Will US drug Truvada finally kill HIV virus? The drug that could end the HIV pandemic has been discovered. Named Truvada, it is reported to prevent HIV infection by blocking the

virus’s ability to reproduce. And although critics have raised concern over its side effects, a leading HIV investigator in US has hailed

the discovery. “It’s a big deal,” said Robert Grant of the University of California, San Francisco. “It’s an opportunity for uninfected

people to proactively protect themselves.” Although the discovery has not been officially made public, preventive medication has

been prescribed for 10, 000 of the 500, 000 Americans who have been identified to be at “high risk” of contacting the virus.

Will Truvada drug finally kill HIV? MONday, AUGUST 18, 2014

From Page 1

Truvada was approved for use in US as a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication in 2012 to help contain the spread of the virus. It is estimated that about 50,000 Americans will develop HIV this year alone. The identification of the 10, 000 people by US Centre for Disease

Control and Prevention (CDC) who are expected to receive the drug seeks to reduce infections. The UN Aids agency mid last month announced that the epidemic which has mostly ravaged the African continent could be brought to an end by 2030. In a report last month, UNAids said there is a chance the disease

can be brought under control in the next decade because infections and deaths related to the virus are reducing. However, the 35 million people around the world who are still living with the virus may have to continue relying on anti-retroviral drugs to fend off adverse effects. Truvada is only for use by people

who are at risk of contracting the virus but are yet to get infected. In Kenya, an estimated 2.3 million are said to be living with the virus, with the national prevalence rate standing at 5.7 per cent. CDC laid out clinical guidelines which say high-risk patients should take a daily pill of the drug and get HIV test every three months.

“Truvada should supplement, not replace, condoms,” it warned. Results from trials in 2012 showed that when participants took the pill every day, the risk of developing HIV was reduced by 92 per cent. Although the pill is expensive, experts say it is nothing compared with the cost of treatment.

US teen Michael Brown was shot 6 times, autopsy shows An autopsy performed on Sunday revealed that Michael Brown, the unarmed teenager who was gunned down in Ferguson, Missouri, US, last week by officer Darren Wilson, was shot six times, including twice on the head. Brown was also shot four times in the right arm. The bullets, Dr Michael M Baden who was assigned by the family to perform an additional autopsy, said were fired into the 18-year-old’s body. The New York Times reports: “One of the bullets entered the top of Mr Brown’s skull, suggesting his head

was bent forward when it struck him and caused a fatal injury, according to Dr Michael M Baden, the former chief medical examiner for the City of New York, who flew to Missouri on Sunday at the family’s request to conduct the separate autopsy. It was likely the last of bullets to hit him, he said. The bullets did not appear to have been shot from very close range because no gunpowder was present on his body. But the determination could change if it turns out that there is gunshot residue on Mr Brown’s clothing, to which Baden did not

have access.” Meanwhile, a state of emergency has been declared in Missouri where riots have been ongoing since the killing. Governor Jay Nixon also implemented a midnight to 5am curfew for the Ferguson area in response to looting that occurred on Friday night following peaceful protests. President Obama also appealed for “peace and calm” in the state. “Now’s the time for healing…Now’s the time for peace and calm on the streets of Ferguson,” Obama said in a televised statement.

Be innovative employment creators, youth told

The youth have been asked to be more innovative in job creation instead of searching for diminishing white collar opportunities. Addressing a three-day investors’ conference at Kenyatta University, ROCCAC Group Director Eugene Abungana said the youth must come up with ideas and seek mentorship to start businesses. Abungana and Humphrey Janji are the co-directors of the ROCCAC Company that is processing and packaging coconut oil and water

into energy drinks for export to Europe. “With my co-founder, we vowed not to be job seekers, but creators. We pitched the idea to investors in this incubator, and they saw its viability. Youth out there must learn from us,” Abungana told X News. He said the business idea they have implemented for more than one year prepares about 100 litres of energy drink per week but has not met the high market demand. They have two employees and

about 10 to 20 casuals but project to increase the number once they acquire larger machines to produce more to meet the high export demand. He said innovation requires one to think hard and not necessarily be bright in academics. “One needs not be a genius. It is only determination to change one’s life through innovation. There are mentors and investors who want to change lives of youth through such initiatives,” the direc-

tor said. The Chandaria Business Innovation & Incubation Centre was started about three years ago to provide financial and human resource to new ideas from students and anybody below 35 years. The young innovators must develop viable ideas to be job creators after implementation. A student, Alex Kibet, who came up with power generation from chicken droppings was employed by General Electric, a US electronic appliances

company. Nicholas Kibet, an innovator of a security system called E-Response system, said the youth have the power to transform their lives. His project of replacing current CCTV surveillance cameras has shown 55 per cent success. His innovation is able to alert home owners or those close to them of intruders via smartphones. Salsy Innovate is another company under the incubation programme.

2-year-old girl killed in Kasarani fire

A two year old girl was last night killed in a fire in Kasarani, Nairobi. Her brother aged seven and sister, three, were injured in the incident. Police say they are yet to know the cause of the fire that broke out in the house before spreading fast. Household goods of unknown value were destroyed in the fire that happened as the mother of the children was away at a nearby shop. Police say residents managed to contain the fire.

Tanker fire kills 6 petrol looters

Six people were burnt to death over the weekend after a tanker from which they were siphoning fuel on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway caught fire. Nakuru County Commandant Francis Kirathe said five died on the spot while the other died in hospital. Another six were rushed to Eldama Ravine District Hospital with severe burns with two later moved to the Rift Valley Provincial Hospital.

Melbourne, Auckland voted the world’s friendliest cities Australia and New Zealand boast the friendliest cities in the world with Melbourne and Auckland jointly taking top honours, according to a new study from the Conde Nast Traveler magazine’s annual Readers’ Choice Survey. The survey ranked Victoria in Canada the friendliest city followed by Charleston in South Carolina (US) in 4th, and Dublin (Ireland) and Sydney (Australia) tied in fifth place. South Africa’s Johannesburg was ranked the most unfriendly. Johannesburg took the bottom spot because, despite being “one of the most beautiful” cities, “safety still remains a serious concern” with one reader calling it “a city of crime and contrasts.”

South Africa didn’t come home empty handed, however. Its coastal city of Cape Town placed eighth on the friendly list, with one reader describing it as “the most amazing place on Earth” thanks to its mix of nature, beaches and mountains. The researchers who did the survey say it was “no surprise readers adore Melbourne,” calling it Australia’s “capital of cool.” Meanwhile, Auckland residents were praised by readers for their “humour” and a view on life that’s “something to aspire to attain.” While Nairobi did not make it to the list, it is ranked 62 out of 70 in a similar survey that lists the best cities in the world to live in.

Electricity prices to drop by 20 per cent

Kenyans will begin enjoying cheaper electricity from next month. Deputy President William Ruto yesterday said electricity prices will go down by 20 per cent from next month following the addition of 280 megawatts to the national grid. “We expect customers’ bills to reflect this by end of September because we are adding more power to the national grid,” he said in Malindi.

He added the government aims at reducing the cost of electricity by 30 per cent by December to spur economic growth. He said energy is key to the economy and that it should be made affordable. “Electricity is important and lowering the cost of energy will enable our industries to produce goods cheaply,” he added. He said the government’s plans to produce an additional 5, 000 mega-

Suspected Al-Shabaab militiamen yesterday kidnapped more than 20 quarry workers in Mandera County but released them several hours later. County Commissioner Alex Nkoyo said they were taken hostage from around midday. The kidnappers who are believed to be from Somalia ambushed a vehicle which was ferrying the workers from Arabia town to Mandera town and drove them towards the Somalia border. “They waylaid a vehicle which was carrying 22 quarry workers to Mandera Town,” Nkoyo said. He said the militants, estimated to be about 25 in number, drove the vehicle toward the adjacent border town of Bulla-Xawa. It is at this border point where the victims were robbed of all their personal effects and later released. This incident came barely days after gunmen believed to be part of the same militia group attacked a road construction site in Fino, Lafey sub-county, in Mandera County and killed a tractor driver. The vehicle was recovered although police are still pursuing the attackers.

What constitutes dowry? In this week’s issue, we look at what in law constitutes dowry, what are void marriages and unlawful marriages. Dowry is defined under Section 2 of the Marriage Act, 2014 to mean any token of stock, goods or money or other property given or promised in consideration of an intended marriage. The law does not restrict one as to what should be given as dowry, neither does it require one to raise millions to pay dowry. Even a token of stoke or whatever sum of money given in consideration of marriage is lawfully considered as dowry. What are void marriages? Marriage as defined in our earlier issue is a voluntary union of a man and a woman whether in polygamous or monogamous union. However, not all unions are under the definition are recognised as are marriages under the law and thus it is important to understand what are void marriages. Section 11(1) of the Marriage Act provides that for what is considered as void marriages, or marriages which are not lawful. And ‘a union is not a marriage if at the time of making of the union if; Either party is below the minimum age for marriage, Parties are within the prohibited relationship (if the union is not between a man and a woman). Either party is incompetent to marry by reason of a subsisting marriage. This is where a party had earlier entered into a marriage which is considered monogamous marriage i.e. Christian, Hindu and Civil marriages). The consent of either party has not been freely given. This is where the party who purports to give the consent, the consent was influenced by coercion or fraud, is mistaken as to the nature or purport of the marriage ceremony or is suffering from any mental condition, or is intoxicated, or is under the influence of drugs, so as not to appreciate the nature or purport of the marriage ceremony. Either party is absent from the marriage ceremony. Both parties knowingly and willfully permit a person who is not authorised to do so to celebrate the union. Either party is mistaken

KQ Monrovia, Freetown flight ban to last 6 months The government’s order to suspend flight to and from both Sierra Leone and Liberia because of the ongoing Ebola outbreak may take six months before it is lifted. This is after an estimation by Medical charity Medicins Sans Frontiers (MSF) said the outbreak of the epidemic in West Africa will take at least six months to bring under control. MSF President Joanne Liu said the situation is deteriorating

faster that the doctors can respond to. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also called for “extraordinary measures” to curb the outbreak which is “highly underestimated.” Kenya Airways finally yielded to pressure to suspend flights to the two West African destinations. The suspension starts tomorrow. The airline will continue

operating flights to Nigeria and Ghana but resumption of flights to Monrovia and Free Town may wait until the epidemic is brought under control. The government announced measures that will deny entry, or transit to passengers who have passed through Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia into Kenya. Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said only

health professionals and Kenyan citizens returning home from those countries will be the exceptions although they will have to undergo extensive screening and close monitoring. Ebola has infected at least 2,127 people in Nigeria, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since the outbreak began this year, 1,145 of the of who have died. “The outbreak is expected to continue for some time,” WHO

said in a statement on Friday. Kenya has had five suspected ebola cases which have all tested negative. If the ban on the flight take the six months, the airline could face a nightmare given its seven flights a week to the two cities account for 16 per cent of its total West African flights. West Africa is Kenya Airways main flight route where it flies 44 times to some 10 cities in a week.

Lobby: KDF Somalia pullout won’t stop terror An independent security group has said the withdrawal of Kenyan troops from Somalia is unlikely to halt terror attacks in the country. Think Security Africa (TSA) says militants have already entrenched themselves into Kenya and that KDF’s presence in Somalia is key for managing vital information on the Al-Shabaab. “Exiting Somalia at this time may deprive Kenya’s national security managers of vital information required to protect Kenya’s domestic and regional interests,” notes the reports released last week.

Religion frustrates drive against Ebola

Religious leaders in Liberia are convinced that the Ebola virus is a plague unleashed by God to punish ‘immoral acts’ like homosexuality. Various church leaders of the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) reportedly attended a meeting to discuss “a spiritual response” to the outbreak which has killed more than 1,000 people in West Africa. A statement detailing the resolution summarised: “Liberians

have to pray and seek God’s forgiveness over the corruption and immoral acts (such as homosexualism, e.t.c) that continue to penetrate our society. As Christians, we must repent and seek God’s forgiveness.” Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf announced a 90-day state of emergency in the country, warning that ‘ignorance and poverty, as well as entrenched religious and

cultural practices’ is worsening the epidemic. She also called for three days of fasting and prayer “to seek God’s mercy”. People in Liberia and even Sierra Leone continue to fill churches to seek deliverance from the deadly outbreak defying official warnings to avoid public gatherings. Despite the warnings, people flocked to sing and pray at churches in Liberia’s capital Monrovia.

Events you must attend this week

Video game sales gather momentum ADDICTED TO THRILL: Gamers at Extreme Gaming Zone, a local video game facility.

As Kenya records impressive internet literacy and penetration, a new crop of youthful tech savvy Kenyans are positioning themselves to reap from the multi-billion dollar trade. The local gaming scene is gaining a tremendous following and experts say it is bound to get bigger. Nathan Masyuko, Chief Executive at NexGen Ltd, a video gaming and computer business, predicts that there will be high-end, locally developed games in five years. He also predicts higher collaboration with established international companies. Masyuko says

he plans to taking the company to the heights of video game giant, Electronic Arts. The US publisher of famous video games like Battlefield, FIFA, Crysis series, Need for Speed and The Sims, raked in revenues of over $4 billion (Sh352 billion) in 2011-12 financial year alone. Although the country is yet to break even in the sector, baby steps by daring entrepreneurs are finally paying off. UN telecommunication agency, ITU, in one of its articles pointed to a trend in local gaming which is bound to succeed

compared with the rest of Africa. “Kenya is one of Africa’s largest midscale markets and is a bellwether in terms of technology adoption. What happens in Kenya will start to happen elsewhere,” said ITU. Global surveys show people spend about three billion hours per week playing online games, a further incentive for game developers. Masyuko says PC games, X box and PlayStation games are on unprecedented demand, a trend they have noticed and are angling to tap.

Apple bans hazardous chemicals Two chemicals have been banned by technology giant Apple from use in the final assembly process at 22 of its iPhone and iPad plants. Benzene and n-Hexane are said to be potentially hazardous. Benzene, a carcinogen, is capable of causing cancer, while n-Hexane can cause nerve damage. The chemicals will no longer be used in cleaning agents or degreasers at the facilities, the firm said. “We’ve updated our tight restrictions on benzene and n-hexane to explicitly prohibit their use in final assembly processes,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s environmental director. In a statement, Jackson said the company have made investigations into questions of whether the chemicals were used at its factories. There was no evidence of workers’ health being put at

citywallet Dairy products the most costly food items in Kenya Dairy products make the single largest food expenditure item across all income classes in Kenya. A study by researcher Paul Gamba and analysts from Egerton University has revealed that the average Nairobi household spends about Sh1,211 on dairy products every month. Among the poorest households, spending on the products falls to a low of Sh596. Among the wealthiest, the figure reaches Sh2,127. “The poorest households spend an average of Sh20 per day on dairy products,” says Gamba. “Average households spend Sh40 while the wealthiest spends Sh71 per day on milk and dairy products.” Gamba says market for the products in Nairobi is dominated by fluid milk. In more developed countries, the bulk of dairy products are taken in other forms.

Coffee yields boosted by banana intercropping Farmers in Kericho are growing bananas with coffee, a practice that is raising their coffee yields. The new innovation comes at a time when high temperatures are killing coffee plants and are projected to rise between three to four degrees within the next decade. The farmers report that the bark from banana trees is serving as fertiliser for the coffee, while the leaves shade the coffee from the bright sun. Meanwhile, the bananas feed their families while they wait to harvest the coffee. At the same time, scientists from the Consortium for Improving Agriculture-based Livelihoods in Africa say the permanent nature of the banana and coffee canopy and root systems is strongly reducing soil erosion in hilly regions. According to Laurence Jassonge, a Systems Scientist for the Consortium, their research showed that in the Arabica coffee-growing regions, annual returns per hectare averaged Sh391, 000 for coffee and bananas grown together, compared with up to Sh208, 000 for bananas and coffee grown separately. This is an increase of almost 87 per cent.

Desperate oil firm asks Putin for Sh3 trillion loan Russia’s state-controlled oil company, Rosneft has asked the President, Vladimir Putin for a $42 billion (Sh3.7 trillion) loan, as it feels the impact of Western sanctions. The Russian government said it will consider the request from Igor Sechin, Head of Rosneft, in the next two weeks. Sanctions on Russia have limited Rosneft’s ability to raise funds so the desperate energy giant has requested the money from the country’s National Wealth Fund, which finances state pensions. The United States imposed sanctions on Rosneft and Novatek, Russia’s second-largest gas producer, last month. The US and EU have also restricted sales of technology to the Russian oil industry. This may be a critical hit to the country since Russia’s exports are almost all raw materials and about 60 per cent of these are energy products. David Spencer-Percival, Chief Executive of international energy recruitment firm, Spencer Ogden, said that this is “the clearest sign yet that the Western sanctions are biting hard.” “Given the West’s reliance on the Russian energy industry, it is vital governments across Europe reassess their self-sufficiency.”

FARMING INTELLIGENCE: Intercropping bananas with coffee has been shown to increase coffee yields.

Jassonge, said in the Robusta-growing areas, annual returns per acre averaged Sh161, 000 for those growing coffee and bananas. Farmers earned up to Sh113, 000 when they grew the two crops separately in the same amount of

space. Since coffee yields were essentially the same in both systems, the extra revenues came from adding the banana plants. Scientists therefore recommend planting two coffee trees for each banana plant.

Around the world, scientists and farmers are scrambling to develop crops that not only are more resilient to erratic weather, but also yield more food per plot of land, to match population growth.food security.

EU bans horticultural imports from 5,000 Kenyan farmers The European Union has refused to take in exports from more than 5,000 horticulture farmers and 11 horticulture firms. The move comes one and a half months before a set deadline by the EU for Kenya to have fully contained the problem after local producers and exporters were accused of shipping produce that has high leaves of maximum residuals limits (MRLs) to the EU. New trading requirements by the EU expressively ban products with high levels of MRL. “We have been given a deadline of September 30 to fully comply with the MRL rules, otherwise, we will be locked out of the market, which would be a huge loss to the entire economy,” said Horticulture Competent Authority Structure (HCAS) Chairman, Dr James Onsando. ‘National Dialogue’ The clamour for national dialogue is likely to hurt the strength of the shilling that received a boost after Kenya secured the Euro bond. Interestingly, those calling for or against do not feel the pain when poor economy bites our pockets. Stoke the fires with lace that lingerie

Bridezilla Syndrome

Girls always have a picture in their mind about that special day. They have been dreaming since they were old enough of their wedding dress, the veil down to the kind of flowers they want to be holding as they walk towards their ‘prince charming.’ They have it all planned out to last detail, never mind that there is no Mr Right in the picture. The wedding in every girl’s mind is one which people will still be talking about years later. But a wedding can be remembered for the wrong reasons especially if the bride was difficult and was a bridezilla. Bridezilla has been said to be a bridal epidemic. A bridezilla, as described by Oxford dictionary, is a woman whose behaviour in planning the details of her wedding is regarded as obsessive or intolerably demanding. The bridezillas terrorize their bridal party and family members, make demands on their wedding guests all the while breaking rules of etiquette to ensure that all attention is on them. In a world where weddings have to be beautiful and perfect, stress levels are high and tempers run thus making it hard to avoid being a bridezilla. Wedding planning can be stressful and draining and at times it demands one to be firm. When under stress, nobody is at their best. There are various factors that come into play to push the bride into bridezilla territories. Weddings are an expensive affair and many couples sometimes end up going beyond their budget and getting into debt just to have a perfect wedding. Making sure that things go right becomes more important than people’s feelings.

HANDS ON: A bride who wants to control all aspects of her wedding can cause problems.

When it comes to the best lingerie types, lace is always the winner. Lace lingerie is an old fashioned piece of clothing; it was there in the 19th century and it still remains very classy. It lets a woman be naked without really being naked; it looks good on a woman and shows skin at the same time. It is usually associated with the Victoria’s Secrets models, who usually showcase the latest and sexiest in the underwear industry thus making them the most expensive innerwear and a must-have. Wearing lace lingerie is like giving a preview of what is to come and that is why most women will not wear them every day, but only on days they think are looking forward to sex romp even though they will often complain that lace lingerie is uncomfortable given that it is tight. Lace lingerie should not be tight in fact it is more comfortable than the regular underwear. One needs to find the perfect size for their specific body type. Note that not all lace lingerie comes in size zero. So do not squeeze yourself into one. They also always make you look and feel good.

The talk you need to have with your bridesmaids

barenecessities

maidsaffair

The talk you need to have with your bridesmaids You are getting married! You have chosen your bridesmaids and you’ve asked them to do the honours and stand with you on your big day. However, there are things you need to discuss with your maids regarding the costs they will meet and the ones if any, you will take care of. The dresses your maids will wear is an important matter. As much as it is your wedding, do not put your maids in ugly dresses. This

may cause friction in your friendship and you may lose them. Discuss with them the vision of the dress you want them to wear. Tell them the kind of dress you want, length, colour or style and see what they have to say about it. Address the issues they are uncomfortable with early in the preparations. Also discuss the accessories you want to go with the dress and what you do not want to see. Hair is another important aspect you need to discuss. Would you want them in the

same hairstyle or would you let them have different hair to showcase their individuality? You need to take into account that your bridesmaids are different and may prefer hairstyles that flatter their face shape. Most bridal make-up packages include make-up for the maids to so maybe you could cover that and they could take care of the rest. Remember the bridesmaids should not upstage you. True, they should look great and nice, but it is your day, remember.

Thank you cards are a vital wedding etiquette item The thank you card is usually the most forgotten part when it comes to wedding etiquette. Most couples actually never send them after the wedding, but it is one of the most important details because it lets the guests know how appreciative and grateful you are that they shared in your wonderful event. It

assures the friends and family that their token of love and support was noticed. In sending thank you cards, there is a certain thank you card etiquette one should keep in mind. First of all, never wait more than three months to send one, do not keep people guessing whether you got their gift or if it got lost in

the ceremony or in the mail. Secondly, the thank you notes are not only for guests who gave gifts even those who did not, let them know that their presence in the wedding ceremony was appreciated. Also say thank you to those who provided service on the special day: the caterers, flowers vendors and even the chauffeurs.

Also, be specific about the gift when expressing gratitude and tell them how you will use the gift, this will make them feel appreciated more. Although for monetary gifts, do not mention the amount they gave to you, it will seem rude. You may also choose to attach a photo that was taken with you and the attendee to give it a personal touch.

Don’t search for Mr Perfect; he’s not there “He is not perfect, you are not either and the two of you will never be perfect. But if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can…”- This is one of the most famous quotes of the legendary Bob Marley. Everyone has a list which contains things they want to find in a man or woman. They will embark on finding that perfect someone they believe will fulfil their dreams, but no one is perfect. No one will meet every requirement on the list. As perfect as a man may seem, he is still human. Perfect on paper does not always mean that he is the perfect lover. A man who always remembers his lover’s birthdays, never forgets their anniversaries, puts her first over sports and still remembers their first kiss, does not exist and if there is

touchspot Touch spot: how do you know you are in a long-term relationship?

one then he is trying to hide a side of himself or something from his partner. He could be cheating. Someone who cheats needs to make sure they never get caught and so they will remember even the tiniest of details so that when they are telling a lie, they tell it convincingly. If a man is interested in a woman, and their connection is genuine, he will not need to overcompensate. The same case applies to women. If she never gets jealous, if she does not want your undivided attention all the time (which woman does not love attention?), if she admits that she is wrong-when she is-and does not get angry when you forget an unnecessary anniversary like the first time they held hands, she is also hiding something or someone from their partner.

tellmeabouit

How do I break it without betraying my girlfriend? My friend is cheating on her boyfriend who also happens to be a good friend of mine. I am often forced to lie to him just to cover up for her but I feel guilty. She made me swear to secrecy. I’m so scared I might lose him as a friend when he finds out that I kept it from him. He has been there for me through tough times when no

one else wanted to come close to me. He is like a brother to me. On the other hand, I cannot sell out my girlfriend because it will be betrayal. I might lose her friendship and trust too. Is there anything I can do? Reply: Anyone in your position would find it hard to deal with the situation. As much as they are your awesome friends, it is

best to stay out of their affairs. Silence may not make you the best of friends but it will save you trouble that you would rather not get into. You can talk to your friend in a dissuading manner and let her know the awkward position she has put you in. Of course if your guy friend finds out you didn’t give him heads up he will be

pissed off. But he will eventually get over it. If he is sensible enough, he will not make you his emotional punching bag. He will realise that it was not in your place to tell him such a thing. But if you are compelled to snitch on your girlfriend, be ready to deal with all the drama that comes with it. You might lose her friendship and trust.

What a man can do a woman can do better

achieveR: Justice Ndung’u crafted and moved a number of rights and justice oriented laws.

The architect of the saying that what a man can do, a woman can do it better may have had Justice Njoki Ndung’u in mind. The seven-judge-bench member of the Supreme Court has shown how educating a girl can shape the society. Born 49 years ago, Justice Ndung’u joined the University of Nairobi for an undergraduate degree in law after Kenya High School. She pursued a Master’s of Law in Human Rights and Civil Liberties from the

University of Leicester, UK. She also holds a diploma in Women’s Human Rights from the World University Services, Austria. As a nominated MP courtesy of the National Rainbow Coalition, Justice Ndung’u crafted and moved a number of rights and justice oriented laws. She authored and campaigned for the Sexual Offences Act, 2006, amendment on Maternity and Paternity Rights in Employment Act, 2007, and Political Parties Act, 2007 that allowed more women participation in politics, among others. As a member of the National Committee of Experts, she participated in drafting the current Constitution. She has served as a State counsel

at the Attorney General’s office, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and as a programme officer at the Institute for Education in Democracy. She also served in the Parliamentary Committee of Defence and Justice and Legal Affairs Committee. Among the numerous accolades she has won includes the 2005 Eve Magazine Woman of the Year Award. She also won the UN Person of the Kenya 2006, Jurist of the Year Award and International Commission of Jurist award. President Mwai Kibaki crowned her an Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS).

There comes a time when dating someone becomes clear that it is not going to be a fling or a by-the-way. It will be something that is bound to last. The man could be introducing you to his parents or her giving you her phone passwords. These are signs that make the intention of a long term relationship clear. “When he lets you keep his hoodie, after a night out with him, then he wants something more,” says Grace Mazini, a 27 year-old hairstylist. “Men have a special connection with hoodies and they do not just give them out. So he gives you and lets you keep it, he wants to keep you around.” Geoffrey Abuka, an accountant, says when a woman finally introduces you to friends, she wants to take the relationship further. “Women tell close friends everything. If she introduces them to you, it means she is not ashamed of you and it is as if she is seeking approval from them.” “If a man is unashamed walking in public holding hands with you that means you are exclusive,” says Doris Njeri, a secretary at a construction firm. “Public display of affection is one thing men do not like… and if he does it with you, it is going to be a long-term relationship.”

Modelling spirit fires up Sandra’s passion Three years ago, Sandra Nditi broke into the limelight as a commercial model, signed with Fuschia Creativity Company. A year later, she bid her agency goodbye and set off on a road to freelance modelling. Nditi loves modelling, which she attributes to the great opportunities that have come her way. “Modelling is fun because you get to mingle with diverse classes of people.” Her natural beauty and wit have attracted deals and have seen her grace newspaper pages regularly. In

2013, Sandra was crowned Mombasa’s model of the year. But she almost fell off the radar, when she relocated to Nairobi to advance her career. She blames this on rogue promoters who prey on young girls in pursuit of building their professions. “Nowadays, many promoters demand sexual favours before they strike a deal with you,” she revealed to XNews. This, she says, has crippled many models’ careers leaving them disillusioned and wasted.

speakstome

However, she has refused to let this come in the way of her career. She is now fully back on the drill and aspires to become a well branded model. Sandra hopes to work with supermodels like Ajuma Nasenyana, who has strutted the runway for prestigious labels like Victoria’s Secret. The 25-year-old is a Jill of all trades. She is a business lady and recently joined the film industry.

Star Juliani and his mop of dreadlocks

Gospel rapper Juliani is arguably one of the best musicians in the country. The rapper, whose real name is Julius Owino is known for his lyrical prowess in hip-hop music. He took the music industry by storm back in 2008 with the release of his album first ‘Mtaa Mentality’, which won him the award of the Kisima Artist of the year. His music is identifiable for its issue-based message that empowers people to get BROTHERS IN MUSIC: Country muscians the Bellamy Brothers.

Bellamy Brothers remind us that love is the fuel of life Nature gives us sunshine as a reminder that there is another good side of life in our deepest worries. The Bellamy Brothers, in their song Let Your Love Flow, liken love to a free feeling that is continuously flows day and night. But the sunshine is a bright signal of the bold season of expressing love. It must thrill you out to express the love to those who have feelings for you too. The love in you must shine for you to steal a glimpse of those you love next door, while the moonlight watches.

For this reason, love is not limited or bound. Let it hover like the bird of the sky. And drive you to rejuvenation; and the sweet warm feeling of love will not be held back; they will punch your face with happiness. Love glows, flows, and grows from smallest to the biggest of dreams. In wonderment, you will shine from the top of the world. Then you will understand the reason for the big season of love, there is no need of worries all times because there is a bright side of life too.

CHIC: Model Sandra Nditi was named Mombasa’s Model of the year in 2013.

involved with issues affecting the society, however he is identifiable by his dreadlocks. Juliani’s fans have seen his dread locks grow in the over five years that he has been in the music industry; from the time when they just baby locks to now when they are flowing past his shoulders. They have since become his trademark look. During his energetic performances in concerts, he is fond of shaking them something that drives the crowd wild.

toptrack Elani’s Barua still rocking the charts

Elani’s latest single, Barua ya Dunia, which is also the name of their album is one of the trending songs on airwaves. Barua ya dunia cuts out as soft ballad that portrays the cry of an afflicted person. The song highlights all kinds of abuse present in relationships, work places and other social grounds.

In the video, there is the selfish guy who physically violates his girlfriend because of his wealth. A husband incessantly mistreats his wife because of their childless marriage only to find out he is the problem. Then there is the boss who sexually harasses his employee but later on tables turn and he’s forced to seek a job from her.

Elani seems to never go wrong each time they hit the mic. With their amazing voices strutting the lyrics in Swahili, the intense message of karma is perfectly laid out. This trio keeps on rising by virtue of their innate beautiful vocals. By steering their act away from the usually sexualized mode of performance, Elani have grown to become Kenya’s darling band. Through this song, Elani let out an inspiration and even called upon those going through tough times to anonymously share their pain on their Facebook page. Fans responded massively and opened up. They have taken a road that most musicians rarely go down. They have shown great value for their fans and irrefutably become the favourite of them all.

AFC, Tusker settle for barren draw AFC Leopards failed in their pursuit for a rare double against Tusker as the two settled for a barren draw at Kasarani stadium on Sunday. Leopards had a slight edge but were let down by Jacob Keli and Noah Wafula’s woeful finishing. Ingwe beat the brewers by a solitary goal in the first leg of the Kenyan Premier League. Leopards coach Pieter De Jongh was happy over his team’s performance but took a swipe at Tusker’s approach to the tie. “We played a beautiful game and I must commend my players for their effort. Our only shorting coming was not scoring a goal against a team

that clearly want nothing more than not losing the match,” the Dutchman said. His opposite number Francis Kimanzi was more diplomatic. “This was bound to be a tough match given Leopards’ recent form. All the same I am satisfied with today’s result,” he said. Tusker will remain on top of the log with 40 points from 22 matches, two more than reigning champions Gor Mahia who are set to return to local action from the disastrous Cecafa Club Championship campaign with two matches in hand. In an earlier match at Kasarani, KCB just fell short

of staging perhaps the most remarkable turnaround this season when they rallied from three goals down to fall to Thika United 3-2. In Muhoroni, strugglers City Stars’s survival chances were jolted by host Muhoroni Youth who hit them 1-0. Mike Khaludi’s goal from the penalty spot inside the opening minute of the game was all that separated the two teams. Bolt cruised to victory on a four-lane standard running track set up on Leme beach. The Jamaican easily beat Mark Lewis-Francis of Britain, Jefferson Liberato Lucindo of Brazil and Wallace Spearmon of US. Downplaying his win, Bolt said he felt “sluggish” and that his final time was com-

Brazilian Rosangela Santos won the women’s race in 11.33 seconds, beating Jamaican Schillonie Calvert and three-time Olympic medallist Carmelita Jeter of US. Jeter holds the second-fastest time in history with 10.64. Fellow American Cleo VanBuren finished fourth.

CHAMPIONS!: Coach Gideon Olando (in cap) celebrates with his Kitale Youth team after the youngsters beat Kisumu Lakers 5-4 on post-match penalties at the City Stadium to win the Under-15s national Copa Coca-Cola title on Saturday.

MONDAY, AUGUST 18, 2014

Kitale, Shinyalu rule national Copa finals Woeful Gor exit Kagame Cup without a win Coach Bobby Williamson has blamed the exit of players for Gor Mahia’s early exit from the Cecafa Kagame Cup. The Kenyan champions went out without a win and Williamson said the exit of key players contributed to the dismal showing in the tournament they were they

were tipped to shine and challenge for the crown. Gor finished bottom of Group B after losing to KCCA of Uganda and Burundi’s Atletico, and drawing with APR and Telecom to with only two points from four matches. “We have been through tough times and the exit of influential

players like Teddy (Athony), Rama (Salim) and Kevin (Omondi) affected us. “We were unlucky too and you could see that a natural scorer like Sserunkuma (Dan) could not convert the many chances we had here.” The team returs home today and will shift their attention back to KPL duty.

It was a jubilation in end for coach Gideon Olando as his exciting Kitale Youth side beat all odds to win the 2014 Coca-Cola under-15 national champions on Saturday. Kitale overcame Kisumu Lakers 5-4 on post-match penalties while Shinyalu Girls also triumphed via penalty shoot outs beating Cherangany Starlets 4-2. “Nobody gave us a chance of qualifying form Rift Valley let alone winning the national title. I am indeed a happy person, all this is the result of a lot of work from juniors and hardworking technical bench,” he said. “Going undefeated ever since the championships began in April is no mean achievement for us.” The boys’ final was a tightly contested affair with both teams showing they deserved to be playing the finals before Kitale emerged triumphant. Kitale who beat the Lakeside outfit 2-0 in their Group ‘A’

clash earlier in the week were quick off the blocks taking the lead inside two minutes, Eric Wafula slicing open the Lakers’ defence before slotting home through the legs of Eric Ochieng in Kisumu goal. Lakers reasserted themselves thereafter putting the Rift outfit under unrelenting pressure. They almost drew a goal back when Jack Odhiambo was put through but Kitale keeper John Musumba was quick off his line to save. With 10 minutes on the clock, Lakers who lost last year’s final to JMJ Academy, found the equalizer through Benson Omalla who fire home from outside the box. Both teams tightened their backline thereafter but it was Lakers who threatened more. Twice, Omalla found himself in a good position but was thwarted by Musumba as the match ended 1-1 at half time. Isaiah Opiyo’s reliable skipper Frankline Otieno stepped up first to easily

drill home. Musumba took Kitale’s first and almost lost but Erick Ochieng’s hands were too weak to hold onto the ball. Kisumu’s Collins Omondi, Jack Odhiambo and Basil Ochieng converted successfully and so did Charles Chege, Ken Mwendwa and Rashid Issa for Kitale. Marvin Omondi saw his penalty saved by Musumba giving Brian Bahati the chance to score and win Kitale the title. The lanky midfielder delivered for Gideon Olando’s men leaving Ochieng stranded and sending Kitale into celebration while Lakers were left to lick their wounds after losing a second successive final. The winners went home with Sh500, 000 each with the runners up pocketing Sh200, 000. JMJ Academy who beat Murhanda 3-2 in the boys’ third place playoff were awarded Sh100,000 alongside Nyanza’s Nyamira Girls who beat Kirindara .

United to spend big on Di Maria Man United are willing to spend up to Sh14.6billion to land Real Madrid midfielder Angel Di Maria. Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is said to have told Chief Executive Ed Woodward to do all he can to bring winger Di Maria to the club in the wake of United’s 2-1 Premier League loss to Swansea at Old Trafford in Saturday’s season opener. The Dutchman is said to be desperate to bolster his squad with some world-class players before the closure of the summer transfer window at the end of August. Luis Enrique, however, insists he does not wish to let Dani Alves leave in the immediate future and refused to comment on Douglas. “I’ve said this several times. I will have opportunities to meet with anyone,” he said. “I don’t comment on players who are not here.” The former midfielder also explained that he allowed Gerard Deulofeu to join Sevilla on loan to continue his development and has challenged him to prove his deserves a place at Camp Nou in future.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted his side needs to combat teams that deploy defensive tactics to nullify their attacking threat if they are to mount a successful challenge for this season’s Premier League title. “We’ve been working on playing against a team who are defensive, trying to close every road to goal. We have to improve in terms of character, but we need more quality,” Mourinho said ahead of his side’s Premier League opener at Burnley tonight. Mourinho has proved himself to be a master of diluting attack minded sides with his own tactical acumen in the last decade, but he has warned his team that they need to have an answer to teams who use similar tactics against them.
