States and Kenya stand together in the fight against Al-Shabaab and like-minded terrorist groups,” read a statement sent out by the US office of the Press Secretary. “ As a strong and enduring partner, we will continue to support the Kenyan people in their efforts to
improve their security and confront terrorism. These cowardly acts of our adversaries will not shake our resolve.” The siege at Westgate lasted four days ending with the death of at least 67 people. Somali Islamist group al-Shabab said it carried out the attack in
response to Kenya’s military operations in Somalia. A memorial plaque with names of the victims was unveiled at the Karura forest ahead of a candle-lit vigil on Sunday. Prior to the commemorations, Kenya was on high alert amid fears
The Government has assured Kenyans that it will make critical changes to the management of security organs to avert future acts of terrorism. Deputy President William Ruto says said the Westgate Mall attack that left more than 67 dead was an eye opener. “It was a dark moment for the country. It changed the country for good. We learnt terrorism is real. We have reassessed security structures to make them more responsive and more coordinated,” the Deputy President said in a TV interview Sunday night. He said the Government is working towards coordinated security operations. He said the
coordination will be anchored on intelligence operation. The Deputy President said this in response to critics who claim the Westgate Mall attack took security forces long to neutralise because of an alleged broken chain of command among the different forces that were involved in the operation. Other critics claimed the immediate former National Intelligence Service head Michael Gichangi failed to work on a tip-off of the impending attack. While remaining non-committal on the structural adjustments in the security organs, Ruto said they are deliberating on best ways of making the responses to be in
tandem with challenges. He said more resources have been allocated to the security docket for training of more security personnel and the acquisition of more advanced equipment. “We have put more resources into security than before. For instance, last year we bought 1200 vehicles for the police. Another 1200 vehicles this year. More resources have been allocated to increase police numbers,” the Deputy President said. The Government is also reportred to be strengthening capacity on the digital platform for the security forces to use hardware and software in combating crime and terror attacks well in advance.
of possible attacks by militants. “We are prepared in case of anything. Specialised units are on the ground and we have intensified patrols during this period of the anniversary,” Kenyan police chief David Kimaiyo is quoted as saying by the BBC.
“We have increased the level of preparedness through the necessary software and hardware to tackle challenge” Ruto said. On September 21 last year, heavily armed terrorists stormed the Westgate Mall, Nairobi, and opened fire at shoppers and other occupants of the building. The Al-Qaida linked terror group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the massacre shortly after. This is one of the strings of attaks Kenya has faced from the Somaliabased group since her incursion, more than two years ago, into the war-ravaged Horn of African country that has remained without a stable government sinnce the fall of former dictator Siad Barre in 1991.
Rampaging raccoon a tough match for New York Police Four police officers were needed to restrain a raccoon after it broke into a beauty shop over the weekend. The furry mammal caused so much chaos that the store’s owner was forced to call in local authorities. Cho Oh, the 72-year-old owner of Genesis Beauty Supply in Wakefield, New York, noticed something strange on Saturday after opening the shop at 8:30 a.m. Oh noticed bits of the shop’s ceiling and piles of wigs on the ground, after the animal had gone on an earlier rampage inside the store. Raccoons, mostly found in North America, are known for their intelligence with studies showing that they are able to remember the solution to tasks for up to three years. They are quite skilled at using their front paws, which enable them to perform complex tasks like opening doors. They can also walk on their hind legs whenever the need arises. On Saturday morning, Oh dialled 911 for assistance. After a long battle with the intruder, the police were able to wrestle the raccoon into a cage. It took four officers, a bag of snacks, a tranquilizer gun, and a catch pole to coax the racoon into a cage. Unfortunately, the cage door flew open and the raccoon ran down to the front of the store window, where passers-by gathered to watch the confrontation. One officer finally caught the creature using a catch pole to push it back into POKE, POKE: A police officer restrains a racoon. Men are bigger liars than women Men are more dishonest than women, a recent poll has revealed. While women may sometimes lie to spare someone’s feelings, men tend to hide the truth to save them money or win an argument. In a study that included thousands of adults of different genders, socio economic classes, races and religions, researchers found that the average man either lies, or avoids having to tell the truth four times a week. On the other hand, women stretch the truth three times a week. Men are also more likely to be deceitful to get someone else out of trouble, get them something they want or make them sound more interesting or better than they really are. “The most common lie
is saying ‘I’m fine’ when you are upset,” said a spokesman for comparison site, ‘PayingTooMuch’, which commissioned the study. “In second place is saying you like a gift, when you don’t, followed by hiding the truth over the cost of an item and lying about how ill you are.” Other lies include those relating to finances, keeping quiet when someone hands you excess change or complimenting food you don’t like. From the study, telling someone they look good in an outfit which doesn’t really suit them, also made it to a list of top 10 lies people tell. The study found that 60 per cent of people consider themselves to be ‘very’ honest, with another 38 per cent saying they ‘usually’ tell the truth.

Nurses union puts off strike as talks begin
The Kenya National Union of Nurses has postponed a national strike, which would have started today. The union’s national executive committee met in Nairobi yesterday and agreed to extend the strike notice by 60 days to give more room for consultations with stakeholders. “The union urges all its
members to be patient and allow for dialogue to take place under a conducive and non-intimidating environment,” secretary general Seth Panyako said. The nurses demand immediate hiring of all contracted employees and the implementation of a Collective Bargaining Agreement. Panyako, had said over the
weekend that if by the expiry of 30 days, employees on temporary terms had not been absorbed and the collective bargaining agreement signed, then they would have no option but to down their tools by Nov 22, 2014. An estimated 4,700 nurses in the country are employed on contract.
United Nations, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and actor Leonardo di Caprio, were among thousands of individuals who joined public marches in cities around the world, calling for action on climate change last weekend. The People’s Climate March drew more than 310,000 people to New York this weekend, organizers said, tripling the original forecast. “Action on climate change is urgent. The more we delay, the more we will pay in lives and in money,” said Mood before the march. Ban, wearing a T-shirt that read “I’m for climate action” marched arm-inarm with British primatologist Jane Goodall and French Ecology Minister Segolene Royal. “This is the planet where our subsequent generations will live,” Ban told reporters. “There is no ‘Plan B,’ because we do not have ‘Planet B.’” The demonstration came ahead of a United Nations summit this week on climate change and coincided with more than 2,600 events planned in 150 countries. Organizers said the New York march was the city’s largest social demonstration in the last decade.

Somalia official says Al Shabaab surrendering arms to government Dozens of Al Shabaab militants have heeded the Somali government’s 45day ultimatum and amnesty offer and surrendered their arms to authorities, a government official has said. “We are receiving defectors on a daily basis since the president issued the amnesty,” National Security spokesman Mohamed Yusuf Osman told Anadolu Agency. “We are talking about a number of about 100 to 130 who have so far defected since the leader of the group Ahmed Godane was killed,” he said. The amnesty was announced by the president after the killing of the top
militant. Osman said most of those who have surrendered are from the newly-liberated regions of southern and central Somalia. Once controlling most of south and central Somalia, Al-Shabaab has recently lost ground to the Somali army and the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM). Late last month, the Somali government and the African peacekeepers launched a massive joint military operation – dubbed “Operation Indian Ocean” – against the militant group. The offensive has seen Al-Shabaab lose most of its strongholds.

Governor John Muruttu has asked the national government, non-governmental organisations, and well-wishers to move with speed to aid the more than 65,000 residents from starvation. “The County Steering Group Technical Committee has already carried out a food security assessment and the report indicates that the number
of people in dire need of relief food has gone up. I have also sent an alert to the national government for intervention,” Muruttu said. The governor attributed the food shortage to low harvests in the past season. He said persistent drought has led to low water levels, children dropping out of schools and death of livestock. Unilever launches training project for local film makers MONday, SEPTEmber 22, 2014
Consumer goods manufacturer, Unilever, has launched a training initiative programmes for Kenyan filmmakers. Under the Academy for African Filmmakers (AAF), the manufacturer plans to develop film making expertise among participants who will work on live Unilever briefs. Lucky trainees stand a chance of winning funding. Unilever has partnered with MOFILM, a global community of filmmakers that aims to inspire filmmakers and help further careers, to offer an intensive three-day course in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa in December. The academy is part of the Unilever
Foundry, a platform which the company launched in May to collaborate and experiment with the digital and creative community. Unilever’s CEO, East Africa and Emerging Markets, Marc Engel said Kenyan and East African film makers should take advantage and hone their film making skills. “Great talent abounds in this culturally diverse continent,” he said. “We are, however, yet to reach our full potential.” The training is open to aspiring filmmakers from across Africa aged between 16 and 30 years with technical proficiency in filmmaking. They should demonstrate a passion for film and
storytelling. “We’re seeking to nurture talent and give young Africans an opportunity and stage to tell the authentic story which underpins Unilever’s brands in Africa,” said Marc Mathieu, Senior Vice President for Global Marketing. Jeffrey Merrihue, CEO and Founder of MOFILM, said: “MOFILM had great success in 2013 in finding untapped African filmmaking talent. We visited many film schools and production houses, meeting hundreds of filmmakers and the efforts resulted in two filmmakers being celebrated at the International Festival of Creativity at Cannes.”

About 14 per cent of Kenya’s urban population own homes as the remaining 86 per cent pay rent. In a study that focused on Nairobi residents, researchers from Tegemeo Institute of Egerton University discovered that on average city dwellers pay about Sh7,900 a month for housing. The cost of renting a home has more than doubled in the past five years. As the cost of buying a house continues to rise, many urban dwellers are choosing to pay rent instead of taking home loans.

Software customers have shifted to cloud computing instead of paying licence fees to install programmes on machines kept in offices.

The wealthiest households have witnessed a three per cent drop in the number of rich people who buy houses. Kamau says the poorest households in Nairobi spend about Sh1,300 a month on rent. The wealthiest households spend an average of Sh30,700 a month in house rent, although some tenants in uptown suburbs may spend as much as Sh200,000 a month on townhouses. T he study also found an almost direct link between education and the amount of money spent on housing. Value addition brings banana joy to Kisii group A group of women in a savings group in Kisii have doubled their earnings by adding value to bananas. Started 15 years ago as a merry-go-round, the Kenyuni Women’s group watched as their bananas went to waste due to a glut in the market forcing them to sell their produce at throw-away prices. However, this all changed when one of them fronted the idea of extending the shelf lives of bananas by making various consumer products. Now, the group of 20 makes cakes, bread, biscuits, crisps, flour for ugali, porridge and banana jam
among other products from their crop. Due to a high demand of their products in the area, the group agreed that each member plants at least 30 new banana stems. Everline Onserio, the group’s leader says: “We have varieties which are only used for ripening and those for baking. Each member has planted some in her land to avoid a shortage.” She says when the crop is ready, it’s carefully harvested and treated with salt water so that they do not get dirty before they are transported to their ‘factory’ situated at Menyinkwa
buying centre, a kilometre away. The group has a strict record keeping tradition monitored by treasurer, Veronica Nafula, whom they sponsored to go for training to study financial management. “We keep records because we want to establish whether we are making progress or not. Initially when we didn’t have such records it was difficult for us to know the position of our business,” Nafula said. She said the group used get Sh299, 000 a year before they adopted value addition. Now they rake in Sh635, 000 annually.

Have the cake, and eat it One of the essential things on the wedding day is the cake. On the list of the important things it probably comes third after the wedding dress and the rings. Traditionally, the wedding cake was believed to bring good luck to all guests and the couple. Cutting it symbolises the first task the newlyweds execute together. The cake makes a statement by how good it looks and how great it tastes. For that matter, it is important that the couple get a cake that they will be proud of on their big day. First of all, they should try and get a good visual idea of what they want their cake to look like and the flavours they may choose to have in the cake. What the guests or immediate family prefer is not of consideration, so make it yours according to your liking. One of the first things that are noticed at a wedding reception besides the décor is the cake, make sure it fits the décor and your style of the
wedding. Secondly, book the cake baker early, four to six months in advance. Work within the budget and arrange for cake tasting to ensure that they get the right flavours. Do not even dare make the cake yourself. There is enough to worry about when planning the wedding and worrying about making the cake is something that should be left to someone else.
celebrity weddings are the most anticipated moments. Fans can never get enough of every little detail of the wedding - the color scheme, the number, and social statues of guests in attendance; the how many tiers the cake had, or the bride’s dress and how long was the train. The fans’ fascination with celebrity lives often pushes many to have their weddings in private. In 2008, Wyre had an invite-only wedding. The Nakupenda Pia singer, barred journalists from his wedding. People follow celebrity weddings because they want to imitate the fashion and the inspiration behind the décor.

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, the shiny it is the greater the joy. But here is the dilemma, do you do a huge proposal complete with fireworks or an intimate proposal with just the two of you and not a whole lot of people involved? First you have to consider

If she is somebody who will not mind it being billboard type proposal then go for it. For the sanity of the Earth, do not propose to her without a ring. Proposing without a ring is an all-time low. In the event you do not have the ring, push the proposal further till you get one.

Do soap operas capture the realities of love?
Soaps, especially Mexican ones, have intriguing love episodes. But other people feel they are based on ideal love, an aspect that raises the expectations of love in real life to unattainable standards. “We must learn to move in and enjoy our best characters, but come back to real life after the action. Stagnating in the soap mood is likely to bring conflict. When your partner does not meet your expectations which match those in the soap episodes, you feel they do not love you,” says Vivian Keroti, a keen Mexican soap follower. Soaps teach and inform. “Soaps teach you on how to understand your partner in many life set-ups. They also cue you on the turn of events in life you must prepare to meet in real life,” says Geoffrey Oburu, 23. For instance, Oburu says forcing love may not work despite frantic efforts to keep partners in relationships. He says love is natural and must be exchanged only for love. Ken Martim feels operas reveal hypocrisy that may be long hidden in relationships. But at times, they can ruin genuine marriages with abstract life.
Once a player, always one There are three key characteristics of a player. One, the player is handsome and women keep throwing themselves left, right, and centre at him. A player is a man who is terrified to his socks of commitment. Some men are always scared of meaningful relationships. They will always make sure a relationship does not last more than a few weeks or months. They prefer to seek out a number of partners because each person will provide a different challenge and characteristic the other one does not have. There are three key characteristics of a player. They are handsome and women keep throwing themselves left, right, and centre at them. Their biggest undoing is the ego because for as long as they can remember, they have been told they are handsome. They believe looks will get them anything they want. They may possess a range of charm they use to drive a girl’s pants off in a strike before moving to the next woman. The man may be extremely wealthy. Money is a woman’s magnet and the more one has the more women will hang around him. Most players have a feature or two of the above traits. When a man has all the

We exchanged numbers and started talking. We have hang out a couple of times and even made out on our last date. He is 25 years old but seems younger than that. The problem is I lied to him that I was in college.
Coincidentally he came to our school for teaching practice and was so petrified to see me there. It was so embarrassing that I didn’t know what to tell him. Since I’m a day scholar, I tried calling him but he is not picking. I think he is mad at me for lying to him. I’m afraid I will lose him because of this. Is there a chance I can salvage what we had?

three, he is a triple threat and nothing will stop him. The age old question, however is, can a player change? There have been endless debates on the topic, with people saying they can change while others hold opposite views. There is a popular saying to the effect that you can take the player out of the game, but you cannot take the game out of him. Players do change and sometimes they don’t. A player will meet his match at some point, a girl who calls him out on his crap and is not dazzled by his amazing face. When he meets such a girl, he will hang up his player boots and become dedicated to one. His player characteristics do not go away. However, he will reign them in because he wants to keep his lady. Women sometimes get into relationships with players thinking they can change them. The truth, however, is the exact opposite; you cannot change a player. So, it is difficult to know if a player will change or not. It will always depends on the player.

Divergent thinking is not wrong
Society has locked people into a common perspective of thinking and doing things. Anyone going against this common frame of reference is seen to be rebellious. Artists Nico and Vinz in their lyrics, Am I Wrong, ask why they should be seen to be on the wrong side of societal norms merely by thinking differently?
Doing things as society does them does not always mean it is the correct way. The majority may think those going against it are wrong. On the contrary, they can be right and society, wrong. They say their rebellion can be of benefit. They can be trying something different that may benefit society because they will
see where it does not. Rebellion can also add knowledge in adventuring, they say in their lyrics. Nico and Vinz say their imagination can give rise to viable ideas. They prefer to be harshly judged by the society instead of remaining on the wrong with everybody.

Voluntary programme will boost national integration
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s launch of the national volunteer programme is one of the laudable moves that will accelerate national integration (Uhuru launches graduate volunteer programme September 19, 2014).
We have had several interventions to boost cohesion but most of the have remained in Nairobi, hence less effective. An example is the national Cohesion and Integration Commission, formerly headed by Mzalendo Kibunjia.
In this programme the graduates will be sent to pats of the country other than where they come from. By so doing, they will learn to appreciate the locals, who they will be serving, and in turn the locals will appreciate them too for
example in culture, hence boosting appreciation of each other’s diversity. Marginalised areas that have lagged academically for lack of qualifierd teachers will not feel neglected. Locals will learn that
the people they have always despised can be helpful. Education is a key pillar of integration that will ensure Kenya remains united as we forge ahead towards making our country a haven of peace.

Wanyama strikes first EPL goal Victor Wanyama’s first Southampton goal proved enough to finally end the resistance of 10-man Swansea on Saturday as the visitors won 1-0 to go second in the Premier League. It looked as if Swansea, who had Wilfried Bony sent off in the 39th minute, would hold out for a point. But 10 minutes from time, midfielder Wanyama’s angled finish secured victory for the Saints and left the south coast club three points behind leaders Chelsea. Ivory Coast striker Bony was shown a first red card for a reckless tackle from behind on Saints defender Maya Yoshida. Southampton manager Ronald Koeman praised the spirit displayed by Wanyama,

Wenger: I never doubted Ozil
Wins for champs Gor and Sofapaka Gor Mahia reaffirmed their intent to retain the Kenyan Premier League title with a hugely deserved 2-0 win over Chemelil Sugar on Saturday at City Stadium. Danny Sserunkuma scored the two goals to hand new Coach Frank Nuttall, his first win with reigning champions. The coach is calling upon his players to maintain the same spirit in the remaining matches. “It’s absolutely delightful for everyone in the club to pick all three points. The
players were fantastic today and it’s a good feeling to win this match,” said Nuttal whose side is top of the table with just six matches remaining. Tusker had blown their chance of going top 24 hours earlier with a 1-1 draw against battling Nairobi City Star while Sofapaka FC stayed within touching distance of Gor, thanks to a 1-0 victory over Muhoroni Youth at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos. The match winner was scored by Clifford Miheso
10 minutes after the break to move Sofapaka to 46 points one less of Gor. AFC Leopards survived a major scare when they clawed back a two-goal deficit to claim a 2-2 draw with KCB while Bandari also settled for a 1-1 draw with Western Stima in Mombasa. In Nakuru, Ulinzi Stars ended a two-match winless streak with a 2-0 win over Top Fry All Stars at Afraha Stadium. Evans Amuoka and John Nairuka scored a goal each for the soldiers who
drew 0-0 with Gor Mahia and lost 0-1 to KCB in their previous fixtures. The outcome dealt another blow to the struggling Top Fry’s hopes of surviving relegation. The day’s match between Thika United and Mathare United at Thika Municipal Stadium ended in a 1-1 draw. After a barren first half, Mathare drew first blood courtesy of Robinson Kamura whose goal was however cancelled out by Michael Olunga’s strike, fifteen minutes to the end of the match.

Arsene Wenger insists he never thought about dropping Mesut Ozil after the Germany midfielder finally delivered a dominant display in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory against Aston Villa on Saturday. Ozil produced a fine finish to open the scoring from Danny Welbeck’s pass and then the England striker scored his first Arsenal goal two minutes later after his team-mate had returned the favour. Aly Cissokho’s own goal made it three goals in four minutes for the rampant Gunners, but it was the influential Ozil who stole the spotlight at the end of a week in which Wenger had to field questions about the former Real Madrid star’s poor form following a 2-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. Ozil has been well below his best for much of his first year with Arsenal following his club record Sh5.78 billion switch from Real, but Gunners boss Wenger was adamant he was always certain the playmaker would come good. “I never considered leaving Ozil out,” said Wenger, as Arsenal won for only the second time in the Premier League this season. “I have many offensive players and we look to always find the right balance, it’s not always easy. I gave (Alexis) Sanchez a rest as he has played many games. “We have plenty of experienced players who do not play at the moment who are at top quality. “But it was the point where we had to show Ozil confidence was there. He showed as well he can perform when under scrutiny. “It’s always a very sensitive point if you leave them out, you never know how they will respond. Ozil wants to play in the middle but I have 10 others who want to play there.”
Hamilton leads drivers championship table after Singapore victory Lewis Hamilton regained the Formula One drivers’ world championship lead on Sunday with victory in the Singapore Grand Prix after his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg retired with electronic problems. The 29-year-old Briton led from pole and dominated
the 61-lap race before a lengthy Safety Car interruption reduced his lead and forced him to attack again in the closing stages when he passed Sebastian Vettel to win. It was Hamilton’s 29thcareer win, his seventh this year and his second in Singapore, ending four-time
champion Vettel’s run of three straight wins on the south-east Asian street circuit. Hamilton came home 13.534 seconds ahead of Vettel, with Daniel Ricciardo third in the second Red Bull ahead of Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and Felipe Massa of Williams. He moves up
to 241 points, three clear of Rosberg, with five races remaining in one of the most tense and closely-fought championships of recent years. “I had a dream this would happen last night,” said Hamilton. “Things have changed for me absolutely. I looked for a clean weekend
and this was it. We always strive to get both cars 1-2 that was our goal, so things still to work on.” Rosberg turned up for the Marina Bay street circuit night race 22 points clear of Hamilton. But the German endured a wretched evening, his car failing to set off for the
warm-up lap from second on the grid. He eventually started from the pitlane, in an under-performing car with restricted electronic programmes available. By lap five, he had climbed to 20th while Hamilton was controlling a lead of 2.3 seconds ahead of Vettel.

Emotional Lampard stuns his former club as Leicester humiliate van Gaal An emotional Frank Lampard rescued a point for champions Manchester City against former club Chelsea on Sunday while Manchester United gave up a 3-1 lead to slump to a shock 5-3 defeat at Leicester. Lampard’s equaliser ensured a 1-1 draw against the Premier League leaders who lost their perfect start to the league season but still moved three points clear of second-placed Southampton. It seemed Jose Mourinho’s side were set for a fifth straight league win when Andre Schurrle put them ahead in the 71st minute, shortly after City had been reduced to 10 men by the sending off of defender Pablo Zabaleta. But former Chelsea great Lampard, only playing for City after being loaned to them by New York City, the club he left for at the end of last season, drew the hosts level five minutes from time following a typically late run into the box. The drama at Eastlands was nothing compared to events earlier in the day at Leicester’s King Power Stadium. It seemed big-spenders United were on course for their first competitive
loanee Chicharito Hernández. Ronaldo’s header put Madrid ahead and James confirmed the lead. The match was pretty much over at halftime, with Real Madrid leading 3-0, but Deportivo scored from the penalty spot shortly after to get on the board. Ancelotti inserted Illarramendi, Isco and Chicharito, and all three allowed Real Madrid to enjoy the rest of the game and score five more goals. Cristiano Ronaldo completed his first hattrick of the season, while Bale and Chicharito both scored braces. Bilbao struggled against Shakhtar but managed a point.
Real Madrid earned an easy 8-2 win at Riazor while Málaga scored the equaliser against Espanyol in added time. Atlético Madrid and Athletic Bilbao couldn’t win home matches against against Celta and Granada, making the European and title races even more interesting. Lionel Messi inspired Barcelona to a crushing 5-0 victory over Levante as Luis Enrique’s team continued their perfect start to the season. The comfortable win for Ancelotti’s men featured some beautiful goals scored by Cristiano Ronaldo, James Rodríguez, Gareth Bale and Manchester United
away victory under Louis van Gaal after goals by Robin van Persie, Angel di Maria and Ander Herrera left them 3-1 up with just over 30 minutes remaining. But a controversial penalty, converted by David Nugent, reduced the Foxes’ deficit to 3-2 after they had got on the scoresheet through Leonardo Ulloa. Two minutes after Nugent’s penalty,
Esteban Cambiasso drew Leicester level at 3-3 before Jamie Vardy, given time and space, made it 4-3 in the 79th minute. Four minutes later, Ulloa made the game safe for promoted Leicester when, after United’s Tyler Blackett had been sent off for bringing down Vardy in the box, the striker scored his second goal and Leicester’s fifth from the penalty spot.

Police, Scorpions in key hockey league victories Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Premier League defending champions Kenya Police and Strathmore University Scorpions registered crucial wins in respective categories at the City Park, Nairobi, on Sunday. Police registered a 5-0 win against Nakuru Sikh, while Strathmore Scorpions whitewashed Multimedia University 14-1 in the only women’s match of the weekend. It was Police’s first victory of the season after they fell 1-0 to Greensharks in their opener. Police keeper James Kayieko said winning was crucial after the team lost in an earlier match against Sharks. “There was a number of changes in the manner we played, if you look at the gaols we scored, most of them came from set pieces.... the forwards were effective in conversion,” said the keeper. Police roared off to an attacking display, and almost went up in the first minute when Moses Cheplaiti almost converted a corner.
In the 15th minute, Cheplaiti converted a short corner to take the lead. Nakuru almost levelled the score 11 minutes later after Billy Ochieng sent a cross to Dennis Barasa which he shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat. The teams settled 1-0 at half time. Police midfielder Willis Okeyo made it two in the 46th minute after striking the ball home past Nakuru goalkeeper Dennis Mageto. Two minutes later, defender Brian Saina made it three for the law enforcers. The fourth goal came in the 52nd through Felix Okoth. Okeyo was at it again three minutes later when he blast past Mageto to cement the victory. Gilly Okumu scored four goals as Strathmore floored Multimedia 14-1. Doreen Hongo scored a hattrick while Damaris Namulanda hit a brace. In another game, Wazalendo beat Mvita XI 3-1 in Mombasa.
Cash woes lock Rwanda out of Safari Sevens tourney
Financially strained Rwanda’s Silverbacks will not honour its invitation to this year’s Safaricom Safari Sevens. But the country will be represented by the under-19 side at the tournament to be
held from September 26-28 at Kasarani. Rwanda was officially invited by the Kenya Rugby Union. It had assembled a team of 30 players late in August to start preparations under Fijian
coach Ismail Mocevakaca. The Silverbacks would have made the third appearance at the tournament. “We have to withdraw from the tournament due to financial constraints,”
Rwanda Rugby Federation president Adams Juma said. “Every international tournament you participate in, you get experience, which is good for a country like Rwanda which is still
growing in the sport.” Adams will lead the under-19 side and has named 14 players who will travel to Nairobi on Wednesday. The team finished third last year. It includes Ombeni
Iradukunda, David Ujeneza, Patrick Ikorukwishaka and Robert Mugisha. Rwanda is among ten teams that have confirmed participation in the under-19 category.

Injury forces Li Na to retirement Recurring knee injury has forced Li Na, 32, to retire from tennis. The Chinese two-time Grand Slam winner known for her humour on and off the courts wrote an open letter in the social media networks on Friday prior to her official press announcement on Sunday. Her retirement brings the curtains down on the most successful player from Asia who defied all odds to win the 2011 French Open and later reached the 2011 Australian Open which she eventually won in January this year. In the open letter, Li Na explained the reasons for her retirement. “Most people in the tennis world know that my career has been marked by my troubled right knee. After four knee surgeries and hundreds of shots injected into my knee weekly to alleviate swelling and pain, my body is begging me to stop the pounding. After a few weeks of post-surgery recovery, I tried to go through all the necessary steps to get back on the court. While I’ve come back from surgery in the past, this time it felt different. One of my goals was to recover as fast as I could in order to be ready for the first WTA tournament in my hometown. As hard as I tried to get back to being 100 percent, my body kept telling me that, at 32, I will not be able to compete at the top level ever again. The sport is just too competitive, too good, to not be 100 percent.” The player looked back at her achievements and is full of pride. “What I’ve accomplished for myself is beyond my wildest dreams. What I accomplished for my country is one of my most proud achievements.”

world 10,000m title in 2009 and taking three successive silver medals at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships between 2009 and 2011, Masai’s progress has stalled. “I had a major calf injury and had to take a long rest of two months in the beginning of this year. Snce then I’m building up again.” After passing 10km in 32:58 and 15km in 49:30, Masai finished in 53:09. Gelana, who is preparing for the Yokohama Women’s Marathon in November, was a distant second in 53:57. Passing 5km in 14:02 and 10km in 28:26, the pace was solid as defending champion Nguse Amlosom of Eritrea and Mwangangi, tried to keep up with the two youngsters.
