Varsity students dare Helb MONday, SEPTEmber 15, 2014

From Page 1 But in a quick response, Helb Chief Executive Charles Ringera said all students will get their loans starting today. The Student Organisation of the University of Nairobi (Sonu) president Babu Owino and his Moi University counterpart Charles Juma on Monday issued the warning, saying students were finding it hard to cope without the

loans. “We are sick and tired of sleeping hungry, missing classes and being broke. We are giving Helb 97 hours to ensure students have the money in their accounts failure to which the consequences will be better imagined than experienced,” Babu said. “Our students cannot become Koinange traders because of being subjected to lowest levels

of poverty,” Juma said in apparent reference to prostitution that Koinange Street is notoriously known for. He said the agency has done everything to ensure the students receive the funds. “We expect that every student will have money in their accounts between tomorrow (today) and Friday,” he said. He said delays in the release of the

funds was caused by unusual early opening by public universities which he said recalled the students two weeks earlier. “Remember universities have been opening on the second week of September but they opened around first of September this time round,” he said. Any strike or demonstrations would greatly affect activities at the public institutions. The last time

the students staged a protest led to the disruption of businesses in Nairobi’s Central Business District. Motorists were also blocked, stoned and even robbed of their belongings by rowdy hooligans. Chaos broke out after police moved in to disperse demonstrators in a countrywide strike last April.

UK filmmaker re-creates Westgate raid into a movie British filmmaker Dan Reed assembled thousands of hours of footage captured by more than 100 security cameras inside Westgate mall in September 2013 when it was attacked by terrorists and made an hour-long documentary Terror at the Mall. The pictures will be aired on HBO tonight. In the film, Reed employs an immersive, youare-there approach, with no academic experts to orient viewers on how the Shaabab arose or why the group would want to attack shoppers in Kenya, reports the New York Times. Witnesses recount passing references by attackers to revenge for Kenya’s invasion of Somalia in 2011. “What I’ve tried to do is create a sense of the intimacy of violence,” Mr. Reed, 49, said in an interview at HBO’s Manhattan headquarters last week shortly before the premiere screening. “It’s that collision of worlds that happens in a protected space. There they are eating cake at the cafe. Here they are lying in a pool of blood.” “Terror at the Mall” is Reed’s third TV film about a deadly urban siege in 11 years. In 2003, he made “Terror in Moscow,” about the day-long standoff at a Moscow theatre with Chechens who were armed with guns and wearing suicide vests. In 2009, his “Terror in Mumbai” chronicled the spree of shootings and bombings by members of the Pakistan-based militants, Lashkar-e-Taiba. But the Westgate story drained him the most, saying he struggled at times with steeping himself in such dark material. “Making this one really broke my heart,” Reed said. “I don’t know if I can do this kind of film again.”

Django Unchained actress held after being mistaken for prostitute Daniele Watts, a US-African actress who has starred in big Hollywood film Django Unchained, has claimed she was “handcuffed and detained” by Los Angeles police officers after being mistaken for a prostitute. Two officers approached Watts and her white husband Brian James Lucas when they were seen showing affection in

public, the actress said in a Facebook post. She claims she refused to produce her photo ID when asked by police, and was then handcuffed and held in a police car as the officers tried to figure out who she was. She reportedly cut her wrist as she was handled roughly by the LAPD officers. “As I was sitting in the back of

the police car, I remembered the countless times my father came home frustrated or humiliated by the cops when he had done nothing wrong, “ she wrote in the post. “I felt his shame, his anger, and my own feelings of frustration for existing in a world where I have allowed myself to believe that “authority figures” could

control my BEING… my ability to BE!!!!!!! She continued: “Those cops could not stop me from expressing myself. They could not stop the cathartic tears and rage from flowing out of me. They could not force me to feel bad about myself. Yes, they had control over my physical body, but not my emotions.

Humans ‘to evolve into a new species by 2050’

his superior

Scientists predict that by 2050, human beings will have evolved into a completely new species that will live longer have children in old age and rely on smart technology to do everyday tasks. Researchers at the Global Brain Institute in Belgium, say that by 2050, a completely new type of human will evolve as a result of new technology, behaviour, and natural selection. Mr Cadell Last, a researcher at the Institute, claims mankind is undergoing a major ‘evolutionary transition’. This shift is so significant that Mr Last compares it to the change from monkeys to apes, and apes to humans. “Your 80 or 100 is going to be so radically different than your grandparents,” Mr Last says. Some evolutionary scientists believe this age could be as high as 120 by 2050. Mr Last claims humans will also demonstrate delayed sexual maturation, based on a report by scholar, Christina Sterbenz for the Business Insider.

An Administration Police officer committed suicide after shooting his superior in an attack at the Ifo refugee camp in Dadaab. Police say they are yet to know the motive of the shooting. The AP is said to have first shot and seriously wounded his seniorsenior sergeant- in the shoulder after an argument before shooting himself in the head. His colleagues rushed to the scene of the shooting only to find his body next to the gun and injured officer to hospital.

Ruto: Arrest parents who don’t take children to school

Deputy president William Ruto has directed the provincial administration and police to arrest and prosecute parents who do not take their children to school. Ruto issued the directive over the high number of pupils abandoning school in different parts of the country despite the Government’s commitment to free primary and affordable secondary education. “Statistics in this Isiolo county show that there are 25,000 pupils down from 35,000 in primary schools and 2,200 pupils down from 3,200 in secondary schools in the last five years. This is a crisis that must be addressed,” said Ruto. Outlining the importance of education in providing equal opportunities, the Deputy President said the greatest empowerment any generation could give to its people was the empowerment of knowledge through education. “We have increased free primary education funds from Sh10 billion to Sh 14 billion this year. This is not enough. We have also increased the secondary schools money from Sh18 billion to 28 billion. But who will benefit from these funds if your children are not in schools?” He said another Sh4 billion has been set aside for the administration of examination this financial year.

Uganda on high alert as security forces arrest 12 terror suspects Police in Ugandan are on high alert after arresting 19 terror suspects and recovering explosives in an operation over the weekend to foil an “imminent” terrorist attack on the city of Kampala. Intelligence reports pre-empted an attack by Somalia-based Al-shabaab insurgents in which they wanted to stage attacks

in retaliation of the killing on their commander two weeks ago. Ugandan troops are among Amisom fighters in Somalia and it is believed that they provided the intelligence which enabled the US to kill Ahmed Godane in airstrikes. Ugandan security forces have since ratcheted up security in all public places, vowing to

“effectively defeat whoever tried to endanger the lives and property of the people of Uganda”. The US Embassy in Uganda said the foiled terror plot was by the Somalia-based militant group although it did not specify the targets. However, local police said that based on the type of explosives

seized, they saw this attack plot as a possible repeat of last September’s attack on Nairobi’s Westgate Mall and were particularly concerned about crowded areas. Security forces were still searching for more suspects and have declined to release more details about those arrested.

Githurai mayhem rages over detained policeman Githurai protesters blocked the Thika Superhighway for the third day today as they pressed on with demands that a police officer accused of killing be released. Motorists were forced to alternative routes as protesters made good their threat to continue with demonstrations until Constable Titus Musila, who was arrested two weeks ago, is released. The demonstrations occurred despite police warnings that the residents should desist from blocking the busy highway and await the law to take its course. Riot police were on standby to quell protests by the residents early today. The officers said they had been informed that the residents would hold a protest along the highway and march to the Director of Public Prosecution’s

office to push for the officer’s release. The residents were joined by matatu operators who blocked the road at Githurai underpass for two consecutive days last week to demand for Musila’s release. The officer is popularly known in Githurai as Katitu. Police lobbed tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd that pelted vehicles with stones and burned tyres in the demo. The protesters say the detained officer has helped reduce crime in Githurai 45, Zimmerman and Githurai Kimbo. Katitu was on Friday last week charged with the killing of a man who was gunned down in 2013. He is also being investigated by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) over the killing of a key suspect in the case.

Motorists diverted for Outer Ring road upgrade Motorists using the Outer Ring Road will have to divert to new routes after the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) released a deviation plan to allow for the upgrade of the busy route into a four-lane carriageway. A Canadian firm, Lea International, has been picked to oversee the project that is set to start next month and take three years. And as is the case during such projects, nearby roads are expected to shoulder the burden of more traffic to allow for the construction. “During the construction, deviation roads of about 12 km will be upgraded for use by the public,” Kura said in a press statement.

Outer Ring Road is a 13-km stretch from GSU Headquarters along Thika Superhighway to end at Taj Mall in Embakasi. The authority says the road linking Mathare North and Juja Road, the Mutarakwa Komarock road, the Eastern Bypass to Outer Ring Road will be used for traffic deviation. Part of the traffic will also be directed to the road linking Embakasi Barracks and Kangundo road. The African Development Bank, which is funding the project, said Lea International will supervise construction. The road was last month listed as bearing the worst traffic snarl-ups in Nairobi.

President signs Finance Bill 2014, Victims Protection Act President Uhuru Kenyatta has approved the Finance Bill 2014 which was passed by Parliament last month. The President also signed into law The Victim Protection Act of 2014 that gives effect to Article 50(9) of the Constitution. The two Bills were presented to the President for his signature at State House, Nairobi, by the Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi and Clerk of the National Assembly Justin Bundi. The Finance Act 2014, which amends sections of the law relating to tax and their applications, covers Income Tax, Value Added Tax, Customs and Excise and Taxation of Extractive Industries. The Victim Protection Act 2104 caters for the protection of victims of crime and abuse of power. It provides victims with better information and support services. The law also provides for reparation and compensation to victims and special protection for vulnerable groups.

High cost of living expected to fall after diesel price slash The high cost of living among Kenyans is set to drop after the significant reduction of the cost of fuel. The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) cut the cost of diesel by Sh0.62 per litre to Sh102.36. Diesel is largely used in the generation of electricity and the reduced cost may in turn led to lower cost of power, which manufacturers always claim increases the production costs of goods and services. High prices of basic goods such a flour, cooking oil, among other household essentials, are likely to stabilise or be sliced. The cost of fresh farm produce for urban residents will also drop significantly because large-scale farmers will spend less in production and transportation. Many Kenyans in urban informal settlements and rural areas rely on kerosene for lighting and cooking. They got a reprieve after the cost of kerosene was sliced by Sh1.42 per litre to Sh82.79. Petrol users were the biggest gainers after ERC cut its price by Sh4.98

a litre to Sh111.64 in Nairobi. Prices of diesel fell by 0.62 cents from 102.98 to 102.36 in Nairobi, 99.64 to 99.03 in Mombasa, 103.84 to 103.22 in Nakuru, 104.98 to 104.37

in Eldoret and 105.05 to 104.43 in Kisumu. The regulator attributed the drop to fall in cost of importation of crude oil. Kenya has been struggling to

keep inflation rate at between 3.5 and 7.5 per cent. Last month, the rate stood at 8.36 per cent. The fuel cost drop, therefore, gives policy makers easy time to meet the target.

Anti-ISIL coalition builds as 40 countries sign up Forty countries including several Arab nations have agreed to conduct airstrikes against militants in Iraq alongside the efforts of the United States, US officials announced yesterday. The announcement was made in Paris ahead of an international conference today where more discussion on a coalition is expected. US Secretary of State John Kerry who made the revelation said the Middle East are willing to help with strikes against ISIS, but he warned

that “it’s not appropriate to start announcing” which nations will participate and what each will do. Kerry’s statements come just as ISIS beheaded a third Western captive, Briton David Haines, and as Kerry ends a weeklong trip to the Middle East to drum up support for the battle against the militants. “A lot of this is still in the discussion phase, but I want to be clear that there have been offers, both to CENTCOM and to the Iraqis, of Arab countries taking more aggres-

sive kinetic action against ISIL,” he said. British Prime Minister David Cameron has condemned the “despicable” killing by the extremists and vowed to do everything possible to hunt down the killers and bring them to justice. “Step by step we will drive back, dismantle and ultimately destroy ISIL and what it stands for. We will do so in a calm, deliberate way but with an iron determination,” Cameron said in a televised statement. It is thought that the killer Islamist

could be a British national who has since joined the ranks of the extremists. Cameron, who led an emergency government meeting Sunday to discuss the killing, said the country was “sickened” that a Briton could have done this to a fellow Briton. Islamic State militants on Saturday released a video showing Haines being executed in the same grisly manner as two US journalists in recent weeks, along with a threat to kill another British hostage, Alan Henning.

Brain checks progress of Alzheimer’s The human brain may be able to compensate for some of the early changes seen in Alzheimer’s , a new study shows. The study suggests some people recruit extra nerve power to help maintain their ability to think. Scientists hope the findings could shed light on why only some people with early signs of the condition go on to develop severe memory decline. But experts warn more research is needed to understand these processes. “It’s possible that people who spend a lifetime involved in cognitively stimulating activity have brains that are better able to adapt to potential damage” Dr William Jagust.

A man is being accused of killing his exgirlfriend’s dog, Bear, and then serving it to her as a meal after the pet disappeared following an argument between them. Reports say Ryan Watenpaugh and his ex made up after their dispute, and she was served a meal that appeared to be pork, but then received a text message the next day from him asking how her dog tasted “and

referenced the meal he had cooked for her,” police said. A pair of severed dog’s paws was later left on her doorstep. Police are testing the remains. Though Watenpaugh admitted to leaving the paws on the woman’s doorstep, he denied murdering and cooking the dog. He’s been charged with animal cruelty and stalking.

Small investors get no-interest loans from Islamic banks MONday, SEPTEmber 15, 2014

As individuals and small business owners seek the best loan products, Islamic banking continue to enjoy growing popularity. Because many of the new Islamic banking products are open to nonIslamic customers, uptake of loans is expected to rise. Major banks have introduced the Sharia compliant financial products, interest-free loans based on the principles of Islamic Banking. The banks are open to the public regardless of race or religion. Although they cannot charge interest, the banks can profit from helping customers to buy properties using an ‘ijara’ or ‘murabaha’ scheme.

With the ijara scheme, the bank draws income by charging customers rent. A murabaha scheme involves the bank supplying goods for resale to customers at a higher price. It allows borrowers to repay in instalments which may be used to provide a loan on a property. Experts, such as Islamic scholar, Dr Hassan Anandwa, say Islamic finance is a viable solution to get rid of the weaknesses of conventional banking. Zainabu Ali Hussein, a smallscale trader in Nakuru, says many entrepreneurs have had their properties auctioned, not because of failure to rep ay loans but due to high interest rates charged by conventional banks. In the last five years, the country

licensed two fully Islamic commercial banks and one fully Islamic insurance company, Takaful Insurance of Africa. “Sharia compliant banks are cheaper sources of finance and have no hidden charges. The cost of borrowing is agreed with the customer in advance,” former Nakuru branch manager of First Community Bank, Yusuf Ngunyi, says. He says instalments remain fixed for the entire life of a loan, making them cheaper and more effective sources of finance. The banks use a profit sharing concept instead of charging interest. The banks do not allow investments in gambling, alcohol, tobacco and pornography.

Educated Kenyans earn 1,000 times more than primary level drop-outs

Formally-educated Kenyans make more money than the less scholarly counterparts. A group of researchers from Egerton University has discovered that among the richest Kenyans who went to college, there are those who make nearly Sh2.2 million a month, over 1,800 times what poor uneducated breadwinners earn. Paul Gamba and a team of scholars from one of Egerton’s research departments, has found that some of the richest educated Kenyans make Sh2,184,000 a month. Meanwhile, the research shows that those with little or no education make as little as Sh1,200 a month. From the study, the average monthly income for individuals in Nairobi is Sh29,223. “There was wide dispersion around this mean with household incomes ranging from Sh1,200 to Sh2,184,000 per month,” said Gamba’s colleagues. growing popularity: A woman holds up an Islamic Banking debit card. Loan products from the bank continue to enjoy growing popularity after the institution opened the benefits to non-Islamic customers.

EU sanctions on Russia take effect The new European Union (EU) sanctions against Russia have taken effect. The sanctions will block loans for five large state banks which are barred from loans with a maturity longer than one month. The institutions will also be locked out of other financial services in the EU.

Oil business will also be curbed with the three major Russian oil firms, Rosneft, Transneft and Gazprom Neft, being targets. Their access to financial markets will be restricted, a move that could heavily affect Rosneft which last month asked the Russian government for a $42bn

(Sh3.7 trillion) loan. The sanctions are aimed at heaping pressure on Russia over its role in the Ukraine crisis. But the measures could be eased or lifted if a ceasefire in Ukraine holds. Russia says it is preparing a response. There are reports that cars imported from EU could be targeted and European planes may

be banned from flying over Russian territory. But some big economic sectors are unaffected by the sanctions, such as Russian gas exports, space industry and nuclear energy. Many EU countries rely heavily on Russian deliveries of gas and nuclear technology.

“In Nairobi, Sh6,000 per month is the most commonly occurring household income and half of households earn either more or less than Sh11,500 per month,” said the researchers. More educated households tend to have higher incomes. Among the poorest households, about 93 per cent of breadwinners have a secondary education or less. Among the wealthiest households, 76 per cent of heads have either college or university education. A similar pattern emerges among spouses of the breadwinners. In the poorest households, 46 per cent of spouses have primary education or less, a figure that falls to 6 per cent among the wealthiest group. “Clearly education levels affect income,” says Gamba.

Narok farmers’ fortune from garlic, courgette A Narok farmer is making Sh400, 000 a month growing garlic and courgettes, long, green plants of the cucumber family. In 2009, Kuseyo ole Sasai, former director of the Kenya Dairy Goats Association, was not a professional farmer. Then, he tried his hand at greenhouse farming, a move that cost him thousands of shillings in losses due to his lack of know-how and Narok’s harsh semi-arid environment. In his first try at farming, Mr Sasai planted tomatoes

in a greenhouse on leased land in Narok County with Sh120,000 from his savings. Two years later, he realised that he was making losses mainly because that part of Narok was dry most of the year and his crops demanded large amounts of water. “Transporting water to the greenhouse was costly,” says Mr Sasai, who spent most of his income irrigating the land. He said he abandoned the greenhouse project and embarked on planting garlic and courgettes, which require less water than

tomtatoes. He also started keeping dairy cows. The farm is divided into four main parts with 20 acres under garlic and courgette plants while another section is reserved for dairy farming and another is set aside for his house. Mr Sasai soon broke even. He said milk earns him about Sh300,000 per month while garlic and courgettes fetch over Sh100,000. Mr Sasai sells his milk to nearby schools and shopping centres while his garlic and courgettes go to local markets.

WEDDINGS

MONDAY, septeMber 15, 2014

Florence’s wedding Stephen Oduor and Florence Oyolla exchanged their marriage vows in August 30 at Queen of Apostles, Thika Road. Florence and Steve held their reception at the KISE grounds in Kasarani. She attributes the success of her wedding to Steve, her family and friends. The couple met seven years

ago and have lived on strongly despite the challenges that came their way. “My hubby is so loving, caring and the most handsome man in the world. If am asked to get married again he would still be the one,” Florence beams joyfully. Florence also intimates that she and Steve share so much that it keeps tightening their bond by day.

Save-the-date cards not wedding invitations

Men always want to feel that they made the decision and they were not forced into it

The oddity of the woman proposing Men proposing to women is the norm. However, when a girl proposes, that is news. It has always been the man proposing to the girl. Times are changing and there are now a few women bold enough to ask men to marry them. There is no written rule against woman proposing but society has always assigned this task to man. Women shy

away from proposing to their men because they want the reassurance that he wanted to marry her and that she did not force him into marriage. There are, however, times when a woman will force a man to propose through threats and pregnancies. ‘’I will never ask a man to marry me. I want him to ask me. It is an honour if somebody asks you,’’ says Catherine

Gakenia A 2012 study by psychology students at the University of California found that both men a women were against women proposing. Men always want to feel that they made the decision and they were not forced into it. So ,they may not necessarily say yes when their woman asks for their hand in marriage literally. So would you let your woman propose?

Once the wedding date has been set, the wedding couple can consider sending the save-the-date cards. These are not wedding invitation cards. Invitations contain the RSVP, requests the guests to confirm whether they will attend the wedding or not. They are usually sent six months before the wedding day. On the other hand, save-thedate cards are for letting the guests know in advance that there is a wedding scheduled on the date indicated, and that the couple would

like them to put it in their future plans. They are usually sent as early as one year before the wedding day. Save-thedates share more than just the date, they set the wedding couple in planning mode. They help them know how much they will need to spend on the tables, reception and other elements far in advance, which means less stress in the long run. They also get the guests amped up for the big day. They start thinking of the gifts they plan to get, which is good on both sides.

True love overcomes religious differences Religious differences are often given unwarranted prominence in relationships. People have missed out on true love after their religious scales fail to balance “For centuries we have made interfaith dating look like a taboo,” says Mark Mutai. “I would not walk away from someone I love because of our incompatible faith,” he says. A Christian can find himself in the arms of a Muslim because the heart does not choose who to fall for. Trouble only comes when you are under pressure to convert to your lover’s religion. The transformation should be a personal choice.

touchspot

One should not convert because of a partner’s desire; it is a step that should be taken not to please the other party. Think of yourself too. But if the two agree to lead separate religious paths, do not push beliefs onto the other party. Instead of making your beliefs look superior, steer away from such talk. Instead, use each minute to strengthen the relationship. “It could be challenging, but I would try if I love someone,” says Maureen Muiya. Focus on the bigger picture, that is, a loving and meaningful relationship. Love your partner for who they are and learn from your differences. Since only the two of you own the relationship, no external force should discourage you.

NO BOUNDARIES: Sarika and Timothy Khamala, A Christian can find himself in the arms of a Muslim because the heart does not choose who to fall for.

I liked him and thought he was into me too, I was wrong! I met this guy whom I liked and I think he was into me too. But I didn’t know he had a girlfriend. He asked me out often but it never occurred to me that he could be the type of person to cheat. He was such a gentleman. My heart sunk when I found out he had another chic. Because of pride, I do not play second fiddle, so I gave him an ultimatum to make a choice. He couldn’t, and was still attached

to the other girl he had dated for three years. Rather than fool myself, I walked away. Recently, he came back begging for another chance. He broke up with his girlfriend four months ago. I lost trust in him and question every word he says. Much as I want to give in, I’m also scared that it might not work. If you were in my shoes, what would you do?

Reply: Before you flatter yourself because he came back for you, grill and watch him to be certain he is honest this time. He could be the type of guy who just can’t stay without a woman or he may be genuine. Life is about risking. So, in case you let him in, be careful. As for trust, he has to earn it. Remember he was with the ex for more than three years, so she may

not be totally out of his system. Don’t rush into anything lest you become his rebound chic. You can start all over again as friends. If he really wants you back he must be patient. A step at a time will let things freely fall into place. But if you do not want him, don’t lead him on. When all is said and done, the ultimate decision lies with you. — CM

Should your partner go everywhere with you? Relationships are exciting. They also have a tendency to consume everything we do. People in a relationship are always talking about the other half or starting every conversation with ‘John and Me’ or ‘Mary and Me’. When a relationship is new, couples cannot have enough of each other’s company. They want to spend every waking hour with the other half. But with growing demands of life, it is not always the case. There are jobs, friends and family to keep or take care of. There are those who would rather be with partners everywhere. Yet others would rather just have a little time to themselves. “I cannot go everywhere with my boyfriend… I need my space and I also have other friends to hang out with,’’ says Hellen Kimani. ‘’Plus if I spend too much time with him, we might get bored and lose interest in each other,’’ says Kimani. “I cannot be spending time with her every day; I have work and friends too.

From five pupils to a university The universe is the limit. That was the flame that blazed in the heart of Dr Eddah Gachukia when she established a primary school with five students-three in Class One and two in Class Two in 1974. Dr Gachukia has since grown her thin Riara Group of Schools to an academic empire that is shaping the future of youth in Kenya in her more than half a century career. She owns a prestigious university along side her husband Daniel Gachukia. After passing well in mathematics and sciences from Alliance High School, she proceeded to Makerere University College for a diploma. She was later posted to Thika High as a teacher, where she served for three years before flying to Leeds University, UK. At Leeds, she took

studies curriculum research and development in Sweden before joining KIE on return. Among the changes she oversaw in the education system is the introduction of Kiswahili and mother tongue languages to ease learning for pupils because of the low penetration of English after independence. She studied for a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a doctorate (PhD) in 1971 and 1973 respectively. Gachuki also added a doctorate in Literature to her cap in 1981 from the University of Nairobi where she taught after her PhD until 1987. The academician worked as an advisor to UNESCO on population information development from 1987-90. She has been a proponent of the girl child education in all her

career and was a mong the founders of the Forum for African Women Educationist (FAWE). In 1975, Senegalese President Abdou Diouf honoured Gachuki for her role in women education in Africa. Her role in education in Kenya was also recognised by the International Committee of Fellowship of the Least Coin in 2009.

True love overcomes trials, tribulations True love remains steadfast and bright even in darkness. The powers of darkness cannot dim its brightness even in cloudy conditions. Future, Miley Cyrus & Mr. Hudson say in their song Real And True, their love will stand all testing moments because it is actual. They both promise to hold onto each other. Neither the death of the sun, nor the

paleness of the stars will mar their love. Absence of the sun or stars does not make their love hidden, it remains visible and live. The night might look distant and deep but the strength of their love will still hold them together. Their journey has not been smooth but because they have been there for one another, they have pulled through the

trying moments and this spirit will see them succeed. Humility has been part of them all along. It has glued them together. They say if it is love they are looking for, it is their partner. Faults have marked their journey. Forgiveness has helped them repair their relationship. They will still forgive one another if they fall again.

NIS boss must check Al Shabaab for tourism to recover The approval of Major General Philip Kameru to head the National Intelligence Service rekindles dead economic spirits among Kenyans (Fresh hope in new spy boss, September 12, 2014).

He should tame the Al-Shabaab criminals, who have turned Kenya into a playing ground for terrorists since Kenya’s incursion into Somalia. Many Kenyans have died as a huge labour force is extinguished

by the criminals. Investors have shunned terror hotspots such as Mombasa and Nairobi. This has forced the economy into unnecessary bleeding and Kameru must define Kenya as a haven of peace, not insecurity.

Baldev Chager defends KCB Safari Rally title

Baldev Chager successfully defended the 62nd edition of the KCB Safari Rally title on Sunday at Batian View in Nanyuki. Chager, who took 2:47.13 to pick a second career Safari win, was pushed to the wire by rival Carl ‘Flash’ Tundo who came in second a minute later in a Proton S2000. Manvir Baryan sealed the podium dash after trailing Chager by 4.53 minutes. “We knew Loldaiga was going to be a technical stage. We had a two minute cushion over Tundo and we

knew he was going to push very hard. “Tundo picked over a minute on us which was good because we beat him in wheat lands and Kisima ..... he beat us by six seconds and we again beat him by a second in the section. But at the end of the day, we still won so I’m happy but Tundo has been hot on our heels,” Chager said. After big guns including Ian Duncan, Rajbir Rai, Issa Amwari and Onkar Rai retired on the second day of the competition, the chase

for the title turned into a two-horse race. Tundo, the 2012 champion, set the quickest times on the repeat run of the long Loldaiga stage where he beat Chager by over a minute. But the champion checked into the ast service at Batian view to savour a second straight Safari crown. The biggest loser was ARC leader Ivorian Gary Chaynes who failed to seal the continental title after he retired with mechanical complications on the notorious Loldaiga hill.

Real stunned by Atletico sting Atletico Madrid gained some measure of revenge for their heart-breaking Champions League final loss to Real Madrid by beating the European champions 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday. A second consecutive La Liga fall for Real leaves them six points adrift of leaders Barcelona after just three games as they were 2-0 winners over Athletic Bilbao earlier in the day thanks to a double from Neymar. Atletico got off to the best possible start as Tiago headed home Koke’s corner, but Real were soon level as Cristiano Ronaldo won and then converted a penalty midway through the first-half. But with suspended coach Diego Simeone watching from the stands, Atletico grabbed all three points 13 minutes from time when Arda Turan swept home Juanfran?s low cross. “I think it is the first time we have won twice in a row in the league at the Bernabeu and that is very important for our fans and a new

group of players,” said Simeone. “We still have difficulties ahead to have the consistency we want, but with the work rate they showed and the play they showed in the second-half I am happy.” But Real coach Carlo Ancelotti was at a loss to explain why his side’s performance dipped so alarmingly in the second-half, just as it did in the 4-2 fall at Real Sociedad a fortnight ago. “It is a problem. We have to analyse it in the next few days and fix it quickly. “The first-half was good like at Anoeta and the second-half wasn’t. We played with intensity and aggression in the first-half which is what you have to do to beat Atletico, but we didn’t do that in the second-half.” The Turkish international made amends just two minutes later though as he swept the ball into the far corner at the end of a lovely move involving Griezmann, Juanfran and Raul Garcia.

Tololwa’s late strike denies Gor Substitute Andrew Tololwa struck late for Tusker to deny new Gor Mahia coach Frank Nuttall a dream Kenya Premier League (KPL) debut as the champions shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Kasarani yesterday. Dan Sserunkuma put Gor ahead at the hour mark from the spot with his 10th goal of the season before Tololwa tapped home a rebound to restored parity six minutes from full time after Jerim Onyango failed to hold onto his shot. In another encounter at Machakos’ Kenyatta Stadium, Robinson Mwangi notched a brace as 10-man Mathare United beat KRA 2-0 to leapfrog Ulinzi Stars to seventh on the log on 32 points. At Awendo’s Green Stadium, substitute Crispine Odula snatched a point for Bandari with a last gasp goal as they forced hosts Sony Sugar to a 1-1 draw. On Saturday, AFC Leopards’ went down 1-2 to Western Stima in a League match played at refurbished Moi Stadium, Kisumu. Also on Saturday, Muhoroni Youth edged out Thika United 1-0 at Muhoroni grounds. Mike Khaduli converted the lone goal from the spot. The Tusker versus Gor match had a lot at stake with both sides aiming to take the initiative in the run in for the title by moving to the top of the log. However, after the draw, it is Sofapaka who will start the week at the summit on 43 points ahead of Gor on goal difference with Tusker two adrift in third. Gor coach Nuttall said his side deserved maximum points especially after being the first to score on the day.

Birech, Ndiku end brilliant season with victories at Continental Cup

SERIAL WINNER: 5,000m Commonwealth Games and Africa champion Jairus Birech won the 3,000m Continental Cup gold.

Kenyan Jairus Birech finished off his stellar steeplechase season with his second victory in two months at Marakech’s Grande Stadium, where he won at the African Championships gold last month. This time he was leading the Africa team to the top finish in the Continental Cup. Caleb Ndiku also wrapped his fine season with the 3000m gold, the first win ever for team Africa, who finished third overall behind winners team Europe and the Americas at the two-day compe-

tition. American Evan Jager led his African rival coming into the final straight in 8:13.18 , but the North American record holder was chased down by Birech who won in 8:13.18 to relegate Jager (8:14.08) to second. Qatar’s Abubaker Ali Kamal was third for Asia Pacific in 8:17.27. Birech has been in brilliant form of late, moving to 10th on the all-time list in Brussels with a time that put him in the exclusive sub-eight minute club. Nothing

so swift was needed however, as the 21-year-old notched up his ninth win of the year and Africa’s eighth in this event. Jager took the lead with three and a half to go before Kamal took it on, Birech briefly drifting back to fourth before forging ahead again with two laps left. “This was a tactical race, I had to use a plan B in order to kill Jager. I am satisfied with my performance today and I plan to maintain my pace,” said Birech the silver winner in Glasgow.

Mayweather prevails in another 12-rounder against Maidana to remain champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. refused to allow Marcos Maidana to turn their rematch into a brawl, boxing masterfully to win a 12-round unanimous decision Saturday night in their welterweight title fight. Mayweather remained

unbeaten in 47 pro fights, drawing upon his 18 years of experience and frustrating Maidana the entire night. The fight was a marked contrast to their first bout in May, when Maidana roughed Mayweather up in a close fight.

Two ringside judges scored it 116-111 for Mayweather, while the third had it 115112. The Associated Press had it 117-110. ”I felt sharper in the first fight, my rhythm was off,” Mayweather said. ”I got hit

with some shots tonight I shouldn’t have gotten hit with. But that comes with the sport.” The fight was held up momentarily in the eighth round when Mayweather said that Maidana bit him on the wrist

while the two were tied up. Maidana was penalized for tripping Mayweather in the 10th round. Mayweather complained long after the first fight in May that Maidana was a dirty fighter, and complained even more

when Maidana seemed to try to hit him below the belt in a clinch in the eighth round, then apparently tried to bite him. Mayweather immediately jumped back and gestured to referee Kenny Bayless that Maidana bit him on the wrist.

IT’S OURS: Devin Shretta, Mike du Toit, Jonathan Stichbury and Buster Mckenzie savour the cup glory.

Massive pay off for former Ferrari boss Ferrari announced the departure of president Luca di Montezemolo, marking the end of a glorious but fading era. In two spells, Di Montezemolo won 19 world titles, the last of them the constructors’ championship in 2008. But the wait for fresh glory — and the politics of Ferrari — cost him the job he carried off with conspicuous urbanity for 23 years. The 67-year-old will officially leave with an eye-watering Sh3.36billion pay-off on October 13 to be replaced by Fiat chief executive

Sergio Marchionne. Sergio seems to have forced Di Montezemolo’s exit after disagreements over the direction of the business. While the Ferrari road car is delivering record profits, the Formula One team needs precisely the kind of major surgery Di Montezemolo specialised in. For too long, Fernando Alonso’s consistent and fabulous driving has masked the essential limitations of their cars. This year’s engine is deficient in comparison with their Mercedes rivals. That was especially

disappointing because the major change to hybrid power offered them chance to turn the corner. Poor results have led to an exodus from the team. Stefano Domenicali left as principal in April with a mixed record after leading Ferrari to the last of Di Montezemolo’s titles. But as Di Montezemolo noted as way back as 1992, Ferrari carries with it “the burden of false assumption, a public belief that we should win because we have so much money.”

Sh3.36b richer: Luca di Montezemolo will receive Sh3.36b send-off package when he leaves Ferari in October. Fiat chief executive Sergio Marchionne seems to have forced Di Montezemolo’s exit.

Origi on target for victors Lille Lille continued their unbeaten start to the Ligue 1 season on Sunday as Divock Origi (pictured) scored one and set up another in a 2-0 win over Nantes. Victory moved them to top of the table. After a goalless first half in which Jordan Veretout hit the post for Nantes, Origi opened the scores within a minute of the restart after he nodded home a cross from Florent Balmont. Three minutes later, the Belgian international, who was bought by Liverpool in the summer before being loaned back to LOSC, provided the pass for Rony Lopes to apply the finish. It was a first goal for the Portuguese midfielder since he moved to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on loan from Manchester City in the summer transfer window. Rene Girard’s side, who will face the Russians of FC Krasnodar in the Europa League on Thursday, are a point clear of Bordeaux and Saint-Etienne at the Ligue 1 summit. Champions Paris Saint-

Germain are a further point adrift in fourth position. A draw will be enough for Bordeaux to reclaim top place when they travel to Guingamp on Sunday afternoon before Marseille visit Evian in the day’s late kick-off. Saint-Etienne beat Caen 1-0 on Saturday while champions Paris Saint-Germain drew 1-1 at Rennes, despite Zoumana Camara giving them a first-half lead.

Kenya crush Tanzania to win Africa Cricket cup

Kenya cricket team crushed Tanzania by nine wickets to win the Africa Cricket Cup in South Africa. Spinner James Ngoche set up the tone after bowling a career best 4 for 2 as opener

Alex Obanda finished the job with an unbeaten half ton. With the win, Kenya finished top of the six-team event with three wins, one tie and a loss to crown their victory. Ngoche and his brother

Nehemiah Odhiambo shared seven wickets between them as Tanzania failed to recover from 26 for 0 to end up with 91 all out after 27.3 overs. Kenya reached the target in 10.2 overs, with Obanda

scoring 72 from 43 balls. Obanda put on a an unbeaten second wicket stand of 73 with Gurdeep Singh after Dhiren Gondaria was run out in the fourth over on 3 from 4 balls. Singh finished on 17

off 18 balls. “It was a very tough day,” Tanzania captain Hamisi Abdalla said. “Kenya has out skilled us, bowled better, batted better and fielded better.” Delighted Kenya captain

Rakep Patel said his side had played a “perfect game again”, with Obanda and James putting some good skills with the bat and the ball. “We’re getting better and that’s very important,” Patel said.
