Activists to expose poaching tycoons Powerful individuals behind the rising poaching of elephants and rhinos may be exposed soon in a new form of fighting the menace. Poaching continues unabated
especially in Africa as demand for elephants tusks and ivory increases in Asian markets. Powerful individuals said to be shielded from police through intricate
connections have often been accused of funding the slaughter. A group of conservationists have developed a new way of exposing the culprits.

Lobby to name poaching lords From Page 1 And the response has been massive. Since it was launched in February, the project has received over 45 tips on these top-end individuals with the first offered within 24 hours of its launch. “We got, for example, a very interesting leak on a very powerful individual in Kenya, linked to the government, who is behind the
ivory trade,” WildLeaks founder Andrea Costa told AFP. Such people “will never be taken out from within. They’re too powerful. You need help from outside. So right now, we’re trying to gather more evidence,” said the former security consultant and longtime conservationist. KWS says more than 150 elephants are dying in the hands of poachers every year. About 100 have been
killed by poachers this year alone. Only last week, the UN Environmental Programme warned over imminent extinction of elephants in the next 100 years if the rising demand for illegal ivory in the growing economies of Asia is not checked. Meanwhile, a study released by the World Conservation Society claims the future of Kenya’s elephants rests with world governments enacting
laws that ban all ivory markets and products. “If we are to conserve significant wild populations of elephants across all regions of Africa, all domestic and international ivory markets need to be closed,” it said in the report. Unep says at least 20,000 elephants are killed every year as poachers pocket billions of shillings from the illicit trade.
Only two months ago, Interpol linked the trade to the increasing wave of terrorist attacks around the world. Insurgents are said to be benefiting from smuggling of wildlife products. Ivory and rhino horn remain coveted products in Asia where they are used as traditional medicine and a symbol of status.
Gay activist feels like a refugee in her country
narrow escape: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) activist Mary Muthui had to escape a rampaging mob after they noticed her “Proudly Lesbian” T-shirt slogan as she walked in a Nairobi street.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) activist Mary Muthui says her constant presence in the press has been positive for the movement. As one of the few lesbians to muster enough courage and declare her status in the media, however, says she, a girlfriend and a 12-year-old son have suffered dearly. Three years ago, reports London’s Independent newspaper, she and a friend were walking down a Nairobi street, when she was approached by a group of men who had noticed her “Proudly Lesbian” T-shirt slogan. Mary had to run after the group attacked. “I crossed the road and kept running. But they caught up and shouted that I should come back and find my friend, who they had grabbed. So I went back and they said: “Let’s go.” They raped us for close to three hours,” she told the Independent. They were nine men. Her son was conceived in a similar attack by six men during which her head was slashed with a machete. She parts her hair to show the three-inch scar where the blade struck. She says it was during the attack when she contracted HIV. Her son was more fortunate, testing negative after he was born – but the insecurity and persecution of his mother’s work affects him every day. “He said to me, ‘mum, why did you choose to be an activist?’ It’s hard. “I love Kenya very much but I am a refugee in my own country.” Mary cannot return home for fear of what her village may do. “Even to kill you is the snap of a finger,” she says.
Group asks State to end Mandera clashes
A humanitarian group operating in Mandera County has asked the national government to quickly end the senseless killing of civilians in northern Kenya. Several people are feared dead after four days of gun fighting in Rhamu town, Mandera North, in clashes between militias of rival Garre and
Degodia clans. Police say only three people have been wounded in the bloodletting that started on Thursday as militias engaged in fierce battles. Although the fighting has subsided, the rivals clashed early today as most residents fled the urban centre. Majority of the victims are
camping at a police station. An official of Rural Agency for Community Development and Assistance (Racida), an NGO operating from Rhamu told X News the conflict is politically instigated. “The problem stems from political disagreements between the clans.
Leaders cannot help because they are naturally inclined to certain sides because of politics,” the source said. Mandera Senator Billow Kerror asked the national government to contain the situation. Fighting reportedly began on Thursday when armed men
attacked the town and injured three people. On Sunday, there was exchange of heavy gunfire amid claims al-Shabaab militiamen involvement. The perennial conflicts between the Garre and Degodia clans of Mandera and Wajir counties have been attributed to border disputes.

US scribe freed after 2 yrs captivity
Selfie craze spawns new apps, gadgets industry
American journalist Theo Curtis has been released after being held captive by al-Nusra militants in Syria since 2012, the US has announced. US Secretary of State John Kerry said he was “relieved and grateful that Theo is coming home”. He added that the US had worked with more than two dozen countries to help secure his release. Last week, another kidnapped US journalist, James Foley was killed by the Islamic State (IS).
The ‘selfie’ craze is taking the world by storm as hundreds of companies are coming up with apps, gadgets and even courses to help users take, share and improve their selfies, creating a new, fast-growing selfie industry. Last year, the Oxford dictionary made the term official, describing it as a “picture that is taken of oneself, usually on a smartphone.” To capitalise on the selfie craze, Selfie Pods, a Plymouth-based company that was launched just two months ago, is selling an extendable arm for taking selfies. The device is also called a “selfie stick” or “monopod”. The Selfie Pod works with any smartphone and the start-up has already sold out of its first batch of 1,000 units. In January, US DJ duo, the Chainsmokers released ‘#Selfie’, a song which sold 865,000 copies in the US alone as of June this year. An now, Kim Kardashian, the one-woman super-brand, is about to publish a book called ‘Selfish’, which will feature her most popular selfies.
State targets 1 m electricity connections by next June One million more Kenyans will be connected to the national power grid by the end of this financial year, the government has said. This is part of the initiative dubbed “The Last Mile” which seeks to have up to 70 per cent of Kenyans connected to power by 2017. Energy and Petroleum Principal Secretary Joseph Njoroge said the process of expanding the network is already underway and that over 400, 000 new customers were connected to the power line last year. Njoroge, however, says connection rates still remain at Sh35,000 for new customers but notes that the power cost is expected to be reviewed by the end of this month. “The ministry of energy is involved in ensuring that the infrastructure – transmission system – is put in time for these 5,000 megawatts,” he stated. “The programme has already

started to give tangible benefits… We did not have enough rains this year; the long rains were much lower than the average rain we received. However, there was no power rationing this year.” He was speaking in Athi River where he witnessed a Sh159 million power upgrade project aimed at stabilising supply to customers within
Nairobi and its surroundings. The project involves regular maintain works and also upgrading of the distribution network. The area has five cement factories, which consume a lot of power. The company will work on 145km of lines constituting 66kv, 33kv and 11kv lines. “This, together with growth
in commercial and domestic customer numbers, has necessitated the upgrade of this network as it is already strained,” he pointed out. Kenya Power Managing Director Ben Chumo on his part said the network will be expanded even more in a bid to accommodate the anticipated 5,000 Megawatts by 2017.

He noted that this will greatly reduce power interruptions to the customers as well as the cost. On the connection cost, Chumo, however, said Kenya Power has signed various agreements with financial institutions to develop appropriate loan facilities to assist potential customers to pay for the new connection.
Police kill 2 suspected thugs in city Two suspected thugs have been shot dead by police in Nairobi. One was killed in Githurai 44 after a mugging spree. Police say the dead gunman was a former hard-core convict on their list of wanted persons. The second man was shot dead this morning at a telecommunication mast in Riruta area. Police say he was in the company of three others and were vandalising a mast. So far 12 suspects have been killed by police in the past five days alone.
73 illegal immigrants arrested
Some 73 people believed to be illegal aliens were yesterday arrested at a roadblock in Mbalambala area at the Kenya-Somalia border. The men and women were walking after being dropped off by a bus when police intercepted them. They are expected in court today to face charges of being in Kenya illegally. Police patrols in the area have been enhanced to tame influx of illegal immigrants, especially from Somalia.
Uhuru in Addis for IGAD summit on South Sudan conflict
President Uhuru Kenyatta is in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for an extraordinary summit of the Governmental Authority on Development ( IGAD) Assembly of Heads of State and Government. The summit is expected to discuss the humanitarian crisis and governance issues
in South Sudan. Uhuru flew to Ethiopia on Sunday from Kampala, Uganda, where he held talks with President Yoweri Museveni and South Sudan President Salva Kiir on the South Sudan peace process, before he addressed a forum of 3, 000 youths from East Africa.
All IGAD members are represented at the summit. Leaders are expected to agree on how to avert a humanitarian crisis in Africa’s newest nation, with IGAD taking the leading role. “They will also discuss governance issues,” Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign
Affairs and International Trade Amina Mohamed said in Addis Ababa. A ministers’ summit preceding the Head of State’s meeting reviewed a report by the IGAD Mediation Team on the conflict in South Sudan. A communiqué on the way forward is expected to be
issued by the leaders at the end of the summit. The meeting is also expected to agree on a framework on further engagement by the South Sudanese players. This month, members of the UN Security Council visited the region and urged Uhuru, who is Igad’s chairman, and
other leaders to intervene in the South Sudan to press for commitment to a peaceful resolution of the eight month crisis in which hundreds have been killed and millions left facing hunger. Fighting broke out when Kirr sacked his vice president Riek Machar.

City Hall tipped on street families
The Nairobi County Government can reduce crime in the city streets by empowering youthful families with professional
skills to clear them off the streets. The county has also been asked to work with children-friendly rehabilitation centres before
reuniting them with their families. Felista Kisilu, a social worker, says past efforts by the County Council to clear the families
failed because they did not offer alternative means of livelihoods. “One cannot combat small crimes committed by street families

Kisilu. The Kwetu Home of Peace Rehabilitation Centre member says as long as the youth remain in the streets, they will continue giving birth and complicate the street menace. Kisilu says children will resist attempts to force them into rehabilitation centres and has asked the government must work with other restoration centres and social workers to voluntarily move them out. The organisations have capacity to visit and convince children to move into the facilities. “Kangethe is one such facility where the children are forcefully taken. The gates are under watch, but they escape because they do not find it friendly or they have been coerced,” she said. Instead of constructing many ineffective centres, collaborating with the available facilities will increase capacity to accommodate more families. Last week, County Education Andrew Mwanthi said plans are underway to construct a rehabilitation centre at Ruai and a school for the street families. Former Vice President Moody Awori initiated a plan to remove the families from the city, but the Government later abandoned the programme. The Joe Aketch Foundation initiated by the former Mayor of defunct County Council has attempted to sweep the streets of the dwellers with little success.
Nacada chiefs differ over killer drinks tests A standoff is looming at the National Authority for Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) over plans to test 3,000 samples of alcohol. Nacada chairman John Mututho claims Nacada managers are deliberately delaying the hiring an international firm to conduct neutral tests on more than 3,000 samples of drinks. Mututho claims the process was yet to start five months after the agency’s board approved the plan. The Board called in international experts due to inconsistent results of tests by the Government Chemist and Kebs.

Ebola scourge spreads as 13 die in the DR Congo
35 Nigerian policemen abducted in Borno State Thirty-five Nigerian policemen are missing following an insurgent attack Saturday on a police training school in Borno State, police said. The Nigeria Police Force said a search-and-rescue mission has been launched after the third attack this month on the Gwoza Training camp in the state, one of the most volatile parts of the West African nation. It was not immediately clear whether anyone had claimed responsibility. Afterward, the force’s Inspector-General, Suleiman Abba ordered that security be tightened at all police facilities in the country.
The Ebola outbreak has now spread beyond West Africa after 13 deaths from the virus were confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Two people tested positive for the virus in the northern town of Gera, a government official announced on Sunday. Three people died in the central Africa nation in the last two weeks of an initially unidentified virus, which tests confirmed to be Ebola. “The results are positive. The Ebola virus is confirmed in DRC,” Health
Minister Felix Kabange said. A lab and quarantine station have subsequently been set up in the town, 1200 kilometers from the capital of Kinshasa. The World Health Organization said the nation did its own tests, and the UN agency’s lab is conducting its own confirmation testing that will also determine the strain of the virus found. Experts have described the West African outbreak as the worst in the history of the virus.

Ex Death Row boss Suge Knight shot 6 times at Chris Brown party American rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight is believed to have been one of three people who were wounded in a shooting at a nightclub in West Hollywood, according to multiple published reports. A Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s deputy confirmed to CNN that the former Death Row
Records CEO was wounded in the shooting early Sunday morning. Witnesses said the 49-year-old Knight was able to walk out of the exclusive 1OAK nightclub, where the shooting occurred, on his own. Citing family sources, TMZ.com reported that Knight underwent surgery at an area hospital after sus-
taining six gunshot wounds. Police sources have not independently confirmed to CBSLA.com on the record that Suge Knight was wounded in the shooting. Two other people, described as a 19-year-old woman and 32-year-old man, were also wounded. All were taken a local hospital for treatment.
DEath RoW! Rapper Suge Knight walked out after being shot.
Ebola first appeared in 1976 in Sudan and Congo, and takes its name from a river with the same name in the latter nation. Congo has had six previous outbreaks since the disease appeared on its shores, the World Health Organization said. Africa has been limited to three strains: Bundibugyo, Zaire and Sudan. Though Congo has had the Zaire strain in the past, it’s unclear whether it’s the same one in the latest outbreak.
WHO said its confirmation testing will likely be done today. When the 13 people died, WHO said at the time that their deaths were a result of a “viral hemorrhagic fever of undetermined origin.” Ebola is one of the world’s most virulent diseases and its confirmation in DRC may prove catastrophic as the country shares borders with nine nations including Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi. Kenya has since suspended its flights to ravaged nations of Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Firm plans expo for diaspora Kenyans
CAPTION: The Wasini Luxury Homes located in Nairobis Westlands Area.
King’s Pride Properties, a leading Nairobi-based real estate developer, will launch the first annual Kenyans Diaspora Homes Expo in New York. The event will tap into the $1.29 billion (Sh109 billion) Kenyans in the diaspora send home every year. The three-day expo, scheduled for August 30 to September 1 at the New Jersey Exposition Centre in New York, is expected to draw at least 300,000 Kenyans living in US. The event will link the residents directly with the market back home while opening up international frontiers to stakeholders in the property sector. Kenyans living in US account for 45
per cent of the total diaspora money transfers, says a June 2014 survey by the Central Bank of Kenya. Those willing to invest in the property market back home face impediments, including lack of information needed to make sound investment decisions. The expo will provide Kenyans seeking to invest back home with access to key stakeholders who offer products tailored to individual needs. “Kenyans abroad find it difficult and expensive to successfully invest in property back home,” says Martha Kanyumba, the Expo Director at Kings Pride Properties. “The Kenyans Diaspora Homes Expo
seeks to erase these obstacles by providing a platform for the Diaspora to engage with exhibitors on the real estate investment opportunities available in Kenya,” she says. The Kenyans Diaspora Homes Expo will showcase a number of affordable opportunities available for Kenyans through partnerships. The event has attracted 20 companies, seven financial institutions, insurance providers and developers keen on gaining access to the diaspora market. The exhibitors include National Bank, Kenya Commercial Bank, CIC Insurance Group and leading real estate franchise RE/MAX.

Paul Gamba, a researcher at the Tegemeo Institute of Agricultural Policy and Development, says food is the most expensive item in a city household’s budget. Along with experts from the Institute, Gamba has confirmed that food takes up at least 20 per cent of a household budget. Items eaten outside the home takes up 22 per cent of the food budget. Gamba says the survey has revealed that an average household earns about Sh2.2 million. This means there are residents who spend up to Sh96,800 a month eating out.

merce market was worth $13billion (Sh1.15 trillion) in 2013. Her online travel accounted for more than 70 per cent of transactions.
The least money earned by a household is Sh1,200. “There was wide dispersion around this mean with household incomes ranging from Sh1,200 to Sh2,184,000 per month,” Gamba and colleagues say. The lowest income earners spend about Sh692 eating out while the wealthiest spend Sh4,237. This is more than six times what the lowest earners spend. Gamba says since incomes and spending patterns vary, the lowest earners can save an average of Sh8,000 a year by eating at home. The highest earners would save an average of Sh51,000.

Rutuba fertiliser helps farmers triple their yield Farmers are using a new affordable organic fertilizer to triple their incomes while insulating themselves from volatile fertilizer prices and insufficient supply in the country. Dubbed Rutuba, the fertilizer has triple the amount of nutrients found in artificial varieties. “While conventional fertiliz-
ers have not more than four plant nutritional elements, Rutuba has 16 which play different roles on the plant life right from when seeds are planted,” Rutuba Marketing Account Manager, Russell Ochieng’, says Common elements in the fertilizer not found in synthetic fertilizers include boron, a nutrient crucial in any plant’s
vegetative and flowering stage. Boron deficiency is the commonest around the world and causes large losses in crop production both in crop value and yields. Rutuba was ranked number one by the Agricultural Society of Kenya show in Kitale in 2012 and has undergone tests by various institutions
including the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) and Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) for the past 10 years. “I would sign a prenup because life is unpredictable. Today you will marry an angel and tomorrow they become a beast.”
Caution fuels pre-nuptials
A pre-nuptial agreement is a contract between two people intending to get married stating what will happen in the event of a divorce especially regarding finances. The pre-nup is usually signed before the wedding. The content of the agreement can vary from couple to couple and no one pre-nup is the same. Drawn up by a lawyer, the pre-nup ensures the protection of finance and assets acquired during and before the

marriage and includes terms for the penalties in the event of a divorce due to adultery or grounds set up by both parties. Bringing up the issue of a prenup can be tricky. Some people may think that one does not have any faith in the marriage working out and can be seen as a selfish move by the other party. “I would sign a pre-nup because life is unpredictable. Today you will marry an angel and tomorrow they become a beast.
You must have a backup plan,’’ says Ruth Akinyi. In Kenya, pre-nuptial agreements are covered under the Matrimonial Property Act, 2013 Section 6. The Act provides for parties to enter into pre-nuptial agreements and also provides that the court may disregard the agreement on grounds of fraud, coercion or injustice. Pre-nuptial agreements are not for the rich only. People
with middle income can also draw pre-nups to protect their finances and assets regardless of how little they have. A pre-nup can also be drawn in the event of determining custody of children from a previous relationship. It is recommended that couples talk extensively about it. Both parties must be honest in their declaration of their finances and assets. If they are not honest, a court of law can throw out the agreement.
Shopping for underwear is one of those pet things for women and when they are out buying these little intimate items of clothing, they tend to do it in bulk and in different colours. However, most hardly discard any of the old ones and thus end up with drawers full of underwear they never wear. Like any other clothing item, underwear also have special memories attached to them thus the reluctance to throw them away. Whatever the reason for clinging to that underthing you no longer wear, there must come a time when you just have to let go. If you have not worn it the last three months, it is most likely you will never wear it again. Toss in the bin and make space for new ones. If the elastic is frilly and so loose you needs a belt to hold it up, or it has gaping holes in it, what’s point of hoarding it? Another good way to weed out the old underwear is to ask yourself if you would be embarrassed to be caught in the pair, if it is yes then throw them far away, in fact burn them.

How to conduct yourself as third wheel in a relationship It may be argued that playing the third wheel on a date is an advantage. One may learn from the couple the do’s and dont’s in a relationship. Others may view it as a way of arousing loneliness and ‘quiet jealousness’ in the third party, who may view some actions to be offensive. But you cannot turn down a friendly couple if they request your company. It will be important to know how to shield yourself from those ‘awkward’ moments in a gentle way. Do the things you like, but your friend resents. You will find fun in the activities because they will be too busy to bother you. For instance if you like pool game, go and play. A TV programme will be most appropriate pool to drown yourself in sleepovers. Immersing yourself in the activities will keep you away from staring at the love doves exchange ‘beaks’. You may find the sights and sounds embarrassing.
Friends may fear first dates. This may make them call on your company. They need to feel safe in you and their new love. You can play it cool from a distance, but remaining watchful. Mouth slips announcing you are their wheel may be distracting to the couple, yet they need you around. They invited you because they know you will be there for them. Do not make them uncomfortable or guilty because they did not drag you along. However, this does not mean they are free to go wild and show you those ‘awkward’ moments. You deserve your place. Signalling your friend that they are tearing borders will be important. Alternatively, you can gently walk away. Popping up with chats about their former exes and past relationships will also ruin their day. It will be malicious. Maybe this is a make-up date after a conflict. Is my boyfriend betraying me by hitting on my sister? I think my boyfriend is hitting on my sister. We have been dating for two-and-a-half years but lately something is off about him. He met my sister a year ago. They barely used to talk but nowadays they even hang out behind my back. My friends have told me whenever I’m away they sneak around a lot. So I
peeped into my sister’s phone and found a text from him. It was not incriminating but it bothers me. I don’t want to ask my boyfriend because he might think I’m heeding to rumours and getting jealous. Do I have a reason to be alarmed? Reply: If this issue is eating you up that
bad, you should confront them but with sufficient evidence. Although it is said where there is smoke there is a fire, do not rely on rumours to pass judgement. Perhaps they are just friends and hesitant of telling you because you might think otherwise. However, your first instincts should keep you cautious just in case something unconventional
is going on. You can talk to your sister calmly about what you have been hearing. Let her tell her side of the story then air your discomfort about the whole thing. You can also clear the air with your boyfriend. If nothing is going on between them then they won’t sneak around anymore. All the best with the two. —CM
touchspot Dating man with kids can be a major sacrifice You have been going out with this terrific man for three months. Then one day, baby calls while you are on a date announcing the girl is unwell. Shock and fear engulf you because you had no idea he was a daddy. Many people freak out when they find out their dates have kids. This is attributed to the baggage, drama and complication that come with exes and kids. “Dating someone with kids is a game changer,” says Tony Kuria. “You cannot do things the way you used to do with your carefree ex.” Kuria thinks it would be so demanding so he can’t dare get involved with a woman with a kid. Rules change when you end up with a man or woman with children. The kids will be a priority and you cannot compete with them. Exes are likely to lurk around too. Since there are other people in your relationship, you should adjust to the changes. You cannot sneak around naughtily doing spontaneous things anytime you want. Unavoidable emergencies are bound to occur and jolt your plans. But if you love each other, compromise and sacrifice will set in. “My boyfriend has a son whose mum is ever around,” says Mary Kamonya.

Asked by the Improper Bostonian if there is difference between theatrical and TV acting, Uzo responded, “No applause. It’s not live, obviously, so that’s huge. It’s taken me time to learn to play into the space of the camera, but I think I’m getting it.” The award winning thespian has a large number of fans who created a trending twitter hashtag #UzoIsOurFavEmmyWinner. yoursay Street preachers jeopardizing the great commision In as much as the constitution guarantees for religious liberty and freedom of expression, street preaching has often become a public nuisance more especially in urban area. They have exploited this liberty to cause untold suffering to their naïve congregation and the general public. The inappropriate selection of locations

Homeboyz new Driftwood 7s cup champions Homeboyz denied Safaricom Series defending champions KCB a hat-trick after whipping the bankers 21-17 in a closely contested final of the Driftwood 7s at Mombasa Sports Club on Sunday. It was sweet revenge for Homeboyz who lost 21-5 to KCB at Dala 7s finals last time out. But victory did not come easy as they had to prevail over unrelenting pressure from the rivals who are still leading the circuit standings despite their loss. Jacob Ojee sent the Bankers ahead but his effort went unconverted before Leonard Mugaisi levelled after Alvin Otieno sent him through with Mike Wanjala converting for a 7-5 lead. KCB bounced back after forcing an error off the Deejays with Ken Moseti scoring and converting to make it 12-7.
Augustine Lugonzo pounced on a loose ball to touch down and put Homeboyz ahead heading into the interval 14-12. KCB were dealt a huge a blow on resumption when creative spark, Moseti, was stretchered off. Homeboyz found confidence with Wanjala scoring underneath the posts as Lugonzo converted for a 21-12 lead. Fabian Olando would score at the death for KCB but the damage had already been done as Homeboyz lifted the third leg of the Safaricom 7s Circuit. Homeboyz winger Lugonzo said the target was to revenge against the bankers which they successfully did. “There was need to bring our best game forward, in the remaining two legs our target is to win them both,” he said.

Kenya international Allan Wanga was the difference as Sudan champions El Merrikh stopped APR 1-0 on Sunday to win the 2014 Cecafa Kagame Club Championships. Wanga netted after 25 minutes following a cross by Mohamed Traore in a match played at the Amahoro Stadium, in Kigali. The Sudan side, who ejected Uganda champions KCCA 3-0 in the semi-finals on penalties, have won the regional trophy twice in 1986 and 1994. “It’s a dream come true for me, last year I won the senior regional tournament with the national team, where I scored both goals in the finals.
Now I get a chance to win at club level barely few months after joining El Merrik, I am humbled,” he said. In a game watched by Rwanda President Paul Kagame, who also contributes Sh5.1m prize money for the tournament every year, the visitors dominated play for longer spells. Traore proved a problem for APR FC defenders and after the interval, APR introduced Isaie Songa for Andrew Buteera, but El Merrikh defenders and Ugandan goalkeeper Salim Omar Magoola stood firm. El Merrikh won Sh2.5m prize cash while APR FC picked Sh1.7m as third placed Police were awarded Sh850,000.

WINNING WAYS: World 800m record holder David Rudisha was in fine form winning the 600m title in Birmigham on Sunday.
Rudisha wins 600m in Birmingham Kabylie striker killed by missile from terraces Investigations have been opened after a Cameroon soccer player Albert Ebosse, died of a head injury inflicted by a missile apparently thrown by his fans at a top-flight league game in Algeria. Confederation of African Football and the player’s club said police will produce a detailed report on the Sunday incident.
Ebosse died in hospital after being hit as players left the field following a 2-1 loss for his club, JS Kabylie. He had scored his side’s equaliser from a penalty before they went on to lose 2-1 at home to USM Alger in the northern city of Tizi Ouzou. The 24-year-old Cameroonian, the leading goalscorer in the Algerian league last
season, was apparently hit by the rock hurled from a section of JS Kabylie supporters angry at their team’s loss. Ebosse was struck as players walked off after the game and fans began throwing rocks at them. He was taken to the hospital around 500 meters away from the stadium, where he died.
Olympic 800m champion David Rudisha won the 600m in 1:13.71 in Sunday’s IAAF Diamond League meet in Birmingham. The world record holder finished just outside the fastest time in the event of 1:12.81 set by American Johnny Gray in 1986. “I thought maybe I would get closer to the world record but it wasn’t a bad performance,” Rudisha said. Steering clear of pacemakers, Rudisha went through 200m in 23.25 before hitting the
400m mark between 46 and 47, bang on his predicted schedule. The task from there, Rudisha had said, was to push over the last 200 metres and that’s what he did, striding ever further away from the field around the bend to raise everyone’s expectations before he tired over the final 50 metres “This is my first 600m, so I guess it was difficult to judge the pace. I think I tried my best,” he said. There were also meeting
records for Kenyans Jairus Birech and Asbel Kiprop in the 3000m steeplechase and one mile respectively. Kiprop also redeemed himself after a bungled race in Marrakech where he finished second behind Djibouti’s Ayanleh Souleiman in the 15000m final. Kiprop’s finish was impressive too as he took the Mile in 3:51.89, following a litany of famous names into the historic book where the event’s winners sign their names.

Wenger hailed his French marksman after he scored the late equaliser in Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Everton at Goodison Park, with the Arsenal manager’s faith in his 27-year-old forward evident in these comments. For me, he’s improving every year and don’t rule it out that he scores 25.” Wenger was again asked whether he would look to add to his striking options in the final week of the transfer window, but he insisted he was looking to strengthen other areas of his squad before the August 31 deadline. “We have Sanogo who will be an important asset, we have Giroud, we have Lukas Podolski, we have

Serena Williams is taking nothing for granted as she vies for a third straight US Open title. Victory would put her alongside two greats of the game. The 32-year-old once known for stepping up her game when it mattered most has thrice been thwarted in 2014 in her bid to join Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova as 18-time Grand Slam singles champions. Although she has lifted five WTA trophies this year, she has failed to make it past the fourth round at the Australian Open, French Open or Wimbledon. So she sounded wary of the suggestion that a return to Flushing Meadows, where she has won five US Open titles, would produce major number 18. But Williams was firing on all cylinders as she won two hardcourt titles in the buildup to the Open, signalling she won’t surrender her crown
Mercedes pair rivalry spills into open warfare Lewis Hamilton (pictured right) claims Nico Rosberg has admitted deliberately crashing into his car in the opening stages of a rancorous Belgian Grand Prix. As open warfare broke out between the Mercedes pair, Hamilton also claimed Rosberg made clear the accident was to “prove a point” after numerous confrontations this season. The Briton, who now trails by 29 points
in the world championship after retiring from the race, in which Rosberg finished second, immediately received the backing of Mercedes in a row which now appears unmanageable for the rest of the season. Toto Wolff, the team executive director, said later that Mercedes would reconsider imposing team orders on the pair and that there would be “consequences” for
Rosberg. Wolff refused to elaborate on what punishment would be imposed, although publicly Rosberg said it was a “racing incident” and that neither party was unduly to blame. A visibly emotional Hamilton said: “We just had a meeting about it, and he basically said he did it on purpose. He said he did it on purpose and he said he could have avoided it.
without a fight. Her straight-sets win over Ana Ivanovic in the final at Cincinnati showed Williams at her dominant best. “At some point of the match, I actually felt quite embarrassed walking from one side to the other for returns,” Ivanovic said of the near-hopelessness of returning Williams’ best serve. It was a long way from Ivanovic’s fourth-round victory over Williams at the Australian Open, where the American was hindered by back pain. Back trouble, a humbling second-round exit at Roland Garros, and the virus that left her weak and woozy in doubles after her shock third-round singles exit at Wimbledon, are all in the past, Williams said. “I’m in some of the best shape I’ve been in,” said the world number one. “I can play long points and be ready to go again. I feel really fit — 32 is the new 22, right?”

New found rivalries as City host Liverpool Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has brushed aside suggestions that Liverpool lost the Premier League title last season rather than his team winning it The season proper starts at the Etihad tonight when Liverpool are the visitors in the first head-to-head between genuine title contenders. Manchester City and Liverpool were the stories of last season, certainly its memorable closing stages, and though Manuel Pellegrini’s side ended up on top and the manager is in a position to let bygones be bygones – “last season is finished, for us and for Liverpool” – it only takes the slightest of prompts to reopen the rivalry. The suggestion that the title was lost by Liverpool rather than won by City, for instance, brings out the competitor in Pellegrini, as does any sympathy for Steven

Gerrard, whose slip against Chelsea was popularly seen as the turning point in the contest for the championship. “I don’t think so,” Pellegrini said. “Of course, Gerrard was unlucky in that game, but Liverpool were not unlucky to miss out. When they beat us 3-2 at Anfield and people said they would go on to win the league. Liverpool might have been unlucky against Chelsea but they were lucky to win against us” Pellegrini insists there’s more to City’s championship pedigree than the deep pockets. “People think it’s just about money but it’s not. You need a strong squad if you are going to challenge for the title, and that costs money. Other teams have spent more than us and still not won. You still have to sign the right players, you still have to perform as a team,” the Chilean says.
