State plans to monitor private conversations Life expecancy in Kenya increases
Privacy for Kenyans is at an all-time risk should talks between the Government and an American tech firm bear fruits. Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku revealed on Thursday that the Government was negotiating with US firm Richmar and Associates for the supply of portable data centre technology and Biometric Identification Cards. The equipment is capable of holding an individual’s all biometric details, including voice. Access to such unique physical and biological traits will allow the Government to monitor all forms of communication by and among Kenyans.

WHO urges action on tobacco use More than 600,000 people die annually worldwide from use and/or exposure to tobacco. The World Health Organisation has urged Kenya to implement tobacco control measures to reduce the high number of deaths and other devastating effects in the country. “The present and future generations must be urgently protected from the devastating health, social, environmental and economic consequences of tobacco consumption and exposure,” WHO’s Tobacco Control Program Officer, Joyce Nato said. “I’m urging the government to implement the tobacco control measures in the WHO framework convention on tobacco control.” WHO says the deaths resulting from the use of tobacco are greatly hampering development, not only in Kenya but across the world as more youths pick up the habit.
Kerosene, diesel prices come down
Kenyans can have a little relief for the next one month following a reduction in the prices of both diesel and kerosene even though the price of petrol increased. The price of diesel has reduced by Sh1.69 cents while that of kerosene by a shilling and seven cents. The price of petrol however, went up by 76 cents. The Energy Regulatory Commission attributes the reduction in the retail price of diesel and kerosene to a decrease in their average landed cost. The Commission says there was a decrease in the average landed cost for both diesel and kerosene at 2.06 per cent and 1.92 per cent respectively, while the landed cost of petrol rose marginally by 1.67 per cent .
Concern over increase in caffeine addiction Health experts are investigating the safety of caffeine in snacks and energy drinks, worried about the increasing impact of the stimulant, which is added to a growing number of products. In fact, across the globe, close to 46 per cent of the world’s population is currently taking the drug on a regular basis. According to experts from the Tea Research Foundation of Kenya, caffeine is the most popular and widely used drug in the world. It is a substance found in the leaves, seeds or fruit of a number of plant species, such as coffee and tea plants. It occurs naturally in coffee,
tea, cocoa, kola nuts and a variety of other plants. The United States-based, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) highlighted the “unfortunate example” of Wrigley chewing gum producing packs of eight sticks, which each contained as much caffeine as half a cup of coffee. Subsequently, Wrigley said it would “pause” production of the product but the FDA says other manufacturers have yet to be outed, with soft drink makers being the most likely culprits. “Many people just aren’t aware of how much caffeine they are taking,” says Lynn Goldman of the George Washington University School of Public Health.
Kenyans’ life expectancy up but hard times await
LONG LIFE: A senior citizen. A UN report says Kenyans will live longer but under hard economic conditions.
Kenyans can now hope to live longer although under conditions worse than before, a study by a UN agency says. The United Nations Development Programme in a report released Wednesday says life expectancy for Kenyans has improved from 51.3 years in 1996 to 61.7 in 2013. Similarly, the report says individual incomes have also increased by 32.5 percent over the last four years. But these were the only positives from the report that generally casted harder life for Kenyans in the years to come. As a result, Kenya has moved down two places to be ranked 147 out of 187 countries in terms of human development growth. Generally, it found most Kenyans to be worse off than last year. Violent conflicts around the country, poverty and lack of basic services were found to be responsible for this. “Close to 600 lives have been lost in these conflicts alone and more than 215 000 persons displaced,” UNDP’s resident representative to Kenya Ms Nardos BekeleThomas said during the launch of the report at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Nairobi. She said the high levels of unemployment and bad policies are to blame for the conflicts which have exposed those displaced to many risks and disasters.
Study links obesity to development of 10 common types of cancer A higher body mass index (BMI) increases the risk of developing 10 of the most common cancers , the largest study of its kind on the link between BMI and cancer, involving more than 5 million adults in the UK,
shows. UK researchers at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the Farr Institute of Health Informatics estimate that over 12,000 cases of these 10 cancers each year are attributable to being
overweight or obese. The researchers calculate that if average BMI in the population continues to increase, there could be over 3500 extra cancers every year as a result. “The number of people who
are overweight or obese is rapidly increasing both in the UK and worldwide. It is well recognised that this is likely to cause more diabetes and cardiovascular disease. If these trends continue, we can also expect to see
substantially more cancers as a result”, says the study, which was jointly funded by UK’s Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust. The findings have been published in The Lancet. The study linked
each 5 kg/m² increase in BMI with higher risk of cancers of the uterus (62 per cent increase), gallbladder (31 per cent), kidney (25 per cent), cervix (10 per cent), thyroid (9 per cent), and leukaemia (9 per cent).

Plan to snoop into calls, emails From Page 1 And Lenku confirmed that the technology has the capacity to track all communication from cellphones (including messages), satellite and internet. “The technology has the ability to strategically and tactically track all forms of communication. State officials convicted of graft spared death sentence MPs have spared public officials death sentences and life in prison once convicted of corruption involving millions of shillings. But public officials, including governors and Cabinet secretaries, will have to step down and earn half their salaries if they are charged
with corruption. Lawmakers on Thursday passed the stiffer penalties which are contained in the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act. Kiharu MP Irungu Kang’ata had earlier proposed that death sentences be imposed on those found
to have been responsible for the loss of more than Sh1 billion. He also wanted those responsible for the loss of between Sh100 million to Sh1 billion jailed for life. But his colleagues disagreed, saying Kenya has not reached a crisis point in tackling corruption to
introduce such penalties. The changes to the law which were sponsored by Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi also requires courts to hear and conclude such cases in two years. The judges were also given powers to deny bail to suspects they are
convinced may interfere with witnesses or disappear if granted bond. The changes are aimed at giving the anti-grant body Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission more power to act on cases of corruption.

WHO: Ebola threat underrated The magnitude of the Ebola crisis in West Africa is “vastly” underestimated, the World Health Organization has said. The deadly disease has killed more than 1,000 people and infected at least 1,975 others in
Nigeria, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since the outbreak in March. These figures reflect the count as of Monday. “The outbreak is expected to continue for some time,” WHO said in a statement late
yesterday. “Staff at the outbreak sites see evidence that the numbers of reported cases and deaths vastly underestimate the magnitude of the outbreak.” It did not provide an estimate of unreported cases.

On Wednesday, the world health agency listed Kenya among countries now at high risk of Ebola transmission given the numerous flights to and from the West African countries already ravaged by the deadly virus. However, Kenya Airways has defied pressure from MPs and other Kenyans to suspend flights into those destinations in order to minimize the risk. WHO said it is teaming up with the affected countries to gather more on-the-ground
intelligence for a coordinated response. “WHO is mapping the outbreak, in great detail, to pinpoint areas of ongoing transmission and locate treatment facilities and supplies,” it said. The new numbers come as health officials are considering the use of experimental treatments and vaccines since no proven treatment or vaccine exists. Ebola spreads through contact with organs and bodily fluids
such as blood, saliva, urine and other secretions of infected people. The Ebola virus causes viral hemorrhagic fever and affects multiple organ systems in the body. Early symptoms include sudden onset of fever, weakness, muscle pain, headaches and a sore throat. They later progress to vomiting, diarrhea, impaired kidney and liver function -and sometimes internal and external bleeding.

World’s first free water firm explains why ‘free is better’ As we continue to hear of innovation and revolution being the foundation for the future, some are always sceptical about products that are different. They choose to live in the past. Although a tiny minority, some Kenyans, still wonder how a quality newspaper, or anything else that one can physically touch, can be free. ‘Free is Better’, an Australian bottled water company, is a prime example of shipping yesterday off to the past where it belongs. By proving that a high quality product can be free, the organisation has broken into the country’s multimillion dollar bottled water industry. Hwi So, a spokesperson for Melbourne-based ‘Free is Better’, told the world why and how some of the best products in the market can simply be handed out with virtually no strings attached. Its business model is not all too different from a street press publication like a free newspapers, So said in an interview with Londonbased radio station, Monocle 24. Instead of charging customers for
water, Free is Better gets profits from advertisers whose brands are sold on the bottles’ labels. “We hand out thousands of bottles through our distribution partners around Australia’s trend-setting hotspots so you can simply pick one up when you’re out,” says a statement from the company. From fashion and boutique retailers, to record stores, galleries and cafes, we’ve got you covered.” Free is Better initially used a business model that was similar to MX, a free newspaper sold in train stations in Australia. Their network has helped them tap into the country’s 600 million dollar (Sh49 billion) bottled water industry. Car company Mini Cooper and global street clothing label company, Rebel 8, are among their paying clients. “They recognise that we are a forward thinking company and we do appeal to Gen Y (Generation Y) so companies that want to tap into that market are the ones that really want to work with us.”

businesswise Better be poor in rich nation than rich in poor one It is better to be poor in a rich country than rich in a poor country, experts have revealed. As the world slowly recovers from the 2007-2008 Global Economic Crisis and Kenya’s middle class begins to expand, it has become obvious that wealthy members of society are only as rich as their countries. “Your standard of living is likely to be higher if you live in a rich country, no matter where you fall on the income distribution,” says Ana Swanson, an Economist for Forbes. Swanson says those living in rich countries have access to more resources than their povertystricken rivals. They can make do with the little they have and still lead a relatively comfortable life. Despite the recent troubles in advanced economies and growth in emerging economies across the world, the gap between rich and poor remains large. Even the poorest of Americans, for example, are richer than 60 per cent of the world’s population based on their purchasing power.

Mobile phone roaming charges within EAC to go in two months East African Community (EAC) Heads of State are set to get rid of roaming charges among the five partner member states in two months. Fred Matiang’i, Information, Communications and Technology (ICT Cabinet Secretary says the presidents of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda will met in Kampala on October 9, 2014 to endorse the waiver of the charges. Matiang’i says talks have been ongoing to get rid of the inter-connectivity fees charged by mobile networks for calls and data originating from partner states. He says the waiver means calling rates in the five EAC member states will drop by 60 per cent starting September 2014. “The Heads of State approved to eliminate roaming charges within the partner member states in a summit in Kigali,” he said in a recent announcement. “This will see a call to Uganda or Rwanda charged like a local one.” Kenya has been pushing for favourable call rates within EAC, with the private sector saying the high calling rates are a barrier to trade. better fortunes: Crayfish harvests are earning farmers up to Sh25,000 per kilogramme.
Institute crayfish project allows farmers to make Sh25,000 per kg A new system of rearing a shrimp-like creature known as Crayfish Artemia on farms in coastal region is giving farmers profits of up to Sh25,000 per kilo of harvest. The project, which is run by the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) and funded by the Belgian Inter-University Council (VLIR), has taken advantage of the available ocean water to rear the animals. Crayfish survives in harsh condi-
tions and is sought after in many parts of the world. Artemia is considered a delicacy worldwide. American Indians term it as delicious, while Iranians use the product to prepare a specialist paste. The pilot project in Magarini District of Coast province has developed 23 ponds for rearing the fish. But KMFRI and the Ministry of Fisheries now envision a roll out of 300 ponds by 2015.
“Kenya stands to make great strides in fish farming in the next few years if it can produce its Artemia locally and make its supply more reliable and affordable,” said then Fisheries Minister Amason Kingi a year ago when the project was still in its budding stages. More than 2,500 tonnes of Artemia are sold every year for use in fish and shellfish hatcheries worldwide. Demand for Artemia cysts
cannot, however, be met by the current supply. As a luxury and high quality product, it can fetch as high as Sh20,000 to Sh25,000 per kg in the world market. Due to the huge demand, there is a ready market for Artemia, said the minister. “Once the project picks up, KMFRI with the help of the Ministry of Fisheries Development will extend it to other regions along the Coastal strip,” said project director Dr Johnson Kazungu.

KPN is among the most famous Volkswagen Beetles in Kenya— and maybe the entire East and Central Africa. But the fame did not sprout from nowhere. It is owned by popular Kenyan DJ Adrian Washika. Known only by the first three letters on its number plate (it’s registered as KPN 376), the metallic silver beetle has undergone years of restoration to be the charmer it is. As Adrian’s first car, it perhaps explains the delicate attention he gave it. “I bought it in 2000. I have always loved the VW beetle and once I bought it, I started working on it, just to make it a bit more reliable,” Adrian told XNews. “I first gave it a facelift in 2004, but it was in 2012 that I embarked on a full body restoration, which involved

Among the modifications that went into the car was an upgraded brake system that saw discs installed on the front wheels. The brakes work far better than the original drums. The engine capacity was also enhanced from 1200cc to 1640cc, giving the torque Adrian desired. “I also changed the ignition system to electric, eliminating the original points and condenser system. The manual fuel pump was also replaced with an electric one installed in the front of the car, feeding the dual carburetor system

The interior is mostly stock, but is fitted with seats harvested from a Toyota Starlet and an EMPI trigger gear-shifter. The DJ does not plan to give the car, which came in third in last year’s Concours d’Elegance, more changes. “So far, I am satisfied with it. It drives well and I don’t think I need to add anything else-well, save for a new transmission, which I am still pondering,” he said. As much as Adrian loves KPN, in which he has covered 250Km on a single trip, he does not consider it indispensable, and will easily let it go to someone who gives a good offer. “I can always get another bug and build it. It is a hobby I enjoy. An acceptable offer would be around Sh1.5million,” he said. But the rebuilding bug (no pun intended) that bit him is not one he is willing to shake off any time soon. “I am currently working on a 1961 Karmann Ghia , which should be ready for next year’s Concours d’Elegance and a 1969 Mercedes Benz 250SE, W109 model. I am also looking for the old London cab taxis and would like to custom build one,” he said. His advice to first-time restorers: “If you are working on a restoration project you need to do it once and do it right. Also do not be in a hurry. No proper restoration can last less than 6 months. Do not take shot cuts as most of us like doing with jua kali mechanics, who seem to always want to modify everything as opposed to fitting in an original part.”

First date make-up 1. Focus on the occasion Consider the time and place. Wearing a dark Smokey eye look can make you appear over the top for a brunch at noon yet will turn heads at an evening cocktail. 2. Go for what you know Never try a new look on a first date. Chances are it could go very wrong. Blame it on Murphy’s Law. Same goes for new products. 3. Pick a good powder A good powder will help you look

Looking like the joker, out of a batman movie, will definitely not help your chances of getting to the second date. Crafting the perfect look is easier than it sounds. Here are a number of tips that should help you along the way.
natural and keep your face from shinning bright like a diamond. Use a high quality powder that sets in well with your skin tone. 4. Magnify your lashes Guys like girls with pretty eyes, so go crazy with the mascara. Feel free to wear 23 coats to make your eyes pop. 5. Check your teeth Make one or two stops to the bathroom to make sure you do not have any lipstick on your teeth. 6. Touch up discretely Keep touch ups relegated to ladies’ rooms only. Powdering your nose in front of your date destroys the illusion of “natural” — and can seem a little high-maintenance. Let’s face it, we want the guy to think we rolled out of bed this morning looking all dolled up. Remember, getting your make up right and looking good is more for you than for your date. Looking good will do wonders for your confidence and reveal the beautiful, warm, fun to be with person you are.
Get longer, thicker, darker eyelashes the natural way Long, dark and thick eyelashes have an appeal that makes one’s eyes look gorgeous and that is why mascaras are one of the most adored cosmetics by women. Unfortunately not every woman is blessed with the perfect eyelashes hence the invention of artificial ones. But there are natural ways to get that fabulous fringe. One way is by taking proper care of them. You need to keep your lashes clean and regularly check for eye dandruff. Eye dandruff weakens the lashes leading to falling off. Make sure you take off your makeup and clean your eyes every time before you go to bed. Brush them every time

Day and evening makeup are as different as day and night. Daytime looks are much softer, lighter and subtle. Evening looks on the other hand are darker and sultry. Taking a makeup look from daytime to evening, however, is no science. Just a touch up here and there and you are ready for the night out. Here are a few tips to easily take your day time makeup look to evening. Eyes Use a darker shade of eye shadow to enhance your eyes.

2014/15 English Premier League set to kick off
The Premier League kicks-off this weekend, with all 20 of England’s top-flight teams in action across Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United open the proceedings by hosting Swansea at Old Trafford in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off (12.45pm). Defender Luke Shaw says United will make up for missing out on the Champions League this season by winning the Premier League title. The Sh3.9billion signing from Southampton insists he made the move to Old Trafford to taste success. And despite joining the club on the back of their worst campaign in more than 20 years, he is convinced that under Louis van Gaal they can return to the summit of English football. “You have got to be positive,” said Shaw.
“I have come here to win trophies and it is something everyone wants, not just me. Everyone in that dressing room is looking to do it. We want to win the Premier League. “Obviously there is no Champions League for us this season so the main focus is on the Premier League and we all cannot wait to get started.” Other highlights on Sunday include an appetising clash between Newcastle United and champions Manchester City. Fixtures (Kenyan time)
SATURDAY: Man U v Swansea (3.45pm); Leicester v Everton (6pm); QPR v Hull (6pm); Stoke v Aston Villa (6pm); West Brom v Sunderland (6pm); West Ham v Tottenham (6pm); Arsenal v Crystal Palace (8.30pm). SUNDAY: Liverpool v Southampton (4.30pm); Newcastle v Man City (7pm). MONDAY: Burnley v Chelsea (11pm)

Yego defends title as curtains fall in Morocco Africa Javelin champion Julius Yego successfully defend his title as the African Athletics championships came to a close in Marrakech, Morocco. It was also a good night for Kenya’s Caleb Ndiku who won the 5,000m African crown as Eunice Sum led a sweep of medals in 800m. Patience once again paid off for Yego as he won the top prize in Marrakech with another fifth round throw of 84.72, his season’s best. With far better conditions than the rainy and windy weather when his throw of 79.28m won him gold in Glasgow, the 25-year-old’s four throws were all measured past the 80m mark. “This has been a really good year for me and I hope I can wrap it with a medal at the
continental cup. Marrakech was even better as I have my season best and returning here as African champion will give me the morale to do better,” said Yego, who won his first African title in Benin. He started off at 80.57m and followed it up with the 82.77 heave that by then placed him top of the field of Africa’s best 11 throwers of the day. His fourth round attempt dipped to 81.49 before the final one put the gold beyond his closest challenger Abdelrahman Elsayed of Egypt. The Egyptian’s sixth round effort was his best of the day at 83.59m as Robert Oosthuizen settled for bronze in 77.81m.

The COPA Coca-Cola ladies’ national title will change hands this year after defending champions Kibera Raiders were knocked out at the group stage. Beijing could have secured a slot in the last four had they drawn or beaten Shinyalu Girls, but the Western side were ruthless scoring a goal in either side of halftime in a 2-0 win. Nairobi roads to be closed for Sunday Diamond Run
The much-awaited Nairobi Diamond 10km Run will finally take place on Sunday, August 17th in Nairobi with a number of roads set to be closed during the historic event. Motor vehicle traffic on Mombasa Road bound for the city centre will be diverted to the Jogoo Road at the Lusaka Road roundabout. Uhuru Highway, Haille Selasie Avenue roundabout and the Bunyala Road roundabout will remain closed for the afternoon race that will be run on the wrong side of Mombasa Road, and around the Central Business District CBD, before ending at the Uhuru Park. A statement by JM Kibuga of
the Nairobi county traffic said that there will be maximum security for spectators and runners during the race. “We call upon motorist to abide by rules and roads closure for it will be for a short time. The law enforcers will be alert to deal with rising cases of theft experienced in past races in the city,” Kibuga said. Meanwhile, slightly less than 3, 000 runners of the 5,000 targeted have registered for the race. Organisers have said the race will, for the first time in Kenyan history, have electronic timing system to avoid any form of cheating. Barnabas Korir, Athletics

Kenya Nairobi branch chairman, who is also the race director, said all participants will have electronic transponder chips engraved at the back of their bibs to help in recording their timings as explained by Korir. “This will give more credibility to the athlete’s times.” The race has attracted some of the top athletes, both former and current lead by the celebrated female marathon star, Tegla Loroupe and team Kenya captain at the Beijing Olympics, Wilfred Bungei. Lorupe, a former World record holder, reminded Kenyan media of the need to promote local sports in their coverage.
