MP asks Kenya to free Briton held over work permit
UK legislator Andrew Griffiths has launched a drive to have Kenyan authorities release 60-year-old Graham Gallier, whom he claims has been illegally detained. Gallier, who allegedly suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure, was first arraigned in court in 2011 charged with false child maintenance initiated by a former friend, reports Uttoxeter News.

He was cleared of all the charges but the courts allegedly refused to return his passport. He has since been stranded in Kenya. Following the ruling of the case, Gallier considered setting up a business with another Kenya-based English associate. As they held an initial meeting to discuss the idea, Immigration Department officials pounced and arrested Gallier for working without a legal permit, charges he
denies. Gallier has been imprisoned for five days. Griffiths says he has not been accorded access to justice. Griffiths, the Member of Parliament for Burton, has been to the Foreign Office and spoken in UK parliament over Gallier’s case. He told parliament: “My constituent Graham Gallier is awaiting trial in Kenya on charges he denies. “I have deep concerns about the legal process to which Graham Gallier is being subjected.
“His case has been repeatedly adjourned, his passport has been held for more than three years, his health is declining and he is being denied access to justice.” Gallier’s wife, Jan, said: “Graham has been in prison since Friday. The conditions are absolutely terrible – 70 men sleeping head to foot on a floor in a room about 10 feet square. “He couldn’t eat as he couldn’t face using the toilets. “He is due to appear in court again and the last case took more
than three years, with many unreasonable adjournments. “We need help to campaign for our Government to get him out of the country. Human rights are not being adhered to in Kenya. “He is 61, has diabetes and severely ulcerated legs and is innocent of the charges brought against him – the court case keeps being adjourned. “We need help and funds to get him home to our hospital. “We cannot go against the Government of Kenya, so I think
my only hope is to talk to the President of Kenya but I can’t get to him. I desperately need more signatures to get our government to listen.” Uttoxeter News says the couple have made many payments as requested by Kenyan magistrates, but have been unable to get Gallier’s passport back. An online petition, Innocent English man held in Kenya for almost four years, has been launched and is slowly gathering pace.

Kenyan don must leave SA, orders minister
South Africa’s Deputy Defence Minister Kebby Maphatsoe has said Kenyan constitutional law expert Prof Shadrack Gutto should leave the Rainbow Nation because he was not born there. Gutto has been critical of President Jacob Zuma and the African National Congress (ANC) party. Maphatsoe was addressing crowds at the unveiling of a
tombstone for former Umkhonto we Sizwe combatant Linda Jabane in Soweto. “There is this professor Gutto who is not South African. He is a counter-revolutionary, that professor. And it’s high time we talk about him. He thinks he is better placed to analyse our situation in South Africa. “Comrades, if we were very bad we would have said you are not
a South African. He thinks he is special. He must go back to his country to analyse like he does here… they will arrest him and (make him) face prison. “What does he know about the struggle of our country? Prof Gutto leave us in our beautiful South Africa,” he said. Gutto, who was born in Kenya but has South African citizenship, began his career as a lecturer at
the University of Nairobi. He was forced into exile in 1982 during the government crackdown on critical academics. Gutto says he’s weighing on the steps he can take. “It’s a weak strike to tell me as an academic that I shouldn’t analyse issues in an informed manner within our constitutional framework,” said Gutto.
TV hostess feeds on crow after losing bet A woman ate a crow on live TV after losing a bet she made months ago. Wendy Williams, a famous US-based TV hostess and comedian, proved she is a woman of her word when she ate the bird on a live airing of ‘The Wendy Williams Show’. Last year, Williams made it clear to viewers that she didn’t believe famous socialite Kim Kardashian and rapper Kanye West would
make their marriage last after the couple tied the knot. She felt so strongly about it that she vowed to eat a real crow 73 days after the couple got married. Minutes before the meal was aired, fans on social media site Twitter were already posting comments under the hashtag ‘#WendyEatsCrow’. The number 73 is a reference to Kim’s
previous marriage to basketball star, Kris Humphries, which ended after just 72 days. Kardashian and West have been married for well over 100 days, and Williams decided to make good on her word. On Monday, September 15, 2014, during a live airing of her show, Williams brought a special guest to cook a meal known as crow gumbo, which was served up alongside a tall glass of
water. By then, Williams had already looked into various ways a crow is eaten in different parts of the world. She also checked to make sure eating it is not illegal. She imagined the bird would be “tangy.” The daytime TV hostess then made good on her comments when, with the whole world watching, bit into the bird. She said the bite tasted similar to chicken liver.

Scientists are teaching mice how to talk by giving them a human gene Scientists have given some mice the human gene responsible for speech and development. In the first study designed to assess how adding parts of the human element to the brains of different animals affects their mental development, scientists gave mice a human gene associated with language. They found the modified mice learned new ways to find food in mazes faster than normal mice. The findings suggest that a gene known as Foxp2 may help humans with a key component of learning language — transforming experiences, such as hearing the word ‘glass’ when a person is shown a glass of water. Foxp2 is a gene mutation that ap-
peared more than half a million years ago and may be the key to understanding mankind’s unique ability to produce and understand speech. For the study, scientists used hundreds of mice modified to carry the human version of Foxp2. Mice carrying the gene developed more efficient brain functions. Building on that, neuroscientists led by Christiane Schreiweis and Ann Graybiel of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) trained mice to find chocolate in a maze. Mice with the human gene learned the maze’s route within seven days while regular mice took 11, scientists reported in a study dubbed Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Archaeologists find 700-year-old remains of a couple holding hands A couple that has have been holding hands for 700 years have been uncovered at a ‘lost’ chapel in Leicestershire, UK. The skeletons were dug up at the Chapel of St Morrell, a site of pilgrimage in Hallaton during the 14th Century. Local volunteers had been digging
the site, believed to be built on top of a Roman building, two weeks a year for four years. “We have seen similar skeletons before from Leicester where a couple have been buried together,” Vicky Score, an archaeologist from of the University of Leicester told MailOnline. “The
main thing is why were they buried out up there? There is a perfectly good church in Hallaton. Was it a special place?” The chapel may have been an area of pilgrimage. Alternatively, the bodies might have been refused burial in the main church, perhaps because they were
criminals, foreigners or sick. The skeletons are both believed to be of a similar age, but Ms Score said further analysis is needed to know how old they were at the time of death. They were discovered among nine other bodies from the same period.

The Government will spend Sh661 million to prevent the entry of Ebola into Kenya, the Director of Medical Services, Dr Nicholas Muraguri has said. Two Italian men, aged 30 and 41, are believed to have picked up the car and driven it to Spain where they allegedly collected four kilos of cocaine and between 150 and 200 grams of cannabis. The pair then reportedly drove back to France with the haul stashed in the car, apparently convinced the diplomatic license plates would protect them from being searched at the border. Book unveils life in jail for female Mau Mau warriors New research on the treatment of ‘hardcore’ Mau Mau female prisoners by the British has shed light on how ideas on gender, deviancy and mental health shaped colonial practices of punishment. The study was titled ‘“Unsound” minds and broken bodies: the detention of “hardcore” Mau Mau women at Kamiti and Gitamayu Detention Camps in Kenya, 1954–1960’. It was conducted by Gates Cambridge Scholar, Katherine Bruce-Lockhart and is the first to make use of new material on a camp at Gitamayu, which was used to hold “hardcore” female detainees. From 1954 to 1960, the UK detained about 8,000 women under the emergency powers used to combat the Mau Mau rebellion. A majority of female detainees were held at Kamiti detention camp.

A goldfish named George has had life-saving surgery in Melbourne, Australia, and is recovering well. The 10-year-old fish underwent emergency surgery for a large head tumour after the owner decided she couldn’t let go of her beloved pet. George had not been eating or swimming when the owner walked into the hospital seeking help. Dr Tristan Rich, who performed the
surgery, first knocked George out in a bucket of anesthetic, before moving him to a bucket with mild anesthetic for the 45-minute procedure. “Once George was asleep, Tristan ran a tube from the maintenance bucket which was being oxygenated, into George’s mouth, so that the water with the maintenance dose of anaesthetic washed over his gills,” the hospital said on their Facebook page.
“Dr Tristan worked quickly to remove the large tumour, although the size of it meant that he had to use a gelatine sponge to control the bleeding during surgery.” George was then sealed up with tissue glue and moved into a final bucket with clean water for recovery. “The surgery went swimmingly and George has now returned home with his loving owner,” the hospital said.

Cost of living set to reduce as Kengen adds 70mw from Olkaria
The high cost of living is set to drop significantly as a result of reduced cost of electricity following the addition of 70 megawatts to the national power grid. The cost of basic commodities has been on the rise since May with the failure of the long rains, which Kenya predominantly relies on to generate electricity. This led to the use of diesel to generate electricity with the extra costs passed on to
the consumers. Addressing journalist on Tuesday, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet secretary Davis Chirchir said the Ministry will from next month add 70 megawatts from Olkaria geothermal plant. “As we promised in September last year, the price of fuel will go down as we are replacing fossil fuel and using our own geothermal resource,” Chirchir said. The Cabinet Secretary said the government is committed to limiting overreliance on
diesel for power production because it keeps fluctuating according to international markets. More than 60 per cent of Kenyans rely on electricity as their source of energy. It is projected that the injection of the geothermal energy into the national grid will increase the current megawatts to 2300, and cut power cost by about 30 per cent. Currently, consumers pay Sh7.22 per kilowatt, but this may reduce to a low of Sh2.
inothernews Angry mob dumps politician in dustbin Angry Ukrainians Tuesday frogmarched a politician from a building and threw him into a dustbin accusing him of voting in support of an amnesty grant to pro-Russian rebels in January. A video emerged in the country showing Vitaly Zhuravsky being picked by an angry mob in Kiev and shoved in the bin as they tried to restrain him from getting out. Images of the mob throwing a
tyre and pouring a liquid on him were seen. A woman was heard begging the boys to let her kick him too. The politician was a member of a party of ejected President Viktor Yanukovych, who led Ukraine from 2010 to 2014. The mob accused Zhuravsky of writing a bill suppressing anti-government demonstrators during early this year’s revolution.
Chirchir said geothermal energy will save Kenya about Sh28 billion spent annually on fossil fuel alone. Investors have traditionally shunned Kenya and opted for Egypt and South Africa due to the high cost of production as a result of electricity. But as Kenya seeks alternative sources, such as wind and the elaborate geothermal plants, the cost of power will shrink, making her an investment choice.

SMEs to gain from lower calling rates The cost of doing business in East Africa is set to drop, thanks to a network initiated by the East Africa Community member states that will lower mobile phone calling rates. Experts say the initiative is good news, especially for Small and Medium Enterprises who have, for long, been affected by high cross-border calling rates that limit the communication window, a key aspect in the business space. A 2013 report from businesspromoting group, Entrepreneurial Ecosystem, and research by the Overseas Development Institute have cited high communication costs as a barrier to small businesses in member countries. Both reports have termed high calling rates in the region as a barrier to free trade. If effected, the one network project will scrap roaming charges on phone calls made by individuals from two East Africa countries. Representatives at a stakeholders meeting hosted by Airtel Rwanda a month ago say the project is part of regional integration strategy that will lower the cost of doing business among people in the region. A call to Uganda from Kenya costs at least Sh7.62 per minute on some networks. This means it is two times more expensive to call Uganda from Kenya than to call India and other overseas countries such as Canada or US which cost only Sh3 per minute.
RELIEVED: A farmer makes a call on his phone. High communication costs have been a barrier to small businesses.
Gladys Mukei, a second-hand clothes dealer at Gikomba market in Nairobi is wondering whether the EAC spirit still lives. She says while in Uganda where she buys most of her stock, she relies on social media services such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter to communicate to clients and associates back in Nairobi for fear of harsh roaming charges. ‘’Most of them fear picking my calls since they fear they will be charged,”
she says. No business can thrive on non-verbal communication, she says. Another trader at the market, who identifies himself as Muthoka, says lower communication tariffs are long overdue. The move to lower call rates comes barely three months after a successful launch of the East Africa Payment System (EAPS) that has seen the cost of cash transfer within East Africa lowered.

It has recently been released for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 videogame devices, further boosting sales.
Consumer rights Credit info sharing allows security-free bank loans The cost of living has been rising over the years as people discover that taking a bank loan is a way of stabilising their finances. In the past, banks were forced to deal with irresponsible borrowers as customers were subjected to stringent borrowing regulations. But the Kenya Banker’s Association (KBA) helped work out a solution known as the Kenya Credit Information Sharing Initiative (KCISI). Launched in August 2009, the initiative is helping rival parties through a process known as Credit Information Sharing (CIS). This allows customers to secure loans as fast as possible, says KBA Chief Executive Habil Olaka. CIS makes it easier for customers to use borrowing and savings track record as security instead of using physical assets such as land, vehicles and household items. A customer can use their
track record to negotiate for lower interest rates and favourable credit agreements with the bank. Customers are free to file a complaint with what is known as the CIS Mediation Centre (CISMEC) if they feel their bank has treated them unfairly. The Mediation Centre is located on the 13th Floor of International House along Mama Ngina Street, in Nairobi. CISMEC lawyers will then offer them free legal advice. Once a customer has filed a complaint, CISMEC officials will confirm whether their argument is valid. They will then open a case file and start investigations and inform a customer of the results either by e-mail or phone call. They will facilitate a settlement between the customer and lender. The customer and lender are free to take the matter to court if they find the need to do so.

bumper harvest: A farmer admires his water melon fruit.
Farmer’s move from rice to watermelons pays off big As weather patterns across the country become unpredictable, farmers at the Ahero Irrigation Scheme, one of the key rice farming projects in western Kenya, are turning to other crops during the dry season to earn them more revenue. One such farmer, Dennis Rabare, 38, who had been growing Basmati rice for more than a decade, turned to watermelons two years ago. The fruit earns him seven to 10 times more than he used to get from rice. Rabare says he used to earn
between Sh300, 000 and Sh400, 000 a year from the crop “because we only cultivate rice once a year”. He explains that rice takes five months before its ready for harvesting after which the farms require a resting period of four months. By the time the four months are over, the climate is unfavourable and the farmers cannot cultivate their rice farms for weeks. Mr Rabare now grows watermelons three times a year as they mature after 75 to 85 days. “I leased 20 acres
and planted watermelons in the whole farm,” he recalls. Floods during the rainy season destroyed 11 acres of his fruit but he still got good yields from the remaining nine acres. Mr Rabare said he has earned Sh1.5 million over the past year, mostly from bulk sales. Had the heavy rains not damaged his crop he would have earned Sh7 million from the 20 acres compared to Sh700, 000 he would have earned from rice over the same period.

Regular maintenance vital for painted walls Painting is probably one of the final touches in the making of your home but stains will always appear and ruin the painted surface. Painted surfaces can be stained by regular touching, sweat, blood and spills of all manner of liquids. Plant stains also can form unpleasant layers on your walls. These stains are also referred to as waterborne. Stains from organic compounds such as grease, cooking fat, ink, among others can make unpleasant marks that are permanent or stubborn. They are sometimes called oil borne. The waterborne stains are easier to deal with than oil borne. Waterborne as the name suggests can be cleaned with water with the help of a mild detergent like soap. You need to use a damp sponge and rub the spot of the stain gently.

Aggressive detergents are discouraged because they scorch the surface. Sprinkle the surface with clean water to remove the dirt or paint residue that may dry and mar further your wall with streaks. Stubborn stains can be tricky to deal with since they almost bond permanently to the surface. You have to use an organic solvent. Scrub the stain with a spongy material in a circular motion to avoid scratching areas that are not affected. Walls are irresistible to children. Pencil marks can be cleaned with art gum erasers while ink can be wiped with a mixture of lemon and table salt or dilute alcohol.
Stains from organic compounds such as grease, cooking fat, ink, among others can make unpleasant mark that are permanent or stubborn.

Golden rules for polo-goers The world of Polo is often viewed as glamorous and wealthy despite the atmosphere being relatively relaxed and informal compared to other sporting events. Once defined as “The Sport of Kings”, Polo gained popularity in Kenya many years agothe Nairobi Polo Club having been founded in 1907. Spectators are either in the grandstand seating or at the more exclusive members’ enclosure. The difference is a choice between eating a picnic on the lawn, or being presented with a lavish sit-down lunch, afternoon tea and continuous champagne. Lunch comes first, then the polo. Halftime (only five minutes) brings the
tradition of divot stomping, where the turf kicked up by the ponies (never referred to as horses), is trodden back into place by spectators. Dress code is usually smart casual. Standards are rather smarter in members’ enclosures, where a badge permitting entry should also be worn. One can never really be over dressed or underdressed at a polo event. A hat and sunglasses for sun protection can be worn but the ultimate rule is to always be comfortable. Top tip Women should wear smart, flat shoes that suit both walking/standing on grass and divot stomping or opt for wedges or low comfortable heels. If it’s sunny outside, white is always chic and bright colours are always in. We (The X News fashion crew) take a look at the most fashionable attendees of last weekend’s polo games.

Chilli Mango’s street wear with a Kenyan theme
Chilli Mango Clothing is an Afro-Urban street wear design house started in September 2010. It’s known for its unique designs of easy and comfortable casual wear including t-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts based on Kenyan themes like the Kenyan flag. The founder and head designer, Njeri Gikera, wanted to find the perfect mix between African and Western designs in her line of collections. She says she is very much in love with African art and
culture and was seeking to fill the void in the market with Kenyan designs that cater to local interests. Their clothes are mostly made of African fabrics that most people can identify with like the leso, batiks and kikois.

Ear lobe stretching a statement of fashion The trends in body piercing and body modification tend to come in waves. One type of body piercing that has been in fashion for several years now is the earlobe stretching. This is the deliberate expansion of the earlobe in order to wear a certain type of jewellery. The practice has been around for ages with the Maasai, Turkana community among those that practise it. Normally, earlobes are pierced with a 20 or 18-gauge needle but most piercers refuse to punch large holes because removing a huge chunk of tissue makes it difficult, if not impossible, to size it back down later. Forcing a hole to stretch makes it easier to return it to a smaller size if one decides to gauge it down later. That is why most people do it themselves using ear gauges. An ear gauge is forced into a slightly smaller hole in the ear lobe making it stretch. It is usually done in small increments.

Nations must unite to defeat terrorism The decision by Britain to help Kenya with bomb detectors is a show of solidarity in the war on terror (UK gives Kenya antiterror bomb detectors, training kits for airport September 16, 2014).
Kenya was on the wrong side of the West even before President Uhuru Kenyatta assumed office. But the move shows a softening stand towards Kenya and unity in the war on terror, especially at airports.
Kenya plunged into panic when fire gutted a section of the Jomo Kenyatta Intentional Airport last year only for police to report that it was due to an electric fault. Security of airports has been marred by suspicions that it was
a target of the criminals. An attack of a nation affects others to a certain extent because terrorists know no ideological difference. The detectors will help Kenya secure airports, UK and other
multinational travellers. A global threat calls for a global approach. Charles Mwangi- Park Place, Karen

Prisons whip GSU to grab county title
Former national volleyball men champions Kenya Prisons got one over reigning champions the General Service Unit by winning the Nairobi County Chairman’s Cup at the University of Nairobi over the weekend. The warders Prisons defeated arch rivals General Service Unit (GSU) in 3-2 (17-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-14 and 12-15) in a hotly contested final that lasted about an hour and half to claim the overall title. “We came here to fine tune for the next round of league matches and I am happy with my
team’s performance,” Prisons coach Gideon Chenje said. “Prisons against GSU is usually a tough affair, now I know we have a psychological advantage over them going to Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) league fixtures in Eldama Ravine this weekend,” he said. In the women’s category, KCB ‘A’ A’ defeated KCB ‘B’ in straight sets of 25-20, 25-17 and 28-26 to win the title. Winners in each category were awarded Sh20,000, while runners-up received Sh10,000.

Hazard on the verge of extending Chelsea stay
Eden Hazard is on the verge of signing a new contract with Chelsea worth Sh29.2million a week. Talks with the Chelsea forward’s lawyer are at advanced stages and the club is hoping to conclude negotiations with the Belgian international in the next few weeks. Hazard’s extended deal, which will be worth around Sh1.46billion to the forward over the next five seasons, will also be a major blow to long-term suitors Paris St
Germain. Hazard is one of Chelsea’s most influential players and will be rewarded with a deal that reflects his growing status. The forward, who was named the club’s player of the year at the end of last season, was handed the No10 shirt vacated by Juan Mata at the start of the new campaign. Hazard only joined the club two years ago from Lille in a deal worth Sh4.67billiion and has settled in London after initial difficulties. His partnership with new
signing Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa continues to flourish and he is now considered to be one of the club’s biggest assets. Chelsea, who are top of the Barclays Premier League after a stunning start to the season, are busy tying up their best young players on long-term deals. They announced last week Thibaut Courtois, who has replaced Petr Cech as the club’s first choice keeper, has signed a new five-year contact.

Ronaldo set for return to Man United
‘I have a pretty good idea of when he wants to go. It won’t be this month or next month, but he wants to go back to Manchester United’ Everything is in place for Cristiano Ronaldo to make a dream return to Manchester United. The 29-year-old swapped Old Trafford for Real Madrid in a Sh11.68 billion deal more than five years ago, but speculation has mounted that he could be set for a return to play under Louis van Gaal. Newspaper reports have suggested the Ballon D’Or winner is unhappy with Real Madrid’s transfer policy and wants to play again for the club he represented between 2003 and 2009. Football expert Guillem Balague says a deal is likely with finance not an issue for Manchester United. “I have a pretty good idea of when he wants to go. It won’t be this month or next month, but he wants to go back to Manchester United and everything is in place.” Balague said: “He is unhappy and he’s said so – but then he corrected himself by saying ‘I didn’t mean what he said’. It was a bit confusing. “Anyway, you have to say he’s not happy that Ozil left and he didn’t like the fact that Xabi Alonso and Di Maria left. “He has this idea, I think, that at Real Madrid he is doing a job and he is working, but he enjoyed himself almost like a kid at Manchester United. “He dreams of going back to Manchester United and Manchester United have got all the finances in place to get him. “When will that be? It depends, of course, on a lot of things. It depends on Real Madrid and on Cristiano himself.”
THE RETURN? Real Madrid’s Ronaldo. Rumours of his return to Man United abound in Spanish media.

Intense training for Kenya 7s side as season looms The national 7s team has intensified training ahead of the Safaricom Sevens and the 2014/15 HSBC World Series campaign. Coach Paul Treu has said top four finish will be the minimum target for his side this season. He says he intends to use next week’s Safaricom 7s at Kasarani to fine tune the team for the IRB series. Sujaa will use the tournament as part of their preparation ahead of the World Series that kicks-off in Gold Coast, Australia, on October 11-12. With the team undergoing a transition last
season, Treu, believes this is the time for the players to implement his methods as they seek to improve on their eighth finish last season. But he says they will face an uphill task because each team will be vying for an automatic berth at the Rio Games where rugby 7s will make its Olympics debut. “There are a few areas we want to polish, with new young players expected to be drafted into the team, I know we will be strong,” he said. The coach watched some of the players during the National Sevens circuit.

Long-time FIFA incumbent Sepp Blatter will have at least one rival for next year’s presidential election as former senior FIFA executive Jerome Champagne confirmed on Tuesday he would contest it. The 56-year-old Frenchman, who worked closely with Blatter between 2002 and 2005 when he was deputy secretary-general, said on Twitter he had sent a letter to FIFA headquarters in Switzerland that he would be a candidate confirming his initial declaration in London back in January. Champagne had said at the time of the original declaration that he did not think he could beat 77-year-old Blatter, who has been in charge since 1998, if he ran but he had a chance if UEFA chief Michel Platini was a candidate. Since then, though, Blatter has declared himself as a candidate despite stating beforehand he would not stand again and Platini pulled back from the brink even though he declared in Brazil prior to the World Cup finals in June that he could no longer support Blatter. Champagne, a former diplomat who worked on France’s successful bid for the right to host the 1998 World Cup before joining FIFA as an international advisor, said he was delighted that a debate had begun about the future of FIFA and football.

Woods not in a hurry to hire coach Tiger Woods is ‘in no hurry’ to hire a new swing coach as he is yet to swing a club during his latest injury lay-off. The former world number one’s last PGA Tour action was on August 3 when he withdrew after eight holes of the final round at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational after aggravating a back injury. His focus has since been on strength work, meaning the search for Sean Foley’s replacement following their split three weeks ago can wait “I’m I looking for a new coach? As of right now, no, I’m not,” Woods told news reporters when he announced a new sponsor for his tournament, the Hero World Challenge, where he is due to make a comeback in early December. “Right now I’m just trying to get physically better, stronger, faster, and more explosive. I’ve just been shadow swinging without a club, but I’ve been busting my butt in the gym pretty hard.
“I’ve got my strength back, which is nice. Now the next goal is to get my explosiveness and my fast twitch (muscles) going, and that’s the next phase of my training.’ Woods admits that with hindsight, he returned too soon at June’s Quicken Loans National, where he missed the cut. Four of his seven tour appearances this season resulted in missed cuts or withdrawals, while his best finish was 25th at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. “Would I like to play? There’s no doubt, yes. I miss competing, I miss playing, I miss being out here with the guys, I miss all that, but I’m not physically ready for it yet. “As far as coming back this summer too soon, I felt good enough to do it and the only unfortunate part is I couldn’t maintain the conditioning. “As the tournament would wear on, I would get more and more fatigued and tired and I wasn’t as explosive,” he said.

old home: Goodison Park has been Everton’s home ground. The team has been allowed to construct a new 50,000 seater stadium in north Liverpool.
Everton okayed to set up 50,000-seat stadium Everton have been given the greenlight to start planning for a new 50,000-seater stadium in Walton Hall Park in north Liverpool, the Premier League club said on Tuesday. The stadium will spearhead a major regeneration of the area planned by the city council. “On my journey to our home games, as I pass Walton Hall Park, I inevitably think that I am only a minute away from our beloved Goodison (Park)... for several years now, I’ve also thought, if only it was available for our new stadium, it ticks all the boxes,” Everton chairman Bill Kenwright said in a statement. “An opportunity to explore the possibility of securing the new home we’ve
looked for, for so long, is hugely exciting to me, but to do that in a way that supports, transforms and sustains our local communities, in our Everton heartland, is such a wonderful, added bonus.” Everton’s Goodison Park ground, where they have played since 1892, is one of the most atmospheric in English top flight football but a 40,000 capacity means the club cannot generate the kind of match day revenue to enable it compete with their north west rivals and London’s bigger clubs. “Like all Evertonians, I love Goodison Park and have done since the day I first set foot in the Boy’s Pen but the prospect of developing a new stadium is to be encouraged,” Kenwright said.
Oscar Pistorius is unlikely to be welcome at future Diamond League events, a promoter of the series says. Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide after a judge ruled that he killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp by mistake. The 27-year-old faces up to 15 years in jail, although the judge could suspend the sentence or impose a fine, allowing him to compete again. Asked if he would invite Pistorius, Brussels Diamond League
chief Wilfried Meert said: “I don’t think so, no.” Meert believes his stance on the six-time Paralympic gold medallist, who will be sentenced on 13 October, will be shared by other Diamond League promoters. He said: “Having met quite a lot of them recently, once in a while the conversation turned to the Pistorius case and I don’t think there are many around that will accept him again in their meet.”
The International Paralympic Committee has said the South African will be allowed to compete at the 2016 Paralympic Games if he is not in jail. “There will always be so much doubt around him. He is not the kind of person you want to make a promotion for our sport.” Pistorius made history by becoming the first amputee sprinter to compete at the Olympics when he took part in the 400m at London 2012.
Miami want LeBron back
gone to rivals: LeBron has signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers from Miami Heat in the free agency season.
The Miami Heat probably won’t be the same without LeBron James, who decided to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers during the free agency season. Still, there’s Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh to take the helm as the team’s identity but it would seem Dwayne Wade is still far from being the team’s best player. That honour might just go to Chris Bosh this season, having to make the calls during matches and being the overall voice of the team. Bosh almost made a deal
to play with the Houston Rockets but the Heat just managed to be persuasive enough to sign him for the season. “First, I don’t think that’s necessarily Luol’s lockerroom personality. Plus, even when LeBron James was the centre of attention, Erik Spoelstra kept Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem as the two co-captains, and I certainly don’t expect that to change,” said a club official. Bosh also shares a similar trait with James as one of the highest-paid players in the Heat.

Government will refund Kayange expenses for knee surgery, says Oluoch The government will ensure Kenya sevens rugby player Humphrey Kayange is refunded the expenses he incurred for surgery following an injury he got at the Commonwealth Games, Sports Commissioner Gordon Oluoch, has said. Kayange went public about his injury and how he had to seek an alternative to ensure no further delay in getting treatment. He will not be available for selection until February next year. “This should not have happened as we had full medical cover with UAP for all the athletes covering training, competition and post competition as we always do for Team Kenya.” He said Kayange should have sought the team doctor’s guidance on the options
available. “It’s unfortunate if he used his own money. I can’t blame Nock before I know exactly what transpired,” Oluoch said. “I have asked for more details from the insurance company that was supposed to cater for him before refunding him if he used his money. “Let him keep all the records and once I get all these, we will work out how to recover this from the insurance company. It is sad that this issue has just been brought to my attention. It should not have gone to that extent,” said Oluoch.
