A mobile money transfer agent in Kangemi, Nairobi, had such a bad day at work last week he wishes he could simply forget. He lost Sh24, 000 to a fraudster. Simon Makali says he was caught off guard by the conman. “A well-dressed man walked in my shop and asked to withdraw

From Page 1 I asked him how much to which he replied Sh1,000 and proceeded to withdraw.” A minute later, the man told Makali he had sent the money to the wrong agent. “I looked at the message he had received and it had the name of another agent’s shop, so I proceeded to call the customer care service so that they could reverse the transaction,” he says. Since it is not the first time for such transactions to go to the wrong number, it took time before getting through to the customer care service.
The man was getting impatient as he claimed he needed to get the cash to a hospital where his wife was in critical condition. Makali told him it may take up to 10 minutes to solve the hiccup and volunteered a solution. “He gave me his mobile phone, showed me a number, which he said was the customer care centre number and asked me to dial,” says Makali. “Everybody knows the customer care service number has many zeroes and so did that one. That is what convinced me it might be the real one. “I called the number and a lady answered. I told her the problem
and she gave me some instructions on how to reverse the transaction which I followed. Then I received a message telling me I had sent Sh24, 000 to someone else.” When Makali looked up, the man was nowhere. He tried to call back the number but it was switched off and when he finally got hold of the customer care service, they told him the money had already been withdrawn and they could not reverse the transaction. “I tried to explain to them the situation and they told me that they do not have another customer care service number, the one they use to call clients is one way; meaning
only they can call clients, their clients cannot call them.” But Simon Makali is not the only one who has fallen prey to conmen. Lucy Nyachae too has been a victim. “I was left in debt. I had to borrow money from friends and relatives to compensate it before my boss found out.” Nyachae was conned out of Sh85, 000 by the trickster. He reported to her shop and asked to withdraw some cash, he then said he had sent to the wrong agent. “He told me it will take long before we get in touch with customer care service so it would be best if we call
them directly,” she says. “He gave me the number and Sh200 for use to call them saying it was likely to be a long conversation. “I made the call and a lady gave me instructions which I followed. I got a a message informing that I had sent Sh85, 000 to an unfamiliar number. When I looked up, the man was gone.” The customer care service later told her they could not reverse the transaction as the money had been withdrawn and the number switched off. They assured her if money was ever deposited in the number, they would send it to her immediately as compensation.
Waitress fumes at Mayweather after missing Sh2m drink tip A waitress in Las Vegas is angry at five-division world champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather for not tipping her after she served him and friends with drinks and chicken wings worth $25,000 (Sh2.3million). Nik Nguyen, reports TMZ, thought she had hit the jackpot when Floyd, who had won $32m (Sh2.9billion) in his Saturday win over Marcos Maidana, walked into the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Sunday afternoon with a group of almost 150 people and proceeded to order expensive drinks and food. Nguyen said she went the extra mile to provide Mayweather and company with “excellent service”, but he left without leaving her as much as a cent. She says it’s especially “maddening” because some of the people in Floyd’s entourage, including actor Jamie Fox, were throwing cash to girls who danced on stage. Nguyen, who has been struggling with two jobs and a recent death of her father, says she didn’t walk away empty-handed though. Security guards felt so sorry for her and gave her a few dollars from the commissions they earned from the dancers.

12 Nigerian soldiers to hang for plotting mutiny
Twelve soldiers have been sentenced to death in Nigeria after they were found guilty of conspiracy to commit a mutiny. The Military Court Martial in Abuja this morning ruled that the 12, who were among 18 charged with mutiny on May 13 and 14, 2014 at the Maimalari Cantonment, were also guilty of
charges of disobeying lawful orders and other acts said to be against military service. The nine-member military court martial also found the soldiers guilty of insubordinate behaviour, use of abusive language, making false accusations against superiors, among others. They were also convicted of
attempting to kill erstwhile General Officer Commanding 7 Division, Major General Ahmed Mohammed, by shooting at his official car between May 13 and 14, 2014. The car is bullet proof. The court also found the 12 guilty of preventing the movement of some of their injured colleagues to hospital and obstructing
evacuation of those killed in an ambush on their way from an operation against Boko Haram in Chibok, Borno State. The incident took place at the Maimalari Barracks, Maiduguri. Jasper Braidolor, David Musa, Friday Onu, Yusuf Shuaibu, Emmanuel Igomu, Andrew Ngbede, Nurudeen Ahmed,
Ifeanyi Alukhagbe, Alao Samuel, Amadi Chukwudi, Alan Linus and Stephen Clement will therefore face the hangman’s noose. Jeremiah Ichocho, who was found guilty of a charge of absence without official leave, will serve two years without labour as another five were acquitted after they were found not guilty by the court.

Men and women are keeping more handbags One in 10 women admits to owning 15 or more handbags, having spent as much as Sh5,630 on a single one, claims a global survey. Analysts for information resource site, Bespoke Offers have found that it is not only women who are guilty of hoarding accessories as men now own an average of three ‘man bags’ as the need to carry supplies and accessories continues to hound them. In a world where new technology demands access to devices like laptops, tablets, accessories and chargers for these items, the need for a bag is quite evident. Nearly half of the women surveyed have a collection of at least seven handbags. Almost half of them said they mainly bought handbags for ‘special occasions’, but just over a quarter admitted they were more likely to be an impulse buy. Despite the range of bags that they own, almost half admitted sticking to their favourite bag and use only one in a week. Asked about the main motivations for purchasing a bag, respondents said that the storage and size of the bag were the main factors.
Police are holding three guards following a raid at the Nairobi home of televangelist Nelson Wairimu last night in which valuables were stolen. The guards are under interrogation over the attack and police say no injury was reported.
Rusinga School asks court to dismiss dreadlocks case The Rusinga School now wants a dreadlocks case against it dismissed saying it has a grooming policy which all parents are required to subscribe to when their children are admitted. The school, which has been sued by a parent, Jacklyne Kabugo, for refusing to admit her child, Cungu Kamau, for having deadlocks, insists that it has rules and regulations on grooming. Principal of Rusinga Preparatory School, Nelly Omino says different rules apply for female and male students with respect to hairstyles which does not amount to discrimination. In response to the parent’s suit, Omino opposes the petition on grounds that it does not disclose any actual and or apprehended violation of any fundamental freedom and asks the court to dismiss it. She states “the promulgation of different rules for male and female students by a private school with respect to hairstyles and length does not amount to discrimination on account of gender as alleged by the petitioner.” The principal said the rules and regulations are in accordance with the school’s philosophy and students have the responsibility to adhere to them with parents expected to support them. Rusinga School Ltd, Omino explains, was founded in 1975 by expatriates and Christians of over 40 nationalities are represented.

Muslim leaders are now demanding that President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto make known their positions on police actions, which they say are responsible for killings and disappearances of youth in the Coast region. Chairman of the National Muslim Leaders Forum, Abdullahi Abdi said their silence implies the President and the government support the police’s “policy of killing youths in the name of fighting insecurity and terrorism.
Muslim leaders rail against threats by police to close ‘radicalisation’ mosques Muslim leaders yesterday reacted angrily to threats by the government to close down certain mosques accused of radicalizing youths. Led by Mandera senator Billow Kerrow, the leaders said closing down mosques
will not help in fighting terror and asked the government to instead focus on individual threats. They said the move will curtail the freedom of Muslims to worship. “It is sad when senior security officials issue such blanket
threats against houses of worship in the name of fighting terrorism. If there are specific people who are committing criminal acts, they should be dealt with in line with the law,” said Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims deputy secretary
general, Hasan Nado. CID director Ndegwa Muhoro on Sunday said police would close down some mosques he claimed are preaching extremism and promoting terrorist ideologies. The threat followed a raid police
conducted on Sunday during which a man police described as “a wanted terrorist”, was shot dead in Mombasa. County Police commander, Robert Kitur told reporters yesterday that they have placed several mosques under surveillance over radical
activity. But he said their operations are targeting not just mosques but also other non-governmental organizations whose activities are being monitored closely. The Muslim leaders want President Uhuru Kenyatta to speak over the matter.

3,000 US troops to help Liberia tame Ebola virus US President Barack Obama is to announce plans to deploy 3,000 troops to Liberia to help fight the Ebola virus. The move comes hours after African presidents accused western powers of not doing enough to counter the epidemic. US officials say Obama will officially announce the plans today. Sources say US military will oversee building new treatment centres and help train medical staff to help scale down the impact of the worst ever Ebola outbreak. The call follows a string of criticism of the slow international response to the epidemic. Presidents, scholars, scientists and medical practitioners have accused western nations of not responding adequately to the epidemic that has so far killed more than 2400 people in West Africa. President Uhuru Kenyatta is
the latest to join the critics and have accused Western nations of slow response to affected countries in West Africa. He said the reaction is “not the kind of response we would have seen if this happened somewhere in Europe or America.” He made the remarks on Monday during the Unesco international award presentation in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. His Ghanaian counterpart John Dramani Mahama said more and faster external help was required to slow the spread of the disease. US officials say the aim of the anti-Ebola initiative is to train up to 500 healthcare staff and help in the construction of 17 heathcare facilities. Each centre will have about 100 beds which will enjoy a joint command based to co-ordinate between US and international relief efforts.
Medics warn sugar lovers of health risks Barely six months after the World Health Organisation (WHO) proposed cuts in daily sugar intake, experts are calling for an even lower intake to cut the risk of contracting diseases associated with blood sugar. WHO has recommended that sugar should account for five per cent of energy intake, down from 10 per cent. But studies published in the BMC Public Health Journal suggest that the target should be no more than three per cent. Researchers said the move was needed after weighing the costs in health and financial implications of tooth decay. Sugar has been identified as the most
important factor in the development of tooth decay and is a “largely preventable disease”. The study said an increase from near-zero sugar to five per cent of energy intake doubles the prevalence of decay in children. Treatment of dental problems costs between five and 10 per cent of total health expenditure in industrial countries, it says. Prof Philip James, a nutrition expert at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who is a past president of the World Obesity Federation, and co-authored the report said tough action is required.

Kenya listed in Hepatitis C medicine costs cut pact Kenya has been listed among the countries to be covered in an agreement aimed at slashing the cost of a Hepatitis C drug known as Sovaldi. The programme will cover 91 countries and involves seven Indian pharmaceutical companies. It will ensure the current price of Sh88, 964 per pill slashed, US firm Gilead Sciences says. “We will make the medicine available to millions around the world,” Greg Alton Gilead, Medical Affairs Executive Vice President, said. He said seven Indian firms to which it has licensed its Hepatitis C drug, include Cipla, Ranbaxy Laboratories, Cadila Healthcare and Mylan Laboratories. Hepatitis C patients require three or six months of treatment using the drug based on the strain of the virus. Alton said Hepatitis C is a major public health issue globally.
UK gives Kenya anti-terror bomb detectors, training kits for airports The UK government will continue supporting Kenya in her war on terrorists, High Commissioner Christian Turner has said. Turner said terrorism remains a global challenge that requires concerted efforts to eliminate. He said the UK government will continue enhancing the capacity of Kenya’s security personnel, especially those manning key installations, such as airports and border points. He was speaking when he handed over explosives detectors and training kits to the Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director Lucy Mbugua in a ceremony attended by Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau. “We are committed to strengthening Kenya’s capacity to counter terror threats through assistance on investigating and prosecuting detained terrorists in line with international human rights standards,” he said. He said the support will be extended to other sectors such as police reforms and
Kenya’s effort to restore sanity in the troubled Somalia. The envoy said “aviation security is another vital element in protecting all our citizens from acts of terrorism.” “Security is a priority for us all, so I am delighted that the UK government continues to work closely with KAA and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) to further strengthen existing aviation security regime in Kenya,” he said. The Improvised Explosive Device
kits were handed over to KAA as part of efforts to combat terrorism. The IED kits have been made by UK military experts and comprise ‘dummy devices’ that mirror recent threats against aviation around the world, including bombs concealed by passengers. The cooperation is part of a programme of support from UK to increase the capacity of Kenya’s counter-terrorism operations. Other support includes the donation of a Rubber Inflatable Boat to police in Lamu, X-ray

equipment for the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and air surveillance equipment to counter piracy. Security forces in Kenya at airports have been trained on how to detect shoe bombs, underpants bombs that are used by terrorists in other parts of the world. This is set to broaden aviation security detection capability at airports across Kenya. Kamau said the Government has put security as a priority and urged Kenyans to cooperate with police and other State agents.

US-led airstrikes hit ISIS targets in Iraq Western powers have now launched airstrikes against Islamic extremists barely hours after they vowed to bring the militants to justice. US military targeted an ISIS position near Baghdad in what they described as “the first strike taken as part of our expanded efforts beyond protecting our own people and humanitarian missions to hit (ISIS) targets as Iraqi forces go on offense, as outlined in the President’s speech last Wednesday”
according to a statement from the US Central Command. The airstrike, which occurred about 35 km southwest of Baghdad, destroyed an ISIS fighting position that had been firing at Iraqi forces, Central Command said. The attack came as leaders from more than two dozen nations from the Arab League, the European Union and United Nations met in the French capital, Paris, on Monday termed the ISIS a threat to the international com-
munity and agreed to “ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.” French President François Hollande, who hosted the conference with his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Masum, said there was “no time to lose” in international efforts against ISIS. The meeting came barely a day after ISIS, which calls itself the Islamic State, underlined its threats over the weekend by posting a video showing the beheading of British aid worker David Haines and threatening the

Belgian court grants convicted rapist and murderer’s death wish A Belgian court has allowed doctors to end the life of a murderer and rapist serving a life sentence after he requested to die. Frank van Den Bleeken,50, asked the court to allow him ask doctors to terminate his life under the laws of the country that permit one to ask for euthanasia. The law has been in effect for the last 12 years. Through his lawyer, Jos Vander Velpen, Bleeken told the court he wanted his life ended to avoid psychological torture, adding that he had no hope of being released. The court heard the
convict, who has been behind bars for nearly 30 years, was suffering “unbearably” because he was not given psychological support. In a televised documentary, Bleeken said sexual criminals should not be neglected. “If people commit a sexual crime, help them to deal with it. Study links rare blood type to memory loss There may be a link between a rare blood type and memory loss in later life, American research suggests. People with AB blood group, which is found in four per cent of the world’s population, appear more likely to develop thinking and memory problems than those with other blood groups. Data analysed from about 30,000 US citizens aged 45 and above identified 495 participants who had developed thinking and memory problems, or cognitive impairment, during the three-year study. They were compared to 587 people with no cognitive problems. People with AB blood type made up six per cent of the group who developed cognitive impairment, which is higher than the four per cent found in the general population. They were 82 per centmore likely to have difficulties with day-today memory, language and attention.

FROM THE EAST: A group of Chinese tourists visit Hells Gate National Park, in Naivasha. Kenya has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese government involving the promotion of local tourism.
China - Kenya deal to revive tourism sector In a move that could help more than 7,000 people in the tourism sector regain lost jobs, Kenya has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the People’s Republic of China for promotion, security and transport. Following travel advisories from foreign nations that caused many tourists to leave the country in droves earlier this year, thousands of hotel workers lost jobs. The deal, which was signed between Tourism Cabinet
capitalalert
Secretary Phyllis Kandie and the Deputy Chairman of the China Tourism Administration Wang Sifa, hopes to revive the sector. The deal will also seek to draw Chinese investors into Kenya’s tourism sector for the setting up of more hotels to meet the shortage of 30,000 beds to attain full capacity. Speaking on return from a weeklong tour of China to market Kenya, Kandie said China is a huge market that Kenya is keen to trade with.
“We want China to buy more value added Kenyan products in order to correct the current trade imbalance in favour of China,” she said. Earlier, Kandie said the Government has embarked on a drive that targets at least one million Chinese tourists to Kenya every year. Kandie said the push is meant to add tourist arrivals and not substitute visits from traditional source markets in the West.
The Government has also released Sh200 million for tourism recovery that will be used on a short, medium and long term strategy. Tourism Recovery Taskforce Chairperson Lucy Karume said short-term strategies include implementation of tax measures to enable corporate and business entities take holidays and get tax refunds. It will also include engaging foreign missions that have issued travel advisories to lift the bans.
Aga Khan NGO seeks projects funds applicants The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is accepting applications for funding. The group has already distributed millions of shillings to projects across the country. AKDN is a group of development agencies that focus on health, education, culture, rural development, institution-building and promotion of economic development. Its aim seeks to improve living conditions and opportunities for the poor without bias on their faith, origin or gender. “AKDN implements development projects and provides funding to projects in the countries in which it works,” says Gamala Luitel, a spokeswoman for the Network. Issues and areas of interest for funds applicants should include arts and culture, humanitarian relief, community development or psychological support projects. AKDN has funded education initiatives in Kenya that involve helping in the setting up of the ‘Madrasa Regional Programme’ for learning. Between 2007 and 2009, the Network set up a project for rural communities in parts of Kenya, include bee-keeping, poultry production, goat rearing and vocational training.
Many projects fail to be completed because people lack the organisational skills to make them happen. ‘Trello’, a free-to-try online tool, allows users to draw a list of projects on a digital whiteboard in a way that encourages people to get the job done. From planning new businesses to working on home improvement ideas or personal projects, Trello has a wide range of uses. Small investment groups like chamas can use it as it allows users to invite as many people as possible to use the ‘board’ for free. The tool is available from ‘trello.com’ for free, though additional features cost as little as Sh440 per user per month. Using a ‘checklist’ and a ‘due date’ system, the board supervisor can assign tasks as others move tasks according to how far they have come in implementing them. If a group’s treasurer is supposed to collect money, they can make a list of names of the people who have made contributions and share them with the rest of the team. The tool also allows users to add pictures to post for the board to look more interesting. “Trello works wherever you are,” says one of the tool’s developers.

Sh50m centre to benefit Kawangware children Kawangware, home to hundreds of children whose parents cannot afford school fees, will soon receive a community centre that will educate the toddlers. Officials from Children International, an organisation that aims to improve the lives of children in many parts of the
world, says in eight months, the Sh50 million centre will be operational. “The centre will be open to deserving beneficiaries by June next year. About 7,000 people will benefit when we reach our peak in a couple of years,” said Children International Kenya
Director Philemon Chebon in a previous announcement. “It will support needy children aged between 0 and 19 in Kawangware and Kangemi areas. Our programme and benefits include clothing, annual preventive medical exams, medical curative exams, medical
curative visits, medicines, medical referrals, dental care, malnutrition rehabilitation and education benefit,” he said. Construction is expected to start early next month. Chebon said the group will partner with local leaders to select beneficiaries.
Samsung says LG damaged its products Samsung has accused its manufacturing rival, LG, of damaging its products. The alleged vandalism is said to have taken place earlier this month ahead of a major electronics trade fair in Berlin. LG accepted that two washing machines were damaged but said it was accidental claiming that the model’s hinges were weak and that is why the damage occurred. In a statement LG said; “If our company had an
intention to destroy products of a certain company to tarnish the image of the product, it would be common sense to not have our executives directly carry out such acts.” Their executives were examining Samsung’s goods and even offered to pay for four of the damaged machines at one store, although only two were damaged by them during the inspection. Samsung on the other hand said that one senior
executive and some employees of LG were seen deliberately destroying some of their washing machines in stores in Germany. In a statement, Samsung said; “It is very unfortunate that Samsung had to request that a high-ranking executive be investigated by the nation’s legal authorities, but this was inevitable, as we concluded that we had to get to the bottom of this incident.” German police have already questioned those involved.

Fuel prices fall as import costs drop The prices of diesel, petrol and kerosene have fallen, officials from Kenya’s Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) have said. The regulator cut the maximum retail price of a litre of diesel by Sh0.62 to Sh102.36 in Nairobi and that of kerosene by Sh1.42 per litre to Sh81.63. Meanwhile, the price of petrol fell by Sh4.98 per litre to Sh111.64. Fuel prices have a big effect on inflation in Kenya, which relies heavily on diesel for transport, power generation and agriculture.
In Kenya, kerosene is used by close to 25 million people for cooking and lighting. The regulator said the cost of importing crude oil fell in August compared with the previous month, causing the price of kerosene, diesel and petrol to also drop. The government started a monthly review of retail fuel prices in 2010 after they shot upwards, driving up the cost of living. The price adjustments took effect on September 15, 2014 and will stay in place for one month.

Intel wheelchair to ease paraplegics’ movement Paraplegics are dependent on others to move around. However, with the innovation Intel Interconnected Wheelchair, this is no more. The specialised chair uses a downloadable app to the user’s smartphones for communication. Users can know the status of their health through the biochemical data collected and sent to their smartphones by the smart chair. This alerts them to raise an alarm if they develop health complications for quick action. Locating places is another possible challenge for the people confined to wheelchairs especially if they have to move on their own. With Interconnected Wheelchair, navigation is easy since it allows one to locate places, while showing the easiest route to the destination. Mechanical problems that can further aggravate injuries are catered for. Detection of mechanical malfunction is fast with the aid of this tech-

Samburu moran make-up helps retain their attraction Westernisation has taught us that make-up for beauty is a preserve for women. This is not true. If you doubt it, watch the Samburu morans. The warriors have practised detailed facial adornment for decades. This earned members of the community the name Samburu, which loosely means butterflies. It also means the leather bag for carrying honey and meat by members of the Maasai community. Maasai and other neighbouring communities considered the emphasis on good looking to that of butterflies. With time, they lost their original name Lokop. The butterfly morans applied huge amounts of colour to emphasise on the looks of their upper part of the body. Embroidering art Australian visual artist, Meredith Woolnough, creates intricate embroidery patterns inspired by nature. Meredith used to collect skeletonised leaves for as long as she could remember. This inspired the embroidery art. She uses soluble fabric which dissolves in water to create her art. The fabric allows Meredith to create fragile sculptures that can be suspended in air. To create the dense signature patterns, she repeatedly stitches the fabric.
on the strands. The red ochre is applied on the face with other bright colours, such as orange. Just like today’s women who apply make up to highlight the eyes, they also apply a distinctive colour on the eye lines to make them prominent. Although they have a different identification name, the Samburu are closely related in almost all aspects of social, economic, cultural and political aspects with the Maassai. They even share the language; only that they live in the northern frontier of the Rift Valley. Women beauty is not emphasised. Whenever they visit moran parties, they darken the eye brows and clean shaven heads. This earns them respect from potential future husband.

Keeping the faith
Salma Hayek Jiménez has the most weird guilty pleasure; breastfeeding, even for charity. People will mention, food, sports, games, shopping or visiting places as their addictions but breastfeeding is quite unique. Hayek loves breastfeeding so much that when she gave birth to daughter, Valentina Paloma Pinault, in 2007, she suckled her until she turned four years. As if that is not peculiar enough, the 48 year old actress once breastfed a malnourished baby in Sierra Leone in 2009. The child was one week old and his mother could not provide milk for him. Without hesitation, the Hollywood star took the baby and started breastfeeding him. When asked by why she breastfed another woman’s baby, she said ‘He was very hungry. I was weaning my daughter Valentina, but I still had a lot of milk.”

filmreview Time: 1hr 53 minutes Rating: PG Cast: Shane Harper, Kevin Sorbo, David A. R. White Genre: Drama Plot Josh Wheaton (Shane Harper) is a devout Christian who is a freshman in college. On his first day of philosophy class, Professor Radisson (Kevin Sorbo) tells students to deny in writing that God does not exist or fail his class. Josh finds himself in a pinch because he has to choose between his faith and his future. He chooses the latter and refuses to deny his faith. This infuriates Professor Radisson who tells Josh that he must prove God’s existence by presenting a well researched intellectual argument and evidence over the course of the semester to convince his classmates and the Professor failure to which he will fail the class. Verdict: Christian films tend to be a bit preachy. I do not mean this in a bad way, they are always focusing on passing the message across forgetting the quality. God’s Not Dead however strays from being too preachy. The film lacks in the character development department. If only the characters were developed a bit more the movie would appeal to all Christians and atheists. As it stands now it only appeals to Christians.

Deal decisively with Githurai protests The Government must move with speed to settle the conflict causing spillage of Thika Super Highway protests into a new week in demand of the release of detained police officer (Githurai mayhem rages on over detained policeman September 15, 2014). Many have been injured in the rowdy

Kiprop eyes 1,500m win next season
World 1,500m champion Asbel Kiprop says he is looking forward to a better season next year after failing to beat Djibout’s Suleiman Ayanleh as the IAAF Continental Championships wrapped up in Marrakech, Morocco on Sunday. Kiprop was on a mission to turn the tables after finishing runner-up to Souleiman in the African Championships. In the end, though, Suleiman prevailed over his lanky rival in the African 1-2. The 2011 and 13 world champion had been content to linger second to the back until just before the bell, when Souleiman slipped into the lead and his Africa team-mate followed close behind. With 200m to go, Kiprop tried to get past but Souleiman resisted. It was the same script as the
pair came into the home stretch. Kiprop again attacked but Souleiman held his ground before pulling away to victory in 3:48.91. Kiprop was runners-up in 3:49.10 with European champion Mahiedine MekhissiBenabbad of France trailing third in 3:49.53. “I wanted to beat him for the continental title, yes we were in the same team I wanted revenge having lost at the same stadium last month,” said Kiprop. “I tried to push in the final 200m but he was ahead of me, as we head to the break I will relax hoping to come back stronger next season since there are good upcoming runners coming up,” he said.
I’M BETTER: Ayanleh Souleiman of Djibouti and Asbel Kiprop of Kenya compete in the men’s 1500 metres during the IAAF Continental Cup on Saturday. Kiprop is looking forward to a better season next year after failing to beat Souleiman.
Ferdinand says Moyes was an embarrassment Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand says David Moyes’ tactical approach during his time at Old Trafford was “embarrassing.” Ferdinand was given a warm reception by United’s players and fans as Sir Bobby Charlton presented him with a pre-match gift. His new side however lost 4-0. The 35-year-old spent 12 years with United, who made him the world’s most expensive defender when they signed him for Sh4.38billion from Leeds in 2002. Ferdinand gave his views on
Moyes’ time at the club in a new autobiography, #2sides. And the QPR defender says the Scot created a “negative vibe” within the squad with mixed messages on the training ground. “He tried to impose a vision but never seemed to be completely clear what that vision should be,” he said. “Unintentionally, he created a negative vibe where, with Fergie, it had always been positive. “He’d slowly lost us. I didn’t enjoy playing under him. Sometimes our main tactic
was the long, high, diagonal cross. It was embarrassing. “Moyes’ innovations led to negativity and confusion. It was always how to stop the other side. Moyes set us up not to lose. We’d been accustomed to playing to win.” The former England defender also revealed that Moyes’ decision to ban healthy, low-fat chips on nights before matches also left players “p***** off ”, and that following his sacking in April, players asked for them to be reinstated by standin boss Ryan Giggs.

Gor targeting Ulinzi victory Gor Mahia skipper Jerry Onyango is confident that his team will return to winning ways when they play Ulinzi Stars in the Kenyan Premier League match tomorrow. The captain says the club will bounce back draws with Kenya Commercial Bank and latest Tusker. “Gor have a chance of moving back to the top in our game in hand over their top three rivals. I can say we were unlucky against Tusker,” said the captain. Sofapaka will start the week at the summit on 43 points ahead of Gor on goal difference with Tusker two adrift in third. The soldiers are in eighth with 31 points “We know Ulinzi is a quality side and we expect a tough match. However, we are prepared for them.” Jerim also gave credit to the new coach Frank Nuttall saying he is the man to finish what Bobby Williamson began at Gor. He notes that everyone in the team is eager to learn from him as they bid to retain the league title they won last term “The entire team has an obligation to support him. Not just me but the entire playing unit. We are glad and we welcome him on board. It’s a transition and the best we can do is to cooperate and give our utmost best,” he says. “Nuttal comes on board at a time the league is headed for the home stretch. And for the few training session we have had with him, I can say he shares a lot of similarities with our former coach,” he concluded.

I’m ready for Pacquiao, vows Mayweather TUESday, september 16, 2014
i’m no dodger: Floyd Mayweather has admitted that he has in the past been handpicking rivals but denied dodging Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao.
Boxer Floyd Mayweather, fresh from a lopsided victory over Marcos Maidana, denied he is trying to safeguard his undefeated record by avoiding Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather has admitted he handpicked rivals in the past but says there is nothing unscrupulous about not fighting Pacquiao, one of the few fighters who can match the American’s hand speed. “I am not ducking or dodging no opponent,” said Mayweather, who turns 38 in February. “If a Pacquiao fight presents itself then let’s make it happen.” Mayweather said Saturday after beating Maidana for the second time in four months that he is open to a fight against Pacquiao, but it would have to be on Mayweather’s terms. On Sunday, Stephen Espinoza, vice president of sports cable channel Show-
time said that Pacquiao is “absolutely” his first choice as Mayweather’s next opponent. Mayweather is in the middle of a six-fight deal with Showtime. In the past, Mayweather (47-0) has always tried to sidestep questions about facing Pacquiao, who is getting set to fight in Macau in November against Chris Algieri. “Pacquiao needs to focus on the guy in front of him. Then we’ll see what the future holds,” Mayweather said. Pacquiao and Mayweather have held talks about staging a mega-fight before but they always broke down before a deal could be signed. It is unlikely Pacquiao would agree to the terms that Maidana did for his rematch, allowing Mayweather to handpick his referee, Kenny Bayless, and change two of the three judges from the first fight.
Colombian women cycling team kit raises eyebrows
The Colombian women’s cycling team (right) were meant to be showing the world what they were made of as they posed in their new kit this week. But they appeared to show a little too much as all eyes were drawn to the bizarre new flesh-coloured design stretching across their lower torso. As the smiling athletes took to the stage, they seemed blissfully unaware of the blunder, which
left them looking completely exposed at the groin. The Colombian team, which is sponsored by the country’s capital city of Bogota, was wearing the outfit to take part in a cycling competition in Italy. The race is held in honour of former Italian champion, Michela Fanini, whose promising career was cut short when she died in a car crash in 1994 at just 21 years old..
It is difficult to ascertain whether the outrageous new strip was a publicity stunt or a genuine fashion faux-pas but the team may think twice about turning out in it again. The design has caused a stir on social media - with many ranking it among the worst kits ever seen at a sporting event. Some criticised the stunt for eye catcher: The Colombian women’s cycling team appeared to show going too far.
Federer into another Davis cup final Roger Federer secured Switzerland’s place in the final of the Davis Cup for the first time since 1992 with comfortable win over Fabio Fognini in Geneva on Sunday. Roared on by a capacity crowd in the Palexpo Arena, Federer dismantled the world number 17 Fognini 6-2 6-3 7-6 (4) in under two hours. Switzerland, who lost to US in their only other Davis Cup final appearance in 1992, set up a title round with France, who beat holders Czech Republic at Roland Garros “It’s nice to share it (victory) with team members,” Federer said.
“I think I really struggled today. I think Fabio struggled all weekend. “It’s tough conditions, pretty quick court, so it’s always going to happen especially if you are not serving so well. “I thought today wasn’t the best performance from both of us but then again you’ve got to fight with what you’ve got and in the end I’m happy to make the difference.’ Federer (pictured right) gave the Swiss the first point on Friday by easing past Simone Bolelli before Stanislas Wawrinka doubled their advantage with a straight-sets victory over Fognini.

West Ham draw at Hull City West Ham twice came from behind to earn a battling 2-2 draw with Hull City in an entertaining clash at the KC Stadium. The game sprung into life six minutes before the interval when City’s record-signing Abel Hernandez leaped above a static James Tomkins to head the hosts into the lead on his debut. He almost doubled his and the Hull’s tally five minutes later, but saw his goal-bound effort come back off the crossbar. However, Hernandez was then emulated by another debutant, as Enner Valencia, on his first start for the Hammers, unleashed a thunderous equaliser just five minutes after the break. Former Hammer Mohamed Diame coolly converted an opportunist chance to give the home side the lead for the second time in the match after 64 minutes, but once again the visitors came straight back, this time after Diafra Sakho’s cross-shot managed to evade Hull keeper Allan McGregor and rebound off the legs of City skipper Curtis Davies to level proceedings for the second time. Valencia almost won this enthralling encounter at the death for the Hammers, but saw his header deflected over by Michael Dawson on the line.
