Critics fault anti-terror campaign

Kenya’s strategy in the war on terror has come under fire, as Human Rights Watch released a report that draws links between the anti-terror unit and at least 10 killings and 10 cases of forced disappearances in Kenya. Leslie Lefkow, Deputy Director of the Africa Division of Human Rights Watch, says the country’s approach appears to be skewed against some communities. P2

Critics fault anti-terror campaign From Page 1 “Instead of investigating and prosecuting these and other killings, security forces regularly commit awful abuses against communities based on ethnic profiling,” she said. Mwambi Mwasaru, the Executive Director of the Mombasa-based Muslims for Human Rights, told the publication that perceived lack

of justice is hardening anti-Western and anti-Kenyan sentiment among the population that is required to fight extremism. “The Government is radicalising the people,” he claimed. “It doesn’t matter if the guy is a devil or an angel. We are saying due process should be followed,” Mwaseru claimed in an interview with US daily LA Times.

Among the reasons offered for the increasing reports of terrorist activities include apparent unbalanced allocation of resources. “Muslims do not feel they are being represented fairly in the way State resources are allocated,” Abdullahi Halakhe, a security analyst, told the Times. “It’s an opportunity for recruitment by Al Shabab.” Asked about the killing of several

individuals suspected to be propagating terror activities, Kenya officials denied any involvement. “Just because an individual was summoned for normal interrogation by police on terrorism, then they were later killed, does not mean the killers are police,” Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa told the Times.

Jonathan Horowitz, one of the authors of the Open Society report, said he believed Kenyan security officials were taking “shortcuts” in the face of rising extremism. “The Government’s response seems to be, ‘Let’s use more unlawful violence and not hold our security forces responsible for not following the rule of law,” he said.

What every mother should know about breech delivery Every expectant woman attending routine ante-natal clinics should be informed by experienced gynaecologists of the presentation of foetus in the 36thweek of pregnancy. The foetus’ head usually faces downwards (vertex position) as it prepares for a vaginal birth. But in about three to four per cent of pregnancies, the opposite occurs as the baby’s feet or buttocks are positioned at the birth canal. This is known as breech presentation which poses risks to mother and child during delivery. Dr Joseph Musana, a gynaecologist at Aga Khan University Hospital, who regularly deals with difficult pregnancies says: “In normal circumstances, foetuses turn to the vertex position as early as 28 weeks, with most rotating by the 36th week. In some cases, the baby ‘swims’ to the right approach late in pregnancy before labour.” “The presentation of a baby is detected by palpation where a doctor and a midwife feel the position of the head using hands. A confirmation of the position of a foetus is done by ultrasound.” “On realising that a baby is in breech position, the doctor may advise the mother to visit the clinic in a week or two for repeat tests. If there is no change in a foetus’ position at 38 weeks,

the mother is advised to go for caesarean section surgery as the safest method of delivery.” “Only five to eight per cent of women whose foetuses are in breech presentation turn just in late pregnancy, or before labour starts. The longer the wait for a baby to turn position, the lower the chances of a foetus rotating.” “A scheduled c-section delivery is usually carried out during the 39th week of the pregnancy, but some women resist the cut and insist on giving birth naturally. In such cases, the doctor may suggest the expectant mother to have an External Cephalic Version (ECV), also known as version, to help the baby turn before the due date,” says Dr Musana. “ECV is the controlled careful turning of a foetus from a breech position, or side-lying (transverse) into a head-down position before labor begins. When successful, the version makes it possible for a vaginal birth.” “An ECV should be done by obstetricians who are versed with ECV at well-equipped maternity wards with facilities such as a theatre, portable ultra-sound machines and a cardiotocography (CTG) machine which monitors a baby’s heart beat and a team consisting of a paediatrician, anaethesist and midwife,” Dr Musana says.

Medics remove 36-year-old ectopic foetus from mother A 60-year-old woman has been operated on to remove a foetus from an ectopic pregnancy she has been carrying since 1978, the Times of India has reported. For two months leading up to the surgery, the woman had complained of abdominal pains. She had a palpable hard mass which was initially suspected to be cancerous. Doctors immediately performed imaging and testing that showed the mass was not cancerous but calcified skeletal

remains of a foetus. “It was after the patient underwent a MRI that the doctors could make out that the mass was in fact a child’s skeleton,” Murtaza Akhtar, head of surgery, told The Times. The woman conceived at 24 years of age, although the pregnancy was ectopic. She, unsurprisingly miscarried after doctors had told her she needed immediate surgery. She returned to her village home for treatment. “We asked for a detailed medical

history and the patient’s brother told us in 1978 she was pregnant and had some complications,” the head of the surgical team, B S Gedam, told The Times. It is not known exactly how far along the pregnancy was before it aborted. Live Science reports that this could be a case of stone baby, or lithopedion. Depending on the size of the foetus, the mother’s body might not have been able to readily reabsorb embryonic tissues. Rather than risk

infection, a layer of calcium instead begins to form around the foetus to protect the mother. This is rare in more developed areas, as most ectopic foetuses are surgically removed. This is likely the longest recorded time span a woman has carried around ectopic foetal remains. The doctors found a case from Belgium in which a woman was operated on to remove the skeleton after 18 years, making the case of 36 years unprecedented.

BBC Radio 2 reveals greatest guitar melodies of the last 50 years BBC Radio 2 has revealed the top 100 “greatest guitar riffs” in musical history in a list that spans more than half a century, as voted for by listeners. A guitar riff is a cluster or sequence of notes or chords used in a song. Led Zeppelin, an English rock band formed 1968, won the title of the best melody from their song, ‘Whole Lotta Love’. It has been voted the greatest guitar riff (melody) of all time. The rock classic came out top from a list drawn up by a panel of Radio 2 and 6 music DJs, critics and record producers. The melody, ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ by Guns ‘N’ Roses was second in the poll, while ‘Back in Black’ by rock band, AC/DC, came third. Led Zeppelin’s guitarist Jimmy Page said he was “knocked out” by winning the vote. Other riffs on the list included the famous melody from the song ‘Purple Haze’, which was written and performed by famous African-American artist, Jimi Hendrix.

Ruto warns pay crisis could cripple counties

Salaries of county assemblies workers around the country could be delayed after the regional governments said they have not yet received funds allocated by the central government. Council of Governors chairman, Isaac Ruto raised the alarm yesterday warning that the delay could cause adverse repercussions in the devolved governments. Mr Ruto, who is also the governor for Bomet, said the delayed disbursement of funds to the counties is to blame. Should the salaries delay, it would be the second time the devolved units have failed to pay their workers in time. “The Council of Governors would like to make it very clear to the public that the challenge in paying salaries and meeting other operational costs at the counties is due to lack of these funds,” he told the press in Westlands, Nairobi. Mr Ruto explained that

police: Mandera wars a spillover from ethiopia The inter-ethnic clashes pitting the Garre and the Degodia clans of Mandera County is a spillover of similar skirmishes between the two communities in Ethiopia. Deputy Inspector General of Police Grace Kaindi said investigations have so far not linked local politicians to the clashes as was earlier claimed. “The way the conflict is emerging shows it is just a spill-over into Kenya. It actually started in Ethiopia where the same communities are represented. This is spillover into our country and we are dealing with it,” Kaindi said.

Meru county leaders oppose miraa regulation Leaders from Meru County have opposed attempts to regulate chewing of miraa. The National Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse has proposed miraa, now classified as a drug, be chewed only between 5 pm and 11 pm to control its use. But Igembe Central MP, Kubai Kiringo has said no leader, farmers or traders will heed Nacada’s suggestion, even if it is adopted.

2014, which is supposed to okay the disbursement of money to the counties has not been signed by President Uhuru Kenyatta after MPs made changes that require

the senate to look at it afresh. The county governments may be forced to negotiate for overdrafts from commercial banks to get funds to operate until the funding delays are

sorted out. Meanwhile, the public servants union has warned that its members could withdraw their service if their salaries are not paid by end of next week.

Candidates in Brazil’s presidential election yesterday took part in the first televised debate of the campaign. Incumbent President Dilma Rousseff went head to head with main rivals Marina Silva of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) and Aecio Neves of the PSDB. No knock-out blows were reported with all the candidates displaying some individually strong moments. Ms Rousseff is ahead in the polls salted for October 5, 2014 although analysts predict it will go to a second round. Ms Silva has replaced the former PSB candidate Eduardo Campos, who died in a plane crash earlier this month.

Judiciary accused of shielding disgraced members of the bench The judiciary has been accused of shielding judges who have been declared unsuitable to continue serving. The Judges and Magistrates vetting board yesterday said more than 15 judges and

magistrates whom it had declared unfit to serve are still drawing salaries despite having been dismissed. In a training session with journalists at the Laico hotel on Tuesday, the Sharad Raoled board said the judiciary

is reluctant to implement its decisions. “Some magistrates who were suspended are still on the payroll and driving government vehicles yet they were declared unsuitable,” Abdirashid Abdullahi, a

member of the board, said. He said that since the judges’ review applications were dismissed, the judiciary ought to have removed them from service. The magistrates have however, gone to court to

challenge the decision to send them home with their cases still pending. The board dismissed them on grounds of accepting bribes, poor knowledge of the law and its application among other inadequacies.

Board chairman Sharad Rao called on the public to come out and provide concrete evidence especially those touching on corrupt activities of the judges. “People have been reluctant to come forward,” Rao said.

MP’s Bill makes Cabinet a politicians-only club The next Cabinet could be made up of politicians and not professionals if a new Bill that has been approved by the Speaker of the National Assembly is passed. The Bill wants Cabinet Secretaries picked from among Members of Parliament, unlike in the current system where ministers are not MPs. Speaker Justin Muturi has approved the Bill and directed the Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs to scrutinise it. The Bill, which is being pushed by Lugari MP Ayud Savula, seeks to amend Article 153 (3) of the Constitution that says a Cabinet Secretary shall not be an MP. Kenya has been picking Cabinet ministers from among MPs since independence before drafters of the new constitution promulgated in 2010 changed the provision to ensure only

professionals picked from outside Parliament become members of the Cabinet. But Savula argues that legislators have more public interest to drive Government agenda unlike technocrats whom, he claims, have a loose touch with ordinary Kenyans. He said the performance of Cabinet secretaries in past one-and-a-half years has shown continued loss of touch with ordinary citizens, making it difficult to push through government agenda. “MPs are by default, accountable to the people and in the public interest since they are elected representatives,” the first-time MP said. The Justice committee chaired by Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkonga will interrogate the Bill even as Parliament goes on recess. Should the team endorse it, debate on the Bill is likely to begin in three months.

Ukraine, Russia move to end border dispute The long-running crisis between Ukraine and Russia over control of their joint border could end soon after the former announced the formation of a roadmap to end fighting between her troops and pro-Russian separatists. Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko (pictured below) made the announcement after holding his first direct talks on the crisis with President Vladimir Putin in Belarus. Putin said Russia would assist in the talks, but stopping the war was a matter for Ukraine itself. Ukraine and the West accuse Russia of arming the rebels, a claim repeatedly denied by Kremlin. “A roadmap will be prepared in order to achieve, as soon as possible, a ceasefire regime which absolutely must be bilateral in character,” Poroshenko said after talks with Putin in Belarusian capital, Minsk. Earlier this year, Poroshenko declared a unilateral ceasefire but accused the rebels of not following suit. In a statement on his website after the talks, Poroshenko said: “Our main goal is peace. We are demanding decisive actions which will bring peace on Ukrainian soil.” “The logic of a peace plan was after all supported by all the heads of state without exception.” Meanwhile, Putin told a news conference that “Russia will do everything to support this peace

process if it starts”. But he stressed that it was up to the government in Kiev and separatist leaders in the east to work out conditions for a truce. The two leaders reportedly agreed to hold further consultations between Ukraine’s and Russia’s border guard agencies. Mr Poroshenko has insisted that the only way to end the bloodshed and stabilise the region is by establishing effective border controls. The meeting came as part of a summit taking place under the auspices of the Moscow-led Eurasian Customs Union, which includes Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Israel, Palestinians strike deal for long-term truce A long-term ceasefire has been agreed between Israel and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip. The truce, ending seven weeks of fighting that has left more than 2,200 people - mostly Palestinians - dead, was brokered by Egypt and began at 19:00 local time (16:00 GMT). Hamas said the deal represented a “victory for the resistance”. Israel is to ease its blockade of Gaza to allow in aid and building materials, Israeli officials said. Indirect talks on more contentious is-

sues, including Israel’s call for militant groups in Gaza to disarm, will begin in Cairo within a month. The US gave the full backing to the deal, with State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki saying: “We strongly support the ceasefire announcement.” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also welcomed the truce. But in a statement via his spokesman, Mr Ban warned that “any peace effort that does not tackle the root causes of the crisis will do little more than set the stage for the next cycle of violence”.

The breakthrough came as both Israel and the Palestinians continued to trade fire. A last-minute volley of mortar shells from Gaza killed an Israeli civilian and wounded six others in Eshkol Regional Council, medics told the BBC. Earlier on Tuesday, at least six Palestinians were killed in a series of Israeli air strikes in Gaza, Palestinian officials said. Palestinian officials said Egypt’s ceasefire proposal called for an indefinite end to hostilities, the immediate

Republicans to sue Obama House Republicans announced that law firm BakerHostetler will represent them in a lawsuit against President Barack Obama. The Republicans authorized the lawsuit in a partisan vote last month. They argue that Obama’s executive orders in a number of areas were unlawful because it’s the job of Congress to make or change laws. But they believe his handling of the Affordable Care

Act gives them the best chance at proving their case, and are basing the suit on that issue. The president, along with Democrats in Congress, say the suit is a politically motivated waste of tax payer funds. House Administration Committee Chair Candice Miller signed a contract that agrees to pay the firm $500 (Sh45,000) per hour for “all reasonable attorney time” needed for the Congress-funded lawsuit.

WHO experts warn the products might pose a threat to adolescents and the foetuses of pregnant women. They want legal steps taken to end the use of e-cigarettes indoors - both in public spaces and in work places.

EAC boss roots for 24-hour economy

Kenya may soon have a 24-hour economy with workers and traders operating round the clock. The move could provide employment for up to 16 million jobless people. Dr Richard Sezibera, the East Africa Community (EAC) Secretary General, has asked regional private and public sector players to consider embracing the ideals of a 24-hour-economy to accelerate economic growth. The EAC boss, who spoke during the launch of regional retailer, Nakumatt Holdings, 50th branch opening in Arusha, Tanzania, at the weekend, said relying on 8 to 12hour economic production cycle is slowing down growth. Sezibera said East Africa’s economy should not be shut overnight as rival economies operate round the clock. “At the East Africa Community, we are working hard to support economic development by clearing Non-Tariff barriers and we are actively working to encourage both the private and public sector to adopt a 24 hour approach to business and service delivery,” Dr Sezibera said. “Companies such as Nakumatt has played a key part in fostering innovative practices such as roundthe-clock operations which can be easily emulated by other private and public sector players,” he said.

the first Action Comics were printed but only around 50 unrestored original copies are thought to have survived, and this was described as the best preserved one. New York dealers, Metropolis Comics, said they bought it. It beat the previous record of $2.1m (Sh186 million) set by another copy of the same comic in 2011. The record-selling copy had

been kept in a cedar chest in a home in West Virginia after being bought in 1938, says seller Darren Adams. After the owner’s death, the family sold it to a dealer in the early 1980s and it was eventually sold to Mr Adams, who runs the Pristine Comics shop in Washington State. Stephen Fishler of Metropolis Comics told the Associated Press the opportunity was “just

too good of an opportunity to pass up”. “It’s the first time anybody saw what a superhero was like.” The edition sold in 2011 was also rated nine out of 10 but its pages were faded. One per cent of the proceeds of the latest sale will go to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, the paralysis charity named after the late Superman actor and his wife.

90pc of smart device users don’t protect sensitive information Nine out of every 10 internet users have highly sensitive information on their hand-held or smart devices. They are concerned that it may be compromised or exposed, digital security company Kaspersky has revealed. Kaspersky conducted an online survey between May and June of this year and gathered information from smartphone, tablet and computer users in 23 countries around the world. “The findings were eye opening,” said Tony Bradley principal analyst with the Bradley Strategy Group, providing analysis and insight on tech trends. Approximately six in 10 respondents cited fears their personal data may be stolen, and roughly that same percentage claimed to be worried their devices may be used to spy on them and infringe on their personal privacy. Eight out of 10 people surveyed conduct financial transactions online, and half of those people stated they also engage in financial transactions from

mobile devices. Despite the fears and concerns about sensitive information and online financial transactions, many users aren’t doing anything about it. The announcement comes at a time when wireless internet sevices (WiFi) are available in many urban areas across Kenya. The popularity of internet services in the country is growing dso fast that even matatus have free WiFi. More than 60 per cent of those surveyed do not take precautions when using free public Wi-Fi networks. A good percentage of users don’t even password protect their Windows or Mac PCs, tablets or smartphones. They do not buy anti-virus software to protect them from hackers and viruses. “That will be a problem when those users end up compromised and blame the financial institution or online service, rather than accepting responsibility for the choices they made,” says Bradley.

To be eligible for a loan, one must have a regular salary on permanent and pensionable terms in a reputable organization. “You get up to six years to repay the loan,” says an agent for the lender. The interest rates that the borrower will pay are calculated on a reducing balance basis and no security is needed. It also comes with a Retrenchment Insurance Policy. To get the cash, National Bank customers need proof of income in the form of their payslips for the last three months, a copy of their ID or passport, one passport size photograph and a letter of introduction from their employer on the company letter head.

Farmers in Vihiga are using a new maize variety to curb a devastating weed commonly known as ‘Purple Witch’ or Striga. In an effort to save over 70 per cent of their infested arable land, a local group, the Mwangaza Farmers Group Organization (MFAGRO), which is offering extension services to the farmers in the county. “Many of our land was infested with this weed and

in order to ensure food security in the area, we had to find mitigating measures to save our staple crop,” explained Dick Morgan, the head of the group. The initial breakthrough came with the development of a maize variety that was tolerant to the striga weed. It is from this concept that scientists from Maseno University, led by Professor George Odhiambo and the International Maize and

Wheat Improvement Centre, merged their efforts to acquire a long lasting solution. The team managed to develop a maize variety that is proving to be a solution to the menace due to its ability to kill the ‘purple witch’, a parasite weed that only survives on the body of the hosts, like maize, sorghum, rice and sugarcane.

Semi-glossy satin p for durable, gentle

Indoor and outdoor finishing with satin paint assures you of durability for your home. Satin, which is a semi glossy paint, is resistant to water. This property gives it the ability to withstand rain, which deteriorates paint. Paint that does not resist moisture peels off. Paint that does not let moisture drip off harbours moulds, which reduce the lifespan of the paint.

Make your guests feel comfortable, welcome Guest rooms may not need to look or feel palatial, yet some little tweaks can make guests feel welcome. The room should be a private retreat where a cup of tea and a catnap are pure pleasure. A few thoughtful touches and decorating tricks will make visitors feel right at home. To ensure your guests enjoy a good night’s sleep, use cotton sheets. Launder new linen several times before guests arrive; the more linens are washed, the softer they get. A small bedside bouquet or arrangement will fill the air with an inviting fragrance and add a pop of colour. Make sure the room is lit with a good reading lamp and other sources of soft light, such as

sconces. A single overhead light can make a room feel cold, rather than warm and comfy. A large pile of pillows on the bed looks inviting, but is also a challenge to visitors during time to make the bed. Dress your guest bed simply with pairs of pillows that are neatly arranged. If you want to offer extra toppings, such as quilts, stack them in the closet for easy access. Whether they are family or friends, guests need to know they can retreat to the bedroom for peace and quiet without having to curl up on the bed. Offer comfortable seating with an upholstered wing chair tucked in a corner. A side table to hold a beverage and books is a must.

The moisture resistance property makes satin paint best for water-prone areas like the kitchen

Heavy traffic areas at home are bound to be stained. ear, don’t waste it

Home spaces keep diminishing despite your growing demand to bring in trendy items and accommodate more visitors with comfort. Saving this shrinking space calls for deliberate measures in all rooms to make every space count. Dual furniture are trending. Having a sofa bed saves the pain of having to squeeze your visitors into the children’s bedroom or fighting with the living room furniture to create space for the mat. It will also save you the shame of knocking the door of your neighbour requesting them to put up your extra visitors. Pull-out drawers in beds and dining tables can be essential storage options. Items that are not regularly used can be relegated to these drawers especially drawer beds. Folding chairs and tables make your space flexible. Dining tables and chairs can be put aside to create

more space for other purposes. A dining room can be turned into a guest room just by frogging those dining chairs and lumping them at the corner before and unfolding the relevant furniture. The same dining room can be converted into a bedroom with inflatable beds, which can be deflated once the visitors are gone. Most of these items are made from wood or metal fabrications, and they are durable and convenient besides giving your home a trendy look. Harmonising rooms that perform related purposes will not only save space for you, but also give you the convenience you need in locating some accessories. For instance it makes no sense to separate a study room from a home office. Putting them together makes your work easier especially if you are on research and you need to refer to your library.

A separate pantry and kitchen will in some way duplicate roles. Hammering cabinets into the walls and pull-out drawers into the kitchen table will give you space for other purposes instead having separate cupboard and pantries. The pantry now can be turned into a store or any other need that may arise. Hanging your flat screen TV allows you to utilize your house better. The rotating arm gives you the freedom to tilt it to the best view angle to suite your location of sitting. It will not tax you stand space. Spaces below the stair cases are not given attention. They go to waste as you strive to get more space for storage. Remember and utilise them. Selling out the items you seldom use will create room for new and stylish furniture. If you do not use them, you do not need them then.

Diana Opoti’s 100 days of African fashion WEDNESday, AUGUST 27, 2014

They say that if you can sustain anything you set your mind on for 100 days, you can achieve your ultimate goal. Maybe this belief came from the expression ‘giving it 100 (per cent)’. We spoke with Diana Opoti, owner of a fashion PR firm and host of a TV show on M-Net on her 100 Days (of African Fashion) Challenge.

I have worn clothes by up-and-coming designers such as Katungulu Mwendwa, Maisha Concept and Wambui Mukenyi. You share information and also champion new designers. What is in it for you? Fashion labels ask me to push specific garments they are launching for this season and they are happy to pay for the endorsement. Some see me as someone who can connect them to brands – so without planning it, I am already running a small personal shopper and style concierge consultancy. It really is a win-win situation.

Describe yourself to us; who is Diana Opoti? I studied Communications in Daystar University and became a senior content producer on the Patricia Show and later a Series Producer for Mashariki Mix. Afterwards, I started my own television series – Designing Africa. I run a fashion media communication agency, Artemis Media, through which I produce the TV show. The decision to take on fashion PR as a service follows the rapid growth of African fashion business.

How did you get Martini to support your mission? My campaign message aligned well with their strategy to support homegrown talent and fashion is a great connect for their lifestyle brand.

What is your personal sense of style like? I love elegant classics – stylish without having to be trending. I am obsessed with prints – African inspired, geometrics; anything that’s printed and beautiful is likely to catch my eye.

How have you managed to create a distinction between ‘work’ and ‘life’? It is impossible to spot me at any event that is not primarily about fashion – but even then, I am extremely selective of the events I attend. Work, for me, is actually fun – I’m paid to sit on fashion competition panels and I get to watch as new brands rise.

Congratulations on completing two months in your 100 Days Chalenge. Why did you start this campaign? How did the idea come to you? 100 Days of African Fashion was created to show the diversity of African fashion. I have researched the fashion consumer market and I was surprised at how many people were making assumptions about African fashion. I wanted to provoke followers to go beyond just liking to buying products.

By Viv Groskop So you want to challenge yourself for 100 days of meaningful change? Here are few tips to see you through. l Pick a challenge that is meaningful to you and tell yourself that you’re going to make through this challenge consistently for 100 Days. Keep reminding yourself; it’s only one day at a time for just over three months. And once those days are over, you can choose to do something else.

2

As a devoted campaigner for African brands and labels, have you achieved what you had hoped to achieve? I have created conversations on what African fashion is—the variety of styles— and it is financially paying off. There is a demand for these brands and my primary mission is to see them get the attention they deserve.

Which designers have you showcased far? I have worn clothes by Chrsitie Brown David Tlale, Anisa Mpungwe, Thula Sindi, Doreen Mashika, Kiko Romeo, Mina Evans and Adele Dejak, among others. In addition,

For our reader, the young fashion enthusiast, what advice do you have? Be clear about what you want your brand to represent and create a business structure around it.

01: Custom made red dress by Wambui Mukenyi with Adele Dejak’s accessories, cow horn cuffs with gold leaf and a bone and brass kija necklace. 02: Edgy suit from Rwandese designer Mille Colline 03: Black Dress, a designer collaboration; designed by Ann McCreath of Kiko Romeo and hand painted by Sudanese artist Eltayeb Dawelbait 04: Summer Dress designed by Katungulu Mwendwa for African Mystique Ltd

l On a piece of paper, write down all the days from one to 100. Note down what you will do for each day to honor your commitment. Flag up any flash points: how will you continue your challenge if you travel out of town? What else might get in your way? l Have a back-up plan if things go wrong. What if you fall ill and miss a day or two? How can you fit in a double or triple commitment the next day to get back on track?

Where do you get your drive? I love beautiful clothes.

When was Day One of the campaign? Was it special? Day One was June 23rd. The day before was the special one. That’s when I made the announcement that I will be launching the campaign. The most significant day was day 25! I announced our quarter milestone and people were so excited for me – I realized the campaign was about more than just me.

Ghost workers need to be dealt with once and for all Workers’ go slows have fanged into the flesh of several county governments due to unpaid salaries even as the national government pledges to weed out ghost workers as from next week. County government bosses are blaming the national

government for delayed remittance of funds to these devolved units. Are they calling for money to pay ghosts? One wonders why the digital government must take more than one year to hook these jinns who are drowning public funds into their bellies,

pushing service delivery to the graveyard in go-slows. If precaution is not taken, the same economic fraudsters will discreetly creep into the digitalised public servants payroll and engorge themselves as before. For sure this time they will not be noticed.

The wage bill will continue protruding and the government will call for pay cuts. Pay cuts and high taxes are justified if they ameliorate the sick in hospitals, unsafe security agents, the hungry farmers and the killer roads.

The Argentina international, 26, is in Manchester and did his medical on Tuesday morning, after which the move - which will take United’s summer spending to Sh19.3billion - will be confirmed. He could make his debut away to Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday. The fee will eclipse the Sh7.3billion Chelsea paid Liverpool for striker Fernando Torres in 2011. United last broke the British transfer record when they paid Leeds Sh4.2billion for Rio Ferdinand in 2002. The Old Trafford club have so far secured left-back Luke Shaw, midfielder Ander Herrera and Di Maria’s Argentina team-mate Marcos Rojo for a combined Sh10.5billion this summer. “Di Maria has not trained with us today and he came in to say goodbye to the players and people at the club,” said Real boss Carlo Ancelotti on Sunday. The decision is his and the club has done what it could to keep him here.” Di Maria injured a thigh in Argentina’s World Cup quarter-final win over Belgium but was still named on the 10man shortlist for the Fifa player of the tournament award.

He joined Real from Benfica for Sh5.3billion in 2010, and won La Liga in 2012 and the Champions League last season. Former Real president Ramon Calderon said he “does not like” the idea of Di Maria leaving, adding: “Normally a club

who owns the very good players don’t like to sell them.” The 26-year-old will go straight into the squad for Saturday lunchtime’s trip to Burnley and adds some much-needed quality to Louis van Gaal’s squad.

Algerian league stopped after Cameroonian player is killed The Algerian Football Federation has suspended football indefinitely following the death of Cameroonian player Albert Ebosse, who was hit by a stone thrown by fans. Ebosse, 24, was struck on the head as players left the pitch after his side JS Kabylie’s home defeat by USM Alger in Tizi Ouzou on Saturday. Algerian authorities had ordered the indefinite closure of the 1st November 1954 stadium. The ruling will apply to all stadiums in the country. The federation has also decided that Sh8.5million will be given to Ebosse’s family - a figure believed to be the amount he would have earned over the period of his contract. In addition, JS Kabylie’s players will each donate a month’s salary. An investigation into Ebosse’s death, and a deeper inquiry into football hooliganism in the country, has been ordered by the Algerian interior ministry. The said 1st November 1954 stadium was under maintenance at the time of the game and fans threw loose stones that were lying on the ground. It is understood that one of the key questions to be asked by the investigation will be why the venue was used when construction works were still in progress. Referee loses assualt case against banned Sparki Youth coach An assistant coach accused of assaulting a match official rendering him impotent has been acquitted by a Mombasa Law Court. Daudi Kajembe, a former assistant coach with lower division side Sparki Youth, was set free in the Kenyan coastal city for lack of evidence. He was accused of kicking referee Martin Wekesa Shikuku in the private parts during a division one match on September 22, 2012. Shikuku was about to send off a player the team of the accused.

In a one-hour ruling read by Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate; Justice Irene Ruguru, the court dismissed the charges after the prosecution’s key evidence was ruled inadmissible. The magistrate listed four grounds in which she dismissed the case that could not sustain the charges of causing grievous bodily harm. The attack happened two minutes to the end of the match between fierce rivals Sparki and Admiral at the Tudor Day Grounds. Football Kenya Federation

Kenya Netball Federation (KNF) officials have been left disappointed after last minute cancellation of an international netball coaching and umpiring course that was scheduled for August 25-September 1 in Nairobi. The KNF said the cancellation was called by International Netball Federation due to fears over Ebola epidemic in parts of West Africa. “We regret to inform you that due to Ebola outbreak in West Africa, International Netball Federation and the

African Netball Federation have postponed the planned course indefinitely. We shall communicate to you immediately they reschedule the same,” the KNF said in a statement to the press. Lilian Anupi, the KNF secretary general said the cancellation is a blow to the local body. She confirmed that no participant from outside the country had arrived by the time of cancellation. Pacquiao gears up for Algieri showdown

Manny Pacquiao and Chris Algieri are on a two-week, globe-trotting tour to promote their welterweight title clash in November. When Pacquiao met news reporters in Macau on Tuesday, questions about his elusive mega fight with the undefeated US Floyd Mayweather elicited a sharp response. “Who’s that?” Pacquiao joked, when Mayweather was mentioned by reporters. Pacquiao’s hall-of-fame trainer Freddie Roach was less jovial, conceding bluntly that the two boxing legends, both in the twilight of glittering careers, may never be seen

in the same ring. “We can’t waste our time waiting for him,” Roach said.. “We’ve done everything we could to make that fight happen. It’s like, we’re available if he’s interested in it, but again we can’t sit around waiting for him.” Eight-division world champion Pacquiao’s next date is a World Boxing Organization welterweight title defence against Algieri. Algieri, is the undefeated WBO junior welterweight title-holder, their fight will be on November 23 in Macau’s Cotai Arena. The pair were in Macau on Monday and Shanghai on Tuesday, and they

Midfielder Jack Wilshere believes the result puts them in perfect frame of mind to wrap up the tie with Besiktas. “This is a fantastic point and now we have a big game on Wednesday and this will give us great confidence going into that,” the England midfielder said after the match at Goodison Park. “We never give up and at this level that is massive. Atletico coach Simeone to serve eight-match ban

Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has been hit with a total ban of eight matches following his conduct during the Supercopa de Espana clash with Real Madrid. Simeone was sent from the dugout in the first half of the second leg at the Vicente Calderon on Friday after arguing with officials on the touchline. He then patted the fourth official on the head and sarcastically applauded the referee before heading to the stands. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has deemed it fit to punish him for four separate acts of misconduct, totalling an

It’s straight into action at Burnley for new boy Di Maria

Manchester United have completed the signing of Real Madrid ace Angel Di Maria, who becomes the most expensive signing in Premier League history. The Argentina international, who can play across the frontline and in midfield, moves to Old Trafford in a deal worth Sh8.7 billion and is now the fifth-costliest player ever. The Argentine winger had a medical in Manchester on Tuesday and has signed a five-year deal. Di Maria is likely to make his debut on Saturday against Burnley in the Premier League. The 26-year-old said United were “the only club that I would have left Real Madrid for”. “Louis van Gaal is a fantastic coach with a proven track record of success and I am impressed by the vision and determination everyone has to get this club back to the top - where it belongs. I now

just cannot wait to get started,” Di Maria said. United manager Van Gaal praised Di Maria as “a world-class midfielder” but added “most importantly he is a team player”. “There is no doubting his immense natural talent,” continued the Dutchman. “He is a tremendously fast and incisive left-footed player who puts fear into the most accomplished defence. His dribbling skills and his ability to take on and beat opponents are a joy to watch. He is an excellent addition to the team.” The winger however as sensationally claimed he did not want to leave Real Madrid but was left no choice by the La Liga club’s board. Instead, Di Maria claimed “lies were circulated” when both player and club were in dispute over a new contract and that Madrid wanted to “pin the idea of leaving” on him.
