Experts call for vigilance over Godane death
Security commentators are warning of the potential danger from the Al-Shabaab terror group after the killing of its top commander Ahmed Abdi Godane early last week. Godane was among 11 insurgents killed in US airstrikes in Somalia on Monday night. News of his death were welcomed by both US and President Uhuru Kenyatta. “We owe the United States and its soldiers our heartfelt thanks for bringing an end Godane’s career of death and destruction,” Kenyatta said. He said the killing of the Al-Shabaab commander provides a small measure of closure to the Westgate attack victims. P2

Experts: Shabaab may revenge Godane death
From Page 1 The Pentagon said his killing “is a significant blow to their network, to their organisation, and we believe their ability to continue to conduct terror attacks.” But analysts are warning against complacency in the war on terror, especially threats posed by AlShabaab. “Removing him will significantly weaken the Al Shabaab, at least in the short term. But the threat remains,” Cedric Barnes of the International Crisis Group said.
The Somalia-based militant group has named Ahmad Umar as successor to Ahmed Abdi Godane. The group said the move in an online statement in which they also vowed to take revenge for the death. “Avenging the death of our scholars and leaders is a binding obligation on our shoulders that we will never relinquish nor forget no matter how long it takes. By the permission of Allah, you will surely taste the bitter consequences of your actions,” the statement said.
Somalia’s authorities have put the country on high alert over possible retaliatory attacks by the group. Ahmad was Al-Shabaab’s third leader and was described as a lowranking commander. Will McCants, Director of Brookings Project on US Relations with the Islamic World and head of Mogadishu-based security think tank, Heritage Institute, concurred that there should be no laxity in the fight against extremists. McCants said the killing was a “ big deal”, and described the slain
commander as a “ruthless killer” who merged Al Shabaab with AlQaeda. Aynte said Godane killed his would-be successors in major internal rifts last year and urged for more vigour to wipe out the militants. Others close to him may also have been killed, according to the group’s statement. “We lost our great leader Ahmed Godane and two other commanders in hands of the enemy on Monday night’s US airstrike.” But the analysts maintain that the
insurgents are pushing a wider jihadist agenda and that they should not be ignored. With the fate of Mahad Diriye, who is thought to be Godane’s nominal deputy, and that of Mahad Mohamed Ali who heads the group’s feared security wing, unknown, the analysts called for vigilance. They also want the US and Amisom forces to track another militant identified as Ikrima who is believed to have been the key plotter of the Westgate attack.
Mother jailed for 18 months for assisting daughter abort A single mother in Pennsylvania has been sentenced to prison for helping to end her 16-year-old daughter’s pregnancy by giving her ‘abortion’ pills. The girl took the pills and ended up in hospital with extreme abdominal pain and bleeding, reports The Press Enterprise. Her mother, Jennifer Ann Whalen, 39, of Washingtonville, Pennsylvania, who works as a nursing home aide, was sentenced on Friday to 18 months in jail after pleading guilty to performing the abortion. Whalen bought the miscarriage-inducing pills from a European drug firm after her daughter became pregnant, but did not want to have the child. She was sentenced on Friday by Montour County Court Judge, Gary Norton, to 12 months to 18 months
in prison for violating a state law that requires abortions to be performed by physicians. She was also fined $1,000 (Sh88,800) and ordered to perform 40 hours of community service after her release. The felony offense called for up to seven years in prison and a $15,000 (Sh1.3 million) fine but the judge decided to be lenient. Whalen’s attorney, Michael Banks, says his client understands ‘her decision was poor.’ Whalen told authorities they couldn’t find a local clinic to perform an abortion, and the girl had no insurance to pay for a hospital stay. The closest abortion clinic to Whalen’s home is about 74 miles away at Harrisburg. Whalen’s attorney, Michael Banks, says his client understands that ‘her decision was poor.’

Leaders to be charged over Mandera violence Political leaders in Mandera County are among several suspects to be prosecuted over on-going clashes in the region. Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Lenku and Inspector General David Kimaiyo who led leaders and traders on a tour to assess the security situation said politicians will be prosecuted for fuelling the bloodshed. He said investigations had zeroed in on some
politicians believed to be fuelling the wave of violence that has left dozens killed and thousands more displaced. “I can confirm to you hear that we have evidence against politicians from this area, some of whom are here. We will prosecute them once police are through with statements,” Lenku said on Sunday at Rhamu. Kimaiyo said police will no longer entertain
warnings and calls for dialogue and politicians will take responsibility for their actions. He directed all elected leaders to record statements with police this morning at the county headquarters. “This is the third time we are coming here because of clashes and senseless killings. Those responsible will now face charges,” he said.
Violence erupted in Rhamu town in Mandera sub-county two weeks ago with more than 30 people killed in clashes between Degodia and Garre clans. Humanitarian agencies and NonGovernmental Organisations working concur that the problem has been fuelled by quest for political dominance between rival clans.

Fire destroys Naivas store in Utawala
Internet operators plan go slow over new FCC rules A number of the world’s favourite sites will literally slow down their internet speeds in a move they hope will inspire millions of computer users around the world. On Wednesday, some of the world’s biggest tech and online companies are planning a “Go Slow” day to protest a move by the US-based Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to take the free and fair use of the Internet away from the public. Mozilla, Reddit, KickStarter, FourSquare, Vimeo, and Meetup will all simulate what users on their websites will experience without the current Internet speeds. Fight for the Future, an Internet advocacy group, said some sites would display a “spinning wheel of death”, a loading wheel that will symbolize what surfing the web could be like if the rules proposed by the FCC go into effect. Even adult sites like PornHub, RedTube, and YouPorn plan on joining the protest, though a PornHub representative was quick to note that it won’t actually slow down the content.
Property valued at millions of shillings was destroyed when a fire burnt down a section of Naivas Supermarket in Utawala, Nairobi. Nacada directive on miraa chewing hours suspended by court Nacada has been temporarily stopped from imposing miraa consumption hours across the country. The anti-drug agency wanted to restrict miraa chewing to between 5pm and 10 pm. However, the High Court on Friday issued orders restraining it from effecting the move pending the hearing and determination of a suit
filed against the proposal. The case was filed by the Kenya Miraa Farmers and Traders Association, which accused Nacada of unlawfully purporting to regulate consumption of miraa. The association has accused Nacada of restricting consumption of miraa without any basis and participation of all stakeholders. According to
the petitioner, Nacada has no legal mandate to restrict time for miraa consumption without first consulting farmers, traders and consumers. They have further accused Nacada of continuing to sponsor and spearhead negative campaign through publications, media, social events and seminars about miraa. “The action by the respondents has
adversely affected marketing and income from miraa because their campaign caused countries like the UK to implement a legislation that banned miraa sale and consumption,’’ they argue. The petitioner contends that miraa should not have timelines for consumption since it is scientifically classified as a mild stimulant like
coffee and tea.Recently, the National Assembly passed an amendment to include miraa in the schedule of cash crops in Kenya. The amendment is awaiting the approval of the Senate and thereafter Presidential assent. Currently, there is no law that prohibits production, sale and consumption of miraa in Kenya.

Sack brew deaths county chiefs, Mututho tells Govt National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse Chairman John Mututho has called for the sacking of 23 county commissioners. Mututho (pictured) vaccused the officials of failing to tame the toxic brew menace in counties. Mututho says despite an order by Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku for the profiling of all bars in the counties, only 24 commissioners had complied. “President Uhuru Kenyatta had issued a stern warning that county commissioners who don’t comply in management and control of abuse of alcohol and drugs should go home, he should now crack the whip,” Mututho told journalists on Sunday. He said the commissioners are squarely to blame for the menace because they are “sleeping on the job.” “If you look at people who have died they have been
drinking branded alcohol, they were drinking from unlicensed bars under the supervision of the police,” he said. Mututho said Nacada management is too weak for the war against drugs and alcohol abuse due to lack of a functional board. He says the board is missing in six members and is limited in the fight against toxic brews. “If we had a board that is functional, we would work, but we can’t now because other members of the board are civil servants who are protecting each other, we cannot even pass a vote,” he said.
Five charged over State House car robbery Five suspects were today charged over the theft of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s escort car last week. The five, who included a Ugandan national, all denied the charges and were freed on a Sh2 million cash bail each. The Ugandan is said to be a key player in the robbery and was arrested at Mlolongo area in Machakos County. Investigations show after the car’s driver was attacked, it was taken to the Ugandan, who viewed it and approved the operation. The BMW 735 was stolen at Utawala, Nairobi, before it was recovered in Kampala six days later. The car arrived in Nairobi Friday morning under heavy
security after spending a night in Busia at the County Commissioner’s office. The black BMW 735 series had crossed into Kenya at around 5pm on Thursday after leaving Ugandan capital, Kampala. It was later paraded at the Flying Squad Headquarters in Nairobi, where the media were allowed to take pictures. Police said they will hand over the car to State House after the court approves the process. The car had a fake insurance sticker showing the number plate as UAA 592X and was recovered without number plates at the Wandegeya area near Makerere University on Tuesday.

Outrage over Egypt gay wedding video Egyptian authorities have ordered the arrest of nine men who appeared in a video purporting to show the country’s first gay marriage. The authorities have accused the men of inciting debauchery and undermining morals. Gay marriage is not legal in Egypt, a conservative Muslim society where the footage, which went viral on social media sites last month, has caused a stir online. Though homosexuality is not specifically banned in Egypt, discrimination is rife. Arrests of gay men occasionally make headlines. The accused are typically charged with debauchery, immorality or blasphemy, drawing criticism from rights groups. The footage, which was posted on YouTube, appears to show a group of men celebrating a gay wedding on a Nile river boat. The public prosecutor’s office said the party took place in April but the footage went viral in August, causing the police to take action to identify the men. The statement said the images were “humiliating, regrettable and would anger God.”
Chinese nationals reported to be among the foreigners in ISIL ranks After confirmation that British nationals have joined the ranks of Islamic fighters in Iraq and Syria, reports from Iraq indicate that Chinese too may be members of the extremist group. The Iraqi Army said they had captured an Islamic State fighter from China, reports from the Iraqi News said. “First Chinese ISIS fighter captured in Iraq says Ministry of Defense.” The headline of the news agency said of its September 3, posting. It was also marked as “URGENT” which is an equivalent of Breaking News. Two pictures accompanied the report with one showing the captured militant in fatigue pants and a bloodied shirt lying on the ground. Another showed him escorted by an Iraqi soldier, his face seemingly swollen. If true, he would be the first Chinese national to have been caught fighting with ISIS militants. “We are not able to verify whether or not the information is true,” Chinese foreign ministry
spokesman Qin Gang said while responding to a foreign reporter’s question. “I cannot confirm the information for you.” It’s not clear how many Chinese nationals may be fighting with ISIS. Wu Sike, until recently China’s special envoy to the Middle East, earlier said there could be about 100 of them, but Qin Gang said he had no specific number or estimates. Chinese citizens’ reaction was typically visceral. “Kill them!” said “Hellen” on the Iraqi News website. If such reports are true,
said Chinese commentator Victor Gao, “this will be an additional evidence that terrorism in China has a strong international connection. Terrorism does not care about national borders.” It remains unclear if the captured Chinese national is actually Uighur, a Muslim minority group in Xinjiang, but Gao seems to assume so. “In China terrorism is raising its ugly head and is spreading from Xinjiang to other parts of China. The underlying drivers for
terrorism are mainly the congruence of domestic and international forces at play among some extreme elements of the Uighur minority in Xinjiang,” he added. Xinjiang, a resourcerich and strategically located region in northwest China, for years has been beset by ethnic violence, which the government blames on “fenliefenzi” (“separatists”). Uighur exiles and rights activists, however, blame the unrest on Beijing’s allegedly repressive and discriminatory policies.

India also is coping with severe flooding which has killed at least 97 people in Kashmir, Vinod Koul, state relief and rehabilitation commissioner said. Hope as Ebola vaccine trial builds immunity in monkeys Vaccinated monkeys have developed “long-term” immunity to the Ebola virus, raising a prospect of successful human trials, say scientists. The experiments by the US National Institutes of Health showed immunity could last at least 10 months. Human trials of the vaccine started this week in the US and will extend to the UK and Africa. The World Health Organization says more than 2,000 people have now died of Ebola in West Africa. Several experimental treatments are now being considered to help contain the spread of Ebola.
This includes a vaccine being developed by the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline. It uses a genetically modified chimp virus containing components of two species of Ebola - Zaire, which is currently circulating in West Africa, and the common Sudan species. The viral vaccine does not replicate inside the body, but it is hoped the immune system will react to the Ebola component of the vaccine and develop immunity. Animal research, on which the deci-

This ban comes after hundreds of private images, most of them explicit, were posted, shared and viewed on the r/TheFappening page, and related groups over the weekend. Lawrence emerged among the top 10 most searched personalities in Kenya and she kept trending on social media. The social news platform acted upon accusations that it was enabling the humiliation of celebrities among others, Kate Upton, and Kirsten Dunst as well as Lawrence. It shows four crab-eating macaques all survived what would have been a fatal dose of Ebola virus five weeks later. However, only half survived an infection 10 months after immunisation. “The good part of this vaccine is that at five weeks or earlier you get full protection. The sobering news is the durability isn’t great, but if you give a boost, a second shot, you make it really durable,” director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Antony
Fauci told the BBC. “We knew this worked in the monkey months ago and based on this paper we started human trials,” he added. For now this is the best evidence available on how successful such a vaccine would be in people. The first patient, a 39-year-old woman, was given the vaccine last week as human trials got under way. There will also be separate trials of the vaccine against just the Zaire Ebola species. These will take place in the US, the University of Oxford in the UK as well as in Mali and Gambia.

Nestle shortlists two Kenyan groups for Sh48m award MONday, SEPTEmber 8, 2014
Sanergy, a social enterprise that makes affordable, hygienic sanitation accessible in slums and Honey Care Africa (HCA) are among finalists of the 2014 Nestlé Prize in Creating Shared Value (CSV). The prize is awarded every two years to help scale up or replicate business initiatives that address challenges in nutrition, water or rural development. Nestlé announced three
finalists, all working across East Africa, who were shortlisted from 759 entries from across the world. The announcement was made last week at the 2014 World Water Week, in Stockholm. Kenya-based Honey Care Africa was shortlisted for its project in South Sudan, where it is helping locals generate extra income through honey production. “We plan to use the prize money to help 35,000
farmers in impoverished South Sudan become commercial beekeepers by 2017. This will be achieved by allowing them generate additional income through honey production,” said Ryan Marincowitz, Country Manager for HCA in South Sudan. Sanergy promotes access to sanitation for about 8 million slum residents in Kenya. The dwellers are forced to rely on unsanitary options such as “flying
toilets” and pit latrines that release untreated human waste into the environment. Sanergy co-founder, David Auerbach, said the organisation will use the cash to reach more than 300,000 people and create 2,000 new jobs over five years. “We have opened 470 Fresh Life Toilets (their innovative product) in the slums in Nairobi with over 20,000 residents accessing affordable proper sanitation.

US fast food workers arrested after protests More than 100 fast food workers in US have been arrested after staging sit-ins. The protestors were demanding a living wage of $15 (Sh1,329) per hour, which they have been campaigning for since 2012. The current minimum wage is $7.25 (Sh642) an hour. The protest, which took place across 150 US cities, included workers from restaurants like McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s. The workers’ unions had organised to stage walkouts and protest shareholder meetings. Other than a rise in minimum wage, the protests are also meant to put pressure on the food chains to provide better scheduling options for workers looking to increase their hours. In 13 states, workers have
reported some progress due to the protests. Restaurants in the states have increased the wage. The campaign has also gathered support on social
media, where the hashtag #strikefastfood was used to highlight its importance. US President Barack Obama had said he supports raising mini-
mum wage at a speech on Monday. “There is no denying the simple truth: America deserves a raise,” he said.
Wealthy buy food in stores, poor in kiosks
In Kenya, wealthy households buy all types of food at a supermarket while poor and middle-income households buy only processed foods at supermarkets, lead analyst, Claire Romanik from US-based research group, The Urban Institute has revealed. Processed foods include rice, flour, bread, crisps, macaroni, pasta, biscuits, canned fruits, canned meat, sausages, ham, bacon, yoghurt, ice cream and chocolate, among others. “Poor and middle-income households do not buy fresh fruit and vegetables at large format supermarkets,” Romanik says. The research involved the study of more than 25 sources of information, including data from UN Food and Agriculture Organisation. Romanik says except for Nairobi’s wealthiest households, most consumers buy food from kiosks or ‘dukas’. After supermarkets, the second most important food retail outlet for Nairobi consumers are open markets, followed by butcheries and kiosks. “Kenya relies more on the formal sector for food markets because it has national supermarket chains,” says Romanik.
more money: MacDonald workers block a road in New York to agitate for higher minimum wage.
The survey which was done in Nairobi, shows the richest household spend more than 25 per cent of food in large supermarkets as the poorest spend only 2.5 per cent. Wealthy households spend as much as 50,000 a month on food compared with Sh5,000 for needy homes.

Barren Isiolo goes green as locals turn to maize farming Isiolo is the unlikeliest place to find maize farms due to its the semi aridness. However, residents are defying all this climatic conditions and actually growing the crop ordinariy associated with the rainsoaked areas of Western Kenya. A low cost and innovative way that traps water and nutrients is gaining popularity among farmers in the semi-arid area. The Merti area of Isiolo receives very little rainfall. But when it rains, a large amount of water reaches the ground only to be wasted on the poor soil, which lets it sink, leaving crops to die. The farmers’ numerous attempts to harvest the rain water have failed as the scorching sun dries it before they can even start preparing the land. This quickly changed when a visit by one of their own to West Africa inspired them to use semi lunes, a technique that involves digging half moon-shaped ponds into the soil to trap rain water. Semi lune is a French word meaning half moon and refers the shape of the contours dug into the soil to trap water. Ajara Abdi one of the farmers who now supplies fresh produce to hotels
and supermarkets in Isiolo town, was doubtful at first, but soon embraced the technique. Two years into the practice, and yields have increased as farmers who traditionally grew drought

NSE IPO investors to get 500 shares Investors who subscribed to the recent Nairobi Securities Exchange initial public offering (IPO) will each be guaranteed 500 shares only. An IPO is the first sale of stocks that a private company sells to the public. Additional shares will be allocated in multiples of 100 shares following an oversubscription of 663 per cent. Investors applied for 504 million new shares worth Sh4.8 billion against the target of Sh627 million, researchers from investment group, African Alliance told X News. Some 66 million shares were on offer at a price of Sh9.50 each.
Barclays Bank’s Sh350 service fee Barclays Bank of Kenya has introduced a $4 (Sh350) service fee for transactions on its ATMs using foreign debit and credit cards, analysts at investment research group, African Alliance informed X News. Barclays Bank officials said the access fee will be a benefit to customers using the cards since it will balance any Foreign Exchange (Forex) fluctuations given the unpredictability of the exchange rate system it applies when a foreign card withdraws cash in Kenya Shillings from its network.

Bitcoin exchanges are services that allow users to trade bitcoins for traditional currencies. The two traders admitted to the charges as part of a deal struck with US prosecutors in order to settle the allegations against them. Mr Shrem had been accused of allowing Mr Faiella to use BitInstant to purchase large quantities of Bitcoins to sell on to Silk Road users, who wanted to buy drugs anonymously. The authorities said Mr Shrem was aware that the Bitcoins were being used for such purchases, and therefore he was in violation of the Bank Secrecy Act.

Kenya Orchards, a Kenyan-based company involved in farming, was once again last week’s top gainer with 31.58 per cent stock price increase from 15.20 to Sh20 per share. The processed food distributor reported a profit after tax of Sh2,415,340 at the end of 2013 against Sh244,957 in 2012, which
represents an increase of 886 per cent in one year. The big jump in Kenya Orchards profitability is also explained by the gross profit figure that increased by 80 per cent from Sh1,639,820 in 2012 to Sh2,966,215 in 2013, since operating costs stayed at the same level.
NIC Bank NIC Bank, a Kenya-based financial services company providing retail, Corporate Banking, Brokerage and Investment Banking services, was last week’s loser with a 6.58 per cent price decrease from Sh76 to Sh71 per share. Henrietta weds Samjim
Henrietta’s childhood dream of a glamorous wedding came true on April 13, 2013 when she walked down the aisle to the arms of Samjim Mwanyasi. They had been dating for a year before tying the knot. “I realized he was the man
of my dreams from the way he listened to me and how he looked at me. He loved me, made me happy and was of course very pleasing to the eyes,” she said. They were wedded at the Gospel Assembly Church in Garden Estate. The reception was
at Oak Place Gardens. “I remember the night before, my planner called in distress saying the rains had soaked the reception grounds leaving no place to pitch the tents. Surprisingly, this didnt worry me. All I wanted was to marry this man.”
prewedding Take time planning that dream wedding The minute someone gets engaged, the first question everyone will be asking them will be the wedding date. How long a couple takes between the time they say yes and I do will be determined by them. There should not be a certain amount of time to plan a wedding. For all brides, they are going for perfection so it can take
how long they please. Major decisions like, do they want a big or small wedding, which will obviously determine the budget of their wedding, have to be taken into account. Money and budgeting are always the core issues during any wedding planning. Whether one is lucky enough to have their
parents or friends offer to help them pay for it or if they are on the financial burden themselves, there are considerations that many couples need to fully explore before diving into planning. The bride has to find the perfect dress. Many brides take their sweet time when it comes to picking a dress, some even have one custom made.

You have found the perfect girl you want to spend your life with. You feel deep down in your gut she is the one. You have spent the last three months looking and shopping for the right ring. Trying to measure her ring finger without her guessing or noticing. You have enlisted the help of her friends to plan the most romantic proposal. When you finally get around to getting down on one knee and proposing, instead of the tears and the happy yes all you hear is an embarrassed no. The world crumbles around you and seeing straight becomes difficult. Rejection hits home hard. A marriage proposal is always a gamble, it can go either way. It does not matter if you made it big and got her favourite everything, there is no guarantee it will go according to plan. There is a lot
one can do to reduce the chances of rejection but then again nothing is ever guaranteed where feelings are involved. One should already have an idea of what their partner is thinking before they decide to pop the question. Have both of you discussed your future together? Is she always pointing out engagement rings to you? Has she come out and asked you to marry her? All these are things you will need to take into consideration. But then again things could go south of the border without a moment’s notice. If she says no you must first consider the reason behind the no. It may be a “No, not right now”, “No, I never want to get married”, or “No, I do not want to marry you”. Knowing the type of no will help you figure out the next course of action.

Healthy side of fighting, quarrelling for couples
tellmeaboutit
The Kenyan media have in the recent past shocked audiences with reports of homicides. This is likely to lead many to think quarrelling and fighting is unhealthy for a family. But quarrels and fights are common. Psychologist say a couple that does not get into conflict may not understand one another. There are issues they may be hiding from one another. During courtship, parties do not show their ferocity; they show veracity. Occasional quarrelling makes couples learn and understand how much they can react to given situations. They will learn what can hurt the other party and avoid it next time. Quarrels are a window of venting out frustration. A hurt partner may pile up a grudge for a while.
Quarrelling lets them sneeze out what may be giving them a hell of time. A fighting couple can easily define a new way of doing things in the family; what they could not have agreed in a peaceful environment. For instance, disciplining children by a father may hurt the mother. If they pick a quarrel over the issue, they may reach a common ground of how to administer discipline on the children without hurting the other. Friction can be an eye opener. This happens when the parties cannot agree. They seek help from a professional or elders. If extramarital sex is the bone of contention, the extra person will explore the reasons behind and the possible solutions. The
professional will give the third side of the coin other than the front and back that the partners are stuck to. Squabbles also help in weeding out suspicion. When

the two engage one another, they spat out what they think the other party may be hiding from them. This can open a new chapter of discussing the matter.
She made me look like a lesbian When I joined college this year, I got a roommate with who we got along well. We became so close that people thought we were sisters. But weeks ago, we fell apart due to disturbing rumours. People started saying we were dating yet I have a boyfriend. It worried me a lot but I was surprised she didn’t think of the accusations as much of a deal. She just laughed them off. Recently, I
found out that she was the source of the gossip. No wonder she didn’t seem concerned when I talked to her about it. I thought she was a genuine friend but she has been going around telling people that I’m her girlfriend. I was so pissed off that I lashed out at her. We don’t talk anymore. She tried to apologise but I didn’t give her the chance. Do you think I over-reacted?
Reply: Anyone would be enraged by such betrayal. It is obvious you valued your friendship but she had other intentions. Chances are she is a lesbian and was probably laying grounds to suck you in. May be she has been hitting on you but you could not read the signs because you are not familiar with such. The fact that she went around telling people
shows she might have wanted more than friendship from you. She cannot just go around bluffing unless she is really into you. But if she was kidding then the joke is not funny at all. The only way to know why she did this is to listen to her part of the story. Only then will you know whether to walk away or not. It is human to be angry but don’t get lost in it. —CM
This is what drives your spouse mad Even when people feel they are deeply in love, there are things that remain irritating and annoying to partners. Ben Musau says he gets upset when she leaves him with unfilled dots. “I get mad whenever she says ‘I wanted to tell you something but don’t mind. It’s ok’.” He says it infuriates him to a point of starting a fight to squeeze the words out of her throat. He cannot stand the indefinite suspension. Phanice Kioga says: “His demand for me to apologise wherever I am wrong suffocates me. Not that I hate being remorseful, but because he does not say it too. When he is on the wrong and you prove it to him, he goes mute.” “Lack of attention in conversations makes me feel horrible. He has just arrived from the day’s errands and instead of grabbing me, he grabs the remote or ear phones for music or news. We have not met since morning, but on talking to him, I get ehe! Oho! Or a nod that at times goes side ways to mean yes,” says Jeyne Wambui, who has been in a relationship for a year.

The professor has supervised the University’s International Students Summer Programme as the Director There are times when the fittest ‘man’ for the job is a woman. That is exactly what defined Prof Olive Mugenda after a bruising rivalty with three male professors to the best ‘man’ for Kenyatta University’s Vice Chancellor’s seat in March 2006. Africans say a chick that grows to become a cock will be noticed immediately after hatching. Mugenda’s star broke bright in 1979 when she attained a First Class honours in her Bachelors of Education

She climbed up the ladder to the head of department of Family and Consumer Science and later Dean of the Institute of Applied Human Sciences. The professor has also supervised the university’s International Students Summer Programme as the

their older brother. Bringing T.I in the picture was a smart strategy that meant to attract international viewership and sales. This entertaining song is averagely good but this does not guarantee much survival on play charts given the current upsurge of lyrical competition. Compared to some of their past great hits, the Personally singers could have done better especially with T.I in the mix.
Ajuma Nasenyana is the most prominent fashion model in the country. The model, who hails from Lodwar in Turkana, competed in the Miss Tourism Kenya in 2003, where she was crowned Miss Nairobi. Through the competition, she captured the attention of international modelling agency, Surazuri, which led to her rise in the international modelling scene. She has modelled for popular
magazines such as; Elle, Dazed and Confused and designers such as Issey Miyake, Baby Phat and famous lingerie company, Victoria’s Secret. She has also had the pleasure of modelling alongside Naomi Campbell and Alek Wek. But despite her fashion model status, she admits not being fashion conscious as people assume saying that she is a tomboy. She keeps her hair short even on the catwalk, she does not shape or shave her eyebrows or her legs.
Westlife’s ‘Fool Again’ hit song Loving someone who does not reciprocate the love can be a cause of much anguish and regret. The voice in the Westlife’s song Fool Again expresses regret for not having noticed earlier that the girl he loved was to leave him for another man. He can read it from her face that their relationship is no more. He cannot convince
her to stay. But he asks to know the reasons of her departure and who is to replace him. He regrets remaining the fool who invested his feelings in an affair that was not to last, without reading the signs of her departure. He wonders why the girl could not call him whenever she felt lonely because he could make time to keep her.
He cannot pester her not to go. Because if she truly had feelings for him, she could have given him enough time to show how much he cared. She just backed out. It pains to lose her, but he can do little to reverse the episodes. Tears tear down his heart while wishing he could reverse the times and do it the right way.

Let CUE accredit academic programmes, not professional bodies The fact that graduates continue suffering from the pangs of joblessness as other students remain uncertain of their future as their papers fail to be recognised by professional bodies is unacceptable (Commission of University Education (CUE)
demands to be mandated to accredit university degrees September 5, 2014). The commission’s concerns are genuine and the Government and all stakeholders must listen. It leaves students confused whether to take up degrees from
universities whose curricula are approved by CUE, but not recognised by professional bodies. The bodies include Engineering Board of Kenya (EBK), Law Society of Kenya, among others. It will be disheartening for
students to spend more than four years in college only to be told they cannot be employed because they did a ‘bogus’ degree from a CUE approved institution. For instance, Kenyatta University and EBK have been battling in court over engineering courses
the university is offering. The Government must rescue the students whose careers are in jeopardy as the learning institutions and the professional bodies fight to flex their muscles.

record by a second at 1:05:39. The Kenyan’s only race this year was the 10km course in Ottawa, which she won in 31:22. After three kilometres, only Ethiopia’s London 2012 Olympic Games marathon champion Tiki Gelana, was able to follow the Kenyan, but not for long. At five kilometres, Keitany broke away from Gelana for high-speed race towards South Shields. Keitany appeared to have tied Radcliffe’s time before the official time was amended downwards. It was the second fastest time ever for the half marathon, although the point-to-point course from Newcastle to South Shields is not eligible for official records. Earlier this year, Kenya’s Florence Kiplagat set the world record of 1:05:12 in Barcelona. “I am happy about my time and the course record,” said Keitany. “Initially, it was not my plan to attack the record, but during the race it was going better and better, so I pushed the pace and gave it a try.” “I will go back home, have a break for one week before deciding what comes next,” she said.

Mwamba won Christie Sevens at the close of the National Sevens Circuit on Sunday at RFUEA Grounds, Nairobi. Meanwhile, Kenya Commercial Bank retained the overall title with 92 points after five legs. Quins beat Kabras Sugar 17-0 in a quarter final tie, as Strathmore beat Homeboyz 7-0. Homeboyz’s loss automatically handed KCB the overall title even as the bankers lost the bowl finals to Nondescript RFC 12-0. “Managing to defend the title is the most important thing for us. We have a pool of young players averaging 25 and this is a team
we will build for posterity,” said KCB head coach Curtis Olago. “I am happy working with Dennis Mwanja and Mike Shamiah because all our pros and cons were visible.” It was a highly contested final match as Mwamba came from behind to beat Impala 24-14. Impala led 7-5 at halftime from a Sam Onsomu’s converted try before Denis Ombachi pulled one back for Mwamba. The turning point for the match was a yellow card to Nato Simiyu few minutes into the second half that destabilised the Gazelles.

Kioko, Maina rule Mwea Half marathon
Number ONe: maurice munene leaves no doubt who is the winner of the 10km race at the mwea Half marathon over the weekend.
Eunice Kioko and James Maina are the new winners of the Mwea Classic Half Marathon race at Mwea Boys Secondary School on Saturday. Kioko clocked 1:14.08 to lift the women’s title in wet, chilly, and foggy conditions. Maina, the Lewa Half Marathon champion who was denied a three-month US visa to participate in his first ever-international race, won the men’s title after breezing to the tape in 1:02.35. “I had great dreams to participate in road races abroad and the dreams were cut short when I missed the visa. But I can now say it was a blessing in disguise.” “Today I am happy to have beaten other world beaters and my Ngong Hills training partners like Nicholas Kamakya and Francis Maundu. I am now focusing on the Ndakaini Half Marathon next Saturday,” said 21 year old Maina. Kioko, 26, who steps up her training in Machakos was glad to have nipped her
second victory this year after coming out of a protracted injury. The mother of one said: “Today’s race was tough because of the heavy weather. It was muddy all over but I am glad to have added another feather in my cup after clinching the Safaricom Mombasa 10km run a fortnight ago.” Decorated Kioko who last year won Lausane (Switzerland) 20km road race and the Prisons cross country championships added: “I am now focusing on the Italy Half Marathon in October.” Four-time Paris 20km road race champion Miriam Kangara easily won the Mwea Classic 10km category in 33:40. Wangari, who has won the Lille Half Marathon twice and Paris Versailles 15km four times, said the win inspired her to look forward for the forthcoming Jianzhen International Half Marathon. “I have been stepping up training in Nyahururu for a while and I am glad it has paid off despite the foul weather,” said Wangari.
Serena beats Woznicki at US Open for her 18th Grand Slam Serena Williams beat Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets to win her sixth US Open and 18th Grand Slam title. The American, ranked top in the world, won 6-3 6-3 at Flushing Meadows in New York. After a poor start from both players, Williams steadied herself to take the first set and found something approaching her best form to dominate the second. The victory moves her to joint-fourth in the all-time list of major winners, alongside Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. Serena, 32, has now won three successive titles at the US
Open, where she won her first Grand Slam 15 years ago. “It was a really wonderful feeling,” said Williams, who was joined by Navratilova and Evert for the trophy presentation, when she also collected Sh340million in prize money. “I couldn’t have finished things in a better way. It is a pleasure for me to win here, I am really emotional. I couldn’t ask to do it at a better place.” Wozniacki, a close friend of Williams, said: “Congratulations to Serena. She really deserved it today and played better than me. “She is an inspiration to me on
and off the court and an unbelievable friend - and you definitely owe drinks later!” Serena arrived in New York having failed to make it past the fourth round of a Grand Slam in 2014, but the American looked a class apart throughout the two weeks at Flushing Meadows. Her dominance was such that she won the title without dropping a set, or more than three games in a single set.
Leopards stay on course to defend GOTV title after victory over Ligi Ndogo Musa Mudde scored a brace in the second half to send AFC Leopards to the quarter finals of the GOTV Cup after they beat Ligi Ndogo 2-0 yesterday at City Stadium. They will
now face Tusker in the next round. The Ugandan midfielder found the target in the 55th minute from a cross by Edwin Wafula and added another in the 70th minute, this time making
the most of a Duncan Otewa delivery. Ligi Ndogo coach Oliver Page was disappointed that his side did not get anything from the match after a good show. “We deserved something
from this match. We played really well but lost concentration and allowed them to score.” His Leopards’ counter-part Pieter De Jongh said they had wasted numerous chances especial-
ly in the first half which sent his players into a state of panic as they looked for the equaliser. “We should have scored early but when we did not we panicked but I am glad we were able to
keep our nerves and qualify.” Elsewhere Sofapaka also booked their place in the last eight after eliminating a stubborn Muhoroni Youth side 2-1 at the latter’s yesterday.

Kenya weaknesses laid bare again in Olympics qualifiers Kenya men’s hockey team hopes of reaching Rio 2016 Olympics were thrown into the wind after losing 2-1 to Egypt in a World League One tie at the City Park Stadium, Nairobi, on Sunday. It was a repeat of last year’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers last November
when Kenya lost to Egypt. Victory in the pre-Olympic event would have granted them passage to the second round of World League (Africa Olympic qualifier) to be hosted by South Africa in February. The hosts’ inability to convert chances was evident in the match with
the team largely relying on midfielders for goals. Kenya was missing up to four forwards and although Coach Meshack Senge played down their absence before the start of the tie, their weakness was exposed by inability to score. “The difference was that Egypt took their chances
while we failed on ours… we could have loved to aske it to the second round,” said Senge. The team missed up to four forwards. The women’s team booked a ticket to the second round of the World League with a resounding 22-0 win over Tanzania in a one-sided clash.
This was Tanzania’s biggest loss in the tournament after they conceded 39 goals in two matches. They lost 17-0 to Ghana last Friday. Tanzania are yet to score a goal at the continental stage ever since they made a Africa Cup of Nations/ World Championship qualifiers debut in Nairobi.
Germany bound Pauline Naise scored five goals with Tracy Wanjala slotting four as Margaret Rotich, Betsy Ommala and Jackline Jow, Anita Agunda bagged a brace each. Ghana, who lost a second match to Kenya on Saturday, hit Tanzania (men) 13-0.

Germany edge gritty Scotland Scotland’s opening Euro 2016 qualifier ended in defeat by world champions Germany thanks to two goals from Thomas Muller. He headed the hosts in front in a first half completely dominated by the Germans. The Scots rode their luck in the first half but lifted their game after the break and levelled through Ikechi Anya. Poor defending, however, allowed Muller to fire in from close range to seal a narrow win, with Charlie Mulgrew sent off in stoppage time for the visitors. The result is no disgrace and nor was the Scots’ performance after half-time, when they seemed to find a belief that they could hurt their illustrious opponents. And so they did when Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher came off the bench and released winger Anya with a wonderful pass. The Watford player, racing from the halfway line, still had plenty to do but as he approached Manuel Neuer’s goal he showed terrific composure to slide the ball into the net. That cancelled out Muller’s early opener, which arrived despite two earlier warnings. The German forward had twice got his head to dangerous crosses the first a bad miss, the second cleared to safety - before the third landed in David Marshall’s net. Anya - not for the first time - afforded midfielder Sebastian Rudy far too much time and space on the German right and his measured cross found Muller climbing between Alan Hutton and Russell Martin to loop a header over the keeper. If the Scots defended that one poorly, the loss of the second was calamitous.

Hamilton beats rival Birech prevails in Brussels to win Diamond Race Rosberg at Monza Lewis Hamilton overcame a poor start to beat Formula 1 title rival Nico Rosberg to victory in the Italian Grand Prix and narrow his deficit in the championship battle. Hamilton put a recent run of bad fortune behind him to qualify on pole by two tenths of a second, but made a poor start and fell to fourth as Sunday’s race got under way on a sunny afternoon at Monza. This removed any chance of a repeat of the collision between Hamilton and Rosberg that handed Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo victory in the previous race in Belgium. Hamilton says he intends to exploit what he believes is team-mate Rosberg’s vulnerability to pressure in
the title run-in. Hamilton, 29, said: “I knew that was the best time to put pressure on him. “I did it a couple of races ago and he doesn’t seem to like it so I’ll try it a bit more.” Hamilton’s victory came at the end of a turbulent two weeks for the Mercedes team following the drivers’ collision in the preceding Belgian Grand Prix, for which Rosberg was reprimanded by the team and forced to apologise. It was Hamilton’s sixth win of the year to Rosberg’s four, but the Englishman’s higher count of reliability problems at crucial times means he is still 22 points behind Rosberg in the championship with six races and a maximum of 175 points remaining.
Done it : Jairus Birech celebrates after a previous race.
In his past five wins on the IAAF Diamond League circuit, Jairus Birech has looked almost unbeatable. In Brussels, he was pushed all the way by European record-holder Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad, but the Kenyan pulled out his first sub-eight-minute performance to secure the Diamond Race title. Led through the first 1000m in 2:38.41, Mekhissi-Benabbad was keeping close to the pacemaker before Birech took up the running and went through 2000m in 5:21.31, with the tempo slipping just outside eight-minute pace. Determined to become the 11th member of the sub-eight-minute club, Birech pushed the pace in the closing kilometre, opening up a gap on Mekhissi-Benabbad before the final lap. The 21-year-old Kenyan pulled further away from his French rival and stopped the clock at 7:58.41, taking him to 10th on the world all-time list. Mekhissi-Benabbad had to be content with a season’s best and European lead of 8:03.23. In third, US’s Evan Jager set a North American record of 8:04.71. “I felt strong before the race. My aim was to run under eight minutes and I did it. I have reached all my goals this year,” said Birech.
