Government plans to decongest Nairobi through a metropolitan transport authority can proceed after governors whose counties are expected to be involved in the project pledged their support. Governors of Nairobi, Kajiado, Kiambu, and Murang’a on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government to pave way for the formation of a Nairobi Metropolitan Transport Authority. The authority will oversee the implementation of the mass rapid transit system within the city and surroundings. Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua was represented by County Executive Committee member for roads and transport Kioko Luka. The system seeks to decongest Nairobi and is expected to pass through satellite towns of Ruiru, Thika, Kikuyu, Machakos, Kitengela, Athi River and Limuru.

Governors back metropolis plan From Page 1 Once in place, the authority will recommend policies on pricing and investments, financing equipment and related traffic management systems. Development partners will be expected to work with the authority through representatives of all stakeholders. Key components of the project include the expansion and upgrading of highways, service and access roads from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport

through Nairobi to Rironi on the Northern Corridor transport system. Cabinet Secretary for Transport Michael Kamau said once implemented, the system will be the long-term solution to the chronic traffic congestion of main roads in Nairobi. “We should not politicise the project which is meant for the good of the country,” he said. He said development partners, including the World Bank, had pledged funds for four major

corridors out of the five that are set for improvement in the new plan. But Kajiado Governor David Nkedianye said the plan needs a review claiming it had ignored his county that has witnessed sporadic growth in population due to its strategic position from Nairobi. “A project of this magnitude needs consultation and they come out clear on the issue of equity. In terms of growth, Nairobi is moving to the south at a very rapid rate,” he said. Nkedianye attributed

his county’s rapid growth to its proximity to the capital city. The project will be implemented by agencies working for the ministries of Roads and Transport. The departments include the Kenya National Highways Authority, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority and Kenya Railways Corporation. The World Bank and other partners such as the African Development Bank, European Union, Japan and China, are helping Kenya to modernise

its transport system. The development will involve the removal of barriers to a more dynamic business climate in Kenya and the wider East African region. Even with a poor road network, Nairobi is still regarded as East Africa’s business More on this story at hub. However, Kamau warns that the position may not last for long if the transport network problems www.capitalfm.co.ke persist.

Washington Post’s Watergate scandal editor Ben Bradlee dies

WELL-DONE: President Barack Obama awards Bradlee with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.

Ben Bradlee, the editor of the Washington Post newspaper during the Watergate scandal that toppled President Richard Nixon, has died aged 93. The newspaper has reported that Bradlee died at his Washington home of natural causes. As executive editor from 19681991, Bradlee was credited with transforming the Post into one the most respected newspapers in US. In 2013, he received the nation’s highest civilian honour - the Presidential Medal of Freedom. “For Benjamin Bradlee, journalism was more than a profession - it was a public good vital to our democracy,” President Barack Obama said in a statement released by the White House on Tuesday evening. “A true newspaperman, he transformed the Washington Post into one of the country’s finest newspapers, and with him at the helm, a growing army of reporters published the Pentagon Papers, exposed Watergate, and told stories that needed to be told - stories that helped us understand our world and one another a little bit better,” Obama

said in his condolence message. “Ben Bradlee was the best American newspaper editor of his time and had the greatest impact on his newspaper of any modern editor,” said Donald Graham, the former publisher of the Washington Post. Bradlee who fought in the US Navy during World War II, became a reporter in the 1950s. He soon became close friends with then senator and future President John F Kennedy. He rose to the Washington Post Managing Editor’s seat in 1965 and was promoted to Executive Editor three years later. He played a key role in toppling President Richard Nixon in 1974 by encouraging journalists to relentlessly pursue the unfolding story in which some of Nixon’s closest aides became involved in illegal activities. This was followed by a political coverup in which the president was implicated. The story of the newspaper’s coverage of the Watergate scandal was later portrayed in the film, All The President’s Men, with Bradlee’s role played by Jason Robards.

Teenager scales 52-storey skyscraper without safety gear

A German teenager has stunned the world by scaling Hong Kong skyscrapers without safety equipment. Andrej Ciesielski of Munich climbed up the 52 floors of China Online Building, in Hong Kong, and the 40-storey Yat Chau International Plaza, with his camera. He was joined by fellow

Russian dare-devil roofer Alexander Remnev. The two normally captured their experiences using a GoPro camera strapped onto Ciesielsk’s head. Ciesielsk, 17, said he is always thrilled by dangerous moves, which he started from cranes to small tops before going for giant buildings.

“I do roofing because I love it. It makes me feel free. The first time I sat on the edge of a roof was a real adrenaline kick but now it’s become quite normal to me. I’ve never had an accident because I’m always very careful and I think twice before doing anything. “I’ve been doing this for just over a year now. I started in

Munich with little cranes and then moved onto rooftops,” he says. He gets to the top of some buildings through elevators before accessing the tops using emergency exits. “Hong Kong roofing is easy; you just go into the building find your way to the elevator go up to the last floor...

“...Then all you need to do is find the emergency exit to get out to the top, 90 per cent of the doors to the roof are open.” The thrill seeker plans to rock skyscrapers in US soon. “I loved Hong Kong but I’d really love to go to New York soon… that would be incredible,” he says.

Gang guns down Mpesa dealer

Kenyans using the social media for professional services Kenyans are beginning to see the social media as more than just a casual tool used for social purposes. A survey conducted by the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) has found that Kenyans are moving away from older modes of communications such a short message service (SMS) alerts, email and postal mail as they adopt new social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter In fact, those using these platforms have communicated with professional service providers like banks since at least 19 out of around 50 lenders have social media presences, mainly

A woman was shot dead in a robbery attack at an Mpesa shop at Mihang’o area in Dandora, Nairobi. The thugs grabbed the woman’s handbag and shot her at close range before fleeing on foot. Speaking during an earlier media briefing in Nairobi, he added that Banks are increasingly using the Web to convey product and marketing information, company news, industry news, and to respond to customer complaints. Olaka said that customers are quickly raising their issues through social media making the sites important avenues for the banks to build relationships with their customers.

UoN students told to remain calm ahead of new VC’s naming

Chairman of the Students Organisation of Nairobi University (Sonu) Babu Owino when he warned the government against interfering with the new VC’s hiring on Sunday.

Students and staff of the University of Nairobi have been urged to remain calm as they eagerly await the naming of the institution’s new Vice Chancellor. Council chairman Idle Farah appealed to the university community to give Education Cabinet Secretary Prof Jacob Kaimenyi time to appoint one of the four candidates the council recommended for appointment. There has been heightened speculation on who succeeds outgoing VC Prof George Magoha since it was announced last month that he will retire in December after serving a 10-year term. Students and staff unions have claimed the Government plans to appoint a particular candidate as the

next VC. But yesterday, Dr Farah allyed the fears and said they had forwarded names of professors Peter Mbithi, Agnes Mwang’ombe, Isaac Mbeche and Lucy Irungu for consideration of appointment to the seat. Mbithi who is the current deputy VC in charge of academics scored 83.5 per cent in the interviews conducted last week with Prof Mwango’ombe coming second with 77 per cent. Both Mbeche and Irungu scored 68 per cent. “I kindly ask the university community to remain calm for it is still premature to make such conclusions,” Farah said. Prof Kaimenyi said he had just received the list and would study it before making the appointment.

The assembly convened on Tuesday after MCAs got the mace from police where Adul had taken it for safe custody.

Kimaiyo dares LSK over Lamu curfew Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo has ignored threats by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) to sue him over a new extension of the Lamu curfew. LSK had warned that they would go to court to challenge the curfew order should Mr. Kimaiyo extend it for the third time. But a defiant Kimaiyo ignored the threats and extended the curfew by another one month to November 23, 2014 to allow the police normalise the security situation in Lamu County. It means residents of the coastal region will remain indoors between 6.30pm and 6.30am daily. While issuing the extension orders yesterday in Nairobi, Kimaiyo also declared the expansive Boni and adjoining forests prohibited areas. “The extension comes against the backdrop of the security situation in the county which has not fully normalised and we are still having alerts of insecurity in a number of areas,” he stated. “I hereby strongly caution members of the public to desist from venturing into

Auditors to probe Nairobi Water Co. Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) has been placed under fresh forensic probe amid allegations of financial misappropriation, poor maintenance of human resource register and flawed procurement procedures. The new forensic investigation which is being undertaken by Ernst and Young was started on October 6. Nairobi County government wrote to Athi Water Services Board on September 15, 2014 requesting for a fresh forensic audit to verify the claims. Early this month, Athi Water and Services Board commissioned Ernst and Young, an international audit firm to carry out the probe on the allegations. When reached for comment yesterday, NCWSC Managing Director Engineer Philip Gichuki said that he is not aware of any financial queries.

“All our operations have been above board and we welcome the probe,” Gichuki said. Among the key areas the probe will focus on is the manner in which multimillion tendering system and awarding was done, alleged diversion of finances from other line agencies, exaggerated human resource register and water billing systems. NCWSC has been dogged by claims of poor meter readings, exaggerated water bills and poor maintenance of sewer systems. “We are doing the best we can to ensure all city residents are not affected by the rainy season,” he added. Nairobi has experienced perennial deteriorating sanitation due to poor drainage systems. The water company is also grappling to contain vandals of manhole covers which are normally sold to scrap metal dealers.

residents. The fishermen prefer to fish at night and that is their right. Lamu is also primarily a tourist destination. Yet what message is Kimaiyo sending out to the world? Is he saying that he is incapable of restoring law and order in the coastal county after four months?

Would you vacation in a spot where your freedoms are restricted?” Mutua posed. The IG however, said police were acting on intelligence reports, arguing they were yet to arrest all those who were involved in the attack that left close to 100 dead killed in June. “That place requires

continuous extension of the curfew so long as some information is still coming out very strongly that we have some insecurity alerts from here and there,” he pointed out. “Nobody can ignore any security alert that is there and direct the county to operate normally,” Mr Kimaiyo said.

City Park’s serial killer killed

A man believed to be behind the serial killings in Nairobi’s City Park area has been killed. He was knocked down by a speeding car as he escaped from police who were pursuing him. Police say they had laid an ambush at the park at about 5am today when the man emerged from a bush armed with a rungu and a metal bar. The man then tried to escape when he saw police prompting a chase. Police believe he has been behind the killings, the latest of which involved four people whose bodies were found at the park over the weekend. The four included a woman and police have said they were all pedestrians who were pursuing their various errands when they were attacked and killed.

Matiang’i terms ICT critical in Vision 2030 growth agenda Information Communication and Technology (ICT) is a key ingredient in transforming Kenya into a middle-income economy by 2030. Addressing the 2014 Plenipotentiary Conference in South Korea, Information Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said the Government recognises the role ICT plays in development. He said Kenya will work closely with other member states to advance the digital agenda. “ICT is a key catalyst that can enable countries transform their economies and drive socio-economic progress,” said Matiang’i. Matiang’i urged members to promote infrastructure sharing and reduce licensing fees for rural network rollout to improve the data market. “Operators must re-look models by developing low-cost off-peak packages, scaling up compelling applications, and making data-enabled handsets available more cheaply. The measures will boost the ICT revolution world-wide and fast-track achievement of Vision 2030,” he said. He said M-Pesa has revolutionised the banking industry and has played a crucial role in the promotion of e-commerce. He asked ICT leaders to develop ways of harmonising policies and legal frameworks to create a safe and inclusive global village, including an offline population.

Consumer rights SA fitness firm to cash in on Kenya’s robust middle-class South African health and fitness company, Virgin Active, plans to highlight Kenyan laws that frustrate investment in new markets. “African investors often have to deal with under-developed markets, starting off a low base, at times stringent legislation on property rights and heated competition from local players,” says South African economist Ray Mahlaka. In some cases, consumers miss out on new, sometimes affordable and higher quality products and services when new players are locked out of the market. Virgin Active plans to overcome the barriers and cash in on Kenya’s rising middle class. Higher incomes have given Kenyans access to lifestyle-associated services like health and fitness

centres, Mahalka says. “We offer a great product and reasonable pricing. We are looking at East and West Africa. The ease of doing business is paramount to us and we hope to conclude something in the next two weeks in Nairobi,” said Virgin Active Executive, Herman de Beer. Speaking at the African Property Investment Summit last week, De Beer said Virgin Active knows what Nairobi consumers need and is confident of going beyond the South African market. The key challenge for South African investors with African strategies is understanding consumers in respective economies, says Diane Laas, analyst for Investec asset management’s frontier and emerging market equities division.

French oil giant Total’s boss dies in Moscow air explosion The chief executive of the third largest oil company in the world, Total, has died. He had been Total’s chief executive since 2007 and was highly regarded in the oil sector. During his tenure, he successfully

defended the company against allegations of corruption over the UN oil-for-food programme in Iraq. He also maintained the company’s investments in Burma and Iran despite US sanctions against the countries. He maintained ties with Russian energy market, making Total one of the biggest foreign investors in Russia despite Western sanctions against Moscow over

the Ukraine crisis. Investigations into the crash are looking at possible mistakes by air traffic controllers and actions of the driver of the snow plough, who is believed to have been drunk. De Margerie’s jet was due to fly to Paris from the Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow.

Emirates flight expansion plan to create more jobs for Kenyans WEDNESday, OCTOber 22, 2014

Fly Emirates has started a flight expansion plan to tap into emerging markets between Africa and Asia, a move that will create more employment opportunities in the two continents. Speaking during the African Global Business forum in Dubai, the airlines President Tim Clark said the company

aims at increasing flight frequencies and destinations to cover emerging trade opportunities in the next 10 years. Less than two months ago, the UAE announced it will be offering direct employment opportunities to Kenyans. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Cabinet

Secretary, Amina Mohammed, later announced the UAE consulate had agreed to allow employers to directly recruit from Kenya. Clark said the company’s investment in Africa is currently more than Sh622 billion with an operating cost surpassing Sh178 billion from the 22 passenger and six

dedicated freighter destinations into Africa. Africa has in the recent past warmed up to the East in seeking developmental partnerships. Meanwhile, Clark said good governance and a positive business environment will boost trade ties between Asia and Africa in the future.

In the last five years, the company has ferried more than 1.6 million passengers and cargo worth 40, 000 tons between Africa and China. It projects to increase its seats to 8.5 million by 2020. Currently, more than half a million Africans stay in Dubai with about 800,000 visiting the city in 2013.

THE SKY IS THE ONLY LIMIT: Fly Emirates has started a flight expansion plan to tap into emerging markets between Africa and Asia, to create more employment opportunities in the two continents.

Former accountant now earns Sh100,000 rearing red worms

What if we told you that worms are paying people’s bills out there? Peter Kanyagia is earning up to Sh100,000 every three months rearing and breeding red worms. Kanyagia, a former accountant ventured into his worm exploits five years ago, when he realised that red worms were a precious agricultural commodity on high demand by organic farmers who use them to create manure. The process of using worm on farms is called vermicomposting. These worms eat garbage like paper, fruits, vegetables, egg shells, and ground coffee, excreting waste, which is used as a nutrient-rich compost to fertilize plants and vegetables. This fertiliser contains all the nutrients essential for plant growth including useful substances like nitrogen, phosphate, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, and zinc. “I am an open minded person. I first learnt about the importance of red worms through training at Jomo Kenyatta University,”

explained Kanyagia. After equipping himself with the essential knowledge, Peter who was before then farming on small-scale basis set out to start putting the theory into practice. “I bought five kilograms of red worms at a cost of Sh2,500 and set the ball rolling,” he said. Kanyagia has, over the last four years become a red-worm breeder, whose pool of clients has surpassed his supply. He has now built about five breeding ‘beds’ for the red worms in his

farm. Kanyagia says each of his five units can produce about 20 litres of fertiliser in a month and with a litre retailing at about Sh100. This translates to Sh2,000 per bed. In addition, one can harvest 20kgs of red worms. The market price for a kilo is Sh2,500 Peter offers his at Sh1,000 and together with his five beds, makes about Sh100,000 after every three months.

op hip-hop artiste Juliani is a jack of all trades. He is an environmentalist, humanitarian, activist and a rapper per excellence. The controversial rapper is constantly looking for ways and ideas to empower the youth through his music. It is for this reason that he now wants to open up an arts school, incubation space and a radio station all in Dandora. “I believe that arts can get people into gainful employment,’’ Juliani told XAccess. He believes that by starting up this hub, the youth will spend their time in productive endeavors instead of engaging in crime. The hub will include an art school and a radio station plus it will also be able to facilitate small businesses by giving the youth capital. Further, Juliani’s hub will also house an ultra-modern library where young people can drop in after school to revise, read and gainfully catch up with one another. The radio station, he says, will host content that is educational with a bias to news,

Hip hop and Kenyan Music. “The radio station will mostly be about using media positively to grow people,’’ Juliani discloses. The artiste chose Dandora as the base of the hub because it is a central place and many young people can easily access the estate. He also said that some of the best hip hop artistes started out in Dandora making the area the most talent rich location. In partnership with other institutions Juliani hopes to make the hub the go to place for arts and music. He has already secured a two storey building and hopes that work on it will start soon. “We have started partnering with other institutions like Brookehouse which is helping us in setting up the curriculum and training individuals who will be dealing with the hub on a day to day basis,” Juliani hopes the hub will be up and running by early next year. “We have completed the first phase of fundraising by raising the money through 1% Club,” said Juliani. The people who will get into the

programme will be screened and if found deserving get a chance to study at the arts school. “We will not just take anybody, you have to show you are qualified or have the passion and drive to follow through with your chosen discipline,” he says. The hub is a stronger foundation for his Mtaa Challenge movement and continues the vision the movement had when it started. On his music, Juliani recently launched his third album, Exponential Potential currently available at Orange stores. He says he collaborated with Orange because they nod to his ideologies. “I plan to do a proper album launch for Exponential Potential in March 1st 2015’’

In the history of Big Brother Africa, Biggie has never sang for anyone but something about Ellah charmed him into singing or rather croaking a birthday. It got Africa thinking. The former Miss Uganda was so high on joy that she couldn’t help but scream and sing her heart out. Surely, the poor girl deserved a soothing after being in the line

of nomination fire subsequently. Birthday girl’s night almost overturned when Idris, from Tanzania grilled her over her close friendship with Ghana’s Kacey Moore. A perplexed Ellah went to face Kacey and fed him on the rumors of their alleged ‘thing’. Kacey was so angry that he ordered Ellah out of his face. Any married man with a child would react like this to such gossip, right? Housemates are getting for tonight’s fashion extravaganza. Africa can’t wait to see how this talented bunch fair tonight. Will they scoop their 100 % wager?

Adding fun space with a deck

a deck DIY

Homeimprovement

Having fun with family and friends no longer means going out to that hotel, restaurant or the ever popular nyama choma dens. You can achieve the same fun by adding a deck to your house for that extra space for hosting family and friends’ events in your backyard. A deck is an outdoor extension of the indoor living space to the outdoors using wood. The wooden material can be built at the front or backside of your home. The newfound space can be an ideal reception area,

cookouts, refreshment as or even sun-bathing. Spending those hot afternoons at the deck lets you breathe in a fresh cooling breeze whenever you do not want to go out of your residence. Decks give a one-on-one touch with the outside environment, letting your eyes seep in the flowery glitter from your small front-door garden unlike the candid indoor dĂŠcor. Good designing and style of layout adds aesthetics to your home. The brown woody looks lace the general outside appearance,

complimenting flowers and house finishes like paint. However, deciding to have this wooden addition may soak you into frustration if you do not use good wood. SM Models Director Cliff Morisa, says the wood must be resistant to moisture, bugs, moulds, mites, among other destructive organisms. Some of the common hardwood trees for this job include cedar, cypress, redwood and highpressure treated woods like pine. Hard woods may be expensive

MOULDS AND THE PAINT JOB

Mould growths are enemies to a good paintjob and also your health. They deteriorate the surface to look ugly and gory especially the kitchen and bathroom walls, which are in constant touch with moisture. The growths stain good paintjobs with bad strains but

painting walls and wooden surfaces with mould resistant sheds can help arrest the bad looks and peel-offs. Most mould species are obstinate. They cannot be smothered by anti-mould paints if the surface was not well prepared before

application. They remain on the surface even after a paintjob. This calls for proper cleaning and leaving the surface to dry well before painting. A local Mould Advisor, says a good cleanser will not only smoothen these enemies,

but sterilize the wood or wall against future growths by allowing permanent adhesion. Patrick Okumu, a paint professional, says other people may prefers water-based paints because of absence of smell, wash-ability and quick drying unlike oil based.

If this is your preference, the using more than one coatings not optional. More coatings will shield the walls against these surface-eating organisms in addition to maintaining shade and shape standards after washing. Oil-based paints are most

reasons Why garlic is good for you

Garlic is used as an ingredient in many dishes around the world. Though it may not be popular due to its after breath qualities, garlic is immensely beneficial. Workout

You are what you eat even after a sweaty and pumped up workout session. The right post-exercise food choices can make all the difference between getting stronger and getting tired. Follow these simple tips for what to eat after your workout and see the results. Ensure you eat foods rich in protein and carbohydrates which will help your body restore muscle and glycogen lost during the exercise. Carbohydrates are stored in the body as glycogen which is then used up as energy throughout the day. Working out depletes this stock and more is needed for daily activities. Proteins stimulate muscle growth and enhance muscle recovery. Experts recommend eggs, salmon and tuna as good sources of protein and brown rice, whole

meal bread as healthy carbohydrate choices. Go nuts… literally. Always stock your gym bag with assorted nuts which provide a quick protein and carbohydrate fix. Soy nuts are especially good for building muscle. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Water is life and is required to stay

hydrated during and after the workout. As you exercise, your body tends to lose a lot of water and important nutrients like potassium through sweating. A glass of orange juice will work wonders in replenishing potassium and vitamin C levels. Vitamin C helps to repair tissues. It is recommended you drink as much water as you lose during the workout. Get fruity. Pineapples and bananas are some favorable postworkout fruits to indulge. Pineapples have been proven to heal swellings, sprains and bruises thanks to a natural anti-inflammatory substance called bromelain. Bananas are a source of good carbohydrates and potassium required to build damaged muscles. Next time your taste buds tell you to ‘reward’ your efforts with a fatty burger and a bag of chips after your workout, ignore that craving and focus on that dream body you have always wanted. That is the true reward.

AT THE MCSK RED CARPET The 3rd edition of the Musical Copyright Society of Kenya went down on Monday, 20th October and the VIPS showed up in style. Here is who XAccess noticed. 1. Mercy Myra can do no wrong in the orange front slit dress. The dress’ unique design hugged her perfectly showing off her petite figure. But be warned Mercy the shoes did not do justice to that dress and the dress and the stockings were unnecessary. 2. Amani looked stunning in the yellow laced Kitenge dress. But her big hair got in the way, she should have held it up so that the dress’ laced top is emphasized more. Further the blue bra, seemed to sag.

3. Wyre kept it simple and elegant in all black. But did he forget to change his belt? 4. Sanaipei Tande has lost some weight recently, so she looked amazing in the brown black dress but there was nothing special about it, in fact, it was rather matronly and aged her. 5. Suzanna Owiyo was beautiful, but she must have missed the memo and confused the MCSK with blankets and wine. 6. Mbuvi kept it trendy in a bold coloured suit but if you are wearing a suit for a red carpet event, make it completely formal do not go for casual formal unless you are Octopizzo.

Avril on controversial MCSK awards

Has Kris Jenner photo-shopped her pix to look smoother? For a 58 year-old the mother of six always looks great. But in a photo with chef Gordon Ramsay posted by Kris to Instagram on Monday, the Kardashian-Jenner matriarch looked amazing. Six days earlier chef Gordon had posted the same photo with Kris looking all wrinkly. The photo Kris posted was all smoothed out and bright. It’s amazing how many years Photoshop can take off your face!

Elani enjoy star studded treatment on flight back from South Africa Elani are the hottest music group right now. On Sunday they performed at the Big Brother Hotshots eviction party. On their way back from South Africa, the group got the chance to ride in the new KQ Dreamliner. The group took

selfies with the crew and even got the opportunity to meet the captain. They posted the selfies on their social media page saying “We had so much fun on our flight back home. Humbled to be lucky enough to board the new Dreamliner.”

In a post on Instagram, the singing beauty said that regardless of the faults that artistes think MCSK had, it is the only institution that has been able to bring artistes in Kenya together. The post read in part, “MCSK may be or may have been run badly over the years… the PR stunts may be a bit too transparent and sometimes achieve totally opposite results lol… but here’s the thing, what other institution has ever brought artistes together?”

In the same post Avril also urged artistes to support each other and unite to fight for their industry. “Let’s work so hard and so united that we can actually fight for our industry. If we have our own artistes representing us in different places in Africa and the world lets support them because it’s their success that will make the world look at the Kenyan Music scene differently. All this bickering will take us nowhere. “ Ha! Avril!

Govt must show commitment in drugs war The Government must work harder to eliminate rogue police officers linked to drug trafficking using public resources (Police using Govt cars to traffic drugs: Mututho, October 21, 2014). It is unfortunate to learn that security agents are using cars

meant to protect the public to perpetuate crime. Without powerful intervention from top Government organs, Kenya will not win the war against drug. Junior officers cannot engage in ferrying the drugs without orders from their bosses.

A comprehensive probe must be mounted to ascertain whether claims by the Nacada chairman that rogue officials should be arrested in order to save the youth from shackles of drugs. The revelation explains why past interventions have made little

success because of opposition form law enforcers who fight drugs on the lips but perpetuate the vice at heart. The Government cannot claim to be working to improve the lives of the youth while one of its feet is burying the generation in drugs

and alcohol. If things continue in this direction, the Kenya we aspire to have will soon sink in drugs and other banned substances. The President, Inspector General of Police and investigating departments must lead this war.

Ref calls for action against soccer thugs Referee Davies Omweno says stern punishment is urgently required to curb hooliganism in Kenyan football. His remarks follow injuries he and assistant referee Stephen Oduor sustained after a section of AFC Leopards hooligans attacked them in Monday’s Gotv Shield cup tie at City Stadium. Omweno says hooliganism must be condemned at all costs.

“It seems as though we are socialising violence as a way of the Kenyan football. Nobody is safe; fans, footballers, young kids in stadia referees. Something needs to be done soon,” said an angry Omweno. The official and his assistant suffered injuries when the thugs attacked them. Oduor sustained severe injuries in the head after he was hit with objects and blows by the hooligans.

“How do you put it when hooligans beat officials and players before venting fury on opposition players and SuperSport’s buses with stones? Such few individuals should be brought to judgement,” he said. Police fired live bullets into the air to disperse the violent mobs and allow both teams, journalists, broadcast rights holders and the SuperSport crew to escape the chaotic scene.

TAME THE THUGS: Kenya Premier League soccer referee Davies Omweno has called for drastic action against stadium hooliganism following riots that erupted during a KPL tie between AFC Leopards and Sofapaka.

Mcllroy, agent fail to strike fees deal Golfer Rory McIlroy and fhia ormer agent have failed to reach agreement in a legal row over fees. The world’s number one golfer is suing his former agent and two other companies, Gurteen Limited and Canovan Management Services in a multi-million shilling fees dispute. The Commercial Court in Dublin heard efforts to resolve the dispute through mediation was unsuccessful. The mediation failure means the case will go to full hearing next year. The golfer claims a representation agreement he signed almost three years ago is invalid and unenforceable on a number of grounds. He said he signed it when he was just 22,

inexperienced and did not have independent legal advice. The companies deny the claims and are counter-claiming for more than 2 million euro (Sh227 million) they allege is outstanding under the agreement. They are also claiming damages for an alleged breach of the December 2011 agreement and a later agreement in March 2013. Earlier this month, Commercial Court judge Mr Justice Brian McGovern had suggested that both parties try to mediate the dispute. But a statement on Monday from McIlroy confirmed that “the court-directed mediation process failed over the weekend to resolve the issue.”

We can win GOtv Shield – Rangers’ keeper Otieno

WE CAN GET IT: Posta Rangers keeper Ian Otieno. He is confident his side will beat Sofapaka to lift this year’s Gotv Shield title.

Posta Rangers keeper Ian Otieno is buoyant his side will beat Sofapaka to lift this year’s Gotv Shield title. This follows the National Super league side’s advance to the finals after winning in dramatic penalty shootout against West Sugar Kenya in which they won 10-9 at City Stadium on Monday. Otieno was the day’s hero, saving three spot kicks and scoring twice to send his side through to their first ever cup final after the teams had settled for a barren draw in regulation time. “Adrenaline was ripe, it needed a lot of composure to make it to the finals. I am sure our players can handle anything,” said the Keeper.

West Kenya had been the better team especially in the first half but they squandered numerous chances in front of the goal post. Rangers returned stronger in the second half, but they were unable to bring forth goals. The keeper says experienced players like former Kenya international Passcal Ochieng’ and Dennis Mukaisi, Joseph Mbugi, and Joseph Nyaga are helping the team move the right direction. “Sofapaka is a great side who play really well. We shall take that opportunity to showcase our game and hopefully win the shield,” he concluded.

India have suspended all future tours to the Caribbean following the West Indies’ decision to withdraw from their visit to India last week. The Windies left India after Saturday’s fourth one-day match because of a pay dispute between the board and players. India were scheduled to tour the Caribbean in February and March 2016. However, a statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said all tours between the two regions “stand suspended”. The BCCI also confirmed it and said it would take legal action against the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB). India will now play a five-match

one-day international series against Sri Lanka, starting 2nd November. On Saturday, Clive Lloyd, the West Indies chief selector and former captain, has appologized for the national team’s abrupt withdrawal from their tour. “I apologise for the team leaving. Some guys decided to stop this tour and I think it is a mistake,” Lloyd said, adding that he hopes relations between the two crickets boards would not suffer. The West Indies abandoned the tour after the fourth one-day international in Dharamsala on Friday, with one more ODI, a 20 and three Test matches remaining – losing 17 days of cricket.

Despite his own scintillating performances, United already trail Chelsea by 10 points and have won just three of their first eight league matches under new manager, Louis van Gaal. After the Red Devils were rescued by a last-minute Daley Blind equaliser on Monday night, his fellow Dutchman admitted that his start at the helm has been less than impressive. Of United’s points tally so far, Van Gaal told the media: “It’s not too good. When we see the games, normally we are the better team. When you have 12 points out of eight games, in my opinion eight points is too few.”

Kimetto eyes IAAF World Athlete of the Year crown

fingers crossed: World marathon record holder Dennis Kimetto is hoping to bag the biggest individual IAAF Award.

World marathon record holder Dennis Kimetto says he is eyeing the 2014 IAAF World Athlete of the Year Award after making the cut into the final list of three men set to battle it out for the top honours. Kimetto, who set a new mark of 2:02:57 in the Berlin Marathon two weeks ago, will square it out with high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and French pole-vaulter Renaud Lavillenie. “The list was huge, now I have to keep my fingers crossed praying to be the recipient of the biggest individual award,” he said. With little more than a month to go until the Athletics Gala, the finalists

were selected after a two-week-long poll of the world athletics family. The Council of the International Athletics Foundation will select the male and female winners, with the announcement taking place live on stage during the 2014 World Athletics Gala in Monaco on Friday 21 November 2014. No Kenyan woman had made it to the provisional list announced two weeks ago. Ethiopian 3,000m star Genzebe Dibaba will fly the region’s flag after she was short-listed in the final three that include Valerie Adams of New Zealand and Dutchwoman Dafne Schippers.

Russian tennis boss pilloried for calling Williams sisters ‘brothers’ Russian Tennis Federation president Shamil Tarpischev has publicly apologised for the slur against the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus (pictured). The International Tennis Federation came under fire from Martina Navratilova on Monday for failing to act after Tarpischev described the Williams’ as ‘brothers’. The Womens’ Tennis Association reacted swiftly to Tarpischev’s remarks by banning him for a year and imposed a Sh2.23million fine. But Navratilova insisted ITF’s

silence was ‘deafening’. The 59-time Grand Slam champion said: “This kind of bullying comment cannot be tolerated from anyone, but particularly from a high-up official in the tennis world.” But ITF president Francesco Ricci Bitti says such comments will not be tolerated. Ricci Bitti believes Tarpischev’s apology and the WTA’s actions are sufficient punishment. Bitti said: “The ITF was disappointed when it learned that Shamil Tarpischev, longtime President of Russian Tennis

Federation, made derogatory remarks on the gender of Serena and Venus Williams. “What Mr Tarpischev said was wholly unacceptable to the ITF and, when we learned of the issue, we encouraged him to apologise immediately. Tarpischev has taken an important step by sending apology to ITF, WTA and the Williams sisters. “Although Tarpischev assured us his comment was meant as a joke, we made it clear to him what he said is inappropriate in any context.”

QPR midfielder fires back at Redknapp over weight rant After Harry Redknapp’s scathing rant about Adel Taarabt being ‘three stone overweight’, the QPR midfielder hit back by saying the 67-year-old boss “never takes a (training) session.”| “My heaviest at Milan was 86kg, my lightest 84kg — now I’m 85kg,” he said. That’s minor compared with some of the bigger boys. Adebayo Akinfenwa - At 5ft 11in, Akinfenwa - aptly nicknamed ‘The Beast’ - weighs more than 16 stone and can benchpress 180kg, close to double his body weight. Jon Parkin - The Forest Green Rovers striker has scored six goals in 17 games for the Conference outfit, despite piling on pounds. Ronaldo, the former Brazilian footballer,

had an illustrious career with the likes of AC Milan, Real Madrid, Inter and Barcelona, but let himself go in the latter years. Neville Southall - The former Everton keeper was ridiculed for his big size throughout his career that took him to 15 clubs. Jan Molby - The ex-Liverpool defender was taunted by rival supporters for being overweight, not that he let it bother him. He starred in the 1986 FA Cup final win against Everton. Neil Shipperley - The former Crystal Palace frontman was always a big lad but ballooned towards the end of his career before becoming a black cab driver. Adriano - the chunky ex-Inter Milan, Parma and Roma attacker lost his way and started putting on excessive weight.

Liverpool alert as mighty Real Madrid come calling Liverpool will expect noisy fans to recreate the special Anfield atmosphere that has helped them become kings of Europe five times before when they take on Champions League winners Real Madrid on tonight. Brendan Rodgers’s team, third in Group B with three points from two matches, have not yet shown the swagger that swept them to second place in the Premier League last season. They even laboured to a 3-2 win at bottom club Queens Park Rangers on Sunday. But they have won all three

previous games against Real in Europe’s elite competition and Rodgers is confident his players will give the 10-time champions a run for their money in front of a typically raucous home crowd. “Real are playing as well as they have played for the last five to 10 years,” he said. “What’s great for us is that we’re playing at home. We have a great crowd and this is a team that can rise to the level. “Real Madrid are an exceptionally good side but we’ll be ready.” Liverpool’s shortcomings

were all too evident against QPR. And with striker Daniel Sturridge missing with a calf injury and Mario Balotelli short of confidence, breaking down Carlo Ancelotti’s side could be a problem. Real have no such issues upfront. With Cristiano Ronaldo bagging 15 goals in eight La Liga matches, Rodgers is aware of the challenges facing Liverpool. Ancelotti’s men have hit form in La Liga with five straight victories, but will be without forward Gareth Bale, who has a buttock muscle strain.

Blues, Bayern roll as City draw We do not use steroids - KRU Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has called on the government to come out clean after claiming that rugby players are using Illegal food supplements.
