Will Supreme Court spare analogue TVs? All TV viewers have trained their eyes on the Supreme Court as the fate of digital broadcast migration is delivered this afternoon. An earlier ruling by the Court of Appeal had extended the transition to digital broadcast to today before the Government challenged the decision at the Supreme Court. P2

Will analogue TVs survive? MONday, SEPTEmber 29, 2014

From Page 1 Viewers are keen on knowing whether analogue TV sets will be switched off when the Supreme Court delivers the judgement. A full bench of the highest court in the land was expected to give the verdict on the matter this morning before the event was postponed as Chief Justice Willy Mutunga was still busy overseeing the swearing-

in of new commissioners to the National Cohesion and Integration Commission. A consortium of media houses, including Nation Media Group, Standard Group and Royal Media which had sued the Government over the digital switch dates are waiting with bated breath to know if the Supreme Court will agree with the ruling of appellate judges

that directed that they be given a signal distribution licence. But it will come as a shocker to most viewers should the court rule that all analogue TV sets be switched off. However, it is highly likely that the court will grant an extension of the deadline which the Appeal court had put to the end of September. The international deadline for

digital migration is June 2015. “The digital migration date is still far ahead as per the set international deadline of June 2015 and it is our view that an additional six months will be adequate for all stakeholders to agree on an independent body to issue the digital licences,” Judges Roselyne Nambuye, David Maraga and Daniel Musinga ruled on March 27.

They said they could not understand why the Government was hurrying into migration in disregard of the Constitution and broadcast laws. Should the court rule in favour of digital migration, Kenyans will have to install set-top boxes on analogue TV sets in order to allow them access local channels.

Chinese rail line spares Donovan’s art gallery Seventy-four-year-old Alan Donovan, whose African Heritage House on Mombasa Road, was set for demolition to pave way for a rail line construction, may be spared the heartbreak. This is after he received confirmation from the rail line officials that the route will be altered. Donovan spent decades crisscrossing Africa as he collected indigenous art and handcrafts that fill his famous house that overlooks the Nairobi National Park. In January, reports the Los Angeles Times, three men walked onto his compound, one of whom was a Kenyan government soldier carrying an AK-47. The other two, he learned, represented the China Road and Bridge Corp, which is building a railway from the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa to Nairobi as part of China’s massive investment in the continent. Donovan says the soldier told him his house stood in the way of the train and would have to be demolished. He has since been rallying support to save the house and has so far gathered 3,000 signatures for a petition. “I think most people found it incredible — they just don’t believe

it,” he says. “They just think it can’t happen,” he told the LA Times. Alternate routes for the train that would leave his house standing, he says, such as through the park or an elevated platform would allow animals to pass underneath. After months of fighting for answers and escalating his publicrelations campaign, he says, he received a call last weekend from Kenya’s foreign minister (Amina Mohamed) with a message that the

rail route would be altered. “The most promising news I have had for eight months,” he says. But Donovan is hoping for deeper reassurances from Kenyan officials. If the house, which has been featured in the Architectural Digest, is not demolished, Donovan plans to have it open as an African-studies centre in connection with the American University in Washington.

under THREAT: The African Heritage House, the ‘most photographed house in Africa,’ had been earmarked for demolition to make way for the Standard Gauge Railway.

Medics reject anti-HIV pill supply to prostitutes Clinical officers have rejected a proposal to have sex workers provided with daily HIV prevention pills. The officers say if implemented, the Government move will make it difficult to account for funds since prostitution is illegal in Kenya. Kenya Union of Clinical Officers Secretary General George Gibore says the plan will lure many into prostitution once they know there are funds to guard against the deadly virus.

“Apart from encouraging people into prostitution, it will also be difficult to account for the funds because proponents are not sure of the number of those they are targeting,” he said. “It will be a big scandal because how do you account for people whom you don’t know where they exist and their number,” he said. The programme will cost tax payers about Sh4 billion annually and will guarantee healthy sex workers access to HIV/Aids prevention drugs.

An expert budgetary report prepared for the Government indicates that for every one male or female prostitute, the country will spend about Sh48, 667 annually to protect this high risk group from HIV/Aids infection. The proposal originates from an ambitious Sh1.7 trillion road map to eliminate HIV by 2030 that was launched last month by Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia. Drafters proposed that high risk groups such as prostitutes, prisoners and injecting

drugs users should get a daily HIV and Aids prevention pill. The proposal which is medically referred to as pre-exposure prophylaxis (Prep), is a process in which healthy people at high risk of infection swallow a daily single pill called Truvada to keep the virus away. But clinical officers want the project halted. KUCO chairman Peterson Wachira said they have petitioned Parliament to force the Ministry of Health first deal with more pressing issues facing the sector.

Security boost as Nairobi show begins

Human beings not as evil as previously thought Humans are not as evil as was previously thought More than 50 years ago, a renowned Professor by the name of Stanley Milgram ran studies on how ordinary people can do extraordinary harm to others when asked to do so. His conclusion was that humans are programmed to obey orders, no matter how horrific, which supposedly proved a theory that people are naturally evil. His study was supposed to explain why soldiers sometimes do terrible things in times of war. But now, new research suggests Professor Milgram was wrong. In his experiment, which took place at Yale University in 1961, Milgram asked volunteers to give what they believed were

electric shocks of increasing strength to people who were trying but failing to learn a task. The electric shocks were, of course, fake but the people administering them believed they were real. The participants would ‘electrocute’ people in a room by pushing a button when they failed to do a task as they were advised. The researchers said that participants didn’t act this way because they were naturally evil. Instead their behaviour was influenced by the fact they believed they were contributing to science. Professor Haslam said: “Perpetrators are generally motivated, not by a desire to do evil, but by a sense that what they are doing is worthy and noble.”

Security has been beefed up ahead of today’s start of Nairobi International Trade Fare at Jamhuri Park, Nairobi. More than 1,000 police officers will be positioned at different places at the fair. This year’s event is expected to attract thousands of visitors and police fear cases of robberies may increase at the event hence the increased security. There are also fears of terror attacks.

Government to shut down rogue recruiting agencies The government will soon revoke the operating licenses of at least 930 recruiting agencies that are said to be bogus. Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu kambi says the agencies will have to undergo a thorough scrutiny and vetting to seek fresh applications. He said the government is planning to roll out regulations and policies that will streamline the recruitment agencies. This comes on the backdrop of cases in which Kenyans who have been recruited as domestic workers, salesmen among other jobs have returned with harrowing tales of oppression and humiliation suffered in the hands of their masters abroad. Saudi Arabia and Lebanon account for most of those cases and Kambi says the government will not wait as Kenyans continue suffering from harassment and humiliation in such countries where they seek employment. “We will make sure that no Kenyan is killed, mistreated or harassed in the Arab world. We will close down all the recruitment agencies and solve the issues once and for all,” he said. Bogus recruitment agencies have been blamed for the suffering of Kenyans with the ministry of foreign affairs warning that those seeking job opportunities abroad should first get their nod.

Three suspected thugs were this morning killed by police in two separate incidents in Nairobi. Two of the suspects were killed in Githurai 44 at about 3am after they had broken into an electronic shop and tried to smuggle out several goods. Another suspect was killed in Kayole while on a mugging spree.

presidential candidate, Abdullah Abdullah. He replaces Hamid Karzai, who experienced a rocky relationship with the United States during his 13 years in power that began after the fall of the Taliban. Ghani and Abdullah had been locked in a lengthy dispute

amid accusations of voting fraud and manipulation, raising fears of increased instability in the fragile, wartorn country. Under the agreement, Abdullah, a former foreign minister who later became a vocal critic of Karzai, will take a newly created position of

chief executive officer, which will have similar functions to a Prime Minister. The deal also calls for the two leaders’ teams to share senior government positions equally between them. Some commentators have suggested the two rivals may have difficulty working

together in government after months of bad blood between them. The political impasse in Afghanistan this year had come as the Taliban continued to mount deadly attacks on high-profile targets and fought fiercely for control of important areas.

Police are looking for a man who stabbed another one to death in Uthiru, Nairobi, in an argument over a mattress. The two had initially argued over a woman who claimed her mattress was in the deceased’s house. Police said the woman has allegedly been cohabiting with the deceased and they differed last night before she claimed the mattress they have been sleeping on was hers. The woman then went and picked up another man who stabbed the deceased in the neck killing him on the spot. The assailant escaped but the woman is under police custody.

The arrangement will see Kenya Airways and America’s Delta Air Lines fly directly between the two countries. Addressing members of the Business council for international understanding during a luncheon hosted in his honour on Friday, President Kenyatta said he had raised the matter with US Secretary of State John Kerry. He said he is optimistic the latest efforts will yield results faster than what has so far been achieved. “We are keen to see the two countries exchange direct flights and I have personally taken it up and raised the issue with top US officials, the latest being in a meeting with John Kerry yesterday,” he said. A new but costly breast cancer drug has shown “unprecedented” benefits in extending lives of women with an aggressive form of the disease. Data released by the pharmaceutical company Roche suggests that Perjeta could, in combination with other drugs, raise survival levels for women with advanced breast cancer by up to 15 months. The new trial data, presented at a conference of the European Society for Medical Oncology in Madrid, shows that a combined treatment can extend women’s survival with advanced HER2+ breast cancer by 15.7 months more than the current standard treatment. “The results are impressive,” said Prof David Miles, a consultant oncologist at the Mt Vernon Cancer Centre, who led the study. “They show a magnitude of survival benefit which we have never seen before in advanced breast cancer, let alone this particular type.” Perjeta costs about Sh346, 800 per 420mg vial. Patients initially need a double of the dose and one vial every three weeks. The prescription adds up to more than Sh6 million a year. But Breakthrough Breast Cancer patients group is optimistic a fair price can be worked out. “It’s impossible to put a price on life’s precious moments. But it’s not impossible to put a fair price on drugs which could stop more of the moments being missed,” says Prof David Miles.

Ebola breakthrough? Doctor reports success using HIV drug A doctor in Liberia has successfully treated Ebola patients with a drug mean for HIV. Dr Gobee Logan says he has had good results with Lamivudine, which he tried out of sheer desperation. He has given the drug to 15 Ebola patients, and all but two survived translating to just 7 percent mortality rate compared to the overall 70 percent of victims whom have succumbed to the deadly virus across West Africa. Logan said he got the idea to try lamivudine when he read in scientific journals that HIV and Ebola replicate

inside the body in much the same way. “Ebola is a brainchild of HIV,” he said. “It’s a destructive strain of HIV.” At first he tried an HIV drug called acyclovir, but it didn’t seem to be effective. Then he tried lamivudine on a healthcare worker who had become ill, and within a day or two he showed signs of improvement and survived. Outside Logan’s Ebola center in Tubmanburg, four of his recovering patients walk the grounds, always staying inside the fence that separates the Ebola patients from everyone else.

“My stomach was hurting; I was feeling weak; I was vomiting,” Elizabeth Kundu, 23, says of her bout with the virus. “They gave me medicine, and I’m feeling fine. We take it, and we can eat -- we’re feeling fine in our bodies.” Kundu and the other 12 patients who took the lamivudine and survived, received the drug in the first five days or so of their illness. The two patients who died received it between days five and eight. “I’m sure that when [patients] present early, this medicine can help,” Logan

A Canadian man has been named the world’s strongest priest after holding several Guinness World Records in weight lifting. Fast is recognised by the world records organisation for pulling

The heavy weightlifter says he draws his inspiration from a 19th Century strongman Louis Cyr. According to the Mirror, a UK newspaper, he has been doing the weightlifting for years.

said. “I’ve proven it right in my center.” Logan is mindful that lamivudine can cause liver and other problems, but he says it’s worth the risk since Ebola is so deadly. He also knows American researchers will say only a real study can prove effectiveness. That would involve taking a much larger patient population and giving half of them lamivudine and the other half a placebo. “Our people are dying and you’re taking about studies?” he said. “It’s a matter of doing all that I can do as a doctor to save some people’s lives.”

Rotary Club on anti-polio drive The Rotary District Club will take a polio eradication campaign across the country with an aim of sensitizing Kenyans on the effects of the disease. The club has already launched the campaign in Nairobi where its members walked along the streets of the city to seek to create awareness on the disease. While lauding efforts that have seen cases of new infections drop significantly, Rotary District Club governor, Bimal Kantaria, said the campaign will bring together celebrities and other public figures who will also help in sensitizing people to take part in the campaign.

TradeMark EA unveils web portal for traders MONday, SEPTEmber 29, 2014

TradeMark East Africa (TMEA) unveiled a web-portal on September 26, 2014 that carried key information on trade and markets in the region. TMEA officials say the web-portal, ‘trademarkea.com’ is “a one-stop shop for information on trade, markets and integration.” Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, TMEA Chief Executive Officer Frank Matsaert said the communications tool will enhance access to information for all East Africa citizens. Matsaert says several TMEA projects

are entering a critical phase. “A good number of projects have matured and are delivering substantial benefits for the region,” he says. Some of the key projects TMEA has executed are the construction at the Holili and Taveta One Stop Border Posts (OSPBs) at the Kenya-Tanzania border. The construction has opened up EA member states to allow citizens access one-stop border controls and save time and money for traders. Karin Anderson, the Programme Investment Committee Chair, said the

TMEA had created access to markets and enhancing trade environment in the region. He said improving business competitiveness will likely create thousands of jobs. “TMEA has achieved great milestones in few years from automating import and export clearing systems, using single windows to facilitate the transit of goods through East Africa, improving the efficiency of critical government systems relevant to trade, or supporting the upgrading of ports,” said Anderson.

Low cost housing loans not adequate for ‘homeless’ Kenyans A growing trend by banks to offer low cost home loans is expected to help low and middle income Kenyans take up mortgages. Standard Chartered, Co-operative and Barclays banks along with Rafiki Microfinance have unveiled loan products that charge interest rates as little as 15 per cent of the amount borrowed annually. But the state of the housing market has been harsh on those who rent homes and those who take loans to buy houses.

China uncovers fake trades worth Sh893b A nationwide crackdown on companies in China has uncovered $10billion (Sh893billion) fake trades. Fake trades are falsified transactions by companies used as a way of getting money in and out of a country. China’s currency regulator said 15 fraud cases have been handed over to police for prosecution. Authorities are continuing investigations into the practice. “Fake trade deals can do severe harm to the overall economy” said Wu

Ruilin, Deputy Head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange. “They not only increase the pressure of hot money inflows, but also provide illegal channels for crossborder capital flows.” The global commodity markets endured a tough period in June last year after it was discovered that companies had used fake receipts at Qingdao port, China’s eastern province, to obtain multiple loans. The revelation forced to international

banks and trading houses to launch a series of lawsuits over the exposure. Banks operating in China have been blamed for neglecting their duties in checking the authenticity of the deals. “Some banks facilitated the abnormal increase in transit trade financing and fake trade deals by failing to fulfil the responsibility of authenticity checks and offering services of transit trade financing and receipt and payment,” said Ruilin.

“Those who buy to let are losing money. Those who buy to live in are losing money,” says Carol Kariuki of real estate dealers, The Mortgage Company. She argues that lack of affordable housing in Kenya will only push prices further up, since demand outweighs supply. A recent report by the Centre for Affordable Housing Finance in Africa (CAHF) shows that 90 per cent of Kenyans cannot access home loans. The report says a decent house costs between Sh1 million and Sh1.9 million at the very least. And even at the minimum level, few Kenyans can afford a home loan. The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics classify a person with a monthly net salary of Sh23,671 as a middle income person while those with more than Sh120,000 are upper income earners. “The entry level will continue to move further out of reach for the vast majority of Kenyan families and wage earners,” says Kariuki Based on the report, a Sh1.9 million loan payable at an interest rate of 15 per cent a year attracts a monthly repayment of at least Sh26,000. But banks have developed more mortgage products to help ease the burden.

Moringa seeds and leaves provide rich food solution Farmers are using a plant known as Moringa oleifera, commonly referred to as miracle tree, to improve their livelihoods. An initiative by the Green World Campaign (GWC), as a part of their ‘ReGreen the World initiative’ is offering solutions for increasing not only food security and nutrition in rural Kenya, but also providing an income for smallholders. The Moringa oleifera tree is a fast growing plant, reaching maturity in just nine months. It can survive harsh droughts and has both edible leaves and oil-bearing seeds. The GWC believes that by cultivating moringa trees, communities stand to make a fortune. Marc Barasch, the founder and director of GWC, says Kenyan households can save up to 25 per cent of their income by pressing their own oil from the moringa tree seeds. Barasch adds that because the moringa leaves are 30 per cent high quality protein and have high levels of nutrients, cultivating them can ensure that families increase the quality of their nutrition. The leaves have 25 times the iron of spinach, 17 times the calcium of milk, 15 times the potassium in bananas, and 9 times the protein of yogurt, and the farmers can eat them, and sell whatever surplus they may have. It is said that one moringa tree can feed a family of seven once a week. “The recent introduction of a seed-oil press by Green World Campaign is

magnifying the benefits of moringa beyond nutrition and environmental restoration by providing an alternative to expensive purchased

They then met again in August 2013 and started dating. “I have always wanted God to give me a wife who has the same cultural background as me. So when I met her again, I knew God had answered my prayer,” said Thomas. And the rest, they say, is history. On August 30th, 2014 before friends and family, the couple exchanged vows at Deliverance Church in Umoja. The reception was held at the same venue. “Our wedding was the greatest day of our lives since it was a sign of our love and

commitment to each other,’’ said Thomas Nandwa. He also says their wedding was a show of their purity and devotion towards God. They had a budget of Sh 300,000 and with the help of the committee, friends, and relatives their wedding was a success. When asked what he liked most about his partner, Nandwa answered: “Her love for God which makes all other virtues to overflow from her. Not to mention that my babe is extremely beautiful.”

When is the right time to propose?

A marriage proposal is a huge step. Deciding to go down on one knee takes a lot of courage and faith. She may say yes or no. What most people don’t know, is that there is a lot more pressure on women than men to get married. When a guy gets married his friends start acting as if he is going to prison. But when a woman is the last one to get married, she gets pressure from all sorts of directions. What with friends getting married, family asking, colleagues reminding them they are getting old and of course their biological clock ticking down. Some people propose two months or ten years after meeting their significant other. The right time to propose generally differs from couple to couple and it also depends on the individual. If the timing is right for both of them then why not. However, if it is not, it may be potentially heartbreaking.

Good photography vital for a complete wedding The worst answer one could get is a ‘no’ or a ‘I would like to marry you but not right now’. So one never knows, you just try your luck and pray she says yes. There is a saying, marry in haste and repent at leisure. So when is the right time to propose? There are different things that come into play before one gets down to propose. First, the couple should sit down and discuss their future together. Both parties must be on the same page regarding the future. Marriage is a lot of work and needs a lot of compromise, patience and commitment. If you feel you do not want to get married yet, then you should probably not propose to your significant other. Remember, etting into a marriage just because you thought it was the right thing to do at the time could the biggest mistake you will ever make.

Photography is an important part of the wedding planning process. It is one of the ways that the couple gets to reminisce about their wedding and tell the story through the photos. Needless to say, finding the right photographer is important but is also overwhelming. The couple has to find one that will capture the special moments of the ceremony such that as they go through them, they relive the moment. One of the most important things to consider when choosing a photographer is the style. The

couple usually have a particular liking of the style or rather theme that they would like their wedding photos to resemble-from an African theme to a classical theme. When choosing a photographer, find out if they can incorporate the style, go over their portfolios and see if their past photographs are up to your standards. Scout the location that you want the photo-shoot to take place, preferably with the photographer. This will be helpful in giving them an idea of the few positions for the photos and to know how the light might come into play. It would be best to take a few test shots. Remember to consider the budget, do not go overboard or in debt. Discuss with the photographer and let them know.

The independent Woman She can do it all by herself. When her car breaks down, she is not afraid to get her hands dirty to fix it. If anything needs to be fixed around the house, she has a tool box to handle that too. She has a successful career and possibly owns a company. She is the first priority and leaves no room for personal life. She is the independent woman. The term independent woman means a successful one who can do anything she wants and needs no man to take care of her. This is a new generation of women who are empowered, independent and do not want to be defined by a relationship. They have instead made commitments to jobs and themselves. Faith Muiruri, 36, owns a computer firm in the city. She enjoys the freedom of being single. “I like that I’m able to put myself first instead of anyone else. I owe no one an explanation on

touchspot Friends may not be right about our partners

how I spend my money or if I get home late at night.” Even the proverbial biological clock is neither a concern nor does it scare them. Independent women find their jobs far better than

children. Lawyer Racheal Nandwa, 42, says the thought of having a child has never crossed her mind. “I have never been maternal and I have never wanted children,” she says. “I enjoy and love

my job so much that I cannot put anyone or anything else before it. Last year I got my PhD and I am not about to stop… I want to start my own firm and I will not let anything get in my way.”

The term independent woman is one that best describes a successful woman that can do anything she wants and have no need for a man to take care of her.

My dad left us for another family This has badly affected my younger twin siblings. They are 10 years old and can’t stop crying. I’m also hurting but I think they are feeling the pinch more than I do. They did not get the chance to be with him for long like I did. I’m 18 years old and grateful for the time I spent with him. He was a wonderful dad to us. One day, however, he woke up and left. I don’t understand what we did to make him walk out on us.

A part of me hates him for this but the other wishes he would return so that my sisters can smile again. It breaks me to see them so sad and unable to do the usual stuff they used to. My mother has been strong and keeps on comforting them, but it is not working. One of them says she feels like committing suicide. This is scary. She has always been emotionally delicate and so much attached to him. Is there anything

we can do to make them smile again? Reply: It is so touching to see how much y ou love your sisters and would do anything to make them happy. When young, you may not comprehend why some things happen. Your sisters need you and your mum more than ever to overcome this. Let them know you are there for them no matter what happens. The fact that your

dad left does not mean your lives should be halted. He is still alive and maybe one day he will realise his mistake and come back to you. Hopefully it won’t be too late. Some situations are hard to get over but it gets easier with time. You may not forget but can learn to live with it. Change of environment will be good for them. You can all take a short vacation and do fun stuff as a family. —CM

The girl child rights tigress Human right has been the heart beat driving Patricia Nyaundi’s passionate fight for justice for the destitute. The renowned lawyer shook the hearts of many when she early this year appeared as a witness in court in a case for eight women who were seeking compensation from the government for neglect. She narrated how they were abused sexually during the

2007 post poll chaos and they did not know who to report to since they accuse the police of the acts. She had taken part in the hearings and preparation of the Waki report, which probed into the skirmishes. She has seen the girl child as disadvantaged, with no one to stand for her. This activism saw the brilliant Human Rights masters’ student from the University of Cape Town rise to head Federation of Kenya Women Lawyers, FIDA. Nyaundi was admitted to the bar of the advocate of the High Court in 1991 after her undergraduate Law degree from the University of Nairobi. She has been carrying out litigation

besides rights and harmful practices awareness for instance, Female Genital Mutilation. Her history on fighting the historical social injustices propelled her to the Chief Executive Officer and the Secretary seat to the Truth, Justices and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC). She, however, resigned from this commission before it conclude its report for a Canadian fellowship at the University of Toronto. Her experience of more than two decades as a lawyer and female activist earned her the job of Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, where she is currently working.

Friends are closest to us and often influence our choices in life. If they are too powerful, they are likely to influence our relationships and future spouses! But Charles Kamau says a decision on his future wife cannot be compromised by what close friends think. “It does not matter what my friend says about my girlfriend. You can’t trust his judgement against your own. He may be insincere, biased or envious,” says Kamau, a fourth- year university student. Phylice Bitutu says she will pay attention to the allegations. “What my friends says about my boyfriend may not be true, but I cannot dismiss it fully. Maybe he has taken advantage of my trust in him and is playing games behind my back. I have to discern the truth,” Bitutu says. “No one has one friend. Checking the allegations from friends will give a clear image of my partner,” says Grace Kindi. “I have to check if they had previous grievances. One may not want their silent enemies to be spouses to close friends. Maybe he rejected her, but has fallen for me,” Kindi, 21, says.

The sassy Kalekye Mumo

She is an actress, a television host, a business woman and a musician. Her latest song “I am okay”, has been a hit country wide. Kalekye is also a fashionista saying she always dresses to impress. Let the sun and the moon collide, I can’t forgive you Betrayal of a loved one brings resentment that may not be redeemed by saying sorry. Featuring Cher Lloyd in her lyrics, Really Don’t Care, Demi Lovato swears she cannot forgive her former lover. He was avaricious. He wanted to have an affair on the side, “playing in and out”, expecting her to put up with it. Lovato dissents the greedy guy because when she asked him about the affair, he walked out on her.

Now that the new-found love has shattered his heart into shreds, he wants to come back to her; but it is not possible. The musician likens the impossibility of accepting him back to the collision of the moon and the sun. She asks him to keep his lies away from her. She recalls how she used to stay till late writing songs and thinking about him. Not anymore. “He had the opportunity, but he tossed it

into the wind.” He lost her, not once, but forever. Lloyd mocks the guy telling him to go to hell with his ego. He should be mad at himself, not anyone else for not being rejected because he decided his destiny by leaving Lovato for another flower. He was wrong by thinking the new flower is trendier. It has chosen to tear his heart as he did to Lovato.

Kenyans must fight ignorance on Cervical Cancer

It is surprising that our mothers, sisters and wives continue to die of preventable and curable diseases in the digital age at the pretext of ignorance (Curable Cervical Cancer toll rises over ignorance, September, 26, 2014).

Access to information to women, children and men has been eased in equal measure. A united war on ignorance requires efforts by all stakeholders, including society and the Government. If men are not infected by the

disease, they are affected financially and emotionally because wives, sisters or mothers remain at risk. The disease is not a female phenomenon. The Government faces challenges in providing quality health services

to all because of limited resources. Spending on awareness drives is worthier than treatment. Activism should not be directed to thieves of public coffers and those who rib human life: such as Cervical Cancer. A sick woman is a

sick man, a sick child, sick society and sick nation. Let us unite in raising awareness on the effects of the disease. It is worth noting that the disease is preventable and curable if detected in time. Laura Kanini-Nairobi

Ingwe were trailing 2-0 but a penalty from striker Austine Ikenna reduced the arrears and an own-goal from Tusker’s Llyod Wahome put the match at 2-2 before Humphrey Mieno struck home the winner with six minutes to the final whistle. Ministry backs under fire KHU The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, through the Sports registrar office has made a U-turn over an apparent the registration of Hockey Kenya Federation (HKF), a body challenging the legality of Kenya Hockey Federation (KHU) in office. Three weeks ago, Mary Wasike, the Sports Registrar allegedly endorsed HKF as the bonafide body mandated to run Hockey in the country after they complied with the July 31 deadline of registration. But, last Wednesday, September 24, Wasike revoked HKF’s registration and alleged, George Jalang’o, the HKF interim vice chairman falsely picked the registration form from her office. A letter addressed to HKF from Wasike September 24 stated: “Please note that on July 14, you picked up ‘FORM A’ from the office of registrar on behalf of Multimedia University. On July 31st, you returned the form to the said office applying as Hockey Kenya Federation.” Wasike further stated in the letter that KHU was in the office legally after they reapplied on July 28th even though the same office had confirmed earlier that they had not complied by the regulation by deadline day, July 31st.

Messi celebrates 400th career goal

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi says he “never imagined” scoring over 400 goals in his remarkable career. The four-time world player of the year, 27, passed the landmark with a brace in the Spanish side’s 6-0 home win over Granada on Saturday. The Argentina captain headed in his 400th goal for club and country and then stroked in his 401st late on. “It’s like Messi was touched by a magic wand,” said Barcelona coach Luis Enrique. “I don’t think if we added together the goals we have scored on the playground it would reach 400,” Enrique told journalists in his post-match news

conference. Messi has scored 359 goals for Barcelona since making his debut in 2004, plus 42 strikes for Argentina, in 506 career appearances. He is already widely considered as one of the all-time greatest players after being instrumental in helping Barcelona win 21 trophies, including six La Ligas and three Champions Leagues, in the past decade. He has also won a host of individual honours including four

consecutive Ballon d’Ors, the trophy given to the world’s best player, between 2009 and 2012. “I never imagined I could achieve anything like this in my career,” said Messi on his official Facebook page. “I’ll continue working hard to reach more targets.” Messi also helped set up three goals against Granada as unbeaten Barca, who finished as runners-up last season, moved top of La Liga after six matches.

‘Foreign substance’ drives Rosberg to retire Mercedes say Nico Rosberg’s retirement from the Singapore Grand Prix was caused by his car being contaminated by a “foreign substance”. The team said analysis of the German’s steering column revealed a residue of a material used in pre-event servicing. This caused a short-circuit that led to the problems Rosberg encountered before and during the race with using his clutch and changing engine settings. The contamination was not visible and did not affect the car until the race day.

The team said the substance which affected the column is used in servicing at the factory before the cars are shipped to the races and that the steering column design had been in use since 2008. Mercedes added in a statement: “Fresh parts will be used at the forthcoming races. “The team has been working intensively on reliability and quality processes during 2013 and 2014 in order to improve our performance in this area and these efforts will continue at the same intensive level over the coming months.”

Kimetto smashes world record On Sunday, Kenyan Dennis Kimetto ran 2 hours 2 minutes 57 seconds to set the sixth marathon world record at Berlin in the past 11 years. On the flat course, aided by a number of pacesetters in cool weather, Kimetto became the first person to run 26.2 miles faster than 2:03 and shattered the record by 26 seconds. It had been set only a year ago in Berlin by a fellow Kenyan, Wilson Kipsang. “Today is a big day for me. The fans made me confident, and I thought I could do it,” Kimetto, 30, said after victory. Kimetto’s record victory was the latest in a career of searing ascent. He ran his first marathon only two years ago, in Berlin, and set a world mark for the fastest debut in 2:04:16. He won the 2013 Chicago Marathon and set a course record in 2:03:45, his best time until his world record on Sunday. In 2012, some Berlin commentators said that Kimetto seemed to purposely allow his more accomplished training partner, Geoffrey Mutai, to win the race by a second. But Kimetto showed no deference to his competitors on Sunday, running a negative split by covering the second half of the course 33 seconds faster than the first. His record pace was a stunning 4 minutes and 41.5

seconds per mile. In the final miles, Kimetto took an insurmountable lead over his countryman Emmanuel Mutai, who finished second in 2:03:13

Moyes could replace Pardew at Newcastle David Moyes will be the frontrunner to replace Alan Pardew if Newcastle owner Mike Ashley carries out his threat to sack his embattled manager. Moyes is said to be ready for a return to work after his controversial reign at Manchester United ended in April and sources close to the Scot believe he would like to manage the Toon. Ashley has insisted that comments he made to a reporter outside a London pub claiming he would axe Pardew if Newcastle lose at Stoke on Monday night, were “tongue in cheek”. Ashley is reported to have said of the 53-year-old: “He’s got one more game. If we lose against Stoke on Monday night then he’s gone. I have spent a lot on money on that club.

I won’t put up with it any more. There is only so much I can take.” Pardew, when asked on Saturday about the report, claimed: “I think he was trying to be supportive in his own kind of way. “Unfortunately we’ve had those sort of headlines for two or three weeks – they are what they are. “I’ve not seen him, I’ve spoken to him this week. He’s obviously very keen for us to get victories. That’s what he’s about. That’s what we’re about – winning. “I’ve been made aware of his comments in the paper. I’ve been under pressure at this club for a number of weeks. “All I can focus on now is the team and that’s what I’ll do. You have to be focused on what the goal is.”

and also broke the record. Abera Kuma of Ethiopia came third in 2:05:56. Immediately, speculation was renewed about whether, and when, the two-hour barrier

might be broken. “From what I saw today, times are coming down and down,” Emmanuel Mutai said. “So if not today, then tomorrow. Maybe next time we’ll get 2:01.”

In the men’s race, a halfdozen runners followed pacesetters to the halfway point in 1:01:45. Emmanuel Mutai reached 30 kilometres (18.6 miles) in 1:27:37, a

record for the distance. He surged to try to break Kimetto and another Kenyan, Geoffrey Kamworor. Afterward, Kimetto said he thought he could run faster.

Wins for Manchester clubs, Chelsea, draw for Arsenal Manchester United, Chelsea, and Manchester City all secured wins in their English Premier League (EPL) games on Saturday. Such was not the case for Liverpool and Arsenal who both settled for draws in their derby games. Of the top teams who were in action on Saturday, only Chelsea didn’t need to break much sweat in their own game to emerge victorious.

Chelsea were too powerful for Aston Villa with goals from Oscar, Diego Costa and Willian ensuring that the Blues eased past their visitors with a comfortable 3-0 victory at Stamford Bridge. Manchester City, who put seven goals past Sheffield United in a Capital One Cup third round match on Wednesday, had to call on those goals again in their 4-2 win over Hull City.

Manchester City were given a scare in the game at one point, playing a 2-2 draw until they pulled away with goals from Edin Dzeko and Frank Lampard. If Man City got a scare, their City neighbours Manchester United got a fright in their game against West Ham. United had to dig deep to secure a 2-1 win, defending astutely in a game that they almost bottled it.

Wayne Rooney did not lead by example, picking up a callous red-card that left his team rudderless. Coach Louis Van Gaal was delighted with the team’s defending, particularly with the younger players (Luke Shaw and Paddy McNair) who came in to feel the spaces left by injured players. Meanwhile, Liverpool and Arsenal all dropped valuable points at home in their games against their city rivals. Liverpool skipper Stephen Gerrard scored a spectacular free-kick in the 65th minute but Phil Jagielka thumped in a late equaliser to help Everton secure a 1-1 draw. And in London Alex Oxlaide Chamberlain made sure they didn’t drop full points at the Emirates, after he pounced on a loose ball to cancel out Nacer Chadli’s 56th minute goal.
