12 Kenyans jet out of Ebola-hit Liberia Kenyans are holding breath that the country will remain free of the deadly Ebola virus as 12 compatriots who have been stranded in Liberia fly home. The Kenyans have in the past two months been stranded in the West African nation which bears the greatest brunt of the Ebola epidemic. The team was stranded following a decision by national carrier Kenya Airways to suspend flights to and from Monrovia. P2

12 Kenyans jet in from Liberia From Page 1 The carrier said the decision was based on a situation risk assessment by the Ministry of Health which called for precautions against possible Ebola spread. Majority of those stranded have been unable to raise Sh190, 000 required for a one-way air ticket to Nairobi. But the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Kenya Red Cross last week said the 12 will be airlifted to Nairobi tomorrow after evacuation
arrangements were finalised. They are expected to leave Liberia on Monday morning aboard a SN Brussels Airlines flight. The flight is one of two commercial airlines still flying the Monrovia route. The group is expected to arrive in Nairobi anytime tomorrow with the efforts expected to cost the Government Sh5 million. But their return has created anxiety over possible spread of the contagious virus. “We are just praying the disease doesn’t find its way here even as our fellow countrymen and women
return,” said Nairobi resident Jackson Mutinda. But Health Cabinet Secretary
James Macharia has allayed the fears, saying a team of qualified doctors are on stand-by to thoroughly screen and monitor the group on arrival. “We shall be ready. We have a team of doctors who will be waiting for them and they will go through thorough screening. Those who do not have any signs or symptoms (and we hope none of them will be having) will be allowed to go home. However, we will monitor them for 21 days in very strict follow up procedures,” he said.
On Friday, President Uhuru Kenyatta declared Kenya free of Ebola and reiterated that the country is capable of controlling the disease in the unfortunate event of a breakout. He said tourists, especially those from Western countries, have been misinformed about the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and assured them that Kenya was safe. “Kenya is safe from Ebola and you should have nothing to fear to come here,” the President said in Kilifi.
Man caught in another’s bed charged with trespass
UNWANTED BEDMATE: Tyler Sullivan has been charged with trespass after invading an unidentified man in his bed in a drunken stupor.
A US man has been charged with trespass after he opened a house and joined another man in bed claiming he thought he was at his mother’s apartment. Tyler Sullivan was arrested by Clinton County police in Michigan, US, after the house owner woke up at 1:35am to find a stranger beside him in bed. He asked Sullivan to leave but he refused, forcing him to call 911 for help. When police arrived, the drunk man was still in bed. He told the officers he had forgotten what had transpired. Sullivan, 26, said he thought he had entered his mother’s apartment, which is in the same complex. The house owner said he heard the front door open and thought it was his wife’s arrival. When he rolled over later, he realised it was in intruder sleeping beside him. Sullivan has been charged with first degree criminal trespass and disorderliness. A US NBC Bay Area news source says the suspect was released on a Sh89,500 surety. Hearing of the case before Middlesex Superior Court in Middletown was set for November 4. He is scheduled to appear in Middlesex Superior Court in Middletown on Nov. 4.
Boko Haram grab another 30 boys, girls Barely a week after the kidnapping of 60 women from two villages in northeastern Nigeria, militant group Boko Haram have abducted another 30 boys and girls from a different village in the region. Heavily armed members of the group invaded Mafa town in Borno state on Friday and seized the children, local leaders said.
“In the past two days, Boko Haram insurgents stormed Mafa and abducted 30 boys aged 13 and above and girls aged 11 and above,” Mafa local government chairman Shettima Maina told CNN. The victims were driven away to a bush believed to be where they will be recruited as foot soldiers. News of the kidnappings was
slow to emerge due to lack of telecom service in s region where most telecom towers have been destroyed in Boko Haram’s fiveyear revolt against the government. Mallam Ashiekh Mustapha, Mafa’s local chief confirmed the abductions, saying the kidnappers also stole 300 cows from the farming community.
The abductions will further dim hopes for an anticipated release of 219 schoolgirls held by the group since April following a controversial ceasefire declared by Nigerian authorities less than a month ago. The daily raids have prompted an exodus of residents of the villages to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno
state, as they escape the insurgents. “Many people have fled with their families to Maiduguri for fear of being killed or losing their children to the insurgents,” Mustapha said. Only on Thursday, the group killed 17 people in a nearby Ndongo village, which they also looted and set ablaze, Maina said.

Fire causes damage at Moi Airbase
Mobile phones improving livelihoods of farmers The use of mobile phones has improved the financial lives of many Kenyans, especially in rural areas where small-scale farmers are making fortunes they never could before. Aside from reducing the cost of communication and improving access to information, mobile phones have also helped rural farmers by way of money transfers. This has been especially useful to the rural poor, who are often under-served by the formal banking system. The study, carried out by Enoch Kikulwe, Elisabeth Fischer and Matin Qaim for research organisation, Plos One, has found that mobile money use has a positive impact on household income. One important pathway
is through money received from relatives and friends, explains the trio. “Such remittances contribute to income directly, but they also help to reduce risk and constraints, thus promoting agricultural profit,” adds the group. They have also discovered that farmers using mobile money tend to save money and spend it on much-needed farm inputs. With their phones, they are able to contact buyers and therefore market a larger proportion of their produce. “These results suggest that mobile money can help to overcome some of the important smallholder market access constraints that obstruct rural development and poverty reduction,” says Kikulwe.
Property of unknown value was destroyed when fire broke out at the Moi Airbase in Nairobi on Sunday evening. Police and military officials said the fire broke out from Armed Forces Canteen Organisation (AFCO). Experts are investigating the incident. Another fire that broke out at a supermarket in Tumaini estate along Eastern bypass this morning was contained in a few minutes. The blaze is said to have broken out from the before spreading. No injuries were reported.
Treasury releases monies to finance county projects The National Treasury has released the second tranche of revenue to counties to fund budgets. In an announcement through the national dailies today signed by National Treasury Principal Secretray Kamau Thuge, a total of Sh49.1billion has been released to regional governments. Nairobi has received the highest allocation of more than Sh2.4b, while Lamu got the lowest at 384.833million. Turkana received about 1.965billion, followed by Kakamega with Sh1.712b. Mandera received the fourth biggest share with Sh1.679b. Nakuru closes the top five with Sh1.586b. The disbursements were done based on a schedule that has been approved by the Senate.
The release of the funds comes against a backdrop of governors claiming they have no funds to run projects and meet recurrent expenditure. Others had resolved to borrow from banks, with Nairobi County Assembly passing a motion last week to allow for the county authority to borrow Sh4billion from banks to pay salaries and fund development expenditures. Counties with the highest poverty index are given due consideration in the allocation. It is on this basis that Turkana and Mandera appeared in the top five. Counties with high population figures such as Kakamega, Nakuru and Kiambu also received high amounts.

Two suspects were killed along Rabai Road in Buru Buru this morning. The suspects were reported to have been mugging pedestrians when police got wind of the incident. Meanwhile, another suspect is fighting for his life in a city hospital after he was shot and seriously wounded after he was found vandalising vehicles at a police station.

The Londonbased group said 481 of the 815 people killed were fighters with ISIS.

Nurses union leaders differ over issued strike notice The split within the one-year old Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) continued to play out yesterday after Chairman Jophinus Musundi led a group in disowning a strike notice issued by Secretary General Seth Panyako. Musundi urged members to disregard the strike notice, which he said was not approved by the Union’s National Governing Council. “We are aware that the Secretary General has announced a strike for nurses, we would like to assure all nurses and the public that we have chosen to have dialogue and an industrial action will be the last resort. In any case the NGC has not approved the strike and what the Secretary General is talking about is his opinion,” said the chairman. He said they will continue holding talks with the government to resolve issues regarding the signing of a Collective Bargaining Agreement and absorption of the ESPs’ nurses and the nurses concern regarding the country’s Ebola

Health led by the Principal Secretary will bear fruits. “We have held two meeting this month alone, and we report that there is progress indeed if the Ministry of Health authorities can fast track this undertaking. The union will continue to engage in ethical conduct and our efforts will be
generated to the service delivery to both the national and county government so to say otherwise we will be totally unfair to the health administration,” he stated. The Kenya Nurse Association, the Progressive Nurses Association and the Nursing Council of Kenya are also taking part in the
negotiations, according to Musundi. Panyako told a news conference Friday that his union had given the government a seven days to address their grievances, failure to which they would go on strike. KNUN wants all nurses on contract be employed permanently.
Civil servant registration extended by one week Some 16,000 civil servants have this week to register themselves with their respective ministries or counties or risk being struck of the public payroll. This is after Devolution Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru extended the on-going biometric listing of civil servants by one week. “This extra time for registration shall take place from Monday 27th October to Friday 31st October 2014. We have indicated that those employees who fail to present themselves for the exercise without justifiable cause will be deemed as ghost workers and subsequently will be removed from the payroll beginning the month of November,” she warned. The listing is targeting about 175 000 civil servants with about 90 percent having registered according to the minister.
116 Nairobi streets Rousseff wins second Brazil presidency to be lit by December The first phase of the Sh10billion street lighting project by Kenya Power in Nairobi will be complete by November 30 this year. Kenya Power Managing Director Ben Chumo said they will be setting up lights in 116 streets in the city at a cost of Sh1 billion. The 116 streets, he said, are areas where Kenya Power has its infrastructure hence the reason it will take a short time to complete compared to the second phase which will take a longer time. “We are working together with City Hall and we had a meeting this week at Governor Evans Kidero office together with the Cabinet Secretary Energy, our staff and myself to discuss the way forward,” Chumo said on Friday during an investor and media briefing. The first phase will give focus to industrial area which according to Chumo
has a lot of commercial activities during the night. They will also light up Kibera, Eastleigh, Embakasi and Buruburu. The street lighting project is a National and Nairobi County government initiative aimed at reducing crime to achieve a 24-hour economy. “Kenya Power is going to be the implementing agency for the project. It has already been designed and we have tendered for the equipment that is going to support the project. The total estimated cost is going to be Sh10bilion,” he explained. The whole project will be officially launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta on December 12 this year in a ceremony expected to usher in the second phase. “Phase two will include streets and roads without Kenya Power infrastructure at the moment and that cost will be close to Sh8billion,” Chumo said.
Brazil president Dilma Rousseff garnered 51.59 percent of votes yesterday to win a hotly contested run-off and secure a second five-year term. She beat opposition candidate, 54 year-old Aecio Neves, who garnered 48.41 percent of the votes in what analysts described as one of the tightest competitions in recent years. In her victory speech, Ms Rousseff said she wanted to be “a much better president than I have been until now”. Before becoming the country’s first female president in 2011, Rousseff, from the Workers’ Party, was chief of staff to former President Lula da Silva. She claims that under the presidencies of her predecessor and herself, masses of Brazilians have risen out of poverty. Rousseff, 66, presided over last summer’s World Cup in Brazil for which she took a lot of political flack over how

public money was spent. Ms Rousseff, who has been in power since 2010, is popular with poor Brazilians thanks to her government’s welfare programmes. The vote however split Latin America’s biggest country almost evenly in two, along lines of social class and geography. Ms Rousseff called on all
Brazilians “to unite in favour of Brazil’s future” and said she would seek political reform. “This president is open to dialogue. This is the top priority of my second mandate,” she told a cheering crowd in the capital, Brasilia. She also thanked her supporters, especially her political mentor and predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula
da Silva. “I thank from the bottom of my heart our number one militant, President Lula.” Her re-election for a second term extends the rule of her Workers Party (PT), which came to power in 2002 with President Lula. Mr Neves admitted defeat in a speech to supporters in Belo Horizonte.
Power firm in Sh1b City lights project for 24-hour economy About 116 streets in Nairobi will be upgraded at a cost of Sh1 billion by the end of November. Kenya Power Managing Director Ben Chumo said the upgrade will take a short period because the areas have basic infrastructure. The first phase will focus on the Industrial Area which has high volumes of commercial activities at
night. Other areas such as Kibera, Eastleigh, Embakasi and Buruburu will also be lit up. The project will be implemented in collaboration with Nairobi City County and targets to wipe out crime and facilitate the 24- hour economy. “We are working with City Hall and had a meeting this week at Governor Evans
Kidero’s office together with Energy Cabinet Secretary to discuss the way forward,” Chumo told an investorcum-media briefing. He said phase two of the project will be launched by President Kenyatta on December 12. It will also involve erecting street lights and CCTV cameras along major highways. “Phase two will include
streets and roads without Kenya Power infrastructure that will cost about Sh8billion.We want to make motor ways safe at night and in the event of any incident, cameras will record data,” he said. Treasury has released about Sh400million to launch the programme.

Amazon suffers another Sh39.1b loss
Leading internet retail company, Amazon, has reported another loss in its third quarter. The firm suffered a $437million (Sh39.1 billion) loss, up from the $41million (Sh3.7billion) reported for the same period last year. In July, the US firm had predicted a rise in third quarter sales between $19.7billion (Sh1.7 trillion) and $21.5bn (Sh1.9trillion), a 15 per cent jump from the second quarter. The loss has been attributed to heavy investment the company has done to build the business. They have invested heavily in new projects with the recent ones being its Amazon Fresh grocery delivery service in the United States of America and its $1billion (Sh89.5 billion) acquisition of video game streaming site, Twitch. This has led to an increase in operating costs that jumped to $21.1billion (Sh1.9 trillion) compared with $17.1bn (Sh1.5trillion) last year.
This has worried investors as many wonder when Amazon will turn significant revenues into profits for shareholders.
Shares have fallen nearly 20 per cent since January. The firm said it expected to report another loss in the next three-month period.
“Kenyans and the Government will either have to pay more for newer drugs to replace inexpensive standards or forgo treatment because it is too costly,” says Dr Samuel Kariuki of the Global Antibiotic Resistance Partnership. On a recent warning from the Ministry of Health, he said drugs are one of the largest health-related burdens for poor families. The study, carried out by Health Action International (HAI), was conducted to establish the full price a patient pays at the nearest pharmacy for ciprofloxacin. The drug is used to treat diarrhoearelated illnesses, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and infections in people living with HIV. In Kenya, the price for a 14-day treatment course ranges between US$ 3 (Sh270) for lowest priced generic brand and US$ 66 (Sh5,870) for the highest. Almost half of Kenya’s population survives on less than a US dollar a day, meaning even the lowest price is considered too expensive for many. HAI Africa has asked the Government to improve treatment costs, increase use of lower-priced generic drugs and provision of free drugs for public sector.

Farmers plan Sh30 m winery MONday, october 27, 2014
A farmers group in Murang’a County is going bananas, and for all the right reasons. Following their success in creating their very own banana wine brand, the group is raising Sh30 million to build a banana wine making plant. The group has come up with Shujaa Power, a brand of wine they made after an overabundance of bananas last year forced them to find new ways of adding value to their excess crop. The farmers, now known as the Kihoti Banana Wine Makers Association, are in talks with a company in Southern Sudan to export the banana wine, which has attracted a strong customer base in its local area.
bizbriefs Uchumi borrows Sh600 million for store upgrades and expansion Uchumi Supermarket customers could see some changes in a number of their favourite stores as the retail chain embarks on a plan to refurbish its facilities. Uchumi has turned to KCB Bank for a Sh600 million loan to fund the expansion and refurbishment of its stores. In its latest annual report, the retailer said it borrowed the funds at an interest rate of 18 per cent and that the loan is repayable in a year. Market analysts at research group African Alliance told X News that this means Uchumi will incur Sh108m in finance costs.
Kenya Power doubles profits as consumers foot the bill Higher electricity tariffs that took effect in December have powered Kenya Power to nearly double its net profit for the period ended 30 June, 2014, the company has revealed. At the end of 2013, the electricity distributor shocked consumers with a price hike of 25 per cent. Kenya Power’s net earnings have since increased by 88 per cent to Sh6.4 billion in the period leading to June 2014 compared to Sh3.4 billion a year earlier.
Since they started making the wine, the group has increased its members’ earnings by 30 per cent when compared to previous earnings from the sale of raw bananas. “At the moment,
we have even been forced to start buying the bananas from our non-members, since the demand for the wine here has grown since we started in 2010,” said Kamengo Kanyi, the group’s chairman.
Local pubs buy the wine in bottles and resell it in smaller quantities, he adds. The 150-member group was formed on the idea that wine making would be the cheapest way to add value and achieve
better sales for their excess crops. The venture is based on the traditional fermentation process, which involves using yeast to speed up the wine-making process. A 330ml bottle of the
wine goes for Sh150 in the local pubs, but is sold at Sh200 to buyers who come from as far as Nairobi and Thika. The wine’s popularity has heightened the group’s focus on production standards.
Local winemakers have been pushing for better and cleaner ways of extracting the juice and fermenting it by the farmers, prompting them to raise funds for a legitimate winery.

MCSK SAGA:
CEo takes on Ringtone
The Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) has been on everybody’s tongue since its annual gala awards ceremony at the C arnivore last week Monday. There was gilts, there was glamour but there was also many side shows. Case in point is the alleged Diamond performance.Rumours were rife that Diamond was supposedly to be paid Sh. 1.5 million to perform at the awards while Kenyan artistes were to receive a measly Sh 50,000.This led to Ringtone racketing at the venue with placards to boot and all in the midst of a celebrated event! Maurice Okoth CEO MCSK clarifies that Diamond was coming into the event to collect his royalties and MCSK convinced him to perform. “Diamond was coming to collect his royalty cheque and by inviting him we wanted to show how well Kenya is doing by being able to pay international artistes too,” said Maurice. “Probably our error was inviting Diamond to receive his royalty cheque on Mashujaa Day,’ added Okoth. He further clarifies that the entire show was live and it was therefore impossible to have a surprise act as alleged. “In a live show you cannot afford to

have a surprise act. Everybody had the script and somebody would have come out to say they rehearsed the song or the broadcaster would have said they had information about a surprise act’. On the issue of Kenyan artiste getting their royalties when their music is played out, Okoth said that they have reciprocal agreements with other societies in other countries. “We do not get money from Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, we only get money from South Africa and the European countries,” he said. Reason being the other countries do not have well established copyright societies. In Africa MCSK is the second best copyright society with South Africa taking the first slot. The society is does not enjoy smooth sailing in its operations. It faces challenges of compliance and have to go door to door collecting for royalty cheques. “Nobody pays their dues until the day we go with police officers and they pay 50 percent more than what they would have paid originally and that has made us unpopular.’’ Awareness is another one of the challenge the society faces. Not many people are aware of the society. MCSK is a non-profit organization that manages the rights of artistes and musicians. “MCSK collectively manages the rights of its members under a specific legal framework that has been set,” said Okoth. The society makes it easier for broadcasters to get clearance to play music by particular artistes.
For an artiste to get paid royalties a process is followed. Information about a particular song is first collected for examplewho wrote the song, the composer of the beat, the arranger and the publisher. The information is then put into a software, WIPOCOS that has been configured with the society’s distribution rules that were set up by the members. Now the society starts looking for information about how music has been used. By using a monitoring software, digital leakage that captures whenever a song is played. “By use of the software we can be able to know how many times a song has been played. Secondly we go to broadcasters and ask them for log sheets of the music they have broadcast,’’ said Okoth. The information is then entered into the system and it shows how many times the song has been played in a particular day. The last step is keying in the amount of money that has been paid by broadcasters and the system allocates money for every time the song was played and distributes the money accordingly. Why then are other artistes crying foul? Maurice admits that it is not easy to deal with musicians and that many a times egos get in the way but they are open to dialogue and to iron out any miscommunication. We know we have to keep our house in order and we are willing to work with everyone, disgruntled or not to make sure this industry grows through leaps and bounds”. So why did Diamond not show up? The verdict is out there.

Miss Machakos is now
Miss World Kenya
Standing at 5’7 feet, Machakos County beauty queen Ida Nguma stole the crowds’ and judges hearts to emerge this year’s Miss World Kenya. Her poetic aptitude must have played a major contribution to her victory as she stood out like a sore thumb from other contestants and left the judges in tears as she recited a piece on the plight of the girl child. An overwhelmed tear streaked Idah could not hide her joy and disbelief after being named Miss World Kenya 2014. “I am very happy to have won. I had tried to enter many pageants and I faced one rejection after another. But I did not give up. God Almighty has rewarded us with the Miss World Kenya 2014 crown,” said an ecstatic Idah. The 22 year old Fourth year student from Kenyatta
University now joins the millionaire club in Kenya as her victory secured her a brand new car, a million shillings to her name and the chance to represent Kenya in the Miss World Finals to be held in London later next month. Hot on her heels were Miss Kirinyaga, Wangechi Muchiri and Miss Bungoma, Lucy Amtallah who emerged first and second runners up respectively. It was a bitter sweet moment after the bickering that had taken center stage last two weeks on who exactly deserved to use the Miss Kenya title. The event was classy to say the least with organizers pulling all stops to stamp their authority as the official Miss Kenya pageant.

How could Kenya be bundled out after only 21 days? We all know the drill. Of course the previous year, rapper Prezzo almost clinched the deal but just how have we been bundled out after only three weeks? Kenya bid BBA Hotshots farewell as Melvin Alusa got evicted yesterday, a week after Sabina Stadler’s exit.
Voting polls show that Kenya did their best to save its representatives but that wasn’t enough. The housemates who survived eviction not only received support from their countries but also enjoyed a great following from other countries. Alusa was stunned by his exit. “Honestly, I don’t know, I am still in a dream,” he told IK at the live eviction show. He had exuded confidence prior to the eviction show and even
told Biggie he had not seen the last of him yet. His 21 day stay in the house was marked with drama and entertainment. His lively personality and performing talent intimidated his fellow Hotshots who in turn nominated him to get rid of strong competition, perhaps? As we welcome Alusa home, is it not time Kenya found out exactly why after nine seasons we are yet to ferry the USD 300,000 home?

Five years ago Claire Eboi and Jesse Ng’ang’a met. From the onset Jesse knew that Claire was the woman he would marry on Saturday 18th October 2014 at the quaint PCEA Muteero Church in Karen. And when that day came, they said I do in front of friends and family. Flash back to August 2013 when Jesse got down on one knee and popped the question. “I had had an operation and I had an eye patch on. I could not leave the house and when he proposed it meant the world,” said Claire. “I proposed to her a day before our anniversary because if I did it on our anniversary it would have been predictable and I really wanted to surprise her,” said Jesse. The church was tastefully decorated with white flowers hanging from the pews in a funnel. A white carpet was laid out on the aisle and pink and white rose petals were strewn across it. The altar was decorated with purple and pink fabric and fairy lights. As Claire walked down the aisle hanging on her parent’s arms, Jesses was beside himself with joy. Claire had on a white flowing chiffon dress with a long train. The dress had crystals just below the bust and had buttons cascading down the back. Claire accessorized her simple dress with a veil which had miniature flower details on it. The bride had on fuchsia shoes that were in step with her colour scheme. Her hair was held up into a bun with a side fringe and she looked like a princess. Jesse on the other hand wore a tailored grey suit with a black shirt and grey shoes. He confided in us that his bride did not help in choosing his outfit. “She did not see my outfit till she saw me at the church. She just gave me a colour scheme and I went shopping,’’ said a beaming Jesse. The maids were pretty in pink lace and tulle dresses while the men dazzled in black suits with white shirts. The flower girls looked adorable in their all-white puff dresses. After the official ceremony, everyone in attendance headed to the Jockey Club, Ngong Racecourse. The grounds had a huge marquee that was decorated with white and pink paper lanterns. The tables had black linen and the chairs were white. One would be forgiven to think they had entered Neverland. After all the singing and dancing it was time for cake! The cake had two tiers and other two stand alone cakes on the side. The elegant cake was all white with pearls and a black ribbon. It had a unique topper figure of a groom carrying his bride. The couple had a budget of 1.5 million and had been planning their wedding since last year. “The planning process has been overwhelming and crazy but we made it through,’’ said Claire. On honeymoon plans, the couple were heading to Mombasa then to Dubai. X News wishes the couple all things nice!

HOROSCOPES capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19
Your imagination is working overtime today, Capricorn, and you might spend hours at a computer writing or in front of an easel or piano creating your own brand of painting or music. This drive to create comes from the heart and shouldn’t be ignored no matter what other issues come up.
aquarius Jan 20 - Feb
A conflict between your responsibilities to family and obligations to friends could rear its ugly head today, Aquarius. You might want to attend an event but need to deal with emotional issues in the home immediately. It could be difficult to keep a cool head under these circumstances.

Money might be the issue. Be aware that your fears may run away with you. The situation may be more secure than it appears. You might want to attend a class or lecture, perhaps on computer science or some other technology. As with the vacation plans, try to view this objectively.
taurus Apr 20 - May 20
Today you might feel too overwrought to concentrate on whatever goals you’re trying to reach, particularly if they’re financial. Past issues might crop up at inopportune times but will still need to be released. If you aren’t careful, this could get in the way of just about anything you need to do.
gemini May 21 - Jun 21

libra Sep 23 - Oct 22

All PSVs must adhere to the cashless system deadline
Kenyans must change the last minute rush and eventual pleas for extension of deadlines through court injunctions and protests. Do not be caught on the wrong side of regulations once deadlines lapse. The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has said all Public Service Vehicles must have
adopted the cashless payment by December 1 (NTSA warns on cashless deadline October 24, 2014). Last minute rushes are not the best. Many things go wrong when implementation starts, paving way for corrupt dealings. Kenyans must demand for the
cards from PSV operators. The Ministry of Transport must also iron out queries of the efficacy of the cards especially the numbers used by various transport Sacco’s for smooth transition. But again, NTSA must ensure the system is rolled out to effectively tame madness in the transport
sector which has for long been hinged on corruption. Fixing tamper-proof speed governors sent wrong signals when it was implemented but no follow-up was made to ensure they remained intact. This exposed passengers to possible accidents. The system seemed to be a
personal project of tendering items and using the Government to accessing ready market to benefit few individuals. The changes must be monitored to ensure they are not obsolete after deadlines. Licenses of those who do not comply must be withdrawn henceforth.

Paralympics body elects new officials The International Paralympics Committee (IPC) has hailed Kenya for re-organising her office ahead of the Rio 2016 Games qualifications next year. Kenya, who faced imminent ban by the international body, conducted an election at the Kenyan National Sports Council (KNSC) boardroom on Saturday. “IPC is happy with this positive move to bring all Kenyan Paralympics stakeholders on board. We are encouraging other member countries to emulate Kenya as an example in solving their disputes,” said IPC board member Jairus Mogalo who oversaw the elections. Mogalo said IPC is ready to work with Kenya and help the country form a strong KNPC office ahead of the 2016 Rio Games. “IPC board members will visit Kenya in coming weeks not only to train officials but to unveil them opportunities for growth and expansion,” said Mogalo. The Saturday elections saw former KNPC
treasurer Agnes Oluoch floor former chairman Douglas Sidialo and Stanley Mutuma to emerge the new federation chairperson. “It’s a great dawn for us. My administration will be an all-inclusive. The next step is to spread the spirit of Paralympics to the grassroots in all counties,” said the mother of two who represented the country in shotput in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Pune, India. Oluoch had 23 votes against Mutuma’s one, while Sidialo had none. The Mutuma-led faction had sued the federation to court following elections held in March, 2014 that voted Oluoch as chairperson. KNSC treasurer Charles Nyaberi was assisted by KNSC deputy secretary James Akama as returning officer. John Tita floore Grace Wahura by 23 votes to win one for the treasurer’s post. “All athletes should work hard to make Rio qualifications on merit. There will be no short cuts.”

Sofapaka delayed Gor’s title party on Saturday when they put on a gallant performance, beating table toppers Gor Mahia 3-2. The result left Coach Sam Timbe confident that his side can still run away with the Kenyan Premier League title. Batoto Ba Mungu came from a Eugene Asike own goal, to eventually dominate the champions at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, a match that was marred by crowd unrest later on. Sofapaka’s victory ensured the 2014 title race remained wide open with two rounds of matches remaining. A win for Gor would have mathematically confirmed them the 2014 champions but instead the result means confirmation of the league winner may have to wait until the final day of action with secondplaced Sofapaka and third-placed Tusker all in with the chance of taking the title. Burundian international Abdoul Fiston Razak, calmly chested a deep punt from John Njoroge to beat Gor goalkeeper Jerim Onyango with equal aplomb. Razak returned sharper in the second half to rise above a lethargic Gor defence and head home Enoch Agwanda’s long throw-in in the 53rd minute for his and the club’s second. Anthony Ndolo got on the end of an Agwanda cross to beat the despairing dive of Onyango. The busy Dan Sserunkuma’s flying header hit the woodwork but compatriot Geoffrey Kizito was on hand to rifle the rebound home for Gor’s second on 83 minutes. “I said we are going to fight until the end, nobody knows how the remaining two matches will be, our aim is to win them all and hope our opponents slip up,” said Timbe. Elsewhere Leopards overcome closed door ban to pip Chemelil Sugar in Kisumu while KCB keep alive their hopes of survival with draw away to Bandari in Sunday’s matches. Mathare United and visiting Sony Sugar cancelled each other out in a thrilling encounter at Kenyatta Stadium.

Limo defends Simeone happy Osaka title with progress
IT’S STILL MINE: Jackson Limo crosses the finish line first in the Osaka Marathon yesterday.
Kenya’s Jackson Limo became the first man to shield Osaka Marathon honours in yesterday race in Japan. Limo, 26, who won gold in a time of 2:12:06 lowered his time to 2:11:43 for course record victory. First edition winner Elijah Sang (Kenya) and Ser-Od Bat-Ochir of Mongolia, previous course record holder took second and third positions respectively in 2:12:54 and 2:13:03. Limo, a former student of Kitany Secondary School, says he had been training well and was confident of positive results. “My target was to improve and defend the title,” said Limo. “I am happy to have achieved that. It’s also a new course record something
that I should be proud of,” he continued who has also won Lewa Marathon and Discovery Race before. “You have to aim higher… 2:09:06 in Paris in April this year highlights my progress. I want to do sub 8 before the end of the year,” said Limo. The winner says his understating of his opposition was key in helping him emerge victorious. “I know Sang better because we are training partners back in Eldoret. Being a previous winner meant he knew the course well. My final kicks was great,” he said. Limo who is expected back in the country on Tuesday says he will take rest before deciding which race he will take part in.
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has once again defended his side’s style of play, saying set pieces are a normal part of football. The Colchoneros emerged victorious against Getafe on Saturday with Mario Mandzukic’s goal, which came in the aftermath of a corner, ultimately the only thing to separate the two teams. The result was the capital club’s third victory in the space of a week, after a 2-0 win against Espanyol in La Liga and a 5-0 midweek thrashing of Malmo in the Champions League. Set-pieces are a part of football,” Simeone said. “It’s normal to have those options. After playing three games in a week it is not easy to have eight goals for and none against.
The 44-year-old also talked about his side’s performance against their local rivals, arguing that their opponents had actually improved after having captain Alexis sent off for striking Mandzukic. “In the first half we had a good, controlled game,” the former Argentina international continued. “[It stayed that way] until the sending off, but in the last 30 minutes Getafe’s courage led them to play a good game. “We dropped back and suffered [because of it]. “We live day by day and it was a very important that we had a result in the context of the week. “Winning all three games in the week gave it the result extra value.”

Kiptoo engineers Kenyan top three Frankfurt marathon glory Mark Kiptoo led a Kenyan sweep of the top three places at the 33rd Frankfurt Marathon on Sunday. The 2013 runners-up finished in two hours, 6 minutes, 49 seconds, 10 seconds ahead of Mike
Kigen. Gilbert Yegon came in nine seconds later for third spot. Ethiopia’s Tebalu Zawude and Deribe Robi were fourth and fifth respectively. It was the 13th consecutive
win for a Kenyan in the race. Kiptoo was well off course record of 2:03:42 set by compatriot Wilson Kipsang in 2011. Defending champion Vincent Kipruto finished 13th in 2:12:09. Aberu Kebede of Ethiopia
won the women’s race in 2:22:21, ahead of Kenya’s Sharon Cherop in 2:23:44 and Ethiopia’s Ashetu Bekere in 2:24:59. More than 15,000 runners from 101 countries raced for honours.

Bankers stamp authority with Impala Floodlit win Kenya Commercial Bank continued dominance in the local circuit after beating Kenya Harlequin 30-3 in the Impala Floodlit finals at Impala Club. Coach Curtis Olago praised his side after successfully defending the title, and winning the fourth Floodies trophy. “It’s a hard task defending the title but that is good work from the boys. We used young players for the three weeks as we brace for the Kenya Cup Challenge,” Olago said. “It’s all about character. As a coach, I have to make sure all the 23 players are ready to lift the team when required,” Olago said. Quins conceded loss as head coach Enos Otieno admitted KCB were the superior side. But he was unhappy with the manner in which his team easily conceded possession in the second half.
“We allowed KCB to do anything they wanted in the scrums. We also lacked leadership in the forwards when our scrum half was out early in the second half,” he said. In the opening five minutes, Quins squandered two early penalties through Kevin Keegan and Isaac Adimo. KCB had their chance in the 10th minute but kicked over a penalty through Esau Otieno to lead 3-0. Another penalty by Otieno at half time mark gave the bankers a 6-0 cushion. Jacob Ojee and Collins Wanjala came off the bench to score a try each. The numerical advantage opened gaps in the KCB ranks. Right winger Allan Omuka scored a spectacular try in the 63rd after surviving late tackles from Agunda and Tony Mutai.

Juve three points clear after Palermo hammer Defending champions Juventus maintained their unbeaten Serie A start with victory over lowly Palermo. Midfielder Arturo Vidal gave Juve the lead when he fired across Palermo keeper
Stefano Sorrentino after he was slipped through by Carlos Tevez. Vidal and Claudio Marchisio wasted chances to double the lead. The game was sealed when
“I am grateful to have won this time, although my form was better last year. The victory gives me motivation. I think I have the capacity to run a 2:04 marathon in future,” said Kiptoo, 38.
Fernando Llorente headed his first goal of the season from Andrea Pirlo’s corner. It was almost 3-0 in injurytime when Sebastian Giovinco’s effort from outside the box came back
off the post. Juventus’s victory saw them move three points clear of secondplaced Roma, who drew 0-0 at Sampdoria on Saturday. Napoli won 6-2 over Verona. After Emil
Hallfredsson put Verona up 1-0 in the first minute of play, it was all Napoli as Gonzalo Higuain bagged a second half hat-trick in a rout at Stadio San Paolo.
Kenyan boxer Rayton Okwiri knocked out Australia’s Marcos Nader in a preliminary welterweight clash for the International Boxing Association (AIBA) title on Friday in Azerbaijan. Okwiri’s victory put him on course in the chase for Rio Olympics ticket. Okwiri was considered an outsider in his weight category in comparison with his opponent, an EBU European Union belt holder. Nader, 24, the only Austrian boxer in APB ranks, will be looking forward to getting back on track on his way to APB glory. Okwiri will next face Turkey’s Onur Sipal as he seeks his Rio 2016 ticket. Sipal won the six-round contest against Lithuania’s Eimantas Stanionis he largely dominated before picking the victory in a unanimous decision. Okwiri and Benson Gicharu, a bronze medallist from Scotland, are the only two Kenyans who were picked by AIBA to compete in the topclass pro-boxing competition.

Louis van Gaal claimed Manchester United’s fighting spirit will take them back into the top four after Robin van Persie’s last minute equaliser against Chelsea. But the United boss criticised his striker’s ‘stupid’ reaction in ripping off his shirt after scoring the goal, earning him a booking. United were seconds away from their third defeat this season when Van Persie smashed the ball home beyond 10-man Chelsea’s defence, the first goal of the Van Gaal era in what used to be known as ‘Fergie time’. Didier Drogba had put Chelsea ahead after 53 minutes, but Jose Mourinho was furious when Branislav Ivanovic was sent off by referee Phil Dowd in injury time for a second yellow-card offence. “Chelsea tried to kill the game, they made the pitch big and we had to run a lot but we fought till the end,” Van Gaal said. ‘When we scored it was deserved. We created a lot of chances - far more than Chelsea Chelsea created one chance in the first half, but it was a lack of communication that led to
their goal. After they scored we lost our heads, but we played very, very well.’ Van Gaal admitted he was furious with Van Persie for ripping his shirt off after scoring. “It was a stupid reaction after the goal,” he said. ‘I can see he was excited but after he was booked it was not so smart.’ Mourinho was angry with Dowd after he booked six Chelsea players and sent off Ivanovic for bringing down Angel di Maria. Chelsea will now be fined a mandatory Sh3.65 million for picking up five bookings and Ivanovic will miss Saturday’s home league clash with QPR. “When five “flash” interviews ask me about the sending-off it is obvious why. I cannot speak about the decisions, even though it was a mistake, because you know what happens when I speak,” said Mourihno. “I speak about the game and it was a good game, but it was a good Manchester United. In Van Gaal they have one of the best managers in the world and they are in great hands,” he added.
Cricket NZ steps up to eliminate graft Cricket New Zealand says it will increase security around domestic Twenty20 matches in a bid to tackle corruption. Head of cricket operations Lindsay Crocker said extra security would be provided around player areas at T20s to control public access. Crocker said players will be concealed behind a protected area. They won’t be able to take
their phones in and anybody going into that area will need to be accredited, and again they will need to leave their phones. Crocker said similar measures had been applied to international games for some time and might be extended to other domestic competitions. likely to do so around televised matches,” he said.
