Kenyatta to address summit WEDNESday, September 24, 2014
From Page 1 Only yesterday, he chaired the climax session of the Climate Summit 2014. The session, which focused on energy, was attended by invited Heads of State and Government and world leaders in finance, business, and civil society. Besides chairing the energy session of the Climate Summit, President Kenyatta also hosted a high-level meeting at the UN to marshal governments to use domestic funding to support health systems. The meeting on health was
attended by leaders from government, finance, universities, medical services and civil society. He also delivered a speech at the beginning of the Climate Summit in which he called for bold actions by governments to provide affordable, sustained and modern energy. At the end of the summit, he gave another speech in which he called for scaled up international cooperation to reduce Green House Gas emissions. At the energy summit, which he co-chaired together with the
Prime Minister of Denmark Helle Thorning-Schmidt, President Kenyatta called for more emphasis on a global shift towards the use of renewable energy. “The challenge has moved on, from whether renewable energy can power modern lifestyles at a reasonable cost — which we now know it can — to how best to finance and accelerate its deployment to increase the share of renewables in the energy mix,” he said. President Kenyatta said he was happy that many African countries
are already taking strong action to invest in renewable energy to address the power deficit in the continent. He then outlined how Kenya has deployed green power making it a leader in renewable energy. “I am happy to report that on Kenya’s grid today, we have over 70 per cent renewable energy,” he said. Kenya was the first country in Africa to adopt geothermal power in 1956 and is home to the OlKaria II, the largest geothermal power plant on the continent. The renewable energy sector has
been opened to private operators, who now run geothermal power plants and are investing in wind farms. The President encouraged African countries to continue opening their energy sectors to private operators to attract further investments. “We need to turn the challenges of climate change into investment opportunities for present and future generations,” he said. President Kenyatta also used the climate change session to announce the launch of the Africa Clean Energy Corridor (ACEC).
this is how we do it: Farmers from Malawi attend a training session at a Kenyan dairy farm during a recent trip to the country. The visitors returned home full of praise for Kenya as a dairy farming powerhouse.
Kenya dairy farmers’ progress excites Malawi colleagues
A group of 12 farmers from Malawi say they have acquired exciting farming knowledge from a week-long tour of Kenya. Kingston Mame, an official of Malawi’s Local Development Fund, which sponsored the trip, said the group was exposed to world class training on rearing and management of dairy animals. “Kenya is a rated high globally among the areas where dairy
farming is advanced and that is why we chose it for our trip,” said Mame. “During the trip, we learnt that by joining associations, individual farmers could easily produce up to 30 litres of milk per day, with the association collaboratively selling more than 2000 litres daily,” he said. The trip was organised by a Malawian member of parliament Doreen Chiwanda. Kenya’s dairy
sector is gradually growing into a farming powerhouse in the region. The sector is largely spearheaded by a few players, notably Brookside Dairy Limited and state-owned Kenya Cooperative Creameries. Research by Standard Investment Bank said Brookside had sales of about Sh15.4 billion in 2013. The firm has the largest milk collection network in East Africa with over 140,000 farmers and
a distribution network of more than 200,000 outlets in East Africa. Last year, Brookside acquired a 20 per cent stake in an Ethiopian dairy firm to further expand its reach beyond Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda where it operates. Nigeria’s Dangote Group is set to open a multi-billion dairy powder milk plant in Kenya to serve export markets.
Govt, Boko Haram discuss realease of kidnapped pupils Nigerian government officials and the International Committee of the Red Cross have been holding talks with Boko Haram on how to swap imprisoned members of the terrorist group. The group is expected to, in turn, release more than 200 school girls kidnapped in April, those privy to the talks have revealed. The officials met four times in mid-August
with two senior members of Boko Haram in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. The swap would involve the release of 30 Boko Haram commanders in the custody of the Nigerian government, sources who spoke to CNN on condition of anonymity said. Boko Haram submitted a list with the names of 30 members who were either convicted or awaiting trial on terror offenses.
“The two Boko Haram negotiators assured the ICRC and government negotiators that the girls were never raped, were never used as sex slaves and were never sexually assaulted,” said the source, who attended the discussions. The terrorists abducted an estimated 276 girls in April from a boarding school in Chibok in northeastern Nigeria. Dozens fled but more than 200 are still missing.
Boko Haram has expressed willingness for a swap with ICRC at an undisclosed location, the source said. But there were disagreements on some terms, including the number of girls involved in the swap. Boko Haram had insisted on an even swap -- 30 girls for the 30 commanders -- but the government refused, according to the source.

Uhuru to rich states: Lead climate war,
A variety of wild animal respond to crying babies Scientists have discovered that a number of animals will respond to the cries of a baby in the same way a human adult would. Previous studies have found that humans react to the distress calls of their own children, but also respond to the cries of infant pets such as dogs and cats. The same response has been found among domestic dogs, which have been known to react to the cries of new-born humans. However, in both instances, it was assumed this was as a result of the domestication of these animals. To see if it was the same with wild animals, Susan Lingle of the University of Winnipeg, Canada and Tobias Riede from Midwestern University in Glendale, in the US, recorded the cries of various infant mammals. These included humans, wild cats, dogs, sea creatures, domestic cats, wild dogs, bats among others. “Our results suggest that infant distress calls essential for a response by caregivers, and a caregiver’s sensitivity to these calls, may be shared across diverse mammals,” said Lingle.
President Uhuru Kenyatta today asked the developed world to take the lead in controlling climate change. At the same time, the President urged developing countries to increase voluntary efforts to manage the environment. The President was speaking at the opening of the Climate Summit 2014 at the United Nations headquarters that preceded the 69th UN General Assembly that begins tomorrow. The summit has been called to galvanise climate action all over the world. Uhuru said climate change is a universal threat and Kenya was vulnerable to the adverse weather effects.

Travellers ignore PSV rules as road accidents toll rises The filthy state of seat belts in most public transport vehicles has been advanced as a key reason why passengers do not buckle up. The excuses are floated by travellers even as accidents continue to mount while avoidable injuries continue to take a toll on passengers. Only last month, a Citi Hoppa bus plying the Kawangware-City centre route overturned along Valley Road in Nairobi, leaving many injured. Data shows that Public Service Vehicles are involved in majority of accidents that result in injuries. PSV accidents, police data shows, account for up to 62 per cent. A report by the Road Safety Network of Kenya on Road Traffic Accident (RTA) shows that deaths resulting from vehicle to pedestrian collisions make up for 24 per cent. trouble with the law. Nairobi traffic police boss Edward Mwamburi says officers are doing their best to ensure passengers follow the rule to the letter. “Those found not adhering to the rule will be arrested and arraigned in court,” he says. Culprits charged will part with a minimum of Sh5, 000, while the driver and touts in contempt of the law are fined not less than Sh10, 000. Mwamburi also says the initiative needs to be pushed a notch higher by safety campaigns and awareness to enlighten the public. “My team is collaborating with the National Transport and Safety Authority to launch an awareness initiative that will encourage safety on our roads. “Some seat belts are so dirty and filthy that I cannot touch them because they would ruin my clothes,” says Hellen Mwambia.
A suspected thug was this morning shot dead in a botched robbery attack at Soweto area, Kayole, in Nairobi. An accomplice was arrested in the 3 am incident during an attack and robbery of pedestrians going to a local market. Police say the suspects are part of a larger gang that has been terrorising and robbing residents of valuables. The group belong to a criminal group called Gaza that has been terrorising locals in the past months. A special police squad has been deployed to track down the suspected gangsters. The killing brings to two the number of thugs killed on Tuesday night. One had been killed and a ceska pistol recovered at Marurui area, Nairobi. Three of his suspected accomplices escaped on foot. Police say they also recovered a car the men were using when they were confronted along the Nothern Bypass. The body was later moved to the mortuary as the hunt on the other suspects continues.
Westgate terror attack suspects fail to take plea The trial of four suspects charged with the September 21, 2013 terror attack at the Westgate mall on Wednesday failed to take a plea after prosecution told the court they were “on bed rest.” State Prosecutor Mungai Warui said the suspects had been put on extended bed rest by Kamiti Maximum Prison medical officers after a clash with warders. They were not in a position to appear in court, Warui said. “We visited the prison on September 17 and were informed they would be on extended bed rest for eight days,” Warui told Principal Magistrate Helena Nderitu. Mwita Chacha, the defence counsel for the first and fourth accused, challenged the claim, saying their families had seen them in the court’s basement holding cells. One of his other clients had ridden on the bus to the Milimani Law Courts with them. “The prison authorities are trying to hide them,” he told the magistrate. Nderitu took a trip to the holding cells to ascertain the claim. “The magistrate was very disappointed,” Chacha later told reporters outside the holding cells. “They are in the basement but
we didn’t see any beds.” Chacha claimed the prison authorities had “visited terror” on the four suspects on August 27 without provocation and said the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights was investigating the matter. “You should see them, they’re all bandaged up and that is why the prison authorities are trying to keep them out of open court,” he said. But the authorities, he acknowledged, had a different version of events. Warui said the suspects had refused to wear uniforms and fought their warders in defiance. “They even injured a prisons officer,” he said. Nderitu ordered that the matter come up for mention on October 3. Mohamed Abdi, Liban Omar, Adan Dheq and Hussein Hassan are facing charges of offering support to the four gunmen who stormed the Westgate mall a year ago taking 67 lives. Up to 40 witnesses have testified against the accused with 20 more expected to take the stand.

120 reported killed in USled strikes on IS jihadists
At least 120 jihadists were killed in Syria after the US led other nations in launching airstrikes against the so called Islamic State militants with Pentagon announcing their readiness for a long campaign against the extremist fighters. Activists say at least 70 IS militants and 50 other al-Qaeda-linked fighters were killed in the strikes. Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain based monitoring group, said eight civilians, among them three children, were also killed in US strikes in the west of northern Aleppo
province. Another 300 people were injured in the strikes with close to 100 said to be in serious condition. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, speaking in Washington, said the air strikes in Syria had successfully degraded IS’s capabilities. “We think we have hit what we were aiming at,” he said. The airstrikes might have taken a toll on another terror group with al Qaedalinked al-Nusra Front claiming their leader was also killed. A statement released by the group identified the
leader as Abu Yousef al-Turki, also known as “The Turk.” The al-Nusra statement posted on Twitter was accompanied by a so-called proof of death, displaying a photograph of the former fighter. These developments emerged as America talked tough on the Islamic militants. The US, which is already leading a coalition of about 50 nations in a series of airstrikes against the militants, has expanded its targets to yet another terrorist organization, the Khorasan

The plots against the US were discovered by the intelligence community in the past week, an intelligence source said.
WHO: Ebola killed more than reported The death toll from the Ebola epidemic in West Africa could be higher than the 2,800 earlier reported, a new survey says. New figures suggest 70 per cent of those infected with the virus in West Africa have died, higher than previously reported, says the World Health Organization. The UN agency also warned that infections from the virus will treble to 20,000 by November if efforts to tackle the outbreak are not stepped up. In the worst case scenario, cases could reach 1.4 million in January.

Monetary system spares traders high exchange tax WEDNESday, September 24, 2014
Traders in the East African region can now pay for goods and services using any of the three currencies. The business people will not be required to change into a customer’s preferred mode of payment thanks to the East Africa Payment System (EAPS). The EAPS is an on-the-spot payment system that links the three countries’ central banks. The system allows for the movement of cash between various banks and branches. It is increasingly being used in the region in place of cheques. The only difference is that it supports all currencies and has cross-border functionality, making transactions faster and less costly. It saves traders the burden of changing currencies which is costly and time consuming. The EAPS became operational three months ago and has breathed a fresh lease of life to cross-border investments, especially among smaller traders who are shielded from high currency exchange costs. Gladys Mukei, a second-hand clothes dealer at Gikomba market, in Nairobi, sources most of her wares from Uganda. She has been experiencing the

burden of currency exchange cost for the past five years. Changing money through the Western Union has been an “expensive” affair. “It is even twice as expensive when you exchange money at the border,” Mukei says. Money merchants charge exorbitant fees, she says. Francis Mukabane, a financial analyst and lecturer at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies, says EAPS is a
“worthy baby step” towards achieving a single currency. He says the move holds fortunes especially for small-scale enterprises since it reduces the cost of doing business. Anthony Chengo, who operates electronic shops in Nairobi and Arusha, is optimistic that lenient economic policies in the region will encourage citizens to engage in business and solve the high unemployment quagmire.
Whistle-blower wins Sh2.7b reward from US government
A whistle-blower living outside US has received a $30 million (Sh2.7 billion) award from the government. The award was given to an anonymous confidant by US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This is the largest payment ever to a whistle-blower by regulators. The SEC said the whistleblower provided key information that helped the agency uncover a “difficult to detect” fraud. US law states that the identity of the whistle-blower must be kept secret. “This award of more than $30 million shows the international breadth of our whistle-blower programme as we effectively utilise valuable tips from anyone, anywhere to bring wrongdoers to justice,” Sean McKessy, Chief of the SEC’s whistle-blower office, said in a statement. “Whistle-blowers from all over the world should feel

Consumer rights Communications Authority launches regional ICT platform The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has launched regional ICT consumer forums that raises consumer awareness on rights and responsibilities on ICT services. The Kikao Kikuu (key conference), will create a platform for dialogue and allow interaction between the authority and ICT service providers. The forums that kicked off in Machakos County last week will work closely with key opinion leaders and administrators. It will serve as a principal source of credible and accurate information on ICT, Director General Francis Wangusi said. He said the forums will provide a direct feedback mechanism from consumers and allow Kenyans to voice views on services
they receive from the sector. Kenyans lack an official platform to address issues within the sector and many have raised concern on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter because mechanisms such as Kikao Kikuu did not exist before. Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua said: “As a county, we are ready to work together with the Communications Authority of Kenya in further harnessing the potential of ICTs.” “We believe ICTs will help us leapfrog economic and social developments of our region and better the living standards of our people,” he said. Nakuru and Nairobi will host the next meetings in coming weeks.

Deepa contract doubles Bomet famers potato production Potato farmers in the Bomet area are doubling their earnings by contracting their services to Deepa Industries Limited, a snack making company. Before the contract model was adopted Mr. Nilesh Shah, the chairman of Deepa Industries, said the company was having a difficulties finding enough potatoes due to an imbalance in their supply chain. “Potatoes are the primary ingredient in our snacks. Frequent shortages and the high prices had really pushed up the costs of production,” he recalled. “We had reached a stage
where we weren’t getting enough potatoes and to solve this problem we decided to invest in the supply of the crop.” The idea of a potato growers’ scheme in Bomet soon came into effect. Deepa currently provides farmers in the scheme with supplies like fertilisers, potato seeds, and weed killers. This has led to increased production. The farmers then sell their potatoes to the company. “This ensures a steady supply of quality potatoes for us and in the process we’re helping farmers earn good income from their crop,”
said Mr Shah. The company’s goal is to get at least half of its potato requirements from the out growers scheme. By selling their stock to Deepa, the farmers are earning twice as much as they would from other private buyers. Each farmer can grow between 8 to 10 bags of potatoes per acre with each bag selling at more than Sh2, 000, the average price in many parts of the country. The deal has been driven by a rapid increase in sales for Deepa, which have been growing at the rate of 30 per cent a year.

Kenya apple export market is severely under-supplied Apple farming in Kenya has been picking up over the past few years as growers adopt new farming methods to meet a rising demand for the famous fruit. Although apple grafting has helped local farmers increase their yield, Kenya’s apple export market is severely undersupplied. While farmers in Nyeri county make as much as Sh50, 000 from each grafted apple tree, they only sell their produce to local processors. Kenya’s annual produce of 779 tonnes of apples places 88th on a list of 93 apple-producing countries across the world.
China, the world’s leading apple producer, harvests close to 36 million tonnes a year while the US comes second, producing about 4 million tonnes. Despite its minimal production numbers, Kenya is the only East African country to make it onto the list. However, the country still has to import apples from other countries like South Africa to meet a demand that local farmers cannot. “South African businesses never miss any opportunity to boost growth of intra-Africa trade,” said Elizabeth Thabethe, South Africa’s Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry in an earlier statement.

Slipcovers No matter how white or clean and elegant your furniture may look, an ugly spot will invite a visitor’s eye, and they may not appreciate the entire beauty.
Tired, outdated and stained furniture may be embarrassing to you when you do not have the money for a makeover. Slipcovers can save you this pain. They are removable clothing or jackets that cover furniture. Covering your chairs, tables, sofas, among other items in your living room breathes flowery freshness. This happens because they are available in multiple colours, patterns and materials. They also allow you to buy diverse sets that

you can alternate as you desire because they are not permanent. This makes slipcovers a costeffective ways of changing the face of your home any time you wish since you will only change the patterns or colours or shape, not the entire furniture each time or at one go. Spillages and stains by pets and children are common in homes. If the stain is already there, you can cover it with this material; if not, the material will get stained and spare the sofa fabric the
unsightly blemishes. No matter how white or clean and elegant your furniture may look, an ugly spot will invite a visitor’s eye, and they may not appreciate the entire beauty. Buying your furniture at different time and from different supplies may cause disharmony in both form and décor. Borrowing extra tables and chairs for your party time may be another source of décor disharmony. Slipcovers bring this much needed harmony via the same shade or pattern.

Find the right filler to plug those cracks Adverse environmental conditions or uneven drying may cause wall to crack and leave unpleasant dents on your final paintjob. You don’t pull down walls merely because they have superficial cracks, you fill the cracks. But how do you fil them? Various materials can be inserted into the crevices to bring them to the original level of the wall for a perfect paintjob. This will not only make your job neat, but also professional even if you are not a paint expert. If you have to do it yourself, buy a ready concoction that you will only fill with a scalpel or

trimming knife. You can also buy it for your paint man to do the mixing for you. It is advisable to overfill the crack. This will give room for uniform flat surface once the material dries. This will save you depressions after your paintjob. A professional advisor may help you in choosing the best filler. Paper sanding removes the extra filler. It restores it to the original level if the dry matter was past the standard. Sanding is the trimmer. But remember to wipe the spots you sanded with a wet cloth to remove dust particles, which are likely to make the surface rough after painting.

Store 66 launched with Sharon Mundia as brand ambassador Fashion outlet Store 66 was launched last weekend and brand ambassadors named, among them Sharon Mundia, an awardwinning lifestyle blogger. She started off as a fashion writer, with her blog, This Is Ess, gradually growing into a national brand. It all started in January 2012. With her bachelor’s degree in Marketing Management from the Monash University in South Africa, she began blogging as a hobby, and over time, with increased leadership, she managed to turn it into a successful brand. Her hobbies and passion in travel, life, food, beauty and fashion seemed to interlock
seamlessly. At 25, Sharon eems to have perfectly mastered the science of social capital and the art of association, effortlessly. She says this selfawareness is what lies at the heart of her fashion and lifestyle brand. It is personal to her and she has proven this by turning down offers to work with brands that she feels do not relate to her own brand and/or style. She selects pieces that reflect her personal styleauthenticity is what she aims for. Sharon says she speaks for the young women and acknowledges that she is lucky to be doing what she loves and at the same time, to be inspiring young women. “What I have come to realize is that fashion isn’t just about being trendy and cute; it’s about expressing your character, building your confidence and ultimately celebrating yourself,” she adds. Her hope for the future is to see her brand grow into a successful international fashion entity. Her audience, she states, usually comprises of young hardworking career women with a bit of spending power.

Eyeball jewellery the new craze A new fashion trend has emerged in Europe known as extra ocular implant in other words, eyeball jewellery. It is a cosmetic implant whereby a tiny piece of decorative jewellery is implanted within the conjunctiva (clear part of the eye) human eye. Unlike sub dermal implants and other body modification procedures, it is performed by a licensed ophthalmologist only. When performing the procedure, both eyes are numbed with anaesthetic drops and then a speculum is used to keep them open to prevent the client from blinking. A small incision is then made between the sclera (white part of your eye) and the conjunctiva to make room for the piece of jewellery. Using forceps a tiny flat stud is positioned into the eye. It is positioned according to the client’s liking. Other than it being a unique body modification, it’s very risky.

The year is 1912 when villagers at Sussex in UK gather in a church yard on the night they believe ghosts of those who will die in the coming year are to appear. Standing alone is the 22 yearold local Taxidermist’s daughter, Connie Gifford. She lives with the father in a decaying house. The structure contains all that is left of her father’s famous museum of taxidermy. The museum has been closed. Conni’s father does not like discussing what led to the closure of the museum. And following an accident, Connie cannot remember anything. The stuffed animals that used to grace people’s houses have gone out of fashion and nobody wants them anymore. This has left Connie’s father disgraced and bitter.

As the church bell rings, a woman’s neck is sliced off and no one knows who did it. Connie struggles to find out who is responsible for the murder and why the incident triggers memories of life before the accident.
National and county government squabbles must not injure service delivery The national government’s intervention to pay trainee doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital saved a situation that could have run out of hand (national government pay wages for 314 graduates at KNH).
Students are entitled to payment, but involving them in financial squabbles between the national and the county government will leave them suffering financially. Withdrawal of their much
needed service could have thrown the health sector into jeopardy and ridicule. The trainee doctors, in the country’s largest referral hospital, are gaining skills at the same time filling the gaps of
inadequacy of human resource. We do not want to see patient dying while in hospitals because the two levels of government cannot agree on who should play which role. Nairobi County Government
refusal to pay the graduates may be understood, but not at the expense of the same citizens who must get well to pay taxes to the same county. They could have discussed it in private.

Who are the likely victims of KPL chop?
With champions Gor Mahia in pole possession to defend the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title, which teams are relegation candidates with just six weeks to go? The battle to survive the relegation is intense as debutants Nakuru All Stars sitting at the basement on 16 points, four behind City Stars. KCB are just above the drop zone on 23. With only three wins this season, All Stars are two loses away from the axe as Leopards, Bandari, Western Stima, City Stars and KCB yet to come. After surviving the drop by a whisker in previous three seasons, City Stars need another miracle. Bankers look the most likely to secure survival after falling from fourth
spot last season to find themselves in the relegation mire for the first time since 2010. “A win against Gor will boost us a lot and I know we can do it because everybody wants to die for the team. We know our position so we just have to keep on soldiering on and hope we come out of that danger zone,” City Stars Nigerian head coach, Robinson Ndumbuisi, said ahead of their next fixture against the champions. Other games remaining for City Stars are Sony, Muhoroni, All Stars and Mathare United. Western Stima, Chemelil, Bandari, Sony Sugar and a final day engagement against survival rivals All Stars are still to come for KCB who would have moved further from the abyss had they held on in Mumias.

McIlroy, Poulter top US Ryder Cup target Top-ranked Rory McIlroy was a focus for Ryder Cup captains on arrival at Gleneagles, on Monday; Americans trying to defeat him and Europeans making sure he wakes up on time. US captain Tom Watson squarely made targets of McIlroy and Ian Poulter, the hero of Europe’s shocking 2012 record-setting comeback win at Medinah. “Whenever you beat the stud on the opposing team that
gives your team a boost,” Watson said when asked about McIlroy, clearly Europe’s star after winning the British Open and PGA Championship. But Poulter, 12-3 in Ryder Cup play, has been Europe’s top scorer in each of the past three Ryder Cups. At 38th, the Englishman is ranked second-lowest of any Cup player, but with seven wins in a row in Cup play, he might be the man Americans want
to beat the most. “Right now we have got a lot of players to look at,” Watson said. “But Poulter, I think Ian with his record, he’s an 80 percent victor over the series of matches he has played in. We would like to reduce that.” McIlroy, 4-3 with two halved in Cup play, overslept two years ago at Medinah and nearly missed his Sunday singles tee time.

Ricciardo queries Alonso moves Daniel Ricciardo has questioned whether Fernando Alonso should have given a place back to him, as well as team-mate Sebastian Vettel, at the start of the Singapore GP after the Ferrari driver cut the first corner. In a near carbon-copy of his launch from the left-hand side of the grid in last year’s race, Alonso was straight on the cars ahead of him on the grid at the lights, the Spaniard keeping to the outside on the approach to Turn One as the two Red Bulls battled for position on the inside.
However, although fractionally ahead of both Vettel and Ricciardo into the braking zone, Alonso locked up and went straight on across the copious run-off area that sits on the outside of Turns One and Two, returning to the track behind race leader Lewis Hamilton entering Turn Three. And although the Ferrari ceded position to Vettel soon afterwards, Alonso kept ahead of Ricciardo, who
was left to ponder afterwards whether he should have been given a place too. “It’s a tough one,” Ricciardo said. “Obviously he went a fair way off and gave it back to Seb. It’s like if he didn’t brake that late would he have been behind me? It’s a tough one. “The pros of these run-offs are that it’s safer, which is great, but the cons are people get away with mistakes and errors. If that was Monaco he would have been in the wall.” He had the option of
ducking out of the move because there’s run-off so in effect you could argue if obviously there was a brick wall there he wouldn’t have braked so late,” the 1996 World Champion Hill suggested. “This is one of the
problems with run-offs. I’m certain he would have tried to make it round the corner, but the question is whether or not by making run-offs driver get an unfair advantage in situations like that. I think he should have relinquished both of the positions, not just the one.” Both Vettel and Ricciardo finished ahead of Alonso at the chequered flag after opting to make one less pitstop than the Ferrari after the Spaniard had jumped the former in the second pitstops.

German official doubts Qatar will host World Cup Qatar will not host the World Cup in 2022, according to Theo Zwanziger, the German member on the executive committee of world football’s governing body FIFA. “I think that at the end of the day the 2022 World Cup will not take place in Qatar,” Zwanziger said in an interview with Sport Bild Plus. The former head of the German football federation (DFB) cited high summer temperatures as the reason Qatar would lose the right to host football’s global showpiece. “As Mr Zwanziger himself says, it’s his personal opinion,” a FIFA spokesman responded to AFP subsidiary
SID when asked about the German’s statement. Zwanziger said: “Doctors say, and I had insisted on this point in the protocol that they cannot guarantee that a World Cup can be held in summer in these conditions.” While Qatar has reportedly developed stadium cooling systems, Zwanziger said “the World Cup involves not only stadiums. There are fans coming from the four corners of the world who will be concerned by the heat”. “The first incident putting a life in danger will be subject to an investigation. And that, nobody in the FIFA Executive Committee would want to reply to.”
Owila on a mission for national team Nakuru RFC’s Martin Owila, is out to impress on his belated national team debut at this weekend’s Safaricom Safari Sevens and win a place in Paul Treu’s team for the 201415 HSBC World Series. Owila missed the 20th Commonwealth Games after failing to get his visa processed in time. The utility player says the annual domestic showpiece event will be the perfect platform for the new call-ups to fight for slots available in the team. Last week’s announcement by Kenya Rugby Union it was reviewing all player contracts will have inspired those on the fringes of the national side, including Owila, to eclipse established stars who protested the move. “The Commonwealth Games

Tusker drive woos soccer, rugby fans to terraces Tusker has launched a sport-driven Twende Game campaign that celebrates fans and drives support for football and rugby clubs. The company has enlisted the star power of Harambee Stars legends Joe Kadenge, George Sunguti, Josephat Murila, Tobias Ocholla and rugby star Lavin Asego for the campaign. The drive seeks to highlight the key milestones in the history of the two sports disciplines. “Tusker has played a major role in the development of football and rugby which have provided memorable moments for Kenyans. Our brand is synonymous with the good times these iconic players have given us and it’s only appropriate that they are now the face of Twende Game,” said Tusker Marketing Manager Antony Esyalai.
“Kenyans are passionate and emotional about sports. That is evident whenever Harambee Stars and Shujaa are on national duty. They are known to support their sides through good and lean times. However, we would like to see them take up a more proactive role in the development of sports,” said Esyalai. The campaign is designed to mobilise the fan base of the two disciplines to offer more direct support to respective clubs. “Through increased participation, we hope to inspire fans of local clubs to contribute in word and deed for the sole purpose of improving the quality of play on the field,” said Esyalai. The campaign will appeal to grassroots support which forms the bedrock of the fan movement across the country.
City skipper sees EPL three-way title charge
No escape: Raheem Sterling (left) during an EPL match against Manchester City. Manager Brendan Rodgers is unhappy over inconsistent results.
Liverpool boss’ concern over inconsistent results Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes “the weight of the jersey” is responsible for his side’s inconsistent results this term. After losing to Manchester City, Aston Villa and West Ham, last season’s Premier League runners-up sit 11th in the table, seven points behind leaders Chelsea. Liverpool spent over Sh14.6billion in the summer transfer market. But several of their new arrivals, including Mario Balotelli, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic, have struggled to make an immediate impact. Rodgers admits his signings are still adapting to life at Anfield and require time to settle. “We’ve conceded eight goals and the majority of those could have been avoided but what people probably don’t get is the pressure of playing for such a big club,”
WEDNESday, September 24, 2014
said Rogers. “The weight of the jersey is heavy for most players. Once you adapt to playing for Liverpool you become clearer in your thinking.” Rodgers has urged players to return to form quickly following their 3-1 fall at Upton Park on Saturday. “Our passing disappointed me.We played more long passes than West Ham and that is something you have not seen from us in over the two years. We need to get back to doing what we do best. “The 4-4-2 diamond worked well but it worked well with certain players and not at the weekend. Until I get all the players back that I know are multifunctional players, I’ll look at the strength of the players we do have fit. Hopefully that gives them confidence. Confidence has not been affected so far but if you don’t win games for too long it can be.”
Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany believes there will be three teams battling it out for the Premier League crown this season. Kompany is confident his side will be in the mix as the season draws to a close, along with Chelsea and Arsenal. The Citizens trail the table-topping Blues by five points, while Arsenal are four points shy of
Jose Mourinho’s men. Kompany feels there could well be a reshuffle at the top of the pile when the number of fixtures intensifies in December and January. “It is not fair to call it at the moment,” said Kompany. “We are not even close to Chelsea yet (in the table). Secondly, I have seen good things from Chelsea but I have
seen maybe better things from Arsenal so I guess it will all be about consistency and, with the Champions League, it will get messy around December. “Five points is nothing but Chelsea have five points more than us, it is as simple as that. “It will get messy in December and January as it always does – or at least the last six years I have been here it has.”
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said the league will “take a fresh look” at its domestic violence policies in light of the
issues surrounding the NFL. “We learn from other league’s experiences. We’re studying everything that’s been
happening in the NFL,” Silver said on Monday at a news conference to announce the league’s community service initiative in New York City in conjunction with the 2015 All-Star Game. “We’re working with our players’ association (and new executive director Michele Roberts). We’ve been talking for several weeks, and we’re going to take a fresh look at everything we do.” The NFL has drawn criticism for its handling of Ray Rice’s domestic violence case. Silver said the NBA can “learn from” the NFL’s missteps in the Rice case.

British tennis star Andy Murray admitted on Tuesday his Twitter message in support of Scottish independence had been out of character, but said he had no regrets about doing it. Murray gave the “Yes” campaign a boost on the eve of last Thursday’s referendum by tweeting: “Huge day for Scotland today! no campaign negativity last few days totally swayed my view on it. excited to see the outcome. lets do this!” Scottish voters ultimately voted against independence by a margin of 55 percent to 45 percent, but despite facing a backlash on social media, Murray said he stood by his decision to air his views. “I don’t regret giving an opinion,” the 27-year-old world number 11 told the BBC. “I think everyone should be allowed that. The way I did it, yeah, it wasn’t something I would do again. “I think it was a very emotional day for a lot of Scottish people and the whole country and the whole of the UK. It was a big day. “The way it was worded, the way I sent it, that’s not really in my character and I don’t normally do stuff like that.” Murray, who represented Great Britain in the Davis Cup and won gold and silver medals at the 2012 Olympics, was subjected to abuse from some Twitter users after declaring his support for independence. The 2013 Wimbledon champion was unable to vote in the referendum because he no longer lives in Scotland. He had previously been reluctant to back either side in the independence debate.
