unwanted: Activists protest against gays through Nairobi streets. A Bill against gayism has been drafted.

From Page 1 “Parentless-child developmental settings and increasing attempts by homosexuals to raise children in homosexual relationships through adoption, foster care or otherwise,” says the petition. The Bill seeks to criminalise all forms of sexual relations between people of the same sex. The Draft Bill proposes that a foreigner who commits a homosexual act be stoned in public, while Kenyan nationals found guilty be jailed for life. Speaker Justin Muturi forwarded the Anti-Homosexuality Bill to the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee

for consideration. The committee is expected to report back to the House. The Bill also introduces the issue of “Aggravated Homosexuality”, which includes committing such acts with a minor or where offenders are HIV-positive. This, the Bill proposes, should be punished through stoning to death in public. Parliament has already formed a caucus against the gay lifestyle comprising MPs Irungu Kang’ata (Kiharu), Julius Ndegwa (Lamu West), John Njoroge (Kasarani), Clement Wambugu (Mathioya) and Stephen Kinyanjui of Kinangop. “The petition aims at providing

comprehensive and enhanced legislation to protect the cherished culture of the people of Kenya, legal, religious and traditional family values against the attempts of sexual rights activists seeking to impose their values of sexual promiscuity on the people of Kenya,” the petition reads. The party is lobbying for support from religious and community leaders. “We have spoken to a number of key leaders to have them support the Bill. We believe this is a serious issue and we are ready to push it the whole distance,” Zac Momanyi, the party Chairman told X News.

ODM wins Mathare mini poll Residents of Nairobi’s Mathare constituency have voted in ODM’s Steven Kariuki as their new MP in a by-election that saw him beat TNA’s George Wanjohi. Kariuki garnered 14,966 votes against 14,082 by Wanjohi. The by-election was triggered by the nullification of Wanjohi’s election in March last year. Kariuki filed the petition saying there were widespread irregularities in last year’s poll. A total of nine candidates contested the seat but none of the other seven could garner 200 votes. Former Kasarani MP William Omondi, who vied as an independent candidate, won 194 votes. Only 29, 733 constituents cast the ballot out of the 88, 053 registered voters in the constituency, representing a 30 per cent turn-out. “As the Independent Electoral Commission, we only record what people want,” Commissioner Thomas Letangule said at St Teresa’s Girls Secondary which was the main tallying centre. A total of 220 votes were rejected as another 84 were classified as spoilt. No incidences were reported and many hailed the vote as as peaceful. The final results were announced shortly after 9pm.

Students hurt by escalator at JKIA Seven secondary school students were Monday evening injured by a malfunctioning escalator at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Kenya Airports Authority officials said 19 students who were traveling to the US and UK, were injured. on the escalator in Terminal 1C (formerly Unit 2). US faces worldwide opposition on spying and drone warfare The US is facing widespread global resentment over its eavesdropping tactics. A new Pew Research Centre study has found that the country also faces a decline in the view that it respects the personal freedoms of its people. The use of drones, to spy on and attack the country’s enemies, is also widely unpopular. But in most countries, there is little evidence this opposition has severely harmed America’s overall image. In nearly all countries polled, majorities oppose the monitoring of e-mails and phone calls of foreign leaders and their citizens by the US government. Ironically, Americans mostly agree with the view that eavesdropping on foreign leaders is an acceptable practice, and they are divided over using this

technique on average people in other countries. However, the majority of Americans and others around the world agree that while it is acceptable to spy on suspected terrorists, and that it is unacceptable to spy on American citizens. In 39 of 44 countries surveyed, majorities oppose US drone strikes on foreign countries. In fact, opposition to drone attacks has increased in many nations since last year. Pew experts note that Kenya, Israel and the US are the only nations polled where at least half of the public supports drone strikes. “In spite of the unpopularity of US spying and its use of drones, America remains more popular globally than China, its principal rival in world affairs,” say the researchers.

Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo (pictured) has given directors of firms adversely mentioned in the Lamu land acquisition a 48-hour ultimatum to record statements with police or face arrest. The orders were issued today

Both the CID and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission are carrying out a joint probe into the matter. But some of the directors of the firms which are yet to be made public have not been identified.

Those who missed out this time round have been admitted to pursue diploma courses. Others are expected to join the universities on self-sponsorship or enroll at private institutions. The minimum requirement for university admissions were lowered to B- (minus) of 58 points for female candidates and a mean grade of B for their male counterparts. Some of the middle level colleges that will admit the students include Kagumo Teachers Training College, Kibabi, and the Kenya Technical Teachers College. US offers Liberia test drug Zmapp for Ebola

Liberia is set to receive an untested experimental drug, Zmapp, this week to treat people infected with Ebola, the government has announced. The move follows requests to US by Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the government said. Barclays half-year profits hit Sh6.1b Barclays Bank of Kenya’s half year pre-tax profit rose 12 per cent to Sh6.1billion compared with the same period last year. The surge was largely attributed to the rise in customer loans, the bank said on Tuesday. Jeremy Awori, the bank’s Managing Director, said the loan book grew by 20 per cent to Sh128 billion during the period under review. Net interest income grew by 5 per cent to Sh9.7 billion, while noninterest income fell by 5 per cent mainly due to a fall on foreign exchange income following a stable currency market. The bank has announced plans to open a mortgage centre to help increase lending to buyers. It also plans to set up an platform to play a bigger role in the debt and equity capital markets.

countries in Africa as well. News that Liberia will receive the drugs came as medical ethics specialists met in Geneva to explore the use of such new treatments. The World Health Organisation (WHO), which is hosting the meeting, says some 1,013 have died of Ebola in West Africa. “The experimental drugs are to be brought in the country by a representative of the US government later this week,” a statement on the Liberian president’s website said. However, US officials said its role had been to put

Liberian officials in contact with Zmapp maker Mapp Biopharmaceutical. AFP news agency said the pharmaceutical firm said its supply of the drug was exhausted after its supplies were sent to West Africa. The drug was “provided at no cost in all cases,” the company said. Zmapp has been used in US on two aid workers who have shown signs of improvement, and a Roman Catholic priest, infected with Ebola in Liberia, who is currently being treated in a hospital in Madrid.

Kari new disease-free maize variety may mark end of chronic famine risk

Kenya will soon be food secure after a research institute developed a maize seed variety that is immune to common diseases. The Kenya Agricultural Research Institute developed the Tegemeo variety which is resistant to Lethal Necrosis

Disease. The viral disease has wiped maize fields, especially in South Rift, since it was first reported four years ago. Kenya’s harvests have dwindled over the period, raising concerns over risks of famine. Speaking during the

inspection of Chebaara and Nogirwet irrigation schemes in Bomet, at the weekend, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei said Tegemeo is available in retail shops. Koskei urged Kenyans to avoid making maize the only staple food if they have to

succeed economically. “Kenya’s mind-set that they cannot survive without planting maize should be discarded. They should go for alternative crops so as to boost their economic status,” Koskei said. In the recent past, stakeholders have raised concern over the possibility of food crisis after reports emerged that people are dying of starvation in parts of the country. But the Government insists there are sufficient food stocks and has also imported additional maize. Turkana and Baringo are some of the worst hit areas with reports of victims succumbing to hunger. Koskei said Sh70 million has been disbursed to fund the first and second phases of the project in Bomet. Lethal Necrosis Disease has swept maize fields season after season after farmers failed to heed expert advice to implement rotational cropping to break the lifecycle of the virus.

Top medic says Kenya ready in case of Ebola outbreak The Government has declared that it is ready to deal with Ebola cases that may occur in the country amid growing concerns that the deadly virus could spread to Kenya. The concerns follow continued flights by Kenya Airways to destinations already ravaged by the epidemic. Director of Medical Services Nicholas Muraguri says they have set up isolation wards at Kenyatta National Hospital. An advanced diagnostic centre at the Kenya Medical Research Institute has also been set for emergency cases that might arise. Doctors and nurses have been trained on what to do should any case be reported. A multi-agency team has been monitoring the disease since it broke out in West Africa. “We have the required capacity in place to deal with any Ebola cases if such an eventuality was to occur in this country,” he said.

Gaza peace talks resume as new ceasefire agreed Indirect talks between Palestinians and Israelis which is aimed at ending the hostilities in Gaza, have resumed in Cairo, Egyptian state-run EgyNews reported. The talks are taking place amid another three-day cease-fire brokered by Egypt after the previous one ended last Friday following resumed fighting between Hamas and Israeli forces. While the negotiators will

be aiming to broker a lasting peace deal for Gaza, the latest truce is also expected to give time for humanitarian aid to reach some of the victims of the Gaza conflict that has raged for more than a month. “The humanitarian needs are very, very big right now” in Gaza, said Erika Tovar, a spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross. “Now we are able to move around better

because of the cease-fire.” Israel wants Hamas, the militant Islamic group that runs Gaza, to disarm as part of a demilitarization of the territory. The Palestinian delegation’s demands include the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza; a commitment to the 2012 memorandum of understanding, which called for an end to Israel’s blockade on Gaza; an extension of fishing rights off the coast;

and the reopening of air and seaports. Israeli authorities restrict the movement of goods and people in and out of Gaza, saying they need to prevent weapons being imported. Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev yesterday said that “if nonviolence is maintained,” the talks could be ongoing. Israel would be willing to ease sanctions “if all aggression from Gaza stops,” he said. The Palestinian delegation

includes representatives from several factions, including Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Fatah. Senior Hamas official Izzat Risheq said this would be the last time Palestinians would participate in negotiations. Before the latest truce Hamas officials threatened to leave “We will not stay long in the absence of serious negotiations,” Mousa Abu Marzouk, a senior Hamas official in Cairo, said.

Community policing duty for retired cops

The government will now incorporate 10,000 retired police officers into community policing to help restore security in the country. Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku says the retired officers will be helpful in sharing their experience on how to deal with insecurity. Lenku, told journalists after meeting the retirees at Harambee House early today said a legislative framework will be drafted to support the initiative. The government is grappling with insecurity challenges posed by Al Shabaab militants who have vowed revenge attacks unless the Kenyan military is withdrawn from Somalia.

beneficiaries: Up to 40 academically gifted Kenyans have won Equity Bank scholarships to universities across the world.

Up to 40 academically gifted Kenyans have landed scholarships to some of the world’s most prestigious universities this year after enrolling with the Equity African Leaders Programme (EALP). The programme is a product of the Equity Group Foundation (EGF). EGF Chairman James Mwangi said the scholars who sat their Kenya Certificate of Secondary

Education (KCSE) examination last year, have received admission to undergraduate studies in some of the best universities. “We are proud to witness another group of students being airlifted to leading world universities after a year’s mentorship among other gifted scholars admitted to this year’s EALP,” he said. EALP has benefited more than 1,965 scholars who have studied or

are studying in local and foreign universities. The scholars intern at Equity Bank branches before joining universities and during holidays. Success of the initiative will push the total number of students under the programme abroad to 190. Mwangi was speaking when he confirmed the admissions last week. Universities that have offered scholarships include

Arizona, Yale, Toronto, Harvard, McGill, Stanford, Amherst, Bowdoin, Brown and Cambridge. Others are Columbia, Cornell, Duke, London School of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Middlebury, Princeton, Seoul and Smith College. Also in the list are Swarthmore College, University of California and Berkley among others.

Council plans 17-storey CBD car park The Nairobi City County (NCC) plans set up set a 17-storey car park in the Central Business District (CBD) at a cost of Sh4 billion. NCC has appealed for tenders for the construction of the park which, once completed, will accommodate up to 3,000 vehicles. NCC officials say the high-rise

will be erected on the Sunken Car Park land near Aga Khan Walk which has less than 500 slots. “What we want is a seven-storey podium which is predominantly a car park. Then we have a tower which is mixed use,” said Tom Odongo, NCC Executive for Land, Housing and Physical Planning. He says the tower will also host

offices, recreational facilities and restaurants. The project will be funded in a public private partnership which involves investors providing capital and the county providing land. The cost of parking will be determined by how motorists make use of space; a shift from the current system of a daily flat rate of Sh300.

Stanclaus Agacho, Development Manager for Automatic Tariff Building (ATB), a local firm with partners overseas, told X News even with the extra spaces in CBD, the cost will rise to discourage congestion in the city. Meanwhile, NCC officials say the 17-storey structure could rise to 30 storeys based on returns for investors.

Power prices to fall as 140mw is added to the grid

The cost of power is set to fall in the coming months as the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has added 140 Megawatts (MW) to the national grid from the current 280 MW Olkaria geothermal project, KenGen Managing Director and CEO, Albert Mugo has said. The addition comes from two units, one of which has already completed reliability tests while the other is expected to complete the tests by mid this month. By the end of the year, the entire project will be fully commissioned, providing consumers with a reprieve from the current sharp rise in power prices There has been a steep rise

in prices of electricity over the past few months. Last month, consumers took a slight hit when new tariffs were increased by about 10 per cent. Households consuming 200 Kilowatt Hours of electricity are now paying about Sh4, 700 a month, up from Sh4, 300. Mugo says that Kenyans should expect to see the cost of electricity decline in the coming months as geothermal power gradually replaces the expensive thermal power. “We have already uploaded 140 MW and the balance will be fully commissioned and connected to the national grid before the end of this year,” said Mugo.

Kenya signs deal with US to fight money laundering, and terrorism Kenya has signed a Customs Mutual Assistance Agreement (CMAA) with the United States, a move aimed at fighting drug trafficking, money laundering, and terrorism-related activities. CMAAs are mutual agreements between countries and are enforced by their respective regulators, which in Kenya’s case will be Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). The agreement comes at a time when Kenya is grappling with the threat of terrorism. The deal was signed between the acting US Customs and Border Protection Deputy Commissioner, Kevin McAleenan and Kenya’s Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Henry Rotich. “Customs Mutual Assistance Agreements are valuable tools in the enforcement of our laws as they facilitate information sharing between international partners,” McAleenan said. “This agreement will expand our efforts to combat illicit cross-border activities and will enable us to continue our work

to prevent, detect and investigate customs offenses.” CMAAs provide the legal framework for the exchange of information and evidence to assist countries in the enforcement of customs laws, including tax evasion, trafficking, money laundering, and terrorism-related activities. The United States has so far signed 71 Customs Mutual Assistance Agreements with other customs administrations across the world. The US-Kenya Agreement was signed at the US Customs and Border Protection headquarters as part of the just concluded US-Africa Leadership Summit in Washington, DC. The Summit included meetings between President Barack Obama and 51 African heads of state. Custom and Border Protection (CBP) is one of the US Department of Homeland Security’s largest and most complex components, with a priority mission of keeping terrorists and their weapons out of the US.

European Union’s organic beef market ripe for Kenyan farmers Kenya’s beef industry is ideally placed to target organic export markets in the European Union (EU). In fact, researchers from the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge in the UK say that a growing preference for organic beef has increased demand in the EU. “These markets, in the era of increasing

consumer demands for traceability and ‘ethically superior’ products of animal origin, are highly lucrative,” says David Mills from the University of Cambridge. A lot of Kenya’s cattle are ‘organic’ and ‘home-grown’, unlike many western cattle, which are pumped full of hormones to make them larger, a trend that health conscious consumers are

MEATY MATTERS: A KMC Worker. Kenyan farmers can reap from the ready EU’s organic beef demand

United Kingdom (UK) firms are intending to hire staff at the fastest rate witnessed in the country in 16 years. A research by Accountancy firm, BDO, which measures businesses’ expectations over the next six months, said its jobs index for July, which measures hiring plans

The Kenya Meat Commission, the country’s regulator for beef exports, currently exports meat products to the Middle East, Tanzania, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and Egypt. Looking at the successes of Namibia and Botswana in the standard EU export market, Kenya’s beef sector, like many other developing countries, could provide a wind fall to cattle farmers. Mills says with the pre-existent livestock industry, an estimated 75 per cent of the population relying on the sector directly or indirectly, transport, markets and slaughterhouses, farmers stand to make a fortune from the export of organic beef products. the phone waterproof for at least 10 minutes and is ideal for rock climbers, mountain climbers, campers and other adventurous groups. However, the case has a number of shortfalls. For instance, it reduces screen sensitivity making it harder to type. Users have also complained about it being difficult to access the USB port and the headphone jack. The case also makes the phone bulky and almost double its weight—For slim phones like the iPhone 5 it makes the phone look like two iPhones stuck together.

Adulterous Gikuyu men fined 11 goats, women returned to parents Just like other Africa traditions, extramarital sex or sex before marriage among the Kikuyu was highly condemned and punitively punished by a council of elder called kiama. For instance, if one committed adultery or raped, the case was brought before

the community council of elders. Charles Kamau say kiama evaluated the evidence for or against the offence before pronouncing judgement. The 57 year-old says a man found to have raped a woman could pay a fine of up to 11 sheep or goats, three of

which will be case fee for the kiama. The nine will be paid to the parents as compensation. A married adulterous woman was sent back to the parents, who will re-carpet the relationship by paying two he-goats. Elders from both sides could

share a traditional beer to mark the restart for the couple. Kamau says if the woman slipped back to the act, the husband could file for a divorce and demand ruracio, which was bride price paid to her parents. But in the interest of children, reconciliation was as

times given chance. The man involved in the immoral act was beaten thoroughly by the offended husband. He could also bear any other punishment prescribed by kiama. A man who impregnated a girl was also punished with the same number of animals

(nine) to the parents and the kiama. The man was counted an outcast not only by the community, but also by his age group. The girl was subjected to kuhingwo na gucambio, which was a form of ridicule, besides remaining single after giving birth.

carrots, potatoes and peas. The beef is cut into average pieces. The other ingredients (tomatoes, onions, garlic, and pepper) are chopped and set aside. Sauté the onions in a cooking pot. Add the beef, do not add water just yet, let it cook for a few minutes stirring repeatedly to avoid sticking on the pot. Cover the pot to cook until the water produced by the beef has evaporated then add a little water and let it cook until tender. Once tender, add the garlic, pepper and tomatoes, let them cook until

the tomatoes are tender then stir, ensuring they mix well with the beef. Add the curry powder as desired and any other seasoning, stirring thoroughly until it combines to form a thick and pasty stew. Bring to a slight boil, turn the heat down to low setting and let it simmer for about five minutes. As it simmers, add the coriander leaves on top of the stew. Remove from heat and set aside until ready to serve. It can be served with ugali, rice or chapati.

The aroma of civet’s defacated coffee beans Kopi luwak is the world’s most expensive gourmet coffee and is very much loved by Indonesians. A cup can leave you up to Sh2, 638 out of pocket while about a kilogramme of the coffee beans will cost up to Sh35,180. It is also called civet coffee. The beans are Indonesia is the seeds of coffee berries that were eaten and defecated by the Asian palm civet. Indonesians’ love for this brand of coffee dates back to coffee production in Indonesia in the 18th century where the native farmers and plantation workers were prohibited by the Dutch colonisers from picking coffee berries for their own use. The curious locals still wanted to

have a taste of the coffee so they started collecting the civet droppings roasted them and ground them to make their own coffee. The fame of the aromatic coffee soon spread from locals to the Dutch plantation owners and soon became a favourite. The animal eats the coffee berries, unable to digest them, it deposits the seeds on the forest floor where the locals collect them. The cat loves the coffee

berry for its fleshy pulp and is defecated with other faecal matter. Despite being in contact with faeces the beans contain little amounts of organisms that are associated with faeces. The farmers thoroughly wash the beans, remove the endocarp and roast them. It has been argued that the collected coffee goes through various processes that improves its taste. The first being, the

palm civet chooses to eat coffee berries that contain better beans. Secondly, the animal’s digestive enzymes like the proteolytic enzymes, seep into the beans during digestion giving the beans great taste. The civets are kept in farms, either caged or allowed to roam within defined boundaries and fed coffee berries. Animal activists are unhappy with this.

Yego goes for gold in Morocco

Commonwealth javelin Champion Julius Yego will be eyeing another medal in the ongoing Africa Championships in Morocco. Fresh from his history-making streak at the Club Games in Glasgow, Scotland, as the first Kenyan to win a medal in field events, Yego is keen to go one better in North Africa. The CID officer is out to add the Africa crown to his Commonwealth and All Africa Games titles to his trophy list. Yego, who is a self-taught javelin thrower after learning his trade by watching videos on YouTube,

admitted he had almost dropped out of the competition after injuring his groin at the warm-up track but said competing in the final was too important to miss. He managed 83.87m final throw for gold. His main concern will be Egyptian, Ihab Abdelrahman El Sayed, who in May set a new Africa record with 89.21m at the IAAF Diamond League in Shanghai. “He will be the person to watch no doubt, however in championships there is the surprise element, I have to be aware of that, at the end of the day I want to defend my title,” he said.

Tsonga thrilled by Federer whip in Rogers Cup finals Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had one more surprise in his bag of upsets; beating second seeded Roger Federer 7-5 7-6 (3) to cap a scintillating march to the Rogers Cup title on Sunday. After knocking off world number one Novak Djokovic in the third round, taking out twice champion and eighth seed Andy Murray in the quarters and seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov in the semis, Tsonga denied 17-time grand slam winner Federer a landmark 80th career title. “I played well all this week…..I beat many good guys,” said Tsonga. “It’s

a big achievement because I worked really hard to come back from my knee injury last year. “Unfortunately there is no secret behind this there is a lot of work. “I’m waiting for this since couple of months now. I was looking for my best level, today I had it and it’s great.’ Certainly there was no disputing that Tsonga’s win was well-deserved, the 13th seeded Frenchman’s hit list including players who had won seven of the last 10 Canadian titles (Djokovic 2012, 2011, 2007; Murray 2010, 2009 and Federer 2004, 2006).

It marked the first time since 2002 that a player had beaten the four top seeds to win a Masters Series event. “He beat great players along the way and backed it up with another great final,’ said Federer, who turned 33 on Friday and had been hoping to celebrate his birthday by lifting the trophy. “No excuses. I think he played really solid and well when he had to. “I wish I could have played a bit better in the finals today. “There were things I could have done better, but, overall it was a positive week.

Manchester United summer signings Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera have revealed their excitement at making their Old Trafford debut for the club this week. United are scheduled to play Valencia at home on Tuesday night in what will also be Louis van Gaal’s first game at Old Trafford since his July arrival. Fans are eager to get their first glimpse of the new boss as well as Shaw and Herrera. The duo impressed on the recent US pre-season tour, with the team returning home unbeaten along with the International Champions Cup. Both have played at Old Trafford before, but neither has experienced it in a United shirt and are looking forward to the occasion. Shaw said: “As a kid, it’s a dream

to play at Old Trafford. It’s one of the biggest arenas in the world, you would say. To know it’s going to be my home ground is something special. I can’t wait to get my first touch on the pitch just to relish it.” “I know it’s the Theatre of Dreams and I want to play there now, I can’t wait. Things went well in America but we want to do the same in front of our supporters. “I am really looking forward to the match. I know it’s a friendly but I really want to win it. I played against Valencia a lot during my time in Spain, they always want to keep the ball and traditionally they are an offensive team and have just won the Emirates Cup, so it will be a good challenge for us,” Herera said.

Lennox Lewis’ ex promoter to have sex change CHaMPIOn: Lennox Lewis in action. His promoter is set to undergo a sex change operation.

Blow for Kenya as Wanangwe is injured, and captain Aura quits Prolific goal scorer Davies Wanagwe has been ruled out of next month’s International Hockey Federation (FIH) World Hockey League Series in Nairobi from September 2-7 due to a knee injury. The Nairobi Simba forward has been suffering from a nagging knee injury which he suffered a couple of months ago. “It the first time such a prestigious world event is coming to Kenya and, I’m dejected to miss out on representing my country,” said the player ahead of the five nation competition. Wanagwe said he was advised to take a two-month break from the game after an MRI scan revealed the extent of the injury. The national team, coached by Meshack Senge has been hit by another blow after veteran forward and captain Zack Aura announced his international retirement therefore ruling himself out of the forth-

coming competition “Oh yeah it’s now official. I have retired from international hockey. Its time the young boys took over. All the best team Kenya,” said Aura via his social media post. Coach Senge said the injured Wanangwe will be greatly missed but has called upon the other players to step and fill the void. “The preparations are going on well. I believe Kenya has a great chance of qualifying for the global tourney on home soil,” He said. The teams coming for the competition, which will serve as a qualifier for the 2015 World League Championships, are Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, Nigeria and Tanzania. There will also be four women’s team in the tournament. All the finalists at the World League Series, which will be played in Uruguay in July 2015, will earn an automatic entry to the Rio 2016 Olympics Games.

Lennox Lewis has issued a statement in support of Frank Maloney following the news that his former boxing promoter is now living as a woman called Kellie and is preparing to have a sex change. Maloney helped Lewis become the undisputed heavyweight champion but retired from boxing in October. Lewis said he was shocked when he heard about the news, but says he respects the 61-year-old’s decision. Posting on his Facebook page, Lewis wrote: “I was just as shocked as anyone at the news about my former promoter and my initial thought was that it was a wind up. “The great thing about life, and boxing, is that, day to day, you never know what to expect. “This world we live in isn’t always cut and dried or black and white, and coming from the boxing fraternity, I can only imagine what a difficult decision this must be for Kellie (formerly Frank) However, having taken some time to read Kellie’s statements,

I understand better what she, and others in similar situations, are going through. “I think that ALL people should be allowed to live their lives in a way that brings them harmony and inner peace. I respect Kellie’s decision and say that if this is what brings about true happiness in her life, than so be it. #LiveAndLetLive.’ Maloney revealed she has felt trapped in the wrong body ever since she was a child. Speaking she said: “I can’t keep living in the shadows, that is why I am doing what I am today. Living with the burden any longer would have killed me.” The 61-year-old admits the pressure and confusion caused by her struggles with her identity caused battles with drink, depression and drugs and has been secretly receiving counselling and therapy. Kellie says she kept her turmoil in the shadows because she feared a backlash from the notoriously macho world of boxing. “I have never been able to tell anyone in boxing,’ she added. “Can you imagine me walking into a boxing hall dressed as a woman and putting an event on?” She is now over a year into the transition period before surgery.

Murunga urges Homeboyz to soldier on Homeboyz RFC coach Paul Murunga is convinced his players gave thier best in the 5-21 loss to Kenya Commercial Bank in Sunday’s Dala Sevens at Kisumu’s Mamboleo Showground. Murunga said the bankers cannot be underrated having gone 12-match unbeaten run in the Kenya Rugby Union National Sevens Circuit. “The boys put on a brave show against our opponents, we tried many time to break their attacks and create our own, if you ask me it was a solid performance,” said the coach. “As a team we failed to defend the George Mwangi Kabeberi Memorial Sevens last week which they (KCB) won. We have all to fight for going to the last three legs,” said the coach.

beaten: Homeboyz coach Paul Murunga.

In the finals, Philip Wamae broke through two tackles to score under the posts.

Ken Moseti converted as the bankers led 7-0. Edwin Salamba scored KCB’s second try from a spadework of Jacob Ojee, a former Kisumu RFC player. Moseti added the extras to extend the lead 14-0 at halftime. In the second half, Michael Wanjala scored a try for Homeboyz but missed the conversion. When Oliver Mang’eni dotted the ball on the try line and Moseti converted to extend the lead 21-5, Homeboyz had a steep hill to climb. KCB lead the series as the action takes a break to resume in Mombasa on August 23 and 24 during the Driftwood Sevens where they are the top seeds.

Madrid worried over Ronaldo’s fitness levels TUESday, AUGUST 12, 2014

stepped up : Ronaldo has stepped up training over the last few days to ensure he is in shape for the new season.

Rory Mcllroy’s historic second back-to-back title World number one Rory McIlroy edged a gripping US PGA Championship in near darkness at Valhalla to become the first UK player to win back-to-back majors. Three players were still in contention at the final hole, with heavy rain having earlier led to a twohour delay. A see-saw battle on the back nine witnessed four different players sharing the lead at some stage. But it was the Northern Irishman who dug deep to follow his Open success. The 25-year-old had earlier seen his overnight one-shot lead wiped out on the front nine and was three shots behind the leaders at one point before taking control after the turn. A three-under 68 on the final day saw off Phil Mickelson, with Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson a shot further adrift. McIlroy later credited the “best golf of his life” with producing

a summer beyond his “wildest dreams”. However McIlroy would not have finished the day were it not for a fine display of sportsmanship from Mickelson and Fowler. The pair were in the group ahead and allowed him to play up behind them as he tried to beat the fading light following the rain delay. Flashlights illuminated the night sky as McIlroy showed sheer relief after holing out his final putt, fist-pumping the air and celebrating on the course with his father Gerry before receiving the huge Wanamaker Trophy. McIlroy’s resurgence on the back nine capped an enthralling final day and saw him become the third youngest player of the modern era - after Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus - to win four of golf ’s biggest prizes, while he also becomes the first man to win back-to-back majors since Ireland’s Padraig Harrington in 2008.

Although Cristiano Ronaldo will start for Real Madrid in tonight’s Uefa Super Cup clash against Sevilla in Cardiff, senior Santiago Bernabeu figures remain concerned over the long-term fitness of their finest footballer. Ronaldo has stepped up training over the last few days to ensure he is in shape for the new season as the European champions chase six different trophies. The Portugal international is desperate to feature in Uefa Super Cup - the only title of the sextet that he has not won in his professional career. Madrid’s coaching staff and directors watched with concern as Ronaldo struggled with the Seleccao at the World Cup. He looked well below his peak fitness and avoiding sprints as he appeared afraid of pushing his fragile frame to its limits - something he has done on too many occasions in recent seasons.

Cristiano’s competitive streak has seen him turn out even when he probably should have rested at times for Madrid. And the 29-year-old wants to play in every minute of every game, but that is now no longer in his best interests. Still suffering from a degenerative knee condition called tendonosis and a long-standing thigh problem, what Ronaldo requires more than anything is rest. This summer, he has had very little of that after representing his country at Brazil 2014 and then returning to training with Madrid at the end of July. He has been eased back into action by the Spanish side, however, and featured for just 17 minutes against Manchester United in his team’s tour of the United States late last month. Also at stake, however, was the Champions League and again, Cristiano’s condition was described as “not serious” and his withdrawal from training “precautionary”. But he was below his best as Madrid claimed La Decima by beating Atletico and trained alone or with ice-packs during the World Cup, looking well short of full fitness when his nation needed him most.

Man United to boost bid for Madrid winger Manchester United are hoping to launch a Sh7.3billion bid for Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria after his proposed move to Paris Saint-Germain fell through. The Red Devils have been chasing the Argentine wide-man for much of the summer as they seek new additions in the attacking midfield positions, but looked set to miss out on him as PSG held talks with the player over a possible move to Ligue 1. But the French champions later admitted the 26-year-old was too expensive for them, paving way for United to swoop for him. New manager Louis

van Gaal has spent big on Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw this summer and has more big-name targets in mind as he looks to rebuild a squad that can improve on last season’s disastrous trophy-less season and seventh place finish in the Premier League. Di Maria, a Champions League and Copa del Rey winner with Madrid last term, would be a world class signing for the club. His 11 goals and 26 assists helped deliver success to the Spanish giants in 2013/14. United will hope a bid of around Sh7.3 billion will be enough to persuade Real to offload to the Theatre of Dreams.

I haven’t slowed down, says Raikkonen

history maker: Rory McIlroy became the first European to win three of the four Majors since the Masters tournament.

Kimi Raikkonen insists he has not slowed down since his winter return to Ferrari from Lotus. The statement follows a disappointing run of results by the driver who is confident that he and the team can eventually return to winning ways. Even after he was tipped to provide Fernando Alonso with one

of the sternest team challenge, Raikkonen has trailed his new team-mate since the start of the season. While Alonso has twice finished on the podium and sits fourth in the Drivers’ Championship on 115 points, Raikkonen is in 12th place on 27 points. The driver has struggled to marry his driving

style with the underperforming F14 T. The sixth place he scored at the last race in Hungary represented the best result of the former world champion’s season. He is all too aware that there is a lot of ground to make up when the season resumes in Belgium later this month.
