Kenyatta woos US investors FRIday, august 8, 2014
From Page 1 But most of the country is trouble-free,” Kenyatta was quoted as saying in an interview with Reuters. He repeated the sentiments last night in a speech delivered at a Washington dinner which was hosted by a group representing US businesses operating in Africa. While acknowledging that inse-
curity poses “a grave challenge” to Kenya, he expressed confidence that the war on terror will be won. He said the tourism sector has suffered the heaviest shock from terrorist activities. Kenyatta left the country last Sunday to attend a three-day summit of US and African leaders in Washington. The meeting was also planned to woo foreign investors to Kenya.
He said the government is keen on making the country more business-friendly and will enhance resource extraction and technology sectors to attract investors. He cited the huge youth population of “highly trained and competitive people” who he hopes will give Kenya a major edge in attracting the investors and entrepreneurs. He said doubling the country’s
road network and expanding rail transport sector are some of the measures the Government has taken to open up more parts of the country for business. “The ambitious expansion and modernization of our transport, energy and ICT infrastructure is calculated to reduce costs of goods and services by a tremendous margin,” Kenyatta said. He said he was
hopeful the initiatives would make Kenya the most competitive investor destination in the region. He pledged to end corruption in government, saying the vice has over the years frustrated development due to the loss of huge amounts of national wealth. “I can guarantee you that impunity and corruption have become highrisk activities in Kenya,” he said.
Indian tycoon to wear Sh19m gold shirt for his 45th birthday An Indian textile magnate who made a fortune from his clothing empire is making sure the rest of the world knows about his success - by having a shirt made of pure gold. Although he left school without any academic paper, Pankaj Parakh created a multi-million textile business in India. And to celebrate his pending 45th birthday on Friday, he has commissioned the solid gold shirt that weighs more than four kilos. He said: “I wanted to wear something special when I say my thanks for my success at a thanksgiving visit to the Siddhivinayak Temple of the Hindu elephant god in Mumbai.” And after paying just £127,000 (Sh19million) for the gold and have it turned into a shirt, he thinks he struck a reasonable deal. Local media reported that the shirt has got him noticed as he marches along the streets of his home in Yeola, 260 km from the city of
Mumbai. He says he gets admiring looks from women and envious peeps from men. “I never go out with less than two to three kilos of gold jewellery. “I have always been fascinated with gold since I was five-yearsold and studying in school. And over the years that interest has become a real passion. So it was logical that I would want to make my 45th birthday a golden affair. “Even on my wedding 23 years ago, a lot of people said it was embarrassing that I was wearing more gold than my bride, but I just love the royal metal.” The shirt has seven solid gold buttons and is due to be officially modelled by the clothing magnate on Friday. But he tried it in advance after collecting it from the Shanti Jewellers at Parel in Mumbai where a team of around 20 craftsmen collectively spent 3,200 hours over the past two months to stitch it together.

World Bank pledges support for Kenya projects The World Bank recognises Kenya as a giant in Africa and cannot ignore her its financial activities. “The message we have for you is that you are not a small fish but a big one,” World Bank President Jim Yong Kim told a President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Kenyan delegation meeting at UN headquarters in Washington DC on Thursday. Kim said the Bank has been encouraged by the on-going eco-
nomic reforms in Kenya and they would be happy to support the country achieve its goals. He spoke during a meeting with the President at the bank’s headquarters in Washington, DC on Thursday. “We will continue to engage with you and help you accomplish your development goals. We will bring the best experience from around the world to support sectors like real estate,” said Kim.
Kenyatta said there was no doubt about Kenya’s economic strength and potential and all it needed was willing partners “Our ability to deliver our development goals as a country is not in doubt and we can achieve this objective much sooner if we work together,” he said. The President said increasing access to basic health care was one of the areas Kenya expects the bank’s
support. He said Kenya was willing to closely liaise with the bank to increase power generation, infrastructure development and fostering devolution. “Housing is a major headache for Kenyans. Mortgages are unaffordable for many and this is one area where the bank can provide support to enable Kenyans own houses,” he said.

Mexico is the freest nation in the world While America leads the world in claiming to be the freest nation on the globe, a recent survey has revealed that it is, in fact, Mexico that holds the top spot. The data comes from the 20102014 World Values Survey, which researchers are calling “the largest non-commercial, cross-national investigation of human beliefs and values ever executed.” “It dates back to 1981 and has included nearly 400,000 respondents from 100 countries, which house 90 per cent of the world’s population,” says Christina Sterbenz from the Business Insider. On a scale of 1-10, where 1
means “no choice at all” and 10 means “a great deal of choice”, respondents were asked to rate how much free choice and control they have over their lives. In this regard, Mexico takes the top spot with a core of 8.4. Trinidad and Columbia fight for the second spot with a score of 8.2 while Kuwait comes in third with a score of 8. Japan rounds out the bottom, with respondents reporting an average of 5.8. Russia comes in at a close second-to-last with 6. Most notably, 11 countries reported higher responses than that of the United States, which had a score of 7.7. While Kenya was not surveyed, Rwanda scored a 6.9.

Hamas rejects ceasefire extension, fires rockets The Palestinian militant organisation, Hamas has rejected any extension of the three-day ceasefire in Gaza, which expired early today. It said that Israel had failed to meet its demands. Key among them, the re-opening of Gaza’s Harbour to shipping. Two rockets fired from Gaza hit southern Israel three hours before the three-day ceasefire was due to expire, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said.
The IDF accused “terrorists” of violating the ceasefire although Hamas denied firing them. The rockets fell on open ground and caused no casualties, the Israeli army said early on Friday. A Hamas military wing spokesman earlier called on Palestinian negotiators holding indirect talks with Israeli negotiators in Cairo to refuse any ceasefire extension unless its long-term demands were
met. The spokesman said his organisation was ready for “a long war” Israeli officials said earlier that they were willing to extend the ceasefire before it expired at 05:00 GMT on Friday. But Hamas, which controls Gaza, says there was a big gap between the sides’ positions. Four weeks of fierce fighting between Israeli forces and militants in Gaza claimed more than 1,900 lives. officials, who brokered the 72-hour ceasefire that began on Tuesday, were working against the clock on Thursday to persuade both sides to agree a long-term deal. “Egypt’s aims are to stabilise and extend the truce with the agreement of both sides and to begin negotiations towards a permanent agreement to cease fire and ease border restrictions,” an Egyptian official told Reuters news
agency. On Wednesday, Israeli officials said they had expressed their readiness to “extend the truce under its current terms”. But the deputy political leader of Hamas, Moussa Abu Marzouk, said: “There is no agreement.” Hamas had been reiterating its calls for the lifting of the blockade of Gaza, the release of prisoners and the end of the Israeli offensive.

Previously, only those returning home from countries with right-hand drive vehicles could bring them in duty free. Time to scratch an itch!
An elephant in Pilanesburg National Park in South Africa used a small car apparently to scratch an itch while terrifying the passengers inside. The elephant rubbed against and sat on the roof and hood of the VW Polo, extensively denting the vehicle, smashing out all the windows, blowing out all four tires, and breaking the chassis, said Armand Grobler’s, a field
guide and lodge manager, in Pilanesburg National Park in South Africa. “We were unsure of what to do in the situation when the elephant made contact with the car, and when the car was being crushed, we feared for the lives of the driver and passenger, but our efforts were very limited as to what we could do,” Grobler told the Mirror. “The two passengers in the car, male and female,
both in late 20’s or early 30’s, were not harmed, only badly shaken up. They were both in shock but happy to be alive. “The car was not so lucky. From what we could see and hear, all the windows were smashed, the roof was badly dented and the entire top part of the car smashed. “All four tyres had been blown and the chassis broken.”

Safaricom, Virtual City app to boost local sales teams Safaricom Business has partnered with Virtual City, a mobility solutions developer, to launch an application that will enhance service efficiency for the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector. Dubbed M-Distributor, the system is available on android devices. It enables sales teams and businesses to keep track of sales deals, place orders and collect returns while in the field. It also enables mobile money payments through M-Pesa. “M-Distributor effectively cuts down on
time spent processing transactions by FMCG sales teams by 50 per cent. This will have impact on operations and costs incurred, while making it possible for organisations to meet client expectations faster and effectively,” says Sylvia Mulinge, General Manager of Safaricom Business department during the launch earlier in the week. Several companies, including PZ Cussons and Safaricom, Airtime Dealers, have used M-Distributor by integrating into supply chain systems and processes with successful results.
Virtual City’s Chief Executive Officer John Waibochi says: “Technology’s role in this day and age is to make our lives easier. A lot of opportunities however remain unexploited. Our role is to create a bridge between these two divides”. He added: “Kenya accounts for some of the highest rates in smart phone penetration. It is time that started looking at these phones not just as basic communication and entertainment devices, but also as business productivity tools.”

Russia outlaws US, Europe food imports Russia has banned fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, milk and dairy imports from US, European Union, Australia, Canada and Norway. “There is nothing good in sanctions and it wasn’t an easy decision to take but we had to do it,” Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev told a government meeting on Thursday. The ban takes effect from August 7 to last for one year, he said. History The decision follows orders signed by Presiden, Vladimir Putin banning or limiting food imports from countries that imposed sanctions on Moscow for supporting rebels in eastern Ukraine and Russia’s occupation of Crimea. Crimea is a major land
mass located just south of the Ukrainian mainland and west of the Russian region of Kuban. Last month, EU and US tightened sanctions on Russia, with Brussels (the unofficial capital of the European Union) applying restrictions to key sectors of the economy as well as Russian individuals. The first round of sanctions came after Russia occupied Ukraine’s Crimea region in March 2014. Putin said on Wednesday Russia would take retaliatory sanctions to last for a year. The order takes effect immediately. Implications Russia is Europe’s second-largest market for food and drinks and has been a key consumer of Polish pig meat and Dutch fruit and vegetables.

Tech devices better priority than sleep for British adults A study by a British firm shows that UK adults spend more time on technology devices than sleeping. Communications firm Ofcom says adults spend about eight hours and 41 minutes a day on media devices. This is against an average night’s sleep of eight hours and 21 minutes. The study sampled 2,800 respondents. TVs and radios still remain popular despite the growth of digital media. Almost four hours a day are spent watching TV whose almost 80 per cent of viewers do not use another device. This led to the conclusion that TV is still the most consumed media device although
The frequency of local sporting and entertainment events has led to a rising number of consumers indulging in social drinking. A research by global group, Euromonitor, reveals that Kenya is as a result growing into the third largest beer market in Africa. “This was further supported by the fact that the middle-class continues to grow every year, giving rise to more individuals with considerable amount of disposable income to spend on alcoholic drinks,” say the experts. The Kenyan market has also witnessed more women independently funding drinking sprees. They use alcohol as an ice breaker in business meetings. While some revellers spend as much as Sh20,000 in a single weekend, the average Kenyan drinker spends Sh629 a month on alcohol. When it comes to drinking anything outside the household setting, more expensive products, such as alcohol and soda, win the battle for market share. Milk is reserved for home consumption. Senior researcher Francis Karin and experts from Egerton University say alcohol is the most consumed beverage outside the home. It is primarily consumed by household heads.

KQ a telecom after signing Airtel deal
Bharti Airtel, a leading telecommunications services provider, has announced that it will host Kenya Airways as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, (MVNO) on its Kenyan Network. An MVNO is a cell phone carrier (such as a prepaid wireless carrier) that does not have its own network set-up. An MVNO pays wholesale fees for mobile phone services like talk-time and SMSs and then sells them at retail prices under its own brand to customers. MVNOs can set their own pricing following agreed-upon rates with their contracted mobile service operator. Under the agreement, Airtel will provide network set up services to KQ. This means the Kenya Airways MVNO will provide cellular mobile services including customer registration, SIM card issuance, billing and customer care to end users without holding a spectrum license. The MOU between the two companies was signed on Thursday morning by KQ CEO and Managing Director, Dr. Titus
NEW FRONTIERS: Kenya Airways MD Titus Naikuni (left) shares a light moment with Airtel Africa CEO, Mr Christian de Faria, moments after signing the MVNO MOU.
Naikuni and the Airtel Africa CEO, Mr Christian de Faria, at the Kenya Airways Headquarters in Embakasi, Nairobi. Dr. Naikuni said further details on the official launch and related details will be announced at a later stage once the necessary licensing requirements have been completed, a process which has already been initiated with the Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK). He explained that the roll out of a
mobile service by the airline will specifically appeal to millions of Kenya Airways guests seeking a convenient, available, accessible and affordable roaming service and experience. “Through this partnership with Airtel, we are optimistic that our guests will soon be enjoying a service that allows them better calling rates while in Kenya or roaming within the wide Airtel network,” he said. In April this year, the CAK
licensed Zioncell, Tangaza Pesa and Finserve Africa, (a subsidiary of Equity Bank) as MNVOs, allowing them to provide all forms of mobile cellular services to customers using the communications infrastructure of an existing mobile network operator. The Authority says that the variety of options that MVNOs will bring to Kenyans will lower the cost of calls due to increased competition.

businesswise Venture capitalists driving busine growth in Kenya Venture capital has played a big role in enhancing the growth of SMEs, especially in Kenya. Venture capital refers to money, given to start-up companies by investors. The people who invest in these start-ups are known as venture capitalists. The trend is gaining ground in Kenya and helping companies to secure millions of shillings in funding. Francis Karanja and a team of researchers from VC4Africa (a community of entrepreneurs), who did a study on venture capital in Kenya, have revealed that without funding start-ups make an average minimum profit of Sh34, 866. “Upon use of venture capital, the minimum profit increased to Sh600,000,” he says. Ushahidi, a Kenyan-based startup’s whose developers created a platform to map international crises and disaster relief, managed to secure $1.2 million (Sh105 million) in funding last month. The money came from a number of venture capitalists, including one led by global investor, Investment Development (ID), Omvestments, Urban.us and Synergy Growth among others. Kenya is also host to a number of venture capital companies, including Fanisis Capital, Maris Capital, the Ajibu Venture Group.

25,000 join suit against Facebook Max Schrems, A data privacy campaigner has signed up 25,000 people to join him in a legal battle against Facebook. In what he describes as a “class action lawsuit”, Schrems alleges that the way the social network monitors its members’ activity on and off the site puts it in breach of European Union laws. He also claims that the company co-operated with Prism, a USbased clandestine surveillance system launched in 2007 by the National Security Agency (NSA). This comes almost a year after whistle-blower, Edward Snowden revealed that the NSA was spying on US citizens. Schrems asked Facebook users based outside the US and Canada who wished to take part in the case to sign up via a smartphone app. Facebook has previously denied knowing about Prism before it was mentioned in leaked US government documents.
KING OF THE JUNGLE: Farmers are using lion faeces to scare off predators.
Farmers use lion dung to scare off predators Farmers have discovered a new way of keeping wild animals away from their livestock and crops. The deterrent is lion faeces. It gives off a smell so pungent that other predators keep off thinking they are running into lion territory. Farmers get the dung from the parks and place it strategically in farms and near their livestock. Rangers in Western Kenya’s, Ruma National Park and Mwea National
Reserve in Central Kenya now report that the dung is so effective in protecting crops and livestock that the parks can no longer supply it fast enough. The dried brown dung is so strong that farmers need only to apply it once in a week. The logic behind this method is that the scent given off by a much larger predator is likely to scare smaller ones away.
Mwongela, a park ranger at Ruma National Park, says in a day more than 30 farmers visit the park requesting for lion dung. “But the lion dung is very limited,” he says, noting that only about five to 10 farmers can get it per day. In Mwea, an area where farmers are always desperate to protect their rice paddies from birds the area’s National Reserve officers say that almost all the farmers are now asking
for lions’ dung as a solution. Mwea farmers, who provide 80 per cent of Kenya’s rice production, have been spending at least Sh600 a day to hire people who stay in the fields for the whole day, chasing the birds. The idea is not restricted to Kenya alone as farmers from as far as Asia to South America. are fighting predators including coyotes, wild dogs and even birds, using lion and tiger dung.

cucumbers
for a healthy skin The key to a youthful appearance and soft skin is collagen. Collagen is the main structural protein in our bodies that is found in connective tissues. Unfortunately, as we age, our bodies produce less collagen, which is what leads to thinner skin, dryness and wrinkles. One way of combating this problem, is through cucumbers. Cucumbers are considered one of the absolute best foods for the health of the skin, joints, liver, and kidneys.
A study published in the Archives of Dermatological Research in 2011, showed that cucumbers are a source of silica, a precursor to collagen and ascorbic acid, which are effective ingredients in fighting wrinkles. When we eat cucumbers, the body absorbs the silica and the ascorbic acid. This firms up the skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and its thinning. Cucumbers also contain vitamin K, an antioxidant, which has the ability to combat sun damage and

fight inflammation. This will ensure that the skin is protected from UV rays. Pantothenic acid is another compound found in cucumbers. It helps fight dark circles under the eyes and helps the skin retain moisture
keeping it looking glowing and healthy. Retinol is another compound in cucumbers helps fight dark spots and freckles because it helps control your skin’s production of melanin, ensuring that the complexion does not suffer from pimples

or scars. Cucumbers also help stimulate hair growth. Because of the sulphur and silicon that it contains, it prevents the loss of hair especially during combing. It also keep the hair moisturized leaving it shiny and glowing.
Another benefit of cucumber is that it relieves bad breath. By pressing a slice of cucumber on the roof of the mouth, it will release the phytochemicals in it, which will in turn kill the bacteria responsible for causing bad breath.

4 makingup Essentials for your makeup bag
You do not need to carry your whole makeup wardrobe with you everywhere you go. You only need a few essentials to touch up your makeup through the day. However, the contents of girls’ makeup bags vary .
Mascara
Mascara is every woman’s best friend. It is used to enhance and open up the eyes and add volume to the lashes. Mascara is, therefore, a must have in your makeup bag.
Face powder
When you leave the house you have
a glow and after a few hours your face is shiny. A shiny face is not good, it makes you look all sweaty and gross. A translucent powder is the key to keeping oil at bay. The powder is light and you will not look cakey or dry. Always have the powder at hand to save you those embarrassing moments.
Vaseline
Vaseline has been a trusted essential for decades. It is great for curing dry
patches and can be used on lips and cuticles. You can get the small size that you can throw in your bag and it will not be too bulky.
Eye shadow
Eye shadow is important especially when you need to change up your look from day to evening. Dramatic eye makeup is great for evening and understated for daytime. You do not have to carry the big pallet, you
can choose to get individual eye shadows or get the small pallets that have three or more colours in one little case. This will save you space, and it can help you identify the right combination for your look.
Lipstick/Lip Gloss
Polished lips complete a makeup look and holds the face together. Lipstick stands out more than gloss, while gloss provides a subtle shine making your lips look plumper. Depending on your gloss or lipstick, you will need to reapply it at least once in a day to keep it fresher.

Even in modern houses which have been designed based on electricity uptake, we still end up with power strips in each outlet. We’re just glad the wiring was set up well so we don’t trip a breaker every time we switch on the TV. One place we hardly think we need more outlets is the car. But as soon as we said that, you think, “Oh wait. I could totally use more outlets in my vehicle,” right? We generally think of a cigarette lighter socket as a one-to-one relationship. Or more recently, one-to-multiUSBs relationship. What if we told you it could be one-to-many, both USB and AC? The Smart AC Power Strip lets you power your smartphone and laptop from your car. Prosecutor brands Pistorius liar as murder trial winds down Olympian Oscar Pistorius returned to the dock on Thursday for the finale of his murder trial as lawyers presented closing arguments in a case that has captured the world’s attention. State lawyer Gerrie Nel started a two-day showdown between the country’s top legal minds, insisting Pistorius deliberately murdered his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013 as he declared him a “deceitful witness”. Pistorius, a double-amputee star sprinter known as the “Blade Runner”, has denied the charge in the months-long trial in which he has at times sat weeping and vomiting in the dock as grisly details of Steenkamp’s death were presented to the judge. His legal team – led by top defence lawyer Barry Roux – has sought to convince Judge Thokozile Masipa that the 27-year-old Pistorius shot his girlfriend by accident, believing her to be an intruder. The defence has sought to portray Pistorius as a “highly-vulnerable individual” obsessed with safety – a result of a difficult childhood and his disability – in a country with a skyhigh crime rate. During the trial Pistorius underwent psychiatric evaluation and an ensuing report
said he was suffering post-traumatic stress disorder. However, doctors said he was not suffering any mental illness that could prevent him from being held criminally responsible for his actions. The athlete appeared at Pretoria High Court for the start of closing arguments wearing glasses and a dark suit, clenching his jaw as Nel accused him of concocting an alibi to avoid justice. “It is the state’s case the accused was a deceitful witness,” said Nel, describing Pistorius’s testimony as “absolutely devoid of any truth.” He said there are “glaring contradictions” in the Paralympic gold medallist’s story. Initially, Pistorius said he shot Steenkamp by mistake through a lavatory door in his upmarket Pretoria home, believing her to be an intruder. But under intense cross-examination, he said he accidentally shot his girlfriend as a result of deep-seated anxiety caused by his disability and did not mean to kill anyone. Once concluding arguments are finished, Judge Thokozile Masipa is expected to adjourn the case for a couple of weeks before delivering the ruling.

Chemelil lie in wait for leaders Tusker
Former Champions Tusker FC have another opportunity to open up a gap at the top of the Kenya Premier League over Gor Mahia when they visit Chemelil on Sunday. They capitalised on the champions’s absence to move to the top of the KPL log with a routine 3-0 win over basement side Top Fry Nakuru Allstars at Ruaraka with goals from Ismail Dunga, Kevin Kimani and substitute Jesse Were. They moved to 38 points same as absent K’Ogalo’s who will be involved in Cecafa Club Championships for two week. Coach Francis Kimazi is urging his players to take advantage to extend the lead at the top in the coming weeks, though he knows it will not be easy. “Playing a team like All Stars
calls for certain toughness, we told our players to stay focused and we are happy they did that. “It’s a good feeling to return at the top but we will not be carried away by it. We will fight to make sure we stay on top and win the big prize,” said Kimanzi. The coach knows too well wait awaits him against fourth placed millers who has high regards about as far as their season has gone. “They have been impressive and playing them away will be a tough for us. We call on the team to give the match full concentration,” he sid. AFC Leopards, who will most likely be awarded three points after Sony Sugar failed to show at Afraha on Wednesday, take on KRA tomorrow.

Schumacher records theft suspect hangs himself in cell A man arrested this week for suspected involvement in the theft and leaking of a medical file on injured ex-Formula One champion Michael Schumacher was found hanged in his cell Wednesday, prosecutors said. The man, whose identity was not disclosed, worked as an executive at a Swiss helicopter air rescue company, Rega, which organised the German sportsman’s transport from a French hospital to Switzerland in June, the Zurich prosecutor’s office said in a statement. The man, arrested Tuesday and interrogated by police, had denied any wrongdoing. He was being detained in a Zurich police holding cell, the statement said. He was found hanged when officers came to bring him breakfast before a scheduled hearing before a judge. According to an initial investigation, no one else was
involved in his hanging, the prosecutor’s office said. Zurich police told AFP they had spotted no signs the man was mentally unstable or suicidal. “Out of respect for human dignity, detained people keep

Wembley likely to launch Euro 2020 finals bid Wembley’s bid to stage the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 have been given a real boost after Munich admitted they could drop their proposal. UEFA is holding the tournament in 13 venues to mark the organisation’s 60th anniversary. However, only Wembley and Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena have put forward bids to host the climax of the competition. A vote was set for September 19 but Germany want to stage Euro 2024 and fear that campaign could be harmed by the original bid. DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach said a decision had not been made but confirmed that they and FA would work out a decision. He said: “We still have the two options - to host the
final rounds or four matches in the first rounds. “We have an excellent and wonderful relationship with the England FA. We are sitting together very often and thinking about the possibilities of how we can support the other association. “It is still open but I am totally convinced that we will have both Wembley and Munich on the land map for Euro 2020.” As many as 19 countries are bidding to host games at the tournament, with most aiming for three group stage matches, plus a single knockout match from the last-16 or quarter-finals. Glasgow, Cardiff and Dublin have all bid to host early matches, along with Bilbao, Rome, Amsterdam and Copenhagen amongst others.

continue being there and top athletes coming to run here,” said Kipsang. Male athlete spokesperson Wilfred Bungei asked more athletes to participate in the noble cause.
Webb pranks flood internet Howard Webb jokes flooded the internet mostly linked to his perceived bias for Man United after he announced retirement from refereeing. We is expected to take up a role as a technical director of Professional Game Match Officials Limited. Webb, 43, who became the first whistler to referee the Champions League and World Cup final in the same year, will also be remembered for his perceived fondness for United. Critics claim he appeared to consistently award Sir Alex Ferguson’s side penalty decisions and additional time at the end of the game. “It has been gotten from a reliable source that Man United is planning to organise a testimonial for Howard Webb who has retired from refereeing. “The new Man United
boss Louis Van Gaal said Webb played a critical role in recent United success story and thus deserve the honour,” one such post read. It added: “Former coach Ferguson was full of praise for Webb labelling him the best man he has ever worked with and a United legend. “Former United players and staff have being paying tribute to the great Webb, Rio Ferdinand went as far as saying that the retirement of Webb is Man United’s biggest ever loss.” Twitter was flooded with Webb jokes such as “Howard Webb retires. He made 764 appearances for Man Utd,” from @ Manhattandoc, “Would’ve been great to get one more year out of Webb #ThankYouWebb,”@ ManUtdFF.
United offers Sh1.5b for Dutch midfield star de Jong Manchester United have made the first move in a bid to sign Netherlands international Nigel de Jong in a Sh1.5 billion deal. Having already secured Ander Herrera this summer, manager Louis van Gaal made it clear to United officials he is happy to work with what he has in midfield area at least until his top target, Kevin Strootman, recovers from a
knee injury. But Executive Vice-chairman Ed Woodward has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to strengthen the Dutchman’s options. He has identified De Jong as a potential recruit and met the Milan midfielder’s representatives in London on Thursday. The talks are understood to have gone well, with De Jong eager to
link up with Van Gaal. The Dutchman could become United’s third major summer signing after arrivals of Herrera and Luke Shaw. And Van Gaal is understood to have given the move the greenlight after working well with De Jong in his former role as Netherlands coach at the summer World Cup. The 29-year-old was forced out
of the second round victory over Mexico with a groin problem but he made remarkable return from injury for the semi-final loss to Argentina. and was praised by Van Gaal for his contribution at the group stages. “I don’t like singling out players, but Nigel de Jong was inspirational,” Van Gaal said after
the 3-2 win over Australia. United’s move for De Jong comes on the back of a prolonged and thus far unsuccessful pursuit of Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal. Despite the player and Juventus both going on record to insist a deal with United would not happen, reports of a move continue apace.

Hamiltonsays Ricciardo’s best Lewis Hamilton has hailed Daniel Ricciardo as one of the best drivers in Formula One at present following his impressive performances this season. In going up against four-time champion Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull following his promotion from Toro Rosso, few people gave
Ricciardo a chance this term. Yet the amiable Australian has stunned everyone in the sport, and in many eyes has been one of the stars of the show. Other than Hamilton and Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, Ricciardo is the only driver to win a grand
prix race in 2014, taking the chequered flag in two of the 11 races to date, which has taken him to third in the drivers’ standings. The 25-year-old’s maiden win in Canada may have come at Mercedes’ expense as both drivers suffered technical issues.
With summer preseason friendlies coming to a close this week, attention is turning on the start of another Barclays Premier League campaign. For FA Cup winners Arsenal and league champions Manchester City, the season starts on Sunday with the Community Shield at Wembley. In the grand scheme of things the match means nothing. When supporters of either club look back on the season next May the fact that they won or lost the Community Shield will not even register. With City, Liverpool and Manchester United returning from a series of sellout fixtures in the United States during pre-season trips across the Atlantic, this
weekend’s match suddenly feels out of date and a relic of a bygone era. Numerous players are yet to return from the World Cup, those that have come back are not at full fitness and the managers will likely field experimental teams at Wembley. Yet there will be 90,000 fans at Wembley and millions more watching on TV. Fans have waited three months to see their team return to action after the end of the 2013-14 campaign and Sunday marks the return of regular weekend football. It also gives them the chance to see how new signings fare in a competitive match. All eyes will be on the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Bacary Sagna at Wembley.
Rachier says search for new Gor Mahia will not be done in a hurry Kenyan champions Gor Mahia once again are need, this time a coach to replace Bobby Williamson (pictured), who is now Harambee Stars head coach. Club Chairman Ambrose Rachier says the search for a suitable coach will not be done in haste. The club is financially handicapped after losing title sponsor early this year and have been surviving from hand to mouth with prospects of another sponsor this season looking very minimal. “Getting a coach, albeit on short terms basis, will be our immediate obligation. The club needs to run and we
have to prepare for life after Williamson,” Rachier said. Rachier brushed aside reports that the club may entice former coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’

Otieno to come back. Former AFC Leopards’ coach Luc Eymael has also expressed interest in the job. “I will not be entangled into that debate at the moment. Yes there are many offers but I guess that will go down to someone we can meet at the middle in regards to our offer versus his demands,” he said. Rachier, in the meantime, thanked the outgoing coach more especially for delivering the elusive title for the first time in 18 years. The club wishes to thank the coach for his priceless time and the club, he will remain in the good history books of this big club,” he said.
