Kiambu, Kajiado safe hideouts for city thugs Gangsters who commit criminal activities in Nairobi retreat to havens in neighbouring Kiambu, Machakos and Kajiado areas to avoid arrest, a new report on crime says. The Nairobi Metropolitan Area Annual Crime Report says satellite towns on the outskirts of the capital are safe havens for armed gangs due to their proximity to the city. The towns include Kitengela, Athi River, Mlolongo, Rongai, Kiserian, Kikuyu, Thika and Machakos, among others. P2

Kiambu, Kajiado safe dens for thugs FRIday, OCtober 17, 2014

From Page 1 “The suburbs and satellite towns are increasingly serving as safe havens for criminals who retreat there after committing crimes in Nairobi in order to avoid being apprehended by the law enforcement agents,” says the report. The study was sanctioned by the Interior ministry to monitor the nature, trend and magnitude of crimes in the greater Nairobi metropolitan region. The findings gained further credibility on Friday after officers of the Special Crime Prevention Unit gunned down three thugs in

Kiambu as they retreated to the town after committing a robbery in Nairobi’s Dandora estate. Security Research and Information Centre (SRIC) which conducted the investigation says theft and robbery are the most common crimes, accounting for 35.7 and 33.6 per cent respectively. Most of the crimes are committed between 6pm and 9pm with business premises being the major targets of the gangs. Mathare, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Buru Buru, South B, Lavington and Karen in Nairobi were the focus areas of the research.

The researchers found out that fear of terrorism was not widespread even with the rise in terror related threats. Compared with the crime observatory period in 2011/12, researchers discovered that robbery cases in Nairobi have risen even after a fall in the number of cases reported to police. “The drop in reporting crime translates to loss of confidence by members of the public in the police which is attributed to inaction, corruption and fear of reprisals from perpetrators,”

the researchers report. The area around Kiboro Primary School along Juja Road, Kosovo, upper sections of Gitanga Road in Lavington, City Cotton along Lang’ata road, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Kiamaiko slums in Huruma and Eastleigh were named as some of the most notorious hotspots in the city. Others were Kware, Mutindwa in Umoja One and Congo in Kawangware. The report recommends the stepping up and promotion of community policing and Nyumba Kumi initiative. Areas that had

adopted the two programmes had experienced lower crime levels. It also called for the installation of CCTV cameras to monitor movement of criminals along streets and inside commercial buildings. The move has been necessitated by the fact that “most of the areas identified as hot spots tended to have a common characteristic of being unlit.” “The study therefore recommends installation and rehabilitation of street lighting, including erection of high mask flood lights,” the report says.

Silence your cockerel or move out, couple warned

banned sound: Philip and Caroline Sutcliffe were ordered to stop their cockerel, William (inset), from crowing before 8am.

UN launches Sh88b kitty to fight Ebola

The UN has launched another urgent appeal for more funds to help fight the Ebola outbreak after its first appeal fell short of target. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said a $1billion (Sh88 billion) trust fund he launched in September has so far received only $100,000 (Sh8.8 billion). He joins a growing chorus of world leaders who have criticised global efforts to tackle the outbreak. Former UN chief Kofi Annan has said he is “bitterly disappointed” by the international response.

An England council has ordered a couple to stop their cockerel from crowing before 8am or move out of the neighbourhood. But efforts by Philip and Caroline Sutcliffe to stop William, the cockerel, from ‘making noise’ in the early hours have been of little success. “We have been told we have either got to stop him from crowing before 8am, or get rid of it by this coming Sunday,” said Sutcliffe. “I’ve tried everything to keep him quiet during the early hours, including keeping him in the dark and in a small space, but it hasn’t worked,” she said. Express, a UK newspaper, says an anonymous neighbour informed the Derbyshire Dales District Council that the cockerel’s early morning noise is a threat to health and safety.

Only yesterday, President Obama authorised the deployment of 3,200 US military reservists to West Africa to help contain the spread of the disease. They would join the 4,000 troops already in the region. Ki-Moon’s appeal came amid fears of a worldwide spread of the virus which has already killed more than 4,500 people, mostly in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Although several countries have pledged to support the struggle to contain Ebola, few have matched

This prompted the authorities to ‘serve’ William with an Antisocial Behaviour Order. Sutcliffe wonders why someone could be agitated by a natural occurrence. “I find it a bit ridiculous that someone would complain about the sound of a cockerel crowing in a rural village. Short of chopping his head off, I don’t know how I can stop him from crowing.” Sutcliffe would rather move out of the village than slaughter William. “It’s impossible to stop him from crowing. Its what cockerels do. I won’t kill him, even if they prosecute me. It looks as if I will have to try and find him a new home instead,” says Sutcliffe. Before moving to the village, they had asked the neighbourhood if anyone was uncomfortable with poultry, but none said so.

pledges with donations. Donors have given almost $400m (Sh35 billion) to other UN agencies and aid organisations but the trust fund has received pledges of just $20m (Sh1.8 billion). Only Colombia has so far paid up. The UN Special Envoy on Ebola David Nabarro said the fund was intended to offer “flexibility in responding to a crisis which every day brings new challenges”. “It allows the areas of greatest need to be identified and funds to be directed accordingly,” he said.

Punish order violators, courts urged

Rising food prices forcing people to change their diet Millions of people across the world have been forced to eat only what they can afford due to the rising cost of food, states a global survey by Oxfam International. A public opinion poll was conducted in 17 countries including Kenya, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Tanzania, UK and the USA. From the data, it was discovered that 54 per cent of people in most countries surveyed said they are not eating the same food as they did two years ago. Globally almost half of those who said their diet had changed blamed the rising price of food while only a third did it for health reasons. In

Kenya, for instance, a staggering 76 per cent of respondents said they have changed their diet with most blaming the price of food. Across the world, it was discovered that cost was, by far, the biggest food worry with 66 per cent of people globally citing it as one of their top concerns. However, in poorer countries the availability of food was much more of an issue with close to half of people in Kenya and 45 per cent in Tanzania citing it as one of their biggest food worries. “World leaders, especially leaders of powerful countries, must act now to fix our broken food system,” Jeremy Hobbs, Executive Director of Oxfam said with regard to the study.

The Law Society of Kenya wants courts to impose harsh judgments on individuals who have disobeyed orders judges issue. This follows failure by Langata OCPD to stop activity on a disputed piece of land in Karen after the High court issued the order last week. “Those disobeying court orders are asetting a bad precedent and the judges should issue contempt of court charges and send them to jail for six months,” LSK chairman Eric Mutua said.

Family planning recommended for dealing with resource strain The National Council for Population Development (NCPD) has called for the adoption of family planning measures warning that the current rate of population growth could put a lot of strain on the already scarce resources available in the country. NCPD’s director general Josephine Kibaru-Mbae says they have already launched an initiative to create awareness on the importance of having smaller families. The campaign dubbed Families for a Healthier Kenya is being spreahedaed in conjunction with USAID and seeks to rope in both youths and religious leaders to provide information to people on ways of planning their families. “Our population is growing rapidly and that may cause more strain on our already

scarce resources. As such, we are moving towards massive public education and reaching out to leaders to engage with the public about planning families,” Dr Josephine said through the agency’s spokesman David Kinyua. Although the government continues to campaign to have family sizes reduced to manageable levels, many Kenyans still face numerous challenges in adopting the practice. “I have always wanted a big family but my husband did not,’’ says Atieno. “I am aware of the family planning methods but I always forgot to take my pills and sometimes they did not work,” confessed Mary Atieno, a 36-year-old mother of six who lives in Kayole. Her husband was not happy

with the family becoming too big because he would not be able to support it so after she gave birth to the sixth child, he asked her to get a tube ligation (get her tubes tied.) Mary is a tailor while her husband is a messenger at a Sacco in town and money has not been forthcoming. “It has become hard to support our children that is why my husband has decided that at the end of the year we are moving to the village permanently, at least there life is a bit cheap, ’’ says Atieno. There are a range of family planning methods in the market today but most Kenyans are unaware of how they work. Many do not trust them and think they will have a negative impact on their bodies ¡while other say their religion does not “allow” them to take them.

“I do not trust family planning because it will make my wife sick so we have never used it,” said John Kipyegon. Kipyegon has seven children but still wants more in order to ensure his legacy lives on. He works as a watchman in the city while his family is in Eldoret, his rural home. “While I work here, they till the land at home which provides for them most of their food,” he says, “so it is not hard fending for a big family.” Maryanne Mwaniki, a system developer who is set to tie the knot to her fiancé in April, says that she is aware of family planning methods but is not sure which one is good for her. “We do not want a large family that we cannot take care of, so I think it is best we seek advice first,” said Mwaniki.

Doctors call for Ebola precaution Doctors have urged the Government to beef up efforts to minimise the growing risk of an Ebola transmission into the country. The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) says the country is yet to put in place an isolation unit and train medical staff on how to handle the deadly virus.

Judges throw out Joho degree suit The High Court in Mombasa has put to rest the controversy surrounding the authenticity of a Kampala University degree that was awarded to Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho. A three-judge bench, which struck off a petition lodged by Silas Otuke, noted that it amounted to abuse of the court process. “The arguments raised by the petitioner will result in the court being held at ransom and we cannot allow that,” Justices Christine Meoli, Martin Muya and Edward Muriithi ruled. They said the petitioner did not follow the right procedure in filing the case and declared it immature. Although Kampala University had defended the degree which Joho used to get clearance to run for the seat, the petitioner had argued that it was invalid.

CLEARED: A threejudge bench has thrown out a petition against Mombasa Governor, saying the person who filed it did not follow due process.

Teachers’ salaries review to be guided by SRC recommendations The Teachers Service Commission has any pay hike for teachers will be guided by the recommendations of Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC). This may turn out to be a blow for any hope to be reached between TSC, and the two teachers Union KNUT and KUPPET after the two unions seemed to disagree on additional time to TSC to address their demands. Cabinet Secretary of Education Jacob Kaimenyi has already promised

to consult with Treasury to seek a solution to the pay dispute that is threatening to disrupt the national examination scheduled that begins next week. “TSC will seek the advice of SRC and was informed that all negotiations with monitory implications must be sanctioned by treasury and must be economically viable and sustainable implying that what the teachers are demanding cannot be accommodated,” read a statement

from the teachers’ employer. However, the commissioner says it will still negotiate with the two teachers unions to reach some agreement. TSC and the two unions will be meeting again next week to try and break the deadlock and avoid any industrial action. Meanwhile, the Kenya National Examination Council has said that it will adjust its timetable in case of a teachers strike.

Water.org plans Sh178m projects for Kenya, Uganda Water.org plans to invest more than Sh178million in credit programmes in the next one year to ensure accessibility to safe supply and sanitation in Kenya and Uganda. The organisation has also turned to financial institutions for additional funds for the scheme. Financial institutions such as Equity Bank, Kenya Women Finance Trust, SMEP and Post Bank Uganda have already partnered with Water.org Water.org Director of International

Programmes Richard Thorsten says the projects help financial groups issue water and sanitation loans to help families take charge of the future. “By providing families with micro-sized loans to purchase water connection or toilet, Water.org is empowering them to take charge of their future. Access to larger sums of financing could help them break from the vicious cycle of poverty,” said Thorsten. Thorsten said the organization plans to host a two-day conference that will

develop solutions to lack of access to safe water and sanitation among those living in poverty. The conference will also seek to work out solutions to barriers that frustrate lending for credit programmes. MasterCard Foundation will partner with Water.org in the conference dubbed Lend for Change. Leaders from the water, sanitation and finance sectors in Kenya Uganda and Ethiopia will attend the summit.

Converse to sue 31 firms for copying shoe brand Converse, the maker of one of the most iconic shoes in the world, is suing 31 companies for copying its brand. In what is set to be an aggressive lawsuit against a number of industry giants, the shoe maker has launched one of its biggest legal attacks in almost a century. Converse accuses rivals of copying the iconic design of its popular shoes, which were first released in 1917. The company says it has sold one billion copies of the shoe and spent

hundreds of millions in ads. It has accused rival firms of making imitations to benefit from the brand’s popularity. Converse intends to sue a range of companies, including retail powerhouse, Wal-Mart and apparel maker, Ralph Lauren, for infringing on one of its 100-year-old designs. The firm has filed legal papers in New York against companies based in Canada, Australia, Italy, China and Japan.

“By filing the lawsuits, Converse is sending a clear message that they will not accept look-alike products on the market,” said Sharon Daboul, a trademark attorney at law firm, EIP, in a recent announcement for the company. Converse wants the International Trade Commission to ban the sale of imported replicas. Many of the brands have made their way to countries like Kenya and are selling in local stores.

Kenya’s cost of living is rising at a faster pace than incomes. Latest numbers from research group Ipsos shows more than half the population believe their financial lives are getting worse. Thirty-four per cent of urban residents and 37 per cent of rural counterparts say they had gone to bed hungry due to financial problems. More women (38 per cent) than men (34 per cent) confessed to have gone to bed hungry. In the survey for the third quarter of 2014, Ipsos researchers discovered that 52 per cent of Kenyans believe economic conditions in their households have become worse in the past three months. Twenty-six pc believe their economic situation has remained the same and only 21 pc have witnessed progress. Two of the most serious problems facing Kenyans are the high cost of living and unemployment. About 50 pc of Kenyans earn less than Sh10,000 a month.

Urban businesses perform better than rural counterparts despite high risk

Small businesses tend to do better in urban areas than in rural locations despite having a higher risk of failure. Ruth Nyang’ori, an economics expert form the KCA University’s Faculty of Commerce has found that while rural areas are good for business owners that want to avoid competition, urban areas are the best places to increase profits at a faster pace. “Starting and operating a small business includes a possibility of success as well as failure,” explains Nyang’ori. “Because of their small size and the exposure to risks owing to their location, a simple management mistake is likely to lead to the sure death of a small enterprise hence no opportunity to learn from past mistakes.” The Ministry of Labour and Human Resource Development says that there were about 2.8 million Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) employing 5.1 million people about a decade ago. That number has almost doubled since then. “Geographic location has its implications for access to markets and other resources like finance, skilled labour, subcontractors, infrastructure, distribution, transport logistics and other facilities,” says Nyang’ori.

smartmove Liming process boosts farmers’ earnings by detoxifying soil Farmers in Western Kenya have been making losses from their farmland’s chronically acidic soils, which are somewhat poisonous to their crops. However, a new method of applying lime to exhausted soils has changed their fortunes and rekindled hopes for planters who had previously abandoned farming. In 2008, Isaac Ochieng Okwangi from Western Kenya’s Siaya District harvested only two 90kg bags of maize from his one and a half acre plot. On the same piece of land today, Ochieng, 29, gets around 16 bags every season. His harvesting season comes two times a year. Ochieng attributes the eightfold rise to applying lime on his farm. The lime lowers soil acidity to levels that are not harmful to crops like maize and beans, says David Mbakaya a soil scientist with the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) in

Kakamega. A recent report by the AGRA-Alliance states that Kenya has over half a million hectares of acidic soils in its maize growing areas. In Western Kenya, around 57,670 hectares of soil is acidic. This is due to the use of fertilizers and high rainfall that penetrates deep into the ground and therefore makes the soil too concentrated to support the growth of crops.

Acting on the advice of KARI officials, Ochieng applied on his one and a half acres 10 bags of agricultural lime back in 2009. He was one of 50 farmers who got the lime for free when the Alliance for Green Revolution (AGRA) sponsored KARI-led trials that provided the lime. The lime costs Sh270 for 50 kg a bag from the Homalime Factory in Koru, Kisumu.

Gay film

controversy deepens

Big Brother

On the afternoon of Wednesday October 15, 2014, the executive producer of controversial gay film Stories of our Lives, George Gachara was arrested for alleged contravention of the Film and stage Plays Act by not seeking a license before shooting the film. He was then taken to the Kilimani police station and released a few hours later on a cash bail of Sh10,000. The case was heard today morning at the Kibera law court, where he was released on a bail of Sh20,000 and a second hearing set for November 3, 2014. The Kenya Film and Stage Act 2010 says that for any film to be shot in Kenya, a licence must be obtained from the Department of Film Services. To obtain the licence, copies of the script must be presented which is then reviewed by the Department which makes a decision to grant or deny

the licence. When X News reached out to Gachara yesterday, he said he could not comment on the story because it might prejudice the case in court. “I may not be able to answer some of the questions because it may prejudice the case tomorrow,” said George . In a statement on his Facebook page Gachara said in part, “My life and work have always been about standing up for things that I believe in. I am grateful for an opportunity to stand with queer people in Kenya and in Africa. I am so proud of the cast, and glad to be able to work with an amazing and conscientious team and supporters.” Stories of our lives is a film based on five true life stories from members of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transsexual Ignored (LGBTI) group. When the film makers applied for the screening license from the Kenya Film Classification Board, the film was given a restrictive rating. This means the film cannot be screened anywhere in Kenya. The board said that the film had obscenity, explicit scenes of sexual activities and promotes homosexuality which is out lawed in Kenya. In a statement, film company The Nest, which produced the film said they have been receiving requests from people asking them where they can watch the film secretly. In response the team said, “There are no secret,

He swings a sledgehammer onto the wall and after the dust has settled, two skeletons wrapped in plastic appear where the wall once was. Roarke promptly calls the wife. With accounts of recollections of people who ran the shelters and revelations of the new forensic anthropologist, she can finally put names and faces to the remains they found. Its time Africa copied US by squarely facing Ebola threat

To win the war against Ebola, Kenya and Africa must come out boldly just as the US has done (Obama cancels trip to monitor Ebola Crisis, October 16, 2014). President Obama put his people first by cancelling all commitments to discuss the three or so cases

that have been reported in his country. The US has admitted that Ebola is on their soil and are determined to contain it. West Africa never took the World Health Organisation warning of the outbreak seriously until after the death toll started to

rise. Over the weekend, a passenger from Juba collapsed and passed on after showing signs similar to those of the deadly virus. But the Government says the attack was neither Ebola nor Murgab. A week later, the Ministry of Health

has not told us what killed the young woman. Juba and Uganda have remained silent over the issue. With this attitude, how many people must die before we ask for help when we can prevent the disease? We must accept that the disease

is a challenge and tackle it with the urgency it requires. Like the Americans, we must defend our people against the killer viruses. Kenya must mobilise human and financial resources to keep the monsters at bay.

Defiant AK boss eyes IAAF seat Athletics Kenya AK president Isaiah Kiplagat says he will not relent on his quest for the International Athletics Association Federations vice president’s post in next year’s elections. The elections will be held in Beijing, China, ahead of the World Championship set for August, 2015. AK vice president David Okeyo will defend his World Cross Country chairmanship post he has held for four years. “I fail to get it when a section of people go around with an old cliché that I am too old to lead. I will quit when delegates tell me,” he said. “As for the IAAF job, I will

go for it in the next elections… hopefully I will get elected as one of the four vice presidents,” he said. Kiplagat who has been at AK’s helm for 22 years hinted this may be his last term. “I will leave but when time comes because I was elected by the delegate and I have two more years to go but for now we should work in harmony and serve the athletes of this country,” he said. Kiplagat is under pressure by 14 branch chairmen to convene a Special General Meeting (SGM) by October 31 or face ouster.

Lebron wants shorter NBA season Four-time NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James and German NBA star Dirk Nowitzki say the league needs to look at shortening its 82-game per club regular-season schedule. Both players spoke out this week in the wake of the league planning an exhibition game that lasts only 44 minutes instead of the usual 48. James and Nowitzki say it’s the length of the season, not the games in it, that causes troubles, and they would both be willing to take less money. “Less games is less concessions and less tickets and all that, but at the end of the day we want to protect the prize, and the prize is

the players,” James said Wednesday. “If guys are being injured because there’s so many games, we can’t promote it at a high level.” Indiana star Paul George will miss the upcoming season after breaking his leg in a scrimmage for the US team that went on to win the Basketball World Cup, while five-time NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant of Oklahoma City is out at least two months with a broken foot. “I’m not saying it’s because of the amount of games, but anything will help,” James said of the physical stress on players. James does not see trimming four minutes from every game as much help in that respect.

Ferrari confirm Alonso has quit Ferrari have ended speculation over Fernando Alonso’s future, with outgoing president saying he will cut short the Spaniard’s contract at the end of the season. Alonso was widely rumoured to be leaving the team he has been part of since 2010. Luca Di Montezemolo confirmed that the driver will leave on Italian TV. “Fernando is leaving for two reasons,” Di Montezemolo said. “He wants another environment. Two, because he is an age when he cannot wait to win again.” Alonso is said to have lost faith in Ferrari’s ability to produce a winning car as he sits sixth in the drivers’ championship with three

races remaining. “He was disappointed that he has not won over these last years and wanted new stimulus,” Montezemolo said. Alonso gave a hint about his Formula One future at Sunday’s Russian Grand Prix by saying the decision would seem obvious once announced and he was unlikely to drive for a Mercedespowered team. “I’m not in a hurry...I understand the curiosity, and I understand, for the fans, the news that can be around the future,” the Spaniard said. Although Alonso has a contract at Ferrari until the end of 2016, he is expected to leave at the end of the year to make way for Sebastian Vettel.

William Gallas retires from active football

Gallas has brought the curtain down on his career that spanned nearly 20 years, seeing him play for all three of London’s top clubs. The 37-year-old former Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and France defender wrapped up his glittering career, which saw him, win two Premier League titles. “It is not an easy thing to announce,” the 37-yearold said. “You always tell yourself that you can keep going, but I think today I cannot go on any longer.” Gallas, who started his professional career at Caen in 1995, won 84 caps for France, scoring five goals, including a controversial

strike in a 2-1 play-off win against Ireland that earned the French a 2010 World Cup berth. Gallas poked home from close range after being set up by Thierry Henry, who had clearly handled the ball to prevent it from going out of play. He also played the 2006 World Cup final which France lost on penalties to Italy. After playing for Marseille from 1997-2001, Gallas left for England, joining Chelsea, where he won back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006 and popped up with some important goals. He moved to Arsenal in 2006 as part of the deal

which took Ashley Cole to Stamford Bridge. Possibly his most famous moment in a red shirt came at Birmingham in 2008 when he had a tantrum and held a solitary sit-down protest in the centre circle after the Gunners conceded a late goal to draw a match they should have won. It ultimately derailed their title bid. Never one for the quiet life, he joined Tottenham in 2010. Last October, Gallas signed a one-year deal with Perth Glory in Australia’s A-League, where veteran stars such as Alessandro Del Piero plied their trade.

Stage set for Madoka marathon

IN ACTION: Onkar Singh Rai and navigator Gavin Laurence beat challenge their Group N EVOX in a past KCB Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) race. The KNRC rally will be headed to Kisumu this weekend.

Kisumu rally set for this weekend The seventh round of the KCB Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) will be starting in Kisumu this Saturday. Drivers will tear through cane fields bordering Nandi district and Kibos region in Chemase, Chemelil, Songhor, Miwani and Kobonyo. The high-adrenaline is expected to hit its crescendo during the prize giving ceremony, which is scheduled for Sunday starting 5:00pm. “The prize giving will not take place in the service

area-it’s planned to take place outside, on the spectator stage. This is a deliberate move organizers have made to enable area residents view cars at the ceremonial finish,” clerk of the course Surinder Thatthi said. The event, co-sponsored by iWay Africa, ICEA Lion and ALS, will be flaggedoff outside the KCB Bank branch in Kisumu. The finish stage will be at Chemase’s Kibos Sugar weighbridge. Last year’s spectator stage was put up at Nucleus which was quite a distance from the

service at Chemase. This year’s spectator stage isn’t on its own, as Surinder would put it. It’s part of the 29km section (4); towards the end. The spectator stage is situated behind the service area at Chemase where EMC have graded a track that will accommodate viewing of rally cars at full action. The spectator part on the 29km section 4 is an eightkilometre stretch. Competitive mileage for this rally is 150km and an approximate 90kms that make up the event’s transport

road section. The EMC round of KNRC will feature a total of seven stages three of which will be repeated and one extra stage that’s being run as the first stage of the day. The shortest stage is 13kms (CS1) and the longest 29kms. With recent torrential rains pounding the lakeside region, some sections of the route course are a little rough. But organizers Equator Motor Club (EMC) are filling up the big mudholes with murram before the big day.

The 9th Edition of the Safaricom Madoka Half marathon is set for this weekend. Over 1,000 athletes will participate. The race will be flagged off from Taita Taveta Agricultural University Centre, Ngerenyi and will include 21km half marathon, 10km race, veterans and school teams races. Race founder Marsden Madoka said the special categories including the over-45 men’s 8km race, over-35 women’s 8km race, 10km junior, 6km under-12 boys and 4km under-12 girls will receive cash prizes instead of heifers that used to be awarded. “Best locals will also be rewarded with Sh5000, Sh3000 and Sh2000

for the first three best positions,”Madoka stated. Last year’s winners Omar Declark and Vicoty Chepkemoi are among the athletes who have confirmed their participation. Winners of the 21 kilometres race will pocket Sh250,000. There will be a veterans’ race, Secondary and Technical school team races and 10-kilometre individual races as well. “We are expecting over 1,000 athletes both local and international, last year, we had 42 international athletes and we expect more this year. All preparations are in top gear and we are encouraging more people to come out and take part in the event,” said Athletics Kenya- Coast region chairman Dimmy Kisalu.

KCB gunning for mid-table finish South Africa to host Afcon after Morocco withdrawal South Africa will host the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) host after Morocco opted to withdraw themselves from hosting the 30th edition of the continental showpiece due to wide spread of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa. Morocco requested the Confederations of African Football (CAF) to postpone the tournament which was set for January next year, due to the Ebola epidemic, which CAF has turned a blind eye to. South African Football Associations (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan is set to meet with the CAF boss Issa Hayatou to discuss a way forward as South Africa will replace the North African giants. “We have the best infrastructure in the country but nothing has been confirmed,” said SAFA spokesperson Dominic Chimhavi.

Mark Odhiambo (L) of KCB tackles Patrick Oboya (R) in a past Kenyan Premier League match. KCB’s head coach Rishadi Shedu is aiming at a mid-table finish to the 2014 season.

WEEKEND FIXTURES Kenya Commercial Bank’s (KCB’s) season of two halves is set to continue when they host Chemelil Sugar at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Sunday. Despite a poor run in the first leg of the season, the bankers have pulled up their sock to rise from bottom of the table to

a mid-position slot. In the last five league matches, the Bankers have been unbeaten, collecting a total of nine points from those fixtures. Coach Rishadi Shedu, who replaced sacked Abdallah Juma earlier on in the campaign, said the remaining for matches

will be key for his side in their mid-table finish plan. “It eems all matches are like finals to us. We need to get as many points as possible to make up for our slow start to the season,” he said. “Facing Chemelil a team without a win in the last couple of matches will not be easy. If

we can stick our ground on the day will be good,” he said. Meanwhile champions Gor Mahia will play 2008 champions Mathare United aiming to protect their lead at the top on Sunday. Third placed Tusker United will host Muhoroni Youth on the same day.
