Army may quit Somalia by 2016 From Page 1 The only roadblock is the “complete flush out of Al-Shabaab” from the sea. “Going by the current projections, we are almost certain that we shall see take off in 2016 and according to our roadmap, Amisom would be leaving Somalia in 2016. The target is achievable. So, as we clean out Al-Shabaab, we have the mandate to build capacity and this is a process we have embarked on,” she said. She was flanked by Somalia envoy
to Uganda Sheik Sayid Ahmed Dahir, who echoed the remarks, saying his country is ready to take off. “Somalia will have no more conflict in the coming years; and with the help our friendly countries, we are now ready to take full control. We welcome the capacity building trainings that our partners are conducting and I urge our countrymen to enforce what they have studied for the betterment of our country,” he said. Amisom is made up of troops from
Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone. Kenya has contributed the largest number of the troops. Some politicians have questioned the continued presence of KDF troops in Somalia, with others calling for their withdrawal to halt attacks by Al-Shabaab insurgents. The militants have claimed they will continue to launch attacks in Kenya unless the troops are withdrawn. But President Uhuru Kenyatta has maintained that the troops will
continue to fight the terror group right inside Somalia until the mission of making Somalia secure is achieved. The opposition have been demanding for the withdrawal of the soldiers, saying their mission has ended. They claim the military has been accused of illegally selling charcoal while terrorism in Kenya has not abated. KDF first crossed into Somalia in October 2011 following a spate of abductions on Kenyan soil by the militants.
The plan to withdraw the troops in two years’ time are also seen as parts of plans to allow Somalia to conduct her general elections scheduled for 2016. The two envoys spoke during the international humanitarian law training on Wednesday at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort in Kampala. During the exercise, more than 30 officers from Somalia National Army were equipped with techniques on how to handle civilians.

Recovered US ebola patient discharged from hospital
US authorities intervene in copyright dispute sparked by Monkey selfie Animals, ghosts and gods cannot own copyright, the United States Copyright Office has said. This is in reaction to an objection by David Slater, a British nature photographer, to a decision by Wikimedia (the US-based organisation behind Wikipedia) to distribute a monkey ‘selfie’ for free taken by the photographer’s camera. Slater gave his camera to a monkey, which then took a picture of itself. He claims that, as a professional, he owns the rights to the picture, but the US Copyright Office seems to disagree. The copyright watchdog has since published a draft update to its rules regarding ownership of creative works like photographs, text and art. The update explicitly states that it will only recognise pieces produced by human beings The office published a list of examples of prohibited claims and made sure to include “a photograph taken by a monkey”, which, of course, refers to the recent Wikipedia case.
Uhuru term to stretch into 2018 if polls Bill passes President Uhuru Kenyatta’s first term may spill over to January 2018 if a new Bill seeking to change the month of general elections is pased by MPs. The Parliamentary Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs yesterday gave the green light for the publication of the Bill which wants the month of the elections changed from August to December. Committee chairman Samuel Chepkonga, while endorsing its publication, said the Bill should be published “forthwith” so that the electoral commission gets prepared for the new dates. The Constitution spells out that the general election be held on Tuesday of the second week of August of every fifth year in the election circle but MPs now want the polls moved to the
Monday of the second week of December. According to the committee, the change is meant to free Kenyans from the hassles of politics in the middle of the year. The legislators argued that having elections in August interferes with the budget process, the school calendar and national exams, as well as voter turn-out. But on the other side, the change in law will also extend the term of all elected leaders, including President Uhuru Kenyatta, by at least four months. Ugenya MP David Ochieng who is sponsoring the Bill said he hopes it will be introduced into the House when members return from recess, which begins next week. However, there will also be a 90-day AUgUSt hoUSE: CParliament in session. the house is due to discuss a Bill that seeks to change participatory period once election dates from August to December. the Bill is tabled.
One of the US aid workers who recovered from an Ebola infection said he is “thrilled to be alive” as he and another patient were discharged from hospital. Dr Kent Brantly, 33, thanked supporters for their prayers at a news conference in Atlanta. Nancy Writebol, 59, was discharged on Tuesday. The two were brought to the US for treatment three weeks ago. The outbreak has killed more than 1,300 people in West Africa, with many of the deaths occurring in Liberia. Today is a miraculous day,” said Dr Brantly, who appeared healthy if pallid as he addressed reporters on Thursday at Emory University hospital. “I am thrilled to be alive, to be well, and to be reunited with my family. As a medical missionary, I never imagined myself in this position.” He said Ebola “was not on the radar” when he and his family moved to Liberia in October. After his family returned to the US as the Ebola outbreak tore through West Africa, he continued to treat Ebola patients and woke up on 23 July feeling “under the weather”. Dr Brantly said he lay in bed for nine days, getting progressively sicker and weaker. On 1 August, he was flown to Atlanta for treatment at Emory. Emory infectious disease specialist, Dr Bruce Ribner said after rigorous treatment and testing, officials were confident Dr Brantly had recovered and can return to his family.

Purge security organs of graft, ex-officer urges Retired military officer Bashir Haji Abdullaih has asked the Government to fight corruption within security agencies if the ongoing reforms are to be effective. He says external threats from terrorists have become an internal problem because of corruption at the borders and the Immigration Department. Speaking during a public debate on Kenya’s struggle for justice and security, Abdullaih however, applauded President Kenyatta for making changes at the Immigration Department. “There are number of issues at hand. When we talk about external threats becoming internal threats we mean that the external group is using
internal elements to carry out these attacks or the same group has sneaked into the country,” Abdullaih said. “If you look at the group coming in to carry out the attacks, the issue of manning, surveillance and control of our borders is very weak. Corruption at our border points allows people to sneak in….some of the elements could be causing the damage,” he said. On Wednesday, MajorGeneral (rtd) Gordon Kihalangwa replaced Jane Waikenda as the Director of Immigration. The retired officer has a “wealth of experience in security services and people management” after serving and rising through the ranks in the Kenya Defence Forces.

President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated Kameru, who is the Director of Military Intelligence to succeed Gichangi who resigned last week. A statement from State House said his name has been forwarded to Parliament for vetting and approval as the President moves to fill the void left by Gichangi. Parliament has 14 days to vet his suitability to the office before recommending or rejecting the appointment. President Kenyatta said Kameru has provided distinguished service to the country for more than 36 years. He rose through the ranks to become the Director of Military Intelligence of the Kenya Defence Forces in 2011. His term of duty has been characterised
by exemplary diligence, dedication, and leadership. Kameru is credited with the success of Kenya’s intelligence-gathering in Somalia as part of the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), a deployment that seeks to restore peace and order to the country and secure Kenya’s border with the war-ravaged nation. Known for his discipline and loyalty, Major-General Kameru is rated by the military as “an exemplary professional”. He also holds three Masters degrees; an MSc in Natural Resources Management, MA in International Studies, and an MSc in Security Management. “Our intelligence service must now meet new and old challenges. Major-General Kameru has gathered extensive experience in operational and administrative matters. He has also undergone rigorous training both in Kenya and abroad,” President Kenyatta said of his nominee.
Insecurity, poor facilities, corruption, lack of adequate healthcare and education systems have pushed Nairobi to the bottom of the list of the 20 most habitable cities around the world. The Kenyan capital is ranked 122nd out of 140 cities surveyed whose results were released Tuesday by the Economist Intelligence Unit. But Nairobi has improved two places from last year, when it ranked 124. Despite the poor roads and constant electricity supply hiccups, Nairobi was ranked sixth in Africa with
Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cairo, and Cape Town leading the pack. The study, which categorises world cities according to stability, environment, education, healthcare and infrastructure, says cities that faced unrest such as Syria’s Damascus, were relegated to lower positions. The report serves as a pointer to the investment opportunities available in the capitals. For instance, a potential investor will know whether to place money in health or education if a city ranks low in that respect. Other investors may shy off
low-ranked cities like Nairobi for fear of the high costs they are likely to incur in running businesses. In addition to being a development gauge, the report helps in defining salaries and allowances for staff to match the challenges they are likely to face while working in the cities. For four consecutive years, Australia’s Melbourne was the most preferred city to live after scoring up to 100 per cent in healthcare. Canada’s Vancouver and Toronto were ranked third and fourth respectively after Vienna in Austria took the second spot.

Private cars set for vetting to reduce road accidents Private motorists will soon have their cars inspected as the Government launches a move to keep unroadworthy vehicles out of the roads. The National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) says the inspections will start in January. All vehicles which are older than four years will have to undergo the mandatory inspections. “The law is already in place and we are putting in necessary structures to support the inspection,” the agency’s Director General Francis Meja said on Thursday. There are a total of 18 inspection centres countrywide and the agency says the exercise will be carried out annually. Unroadworthy vehicles have been blamed for a number of fatal crashes on the highways and the move is part of the campaign by the Transport ministry to reduce road accidents.

US reckons IS militants most dangerous threat Islamic State militants are the most dangerous threat the US has faced in recent years, Washington has warned. Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said US air strikes had helped to break the Islamist advance in Iraq, but the militants could be expected to regroup. America’s top general Martin Dempsey stressed that IS could not be defeated without attacking their base in Syria. The warnings come after IS posted a video showing the beheading of US journalist James Foley.
The US has now begun a formal criminal investigation into Mr Foley’s death, with US Attorney General Eric Holder warning that the country has a “long memory”. It has emerged that a special US military mission tried but failed earlier this summer to rescue Mr Foley and other US hostages held in Syria. The militants had also reportedly demanded a ransom of $132m (Sh11.2 billion) for his release. Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, Mr Hagel described IS as
an imminent threat. “They are beyond just a terrorist group. They marry ideology, a sophistication of strategic and tactical military prowess, they are tremendously well-funded... this is beyond anything that we have seen.” US did not rule out additional action against the militants. In the UK, police and security services are trying to identify the jihadist who appeared in footage of Mr Foley’s killing. Unconfirmed reports suggest the man - who had an English accent - is from

Brown-Young said she was teased and bullied growing up and subjected to a lot of verbal abuse. She dropped out of high school and was working towards her GED when she was called for ANTM.

Study: Double vaccines could hasten end of polio Using both oral and injectable polio vaccines could speed up the eradication of the disease, research suggests. The oral vaccine is leading the fight against the paralysing disease but trials in India show an additional injection of inactivated virus boosts immunity. The World Health Organization said the findings, were “truly historic”. Two drops of the oral vaccine, which contains a weakened polio virus, is the preferred method because it is cheap and gives resistance in the digestive tract to lower transmission of the virus.

Jamii Bora unveils insurance cover for stolen ATM cards Jamii Bora Bank customers will receive an insurance cover of up to Sh40,000 compensation in case of ATM card robbery or hijacking. The bank said on Wednesday the cover will be offered by the Heritage Insurance Company following a previous agreement signed between the two companies. The deal will ensure Jamii Bora debit card holders customers pay an annual fee of Sh510 in exchange for the cover. The insurance will also cover emergency accidental expenses, card replacement and a life cover.
ATM fraud has cost banks millions in losses as customers complain of missing cash from accounts. Since 2012, lenders have lost more than Sh1.4 billion to thieves who make copies of the outdated strip cards. “Such a loss must be reported to the bank within 24 hours of occurring,” said Sam Kimani, the Chief Executive of Jamii Bora Bank. Jamii Bora’s move follows a drive by banks earlier in the year to phase out the use of magnetic stripe technology in their ATM cards. The facilities were replaced with more secure chip and pin
technology. Chip and pin cards have proved to be successful in other countries. Nigeria’s Central Bank reports that their drive has reduced cases of ATM fraud by more than 90 per cent since it was introduced over 4 years ago. Meanwhile, Kimani says the Jamii Bora cover will also protect customers from loss of funds withdrawn by forceful means anywhere in the world. “It also covers emergency first aid expenses for bodily injuries as a result of the robbery or hijack incidents,” he said.
McDonald’s restaurants closed down in Moscow Four McDonald’s restaurants have been shut in Moscow by Russia’s main consumer watchdog for allegedly breaching sanitary laws. The closure is part of an ongoing investigation into McDonald’s food standards in Russia. Consumer watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, claimed the restaurants had breached many sanitary laws. The watchdog further said it will carry out checks at other McDonald’s restaurants in central Russia. Last month, Rospotrebnadzor filed a lawsuit in Moscow urging the restaurant chain to withdraw certain products. The complaint alleges contamination of a McDonald’s product tested in Novgorod, Russia, and
misleading nutritional information. In a statement, McDonald’s said it was studying the complaints and vowed to provide safe and quality products. “We will continue taking care of our employees and will do our best to continue the success of McDonald’s business in Russia,” said the statement. The US-based company operates about 400 restaurants in the country. In early April, McDonald’s suspended work at its three Crimean restaurants following Russia’s annexation. Russia has also imposed a full embargo on food imports from Europe, US and some other Western countries in response to sanctions over Ukraine.

Internet platform SoundCloud to start bombarding fans with ads SoundCloud, the popular online platform that allows internet users to access free music, will start bombarding fans with ads. Without paying artists or record companies, SoundCloud lets people freely upload and stream any kind of audio. Musicians have embraced it as a way of sharing their hottest work with fans. Lorde, the teenage pop star from New Zealand rose to fame after posting her song “Royals” on the platform.
The company says about 175 million people listen to music on its platform each month, more than four times the global audience of popular site, Spotify. “We have listeners in every single country in the world and in space,” said Alex Ljung, SoundCloud’s chief executive. History SoundCloud was originally started in Stockholm, Sweden, but was set up in Berlin in August 2007 by Swedish sound designer Alex
Ljung and Swedish artist, Eric Wahlforss. In April 2009, SoundCloud received €2.5 million (Sh293 million) funding from Doughty Hanson Technology Ventures. By May 2010, SoundCloud announced it had one million subscribers. On Thursday, as part of a new licensing deal with entertainment companies, SoundCloud will begin incorporating advertising and for the first time to let artists and record labels collect royalties.
Implications Many web users complain that ads, especially the kind that pop up at random, are a frustrating part of visiting their favourite sites. The new feature is likely to cause users to raise complaints and make the SoundCloud experience less enjoyable. However, the site plans to introduce a paid subscription service that will let listeners skip those ads, as they can with Spotify and other licensed services.
Paul Gamba, who did the study with a number of colleagues, says the cash spent varies from household to household. “School fees is an area where income groups play a big role in determining expenditure shares,” he said. “There was wide dispersion with household incomes ranging from Sh1,200 to Sh2,184,000 per month.” Gamba and colleagues, along with Francis Karin, a senior researcher at the university, said school fees takes about six per cent of every household’s expenditure. The poorest households spend only three per cent of income on school fees while the wealthiest spend 14 per cent. This means the wealthiest households spend up more than Sh305,000 a month on fees. The survey showed that a Nairobi household has three children. Majority of parents send children to affordable public schools. A small number of those surveyed took children to expensive private institutions. Gamba says the average amount of money spent on fees ranges from Sh406 a month for the lowest income earners to Sh13,434 for the wealthiest group.

State seeks private firms to run new berths at port
The government has announced plans to source for a private company to manage berths 20 and 21 at the port of Mombasa once construction is complete by 2016. Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau, the move is aimed at ensuring faster operations at the port and enhancement of efficiency. “All people who are working up to berth 19 will continue working as usual because this is additional capacity,” Kamau said. “So it is more people coming in, it is more employment, it is faster movement of cargo and of course fulfilling the conditionality of the loan,” he said. One of the main qualifications of the firm to manage the berths will be experience in operating a berth with a capacity of 400, 000 20ft equivalent unit (TEU) containers. The company must also be ready to own 51 per cent of the facility, with the remaining 49 per cent going to Kenyan investors. “After the procurement process is over, which we are going to commence maybe in another months’ time, we will start international competitive bidding,” Kamau said during a business stakeholders meeting organised by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in Nairobi.
CARGO HANDLING: A container terminal in Mombasa.
The construction of the berths will cost Sh23 billion. The berths will be able to handle a capacity of over 550,000 TEU containers annually. “At the moment there is no berth 20
and 21; it is under construction. But the contractor will finish the work by February 2016,” the CS said. In the last six months, container traffic at the Mombasa port realised
a growth rate of 11. 5 per cent reaching 463,807 TEUs compared to 415,958 registered during the same period in 2013.

businesswise Why rich smart people end up poor
Many people see wealthy people as sources of inspiration but not all rich people are smart. In fact, many of them lose their fortunes when they succumb to arrogance. “We have all seen it in our careers - people who we thought would have gone on to be the tops in their company or industry but who end up shooting themselves in the foot,” explains Erick Jackson, the founder and Managing Partner of Ironfire Capital LLC, a tech-focused business company. Jackson, who holds a PhD in Management from the Columbia University Graduate School of Business in New York, says people can lose their fortunes faster than they got it. Jackson says this is because they assume their past success will be seen in their new projects. Another reason is that successful people sometimes banish people who have different opinions from their inner circle. “When we become the boss and someone tells us we’re wrong, we can simply tell them they’re not the best fit on our team,” explains Jackson. He says that wealthy people assume, based on all their past success, that they can’t be wrong. Jackson, notes that the smartest people who succeed in their careers for the long-term “never stop working hard, never stop building relationships, and never lose touch with their own strengths and weaknesses.”
CLEVER FARMING: An aquaponics setup, which integrates crop and fish farming. The water from the fish pond (lower rack) is reused in the upper shelf for the plants.
Double catch in fish, strawberry farm Two enterprising young men are making over Sh3 million a year from fish and strawberries in a creative move that has given them clients from as far as Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Samuel Gitimu and Edward Nyagah, came into the spotlight in 2012, when their innovation was voted the best model in the Nature Challenge, a contest organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and NETFUND to foster
green farming techniques that safeguard the environment and promise higher food returns. “Our system integrates the plants and fish and the two become symbiotic, ultimately forming a long term, sustainable green model,” noted Gitimu. The system consists of a fish pond or fish tank, which is set up in one end of a greenhouse with the crops growing above the water. The waste from the fish introduces
two types of bacteria into the tank, which become the fertilizer for the plants. “The aim is to use a soilless medium to grow the crops because it is only the water and nutrients that the crops need. The crops inside the structure all depend on these nutrients, which are generated by the fish,” explained Gitimu. He says they were inspired by Australian farmers, who were doing something similar iy. Gitumi says
an 8x15-metre greenhouse can take about 1,000 strawberry plants and over 1,000 tilapia fish and that the structure can give returns of over Sh3 million annually, based on three harvests per year. Gitumi says that anyone using the system can “harvest 15 tonnes of straw berries per year and 6 tonnes of tilapia” over the same period. Last year alone, the duo set up over 12 systems and the demand is growing steadily.

Make up for girls’ night out A night out on the town with the girls is one of life’s little luxuries. It is all about getting dolled up, looking fabulous and having a great time. Wearing the right makeup for the occasion will work wonders for your entire look. The following tips should to help you get there.
Red Lips
Many women live in fear of red lipstick, thinking that they cannot handle such a bold color. Truth is anyone can pull off red lips. If you have never gone red, start off with a sheer red lip color and gradually move on to a matte lipstick.
Smoky Eyes
If you’re looking for a dramatic, high-impact look that screams “evening,” a smoky eye is the way to go. Creating a smoky eye is simpler than it sounds. Like all things, practice makes
An apple a day keeps the skin healthy and glowing In 2004, the United Sates Department of Agriculture conducted a research on over 100 fruits to measure their antioxidant concentration. Apples were found to contain a high concentration of antioxidants that help the body clear the toxins from inside the body. The toxic build up, if not removed regularly, damages the skin. The body naturally detoxifies itself through the digestive system but when the toxins build-up is heavy, the body only eliminates what it can then the rest is re-absorbed. The toxic substance is then delivered to the skin hence the break out of skin disorders like acne. The antioxidants found in
apples help the body flush heavy toxins from the body making the skin clear. Regularly removing toxins from the body strengthens

the immune system. Apples are also full of fibre which helps the body maintain good digestion and helps cure a constipated stomach.
Cleansing is an important part of your evening and morning beauty routine. It is not only for removing make up, it also removes impurities your skin has been subjected to the whole day. Throughout the day, the skin picks up a lot of impurities due to pollution and dust. It is, therefore, important to always clean your skin before bed every night. Lack of, or poor cleansing, leads to blocked pores causing the skin to break out. One can use specialised cleansers
perfect. My advice, stick with a more neutral palette to avoid color overload.
Try False Lashes
The idea of fake eyelashes ‘falsies’ might be a little intimidating, even for regular make up wearers. All you need is a few individual lashes on the upper outside corners of your eyes to make them pop. Once you have mastered the art, I can bet good money that falsies will become a regular part of your night out make up routine.
Rein it in
Resist the temptation to go bold on every part of your face unless of course it is 31st October. On any other day, pick one feature for dramatic treatment and leave the rest as neutral as possible. If you want dark eyes, pick a sheer gloss for your lips. If you are dying to wear that fuchsia lipstick, go easy on the eyeliner and mascara. Have a great night out and don’t forget to take lots of selfies for Facebook and Instagram.
shopit Mascara is a bold fashion statement Mascara is a cosmetic product applied on eyelashes to make eyes bolder and beautiful. Before its invention in the 19th century, women would mix ash or lampblack and elderberry juice and heat it then apply it on the eyelashes. But later on better forms of mascara were developed and improved as time went on to what is seen today. It enhances lashes bringing out a deep look. Whether you prefer long, voluminous and curled lashes or natural yet noticeable, a good type of mascara is essential. The lash enhancer comes in both a water proof and washable form that can be used to lengthen, thicken, darken or colour eyelashes. For a detailed definition of your eyes, sample out the following brands of mascara from Jumia Onlin.
or their trusted soap and water. Be careful the type of soap you use. When you remove your make-up with ordinary soap, it strips the skin of essential oils leaving it dry and tight. Using a
Maybelline mascara which is sold at Sh1,500 comes in a long-lasting washable or waterproof pack. This brand wings many types of mascara that are made to suit the user’s style. Revlon mascara is worth Sh1,569. It instantly transforms eyelashes into fuller and longer strokes. Revlon must be applied with care to avoid messy clogs on the lashes. gentle cleanser on your face goes a long way. There are different types of cleansers for different skin and it is advisable to get the one appropriate for your skin. A morning cleansing is also
beneficial in that it removes the toxins the skin might eliminate at night leaving it refreshed and clean for applying fresh makeup. Cleansing has also been said to slow down aging. Every day that passes we age and washing the face before bed is an excellent way to slow down the external factors that bring about aging. Foregoing cleansing will lead to your skin having larger pores. When makeup is left on, it seeps into the skin and starts clogging your pores and expanding them.

‘It’s important to keep in mind that the engine itself is a very complicated and efficiently designed collection of steel’
Signs that the classic car you are eyeing is a goner There are many petrolheads in Kenya, who not only take pride in owning unexceptional cars of the past, but maintain them just as carefully as they would a Range Rover Sport. And there are many more working to join this group of classic car enthusiasts, with most hoping to start

off by acquiring a parked 40-something-year-old jallopy and bringing it back to enviable shape. What most don’t know, however, is that there are cars out there presumed to be classics, that just cannot be saved. Below are a number of indicators to help tell when your quest for a beautiful showpiece is just another money pit. 1. Discontinued parts Tracking down replacement parts is arguably the toughest challenge most restorers have to go through. Unfortunately,
Sikhs told helmets are a must The state of Ontario, Canada will not allow turban-wearing Sikhs to ride motorcycles without wearing helmets, a decision the Canadian Sikh Association has called “deeply” disappointing. Premier Kathleen Wynne wrote to the organization last week, saying she had struggled with striking the right balance between
public safety and religious accommodation. “After careful deliberation, we have determined that we will not grant this type of exemption as it would pose a road safety risk,” she wrote in the Aug. 14 letter. “Ultimately, the safety of Ontarians is my utmost priority, and I cannot justify setting that
concern aside on this issue.” The mandatory helmet law is based on extensive research that shows the high risk of injury and death for motorcyclists who ride without a helmet, she added. Mortality rates have gone down 30 per cent and head injury rates down 75 per cent in jurisdictions with such laws.

sometimes the search for that shiny new fuel pump may be the end of your restoration journey, once you discover that the company that used to make it either abandoned it for more profitable business, or shut down all together. Before you part with you hard-earned money to drag that tin can off someone’s garage, do your research and ensure that there is someone out there who manufactures brand new parts for the model. 2. Worn out body Writer Jacob Clifton warns classic car enthusiasts to
watch out for “Washington’s Ax” syndrome. “If you’re not familiar with the story, it’s a bit of a shaggy-dog narrative in which first the handle and then the blade of George Washington’s famous ax are replaced, resulting in an ax that was once completely historically accurate, but is now just an ax with all-new parts,” writes Clifton. 3. Discontinued tyres The design of wheels and tyres varies alot across the years, and more so for older models. Restorers may rebuild a classic only to discover that they cannot get fitting tyres anywhere in the world. 4. Engine issues The engine is one of the main focus points of any reconstruction, but because it’s the most complex, it’s also the easiest to get wrong. Ensure that the engine block is undamaged and that all the parts are in working order. For a proper restoration, you need to replace every tiny part that needs replacing. “It’s important to keep in mind that the engine itself is a very complicated and efficiently designed collection of steel. Damage that’s difficult -sometimes even impossible to see -- can make the difference between a champion driving machine and a yard ornament -- or worse, a safety hazard,” says Justin.

Hike through Maasai country for a delightfully refreshing break
OUTDOOR FUN: Olesekut offers a moderately easy day hike through Maasai country that takes about 5-6 hours to complete.
Situated in the South Rift Valley about 50km from Nairobi, the Olesekut Summit on Oloroka mountain range offers a moderately easy day hike through Maasai country that takes about 5-6 hours to complete. Foreigners erroneously call this place olesakut to the dismay of the Maasai, since that is a swear word in their language. After starting at the plains near Ole Sayeti, the trail skirts to the
left of this little hill, then cuts across another plain to get to the base of Olesekut. It then winds its way up onto the Oloroka Ridges that present spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, including the distant Ngong Hills. From here on, the trail levels off at a high elevation and follows a ridge top with stunning V-shaped gullies running off to the sides, and breathtaking sheer cliff drops. At the head of one of these
side valleys is Kitalo Cave, a refuge for Maasai Morans during their period of living in the wild, following their circumcision. Save for the few herds of Maasai livestock you encounter grazing on the lower hill slopes, Olesekut is delightfully isolated from civilization, and from its summit you get magnificent views of both Ngong Hills and Mt Olorgesailie. It makes for a truly refreshing day hike from Nairobi.

Epic battles lined up as EPL enters second week After an eventful off-season of speculation and intrigue, the EPL is back. The opening round of the season produced the expected action and excitement. From the Van Gaal era starting with a shock loss, Suarez-less Liverpool asserting title credentials and Fabregas shining for Chelsea, fans were exposed to what could shape up to be one of the most captivating seasons to date. The action continues this week. Defending champions Manchester City take on last year’s runners-up Liverpool on Monday in arguably the match of the week. Meanwhile, Arsenal will face a stern test when
they take on Everton at Merseyside. Chelsea goes head to head with newsboys Leicester City at Stamford Bridge. Manchester will seek to bounce back away to Sunderland. Roberto Martinez insists must prepare to face a fit and firing Arsenal on Saturday – and not expect them to be suffering from a European hangover. The Gunners drew 0-0 with Turkish side Besiktas on Tuesday night in a Champions League qualifying play-off tie. But Martinez says Arsene Wenger’s men have the strength in depth and experience to cope with two big games in five days.

Already winners in Kabeberi and Dala in the 2014 national circuit, the bankers will be out to defend the title they won in the past two years. In last year’s final, they beat Quins 12-5 in the finals. The bankers lead the overall standings with 44 points. Dala Sevens losing finalists, Homeboyz, face Nondies, Kisumu and Thika in Drift Woods Sevens. Homboyz are second in the standings
with 36 points after two rounds of the circuit. Quins are third with 29 points after a disappointing performance in Kisumu. KCB coach Curtis Olago said they are gunning for all five circuit wins and will not rest on their laurels despite taking lead after two rounds. “We are happy with the performance so far. We have won two tournaments but our intentions is to get better and win all the five legs,” said Olago. Olago predicted tough competition in the next leg considering the Kenya Sevens stars will be back to their clubs.

F1 returns with action at the Spa Formula One returns from its annual August break with the two Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton set to resume their private duel for the driver’s title. The rivalry between the team mates was taken a notch higher after Hamilton disobeyed team orders to let Roseberg through to a podium finish at the
Hungarian Grand Prix which produced a surprise with Daniel Ricciardo winning for Red Bull. Valtteri Bottas of Williams believes his much-improved Mercedes-powered team have their best opportunity of the season at this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix. But the intensity of the battle to catch and, at some
circuits, challenge Roseberg and Hamilton for victory will increase as tension rises in the closing eight races of the 19-round season starting at the majestic old Belgian track in the forests of the Ardennes. “I think in theory Spa, and Monza, should be the next really good ones for us, maybe the best opportunities
of the season,” said Finnish driver Bottas. Bottas believes that the power advantage provided by the Mercedes engines, and an efficient aerodynamic package, will enable the Williams cars to be extremely competitive in Belgium and Italy and threaten both the Mercedes factory team and Red Bull, whose Renault
Gor Mahia face Sony as they look to recover from Kigali fiasco Kenyan champions Gor Mahia return to their comfort zone after woeful performance in the Kagame Cup from which they were dumped without a win. It was reflection of how low the Kenyan football has sunk, the Kenyan champions were paired with arguably the ‘weak’ sides in a five-team Group B but were beaten twice and just managed to draw the other two games. On Sunday they host Sony Sugar at the City Stadium and despite missing in action for over three week, Gor remain second on the log with 38 points two behind Tusker who have played three more matches. Coach Bobby Williamson says his players need to take the games in hand seriously to give his side advantage in their pursuit of retaining the title. “We did not expect to give
such a poor show but we have learnt the hard way that every game counts and that working hard is a must for every team, even league champions,” said captain Jerim Onyango “We will now focus on the
league and hope we win it so that we can take part in the same competitions next year,” he added. “Definitely we will not focus on the disappointing outing. All we need now is total concentration on the league
and defending it at the end of the season,” said Williamson. His counterpart Zedekiah Otieno said this will not be the best time to face a side coming from a poor outing in a tournament they were tipped to excel.

engines this year have been disappointing. Bottas’ view is supported by that of Williams performance boss Rob Smedley said: “Both tracks will suit our car very well-mainly due to the fact the power sensitivity at those tracks is very high. Every horsepower you have is worth more there than at other tracks.
We know our car is very strong in these areas. Additionally, I think at somewhere like Spa, with harder compounds, it can sometimes be quite difficult to get the tyres turned on and I think our car can do that.” If all that spells problems for the Mercedes men, they are unlikely to show it.

CK’s Janmohamed says she won’t go back on resignation Former Cricket Kenya chairperson Jackie Zehra Janmohamed, has said she will not reconsider her decision to step down form the hot seat saying that was a well consulted move. This comes even as acting chairperson Anil Patel and CK executive members asked Janmohammed to rescind her decision. “CK wishes to state its stand on the recent reports circulating that the chairperson Janmohamed had resigned from her position,” said Patel. Janmohamed, who made sporting history in December 2012 by being elected the first female to chair a country cricket board, resigned late last month citing “personal reasons”. Upon her election, Janmohamed, a lawyer by profession, said she believed she could make a difference, hence her acceptance of the post. “Cricket has been a part of me since when I was a child. I grew up watching cricket and since there was no women’s cricket, I moved to umpiring and then administration. Now I wish to step down on grounds I won’t wish to state now, the move was widely consulted, I wish CK, all the best,” said Janmohamed. Janmohamed’s choice was a major shift for the 60-year-old male dominated board.

Dortmund CEO says Mario Gotze deserves respect FRIday, AUGUST 22, 2014
Borussia Dortmund CEO HansJoachim Watzke has criticised his side’s fans over their treatment of Mario Gotze. Watzke feels the current Bayern Munich star deserves more respect. The 22-year-old left BVB for Bayern in the summer of 2013 in a deal worth Sh5.4billion, causing uproar among Dortmund fans. Gotze has since received a hostile reception on his return to the Signal Iduna Park, but Watzke feels the Germany international does not deserve such a welcome. “To be honest, I thought it was

Are drug cheats easily getting back on track?
Former 100m world record holder Asafa Powell returned to the track in Lucerne, Switzerland, last month after an 18-month ban for taking a banned stimulant was reduced to six months on appeal. The Jamaican claimed he felt ‘like a virgin’ before his year away from the sport ended with him finishing third in 10.30sec. Sadly, however, the purity and thrill of watching a man run as fast as is humanly possible vanished a long time ago. It is only the clever work of highly-paid lawyers, hired to take client’s cases to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and get them back on track as soon as possible. This year, Jamaican 400m runner Dominique Blake successfully appealed her six-year ban for taking a banned stimulant to be reduced by 18 months. Three-time Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown also saw a two-year suspension dismissed as CAS berated the ‘deplorable’ mistakes in collecting her positive sample. Powell and fellow Jamaican sprinter Sherone Simpson employed American attorney Paul Greene to fight their

Those who know Mario can all confirm that he doesn’t always come across like the guy he really is. “The BVB hierarchy still have a great relationship with him. 18-month bans. They argued that three months was more appropriate for the ‘minor’ offences because the banned substance, oxilofrine, had been found in a contaminated food supplement, Epiphany D1. Their appeal was partially upheld and the Jamaican Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) has been forced to pay ‘historic’ costs. Lawyer and appeal costs are believed to be ”one of the biggest rewards in the history of CAS.” Sport’s highest authority will reveal the full reasons for its findings in due course. IAAF, athletics’ world governing body, is committed ‘to doing everything in its power to eradicate cheating’ and will return to four-year bans for ‘serious doping offences’ from January 2015. The list of athletes serving drugs bans stretches to 26 pages and IAAF has been testing blood and urine since 2001. When athletes are banned for taking drugs, the default position is still to desperately cling on to the positives and talk of strong messages of zero tolerance those suspensions send out.
Marc Warren (below) hopes the door for being a wildcard pick for next month’s Ryder Cup at Gleneagles remains ajar. The 33-year-old picked up his third European Tour title by winning the Made In Denmark event in Aalborg last Sunday. “Maybe an outside, outside chance,” Warren said. “I’m playing in Italy in two weeks’ time and even if I win there again it would still be an outside chance. We’re still a long way off but it’s nice
to be mentioned in that,” he said. Warren’s two-stroke win in Denmark ended a seven-year wait for his third European Tour success. His previous win came at the Johnnie Walker Championship in 2007 at Gleneagles, where the Ryder Cup will take place at the end of September. “It’s on a golf course I’ve done well on in the past,” said Warren, whose win sees him jump to 68th in the world rankings.

You either stand or sit there while some
very kind and willing assistants pour a big container of ice water over your head, or you make a donation to an ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) charity. The entire thing is filmed, and once the ‘victim’ has recovered from the icy shock, they nominate someone else to take the challenge. Once nominated, the person has 24 hours to do the same thing and post the evidence on social media,
say Twitter, Facebook or YouTube. This way, you prove they’ve gone through with it. Most celebrities have gone through with the challenge but some, like Charlie Sheen, have chosen to donate money instead. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the term used in US to describe Motor Neurone Disease (MND), which affects a person’s ability to move voluntarily.
While the person continues to think and feel, they are often unable to walk, eat or talk. This leaves them effectively ‘locked in’ to their body. About 5,000 people in UK are estimated to suffer from MND. Half of those diagnosed will die in the first 14 months of knowing they have it. There is no known for now. In US, Chris Kennedy, a golfer
from Sarasota, Florida, was nominated by a friend to participate in an ice bucket challenge similar to the one screened live on-air by programme Golf Channel Morning. Kennedy was the first to associate the challenge with ALS because he has a relative suffering from the disease and his video was posted back on July 15.

Crosstown rivals Real, Atletico eye Super cup Carlo Ancelotti says he is confident of lifting the Super Cup trophy tonight at the Calderón despite the 1-1 draw in first leg at the Bernabue on Tuesday. The Italian said Criatiano Ronaldo remains doubtful after picking an injury in the first leg. “They have a slight advantage because we have to score in the Calderón. We’re going to try and score goals there. If we can repeat today’s match we’ll win the Supercup of Spain”. “The team played well in the first leg. In the first half we did not have a huge amount of pace but in the second we did very well. We controlled the match throughout, pressing up front and played well. The three midfielders did very well”.
The coach, in the meantime has talked about the Manchester United target Di Maria while saying its up to the player to decide his future. “As I always say, Di María is a Real Madrid player and I use him as I like and as I think he should be used. He is one of Real Madrid’s biggest players, however whatever decion he makes we will work with it,” he said. Meanwhile Gareth Bale has said he wants the club to improve on their trophy haul from last season and win six trophies in the coming campaign. Madrid won the Copa del Rey and the Champions League in Bale’s first season at the club, with the Welshman bagging winning goals in both finals.
