Deadly mix of poison, drinks in popular pubs By Queen Munguti

Man admits to defiling 100 corpses

When a young man died in Embakasi a month ago, residents took it as part of the growing statistics of victims of lethal brews. But beneath Victor Alfayo’s death lay a serious case of possible alcohol poisoning. Residents of Embakasi say it has become all too common to hear stories of people who die immediately they take brews. “It is not the first case that we have heard of. It is more like a common thing here,” says Jane Omwami, a resident. X News decided to dig into the story behind the deaths and we soon realised that most victims died after taking drinks laced with poison. The perpetrators of the criminal activities use sulphuric acid often stolen from car batteries, which are secretly added to drinks as innocent revellers enjoy themselves in wild dances or have fun at restaurants.

Mixing poison, drinks in pubs TUESday, AUGUST 19, 2014

From Page 1 Victor is believed to have suffered this kind of poisoning as he thought he was enjoying drinks with friends. “He took only one sip,” says Omwami. “Just one before he started vomiting and coughing furiously. The following day he was rushed to hospital where he died after two weeks.” Doctors said they were unable to treat his infection. “Sulphuric is a reactive acid,” says

Dr Daniel Kilenge. “This means when it comes into contact with another material, it will corrode. When ingested, it causes respiratory disorders causing one to vomit which one should not do because it will cause additional burns especially in the mouth.” “It needs to be treated immediately. If one waits even for five minutes, the danger increases,” says Dr Kilenge, a toxicology expert.

Victor’s friends identified the person who poisoned him before he was arrested by police but was shot dead as he tried to flee. Police have since been arresting those they find in possession of sulphuric acid or car batteries without a satisfactory explanation. But the acid is not only used in poisoning people to death. Women in the area are said to be notorious in using it to exert revenge especially

in relationship disputes. “If you steal or are suspected to be involved with someone’s boyfriend or husband,” says Omwami, “you risk your face being ruined with the acid. The offended girlfriend or wife will pour acid on your face and make sure no man will ever look at you again.” When sulphuric acid comes into contact with any part of the body, it quickly penetrates the skin, causing

corrosion. “Sulphuric acid is capable of corroding hard metal, so you can imagine what it can do to the skin,” says Dr Kilenge. “It not only corrodes the skin; it will also cause the rapid destruction of tissue leading to severe burns that are most likely untreatable. The burns can also give rise to the possibility of secondary problems such as infections because they are left exposed.”

Cheers as first home-made jet takes to Pretoria skies

The first wholly built African aircraft successfully made a maiden take-off in Pretoria, South Africa, last week. The aircraft, Paramount Group’s Advanced HighPerformance Reconnaissance Light Aircraft (AHRLAC), is a “revolutionary new Africandesigned and developed aircraft”, their website says. “It is destined for a significant role in a wide range of

military, policing and civilian tasks around the world. The two-crew aircraft can carry out a wide range of operations. The tasks include surveillance, policing, border/ coastal patrol and antismuggling. It can also be used in armed patrol and counterinsurgency operations, disaster relief, emergency supply to remote areas and intelligence gathering.”

More than 60 engineers and technicians were involved in the development, Paramount says. Some 98 per cent of the prototype’s 6,000 parts were designed and produced locally. “AHRLAC will enable developing countries and advanced nations strengthen and diversify security infrastructure,” says Ivor Ichikowitz, Paramount Group Executive Chairperson.

Govt moves to end era of Mid-East jobs pain The era of dubious agents fleecing Kenyans over fake job opportunities in the Arab world could come to an end by next year. This follows an announcement by the government on Monday that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will start employing Kenyans directly to work in Dubai. Cabinet Secretary for Foreign

Affairs and International Trade Amina Mohamed said the Middle East nation will upgrade its mission in Nairobi to the largest in Africa to give it additional capacity for services like job recruitment. The move means employers in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ajman and Fujairah, all of which fall under UAE, will channel their job notices to the

consulate. This will effectively lock out countless agents who have been milking Kenyans at the pretext of finding jobs for them in the Middle East at a fee. Ambassador Mohamed said the upgrade will also allow for faster processing of visas and work permits. “The consulate will seek to open up

job opportunities for Kenyans in the UAE by allowing employers to come and directly recruit from here,” she said. Many Kenyans who have been hire by the agents have often returned with harrowing tales on how they were mistreated and forced to work without pay in Arab-speaking nations, with Saudi Arabia cited as the

most notorious. They are often promised of white collar jobs only to end up as domestic workers. But the government is working round the clock to seal all loopholes used by the agents. Amina said other nations like Qatar have signed deals with the government to offer jobs to Kenyans without passing through agents.

Police shoot suspected thug in Kayole A suspected thug was last night shot dead and a homemade gun recovered from him in a botched robbery in Kayole, Nairobi. Police say the suspect was in the company of three others and had been attacking and robbing residents. A couple had by then been robbed of their valuables before they raised alarm. Police say the other gunmen managed to escape on foot and efforts to get them are ongoing.

Armed gang raids police post in Garissa An armed gang raided Bodhai police station in Garisa county near the border with Lamu county and burnt down a police vehicle in a fresh attack. Many police officers are missing after the attack that has been linked to Somalia’s Al-Shabaab militia. Police in the area say the motive of the attack is yet to be clear but many officers say it could be the work of the same gang behind the attacks of the last three months.

Study shows Africans have no faith in their justice systems Africans are losing faith in their courts, a new survey by research group, Gallup has revealed. The study, released just as the US-Africa Leaders’ Summit was drawing to a close in Washington DC early this month, shows that less than half of sub-Saharan Africans (48 per cent) express confidence in their judicial systems. This is down from a high of 55 per cent in 2010, and its the second consecutive year that confidence in judicial systems and courts remains lower than 50 per cent across Africa. Malawi citizens had the most faith in their system, with 69 per cent of those surveyed stating so. The independence of Malawi’s courts was on full display this past May after the Malawi High Court rejected sitting President,

Joyce Banda’s call to put an end to presidential elections, paving the way for the democratic handover of power to opposition candidate, Peter Mutharika. In the survey, Senegal came second, Burkina Faso, third, Niger fourth, Botswana fifth and Kenya sixth with 61 per cent of the population confident in the court’s ability to carry out its duties. South Africa was seventh with a close 60 per cent. Congo came in last as only 22 per cent trust their courts. “While strengthening the rule of law is widely viewed as a high priority for many sub-Saharan African countries, Africans’ views of their own judicial systems are no worse than other regions,” explains Jay Loschky, a researcher on behalf of Gallup.

FB runs tests of satirical content

Facebook is testing a new feature that warns users of satirical content posted from sites like the Onion. Stories posted in users’ feeds are being tagged as “Satire” in an apparent move to prevent them being mistaken for real news stories. Satirical stories have provoked confusion and angry comments from social media users.

FAIRNESS: Students go through a registration exercise. The universities and colleges placment body said affirmative action was used in the recently concluded placement exercise.

Affirmative action was used in the just concluded university and college placement exercise to cater for gender parity and the physically challenged students. Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service CEO John Muraguri has said students with disabilities were given priority in the affirmative action if they showed academic ability. “Student with physical disabilities were, in general selected by lowering the cut off points by three. Those with visual and ear problems, but scored C+ were placed,” Muraguri told a morning TV show. Muraguri said in this year’s exercise of the affirmative action, about 72 ear and eye impaired scholars secured places. He said the action was also applied in selection of courses to ensure gender parity. “It is evident that few female students go for technology,

engineering, among other technical courses. Less of their male counterpart will apply for hospitality or nursing. Applying the two-thirds rule made us lower points for the affected gender to ensure balance,” Muraguri said. KUCCPS also lowered qualifications for students from marginalised areas to ensure fairness in access to education. A record 72, 330 students were selected countrywide to join public universities and college from amongst candidates who sat last year’s KCSE examination. Some 56,937 learners who attained B plain for males and B- for females were selected to join public universities while the other 15, 393 who scored a C+ and above, but did not make the university cut were placed in middle-level colleges like Kenya Medical Training College and teachers training colleges to pursue diploma courses.

Consumer lobby in court to force ban of KQ flights to Nigeria The Consumers Federation of Kenya (Cofek) now wants Kenya Airways forced to suspend flights to all West African countries hit by the Ebola outbreak. The airline last week suspended flights to Liberia and Sierra Leone because of

the epidemic although they said flight operations will continue in Nigeria. The virus broke in Guinea andn spread to Liberia and Seria Leone. Ghana and Nigeria are the other countries where the virus has already spread to But Cofek yesterday

2,400 Kenyans on Standard Gauge Railway Project payroll More than 2,400 Kenyans have been hired for the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). Assistant President of China Communications and Construction Company Wen Gang says they also plan to sub-contract about 40 per cent of the project to local companies. During a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Nairobi on Monday, Wen said at its peak, the project will directly employ more than 30,000 Kenyans. He said 87 construction teams from China have so far arrived with over 2,000 pieces

of equipment to ensure the project takes off by September. “We will continue recruiting local people to impart skills and also ensure transfer of technology…. we will also continue engaging local suppliers especially from county governments to maximize on the locals and minimize on the Chinese experts,” he said. He said his company will impart skills and transfer technology to locals to help the country in the manufacture of components for the project. The President commended the company for working

with county governments in implementing the SGR. He said the Government will ensure SGR is completed on time, saying it will also anchor the establishment of the steel industry in Kenya. He said the Jubilee Government attaches great importance to the improvement of infrastructure in its effort to develop the economy. He says the partnership between local and international companies will boost the steel manufacturing industry. “We will always welcome projects that accelerate economic growth to create

JKUAT dances to 20th anniversary celebration

There were celebratory dances at the JKUAT Juja main campus on Monday as stakeholders launched year-long 20th anniversary commemoration to celebrate the achievement of autonomy in 1994. Speakers at the event enumerated gains consolidated by the institution as they recalled the many hurdles the university has overcome to realise the status. In his fond memories of the formative years as a university college, Prof George Eshiwani, who was the founding principal, said the institution had remained alive to its original mission of producing graduates who are innovative, competent and responsible. “Even as we relish the achievements, it is time to chalk new innovative paths in response to emerging socio-economic challenges facing society,” said Eshiwani. Vice Chancellor Prof Mabel Imbuga took the audience through the university’s development path which

started out with less than 3,000 students in 1994. Today the student number has risen to 36,000 spread across three campuses. There are also 10 CBD centres in key towns in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Somaliland. Imbuga lauded the steady support of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Ministry of Education Science and Technology which she said had given JKUAT a competitive edge in implementing its mandate. Mr Junichi Hanai, JICA Kenya Office Senior

Representative, enumerated the agency’s involvement in the setting up of JKUAT. These include staff training and capacity building. “We are committed to undertaking future collaboration with JKUAT, including the implementation of Pan Africa University Institute of Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation,” said Hanai. Chancellor Geoffrey Maloiy urged staff to continue actualising applied research and publish in high impact journals to achieve greater visibility.

Poachers may wipe out African jumbos in 100 years, experts warn Africa’s elephants could be wiped out in the next 100 years, researchers have warned. Experts say the animals have reached a tipping point with more being killed than born. Since 2010, an average of nearly 35,000 elephants have been killed annually across the continent. If the rate continues, the animals face extinction in the next century. In a report published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, lead author George Wittemyer of Colorado State University says: “We are shredding the fabric of elephant society and exterminating populations across the continent.” Illegal trade in elephant tusks has soared in recent years as a kg of ivory selling for thousands of dollars. The high demand is driven by a growing market in Asia. The study adds to concerns by conservationists who have long said the outlook is bleak. Researchers warn that between 2010 and 2013, Africa lost an average of 7 per cent of the entire elephant population each year. Julian Blanc of the Convention on International

Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites), who worked on the study, said: “If this is

sustained, then we will see significant declines over time. In Kenya, up to 100 elephants have been killed this year.”

Gaza residents hope for deal as 24hr ceasefire clock ticks Gaza residents are hoping that negotiators in the conflict between Israel and Palestinian authorities in the city hammer a deal before a new 24-hour ceasefire extension lapses tonight. They today agreed to extend the current Gaza cease-fire by 24 hours in a bid to try and strike a deal following the lapse of a five day truce agreed earlier. Both Israeli and Palestinian officials confirmed

the new extenstion. The extension is expected to give negotiators more time to talk about the issues for a lasting peace in Gaza. However, a hardline stance could derail any meaningful progress. “There hasn’t been any progress at all,” Azzam al-Ahmed, the lead Palestinian negotiator, told reporters. Israeli and Palestinian media had reported Monday afternoon that a deal was set to

be signed. Israel’s Channel 10, quoting Palestinian sources, said the agreement would include the easing of Gaza border restrictions and the enlargement of a fishing zone off the Gaza coast. Bigger issues -- including demilitarization, the building of a seaport, the release of Palestinian prisoners and the return of the bodies of two Israeli soldiers -- will be discussed at fresh talks in a

month’s time, Channel 10 said. Palestinian news agency Ma’an reported that Egyptian consultants were drawing up the documents and that Israel’s delegation had left Cairo to discuss the deal with Israel’s Cabinet. “We hope that every minute in the next 24 hours will be used so we can reach an agreement or the cycle of violence will continue,” alAhmed said. Communicating through Egyptian

intermediaries, Israel and the Palestinians have been trying to resolve, in days, issues that have smoldered for decades. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said their negotiators had been “instructed to insist firmly on Israel’s security needs” adding that Israel was “prepared for any scenario,” with the Israel Defense Forces ready “for a very firm action if fire is resumed.”

Unrest persists in US town over teen’s shooting An evening of peaceful protests devolved into another night of chaos as gunfire, tear gas and Molotov cocktails flew through Ferguson, Missouri. At least 31 people were arrested, some of whom came from as far away as New York and California, said Missouri State Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson. For almost two hours, police in riot gear formed a barricade and stood watch as hundreds of peaceful protesters marched in a singlefile line that stretched so long that different parts chanted different slogans. “Hands up, don’t shoot,” some repeated. “No justice, no peace,” others said while others were singing church hymns.

Morgue worker admits to raping 100 corpses Hamilton County in Cincinnati, USA can be sued because a morgue attendant had sex with female corpses while at work, a federal appeals court ruled Friday. Kenneth Douglas admitted in court that he sexually abused three corpses while he was drunk or on drugs, but he had sex with up to 100 bodies, he said in a deposition. “I would just get on top of them and pull my pants down,” said Douglas, who worked the night shift at the morgue from 1976 to 1992. The panel cited evidence that Douglas’ supervisors

were aware he was drinking and also having sex with live women while on the job. Douglas’ wife testified in a deposition that he reeked of sex when she picked him up from work. She said she called the coroner’s office and reported him, but the morgue supervisor told her to stop calling. The families of the three victims sued the county in 2012. Douglas, now 60, was convicted of gross abuse of a corpse in the cases of Karen Range, Charlene Appling and April Hicks.

Free-style architects sell designs in streets

An emerging pool of trained architects is cashing in on the housing design market to offer designs for as low as Sh1,000. As employment continues to plague the country’s youth, college graduates are finding alternative ways of reaping from their skills. Apart from building plans, architects and designers also estimate the costs of resources needed for clients to set up homes. The Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity

Surveyors, says the standard fee for architectural house plan in Kenya is 6 per cent of the total construction cost. But architect David Gitonga does not use the standard. Instead, he hawks his designs around Nairobi’s Community area. On a good day, the Housing and Construction Diploma holder from the Technical University (formally Kenya Polytechnic) pockets Sh6,000 from the business, which he started in 2012.

Gitonga says apart from selling assorted plans he designed a while ago, he takes commissions from clients and even visits sites on request for a negotiable fee. Fredrick Ochieng, another architect conducting business along Kimathi Street, in Nairobi, says to sell the plans, the architect must develop a blueprint. This includes basic information of a designer and the design measurements. Customer Humphrey Otengo

bought a house plan in Kisumu town for his residential home in Vihiga. He says he showed it to a constructor who ensured the work was executed as it appeared on paper. The total cost of the building is estimated at Sh1.5 million, meaning if he had contracted an architect, it would have cost Sh120,000 for the plan based on the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors standards.

KRA’s Sh9m iTax centres roll out

deal: KRA Commissioner General John Njiraini (left) and Chairman of Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Mumo Matemo sign a MOU on combating corruption in Nairobi. KRA’s iTax system is expected to reduce bribery in tax collection

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is investing Sh9 million in iTax centres throughout the country to increase compliance, enhance efficiency and end of bribery in tax-collection. iTax is the authority’s official electronic tax management system. John Njiraini, the KRA’s Commissioner General says plans are underway to open centres in Kisumu, Eldoret, Mombasa, Nyeri and Nakuru by the end of the year. The KRA opened its new centre in Nairobi earlier this year. Njirani said the iTax system has so far integrated more than 28 banks to ensure that most taxpayers are covered. He added that the system is already being used by 93 per cent of large taxpayers and 63 per cent of medium taxpayers. “The web-enabled system that seeks to make tax compliance a simple, quick

The price of milk is set to rise with the cost of a 500ml packet likely to cross the Sh50 mark, Kenya Dairy Board (KDB) officials has said KDB Managing Director, Machira Gichohi said the production of raw milk has dropped in the past three months leading to a rise in farm gate prices. The drop has been linked to low production during the cold weather. The chilly season saw processors take in 46 million litres of milk, down from 54 million litres in January. “Processors have registered a decline in milk volumes in a move that will see consumer prices increase by up to 10 per cent,” said Gichohi. He warned that consumers will be feeling the pinch within the next two months. “Early in the year, milk processors were handling more than 50 million litres per month. But for the last four months, milk output has decreased to about 46 million litres. We expect the volume to drop further in the next two months before the onset of the short rains in mid-October.”

Sense, a device to monitor, improve quality of sleep

It’s now easy to plug in with the reversible USB The successful designing of a reversible Type-C Universal Serial Bus (USB) puts to rest the worries of which side of your connector to insert into your device. It will not be necessary any more, even in darkness, to figure out which end of the cable should go into the device. Type-C connector can be plugged upside down freely

into any device like the Apples lighting connector. It is rounded-rectangular in design. It has 18 pins attached to a centre-board. The top and bottom sides have nine pins each, to allow data transfer without necessarily depending on how you plugged it in. Type-C can support 10 Gbps data flow. Its ability to deliver up to 100 watts makes it a charger too.

It has been developed to ease sharing of data with the new technology devices emerging in the market. For instance, it has been designed to conveniently work with smartphones, laptops as well as tablets. Ports of future generation USB devices are also factored in besides having a power lasting cycle of up to 10, 000. The mass production is

itspot

expected to start by next year after consultations with countries which by law specify the type of cables domestically used. It will be relief for users of smart technology devices who will be saved the burden of carrying and replacing many USBs from their multiple gadgets. They will be having just one: Type-C.

Sleep is an important aspect in the human functionality cycle. We need sleep so we can function and coordinate out actions better. Less or poor sleep leads to reduced productivity and crankiness. Endless hours are lost in a day when a person is constantly trying to stay awake because they did not get enough sleep the previous night. Sense is the answer to all these sleeping problems. It is a sleeping sensor that monitors the user’s bedroom and their sleeping patterns to tell them how to get a good night’s sleep. Sense combines insight from sleep patterns with the environment in the user’s bedroom which include noise, light, temperature and humidity. It has two components; the orb and the sleep pill. The orb sits on the user’s bedside table and has sensors that monitor environment of the bed room. The sleep pill on the other hand is clipped onto the user’s pillow to monitor movements the user makes in the night. Through an app compatible with both iOS and Android devices, Sense gives the user their sleep score which is generated out of 100 and it takes into account factors like a dog barking in the night or a partner snoring. It will then help the user fix whatever is keeping them from reaching the 100 per cent score. The Sense system has a smart alarm that is designed to wake the user in the morning at the right point in their sleep cycle. The user sets the alarm at the time they want to wake up.

phonejunkie Samsung Galaxy S5 vs iPhone 5S Design: Both have the same designs as their predecessors especially with the iPhone 5s as compared to the iPhone 5 whose only addition is the fingerprint scanner. The back cover for the S5 is also an addition the S4 does not have.

Display: The Galaxy S5 takes a 5.1 inch screen while the iPhone 5s still retains 4 inch screen size as the iPhone 5. But the screen size also depends on what the user would like. Samsung leads in screen clarity with a super AMOLED display with 432 ppi pixel densities on its 1080 display. The iPhone, on the oth- er hand, has a 336 ppi pixel density.

However, the iPhone 5s users still praised it for accurate color reproduction, brightness and superior viewing angles. Performance We are dealing with two different software’s here. Apple are known to have fluid and impressive animations and to add on great optimization. The iPhone 5’s has a 64-bit processor which is an upgrade from its predecessor. The iPhones performs better since Apple dealt with the bugs from their iOS 7 update to the 7.1. The S5 has a 2.5GHz quad-core snapdragon processor backed by adreno 330 with 2GB RAM. Both phones should satisfy anyone, even the heavy users. Hardware The Galaxy S5 is the clear winner here. It has a fingerprint scanner, heart rate monitor which comes in handy, NFC, dust proof and water resistance and lastly the ability to use a microSD card for any additional storage.

Children test sweet, bitter life after birth

Swahili children were taught that life is both bitter and sweet just before they were allowed to breastfeed. Issa Jamal says a child was given honey to symbolise the sweeter side of life and a sour concoction known as subili to signify hardships. Jamal, 66, says the culture recognised the two aspects of life to be realities that were to be made known to a child right

at birth as part of preparations. “Life is not going to be the same as it was in the womb of the mother. It will be struggling before something sweet happens,” he says. Prayers to bless the path of the baby in a new home were recited loudly into its ears. It is a way of invoking Allah’s intervention into the baby’s life for guidance. Names were derived from virtues, events

and days. For instance, Jabari is a male name that means fearless, while Imara meant resolute for girls. The Swahili believed in the existence of evil spirits and djins who torment humans and were, therefore, supposed to be kept at bay. Jamal says nyimbili, mvuje and vigwe were tied to hand and legs to protect the baby.

Break some eggs, make an omelette An omelette is a popular dish made from beaten eggs quickly tossed on a frying pan and ready in a flash. It is handy for breakfast, lunch, or even a quick and light supper. The main ingredients include; eggs, salt, ground black pepper, a butter or vegetable cooking oil and cheese, (which is optional). One can choose to add fillings such as vegetables (tomatoes, coriander, onions and mushrooms) and meat, usually ham. Break the eggs into a mixing bowl, add a pinch of salt and pepper.

To obtain a fluffy texture on the omelette, milk or cream is added. Baking powder or even water can be used. Beat well with a fork, ensure that it is watery before adding the milk or cream and continue beating until they mix perfectly. Grate the fillings, if any, separately and set aside. Slowly heat the pan, add a small amount of butter or cooking oil. When it has melted and is bubbling, add the eggs and move the pan around to spread them out

evenly. Do not turn up the heat, let it cook on low heat. When it begins to firm up but still with a little raw egg on top, sprinkle cheese or any other fillings over the omelette. Using a spatula, ease the omelette. around the edges off the pan and fold it over in half. When it starts to turn golden brown underneath, remove it from the frying pan. It can be taken with tea, coffee or any beverage or as a side dish for any other meal.

Maktuk is all whale skin, blubber but Eskimos love it Muktuk is a delicacy of the Inuit or Eskimo people of Greenland. It is a meal of frozen whale skin and blubber. The Inuit have been whale hunting for centuries and Muktuk, as a delicacy, is just as old. The meal is made from Bowhead or Narwhal whale. The Narwhal whale is hunted in the summer and made into a meal. Maktuk is mostly eaten raw and, occasionally, cooked. To cook it the meat is prepared cut into small pieces, coated with breadcrumbs and deep fried giving it a crispy texture. The meal is then served with soy sauce to add flavour.

Muktuk can sometimes be pickled to be preserved for lean days when the Narwhals cannot be found during the winter. The meat is put in an air tight jar filled with vinegar for a certain amount of time. When eaten raw the blubber has been described as having a nutty taste with an oily texture. The skin on the other hand has a rubbery taste. The Muktuk is said to have numerous nutritional value. The skin of the whale has been determined to be a good source of vitamin C while the blubber is a source of Vitamin D. The blubber, however, also contains carcinogens gotten from the ocean due human activities.

DELICACY: Maktuk is a century-old delicacy among the Eskimos.

Serena, Federer win Cincinnati masters titles

World number three Roger Federer won his sixth Cincinnati title with a hard-fought three-set victory over David Ferrer at the Western & Southern Open. World number one Serena Williams won the women’s title with straight sets victory over Ana Ivanovic. The 32-year-old American fell behind early on but recovered to win 6-4 6-1 in 62 minutes. It is her first victory at the event in six attempts since 2006. The 33-year-old Swiss won 6-3 1-6 6-2 and has now beaten the 32-year-old Spaniard in all 16 of their matches. But he was made to work by Ferrer, who was close to handing him his first love set since the 2008 French Open final.

“I’ve played some good tennis here over the years, so it’s really nice to come back and win it again,” Federer said. “The tournament was really good for me.” It was the former world number one’s first Masters title since 2012, when he also won in Cincinnati. But Federer said he had considered not playing after losing in the final in Toronto against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga a week earlier. “I had to try to back up a tough week from last week. I didn’t think it was possible,” he said. “But in practise I felt like I was recovering quickly so I gave it to a go. I played with less pressure,” said Federer who claimed his 80th career title.

United strike Sh2.3b deal for Sporting Lisbon’s Rojo Manchester United have agreed a Sh2.3billion deal for Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo, with Nani going the other way on a season-long loan. Rojo is to move to Old Trafford after extensive talks between the two clubs against the backdrop of the Argentine defender going on strike before apologising to supporters and team-mates. As well as the loan deal for

Nani and the initial fee, Sporting are also considering the possibility of taking Anderson on a short-term deal, an option United would strongly consider. And with United covering a large part of Nani’s salary one of the highest at the Premier League club - the deal is something of a triumph for Sporting President Bruno de Carvalho. He had refused to accept

United’s initial Sh2.3billion offer for Rojo, drawing the anger of the player and Doyen Sports, an investment fund who own 75 per cent of the Argentine’s economic rights. In bringing Nani back to the club where the forward launched his professional career, De Carvalho has landed one of Portugal’s most prominent footballers at a minimum cost to Sporting.

relief: arsenal players celebrate aaron ramsey’s last gasp winner against Crystral Palace at the emirates stadium on saturday. They face Besiktas in the Champions league qualifier tonight.

Gunners now train sights on Besiktas After a positive start to the new domestic season, Arsenal head to Istanbul in optimistic mood ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League play-off first leg against Besiktas. The Gunners followed up a convincing victory against Manchester City in the Community Shield with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday in their opening Premier League game, in which Aaron Ramsey netted a late winner. Now they are looking to secure a place in the lucrative group stage of Europe’s elite club competition

for a 17th consecutive campaign, although Wenger could do without the fitness concerns that are hanging over several players, including Kieran Gibbs, Laurent Koscielny and Jack Wilshere. “We want to be in the Champions League group stage. Besiktas had a convincing result against Feyenoord (winning 5-2 on aggregate in the third qualifying round), and so for us we have the luck to play the first game away,” said Wenger, who has floated the idea of calling on German World Cup-winning trio

Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski for the first time this season. Meanwhile, Ramsey admitted that Arsenal will need to improve on their performance against Palace, although he lauded the contribution of Wenger’s summer recruits in that match. “I think they have started really well. We were really solid at the back with (Mathieu) Debuchy and (Calum) Chambers, who were playing as if they’d been there for the last three years,” he said.

Atletico’s early chance to avenge Champions League loss to Real La Liga champions Atletico Madrid have a chance early in the season to avenge their defeat to Real Madrid in May’s Champions League final in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup on Tuesday. Despite having arguably Atletico’s best ever season, Diego Simeone’s men have still suffered from the departure of a number of key players over the close season as Filipe Luis and Diego Costa joined Chelsea and Thibaut Courtois, who returned to Stamford Bridge after a three-year loan spell. The money received from the sales of Costa and Filipe Luis has, however, been reinvested in an exciting new frontline as Mario Mandzukic joined from Bayern Munich, Mexican international Raul Jimenez was signed from Club America, and Antoine Griezmann moved from

Real Sociedad All three are in line to make their competitive debuts at the Santiago Bernabeu, but playmaker Arda Turan misses out due to a hamstring injury. The Super Cup is one of the few titles Atletico have missed out on during Simeone’s three years in charge as they were just edged out on away goals by Barcelona last season. And midfielder Mario Suarez is determined to make amends for their heart-breaking 4-1 defeat to Real after extra time in Lisbon three months ago, having been just over a minute away from winning the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history. “On Tuesday we are playing for an important title against our eternal rivals and we will face it as we always do. We want to win and everybody knows that,” said Suarez.

Arsenal would settle for a repeat of 12 months ago, when they beat another Istanbul side, Fenerbahce, 3-0 on the Asian side of the Bosphorus on the way to a 5-0 aggregate triumph. With Besiktas in the process of rebuilding their stadium across the river, Tuesday’s match will be played at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, where Liverpool beat AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final. Slaven Bilic’s side, who finished third in the Turkish Super League

last season, do not begin their domestic campaign until later this month, although they were convincing winners against Feyenoord in the third qualifying round, with former Chelsea striker Demba Ba scoring a hat-trick in the second leg. “Arsenal have some of the best players in the world but we have seen on many occasions that talent doesn’t necessarily mean a team will win,” said the Croatian Bilic, who played in England for West Ham United and Everton.

in the Continental Cup rather than breaking his personal best of 85.40m he set in Moscow at the World Championships last year. “I’m happy with the good results I have achieved this year. I was in good form in Glasgow although I had a groin injury but the best athlete won and that was me. I’m not looking at the distance, my main aim is to win the Continental Cup and accomplish three titles in a row,” said the 25-yearold police officer. Yego confirmed he will take part in the Zurich and Brussels Diamond League meeting before heading to the Continental Cup. “I have to compete there before focusing on the Continental Cup.”

Foreigners rev up for 62nd KCB Safari Rally The 6th Kenya National Rally Championship event will undoubtedly be a challenging private farm gravel rally that takes place between September 12 and 14. The Rally Guide released by organisers last week says documentation will take place at KMSF offices. Scrutineering has been set for Wednesday September 10 for Kenyan crews and September 11 for international entrants. The Spectator stage on Day 1 will be at Migaa estate. The first leg will run towards Nanyuki, and the service park on the opening day at Batian View. The 62nd leg will be run around Nanyuki. The service park for the leg will be centred at Batian View, on the foothills of Mt Kenya. The Kenya Motor Sport Federation organised event will be the 62nd running of the Safari Rally. The event was launched in 1953 with the first Corona-

tion East African Safari Rally. It gained international recognition from 1965 before it was included in the World Championship for Rallies in 1973 after the organisation replaced the International Championship. Four-time Safari Rally winner Carl Tundo returns to the scene in a Proton S2000 contraption that he rolled in a test drive prior to the Nanyuki Rally. Tundo, son of veteran Safari Rally veteran Frank Tundo, will be going for his biggest achievement ever, to equal legendary Shekhar Mehta’s record of five victories. Tundo is no doubt the master of long stages and will seek to attain the feat and become the first ever driver to win the Safari Rally in a Proton S2000. Under-16 hockey team trains eyes on Moscow 2020 Olympics The Hockey Union (KHU) has assembled an under-16 national team that targets to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Moscow. The 23 players will be handled by Meshak Senge as head coach assisted by Josephine Ataro. The squad consists of three goalkeepers, seven defenders, seven midfielders and six forwards. The players will be exposed for experience through local and international matches.

The Centre for MultiParty Democracy (CMD) gave kits and equipment worth more than Sh1 million. The donation includes Samurai apparel playing and training kits, hockey sticks, bibs, boots, shin guards and goalkeepers full kit. Other facilities include masks, gloves, kit bags and first aid kit which were presented by CMD chairman James Omingo Magara at City Park Stadium over the weekend.

The squad comprises:

Natasha Maria, Cassandra Dacha, Virginia Wanyee, Sandra Odera, Hanna Wasidiwa, Bavis Mwenesi of Moi Girls, Nairobi. Nouvelle Awino, Jane Muragu, Eva Hilda, Lyn Mumbi, Ruth Adhiambo Jane Nzula, Grace Muchiri, Margaret Muthoni, Lucy Wacera (Kerugoya Girls), Valerian Kariuki (Loreto), Mary Ann Kimani and Florence Karanja of Mt Laverna, Kasarani, in Nairobi. Players from KHU Development XI include: Mitchelle Akoth, Ivy Gitonga and Georgia Fernandes.

Britain’s Chris Froome will lead Team Sky at the three-week Vuelta a Espana which starts on August 23. Froome, 29, who quit the Tour de France last month due to injury, leads a team of nine at the third Grand Tour of the season. The team comprises fellow Britons Peter Kennaugh and Luke Rowe. “This is the sort of challenge I need,” Froome said. “You can’t dwell on disappointment… you have to move on quickly and the Vuelta is the perfect race to focus on,” he said. Another Briton, Adam Yates, will ride for Orica GreenEdge. However, it is not clear whether Mark Cavendish will make it to the Omega Pharma - QuickStep team. The Manx sprint specialist dislocated a shoulder and suffered ligament damage when he crashed near the end of the opening stage of Tour de France which started in Yorkshire. Froome, who won the 2013 Tour, lasted until the fifth stages of the 21-stage race, which was won by Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali. The Briton had resumed riding after the first fall in wet conditions, but withdrew after his second fall with around 66km to cover.

Mourinho: Barcelona wasted Fab’ José Mourinho claimed Cesc Fábregas was misused by Barcelona and hailed his impressive Chelsea debut as confirmation of why the former Arsenal captain was his first choice midfield target this summer. The sh4.4billion signing shone on his first Premier League start for Chelsea as Burnley were beaten 3-1 at Turf Moor with goals from his fellow debutant Diego Costa, Andre Schürrle and Branislav Ivanovic. Mourinho also gave a first Premier League start to the goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois at the expense of Petr Cech but denied the selection would lead to the 32-year-old’s departure from Stamford Bridge. Burnley had taken an early lead through Scott Arfield but, with Fábregas involved in all three Chelsea goals, including an exquisite pass for Schürrle’s second, Mourinho insisted the midfielder would give his team a new dimension this season. “The team played very well but I

agree with Cesc being man of the match because he and [Nemanja] Matic controlled the game and dictated the intensity of it,” said the Chelsea manager. “They decided how to control the pace. They were both good brains in this team and I am happy with that because last season we could not control the game as we controlled [it] today.” Asked how he felt at the arrival of Fábregas, Mourinho added: “When the players are your first choice it is very difficult to make a mistake. Fábregas was our first choice for that position. I know clearly what the player is because we were so long in the same league. “He moved to Spain also, so for the last 10 years we have been in the same league for six or seven. I know exactly what he will bring. For Barça he was the fake nine, the number ten and winger but I know and he knows what is his best position so he is giving exactly what we need.”

yESSS! : Cesc Fabregas was outstanding for Chelsea against Burnely last night. His manager Jose Mourihno claimed Barcelona did not use him well.
