End of an era as Kenya’s battery king shuts down

In 1967, a few years after Kenya gained independence, investors affiliated to America’s Eveready Batteries Limited landed in Kenya with a large sack of money. They had an even bigger investment spirit, ready to make the country a regional battery production powerhouse. In no time, a plant that could spit 200 million batteries a year was set up on an 18.5 acre piece of land. Soon, its engines were roaring profits after profits through their mills. For years to come, Eveready kept reaffirming its authority in the region.

P2

end of an era: Eveready East Africa Limited will from October shut down its iconic Nakuru dry batteries manufacturing factory, bring to an end more than 46 years of dry cells production. The company plans to set up a real estate business on the 18.5 acre piece of land the factory owns.

Eveready switch to real estate TUESday, September 30, 2014

Radio spot jingles would drive anyone to Shika Paka Power whenever their flashlight showed as much as a flicker. Or when the radios started producing the characteristic rumble to show the batteries were going low. Business was healthy as the Eveready factory in Nakuru came to gain the fame of being among the most desirable work stations. “As casual workers, we would get paid Sh500 a day when other companies around the industrial area were paying Sh90 for a day’s work,” says James Okoth, who counts his time at Eveready as the

most rewarding in his working life. The Eveready factory in Nakuru was a landmark on its own. Standing smirk along the NakuruEldoret highway, it was not unusual for one to give directions into the town using the factory as a point of reference. “Eveready’s lawns were manicured to perfection and the factory’s white-painted constructions made it one of the most recognisable establishments in the area,” says Marion Mariga, who has lived in Nakuru since 1983. But towards the turn of the century, something unexpected happened.

The borders started becoming porous to allow in cheaper imports. They were initially dismissed as childish competition to the super brand that Eveready was. But gradually, they started gaining acceptance. In addition, governments in the region realised they would realise more economic success by ensuring majority of citizens were connected to national power grids. And almost on cue, the rain started hitting Eveready. Sales dropped and any counter measures were the last kicks of a dying horse. New ad campaigns (with even catchy jingles) and an

IPO could not just cut it. And on Monday September 29, the company’s Managing Director Jackson Mutua went public with news that the firm was shutting down the Nakuru factory effective October 1. In its place, the company plans to set up apartments. The company’s 100 employees are also set to lose jobs. “The closure of our plant reiterates the shift to a commercial oriented entity. It has taken away the long cash conversion cycles and offers the flexibility to quickly react to market demands whilst focusing on our core business of

distribution,” Mutua said. The company promised to keep its supply of (D-size) batteries fresh by (ironically) importing from Egypt’s Energizer factory. But the emotional attachment Nakuru dwellers had with the plant is not something they will shake off soon. “Eldoret had Rivatex, Kisumu had the mollasses plant, Mombasa had the port and Nakuru Eveready. It’s really unfortunate they had to shut down…but again we understand it is all business. I might take my family there for a photo shoot before the apartments are erected,” Everlyne Magoma says with a light touch.

Two wives, mistress for Newcastle FC star ‘normal’ Amidst criticism from fellow players and the public, Cheick Tiote, a married football star who has two wives and a mistress, has defended the lifestyle, claiming it is “nothing unusual”. Tiote, an Ivorian-born Premier League footballer who earns £45,000 (Sh6.5 million) a week playing for Newcastle United, reportedly married Laeticia Doukrou in a traditional ceremony this month as an addition to first wife Madah, 25. The 28-year-old midfielder, who lives with Madah and their two children in a mansion at Ponteland near Newcastle, has a one-year-old child with a third woman named Nikki Mpofu. Polygamy was banned in Ivory Coast in 1964. The sentence for the crime is six months to three years in jail or a fine set by the

court. Polygamy is, however, still a common practice in the region. It is especially common among a religious group known as animists and in Muslim communities. Under Muslim Sharia law, polygamy is legitimate as Muslim men are allowed to take up to four wives Tiote’s agent, Jean Musampa, recently confirmed reports he had married for a second time. Musampa said: “I can say he did get married and that it is his second marriage. This is nothing unusual. He is a Muslim.” The Daily Mail reported that Mpofu and his 33-year-old Zimbabwean mistress, recently ended their three-year affair after he allegedly promised to make her his wife, claiming he “used me like a mop”. third in line: Mistress Nikki Mpofu carries Tiote’s one-year-old child.

Tobiko tells IPOA to hand over Kwale minor file The Director of Public Prosecutions has ordered the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to submit a file on the investigations into an incident where officers shot dead a 14 year-old girl at Kinango, Kwale County. Keriako Tobiko today told IPOA chairman Macharia Njeru to submit the file by Friday this week

to allow him make conclusions on the matter. “Noting that IPOA has been carrying out independent investigations into this matter and in order to enable this office to make a holistic decision on the same, I do hereby direct that you cause your investigations file together with your recommendations therein to be

forwarded to this office on or before October 3, 2014,” Tobiko wrote in a letter dated September 29. Officers allegedly shot Kwekwe Mwandaza, a Standard Four pupil, at Maweu Village in Kinango Division, sparking nationwide outrage. Police had initially claimed eight armed officers were acting in self defence after the girl

threatened them with a panga. But her two cousins who said they were in the house when the incident occurred, contradicted the police version of events. They reporting that the officers burst into their house at night after breaking the door. But an inquest file into the matter has recommended manslaughter charges against police who were

involved in the incident. Tobiko said on Monday the file was forwarded to his office on September 23 and is reviewing the recommendations. Authorities bowed to mounting public outrage to announce they had opened investigations into the minor’s murder after she was shot by police officers eight times during a raid on their home.

Mbagathi Rd speed bumps removed

Mankind has a sense of justice that animals do not share A sense of justice and fairness sets human beings apart from other animals. This behaviour has helped mankind evolve to promote the benefits of longterm co-operation, experts claim. Scientists came to the conclusion after studying the phenomenon for more than 10 years. While monkeys and dogs became upset when treated unfairly, only humans and their great ape cousins voluntarily allowed themselves to be disadvantaged for the sake of fairness and equality among their peers. The trait is not entirely unselfish, the researchers note, but rather it is the result of wanting to avoid encouraging acts of revenge

from a dissatisfied partner and ensure future co-operation. The paper reviewing research into the trait was published in the journal Science and was co-authored by psychologist Dr Sarah Brosnan from Georgia State University. “Giving up an outcome that benefits you in order to gain long-term benefits from the relationship requires not only an ability to think about the future, but also the self-control to turn down a reward,” she said. Dr Brosnan and Dr Frans de Waal, from the Yerkes National Primate Research Center at Emory University, began their studies of fairness in monkeys in 2003.

Officials from Kenya Urban Roads Authority were last evening forced to remove bumps they had erected on Mbagathi Road after police protested saying they were causing traffic jam in the city. Police also demanded that a zebra crossing that had been painted near a footbridge at Highrise be removed saying it was unnecessary.

Kenya’s inflation rate goes down

Media urged to suppress tribal hatred instigators The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has appealed to media outlets to help tame people whose utterances can instigate ethnic hatred amongst Kenyans. NCIC chairman Francis ole Kaparo made the appeal yesterday just after being sworn into office by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga. He said efforts must be made to unite the country, which largely remains divided along ethnic and political lines. “You (the media) will help us to tame people who have dangerous tongues, poisonous tongues that are worse than guns,” he told journalists yesterday. He said the current political intolerance in the country shows that Kenya is yet to achieve a cohesive society and called on the media to help tame rogue leaders who promote hatred.

CALL FOR UNITY: NCIC chairman Francis ole Kaparo has appealed to media outlets to help tame people whose utterances can instigate ethnic hatred amongst Kenyans.

“The kind of job we are going to do is of great importance. It has its own challenges and we must work

to unite Kenyans. Already signs are there that if we do not act, we might finish ourselves,” he warned.

“Kenyans must stop living in denial that we are a cohesive society. We have been pretending for too long yet

we are not,” he said during the event that also saw eight other commissioners sworn in. “We must work at it very hard in our own interest to survive.” He said the commission intends to initiate a dialogue towards the quest for peace and cohesion in the country. “It cannot be business as usual, we cannot continue going at each other’s throats,” he stated. “Those who refuse to come to the table must be forced to do so.” The Chief Justice, who had also sworn in the Sports Disputes Tribunal, challenged the commission to perform its task as per the law saying they have a huge duty to unite the country. “We except to see dialogue, consultation, collaboration and all core values that are critical in building our nation,” he said.

Mutunga calls on Senate to help boost public confidence in courts Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has urged senators to appeal court decisions that they are not happy with instead of threatening to cease participating in court processes. In a response letter to the Senate Speaker Ekwe Ethuro, Dr Mutunga warned that ignoring courts would erode public confidence in the

judiciary. The senate had written to the CJ protesting that the judiciary is was interfering with their oversight role in a letter where senators threatened to ignore the courts. “If you ever do that, given the position of your institution, the people’s confidence in the courts would suffer,” Dr Mutunga warned

in his response. One of the major issues of contention is the case of Embu governor Martin Wambora which the senate says it had impeached. Mr Wambora still continues discharging his duties as his appeal pends in court. Dr Mutunga promised the senate that he will fast-track the hearing

of the case. “I will call for the file and fast track the matter by giving a definite period upon which the matter must be concluded,” he wrote. He also said he was aware of the concerns and perceptions the case has raised but refrained from providing a judicial opinion saying the matter was in court.

The inflation in the month of September dropped by 6.6 percent compared to 8.36 percent the previous month according to statistics released. According to the statistics costs of housing, water, electricity and fuel went down by 0.52 percent following the decline in the cost of kerosene and electricity. During the same period, the transport index decreased by 0.41 percent due to a reduction in pump prices of petrol and diesel. “The food and non-alcoholic drinks’ index however increased by 0.58 percent due to increases in the prices of several food commodities,” the statement notes.

Three thugs lynched in Mukuru slums Three suspected thugs were last night lynched by a mob in a botched robbery in Mukuru kwa Reuben in Nairobi. A fourth suspect managed to escape on foot in the incident that has been criticised by police. According to the authorities, the men were accused of robbing pedestrians in the area before an alarm was raised. This attracted a mob that pounced on the men with stones before setting them on fire. Police were called to the scene long after the incident had happened. In another unrelated incident, police are investigating an incident in which a seven month old baby died after consuming milk bought from a local kiosk in Huruma.

Kenyan held in US over colleague ‘terror threat’

A Kenyan man has been arrested in the US for allegedly threatening to behead a co-worker. Jacob Mugambi Muriithi, 30, was arrested last Friday after he allegedly made the “terrorist threats” to a woman with whom he worked at the Bellevue Nursing Home in Oklahoma. Papers presented in court indicate that the accused made the threats on September 19, 2014 when he told the woman he would cut off her head and post it on Facebook. He told the woman he “represented ISIS.” But the woman did not know what ISIS means to which Muriithi allegedly replied “they kill Christians by cutting off their heads”. “We take the threats seriously,” Oklahoma police spokesman David Nelson said. Another digital switch delay by Supreme Court The migration from analogue to digital broadcasting has been delayed once more after the Supreme Court directed the Government to consult stakeholders and develop new deadlines for the switch. The Government led by Information and Communication Technology Cabinet Secretary Fred Matinag’i and media owners welcomed the ruling, saying they were ready to talk.

Hong Kong boss instructs protestors to stand down China has stood its ground and called on the protesters to end the four day demonstration in semi-autonomous Hong Kong insisting it will not back down. China’s decision is based on and using what the basic law allows them to do,” Mr Leung said in his

Intruder made it halfway across the Whitehouse

An intruder who was recently arrested for breaking into the White House made it much further into the building than was initially thought. Initially, it had been reported that Omar Gonzalez was stopped at the North Portico doors after scaling the building’s main fence but sources familiar with on-going investigations say the man who sprinted through the front door made it much farther into the building than previously known, overpowering one Secret Service officer and running through much of the main floor. At the time, Mr Gonzalez, 42, was armed with a knif.

Strengthening ties:Participants in a Kenya-Nigeria business talks in Nairobi during a meeting convened to promote trade links between the two countries. Nairobi and Abuja have struck a partnership deal that is expected to boost the agricultural sector in the two partner states.

Nigeria, Kenya deal to boost farming sector

Nigeria and Kenya will benefit from a partnership that will see both countries boost agriculture sectors. The programme will also provide markets and opportunities for respective farmers. The partnership follows the official launch of the KenyaNigeria Agribusiness Forum, in Nairobi, earlier this month. Kenyan business community representatives who attended

the event, launched business-tobusiness relationships between the two states in areas of opportunities that could benefit both parties. “We want to build on cooperation,” said a Kenyan official who asked for a greater access to the Nigerian market. Dr James Mwangi, chairman of the Kenya-Nigeria Joint Business Council, said: “Our tea goes to Europe and then to

Nigeria. Nigeria can consume the total production of tea from Kenya. You don’t have to look for middlemen from Europe to make that trade work.” Mwangi said Nigeria’s cassava flour could, in turn, be sold to Kenyan consumers. Sani Dangote of Nigeria told the Kenya delegation that “Nigeria has woken up to transform agriculture from just primary production.” “We have realised

that Nigeria was not taking up its role in agriculture… but now has realised the way forward is agriculture, and not oil.” Dangote identified dairy farming as an area Nigeria and Kenya can partner. “If it can be done in Kenya, such an opportunity can be unlocked soon.” Earlier this year, President Uhuru Kenyatta said there should be increased trade between Kenya and Nigeria by 50 per cent.

Themes for this year’s competition include ‘gender equality’, ‘legislative openness’, ‘sub-national governance’, ‘building resilience’ and ‘response to humanitarian crisis’. “To submit an idea, you must first register an account,” Gamala Luitel, a spokesperson for the group, has said. “Once you confirm your email, you can submit the idea.” The requirements for an idea must include a proposal, which should contain a title (50 characters) and a pitch to the organisation’s voters. The voters will select the winner (250 characters) and a theme that best fits into your idea. Applications should contain “the innovation idea or concept, reasons you believe the idea fits in selected theme and how the idea promotes better governance, transparency or decreased corruption.”

Many small business owners know little about setting up an online presence. Given the high cost of hiring a professional to design a website for the enterprises, it can be an advantage to have a free tool like Wix that saves money. The Wix tool allows users to design their websites or blogs free of charge. “For individuals who are less tech savvy and more design-centred, Wix is a great resource for website and blog creation,” says Tanya Prive, a tech expert. Prive is also the founder of Onevest, a crowdfunding firm that helps small businesses and individuals raise cash. “Wix uses a ‘drag and drop’ template so you can fully customise your site,” Prive says. “If you change your company colours in a few months, Wix allows you to easily swap out your old template for an updated version.” Those familiar with web design can benefit from Wix’s newly-launched market app which allows users to add personal apps onto the Wix platform. This is ideal for app creators who want to add another potential marketplace for their product. Given the growing number of Kenya’s web developers and coders, a platform other than the usual smartphone markets can be a useful way to sell apps.

Increased taxes threatening Kenya’s flower exporters

exportopp

Kenya Flower Council (KFC) Chief Executive Officer, Jane Ngige said last week that flower exporters will from October 1, 2014, start paying taxes of up to eight per cent on goods entering the European Union (EU). She said she hopes negotiating parties will speed up the approval of new Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA) between Kenya and Europe to save Kenyan exports from incurring taxes. EPAs are free trade agreements, which the 28-member EU is negotiating with countries in Africa to steadily do away with tariffs on almost all European imports into Africa. Speaking in Nairobi, Ngige, noted that approval of the EPA could take less than six months to complete. “Kenyan exporters will pay duties until the EPA is

ratified. It’s painful for them. They are asking for quickening of the process to make it shortest possible,” Ngige stated. Ngige noted that speeding up the approval process will help lessen the danger of Kenyan exporters losing a considerable share in EU markets to their main competitors, including Equator, Columbia and Ethiopia. “But, should the situation drag for longer, inevitably the cost will be pushed to the buyers, with a likelihood other countries will take over our market if our flowers are more expensive,” she warned. Ngige said the price of Kenya’s flower exports to the EU could rise by between 5 to 8 per cent from October 1: “We are waiting to see a positive outcome out of the negotiations.”

Papaya is an important fruit for local markets and is steadily gaining popularity as an export crop, says Research Biologist, Fredah Rimberia for the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development. Kenyan manufacturers recently developed papaya and grape wines that can be exported to regional

and international markets. As soon as enough local farmers begin to grow the plants, the country will likely see an increase in export gains. The plant is able to produce fruits throughout the year. Due to its habit as a single stemmed tree, it can be economically produced in any size

of land from kitchen gardens to large plantations. Based on country-wide surveys and statistics of papaya production from the Horticultural Crops Development Authority (HCDA) of Kenya, Rimberia has discovered that the major commercial papaya farms in Kenya are located in the eastern and coastal areas.

I initially took this as a joke but when I received the Facebook message informing me that I was the winner, I just had to believe it,” she said. A total of eight weekly winners were awarded different household appliances ranging from decoders, heaters, woofers and water dispensers throughout the four weeks in which the competition took place. Costabir said the main purpose of the competition was to create awareness on the property industry as well engage with their audience. “We want to make it easier for people to access the property industry through the use of smart phones and also build our brand affinity,” said Costabir.

More than one year ago, the total volume of fruits produced in Kenya was about 2.5 million metric tons (MT), of which papaya contributed 229,950 MT as the 4th most important fruit crop in the country. At the time, almost all the papaya fruits produced were consumed locally.

Solar car to tackle global warming The successful innovation and tests of the solar powered electric car, Stella, is burying worries of harmful gas emissions from motor vehicles. The car is fitted with a solar panel roof that arrests the sun energy and converts it for storage into its 15kWh Panasonic lithium ion battery-for powering the engine. The innovators of the car say it is an easy way of harnessing the available energy. “Solar panels on the car mean you don’t have to plug it in to charge it,” said Lex Hoefsloot,

leader of Eindhoven student team. Hoefsloot says it is a solution to fuel crisis since it can comfortably sustain itself. “This is a packaged deal, your energy comes with the car,” he said. Stella is highly efficient in converting energy. ‘She’ can generate up to twice the average amount required to drive ‘her’ in a day. This means you remain safe even past sunset. Students from Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands, took one and half years from conception to making it ready for the road. And who said the solar power

cannot give speed? The car can move at a speed of up to 120KPH. Stella raced and won in the 2013 World Solar Challenge. Improvements on the car have transformed it from a single to four-passenger locomotive. Mass production is expected to be a reality in 5-10 years. The team said they were driven to deal with environmental pollution resulting from combustion of fuel by locomotives, especially carbon dioxide, one of the gases blamed for global warming.

Everyday, technology evolves and new devices are churned into the market. Consumers are always constantly checking which new device is out so that they can purchase it. But with technology comes the stress of taking care of the device so that it lasts longer. The liquid screen Shield is a screen protector that protects screens from scratches, liquids dust and bacteria. There are countless screen protectors for mobile devices in the market, but there are different qualities that set the Liquid Screen Shield from others. The shield when applied does not create the air bubbles that are synonymous with other plastic screen protectors. To apply the shield, the user needs to wipe down the phone or device with a micro fiber cloth that has been provided.

LG GPad 7.0 and 10.1 review LG have launched two new tablets, the LG G Pad 7.0 and 10.1. These tablets are pretty much the same, only differing on size, battery capacity and camera pixels-and maybe a few other minute features. Design: Both tablets are made of plastic with a matte finish that gives them a great look and feel. They are both light weight tablets. However, the 7.0 is slightly thicker than the 10.1 although this does not

When the shield has been put on the device, it does not affect the sensitivity of your phone and one rarely notices it is there as it is invisible. The shield has a lifespan of one year and one 1ml bottle of the liquid shield protector can coat up to three to four phones. The liquid screen shield can be used to coat a variety of devices like tablets laptops, camera lenses and glasses.

Latte art takes the mundane coffee drinking experience to a whole new level

Art in a cup

Ghostly costumes of Isururu dance

By Stella Kimani

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. What if that picture was in your cup of coffee? Imagine going to your favourite coffee house and being served with an intricately designed image staring right back at you. Welcome to the world of latte art which takes the mundane coffee drinking experience to higher levels. According to the Macmillan dictionary, latte art is a pattern made on the surface of a cup of coffee using milk froth. There are basically two methods used to achieve this dextrous activity, etching and free pouring. Etching is whereby a barrister uses a coffee stirrer or toothpick

ourroots

to draw shapes on the coffee while free pouring is pouring milk directly on the coffee to create designs. John Mwonjoria, a seasoned barista at Gibsons Coffee House in Nairobi says that the designs are purely for aesthetic purposes and quality of the coffee or cappuccino is what really matters. “A cappuccino is still a cappuccino even if it does not come with the art. The art is more for presentation purposes,” said Mwonjoria. It is quite unfortunate that latte art, a booming business in the developed world, is unpopular in Kenya. This can be attributed to assumptions

that latte art is expensive hence a preserve of the rich. “With or without the art, the price of a latte or cappuccino remains the same. Besides, not many people care about the designs,” says Mwonjoria. Mwonjoria admits that the designs can play a crucial role of increasing customer loyalty and advises fellow baristas to become more creative and ensure their clients have a memorable coffee drinking experience. Why don’t you surprise yourself and request for some designs to brighten up your boring cup of joe, it will surely be a treat for your eyes and taste buds.

Weddings in the traditional African set-ups marked climax of the ceremony. Among the Abakuria, Isururu or Ibirandi was their main dance that expressed the joy of marriage. Omogwe Chacha, 54, says the ghostly wedding dance received the second name, ibirandi, from the guards that were half filled with beads and then shaken as accompaniments. Dancers had to be in costumes. They looked ghostly in their attires, standing high on blocks of wood called imitiamburi. The platforms made the dancers appear high and away. Colombus monkey skin was won on the back while chests were covered with cheetah skin, to symbolise bravery and readiness

The dancing was done in two circular rows. Every participant had to have a dancing partner. Those without were not to take part. Women kept to the inner circle while men remained at the periphery. During the dance, men faced and held partners and vigorously shook each other while the soloist led them in songs. Isururu dance took place from late evening till dawn. After the celebration, the soloist was given a goat as a reward. However, Chacha says the dance has been consumed by modernity.

Plot Mia Hall (Chloë Grace Moretz) is a talented 17 year-old who has everything-A family that loves and supports her, a boyfriend Adam (Jamie Blackley) who adores her and her talent for playing the cello. Life suddenly changes when the family is involved in a grisly road accident that leaves Mia in a coma and the rest of the family dead. When in the coma, Mia has an out of body experience and during this time she has to decide whether to live or die and see her family again. The decision she makes will determine her fate. The movie is ok; not bad or good. It does not inspire- it is just bland.

Kenyan riders set sights on Rwanda tour After sweeping the podium in 10th edition of Cycle with the Rhino, Iten-based Kenyan riders have set sights on the tour of Rwanda that is set for November. Paul Ariko, one of Kenya’s road race cyclists at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, cruised to victory after clocking 3.55.21 for the 140km course. The former potato vender was using his bicycle to ferry passengers in Nakuru before he was spotted by the Kenyan Riders club run by Australian Simon Blake. He said the low altitude in Nakuru provides easy time for him after training in Iten. “I started riding in 2004 before I was spotted in 2007, leading to my contract signing in 2009,” he said. Ariko represented Kenya in

Commonwealth Games in India, Tour of Egypt’s thrice, five times at Tour of Rwanda, three at Tour of Eritrea and Tour of Gabon,” said Ariko. He failed to finish the gruelling Glasgow road race due to harsh weather, a race where only 12 of the 153 starters completed the course. Ariko says Nakuru’s race, distance and course was good for him as he prepares for an eight-day Tour of Rwanda in November this year. Joseph Gichora (Kenyan Riders) was second, 40 micro seconds behind Ariko as co-trainee Samuel Mwangi, winner of the seventh edition, followed third in 3.56.15. Some Team Kenyan Riders club has some of its riders invited for a Tour rider in Asia this year in what Ariko says provides opportunity for others in the team to try their ability.

City wary of Roma threat After late disappointment against Bayern Munich in their opening Champions’ League group game, Manchester City can ill afford another slip-up in Tuesday’s meeting with in-form Roma at the Etihad Stadium. A 90th-minute goal by City old boy Jerome Boateng gave Bayern victory two weeks ago. And after Roma opened their Group E campaign by

crushing CSKA Moscow 5-1, the English champions are under a degree of pressure. They smashed Sheffield Wednesday 7-0 in the League Cup before seeing off Hull City 4-2 on Saturday. But although Manuel Pellegrini’s side are scoring freely, right-back Pablo Zabaleta knows Roma will be a different prospect. “We need to think about the Champions League,” the

Argentina right-back told City’s in-house TV channel after the victory over Hull. “We lost the first game against Bayern and now we play Roma at home. We know how important it is to win the game. “It’s going to be another tough game because Roma are a good team, so hopefully we can play well and get three points.”

Youngsters in contention for Sevens team slots ahead of World Series The national sevens team for the opening leg of the HSBC World Series in Gold Coast next month will be named tomorrow with new faces expected to make the cut. Coach Paul Treu and his technical bench will review the performance of individual players from the three Kenyan team that (unconvincingly) took part in the weekend’s Safari Sevens. The final team will then be named on Wednesday before Thursday’s departure to South Africa for a four-day training camp. Shujaa, Morans and Simba Saba never progressed beyond the main cup quarterfinals, but the technical bench was able to field all players, some of whom were fast-tracked to the wider squad after 18 players opted out. The focus now shifts to Gold Coast, Australia, and Treu has a heavy task of coming up with 12 players for the opening leg. “It will be tough in Gold Coast but we hope to come up with a compact team from this tournament. These young players performed beyond our expectations and the aspect of team effort came out well,” said Treu on Sunday. The coach hinted, Leonard Mugaisi, who finished the tournament, Cyprian Kuto, Davis Chenge, Martin Owila and youngsters Alex Olaba and Michael Wanjala will most likely be in the final team. “Performance is mostly weighed in terms of trophies and medals, for me it was a matter of getting young players to playing for the national team, with intensive training to be held in South Africa, I foresee a very formidable team before the opening leg of the season,” he said. “We wanted them to be hungry for performance and get ready to play for Kenya Sevens. They played as per our philosophy and we now hope to at least better our previous performance when we never got past the quarters,” he said.

Pacquiao ‘pities’ Mayweather jibe

eyeball-to-eyeball: Philippine’s Manny Pacquiao (right) says he has other things to worry about other than

Philippine boxing hero Manny Pacquiao on Monday brushed off Floyd Mayweather’s latest taunts, saying he pities his US rival and urged him to read the Bible. Pacquiao also assured fans he would play a few minutes of professional basketball when the new season opens next month as he trains for a November against unbeaten Chris Algieri of US. Despite calls by fans for the two biggest names in the sport to finally clash, Mayweather has refused to commit himself to a match. But he has not refrained from baiting Pacquiao. In the latest jibe, Mayweather, undefeated in 47 fights, recently posted several pictures on his social media account showing Pacquiao knocked down in past fights. He said “Miss Pac Man is broke for a pay day.” The deeply religious Pacquiao, who has 56 wins and five losses, said: “I’m not affected by it. I pity him and I pray that someday he would change his ways.”

“He (Mayweather) should fear God,” Pacquiao said, and asked him to heed the biblical passage reading that says “For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” Pacquiao, 35, who has held world titles in eight separate weight divisions, has other things to worry about other than Mayweather’s insults. Besides training, he also acts as coach and player for the newly-created Kia Motors team in the highlycompetitive Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). The 169-centimetre (5-ft 6-in) Pacquiao said he would make training for the fight his main priority and leave most of his basketball duties to his assistant coach. “I already talked to (boxing) coach Freddie (Roach) that I am going to play in the PBA, maybe just two to three minutes. My focus is on my training for the November fight,” he said.

insults from Floyd Mayweather (US) and is set to fight Mayweather’s countryman Chris Algieri in November.

Khan’s swipe at team selectors Pakistan batsman Younis Khan has taken a swipe (pictured right) at the team’s selectors after being left out of their one-day squad. Khan said on Monday he would step aside from cricket for five months as the team is rebuilt. But he questioned the timing of such significant changes with the World Cup just around the corner. Given his recent axing, the 36-year-old is unlikely to be picked for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand given his poor form

in limited overs in recent years. But he remains Pakistan’s best middle-order batsman in Tests, where his absence could seriously hurt the team’s chances against Australia and New Zealand in upcoming series. “They have hurt me, if you say that I am not in future planning then it hurts. I am fit and I am committed.” “If we wanted to rebuild the team then (the) World Cup was held four years ago, why are we rebuilding this in the last three to four months?”

The stylish right-hander, who averages over 51 in Tests with 24 centuries to his name, has seen turmoil in the past and has a reputation for his outspoken comments. In 2006 he refused to stand in for then-injured skipper, Inzamam-ul-Haq, saying he did not want to be a “dummy captain”. He went on to lead the team to World Twenty20 glory in 2009, lost the captaincy again, and later refused to take it back when offered.

Hamilton maintains winning mind-set

Lewis Hamilton is adamant his situation and mind-set have not changed as he leads the Formula One World Championship. So long the hunter over the course of the current campaign, Hamilton is back in front for only the second time this season in the wake of events in

Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix. After bitter rival and Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg retired after 14 laps following a wiring loom failure in the steering column of his car, Hamilton went on to take the chequered flag. The 29-year-old has a threepoint lead going into the final

five races of the season, starting with next weekend’s race in Japan followed swiftly a week later by the Russian Grand Prix. But despite the man now being hunted, Hamilton said: “I have believed, since the time I started training for this season, that I can win the world championship this year.”

Five-time European champions Bayern Munich travel to Russia on Tuesday to take on domestic giants CSKA Moscow behind closed doors on matchday two in Group E. Pep Guardiola’s talent-laden, but injury ravaged side, opened their account with a last minute 1-0 victory over English champions Manchester City in their opener. CSKA were humbled 5-1 in the Italian capital by Roma. The Red Army side have been punished by governing body UEFA after fan unrest during their group stage match against Czech club Viktoria Plzen last season. Only a sparse number of people will be inside the Khimki Arena for Tuesday’s key match. The 12-time Russian champions find themselves in more hot water after violent clashes at the Roma clash when

a number of arrests were made inside and outside the Olympic Stadium. Bayern maybe without World Cup winning defender Jerome Boateng, who made the trip to Moscow but remains a doubt as he tries to shake off a hamstring injury. “We’ll have to talk with the doctors,” Guardiola said of the 26-year-old Berliner. The defender came off during the 4-0 Bundesliga victory over Paderhorn last week. “We can’t substitute a defender every match and a defender generally plays the first minute to the last,” said the former Barcelona handler. French winger Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger, who have only played 23 minutes in total this season, are out while former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso could be thrown into the back-four if Boateng fails the fitness test.

Pardew under more pressure Peter Crouch’s early header against Newcastle gave Stoke City a first home English Premier League win of the season and piled pressure on Newcastle boss Alan Pardew. Crouch rose to meet a Victor Moses cross from the left in the 15th minute, the lone goal ensuring Stoke City beat Newcastle by a solitary goal at the Britannia Stadium. Newcastle were fortunate not to concede a penalty when Moses was bundled over in the area by Yoan Gouffran. Marko Arnautovic was denied by a post before Newcastle’s Jack Colback thumped against the bar late on to leave the visitor’s second bottom of the table. While Stoke move up to 11th in the log, defeat leaves Newcastle, who have only five league wins since the turn of the year, on three points from their six matches this season, second bottom in the log and supporters once again took their frustration out on manager Pardew. Papiss Cisse, who scored twice as Newcastle came from behind to draw 2-2 with Hull in their last Premier League match, was only fit enough for the bench and the visitors were reduced to long-range efforts in the first half. Cisse was brought on at the interval but, other than Colback’s late opportunity, there was little response from Newcastle as Pardew’s side slipped to a third league defeat of the

season. Newcastle owner Mike Ashley’s lawyers have said he was joking when he claimed that Pardew would be sacked if his team were defeated at the Britannia Stadium. But the manner of this defeat, with Stoke always looking more incisive and Newcastle

managing just one shot on target, will do little to reduce the negativity he will face ahead of Saturday’s trip to Swansea. Stoke manager Mark Hughes showed remorse for his under fire counterpart while crediting his side for victory. “I wish Alan Pardew well. It’s not easy, I’ve

Ibrahimovic out of Barca clash with nagging injury Paris Saint-Germain star Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss tonight’s UEFA Champions League clash with Barcelona at the Parc des Princes due to a nagging heel problem, the French club have confirmed. “As the different tests carried out this morning on the problem with his left heel were not satisfactory, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is out of the match against Barcelona,” said a statement released by PSG. Ibrahimovic, who played for Barcelona in the 2009-10 season, had already missed his club’s last two Ligue 1 games. Without him, Laurent Blanc’s side performed poorly in a 1-1 draw at Toulouse on Saturday and they are under pressure to get a result against the Catalans after opening their Group F campaign with a 1-1 draw with Ajax two weeks ago. However, Blanc said that he was not

surprised at the news that his Swedish talisman would miss the encounter and remains hopeful that his side can get a result in his absence. “This morning he was having treatment but in truth I had already started to prepare for this game knowing that he probably wouldn’t be there,” Blanc said. “It certainly won’t be easy, we know that. Last year we played difficult games without Ibra,” “We have other attacking players of great quality and we will need to compensate for his absence by producing an even better team performance.” Blanc added that Ibrahimovic faces a race against time to be ready in time for next Sunday’s home meeting with Monaco, PSG’s final outing before the October international break.

been in that situation. All you can do is work hard and he will be working with his staff to turn things around. They played well for him tonight and that will encourage him. Pardew admitted there is a lot of pressure on him while insisting he will remain strong in his job.

“There’s a lot of pressure on me and that’s reflected in the team a little bit but I’ve got to be strong and resilient. “It [my future] is out of my hands. I’m a professional manager with a contract and I’ll continue to lead the team to the best of my ability,” he said.

Kimetto warns the world World Record Holder Dennis Kimetto has warned rivals to expect another decade of his marathon virtuosity barely eight hours after he had taken the marathon into a new territory with his 2:02:57 win in the Berlin marathon on Sunday. Dennis lounged back in his chair after his evening meal and before the post-race party, reflecting on how far he had come and the road ahead. The bad news for his rivals is that the man who first burst on the international scene in 2012 is confident that, at the age of 30, he can have at least another five years at the top level. Then he thought again. “Actually, I think I could still be a very good runner ten years from now, at 40,”

said Kimetto, a quiet smile indicating this was no joke. Sitting alongside his friend and fellow runner Wilfred Kigen, Kimetto had time to reveal more of himself. What appears at first and, as the epitome of shyness, is a man with inner steel, a determination fired by both the memory of seeing the great duels of Paul Tergat versus Haile Gebrselassie on television and of a childhood where money was scarce. “We didn’t have television or radio at home, so at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney I went to the community centre in the village and watched. The memory of Haile versus Tergat in the 10,000m inspired me. I thought, perhaps I could run at that level?” wondered the new world record holder.
