evidence brought before trial. She described the evidence of defence witness and social worker Annette Vergeer as “slapdash and disappointing”. Ms Vergeer had argued Pistorius would be “a lot more vulnerable than the normal man” in jail. Judge Masipa said she was sure prisons were equipped to cater for requirements of special needs inmates. She also said she had a “feeling of unease” at what she called an overemphasis on the athlete’s vulnerability. However, she said Pistorius had made an “enormous contribution to society” in his charity work and in changing the public perception of disability. The judge then read out a quote from previous legal opinion, saying if sentences were too lenient, the

The sentencing brings to conclusion the high-profile, seven month trial which has riveted the world. Prosecution lawyers had argued for at least 10 years sentence while their defence counterparts had requested for a custodial sentence. But the judge ruled out both, arguing that the two would be inappropriate and unmerciful respectively. Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide but cleared of murder. Judge Masipa said although she had been assisted by assessors, the decision was hers and hers alone. “Sentencing is about achieving the right balance. Sentencing is not a perfect exercise,” she said. Masipa said there must be a balance between retribution, deterrence and rehabilitation. The judge then summarised the

administration of justice may fall into disrepute. She said she found the suggestions of sentences made by defence witnesses “not appropriate”. Pistorius, 27, an amputee sprinter who became the first athlete to compete in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, killed Ms Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year. He said he shot her by mistake, fearing there was an intruder in his house in the capital, Pretoria. Ms Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, reality TV star and law graduate, was hit three times by bullets fired by Pistorius through a toilet door. Last month, Judge Masipa cleared Pistorius of murder, but convicted him of culpable homicide, saying he had been negligent.

Good Samaritan rescues man from fierce blaze A Good Samaritan was caught in camera rescuing a father trapped in a burning house in California, USA. The man from Fresco heard a woman at the scene crying for help to rescue a trapped dad. The Telegraph, a UK newspaper, says the video was captured by Beth Lederach, a motorist, who stopped to call 911. A voice of a woman was heard yelling: “My daddy’s in there - just get him out, please!” Another female voice called for help: “Oh my God no! There is a man inside… oh my God!” Men at the scene raced back and forth in confusion before the hero marched calmly into the fire and rushed out with the trapped dad on his shoulders to safety. The men congratulated the hero, who remained silent, patting his back. Lederach told the man: “You are a hero man! It was then that the firefighters arrived. The dad looked dizzy and chocked. lucky to be alive: An unidentified Good Samaritan carries a man he rescued from a blazing house in Fresco, California.

Chopper replaces Turkana KCSE paper burned by bandits A chopper carrying this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exam material left Nairobi’s Wilson Airport this morning for Turkana where bandits destroyed answer papers for 25 candidates. The bandits attacked and set ablaze a vehicle carrying papers for Kapedo Mixed Secondary School between Lokori and Kapedo trading centres.

Kenya National Examinations Council said it had released a new set of papers to the school early today. The chopper was expected to land in Turkana by about 7.30 am. Meanwhile, the fate of eight police officers who were ferrying the papers when bandits struck remains unclear. Earlier reports had indicated that one officer was injured while

others fled in the attack by the heavily armed bandits. The officers are reporred to have come under heavy gunfire from the more than 100 raiders who later torched the car in Turkana South constituency. Attacks have become frequent along the border of Turkana and Baringo counties. The head teacher for Kapedo Mixed Primary School is fighting

for life at a hospital in Eldoret after he was attacked by raiders last Friday. Majority of the schools in the region have been placed under GSU officers’ guard as insecurity threatens to disrupt the exam which officially started today. A total of 14, 936 security officers have been deployed to guard more than 8,000 centres as another 8, 188 supervisors and 27, 874 invigilators monitor the papers.

Meanwhile, candidates in other centres started writing the papers across the country with no major incidences. “The start was fine. We haven’t received any complaints and we are hoping all will go as planned till the end,” KNEC acting Chief Executive Joseph Kivilu said. A total of 485,547 candidates will sit the exam scheduled to run until November 7, 2014.

One in seven Kenyans receives ‘substantial’ amounts of money from abroad every year One out of every seven Kenyans receives substantial money transfers from abroad each year. Numbers from the Central Bank released results from a remittances survey on Friday, revealing that cash transfers from abroad have a much greater impact on Kenyan welfare, development and the economy than was earlier assumed. The study, which was conducted together with the World Bank estimates that 14 per cent of adult Kenyans regularly receive money from abroad. For Africa as a whole, cash

transfers currently reach up to US$ 30 billion (Sh2.7 trillion) annually. The latest numbers from the Central Bank show that Kenyans received a total of Sh11.5 billion this past August. From the survey. The number is far higher if the family members of the recipients also are counted. The Kenyan recipients regularly get an average of US$ 735 (Sh66,000) a year. This amount is typically transferred in seven transactions amounting to roughly US$ 105 (Sh9,400) each.

Police using Govt cars to traffic drugs: Mututho National Authority for Campaign against Drugs and Alcohol (NACADA) Chairman John Muthuto says that police officers are using government cars in trafficking drugs while others are collecting bribes to allow the illegal business to blossom. In a sensational attack on the conduct of the security officers, Mr Mututho said that their mapping of the drug trends and fake sale points have been done and the drug lords identified. “We know who is doing what on Mombasa Highway and other spots. We are analysing all situations carefully before we strike with finality,” he said during a Power Breakfast interview on Citizen TV today morning. He warned police officers involved in drug drugs and

counterfeited alcohol that their days are numbered. “We know the police collect up to Sh1.8 million from places like Umoja Innercore. This place has more than 1000 counterfeiters of alcohol,” he said. Muthuto said sacking of the police officers will not help. They will be imprisoned or be rehabilitated. “Sacking is not a solution to drugs. We have to find a way of dealing with police, who have become death cashiers. A comprehensive system to send them to jail or rehabilitation centres, not into the public. We cannot dump garbage in the public,” he said. He said alcohol abuse in schools has been hard to control because most of the bars are owned by police officers. The chairman said

Some 18 students from Faith Academy in Nairobi’s Huruma estate will miss the Kenya National Certificate of Secondary Education examinations that have begun today after the school failed to register them. The students claim they were turned away after presenting themselves for the examinations today morning and informed that only ten of their colleagues were eligible to sit the examinations. Although they insisted that they had paid their registration fees, school Principal Evans Kariuki dismissed the claims saying the students never paid the registration fee. Mr Kariuki said he had been in consultation with the relevant authorities to allow them pay the fee at a later date although the attempt was not successful.

Nigeria now declared Ebola free Nigeria has been declared officially free of Ebola after six weeks with no new cases, the World Health Organization (WHO) says. WHO representative Rui Gama Vaz while speaking in the capital Abuja, said it was a “spectacular success story.” Nigeria won praise for its swift response after a Liberian diplomat brought the disease there in July. WHO also officially declared Senegal Ebola-free on Friday after it also managed to deal with a case that was diagnosed there in late July. The outbreak has killed more than 4,500 people in West Africa, mostly in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone.

British nurse recovers from Ebola and resumes work William Pooley, the British nurse who contracted Ebola while volunteering in West Africa, has returned to Sierra Leone to resume his work. According to him, there is a “real emergency” in the country and he was “delighted” to be back on the front line. Having recovered from Ebola, his immune system should be able to fight the disease although the extent of any immunity is unclear. Doctors are not certain how

long his immunity will last or whether he is completely resistant. If a person has successfully fought off the infection, it means their body has learned how to combat the virus. Scientists do not know how long this immunity lasts - it could be lifelong or it may wane. He recovered from Ebola after receiving the experimental drug ZMapp, has donated some of his blood in case it offers clues

about how to kill the virus. The Spanish nurse who became the first person to contract Ebola outside West Africa tested negative for the virus after reportedly receiving human serum containing antibodies from Ebola survivors. A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine of survivors of the Ebola virus outbreak that occurred in 2000 in the Gulu district of Uganda suggests that immunity lasts for at least 12

years. Mr Pooley was flown back to the UK from Sierra Leone on August 24 after testing positive for the deadly virus. He was then taken to the UK’s special isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital in London. He was treated with the experimental drug ZMapp during the early stages of the infection, before the onset of internal or external bleeding and has since made a full recovery.

Geothermal power plant to cut bills by 30 pc Electricity bills are set to fall by 30 per cent by the end of the month and 50 per cent early next year after President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the world’s largest geothermal power plant. The Olkaria IV Power Plant commissioned by the President in Naivasha will add 140 megawatts of power to the national grid. This will cut down the cost of power. “You cannot fight poverty if you cannot create an environment where you can create jobs. All that cannot happen if you don’t have the essentials which is energy. The

investments that we are making will go a long way towards empowering our people and combat social ills that have inflicted this country over the years,” President Kenyatta said. The President said the launch should have been completed years ago but procurement wrangles had blocked the process. “We cannot keep on with this trend of stopping major projects which would transform the lives of our people. If there is a procurement problem, let us deal with the procurement problem,” said Kenyatta.

Nakumatt opens branch in Eastlands TUESday, OCTOber 21, 2014

exportopp

Regional Retailer, Nakumatt Holdings opened its 51st branch in Nairobi’s Eastlands area in a ceremony that coincided with the October 20 Mashujaa Day celebrations. The new outlet, Nakumatt Shujaa, located at the new Shujaa Mall, will cover a 20,000 square-foot floor space and is expected to create more than 100 new jobs. Speaking during the event, Nakumatt Holdings Managing Director, Atul

Shah said Nakumatt Shujaa customers will enjoy attractive opening prices and discounts on a variety of products throughout this week to celebrate the opening of the new branch. Shah added that the opening of the new store is aimed at meeting the retail needs of its smart shoppers residing around Donholm and its environs. “At Nakumatt, we are very excited to be registering our presence in the Donholm, Komarock, Kayole area. By

opening our second store around Eastlands, we are also keeping our standing promise to expand our network presence to meet growing customer demands,” said Shah. The fully fledged Nakumatt Shujaa store features an in store bakery, a FoneXpress store, toys and clothing stores among many other retail goods and supplies. Nakumatt currently operates 8 branches in Uganda, 4 in Tanzania and 2 in Rwanda alongside its 37 Kenya stores.

In a move that is set to employ thousands of people in the coming years, Kenya is steadily building up its garment-making industry. Officials from the International Textile Manufacturers Federation have revealed that unlike the usual trend of making clothes for local consumers, the focus this time is on exports. Kenyan factories exported garments worth $335 million (about Sh30 billion) in 2013 says Jaswinder Bedi, a Director for the Federation.

FINALLY OPEN: The Nakumatt Shuja site days before the opening ceremony.

The business has already employed 40,000 people and stands to employ even more as the sector grows. The clothing export business has developed mostly due to a trade agreement between the United States and Kenya giving the country duty-free access to the U.S. market. The agreement comes at a time when traditional African fabrics and designs are becoming a growing trend in the western fashion industry.

A report form Kenya’s Export Promotion Council (EPC) states that the market has been greatly improved by the presence of Export Processing Zones, locally-based factories set up with the objective of producing textile and garments primarily for the export market. The Council says that there are currently about 35 companies operating under the Zones. “There are also a sizeable number of smaller firms catering for both the local and export market,” says a statement released by the

Council. “The textile and garment sector in Kenya has been through turbulent times in the last ten years with the sector gaining ground in the last four years due to more emphasis on exports to the American market through the initiative of duty free and quota free access to the U.S. market in addition to permitting the use of third country fabrics in the production of garments for the market,” adds the report.

Rolls Royce faces major losses Maize prices fall 50 pc due to excess imports Trade sanctions against Russia are being felt by engineering firm, Rolls-Royce Holdings, who have warned of falling revenues. As a result, many of their customers

Maize prices have fallen by nearly 50 per cent since May, the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) has reported. The price of a 90kg bag of maize has, this month, dropped to Sh1,500 from Sh3,200 in May. As a result, retailers have lowered the price of the country’s standard 2 kg packet of maize flour to a Sh104 down from Sh118 in May. While consumers are set to benefit from the new prices, maize farmers and millers will be forced to contend with losses. NCPB Managing Director, Newton Terer says the

price drop was caused by maize imports coming in from Uganda and Tanzania, thereby lowering local prices due to an excess supply of the crop. Last year, maize-related diseases caused farmers to get rid of their infected crop in a move that caused them to incur devastating losses. Agriculture experts warned that the same problems, including unpredictable weather patterns, may also result in losses this year. This encouraged millers to stock up on imported maize resulting in an excess supply that is driving down the cost of the commodity.

not handle its profit warning as well as it could have. “The news may not have been what people wanted to hear but it is what is happening in the market,” he told the Financial Times on Monday. “We are trying to present the news as quickly as we can.” The profit warning was mostly focused on the group’s power systems and energy businesses, which have been hit by fears over the unpredictable global economy and Russian sanctions. The sanctions against Russia has led the company’s business experts to lower their expectations for 2014 stating that this year’s revenue could be 3.5 to 4 per cent lower than expected. This also caused the company’s share price to fall 7.5 per cent as the market reacted negatively to the revenue warning. “Since our interim results, the economic outlook for 2015 has become more challenging, with many of our customers experiencing worsening market conditions thus affecting our investment decisions,” said the firm in a statement.

Ringtone brings drama to MCSK gala awards The Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) awards that went down yesterday was not without its fair share of drama. From red carpet antics to rants to demonstrations. It was clearly a long night for some of the industry stakeholders. Gospel singer Ringtone picketed outside Carnivore expressing his displeasure at how the society was conducting its dealings. The displeasure came about after a rumour that Diamond was set to perform at the invite only gala and would be paid Sh 1.2 million whereas local artistes would be paid a measly Sh 50,000. He therefore felt that the local artistes were being shortchanged. This irked Ringtone to the extent he led a demonstration outside the awards venue. With placards reading, ‘Serikali saidia wasanii’, ‘We want our 30 million’ and many more. Bien of Sauti Sol while receiving an award went on a rant. He called out MCSK on the way it runs its operations. Bien also expressed his displeasure at the possibility of a foreigner (Diamond) headlining a celebration of and for Kenyan artistes. Nonini took to Facebook to voice his support for Bien’s sentiments, “I love it when niggaz go real. Big up Bien from Sauti Sol…ukweli mtupu,” said Nonini in his post. Meanwhile on the red carpet Smitta, Tony Mochama lifted singer Avril into the air risking a wardrobe malfunction to the latter’s shock. The singer had on a short hound-

stooth dress and when Smitta lifted her up, she almost flashed people who were around. The fashion at the gala was however top notch with everybody turning up in their best with flowing gowns for the ladies and well fitting suits for the men. The MCSK Awards Gala is an annual event that seeks to celebrate Kenyan artistes in the industry. Artistes who performed at the gala were Nyota Ndogo, Sanaipei Tande, D K Mwai, John Nzenze, Mercy Myra, Darlin’ P, Wyre, Them Mushrooms, Amileena, Kassongo, Ernest Kifoto, Mary Otieno, Babu Kabasellah, Bosco Mulwa, Victor Mbuvi, Abbas, Gidigidi Majimaji, Nameless and Amani. Sanaipei Tande and JuaCali performed their hit single Kwaheri that brought back memories of the good old days. Legend, John Nzenze took to the stage with Taxi Driver and proved that he could still command a crowd. Darlin’ P of the four one one fame who could forget him? He did not disappoint and wowed the crowd. There was also the Unbwogable duo of Gidigidi and his equal half Majimaji who still commanded the stage. Jaguar took home the biggest award of the highest earning artiste in 2014. Even as artistes were feted, the show was too wordy and long. Seasoned sound engineers had issue with their lighting and sound and it almost seemed as if the emcees were not in sync while the female host seemed to think she was the star of the day.

Sabina out, Alusa nominated, is Kenya targeted? Kenya’s Sabina was axed out of Big Brother Hotshots last Sunday together with Uganda’s Esther and Nigeria’s Lillian. Clearly, Sabina wasn’t ready to leave yet as she hinted to the eviction show host IK that she hoped there was another house where those evicted were taken to. Sadly, this was not the

case. Our girl is back home. Housemates were baffled by the exit of the three ladies. Tanzania’s Idris could not bottle up the pressure of the evictions and nominations. Idris was so close to Sabina and Esther that the thought of their eviction brought tears to his eyes.

Alusa is one of the seven housemates up for possible eviction this week. Ellah, Laveda, JJ, Permithias, M’am Bea and Macky2 join Alusa on the nomination list. Had Nhlanhla not won the head of House task, his fate would be in the votes of Africa as well. Is Kenya being unfairly targeted?

What if man could live forever? According to the Kikuyu feeble, man used to die and resurrect. Ngai, the Kikuyu God, used to communicate with man through animals, who were his messengers. One day, Ngai decided to curse death out of man because he had suffered enough. He called the chameleon and told him to go to earth and tell man, he will never die, but live to fill the earth. Rose Mwangi, a writer of Kikuyu feeble, quotes Ngai’s message: “Go. Tell the people that from now on they will not die. They will bear more children and the land will be populated.” As usual, the chameleon walked down slowly in fear of stumbling and losing the message. Upon reaching the earth, chameleon found people anxiously waiting for the message from their creator. As usual, chameleon started delivering his message slowly. “I wa-was-was to-told, I wa-wa-was to to-told...” Ngai saw the message was delaying. He sent a fast moving bird, Nyamindigi. Nyamindigi flew and found the chameleon still unable to deliver the words. In his swift delivery, Nyamindigi reversed the message that God had said man will die and vanish from the face of the earth. Ngai could not retract the words. And that is why man can never live forever like before!

Most people usually go to art exhibitions and fairs with a total blind eye, unaware of what must be done to get the most out of such events. Liking a piece of art should not be our sole basis of buying it. There are more factors to consider before parting with your hard earned money. Before going to an art fair or exhibition, ensure you are well informed about the artist showcasing. Your plans meet with harsh opposition today, Scorpio. You’ve been going along at a slow and steady pace, but you will find that abrasive tension arises the more you try to force your will on others. Gridlock is quite likely due to the fact that there are strong forces coming to a head.

sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21

Getting your opinions out now may stir up the maelstrom even more, but ultimately it’s for the best, Sagittarius. There is an explosive tone in the air right now that’s difficult to ignore. You need your strong will to combat the abrasive forces at work today.

Act on SRIC report to stem insecurity The Government must act on a report showing that satellite suburbs are retreat centres for criminals in the city of Nairobi (Kiambu, Kajiado safe hideouts for city thugs October 17, 2014). It has become a norm for such critical reports to be published

and shelved. This leads to recurrence of such vices. As the country strives to attain a 24-hour economy, insecurity is a critical threat. The public and the Government must join hands to ensure the economy gets a boost by implementing

recommendations of the report. The economy cannot flourish under insecurity given that the survey shows businesses are the biggest targets of the gangs. The tendency to increase the number of police is a positive move, but may not be of higher

significance than smoking the gangs out of dens. Security Research Information Centre (SRIC) report says community policing and Nyumba Kumi initiatives have recorded a measure of success in Kiambu and Machakos

counties. The public must support the policy because the government alone cannot guarantee security. Residents must be part of solution to the problem.

Tusker blame officials for Muhoroni match debacle Kenyan Premier League (KPL) on Sunday witnessed a rare moment of madness after the clash between Tusker and Muhoroni Youth was abandoned after the brewers were accused of fielding 11 players. The game played under floodlights at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, was called off on 75 minutes as rivals traded blames. “Such things should be detected by the referee and his assistant. Unknowingly we had more players on the pitch at the same time, but I believe match officials need to be extra careful,” said Tusker coach Francis Kimanzi. Centre referee Andrew Juma was forced to call off the match the Brewers were leading 2-1, after Muhoroni players protested over Tusker’s ‘congested field’

The confusion arose as Kimanzi was prepared to introduce Dennis Nzomo for the second goal scorer Clifford Alwanga before the two were spotted on the pitch by Muhoroni skipper Abbas Akinyemi who alerted Juma. The win could have seen Tusker trim second placed Sofapaka’s gap to two but will have to wait on KPL’s decision on the match. This marks another strange twist to the domestic title race that seems destined again to the boardroom. Fourth official, Badr Yassin, failed to spot Alwanga had not left the field before Nzomo stepped into the fray, sparking the fracas. “This is shocking and we shall look at the referee’s and match commissioner’s reports. If we can’t resolve the matter internally, we shall take it to the committee to decide,” Yassin said.

extra trouble? Clifford Alwanga was reportedly substituted but failed to leave the pitch in the Tusker-Muhoroni clash at Kasarani.

Rai in Cloud Nine after KCB Kisumu rally win Underdog Rajbir Rai, 24, clinched his second win of the 2014 Kenya National Rally Championship with victory at the penultimate KCB Kisumu Rally. The son of legendary Sarbi Rai took the lead in the third section at Songhor before momentarily losing it to hard charging former champion Carl Tundo in the fourth

section. He wrapped up the victory after the Tundo suffered multiple punctures. “It’s simply breath-taking.. beating such heavyweights is phenomenal for me. I still can’t believe it,” he said And with just the Guru Nanak Rally to spare next month, the KNRC title race has been narrowed down to a twohorse race pitting Tundo and

reigning crown holder Baldev Chager. Chager was lying second after the second stage but had his run stymied by a puncture in the third stage. Tundo settled for second despite a storming charge run in the lakeside region as 60 year-old veteran Azar Anwar sealed the podium in an ageing ex-Cavenagh EVO8.

Gor nearly there, says skipper TUESday, OCTOber 21, 2014

ACTION: Gor Mahia’s Baba Kizito in action against Mathare United Whyvonne Isuza Arena.

Two wins from the remaining three matches is all champions Gor Mahia need as they seek to retain the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title following a 1-0 win over Mathare United at City Stadium on Sunday. But Captain Jerim Onyango has urged teammates to win the title earlier by beating second placed Sofapaka next weekend. “The race is very stiff, but I have a lot of confidence in our team.. let’s make it easier by beating Sofapaka,” he said. Gor moved to 54 points from 27 matches to re-establish a four-point advantage above their nearest challengers. The match at City Stadium was settled in the 34th minute when an unmarked George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo headed home Dan Sserunkuma’s pinpoint cross. “We played well in a tough match. But we are taking one match at a time,” coach Frank

Nuttal said as he lavished praises on the goal scorer. “Odhiambo (George) is doing well. He is getting more confident and it is working for him,” he said. Next weekend’s top of the table clash will therefore be a potential title decider given that if Gor Mahia win they will attain 57 points effectively locking out Batoto ba Mungu from the title race with two matches to spare. In the relegation battle, second from bottom City Stars fell 2-0 to Sony Sugar away in Awendo to stay four points behind KCB, who also sunk 2-1 to Chemelil at Kasarani. Samuel Onyango accounted for both of Sony’s goals. At Kasarani, Meshack Karani and Hamisi Mwinyi were Chemelil’s goal scorers. The bankers’ consolation goal came from Raymond Murugi.

South Africa not ready for AFCON South Africa is not ready to host the Africa Cup of Nations in January if Morocco withdraws because of the Ebola epidemic, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula has said. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) reportedly approached South Africa, Ghana and five others countries ahead of a November 2 meeting to decide on the future of the continent’s premier football event. “Hosting AFCON (Africa Cup of Nations) is a NO NO,” the Minister tweeted. He told South African media that the country had a responsibility to help fight to help fight the Ebola epidemic that has killed more than 4,500 people, mainly in West Africa, with the UN predicting a surge in deaths and cases. “Even before taking the matter

to cabinet, I can tell you unambiguously and categorically that hosting is a no no,” he told South African media. “We do not have a ready-made abundance of resources to be shifted to AFCON. We did it (host the 2013 AFCON) in solidarity with Libya last year. Our budget cycle will not allow us to host the (2015) AFCON. It is totally impossible. We would like to give this one a pass,” We will share the responsibility to fight Ebola -- we are not immune to that. We must be prepared to share our skills, our doctors, to reinforce the research to find a vaccine,” he added. South Africa was among seven countries sounded out by the CAF as possible replacements should Morocco pull out.

The 2013 Kenya Hockey Union Men’s premier league champions beat USIU-A Odoshe 3-0 in the

men’s final while USIU-Spartans overpowered Telkom Orange Young Rover 2-1 in a shootout to lift the women’s title. “We played very well in the tournament given the opposition we had, it was a good performance psychologically as we head into the finals matches of the season,” said Police team manager Tom

Odeng. This was Police’s third title coming after a poor outing last year where they lost to Sikh Union in the finals. Police took a 2-0 lead at half time through Nelson Ochieng and Brian Saina before Olivier Ochenje added a third in the second half to hand Police the title.

In the semis, Police beat Sikh Union (Nairobi Simba) 6-0 while USIU- A Odoshe saw off Wazalendo Tsavo 1-0 in the other semi. Shikh Union had earlier beaten Mvita XI 3-2 in penalty flicks after a barren draw in regulation time. Wazalendo Tsavo beat USIU-A Deno 2-0 in the other quarters. USIU-A Spartans salvaged the

pride for the Thika Road University side when they beat youthful Telkom Orange Young Rovers 2-1 in penalty flicks. Rovers, a feeder side to Telkom Orange surpassed the expectations of many by reaching the final after the main team was knocked out in the semis.

Angry AFC fans mar Mashujaa Day clash with Sofapaka TUESday, october 21, 2014

hooligans in charge: AFC leopards were accused of marring their GOtv Shield semi finals clash with Sofapaka after the latter scored a second goal at the 86th minute.

Hooligans marred Sunday’s GOtv Shield semi-final between cup holders AFC Leopards and Sofapaka as the tie aborted in the 86th minute at Nairobi City Stadium. Hell broke loose when Anthony Ndolo scored a fortuitous goal after a free kick crept through Leopards’ defensive wall to give Sofapaka a 2-0 lead. A section of Leopards fans then started hurling objects into the pitch as match officials, players and team officials took cover at the centre of the pitch. Police had to fire tear gas canisters at the trouble makers who hit back at the law enforcers with all kinds of missiles.

Fans soon raided the pitch as several sustained injuries in the ensuing melee. Sofapaka scored the opening goal in the 27th minute when Enock Agwanda raced to a through ball and beat on-rushing Patrick Matasi with a low shot. In the first semi-final clash at the same venue, former Premier League side Posta Rangers edged out West Kenya 10-9 in a marathon post-match penalty shootout. The two teams had settled for a scoreless draw in regulation time. West Kenya captain Evans Bengo’s second penalty was brilliantly saved by Rangers’ keeper Ian Otieno after the rival teams had each scored 11 times from the spot.

KCB await Quins in Impala floodies finals Kenya Commercial Bank are a match away from defending Airtel Impala Floodlit title. The bankers meet Kenya Harlequin in the finals on Saturday at the Impala Club. The teams eased past semi-final opponents on Saturday at Impala Club in chilly weather. KCB earned sweet revenge against Nakuru whom they have never beaten in a competitive game since 2011 by winning 25-21. “Beating Nakuru who beat us twice last season was sweet revenge… now we have to focus on playing in the finals and defending our title,” said Curtis Olago. KCB out-muscled Nakuru at the scrums and mauls which resulted in two second half tries. Nakuru had early quick and scintillating runs in KCB’s territory that highly

exposed their backline marshalled by Esau Otieno. Nelson Oyoo’s opening try for Nakuru in the fifth minute broke the deadlock after he slipped past a packed KCB rear guard. Allan Odiyo converted for a 7-0 lead. Five minutes later, KCB had a forced substitution when Ken Moseto suffered a concussion and was replaced by Michael Omondi. Efforts by the bankers’ technical bench to have Moseti return were futile as match officials ruled out the request. In the 19th minute, Otieno kicked over a penalty for KCB but squandered the second in the 22nd. KCB eventually took the lead at the half hour mark from try by winger Collins Wanjala which was converted by Otieno for a 10-7 lead.

Kenya rider dies in Drone pilot arrested Philippines race clash for flying over Etihad

Kenyan rider John Muya Njoroge has died in a collision at the Tour of Matabungkay, Philippines, over the weekend. The 30-year-old died on Saturday at 10am when he collided with an on-coming car. Muya, a leading cycling figure who represented Kenya in Glasgow at the Commonwealth Games,

over two months ago, was killed in a crash at the Tour of Matabungkay. He was a member of the Safari Simba riders that was founded by David Kinja. He gallantly led riders in search for rare medals and was the best placed Kenyan at position 25 at the men’s individual time last August. His performance kept his dream alive of chasing

a ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympics with a possible stop in Congo Brazzaville for the All Africa Games next year. Muya, a third place finisher at the 2012 Tour of Rwanda, had won the 10km time last Friday. He later carried the yellow leader’s jersey to the first road stage of the event. He is survived by a widow and a son.

A suspected drone pilot has been arrested after a device was flown over a packed football stadium. The 41-year-old man was held in the car park of an Asda supermarket near Manchester City’s Eastlands Stadium after reports of a drone flying over a stand during the Premier League champions’ 4-1 win against Tottenham on Saturday. The man was arrested on suspicion of breaching air navigation order and bailed for two months, while Greater Manchester Police,

who released a photograph of the small white drone, are continuing their investigations. Chief Inspector Chris Hill said: “The drones could pose a threat to crowd safety and potentially cause alarm in crowded areas. “People may see this as a minor offence but it is a breach of the Air Navigation Order which is prosecuted by the Civil Aviation Authority.” The incident comes after a drone with a greater Albanian flag was flown over the stadium during Serbia’s clash with their neighbours in Belgrade.

BLIND ACT: Manchester United’s Daley Blind celebrates after his 87th minute strike that rescued a point for his team at the Hawthorns.

Daley Blind’s first premier league goal rescued spluttering Manchester United with a dramatic late equaliser in last night’s 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns. United’s erratic display was another reminder to van Gaal that his is still a piece of work. The result leaves united lying sixth in the log, 10 points behind Chelsea, but van Gaal claims the gap could still be clawed back. “Call me arrogant but we can still catch Chelsea. I have done it before,” van Gaal said, The draw leaves van Gaal with only one more point than David Moyes achieved after eight games last season. United face Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal in the next three games. They twice

trailed to West Brom, who scored through Stephane Sessegnon and Saido Berahino. Blind curled home from the edge of the area late in the 87th minute to add to Marouane Fellaini’s first goal for the club. “I don’t think West Bromwich Albion created many chances, I think zero, and we gave the two goals away.” “We created four chances in the first half and seven in the second half. I am happy about our playing style but not happy with the result,” he added. He brought on Fellaini to replace Ander Herrera at half-time, but said he made the decision after only a few minutes of the match. “We have to look also for physical talents and maybe that’s our problem,” he said.
