Judge rules on Pistorius murder trial From Page 1 Those familiar with the court say Pistorius’ trial is likely to be well over 100 pages. The Olympic double-amputee sprinter was accused of killing model girlfriend Reeve Steenkamp on the eve of Valentine’s Day on February 14, 2013. He has denied the charge claiming he thought it was an intruder gaining access into his home when he fired and killed her. But he is also facing three other
charges, including two counts of shooting a firearm in public and illegal possession of ammunition. There are several possible scenarios for Pistorius’ verdict. He could face a verdict of premeditated murder, common-law murder, or culpable homicide (manslaughter). The worst of the charges is 25 years in jail if found guilty of premeditated murder. A total of 37 witnesses have given evidence during hearing that started on March 3, last year. When he arrived at the court
Doctors union propose health services liaison unit The Kenya Medical Association (KMA) has called for the formation of a body to coordinate health issues between national and county governments as concerns mount over falling standards. The union says challenges facing the sector need an independent body that to liaise between the parties. National Chairman Elly Nyam who addressed journalists on Wednesday said the sector has deteriorated since the services were devolved and called for corrective action. “Kenya has made significant gains in healthcare that cannot be wished away and these must be protected at all costs,” he said. “The recent happenings in the sector threaten to take the country back significantly and corrective action must be taken immediately because if neglected it will be significantly expensive and time consuming to regain the lost ground,” he said. He said issues, such as the late remuneration More on this story at of workers, have posed challenges that require urgent attention. Nyam said medical interns have not been paid for five months even as they offer www.capitalfm.co.ke service “under the most difficult circumstances.” “Internship training remains a role of the National Government. It is difficult to understand how the young highly trained Kenyans, a majority of who are from poor backgrounds, are expected to continue undertaking back-breaking tasks month after month without pay,” he said. He said KMA was ready to help county and national governments navigate the transition without disruption of services. If the body is formed, one of its key functions should be handling and the rationalisation of staff to ensure the health of Kenyans is guaranteed.
today, a brief scuffle occurred as everyone tried to get a picture of Pistorius arrival in court on judgment day. When Judge Masipa started delivering the verdict, Pistorius intently stared at her. He could occasionally be seen wiping his eyes and breathing hard. The judge said the court had to approach evidence of each witness with caution because the incident occurred at dawn when most witnesses were in bed. “There were no eyewitnesses.
Notwithstanding this fact, there was no dearth of witnesses willing to assist this court… several witnesses gave evidence regarding what they heard, or what they thought they heard at the time of the incident,” the judge said. Although it appeared likely the court could acquit the accused of murder charges, Pistorius will most unlikely escape jail, especially after his lawyer conceded that the athlete should be found guilty of negligence for discharging a firearm in a restaurant. The offence
carries a maximum penalty of five years. Before the fatal shooting, the 27-year-old athlete was feted in South Africa and known as the “blade runner”. He had won gold at the 2012 London Paralympic Games and also competed at the Olympics. Ms Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model and law graduate, was hit three times by bullets shot through a toilet door by Pistorius at his home in Pretoria in the early hours of February 14, 2013.
Ugandan priest in UK charged with presiding over fake weddings
A Ugandan vicar has been accused of presiding over as many as 300 fake weddings in London. The Reverend Nathan Ntege started working at St Jude’s in Thornton Heath, South London, in 2002 before authorities discovered he was not trained in law on marriages on his appointment as a parish priest, his trial was told. Ntege, 55, is accused of presiding over a ‘matrimonial conveyor belt’, where immigrants from outside the European Union are said to have married British citizens to avoid deportation. The prosecution alleges that the plot was an abuse of UK immigration laws but Ntege’s lawyers say he could have been made a ‘scapegoat’ for a wider problem. “There was a wedding between a Nigerian and a Portuguese woman of easy virtue at another church, which was stopped,” said Vincent Davies, an Archdeacon with the church. “There were gangs of people roaming around doing this.” Alexander Robb, who has been a member of the church since 1939 and had acted as church warden and vice chairman of the Parochial Parish council, also gave evidence. He described Ntege as a man of “integrity and principle” but said he favoured Ugandans and their customs at the expense of other parishioners. Archdeacon Davies said: “He told me living in his country without being married was considered sinful, so he wanted to get as many people married as possible.” Seven defendants involved in the case have since denied a total of 51 charges relating to immigration offences. Trial continues.
BUSTED: The Reverend Nathan Ntege. Ntege has been accused of conducting hundreds of fake weddings at the St Jude’s Church in London.

Bill & Melinda Gates give Sh44b for Ebola fight
Africans are sick and tired of paying bribes Africans are sick and tired of paying bribes, a new study by research group, Transparency International has revealed. Transparency International (TI) researchers have confirmed that Africa is the continent most consistently plagued by official corruption and bribe-seeking. The latest figures show the fight against corruption on the continent is proceeding slowly. In a global survey carried out a few weeks ago, TI found that residents of Liberia and Sierra Leone reported the highest rates of bribe-paying in the whole world. Now,
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation yesterday announced that it will donate Sh4.4 billion to help fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The foundation says the money will be used to enable international aid organizations and national governments “to purchase badly needed supplies and scale up emergency operations in affected countries.”
a new survey from Afrobarometer, an organisation that gathers statistics, finds that in 34 African nations, almost 1 in 3 Africans say they’ve paid some sort of bribe recently - with the highest rates being reported in Kenya, Sierra Leone, Morocco, Guinea and Egypt. Majority of citizens say their governments have done a bad job fighting corruption. From the findings, Police attract the highest ratings of corruption across the 34 countries, with 43 per cent of people saying that “most” or “all” of them are involved in corruption.

IEBC donates biometric kits for State staff audit
digitAl:i EBC staff use biometric kit to register voters ahead of last year’s general election. the commission donated some of the kits for use in the ongoing state staff audit.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission will donate 200 Biometric Voter Registration kits to the government to help in the ongoing audit of public servants. The government will use the kits for biometric data collection in the ongoing Capacity Assessment & Rationalisation of the Public Service. Acting IEBC Chief Executive Officer Betty Nyabuto says 40 BVR kits have already been donated from the Nairobi regional office while the other 16 regional offices will each give 10 kits next week. “The commission did make a decision to have the requested BVR kits issued to the ministry but the commission had to make sure that the operating system has been cleaned and the data which was in the BVR system removed. The software as well has been cleared and therefore this is
just a shell so to speak,” she said. Nyabuto said this donation will not affect the operation of the commission in terms of continuous voter registration citing a surplus of BVR kits from the previous allocation. “We had 1,500 kits and we only need 10 per constituency to undertake the continuous voter registration process so this will not affect any of our operations as a commission and right now we do not need the entire 1,500,” she said. “We already have a robust register and the database is secure. All that we have done is to make sure that the operating system has been disabled and any other system as well. It is just hardware.” The ministry has already captured 36 per cent of the total public servants during the audit.
Violence continues in Mandera with two more killed despite ceasefire Two people were last night killed and one wounded in fresh inter-clan attacks in Darkale area, Banisa, Mandera County. Locals say more than 100 camels were stolen in the incident that happened about 10 kilometers from Banisa
town, breaking a ceasefire agreed on earlier between the local leaders of the feuding clans. Locals said the Darkale attack is the second since the weekend ceasefire agreement witnessed by top security officers. The incident
happened as Inspector General of police David Kimaiyo said five leaders from Mandera County have recorded statements with police and 43 suspects arrested in connection with the ongoing inter-clan fighting in the area that has
left more than a dozen people dead and others displaced. Kimaiyo said he expects more Mandera and Wajir county leaders to record cautionary statements at the respective headquarters. He said three AK 47 rifles and 423 bullets have so far been
recovered in an operation that is ongoing in the area. More than 50 people have been killed in the fighting between Degodia and Garre clans in Mandera County, leaving hundreds others displaced over the last three weeks.

US to go after the ISIL with sustained bombing raids
US President Barack Obama (pictured), has announced an open-ended bombing campaign against Islamic State militants in which airstrikes will extend into Syria for the first time. He made the announcement in a televised address on the eve of the thirteenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks despite acknowledging that the extremist group did not currently pose a direct threat to the US homeland.
In the speech analysts have described as interventionist, Obama announced an aggressive offensive to combat Isis, which is responsible for the beheading of two American journalists in the past month. “I have made it clear that we will hunt down terrorists who threaten our country, wherever they are,” Obama said. “That means I will not hesitate to take action against ISIL in Syria, as well as Iraq. Obama said the air strikes were a necessary counter-terrorism measure to prevent the group from becoming a future threat to the US. “We will conduct a systematic campaign of airstrikes against these terrorists,” he added. The Syrian opposition has already applauded the announcement and called for
action. Obama made clear the strategy differed from all-out war again in Iraq less than three years after he withdrew combat forces from the country. “It will not involve American combat troops fighting on foreign soil,” Obama said. Noting the formation of a new Iraqi government, which his administration has demanded, Obama announced that “America will lead a broad coalition to roll back this terrorist threat.”

Rape by peacekeepers in Somalia African Union peacekeepers in Somalia rape women seeking drugs and food on their bases and routinely pay displaced teenage girls for sex, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has reported. Ayanna, Mogadishu Ayanna went to the Burundian base to get medicine for her sick baby. A Somali interpreter working there told her to return without the child. When she returned, he called her and three other young women over to a fenced area where six soldiers were waiting. The soldiers dragged them into a bunker, beat and raped them. One woman was badly hurt.

Foreign investors take flight from Zimbabwe
DHL ‘hires’ investors for African presence EXPANDING: DHL Express expansion of operations in Sub-Sahara Africa is expected to create thousands of jobs.
As international mail service company, DHL Express, expands its footprint in Sub-Sahara Africa, thousands of people stand to gain from job opportunities the company offers. By partnering with local business owners who act as DHL resellers, the number of service points have
increased from 300 to over 3,300 in only three years. The company has said it is willing to partner with entrepreneurial businesses that see value in becoming DHL resellers. All partners are provided with a complete branding kit and go through extensive training programmes to en-
sure compliance with DHL’s requirements. “It’s a win-win approach,” says Sumesh Rahavendra, Head of Marketing for DHL Express Sub Sahara Africa. “We have given the small shop owners a unique opportunity to grow revenues and gain credibility by aligning themselves with an
international brand. If they do well, we do well,” he says. Rahavendra tells the story of a DHL reseller in Kenya whose mobile phone accessories shop is located opposite a DHL store. She said clients perceive the outlet as affordable and less formal than the one across the road.
1.Foreign investors lose faith in Zimbabwe Foreign investment in Zimbabwe has dropped by more than 50 per cent in the first six months of the year, central bank chief John Mangudya has said. President Robert Mugabe’s landslide win last year has coincided with a rapid slowdown in the economy as foreigners shy away from the struggling economy. “The country received a paltry $67 million (Sh5.9 billion) compared with $165 million (Sh14.6 billion) over the same period in 2013,” said Mangudya. A previous government policy to hand economic control to black Zimbabweans was mistaken by investors, he said. “The nation needs to fight the negative perception that Zimbabweans continue to create, knowingly or unknowingly, for ourselves. The negative perception towards the country by foreigners is mainly emanating from within Zimbabwe,” he said in a monetary statement titled ‘Back to Basics’. The bank welcomed European Union’s move to ease sanctions on the
country. It also urged US to review its rules “to assist this small economy to attract the much-needed capital for recovery,” Mangudya said. 2.Tea body imports 70,000 tonnes of manure to cut prices The Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) says the Government has imported more than 70,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser for smallscale farmers in the 2014/15 crop year. Chief Executive Officer Lerionka Tiampati said the first consignment of 37,000 tonnes arrived in Mombasa on July 25, 2014, and the second late last month. The Ministry of Agriculture has since last year distributed fertiliser through the National Cereals and Produce Board depots where farmers buy them at lower prices. The ministry hopes imported manure will be available to farmers at affordable rate. A 50kg bag of Diamonium Phosphate that previously cost Sh4,000 is available at Sh2,500, while a 50kg bag of Calcium Ammonium Nitrate that previously cost Sh2,500 is available at Sh1,500.

Don roots for pigs rearing as pork popularity grows Kenya’s pig industry has grown at a slow but steady pace. Experts say the growing popularity of pork presents an opportunity for farmers. “Pig production is, along with poultry production, the fastest growing livestock sector worldwide… this trend is expected to continue over the coming years,” says Samuel Maina Githigia, a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nairobi. “From an economic perspective, pigs are assets that represent a store of wealth or safety net for times of crisis,” says Sam Okuthe, a consultant epidemiologist for FAO. Nearly 100 million tonnes of pork are consumed worldwide and Kenyan farmers only need to be empowered in valueaddition to maximise earnings. Pork is one of the most widely consumed types
of meat in the world, accounting for about 38 per cent of worldwide production. Kenya stands to learn from countries such as Denmark where the number of pigs is almost three times the number of people. Denmark also happens to be among the most food secure countries in the world Meanwhile, Kenya is the second largest exporter of pork in Africa, selling $7.4 million (Sh656 million) worth of the meat every year. Dr Christine Mburugu, a researcher on behalf of agribusiness group, Agri Pro Focus, says pig farmers do not thrive in Kenya because animal feed prices have been rising, making pigs a risky investment. Lack of access to proper breeding facilities. Dr Mburugu says groups such as the Kenya Livestock Producers Association can give farmers a lifeline in form of superior pig breeds.

UK minister warns Scotland of recession in case of ‘divorce’
The First Minister of Scotland has jokingly suggested that the country could default on their share of the United Kingdom’s national debt if the Sterling Pound is not shared. Alex Salmond taunted the Westminster parties by saying “What are they going to do? – invade?” A claim
has been dismissed by his spokesman as total nonsense. He is on the campaign trail in Edinburgh as he urges voters to vote yes and accept independence from the UK. Scotland have been warned they face being plunged into a deep recession if they gain independence from the UK. Falling wages, soaring
unemployment and millions of pounds heading south are some of the problems they are likely to face. Salmond is under pressure to accept Scotland’s £100billion (Sh14.3 trillion) share of Britain’s national debt if UK refuses to let him use the pound. But he insists that he would enter into a
currency union to continue using the pound, something that has been rejected by Labour, Tories and Liberal Democrats. The Scottish National Party has suggested that a currency deal would be a condition of Scotland accepting its share of the national debt.

What to do if your grant proposal is rejected
WHAT’S YOUR IDEA? A panel of judges listesn to the business pitches of startups at the Ole Sereni Hotel in Nairobi during a previous event.
More local startups surviving, thanks to angel investors Survival chances of new business are much higher today, thanks to financiers known in business as angel investors. “Angel investors are individuals who personally invest directly in a business. Often, they invest in early stage business,” says Ms Perez Ochieng’, the CEO of Sacoma, a business support consultancy. This year, 14 technology start-ups in Kenya qualified to get a share of Sh5.1 billion that private equity investors have set aside for buying mobile app firms. Other Kenyan software developers have been thrust to global prominence and won global awards and huge

investments to shape up their start-ups. Last year the Savannah Fund, a firm specializing in early stage web and mobile startups, was launched in Sub-Saharan Africa with its first initial focus on Kenya and East Africa. The Fund offers financing of roughly Sh2.2 million to Sh44.3 million. A statement from the owners of the fund says the idea funding is meant to bridge the gap in the early stage angel investment style that currently exists in Kenya. Mr. George Miseda has had the privilege of benefiting from angel investors. In 2008, he formed a publishing firm, Asset Link, and
approached Sacoma to help him through the initial phases. He said through Sacoma, he got to know an overseas company that joined in a partnership, which gave him the incentive for growth. Traditionally, an angel investor is a successful high net worth individual looking to get involved in a growing business for various reasons, ranging from seeking opportunities to use their expertise, tax benefits or even shrewd investment opportunities. Ms Ochieng’ says this is one way through which small enterprises can raise finances for their operations.
I&M Bank Tower dwarfs neighbours The Investment & Mortgages (I&M) Bank Tower is 325-foot building with 18 floors, located in Nairobi’s Central Business District. Completed in 2001, the structure is known for its impressive height and its dark blue windows. The building stands on Kenyatta Avenue, adjacent to the Kenyan headquarters of CFC Stanbic Bank. The tower is the head office of I&M Bank Limited, a member of the I&M Bank Group, which is a financial services provider in Eastern Africa. In the past, the building also served as the headquarters of the Standard Group, which includes The Standard newspaper and the Kenya Television Network station.
Non-government organisations depend on grants to finance their operations. However, some are unable to get the funding they need due to poorly crafted proposals. “Grant proposal writing is the “Go big or go home” of the fundraising world,” explains Author, Robin Toal for grant raising organisation, Funds for NGOs. When a proposal is successful, it can save entire organisations and communities. When it goes wrong, Toal says that “you have potentially lost hundreds of hours of work and investment with very little to show for it.” Toal, a marketing strategist who has worked with organisations like the Kenyabased One Acre Fund, has outlined a series of actions an organisation can take to revive its grant application.
The first step is to contact the funder, ideally by telephone, to try to discover the reasons they have chosen not to support you. “This insight can be invaluable and will help you to revise and improve your project for future applications.” Toal insists that an organisation’s representative should ask whether the two parties can meet to discuss how they might be able to work together in the future. This, he says, will demonstrate a willingness to adapt as well as a commitment to working together that may provide dividends in the future. “Invite the funder to come and visit one of your best projects in action,” argues Toal. Many funders prefer to witness exciting and innovative projects first hand.
infrastructure Design of proposed Malindi-Bagamoyo highway almost ready Designs for a highway that will link Kenyan and Tanzanian coastlines are almost complete. East African Community officials have said that the designs are for a 460 kilometre stretch dubbed the Malindi-Bagamoyo Highway. The Sh52.2 million road will start in Malindi, pass through Mombasa and Lunga Lunga on the Kenyan side and cross over to Tanga and on to Bagamoyo in north eastern Tanzania. Hosea Nyangweso, the
EAC’s Principal Civil Engineer, has said, the African Development Bank (AfDB) has agreed to fund the project. Construction will begin in 2016. The project will take three years to complete, Engineer Nyangweso has said. He added that the highway will improve road transport along the two coastlines. The road will also unlock a number of opportunities for both countries in the name of tourism, trade and shipping.

Save students from EBK stance About a fortnight ago, the Engineering Board of Kenya (EBK) announced universities it accredits to offer engineering degrees in the country. The Commission of University Education (CUE) has demanded that Parliament gives it absolute mandate over accreditation of courses to be offered in universities. Already, first year engineering students are in class in various universities, including those excluded from the EBK list. This brings confusion. Who should approve the university curricula, CUE or professional bodies like EBK? Graduates and students enrolled in courses in universities not recognised by professional bodies remain jobless. They cannot practice because
their umbrella body does not recognise them. For instance, Kenyatta University has sued the EBK demanding accreditation of its engineering programmes and graduates, who currently cannot work. Parliament must work immediately to rescue these students and graduates who are the arena of the protracted boxing session of the professional bodies and CUE. Professional bodies and CUE are creatures of parliament. They are serving the same people. Students cannot waste time in class for six or seven years studying and be denied a chance to work. If there are issues on the course content, the Ministry must iron them out with the bodies, the commission and universities. Otherwise,

It is a nature human desire to be treated with kindness, especially when in unfamiliar surroundings. Kenya, being one of the vibrant tourist attractions in the region, welcomes many visitors, both local and international to the various recreational centres and interesting sites on holidays and weekends. A diploma in hotel and catering management will give you cutting edge skills to work in this arena.

Incorporation of the podcasts in online studies gives an equal opportunity to a wide clientele. One can learn while on transit. The irritating traffic jams that are characteristic of city roads can be turned into study opportunities. Downloaded files are listened to at a personalised level. This
is a creation of extra time that a student may not get while they are busy at work or at home preparing for the following day’s chores. Computers have been around for some time. But not all people who may want to learn know how to operate them given that they may be in remote areas. Podcast delivers content
directly to one’s ear. It does not take much know how to decode the information. with time, podcast learning improves one’s listening skills, attentiveness, and multi-tasking abilities. Kenya is still at an infant stage in developing ICT infrastructure for online studies especially for all learners including the
physically challenged. Podcast allows even visually impaired students to learn on this emerging platform. They do not need eyes to see, but ears to listen and understand. However, it may counterproductive if used while engaging is work that requires much concentration.

lineofduty Private Chefs A private chef may work for a single or multiple employers in accordance with available opportunities in the sector. Private chefs are either specialised in particular cuisines or all rounded. Their work is to plan, prepare and cook meals for their employers. Private chefs were known to serve the wealthy but nowadays, modest and middle class households also seek their services. Private chefs are highly respected and esteemed by peers for what they do because it is challenging This job is so consuming that people do not stand it for long. Because the employer takes precedence, this can be tough. A private chef must be equipped with a diverse set of skills. He/she must display maturity, wellroundedness, flexibility, patience, organisation
skills and a talent for life and etiquette. If working for a single household, the chef must develop with it. Get along and understand the employer’s needs, preferences and dislikes. Respect and know your space as defined by your employer. Since households are different, there are chefs who may sit with employers during meals but others require them to keep a distance. You therefore have to be adept at dealing with different people. Separation of space between a chef and an employer does not mean they presume him or her less human but is a means of keeping family affairs private. Being a private chef comes with satisfactory and high burnout rates. One has to be committed and disciplined to handle their duties.

Skateboarding is one of the most dangerous recreational extreme sports. It involves riding and performing tricks on a skateboard. It can also be considered a method of transportation. The recreational sport is freestyle, meaning that here are no rules involved. The skateboarder uses their imagination and skill to perform spectacular but dangerous manoeuvres, including somersaults. There are no limits to what they do and it can be done on the streets, in parks or even on mountains. With the thrills comes extreme risks. Regardless of a skateboarder’s skills and mastery of the art, high-speed falls are almost inevitable. Skateboarding requires one to dodge hazards like oncoming traffic, rocks or human traffic. Chances of losing balance are high when a skater is trying to avoid an obtacle. Unlike other extreme sports, safety gear is not required but it is highly recommended that skaters always wear a helmet. Many of them are cocky teenagers full of overconfidence but lacking the skills and training for the risky stunts they try out. Dr. Vani J. Sabesan, an orthopedic surgeon at Western Michigan University School of Medicine, did a study on the incidence of head and neck injuries. It showed that more than 40,000 head and neck injuries occur annually among participants in seven extreme sports, including skateboarding.

forecast
THURsday, SEPTEMBER 11, 2014
HOROSCOPES capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19
A friend could ask for a loan and you might hesitate to give him or her the money. Follow your instincts. The person probably isn’t too savvy about money. You might want to participate in some group activities, but don’t let people take unfair advantage of you.
aquarius Jan 20 - Feb
Today you’re likely to experience a powerful burst of energy that may temporarily turn you into a workaholic. Chores may have piled up around the house that desperately need to be done. You may want to go through them like wildfire. You don’t have to do them all at once.
pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20
Today you should feel especially sexy and relationships with romantic partners should go well, Pisces. Your passions are intense, the lines of communication are open, and appreciation of one another is running high. There might be talk of taking a long trip together in the future. Plan a cozy evening for two.
Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19
Frustration may be the word for today, Pisces. You could be experiencing a bit of wanderlust. Distant states and foreign lands may beckon to you, but circumstances could make it hard for you to get away. There might also be friction with your partner.
taurus Apr 20 - May 20
There might be a lot of work to do at home today. Since certain family members are conveniently absent, you may feel that the burden falls on you. Don’t be a martyr, however. Just do what you can and leave the rest. Uncertainties about money could also be on your mind, but put these aside for now.
gemini May 21 - Jun 21
Too much indulging may leave you with a headache or stomachache to the point where you may want to spend most of today sleeping. The stress of this condition could cause you to snap at family members, but remember that they weren’t the ones who chose to overindulge.
cancer Jun 22 - Jul 22
You like to be honest with those you care about, but today you’re likely to be a bit too honest. Don’t be too quick to take offense, and watch the tendency to be too blunt. If you temper your honesty with some diplomacy, you should get your message across with a minimum of hurt feelings.
leo Jul 23 - Aug 22
It might feel like your home has turned into Grand Central Station. Lots of visitors, messengers, and others are going to drop by, and you may just want to watch TV or read a book. This could lead to some understandable irritation. However, be your usual polite self. If possible, get a family member to screen your callers.

virgo Aug 23 -Sep 22
You might have to do a lot of running around when you probably want to stay home. Obligations to friends and family are likely to come up, and even though you’re a bit tired you’ll want to help out. The best plan for today is to get everything done as quickly as possible and then spend the rest of the day relaxing alone.
libra Sep 23 - Oct 22
Don’t be surprised if lots of visitors show up today. Perhaps you’re hosting an impromptu social event or neighbors bring news of changes nearby. You should be brimming with energy, so you can handle it, but you might find it a bit unnerving if it gets too exciting.

scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 21
You could be feeling a bit antsy today and may want to spend time exercising or trying a new sport or game that you’ve never played before. This is great. Ask some friends to join you. Don’t push yourself past your limits.
sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21
An exciting communication could inform you of an advancement opportunity that you should explore. While you’d be quick to act under normal circumstances, Sagittarius, today you might be more cautious. You’ve sought recognition for a while, so don’t be too reticent.

Kidero has no excuse for Nairobi residents and must deliver
Dr Evans Kidero has no excuse of not delivering on his pledges now that the court has confirmed him as Nairobi governor (Kidero says he is ready to deliver to city residents, September 10, 2014). Commission on Revenue

Cars undergo vetting ahead of Safari Rally Rally cars underwent inspection at the Galerria Mall, Nairobi, on Wednesday morning ahead of this year’s Safari Rally. The cars were checked under the supervision of FIA delegate, Steve Burkin, of South Africa and Musa Locho, the Chief Scrutineer. “That was intended at ensuring all rules are adhered to, especially with issues related to safety equipment such as anti-roll bars, fire-extinguishers among others. A lot was done, including a medical officer whose job was to make sure all the
first-aid boxes in each of the cars have the right materials as part of safety checks,’’ said Locho. “All these items have expiry periods on them and nobody will be allowed to participate if items are found to be faulty,’’ he said. Wednesday was for cars from the lower end visiting the venue on while drivers from the top end who include foreign competitors will come in Thursday morning. Gary Chanyes of Cote d’Ivoire, Zambia’s Mohammed Essa and Jas Mangat of Uganda are among the top
crews vying for top honours at the 62nd edition of the rally. Chanyes leads the ARC table followed by Essa with Kenya and Madagascar remaining. The main focus will be on the two main drivers eyeing glory in the continental series but local drivers will not lose sight of the battle for the top honours in the Kenya National Rally Championship. The likes of Baldev Chager, Jaspreet Chatthe, Carl Tundo, Ian Duncan and Rajbir Rai are among the leading drivers out to claim glory in the event.

Dzeko sees Chelsea as the biggest threat to Man City Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko believes that Chelsea will pose the biggest threat to the Citizens’ efforts to retain their Premier League title, but concedes a number of teams could be in the running. The Blues are many pundits’ favourites to claim top-flight glory this season, with the addition of Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas only en-
hancing an already powerful squad. Dzeko is well aware of the threat Jose Mourinho’s side carry as City look to claim their third title in four seasons. “It will be difficult, but I’m an optimist,” the striker told City’s official website of their title bid. “As with every season, there are several teams that will
battle for the title of champions in England. “This season Chelsea might be the most serious challenger, but we mustn’t ignore Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, or United, who will certainly be much stronger than last year. “After all, everyone has gotten stronger, and everyone wants to be first.

The assurance is vital considering the Westgate Mall terrorist attack coincided with last year’s event occasioning the withdrawal of a team from England. Also, there is the Ebola epidemic in West Africa which has seen many international teams withdraw from events held locally. A total of 19 teams have so far “expressed commitment to participate” with organizers expecting a full-house. Kenya will have two teams, Morans and defending champions Shujaa, with Argentina and Samoa the only other core teams in the picture so far. Three teams - Wailers, England Students, and Welsh Warriors – are expected from the UK while South Africa will be represented by

with Wiggle Honda for two seasons, who are a big UCI team, and while Pearl Izumi aren’t a UCI team, they still do some UCI races, so there will be a lot of opportunities for me both at home and abroad. “I am excited about having a UK-based team and the support of the UK races. The main thing for me is that we are two years out from Rio, and it will be really good to have that backing.” Rowsell was also convinced to step down from a UCI-rated team to a domestic squad by a strengthening of women’s cycling in the UK over the past few years. The club said net income plunged 84% for the year to 30 June to Sh3.47billion, from Sh21.32billion a year ago. It comes a month after the team announced a Sh109 billion 10-year shirt manufacturer sponsorship deal with Adidas. The club said revenue rose 19% to Sh63.22b compared with Sh53billion a year earlier. But Manchester United said it expected revenue in 2015 to fall to between Sh56.21billion and Sh57.67billion due to failure to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years. United said underlying profits were Sh19. 13billion for the year to 30 June, compared with Sh15.77billion a year earlier. It said it expected annual profits would fall
next year to between shs13.14billion and Sh13.87billion. Ed Woodward, executive vice chairman, said: “With Louis van Gaal at the helm as manager, and the recent signing of some of the world’s leading players to strengthen our squad, we are excited about the future and believe it’s the start of a new chapter in the club’s history. “Louis’ footballing philosophy fits well with Manchester United and he has an impressive track record of success throughout his career, winning league titles with every club he has managed.” The results also showed former Manchester United manager David Moyes and his back room staff received a total of Sh759million in compensation following his sacking in April after less than a year in the job.

Edward Seda is almost there. At

The second edition of the SuperSport media fun day will be held this Friday at the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) grounds. A total of 10 teams will contest for this year’s honours, including
defending champions Bloggers who won the inaugural football tournament last year. The online scribes have been pooled in the Group of Death which includes Standard Media
who they beat for the trophy last year. Citizen who reached the semis, MediaMax and SuperSport are all in a tough and tricky Pool ‘A’. Citizen and Standard are expected to give Bloggers a run for the money in the group with MediaMax and SuperSport the dark horses. An open Group B will see Nation take on national broadcaster KBC, Capital FM, Radio Africa and reigning plate champions Media Select. The one-day five-aside tournament will be played on a round robin format, with every match lasting only six minutes. The two top teams in every pool will qualify for the semis.
Di Montezemolo steps down as Ferari chair Supersport media tournament back
Ferrari’s Luca Di Montezemolo is to step down as long-time chairman of the Formula 1 team. The departure follows a poor season on the track and disagreements with Sergio Marchionne, chief executive officer of parent company Fiat. “This is the end of an era after almost 23 marvellous and unforgettable years,” said Di Montezemolo, 67. “It has been a great privilege.” Marchionne will replace Di Montezemolo who leaves on October 13. Ferrari have not won a drivers’ or constructors’ title since 2008 and are in the midst of the least competitive season in 20 years. The team had their worst result of the year at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday when Fernando Alonso
retired with a hybrid system failure as team-mate Kimi Raikkonen finished ninth. The performance is in stark contrast to their dominance of F1 in the late 1990s and early 2000s when seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher led the team to six consecutive constructors’ championships. Di Montezemolo had insisted at the weekend that reports he was to step down later this year were premature. He said he had a threeyear contract and would be the one to say when he would quit. But he was immediately contradicted by Marchionne, who said: “We are good friends but his statements... these are things I wouldn’t have said myself.”

Stanchart marathon target big field The 2014 Stanchart Nairobi International Marathon officially started yesterday with the launch of the registration of participants. Organizers say their target is to reach 25,000 entries for the race this year. At the first of the two launch events, organisers also said MicroChip timing will be used in both men and women 10Km races for the first time, a reflection of the growing popularity of the category. Organisers also said they have separated the finishing points for the 21km and full marathons although they will both end inside Nyayo National Stadium. This is an attempt
to avoid confusion during the October 26 race now in its 12th year. Stanchart CEO, Lamin Manjang, said more elite athletes are expected as they hope to enist more than the 23,000 entries from 68 countries last year. “This race has become very popular. We want to enhance professionalism in the management,” Manjang said. “In the next two years with the help of the government, AK, willing sponsors, we want to push up the status of the marathon because we believe that this event has what it takes to rival other big marathons including London, New York, Boston and the like.”
