrorism, saying the problem is a global challenge.

Speaking on CNN in Washington DC last night, Kenyatta said the international community is not doing enough to support Kenya in the war on terror.

Citing the case of September 11, he said the world rallied around the US but when similar attacks occur in Kenya, Western nations just issue travel advisories instead.

He said Kenya feels abandoned in the war and asked the international community to recognise that terror is not country-specific but a global problem.

“They don’t help in defeating the terrorists. If anything, they encourage and strengthen them,” Kenyatta said.

President Kenyatta said the Government is doing everything within “its limited resources” to combat the threat posed by terrorists.

“We are tremendously increasing our investment in the security sector because we recognise that security is key to ensuring long term investment,” he said.

The records, discovered by Hold Security, a firm in Milwaukee, include confidential material gathered from 420,000 websites, including household names, and small Internet sites.

Hold Security has a history of uncovering significant hacks, including the theft last year of tens of millions of records from Adobe Systems.

There are worries among some in the security community that keeping personal information out of the hands of thieves is increasingly becoming a losing battle. In December, 40 million credit card numbers and 70 million addresses, phone numbers and additional pieces of personal information were stolen from retail giant Target by hackers in Eastern Europe.

And in October, federal prosecutors said an identity theft service in Vietnam obtained up to 200 million personal records.

But the discovery by Hold Security dwarfs the incidents, and the size of

the latest revelations has prompted security experts to call for improved identity protection on the web.

“Companies relying on user names and passwords have to develop a sense of urgency about changing this,” said Avivah Litan, a security analyst at the research firm Gartner.

“Until they do, criminals will just keep stockpiling people’s credentials.”

Websites in Russia have also been hacked, and Holden says he saw no link between the hackers and the Russian government.

But selling more of the records on the black market would be lucrative.

While a credit card can be easily cancelled, personal credentials like an email address, social security number or password can be used for identity theft. Because people tend to use the same passwords for different sites, criminals test stolen credentials on websites where valuable information can be gleaned.

A suspected thug died after a bus he and other accomplices had hijacked last night was involved in an accident on Mombasa Road. Eight thugs, posing as passengers, took over the the Kitengela-bound bus at Bellevue and started robbing passengers.

The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has now moved to court seeking the nullification of last month’s police recruitment as the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) prepares to release its findings on a probe it ordered into the exercise.

IPOA chairman Macharia Njeru had already dismissed the probe saying the multi-agency team tasked with the investigations could not present an objective report since most of its members came from bodies that were involved in the exercise.

The authority asked the court to revoke the selection of some 10, 000 recruits and order a repeat because of the graft and other malpractices reported during the July 14 hiring which IPOA said left many people aggrieved. “It was marred by maleficent irregularities and was not in compliance with the constitution,” Mr Njeru argued in suit filed before High Court Judge, Justice Weldon Korir in Nairobi.

NPSC is scheduled to give its verdict on the matter tomorrow after analyzing the report of its probe team which was submitted earlier this week.

Many bodies including Parliament and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission have asked for the recruitment to be repeated.

African leaders demand more respect from West

There was little time for pleasantries on Tuesday night when five African presidents took to the stage at the US-Africa Business Forum in Washington DC. Right off the bat, Tanzania’s Jakaya Kikwete accused the US of historically not “taking Africa seriously,” a state of affairs he hoped the US-

Africa Summit would turn around.

Kikwete said it was time relations between US and Africa moved beyond that of ‘donor and recipient’ into one of economic partners.

“Imagine what would happen in terms of the growth rates across Africa if there was no shortage of power,” Rwanda’s

President Paul Kagame said.

South Africa’s Jacob Zuma concurred that the Summit could not have come at a more opportune time given African countries were more united under the African Union. He said the continent spoke with one voice, unlike in the past.

US teen accused of molesting Kenyan orphans denied bail

An Oklahoma teen accused of molesting orphans during a mission in Kenya will remain in custody after a judge suspended an earlier decision to release him on bond.

On Monday, an Oklahoma judge ruled that 19-year-

old Matthew Durham of Edmond could be released on $10,000 (about Sh 879,468 bond on the basis of his father’s agreement to act as custodian.

The teen was still in custody when prosecutors appealed and US District Judge,

David Russell on Tuesday ordered the teen to stay in custody while the federal court considers the appeal.

Durham has been accused of defiling up to 10 boys and girls aged 6 to 9 at the Upendo Children’s Home in Nairobi.

Taking aspirin every day can reduce chances of developing bowel or stomach cancers, a review of available evidence suggests.

But the scientists have cautioned that medical advice must be sought before using the drugs as aspirin can cause internal bleeding.

In a report published in the journal Annals of Oncology, scientists from Queen Mary University of London report that aspirin reduces the number of deaths from bowel, stomach and oesophageal cancer by between 30 to 40 per cent.

The experts studied 200 tests on the benefits and harm of taking aspirin.

There was also weaker and more variable evidence that the drug reduces deaths from breast, prostate and lung cancer. The study found out

that people should take the drug for at least five years to realise benefits.

Prof Jack Cuzick, who led the research, urged all healthy people aged 50 and above to consider taking a small dose (75mg) of the drug every day for a decade.

Their prediction is that if 1,000 individuals aged 60 years took the drug for 10 years, at least 16 fewer deaths could be recorded from cancer in a decade. Over the

same period, there could be one fewer death from heart attack but two extra deaths from bleeding.

“Whilst there are some serious side-effects that can’t be ignored, taking aspirin daily looks to be the most important thing we can do to reduce cancer after stopping smoking and reducing obesity, and will probably be much easier to implement,” Prof Cuzick, who has been taking aspirin for four years, said. Aspirin’s well known possible side-effects include bleeding in the stomach and brain. And researchers warned that anyone at high risk of bleeding, including people with blood disorders who take blood thinning medication, or are frequent smokers or drinkers, are more likely to suffer the sideeffects.

Death toll in China quake nears 600 with 9 missing The death toll from the earthquake that struck China’s southwestern Yunnan province on Sunday has risen to 589, with nine people still missing, the ministry of Civil Affairs announced early today.

Among the reported deaths, 504 were in the worst-hit Ludian County and 72 in Qiaojia County. In addition to the deaths, 2, 401 people were reported injured.

One of the rescued victims,

88-year-old Xiong Zhengfen, was found Tuesday after 50 hours buried under rubble in Babaocun village, near the quake’s epicentre. Doctors told local media that she was uninjured and her vital signs were normal. She was taken to the county hospital after being rescued. The 6.1-magnitude quake struck a mountainous area, destroying thousands of houses and triggering landslides.

Several roads have been blocked and there are concerns about barrier lakes being formed when the debris blocks rivers in the area. The quake’s epicentre was in Longtoushan Township in Ludian County, a region with steep hills and narrow roads. China has sent thousands of troops to the area to assist survivors and search debris for any trapped people.

South Sudan talks stall as rebels stay away The August 10 deadline put on South Sudan warring parties to agree on a transitional government and end the seven-month conflict in the world’s newest nation may not yield fruits after rebels failed to attend the second day of the peace talks yesterday.

Organisers of the talks said it was not clear why they had not shown up. On Monday, rebel negotiators had complained about the continued presence of Ugandan forces in South Sudan.

The talks are part of a long-running effort to finalise details on a transitional government. It is not clear whether they will continue.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (Igad), which is overseeing the talks has set a 10 August deadline to agree on a transitional government and implement a ceasefire.

The last round of talks between President Salva Kiir and rebel leader, Riek Machar stalled in June.

Conflict erupted in December after Mr Kiir accused Mr Machar - his former deputy - of plotting a coup.

Mr Machar denied the allegation, but then gathered a rebel army to fight the government. Speaking in Washington on Tuesday, US Secretary of State, John Kerry accused Mr Machar of being responsible for breaking previous ceasefires.

“He needs to understand the importance of living by the agreements,” Mr Kerry said.

More than 1.5 million have been displaced and the UN has warned that the country is on the verge of famine.

Igad has now urged the international community to pressurise the rebels to go back to the negotiation table. Earlier, chief mediator, Seyoum Mesfin had warned of punitive measures if these round of talks failed.

One of the biggest bothers for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is finding affordable venues for meetings. But hotels have stepped in by offering cheaper spaces for as low as Sh100 an hour.

Restaurants, churches and schools have created venues to meet the needs of small businesses, organisations and social groups.

Apart from business meetings, people meet to organise social events such as burials and weddings.

Most of the meeting points are in Nairobi’s Central Business District, which is seen as a popular and convenient meeting point.

Derick Olum, Chairperson of Skylink Designers, an organisation that brings together three small-scale

Clare Kemunto, who runs the centres says they host at least 40 meetings daily.

“Each space attracts different charges. Those holding larger meetings are supposed to book in advance,’’ she says.

The charges range between Sh150 and Sh250 per hour.

The Salvation Army building near Nairobi’s Bus Station hosts hundreds of similar meetings on a weekly basis.

The building is split to meet different sizes of groups for as low as Sh100 per hour.

In fashion, it is all about the latest trends but is certain is that fashion rules will always be broken.

Former European boxing champion Jamie Moore is recovering in hospital after he was shot at Marbella in Spain.

The Salford man was hit in the leg and hip as he left a party in the early hours of Sunday. He is under armed guard in hospital.

A gunman is thought to have fired five shots, hitting Moore twice as he returned to an apartment block in the Spanish resort.

The 35-year-old, who became a trainer after retiring from

the ring and who has also worked as a commentator for Sky Sports, has since undergone an operation.

He was working with Matthew Macklin at his Marbella-based gym ahead of an upcoming middleweight clash with Jorge Sebastian Heiland, Dublin, on August 30.

On Monday evening Macklin tweeted: “Just to let everyone know Jamie Moore is still in hospital but he’s ok. He was shot in his legs but doctors

have said there shouldn’t be any serious or permanent damage done.”

Moore, who also trains Hull lightweight Tommy Coyle, held European, British and Commonwealth titles during his career as a lightmiddleweight.

Macklin was halted by Moore back in 2006, but enlisted the services of his former foe after a defeat by WBA champion Gennady Golovkin last year.

No arrests have been made.

The 36-year-old midfielder has signed a two-year contract with MLS side New York City — one of Manchester City’s sister clubs.

But the US side do not enter the league until next March so Lampard will play for the Premier League champions until January.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger raised doubts at the weekend over whether Lampard’s loan — given the club he is contracted to — adheres to the FFP rules that bar clubs from spending more than they earn.
