MPs vet nominated envoys WEDNESday, September 10, 2014

The MPs are expected to either approve or reject those vetted. Kenyans will, however, be keen on a handful of the proposed appointees whose nomination has triggered debate over regional inclusion, age and claims of favouritism. Discussions on the suitability of Maj General Philip Kameru, who was appointed the next Director General of the National Intelligence

Service (NIS) is likely to draw attention. Kameru is the Chief of Military Intelligence and MPs have voiced concern that his tenure has left the country reeling under attacks from terrorists. Others faulted the nomination on the basis that it did not meet the requirements of regional inclusivity given that most senior officials of the spy agency are from one region. The other 25 nominees were all picked to head foreign missions abroad.

But the age factor and political connections put former Cabinet Ministers Chirau Mwakwere and Prof Sam Ongeri in a tight spot. The two were nominated as diplomats to Dar es Salaam and UN Habitat respectively. Kisumu Central MP Ken Obura told the two to decline the appointments given that they have served the public “long enough.” “Considering you will be turning 80 in four years, I urge you to give younger people a chance,” he said.

Ongeri is 76 while Mwakwere is 69. The MPs will also closely scrutinise recommendations on former Finance Minister Njeru Githae who was appointed the new ambassador to Washington DC. MPs have questioned his experience to head the powerful mission. Migori Women Representative Denittah Ghati questioned Githae’s experience during the vetting. The three, alongside Kiema Kilonzo, who was nominated to serve as Kenya’s envoy to Ankara,

Turkey, have been accused of using political connections to influence the appointments. Former nominated MP Sheikh Mohamed Dor, who was nominated as the new ambassador to Oman, faced queries over his alleged links to the Mombasa Republican Congress (MRC) funding. There were disagreements as MPs claimed he was being shielded from scrutiny during the vetting.

Jobless graduate who hunted for work at train station hired

A graduate who held up a sign advertising his skills to commuters at a train station has landed a prominent position after his direct approach to job hunting paid off. Twenty-two year-old Alfred Ajani of South London feared he was getting nowhere after unsuccessfully applying for more than 300 jobs after his graduation in May. A new report has revealed that despite the improving of the UK economy, university graduates will still struggle to find jobs in

coming months. Research group, IPPR said even a ‘fullblown’ economic recovery will not solve UK’s youth unemployment problem. In November 2011, there were 1.02 million unemployed youth. Despite steady falls in the jobless totals among younger people, there are still 868,000 out-of-work 16 to 24-year-olds as of this month. Alfred, well aware of the ongoing job market crisis, got up early to intercept

passing city workers at the busy London station last month, holding a sign saying: ‘Marketing Graduate - Please ask for a CV’. His approach was well received by passing executives and one director who saw him has signed him up. Meanwhile, Alfred started his job in a marketing role at recruitment agency, the Asoria Group, this week and now works metres from the spot where he once stood looking for a job.

“The director walked past me when he saw me that morning, but later got in contact through LinkedIn,” he said. “The company said they were looking for someone with out-of-the-box ideas and so they were keen to get me in.” To commemorate the fame his stunt brought him, Alfred’s new colleagues made special T-shirts with his photo printed on them to welcome him on his first day.

Syrian Islamist insurgents commander blown up in blast Hassan Abboud, the leader of the Syrian Islamist insurgents, Ahrar al-Sham, has been killed with other top commanders in a bomb blast during a meeting. Activists say during the attack, a suicide bomber detonated a vest in the north-western town of Ram Hamdan, killing the insurgents. Ahrar al-Sham is part of the Islamic Front, a coalition of seven Islamist rebel groups. In February, Ahrar al-Sham blamed rival Islamic State group for an attack which killed several of its members.

Activist groups say at least 40 people may have died in the attack, although the exact death toll is not clear. Ahrar al-Sham is one of the biggest rebel groups fighting the government of President Bashar al-Assad. Although the group is hardline Islamist in orientation, it has opposed and clashed with the ultra-radical Islamic State (IS) group, which is believed to have orchestrated the attack. IS was blamed when another Ahrar al-Sham

leader, Abu Khaled al-Suri, was killed in a suicide bomb attack on his headquarters in Aleppo in February. Hassan Abboud’s death comes at a moment when Americans are seeking to unify the Syrian opposition into a coordinated fighting force against IS, although Ahrar al-Sham would have made an unlikely partner in such an American-led campaign, Abboud said unlike IS, Ahrar al-Sham would never pledge loyalty to outsiders and would only fight in Syria. It would continue fighting

until Assad’s government is ousted, he said. He said the Islamic Front did not use suicide bombers and did not follow the “takfiri” doctrine, which holds that society has reverted to a state of unbelief, legitimising attacks on fellow Muslims. At one time, Ahrar al-Sham was considered the most powerful rebel force that was battling the government. It operated all over the country and often co-operated with more moderate forces.

Senators want bar raised for MCA aspirants

Dogs prefer being petted not spoken to, study says

Senators want to review the basic qualifications for those wishing to become ward reps. Kipchumba Murkomen, (Marakwet), Stephen Sang (Nandi) and Bony Khalwale (Kakamega) told reporters in Kisumu that they are already pushing for amendments to raise the bar for those aspiring to the position of MCA because many are incompetent.

Dogs prefer to be petted than to receive verbal praise, a new study has revealed. For one part of the study, which was published in the journal ‘Behavioural Processes’, researchers observed 42 dogs as they interacted one at a time with two people in a room. One person petted the dogs, while the other praised the dogs verbally. The dogs showed more interest in people who were petting them. “I was surprised that when only one alternative was available, dogs still did not engage with the human for vocal praise,” said study co-author Dr. Erica Feuerbacher, an assistant professor of anthrozoology at Carroll College in Helena, Montana. Feuerbacher noted that previous studies showed that a dog’s heart rate and blood pressure were lowered by human petting, similar to the way in which human contact helps people experience a sense of security and companionship.

IEBC: Change of poll date may need referendum The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Isaack Hassan on Tuesday said it would require a referendum to change the election date from the second Tuesday of August. Ugenya MP David Ochieng’ has sponsored a Bill, which proposes to have the election date moved to December. Hassan said IEBC legal experts are of the opinion that it will take a referendum to change the election date as it would result in an extended term of office for the President. He said the commission had, therefore, recommended to the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly that the matter be taken before a Constitutional Court before it is tabled on the floor of Parliament for adoption. “Because there is also that opinion that a referendum is not necessary if both the National Assembly and Senate, by

Kenya donates Sh87m to Sierra Leon’s anti-Ebola drive Kenya will donate Sh87 million to Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia to help in the fight against Ebola, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said. Making the pledge on Tuesday at State House,

Nairobi, President Kenyatta said the donation is in line with Kenya’s foreign policy on African solidarity. “Standing in solidarity with our African brothers and sisters during times of adversity is part of our

foreign policy,” President Kenyatta said. He assured that border surveillance will continue to ensure Kenyans are protected from Ebola. The Head of State has previously stated that Kenya

will not abandon the West African states that have been affected by Ebola. The pledge came as the World Health Organization warned that Liberia is set to see a huge rise in infections from the virus ravaging West

Africa, with thousands of new cases imminent. The UN agency said the country, worst-hit in the outbreak with almost 1,100 deaths, faced “many thousands” of new infections in the next three weeks.

A suspected thug was last night shot and seriously wounded by police in a botched mugging attempt in Ngara. The suspect was in the company of three others and they had been attacking and robbing pedestrians when police were alerted. Police say his accomplices managed to escape on foot in the 9 pm incident.

Kidero says he’s ready to deliver to city residents

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero says he is free to deliver on his election pledges after “overcoming battles that have weighed me down” in the initial stages of his administration. Kidero assumed office on the promise of making Nairobi a world class city without traffic snarl-ups and waste. He also pledged to reduce crime, repair roads and improve healthcare for residents. But the pledges have largely remained mere lip service 18 months into his tenure. But while speaking on a live TV interview last night, Kidero blamed “unfortunate events” that have allegedly stopped him from fulfilling his pledges. Kidero specifically referred to a petition that challenged his election, saying court battles took much of his time. “But after overcoming the battles, I am ready to deliver on the promises I

Obama to declare terrorist group ISIS counter strategy President Obama is today expected to announce his strategy to counter terror group ISIS even as the national security hawks called for the authorisation of air strikes on leaders of the militants. “We need to be targeting the top ISIS military and strategic leadership,” said Danielle Pletka at the American Enterprise Institute. “Our policy up ‘til now hasn’t been good enough. It’s a day late and a dollar short, and that’s why ISIS is a threat to the United States.” US airstrikes have so far focused on ISIS field positions in Iraq following three limited goals outlined by the President: protect Americans, help Iraqi forces and prevent a humanitarian disaster. But top leaders have not been singled out, Pentagon spokesman Col Steven Warren said. “We have not conducted any targeted airstrikes on specific ISIL leaders,” he said. ISIL is the Ameriocan acronym for ISIS, which calls itself the “Islamic State”. When asked why US is not trying

to kill the group’s top leaders, White House spokesman Josh Earnest did not rule out such a strategy in future. “I would anticipate that as our intelligence improves, and crystallises, that our military capabilities will expand accordingly,” Earnest said Tuesday. Moreover, he said, thanks to the formation of a new Iraqi government, the President believes “we are ready to enter the next, more offensive phase, in this strategy.” Former national security adviser, retired Gen. James L. Jones, said he would be surprised if the President

did not instruct the military to target the head of ISIS at some point. “When the President gives the word, it will be a formidable capability that we launch against this organization, and perhaps against him.” Obama due to issue a prime time address to argue that targeted military might and an international coalition can defeat IS, before it poses a threat to the US homeland. Sources say he is prepared to authorise air strikes in Syria. Analysts said the first challenge would be to locate elusive ISIS leaders.

Study links high protein intake to low blood pressure People who consume a high amount of protein tend to have a lower risk of high blood pressure, a new Boston University study published in the American Journal of Hypertension reveals. The researchers tracked 1,361 people’s blood pressure for an average of 11.3 years. Those who consume the highest amounts of protein, about 102 grams per day logged the lowest blood pressure. The high-protein group also had a 40 per cent lower risk of developing hypertension over the course of the study, compared with people who consumed the least protein, about 58 grams per day. “It may be that people who eat more protein have healthier diets in general,” author Justin Buendia said. “With higher protein consumption, you may feel full sooner, leading to beneficial metabolic outcomes, pressure.”

Ebola is a threat to our national existence, says Liberian minister

Liberia’s national existence is now under serious threat as the deadly Ebola virus continues to “spread like wildfire”, defence minister Brownie Samukai has said. Samukai told the UN Security Council that the country is overwhelmed by the epidemic and that the international support to the crisis is insufficient. “The deadly Ebola virus has caused a disruption of the normal functioning of our state. It is a serious threat to our national existence. The virus spreads like wildfire,” he said. He said his country lacked “infrastruc-

ture, logistical capacity, professional expertise and financial resources to effectively address this disease”. Samukai said the international response to the crisis was “less than robust”. His remarks came barely days after the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that thousands more Ebola cases could occur in Liberia, which has been worst hit by the West Africa outbreak. Some 2,288 people have died from the virus in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

The WHO says half of these deaths occurred in the three weeks running up to 6 September. In Nigeria, eight people have died out of a total 21 cases, while one case has been confirmed in Senegal, with no deaths. Separately, on Tuesday, the UN’s envoy in Liberia said at least 160 Liberian health workers had contracted the disease and half of them had died. Karin Landgren described the outbreak as a “latter-day plague” that was growing exponentially. She added that health workers were

operating without proper protective equipment, training or pay, in comments to the UN Security Council. “Liberians are facing their gravest threat since their war,” Ms Landgren said. “I don’t think anybody can say right now that the international response to the Ebola outbreak is sufficient,” US ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power said after the Security Council briefing. Ebola spreads between humans by direct contact with infected blood, bodily fluids or organs, or indirectly

through contact with contaminated environments. Unlike other West African nations affected by the outbreak, efforts to contain the virus in Liberia were not working well, the WHO has said. The reason for this remains unclear. However, experts say it could be linked to burial practices, which can include touching the body and eating a meal near it. The first case of the present outbreak was reported in March in Guinea but Liberia has borne the brunt of the current epidemic.

Opportunities in housing sector The Sarit Centre hosted this year’s Property and Home Living Expo from September 4–7. The event brought together leading developers and real estate giants under one roof. Realtors like Pam Golding, Bluebell and AMS Properties were keen on showcasing their products. Standard Chartered bank offered guidance on some of their property loan products. Held at the Sarit Centre Exhibition hall in Nairobi, this year’s theme was ‘Building networks to foster County real estate growth and home development’. Exhibition organiser Abdi Juma said the exhibition was a timely move to showcase “the vibrant real estate opportunities in the 47 counties by leading developers.” He said such events are aimed at “tapping into the emergent spending power of the middle economic class keen on avoiding steep prices of similar property in the capital.” As the incomes of Kenya’s middle-class continues to rise and the cost of borrowing from banks falls, more people can afford home loans. The property market has been under-exploited over the years since only about 20,000 out of about 16 million working Kenyans have taken home loans. The event was aimed at attracting county governments and county-based property developers, showcasing investment opportunities in Kenya’s property sector. “Many developers are confident that the government will develop policies that will unlock the full potential of the real estate sector in the counties,” said Juma. Investors have asked the Government to develop a policy that will lead to the

The English Point Marina at Fort Jesus and Acacia Holiday Homes in Tsavo are two of the main unique properties in East Africa which were showcased at the event. the expo was a perfect opportunity to showcase developments such as “high net niche audiences.” Other county-based properties that graced the exhibition were Migaa’s Mitini Scapes, located in Kiambu, Kikwetu development by Home Afrika based in Athi River, Longonot City, the Sh5 billion Mt Kenya Homes Holiday Homes and Nanyuki Mall in Nanyuki, among others. The exhibition coincides with the Ministry of Planning and Devolution report of a 4.8 per cent rise in developments in 2012 up from 4.3 per cent in 2011.

Catalyst Principal Partners to invest in drugs retailer, Mimosa Catalyst Principal Partners, a private equity firm with operations in East Africa, will invest in retail pharmacy chain, Mimosa Pharmacy Limited. The investment will build on Mimosa’s reputation for quality health and beauty products as the firm plans to expand footprints across major commercial centres in Kenya and Eastern Africa. The partnership comes as the pharmaceutical sector grapples with imported fake drugs. Ministry of Health officials estimate that 80 per cent of all malaria drugs in the market are counterfeits and harmful to users. Counterfeit drugs account for $130 million (Sh11.5 billion) sales every year; meaning many consumers get a raw deal as their health pays the price. Alongside Chris Getonga, the

founder of Mimosa, Catalyst has partnered with Africa Chemist and Beauty Care (ACBC), which has experience in pharmacy retail business in global and emerging markets. Catalyst Principal Partners’ Managing Director Biniam Yohanne said: “The sector has evolved rapidly over

the last decade, with increased consumption of pharmaceutical and personal care products in retail channels driven by increased access, exposure and appreciation of the health benefits of quality products and brands.” “Our investment will fill the gap between the consumer

demand and market supply,” he said. ACBC’s Chairman and Co-Founder Josh Ruxin said: “We look forward to delivering a high quality customer experience to service increasingly discerning consumers in Kenya and across the region.”

Bicycle transporters make up to Sh30,000 a month People who transport goods on bicycles earn between Sh150 and Sh1,000 a day, a study on small local businesses has revealed. Munguti Katui Katua, a researcher on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has found that bicycle vendors are mostly found in rural areas though many work around urban and residential areas. Mostly, they transport crates of bread, boxes of milk and water, making as much as Sh30,000 a month working for less than 6 hours a day. “A bicycle vendor buys water for Sh3 per jerry can and sells it for between Sh6 and Sh10 depending on the distance he has

to cover” says Katua with regard to rural vendors. Those in urban areas can make 10 times as much since they sell a jerry-can of water for between Sh20 and Sh60, depending on the area. Places like Kitengela that are prone to water shortages attract fees of up to Sh60 per jerry-can. Although a hand-cart vendor can carry many more jerry cans of water than a bicycle, their transport is slower and heavier. Bicycle vendors can therefore transport a number of goods to supplement their income from their water business. They buy them on behalf of kiosk and shop owners and collect a daily commission.

Rubber tiles are best for safe, durable floors While aesthetics, maintenance and longevity are at the heart of most decisions on the kind of floor to have for a house, safety is paramount. That is why rubber tiles are a good bet. First and foremost, they are safe because they lessen the danger of injuries from slipping and falling. The spongy and plastic nature of rubber tiles makes them not only absorbent to the noise of footsteps and other sounds, but also give a good grip of shoe or feet soles by increased friction reducing the risk of slipping. It is this property that makes it appropriate for use in kitchens bathrooms as well as other places where water and other liquids are bound to spill. Gaming and work out rooms need to be softer and friendly to avoid injuries in case you fall down.

This is one of the perfect floor materials that can minimise injuries since you are likely to stretch and turn to different angles and positions. Rubber also retains its appearance for longer. It resists scratches from sharp objects which break or scratch other forms of floors and thus increasing the costs of maintaining them. Besides, its elasticity makes it resist breakages. It can adjust to cold and warm temperature, which at times make other floors crevice into gapes. Heavy object falling on this material are not likely to cause its cracking too because it is soft, but hardy. You are bound to spend a lot of time standing in the kitchen. The harsh hard floor may make you uncomfortable. Rubber floor is friendlier to long periods of standing.

paintjob Avoid drips to make your paint job tidy Trying your hand at painting whenever you are free without the help of a professional is not a bad idea. But avoiding those tear drops makes your work speaks professionally to your visitors. Using a painting tape is the safest way to prevent the drips that run from one colour to the next. It allows you smooth transition from say yellow to green on walls. The paint rolls that may escape your brush will end up on the painting tape, which you will remove after the exercise. It will leave clear distinctions between the two areas. Chopping the runny paint drops with a putty knife, razor blade

or paint scrapper is another option. It is done carefully on the wall or on furniture to avoid denting the surface and giving it more blemishes. Lumps and molehills of original coat can be removed too to let the space remain smooth. Sanding paper can scrape off these marks even though they leave scratches which can be repainted over using a feathery brush with the original spot paint. For the spot to neatly marry, use the original shade. But prior to this, it must be wiped out with a damp cloth to remove paint dust particles that may make the surface rough.

Kemunto dumped teaching for fashion, and it paid Would you abandon the career you trained in for fashion design? Lydia Kemunto Cutler (picture below) did. She was a high school teacher for 16 years but followed her passion and became an award-winning designer. She has showcased her designs in Kenya, Australia, England and Scotland but she continues to broaden her

brand visibility. Lydia actively promotes charity work and is set to showcase at the Brooklyn Fashion week this month. Kemunto Fashions Tartan collection featured one of her outstanding designs bearing Scottish Tartan and Lace with simplicity and elegance blending in quite well. The fashion label evokes romance of ancient Scottish ancestry with modern day living for the fashion conscious woman. Our fashion team spoke to Lydia who currently resides in Scotland and is now a mother of three boys: How long have you been in the fashion industry? I worked as a teacher but later I decided to pursue full time fashion designing seven years ago. Was it a challenge to leave teaching? My passion in dressmaking has always been with me from a very

early age. I started sketching designs when I was eight years old. What are some of the greatest runways you have done so far? All runways are great for me, I enjoy having my dresses showcased anywhere but my best showcasing was at the Brooklyn Fashion Week New York, the Africa Fashion Week London, the London Fashion Week, Perth Fashion Festival Australia, and I had the opportunity to showcase at the United Nations HQ in New York. I was also invited to showcase at the House of Lords Parliament London and also regret missing showcasing at the Commonwealth Games 2014. I have done several charity fashion shows in Kenya. Where do you retail your designs? I am in based in Scotland but I have customer base all over the world.

Have you collaborated with other designers in any of your collection? I just like to work on my own, because designing a piece is so personal for me, I feel its best done by me on my own terms and liking. What is your most recent collection? The knitwear evening dresses. I am so excited about them and it will be first showcased at the Aberdeen Fashion Weekend. One of the memorable collections was Tartan- my 2013 Fall Collection. I made it specifically for Brooklyn Fashion Weekend but I also showcased it in Nairobi during the Kenya Fashion Awards.

How to wear black and white

Work it with Your Body Shape: Sometimes the body shape of a woman doesn’t allow her to don the look that’s on fashion. These two opposite colors, however, really look good on any size and figure, but one should know how to wear them. Black is able to give a very slimming appeal; so it should be worn in areas where you want to look slim. Ladies with heavy bottoms can wear white on top and black at bottom to keep attention away from their problem areas. If you’ve a smaller chest, wear black top with snowy patterns, such as floral or geometric. This will be helpful in creating an illusion of fuller body. When & How to Wear: Well, these colours are most elegant color choices which can be worn at any place or on any occasion, be it birthday party, wedding, business meetings, or any other formal or informal occasion. This combination looks great even at the beach parties. Pair a black pencil skirt with white ruffled blouse along with black

pumps for work, or a zebra print pretty dress for any friends’ getaway or get-together. Whatever the occasion, just remember not to wear plain white button down shirt and black dress pants without any accessories, or else you’ll confused for the waitress. But still if you want to go with this combination, then don’t forget to accessorize with some elegant accessories. Monochromatic Outfit: You don’t have to be dramatic when pairing these two opposites. Simply wear black leggings and tunic of same color and look stylish! Just add a touch of opposite colour jewelry. Compliment this look with pearl jewelry, plain black pumps or flats with bit silver work. It will give your monochromatic outfit a kick of style. The same goes for dress in all white. However it’s normally a good idea to wear same colour shoes and pants to elongate legs. This is especially recommended for short women. Play with Textures Patterns: Black

and white dresses have been around for a long time. However as time changes, so do the trends. When wearing this look one should try latest mix of texture and patterns so it doesn’t look boring. Try wearing

bubble skirts, ruffles, patent leather, lace, ruching, beaded embroidery, or any other type of embellishments that really accentuate the look. In patterns you can go for black white polka dots or patch work.

Demand your rights before accepting to be handcuffed The warning over fake City Hall is timely as it will make Nairobians question law enforcers before they offer to be handcuffed (Pedestrians beware of fake City Hall gangs, September 9, 2014). I have known it is my right to demand that anyone who wants to arrest me for whatever reason must identify themselves positively. Cutting deals with the crooks with bribes is irresponsible.

RVP can’t wait to partner with Sh21b recruits

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie insists he can’t wait to play alongside the club’s expensive new arrivals. United splashed about Sh21.9billion during the transfer window, breaking the UK record to sign Angel di Maria from Real Madrid. Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind also joined the former champions. A frantic end to the transfer window also saw United sign Colombian star Radamel Falcao on a lucrative one-year loan from French side Monaco. Such was the flurry of arrivals that only Di Maria and Herrera made their Premier League debuts before the international break. Shaw was not yet fully fit while Rojo was unable to obtain a valid UK work permit in

time. But the likes of Falcao, Rojo and Blind are expected to make debuts at Old Trafford against QPR on Sunday and Van Persie says he is relishing the opportunity to work alongside the new signings. “I can’t wait to go and train and play with the world-class players we have signed – wow,” the Netherlands international told reporters. “That feeling, that we are going to perform well has only got stronger after the buying of players over the last weeks. I find it very exciting, the arrival of all those new players. “For me personally, it’s brilliant to go and play with some of the best players in the world. It’s great that I can go and train and play with them every day.”

High flyer: Robin van Persie has been in superb form for Manchester United since his arrival from Arsenal. Van Persie insists he can’t wait to play alongside the club’s expensive new arrivals.

Pistorius murder trial ruling set for Thursday

Oscar Pistorius could spend years in prison even if he is acquitted later this week of deliberately murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The judge will begin delivering her verdict on Thursday, six months after the celebrity athlete first wept and vomited when the court heard that Steenkamp’s head had “exploded” like a watermelon under the impact of a hollow-point bullet. Pistorius killed the blonde law graduate when he

fired four shots through a locked toilet door in his upmarket Pretoria home after screaming “Get the fuck out of my house!” The double-amputee athlete doesn’t deny this. The only question is why he did it. He says he thought he was shooting at an intruder. Prosecution says he killed her in a fit of rage after an argument. The personality of the Paralympian gold medallist, who won worldwide fame

when he competed on his prosthetic ‘blades’ against able-bodied runners at the London Olympics, was a focus of the trial. Prosecutors described him as an egotistical liar obsessed with guns, fast cars and beautiful women. Defence lawyers said there are “two Oscars” — a worldclass athlete and a highly vulnerable individual with a serious disability who acted out of fear, not anger, when he fired the fatal shots.

Returning Simiyu wants to play for Kenya again after knee injury

GET BACK HERE: Innocent Simiyu (centre) is tackled during an IRB World Sevens Series game. He has been out of action with an injury for three years.

Barca’s Munir: I was always going to be a Spain player Spain forward Munir El-Haddadi says he never considered playing for Morocco, despite receiving offers to represent the country of his father’s birth. Barca starlet Munir, 19, made his senior La Roja debut in Monday’s straightforward 5-1 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Macedonia, despite only having played two first-team games for his club and having made his under-21 debut for Spain just last week. This has led to speculation that the Spanish FA had been keen to ensure Munir played a senior competitive game to secure the services of such a promising talent, and reports that the Moroccan FA had

been in touch to persuade the talented youngster to switch allegiance to them. Madrid-born Munir said at the Ciutat de Valencia stadium that he had not been seriously considering declaring for Morocco. “This is a childhood dream come true,” Munir said. “It is true that everything is moving very fast, but I try and stay calm and keep working. I never had doubts about playing for Spain. I was born here and am very happy to have done it. To play for Spain was my own decision. I knew what it meant to do so.” The teenager admitted that he had felt under pressure while making such a huge decision .

Former Kenya 7s skipper Innocent Simiyu has set his sights on regaining his place in the national team after a three-year injury lay off. Simiyu was injured playing for Cheetahs in the 2011 Bamburi Rugby Super Series. He returned to action at the Christie 7s last weekend featuring for his Impala RFC side in the final leg of the 2014 Safaricom Sevens circuit. Impala team lost 27-17 to Mwamba in the main cup final. “It’s great to return to action after such a long time. My target is to play for the national team again,” Simiyu said. “My hope is just to keep on playing. I train hard to see where it takes me and if it takes me to the highest level, well and good if it takes me to club level at Impala, well and good. “The biggest thing is to improve on my form and hope one day it will open the door at the national team, I’m focusing on getting my body back in shape.” Simiyu has two other rugby playing brothers, former national team captain Victor Sudi and Nato, whom he partnered with to inspire the Ngong Road side to their first Sevens Series final this season. Simiyu says Kenya will qualify for 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but only if players are given time to showcase their talent rather than being restricted to a certain style of play.

Wrestlers fight to keep Olympic spot Wrestling which has been in the Olympics since 1896 could be removed from the 2020 Games. The International Olympic Committee is in the process of reviewing the schedule for the 2020 Olympics. There are 25 core sports and the International Olympic Committee has been doing an audit of each based on several factors among them TV ratings, popularity worldwide and ticket sales. Mark Adams, the IOC spokesman said there are up to 39 criteria to be used to determine which sport should be retained. Besides wrestling, modern pentathlon, taekwondo and field hockey are also marked for exclusion. Seven other disciplines - wakeboarding, chinese martial art of wushu, squash, baseball/softball, sport climbing, karate and roller sports - are vying with wrestling for the single spot in the 2020 Games. The IOC leadership will vote on this next month in Buenos Aires. At the IOC executive meeting in Switzerland in February 2013, wrestling was voted out from the 2020 Olympics. But, there could be a reprieve at the preceding IOC meetings the if voting patterns change.

Ex-fiancee sues Mayweather for abuse, theft Floyd Mayweather is alleged to have subjected his ex-fiancee to years of torment through physical and emotional abuse, court papers have revealed. The undefeated world champion is accused by Shantel Jackson of battering, blackmailing, imprisoning and stealing from her. Mayweather, who is set to fight Marcos Maidana this weekend, faces a trial by jury after the former lover filed the lawsuit. The 29-year-old model announced she was suing Mayweather last week, telling a news conference he beat her and invaded her privacy. She claimed he posted a picture of an ultrasound scan online and announced they broke up because she aborted their twin babies. But in sensational court documents, the full extent of the boxer’s tumultuous on-off eight year relationship with the beauty is laid bare in painful detail. Shantel says she suffered years of hell at the hands of Mayweather, 37, whose “outrageous acts” caused her “pain and

humiliation.” During an argument, he allegedly choked and twisted her arm, while in another he held her at gun-point and threatened to shoot her. He also kept her ‘prisoner’ in his Las Vegas home, threatened to publish naked pictures he had secretly taken of her while she slept and stole thousands of US dollars worth of assets from her, her court filings claim. And in raging verbal attacks he called her a ‘bum’ and a ‘b*tch’ telling her, “You’re not sh*t without me. I made you who you are.” Shantel is seeking unspecified damages from Mayweather for battery, assault, defamation, invasion of privacy, false imprisonment, harassment and infliction of emotional distress. The case is due to be tried by a jury in Los Angeles for seven days, court papers show. Shantel met the boxer in 2006 when she was aged 21 and worked as a hostess at an event in Atlanta, Georgia.

Podolski admits Welbeck is ahead in pecking order

Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski admits new signing Danny Welbeck will be ahead of him in the pecking order at the Emirates. The former Manchester United striker joined the Gunners in a Sh2.34billion move on transfer deadline day. Welbeck is due to make his Premier League debut against Manchester City on Saturday. Welbeck scored a brace in England’s 2-0 win over Switzerland on Monday in the Euro 2016 qualifiers. And Podolski knows he will have to play second fiddle to the England international, at least at the start of Welbeck’s Arsenal career.

“Initially, it’s a difficult situation for me,” Podolski said. “When you buy new players for a lot of money they have an advantage because they will play. “But we’ve got a long season ahead of us, and we’ll see what happens. When I am in top shape, I am a perfect fit for the Arsenal team. “And I see myself in the first XI then, that’s what I work towards. I am not sure, (but) I hope that that’s the case.” Podolski had been linked with a move away from Arsenal during the transfer window.

South Africa are confident of ending a depressing record against Nigeria when they clash Wednesday in a 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. The Cape Town showdown is a highlight ofthe 14-fixture match day two schedule along with Cameroon-Ivory Coast in Yaounde and Egypt-Tunisia in Cairo. There were doubts whether the Nigeria game would go ahead,

but controversially-elected national football federation boss Chris Giwa quit to prevent a worldwide Fifa ban. African governing body CAF had warned Nigeria that failure to play in South Africa would result in disqualification from the competition. Reigning African champions Nigeria have won five and drawn one of six matches against South Africa in

the World Cup and Cup of Nations. Not only have Bafana Bafana (The Boys) failed to beat the Super Eagles, they have not scored a goal. The countries made contrasting Group A debuts last weekend with South Africa winning 3-0 in Sudan as Nigeria were stunned 3-2 by Congo Brazzaville.

Italy win as Czechs stun Holland

Antonio Conte and Guus Hiddink experienced contrasting fortunes in their first competitive games in charge of Italy and Holland in their respective Euro 2016 qualifiers while there was a shock defeat Bosnia on Tuesday night. The World Cup semi-finalists, with Guus Hiddink back in charge

after Louis van Gaal’s departure to Manchester United, fell behind in the 22nd minute, Borek Dockal blasting home a super effort off the inside of a post. Stefan de Vrij levelled 10 minutes after the break, but the Dutch were undone at the death as Vaclav Pilar capitalised on some poor defending

to net from close range. The shock of the night came in Group B as Cyprus stunned Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-1 away from home. Vedad Ibisevic put th hosts ahead after six minutes, but Demetris Christofi equalised on the stroke of half-time and then scored again in the 73rd minute. The hosts’ misery

was complete when Miralem Pjanic had his penalty saved by Antonis Georgallides. Simone Zaza and Leonardo Bonucci were on target to give Italy a 2-0 win in Norway and make it a dream start for Conte, who replaced Cesare Prandelli after he resigned following the Azzurri’s first-round exit at the

World Cup. The result in Group H also saw the Italians extend their impressive unbeaten record in qualifying to 41 games, stretching back eight years. Wales also came from behind to win 2-1 and had the brilliance of Gareth Bale to thank for earning them victory in Andorra.

Schumacher taken home to continue his recovery Former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has left a Swiss hospital and will continue his treatment at home after a ski accident in December, his family said Tuesday. In a surprise announcement, a spokeswoman for the family of the retired German racing star said he was being moved from a top-notch hospital in the Swiss city of Lausanne to his home in nearby Gland. “Henceforth Michael’s rehabilitation will take place at his home,” Sabine Kehm said, stressing that “considering the severe injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months”.

Asked when Schumacher had moved from the hospital, she said “Michael is home since today”. Kehm, however, stressed that the racing star was still facing “a long and difficult road ahead”. Schumacher’s move should not be interpreted as a sign of massive changes in his health status, the statement said without providing further details. The 45-year-old slammed his head on a rock while skiing with his son and friends at Meribel in the French Alps on December 29. The seven-time world champion underwent two operations to remove life-threatening blood clots after the freak accident that shocked the world.
