Zambian President dies in UK WEDNESday, OCTOber 29, 2014
From Page 1
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing on of our beloved president,” cabinet secretary Roland Msiska said in a statement read out on national TV. He said that Sata’s wife and son were at his bedside by the time he died. “I urge all of you to remain calm, united and peaceful during this very difficult period,” Msiska said. The 77 year-old leader was
receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness. Family sources were quoted saying Sata died after “a sudden onset of heightened heart rate”. News of his death comes just days after Zambia celebrated the 50th anniversary of her independence from Britain. It is not immediately clear who will succeed the president but the issue may be decided by the Zambian cabinet which was scheduled to meet today morning.
Concern over Sata’s health has been mounting in the country since June, when he disappeared from the public eye without explanation. It was then reported that he was getting medical treatment in Israel. He has rarely been seen in public since returning from the UN General Assembly last month, where he failed to make a scheduled speech amid reports he had gone ill from his New York Hotel.
Just days before he left for New York, Sata had attended the opening of parliament in Lusaka where he jokingly said: “I am not dead.” Earlier this month, media reports in Zambia said Sata had gone abroad for a medical check-up amid persistent speculation that he was seriously ill. After he left the country, Defence Minister Edgar Lungu was named as acting president. Vice-President Guy Scott has
regularly stood in for Sata at official events. But he is of Scottish descent and his parents were not born in Zambia. That means he may fall foul of a constitutional clause on parentage which would nullify his candidacy. Known as “King Cobra” for his venomous tongue, Sata was elected Zambia’s president in 2011 after defeating the then incumbent Rupiah Banda whose party had been in power for 20 years.
Single ladies can tie knot without groom Single women longing for the thrill of wedding without a groom have a chance to do so after a Japanese travel company launched ‘Solo Weddings’ service. Cera Travel of Kyoto are offering unique solutions to women seeking the romance of a marriage ceremony without actually tying the knot. The company offers a two-day trip and a sleep-over in a fancy hotel on the D-day. Brides get complete wedding dress fittings, bouquets of choice, hair make up and a choice man for photo shoot. “All details are taken care of by wedding professionals and for those who don’t want a traditional white wedding dress, we offer our Geisha service, which sees the brides going on an historical photo shoot dressed up as Geishas,” a spokesman from the company said. The company says it is a unique experience catering for those who want to pursue careers, and not follow local wedding arrangements. Ten women have already enjoyed the experience and one of them, who spoke to International Business Times, said it was amazing. “I’ve been in a relationship for years but we’ve never got round to actually getting married. So I decided to do this for myself and it was amazing fun. I always wanted to wear a wedding dress and to be pampered like this and now I have been. It was great,” said 43-year-old Nagi Daisen.
US says West Africa response to Ebola improving
The US has praised Ebola-hit West African nations and foreign donors for efforts in tackling the outbreak. US envoy Samantha Power, who is on a visit to the region, said Liberia and Sierra Leone had hugely increased the number of safe burials - one of the main ways the virus is transmitted. Power said international aid was helping to combat the disease, and urged donors to continue to help. The disease has killed about 5,000 people in the region. The US government has continued to stress that the best way to stop the virus from spreading is to tackle it at source,
and has rejected calls for restrictions on travel from the region. But Australia has approved a visa ban on the main affected countries, and its government has not sent medical staff to West Africa. At a joint news conference in Monrovia with Ms Power, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said “restriction is not the appropriate response” to a “global crisis”. She warned against stigmatising Ebola virus carriers. Almost all of victims of the latest outbreak - the worst ever - have been in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Power said the US government message
to Liberians was that the virus would be beaten. As well as the rise in safe burials, she said mobile laboratories had helped to massively cut the time taken to test samples, enabling more beds to be freed up. Earlier, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim said at least 5,000 medics and support staff were needed to beat the disease. Many potential recruits were too scared to travel to West Africa, he said while on a visit to Ethiopia. “Right now, I’m very much worried about where we will find those healthcare workers,” he said.

Kenyans sue Britain again over Mau Mau
Women still earning less than men for the same job: Survey There’s no country in the entire world where a woman earns as much as a man for doing the same job. A new report by the World Economic Forum (WEF) says that it is going to take another 81 years for the gender wage gap to close as women continue to earn less than their male colleagues in what the human rights community calls an injustice and an outrage. However, the gap in salaries between men and women is slowly growing smaller though it should have closed by now. While some industries have been known to give equal pay for equal work, others have failed their female workers completely. In their latest report, WEF researchers say that some 3rd world
countries may be doing a better job than their first world counterparts when it comes to income equality. Women in the United States, for instance, “earn about two-thirds (66 per cent) of what men earn for similar work,” says WEF economist, Saadia Zahidi. Zahidi notes that African countries like Burundi lead the equality ranking. In Kenya, some numbers indicate that women could be earning just as much as men though previous research suggests some women only take home 77 per cent of what their male colleagues make in a month. While Kenya’s numbers are open for debate, Burundi is the top country in women’s pay. Women there earn 83 per cent of what men in the same jobs make.
Another 40, 000 Kenyans have sued the British government second compensation for rights abuses committed during the Mau Mau insurgency. The lawsuit filed at the High Court in London yesterday against the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office comes barely a year after the UK paid Sh2.1 billion to as compensation to some 5, 228 Kenyans who suffered torture and abuse during the uprising caused by the colonial administration.
Man wants MPs to slash number of counties to 12
ORDER MEMBERS..! National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi delivered a petition by a man calling for the slashing of the number of counties from 47 to 12.
A man has presented an official petition to Parliament calling for the slashing of the number of counties from 47 to 12. Eric Babare Orina also proposes that the twothirds gender rule for public appointments be scrapped and the number of parliamentary seats set aside for women reviewed. In the petition that National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi delivered to MPs on Wednesday, Orina wants the 47 County seats reserved for women in Parliament reduced to 12. He proposes that the other 35 be dished out to special groups representing special interests. Such groups includes the business community, professional organisations, academia, trade unions, persons with disabilities, youth and NGOs. He suggests that all the groups be given five seats each. He also wants seven electoral seats reserved for Kenyans living abroad and amendments to provide that Supreme Court judges be appointed on temporary basis. In the Executive, Orina wants Cabinet Secretaries picked from among MPs, saying the current ministers have failed to meet parliamentary expectations. He also wants the 12 counties be formed
along the eight former provinces, with the larger Rift Valley split into four regions. He says Nyanza should be divided into two and Nairobi expanded to include Machakos, Murang’a, Kiambu and Kajiado. Coast should include Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Taita Taveta and Lamu as Tana River is joined by Garissa, Kitui and Makueni in forming a new county to be called South Eastern. He says Kisumu, Siaya and Vihiga should form North Nyanza as Migori, Kisii, Nyamira and Homabay are grouped in South Nyanza. He says Kakamega, Bungoma, Trans-Nzoia and Busia counties should form Western. Others are Central Rift to include Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo. West Rift Bomet, Kericho and Nandi and South Rift Laikipia, Nyandarua, Nakuru and Narok. Samburu, Turkana, Marsabit and West Pokot will be in North Rift. Isiolo, Wajir and Mandera should form North Eastern as Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga and Nyandarua form Mt Kenya region. The petition has been forward to the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee which will summon Orina to explain his rationale before a report is forwarded to the House in 60 days.

Security boost for US state facilities The US has announced bolstered security measures at government buildings in the wake of an attack on Canadian parliament. The move has been described as a precautionary measure to safeguard government staff and facilities.
Baringo speaker arrested over clashes in the county
Baringo County Assembly Speaker Kassait Kamket has been arrested in ongoing investigations into recent clashes in the region. Kassait was detained at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday night as he waited to travel to Istanbul, Turkey. Kassait confirmed his arrest through Facebook. “This is to let all friends, comrades, compatriots and
gallant sons and daughters of Tiaty and Baringo County that the forces of evil have conspired to successfully have me arrested tonight at Jomo Kenyatta Airport. I am now detained here. God knows what next. I urge all the people of goodwill to join me in prayer so as to defeat this evil conspiracy. Together we shall emerge out of this stronger than ever before. God bless,” he said.
The arrest came as the county leaders were due to apply for anticipatory bail at the High Court in Eldoret after they were linked to the attacks by Police Inspector General David Kimaiyo. Kimaiyo has called for the leaders’ arrest for questioning over the attacks at Kapedo where police officers were killed last week. A massive operation has seen police recover guns stolen
from three officers attacked to the GSU elite squad who were killed on October 20. Two civilians were also gunned down in the raid. The officers were stripped of uniforms and the firearms taken away. President Uhuru Kenyatta has since warned that no one will be spared if found culpable. “As the Government moves to deal with the criminals, leaders and residents must
also play their part in ensuring security,” he said. “We must always remember that security is a shared responsibility, and that each and every Kenyan must remain their brothers and sisters keeper.” President Kenyatta said: “Attacks on the State and the security forces of the Republic of Kenya are a threat to our stability and undermine the epitome
of authority in all civilised society, the world over.” He warned that such attacks are “inconceivable, unacceptable and will not be tolerated at any cost, by my administration.” “We will not accept any pretext, including the excuse of cattle rustling, to harm our forces, people or destroy property anywhere in this country.” More on www.capitalfm.co.ke

PSVs want e-ticketing launch postponed to January 2015 Matatu Welfare Association (MWA) now wants the implementation of the cashless payment system scheduled for December 1st put on hold until next year. Speaking during a press briefing at a Nairobi hotel on Tuesday, MWA Chairman Dickson Mbugua said the Government should instead concentrate on ensuring road safety during the coming festive season when many people are expected to be travelling. “Road safety on our roads is paramount particularly during the festive season which is a few weeks ahead of us. Our efforts and energies should be focused on the road safety for our citizens first. Cashless can wait and be tackled later after thorough pilot schemes,” he said. Mbugua said the digital system of payment is faced with numerous technological challenges that should be tackled first to ensure safety

County Secretary sent to civil jail for defying court order Nairobi County Secretary Lillian Ndegwa has been committed to civil jail for three months for defying a court order. High Court Judge Justice George Odunga ordered Central OCPD and OCS to arrest Ms. Ndegwa and present her to court for a formal committal. The court had issued a summon to Ms. Ndegwa to personally appear before it today to explain how the
county government was planning to settle an outstanding debt of Sh31 million owed to an insurance company but she failed to show up. The judge criticized her conduct saying, “such impunity cannot be tolerated in a civilised and just society”. Invesco insurance is laying the claim through Wachira Nderitu law firm and the debt has been outstanding since 2004.

Nine out of 12 Kenyans arrive from Liberia Only nine out of the 12 Kenyans who were expected from Ebola ravaged Liberia arrived last night at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. They were as planned, not allowed to leave the airport or contact their families within the first 12 hours of arrival. Their blood samples will be collected and analysed at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). They were observed for signs of the haemorrhagic fever, and asked to provide their permanent residential addresses and telephone contacts in Kenya so as to allow monitoring for the next three weeks. They were still being held at the Port Clinic within the airport by the time of going to press. Those who will show signs of Ebola will be taken to Kenyatta National Hospital. Officials say they will be put on a safety procedure involving monitoring for 21 days to ensure none is carrying the killer virus.
WB to fund Kenya volunteers fighting Ebola World Bank President Jim Yong Kim has said that the global lender will finance Kenyan volunteers going to West Africa to help combat Ebola. While speaking during a briefing on Kenya’s preparedness for Ebola at the Kenyatta National Hospital, he pointed out that Kenya has made a lot of progress in terms of health service delivery and is a shining example in the region. Dr. Kim also criticized governments which closed their borders instead of
giving the required support to contain the outbreak saying Ebola is not an African problem but a global challenge. He challenged other nations to follow the Kenyan example in building strong health systems which will help in tackling the problem. He said devolution of health services was a bold step in taking services closer to citizens. “I have been hearing bits and pieces of what is going on in Kenya. You have embarked on extremely bold measures in devolving health
services,” said Dr. Kim. The World Bank President had accompanied First Lady Margaret Kenyatta on a tour of the Integrated Gender Based Violence Recovery Centre at Kenyatta National Hospital. The First Lady commended the World Bank for availing resources to tackle gender based violence, female genital mutilation and maternal and child mortality. She said the World Bank’s support demonstrates the importance it attaches to improving the wellbeing of women in the modern
society. On his part, the World Bank President applauded the First Lady for her initiatives to reduce maternal and child mortality, saying her focus on issues facing women is extremely important. He added that the First Lady’s efforts in fighting retrogressive cultures against women are also commendable. “I would really want to continue working together with you to stop some of these retrogressive cultures,” he said.

Former German bank chief fined Sh11m for bribe A former boss for German-based BayernLB bank has been found guilty of bribery and has been forced to pay a fine of €100,000 (Sh11.4 million). Werner Schmidt, who was also given an 18 month suspended sentence a court in Munich, had bribed Austrian politician, Joerg Haider in 2007. A suspended sentence is a prison sentence that does not take place immediately. Instead, it allows a judge to decide that the offence is serious enough for a jail term. Schmidt, who stepped down in 2008, has admitted bribing Haider, a state governor who died in the same year during negotiations to buy a lender known as the Hypo Alpe Adria
banking group. Prosecutors had argued that Schmidt and seven former board colleagues were guilty of embezzling money by overpaying for the Hypo. Schmidt’s bribe involved a €2.5 million (Sh283 million) football sponsorship deal. The money was sent through one of BayernLB bank’s subsidiaries, Deutsche Kreditbank (DKB), the Austrian media reported. At the time, Haider, who died in 2008, was governor of Austria’s Carinthia. Schmidt pleaded guilty to the bribery charge while his seven colleagues were cleared of all charges following a settlement agreement.

LOSS VENTURE: A farmer harvests cane in Western Kenya. The Government has asked sugar distributors and buyers not to punish consumers following the closure of two milling factories.
Don’t hike sugar prices, Koskei tells distributors Ministry of Agriculture officials have asked sugar distributors not to punish consumers following the closure of two milling factories. The closure is likely to spark a price hike. Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei says the ministry plans to import 21,000 metric tonnes to stabilise prices as it awaits an inevitable shortage. The move will cushion consumers from price hikes by ensuring distributors have enough stocks to meet public demand. On October 19, 2014, Mumias, the largest sugar
producer, closed its milling plant for eight weeks for maintenance, Marketing Director Margaret Makhungu said. The West Kenya Sugar factory has also closed down for maintenance. Mumias can crush up to 8,000 metric tons of sugar daily but the plant has been running at 70 per cent capacity before the shutdown, Makhungu said. He urged distributors not to hike prices and assured them that the shortage was temporary. “There is no need to punish consumers by raising the prize of sugar,” he said.

Kenyan digital startup joins war against Ebola WEDNESday, OCTOber 29, 2014
A Kenyan startup that collects data from mobile phones, Echo Mobile, has broken regional boundaries and is working with Airtel and IBM Africa research lab to help West African Governments curb the deadly Ebola Virus. The partnership has developed a system that analyses citizen reports sent via SMS or voice calls as well as a toll-free number set up by Airtel through which citizens can send the messages. The information is then sent to a central government coordination unit to deploy medical teams and assist those affected. Echo Mobile Product Director, Jeremy Gordon said fact that SMS and Voice data are location specific has brought to light particular regions with growing numbers of suspected Ebola cases. This is crucial in ensuring such areas receive supplies quicker as well as faster response by relevant authorities for body collection and burials. “We’re working to make sure that the stream of messages
from patients, health workers and the general public can be used to augment the response effort and provide a direct and near real-time view of the situation on the ground,” said Jeremy Gordon, Product Director, Echo Mobile. Airtel Managing Director, Sierra Leone, Sudipto Chowdhury, said mobile technology is an important communication platform that will ensure an effective flow of information between the government and citizens a fact that was reiterated by IBM Research Africa Chief Scientist, Uyi Stewart. “We saw the need to quickly develop a system to enable communities directly affected by Ebola to provide valuable insight about how to fight it. Using mobile technology, we have given them a voice and a channel to communicate their experiences directly to the government,” said Stewart. Current world Health Organization reports reveal Ebola’s death toll at 4,922 across eight countries Ends..

Magazine vendors bank thousands daily Street vendors selling second-hand magazines can make up to Sh2,100 a day, experts from the Southern African Trust Organisation have revealed. From health magazines to fitness, fashion and lifestyle journals, vendors in many of Kenya’s urban areas are taking home roughly Sh63,000 a month. Street vending represents a significant share of the urban informal economy, said Philomena Muiruri, an author who carried out a study on street vendors in Nairobi. She added: “poverty and high levels of unemployment in Nairobi City have seen the number of street vendors increase as they take up street trading as a means of survival and a livelihood strategy.” By sourcing their supply from libraries with

outdated copies, magazine vendors who need to offload their old stock and households in suburban areas, sellers can amass over 100 copies in a week. The Southern African Trust research shows that on a good day, a vendor can sell up to 10 copies, making a profit of Sh213 per magazine. Vendors can also find old copies from online sellers through local trade platforms like Mobo Free and OLX. They sell the magazines on stands made from wooden pallets. The magazines are priced between Sh50 and Sh300, depending on how old they are. They include the likes of Reader’s Digest, Men’s Health, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Maxim, Healthy Living and Vanity Fair among others.
Kale farmers beat diseases with improved local seed varieties Sukuma wiki farmers in many parts of the country are boosting their yields thanks to a new variety of the popular green vegetable. Through a collaborative project, a team investigating the problem of poor quality kale seed in Kenya has discovered that the best kale plants in come from Kinale, a forested region on the edge of the Rift Valley. The team has worked with kale farmers in Kinale and has since selected
individual plants from the area. The new varieties are greener, sweeter, disease-resistant and have helped farmers like Margaret Ngaithe shift from their traditional Kale seeds to the new and improved variety. The crop is grown most farmers across the country and is consumed at least three times a week by almost every Kenyan household. Majority of the farmers who grow sukuma wiki keep using the same seeds

from local varieties year after year. However, this traditional process carries the risk of spreading seed-borne diseases, particularly ‘black rot’ and ‘leaf spot’, infections that kill most of a farmer’s crops. Most varieties that can survive these diseases are imported and are, therefore, quite expensive. The cheaper local varieties were collected by staff from the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) in Nairobi to help obtain clean, diseasefree seed varieties. Ngaithe, one of the farmers involved in the testing, said: “There is no comparison between the ones I usually plant and the improved ones.” Her new plants are out-performing her local varieties. Ndirangu Njoroge, a Kinale farmer involved in the original trials, has since received training from KARI. Looking at Njoroge’s top performing kale, researchers note that the improved plants are 50 per cent less likely to get infected with diseases. Given time, the partnership could transform kale production in Kenya and offer strong lessons for growing other crops in other regions.

Taking care of your bathroom floor can save you a trip to the E Homes safety is one of the key elements to consider when fixing or improving home spaces. Bathroom floors call for proper fixtures to avoid accidents because of water, soap and other imminent spillages. Wycliffe Asanya of Flamingo Tiles Kenya Ltd, says home owners are warming up to ceramic tiles because they provide this much needed safety. He says ceramic tiles allow drainage of water and they have a good grip. They offer the required grip on the feet, preventing slipperiness. “They are also easy to clean, therefore, they do not retain stains in addition to being durable,” said Asanya. Soft and warm floors are soothing to the feet. Carpets, more so synthetic ones are available to give this comfort. They are designed to let water flow freely while retaining almost none. With wooden floors gaining popularity, naturalists can still use this material in their bath spaces. However, the hardwoods used must have sealants to ensure water does not pass through into them for durability. Fixing experts must also consider their safety by ensuring they are not smooth. A cool feet experience is exciting for others. Natural stone flooring gives bathrooms that cool feel. However, they do not need polishing, because it will make them smooth and hence dangerous. With time, stones are likely to lose the strong grip they
offer. They can be honed or laced with traces of sand. Calling a professional to fix your bathroom floor each time there is a dent is not an option for many. They will prefer having vinyl, which is easy to fix. Vinyl offers flexibility of colour, allowing one to use a preferred pattern. Asanya says whichever material you choose for your bathroom, kitchen or toilet, safety is the key point that must come first before aesthetics and other qualities.
Rejuvenate your tired bricks with pain DIY

Plastering of home exteriors to cover bricks or other building stones has been in vogue for a while. But in recent times, home owners are opting to reinforcing the standout look of bricks by painting them. Coating bricks rekindles discoloured, tired and faded bricks. This is especially after prolonged exposure to strong sunlight or rain, which defaces these stones. Paint coated bricks stand out as bold giving an old house a new, uniform and brave look even after a spirited beating from Mother Nature. Paint also guards bricks against moisture. It seals the pores for moisture entry into the bricks for them to remain dry. While dry, they will also be free from moulds and algae, which make the house look rusty and old. However, some

Skip your way to fitness Most of us would love well-toned and lean bodies— like those of fashion models. But the sheer thought of getting sweaty and subscribing to a gym bursts our bubble. There are just too many workouts and diets out there, but one that is selfom hyped is skipping. Skipping is an age old activity originally meant for children but with huge benefits to our bodies. It is a low cost, convenient and easy to follow exercise routine which can transform you from flab to fab in no time. And here is the good part; skipping can actually help you burn more calories. A thirty minute session a day will burn up to 400 calories. If you cannot skip continuously for the entire thirty minutes you could always break it down to three 10 minute sessions and achieve the same results. Have you been getting breathless quickly when doing daily activities? The reason could be a slow heart rate which translates to less oxygen transported around your body. Skipping increases your heart rate which in turn transports more oxygen around the body. This is good in the long run as it will ensure you feel less breathless while engaging in physical activities including workouts hence you will be more comfortable and tuned to exercise and burn more calories while at it. Say goodbye to flab and thigh dimples and welcome a well-toned body , through regular skipping. As you skip, you tone the lower and upper body muscles as your shoulders and arms work the rope. This leads to more muscle mass and an active metabolism which are the perfect combination for burning calories and firming muscles. Skip to keep fat away.

KCB going for Kenya cup win
Kenya Commercial Bank Rugby Club coach Curtis Olago has asked players to show great form when the Kenya Cup gets underway next month. Olago, who guided the bankers to the fourth Floodlit crown last weekend, said his players should show similar hunger in the topflight league. “We showed great character while defying odds to defend Impala title. Now I
want us to perform the same in the league,” he said. “We gave youngsters an opportunity.. I am glad they took it well and did perform very well. Beating Quin in the finals in such a convincing manners shows intent,” he said. Olago says he needs similar performance that saw his side overcome Impala and ending almost near half decade winless run against Kenya cup champions
Nakuru RFC commonly known as Wanyore. “The team is undergoing transition because there are senior players who have retired and the young guys have to learn the ropes fast. They should be ready to lift the team when necessary because Kenya Cup is a different game,” Olago said. “This season we are going for nothing less than league victory,” said Olago ahead of league start on November 8.
GOING FOR GLORY: KCB players go through a practice session. Coach Curtis Olago has asked his players to show outstanding skills when the Kenya Cup gets underway early next month.
Suarez reveals his relations with Rodgers Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has opened up on his time at Liverpool and his thoughts on former manager Brendan Rodgers. Writing in an upcoming autobiography, titled Crossing The Line: My Story, Suarez lifts the lid on Rodgers’ tiki-taka philosophy. He reveals what the Liverpool squad thought of their manager’s stunt. Rodgers was reported to have presented players with three sealed envelopes in which he claimed were the names of players who
would disappoint him in the upcoming season. The squad, Rodgers said, were to make sure it wasn’t them come the end of the campaign. “We never did find out what was written in the envelopes. I’m sure there were no names, it was just a way of motivating us; a tactic to make sure we gave everything. And in truth it got forgotten pretty quickly.” Suarez also writes about the first time he met Rodgers after the Northern Irishman’s appointment at Liverpool. “Brendan spoke to me in
Spanish and he told me to give him time, to give him a chance, and that I would like the way we were going to play. It would suit me. He said we would bring the ball out on the floor, keep possession and play attacking football. I remember him saying: “It’s not so hard to bring the ball out from the back on the floor, you know.” It is clear the pair had a strong relationship before Suarez’s £75 million move to Barcelona in July. Suarez continues to explain how Rodgers got him on side with his philosophy.

Sofapaka on Sunday beat league leaders Gor Mahia 3-2 to narrow the gap to a solitary point going to the penultimate fixtures fixture of the 2014 season. “Everyone knows this title race is very difficult, all we want is three points from our opponents and that is what we shall strive to get,” he said. Mario Baloteli inspires Liverpool against Swansea The Mario Balotelli soap opera has taken a dramatic twist. The tale has been one of anguish and irritation for Brendan Rodgers since he took a punt on the Italy international 10 weeks ago but it turned to joy and relief as the maligned striker instigated a rousing Liverpool recovery at Swansea City’s expense in the Capital One Cup. Liverpool took advantage of a late red card against Swansea City to prevail 2-1 at Anfield and reach the Capital One Cup quarter-finals. Marvin Emnes fired the visitors in front at Merseyside, before Mario Balotelli stepped off the bench to haul the hosts back into the tie. The real drama was saved for stoppage-time, though, with Federico Fernandez sent off for Swansea and Dejan Lovren benefitting from some sloppy defending to nod home a dramatic winner. Dutch winger Emnes, on his
first start of the season, opened the scoring on 65 minutes when he watched a looping ball over his shoulder and drilled across Brad Jones. Brendan Rodgers then turned to the enigmatic Balotelli, and within seven minutes of his introduction he had restored parity as he met a cross from Fabio Borini with a cushioned volley. A frantic finale was then sparked when Fernandez was given his marching orders for a crunching challenge on Philippe Coutinho and Lovren settled the tie in 95th minute as Gerhard Tremmel got caught under a high free-kick and the Croatian defender diverted the ball into an empty net. Liverpool - without a goal in their last two games, both of which had also been at Anfield - controlled possession in the first half, but remained unable to make it count whenever they probed.

A section of national women team hockey players have threatened to down tools after the union failed to pay allowances. The threat comes as head coach Jos Openda plans to name his side for the second round of the World Hockey League 2. The Kenya team is expected to travel to Uruguay for the second round set for early next month. The coach says he may draft in new faces, including those who did not feature in the World Hockey League 1 at City Park Stadium in September. Sources from the playing unit said selection of new players could
have been triggered by a training boycott after players were not paid allowances for national team assignments during the World League one. “I have no prior info on the ‘impending strike’ and that does not dedicate my move to bring in new players. All I want is to have an open selection where everyone will be given a chance to fight for a place in the team and if they impress me, they will represent the country,” Openda said. The first trials were done two weeks ago at the City Park stadium. The team is yet to start preparations.

Callum Wilson fired past Boaz Myhill with three minutes left to put them into the next round of the competition.
Meanwhile, Chelsea were given a real scare at Greenhaus Meadow as they stuttered to a 2-1 victory over Shrewsbury Town. After a goalless opening period it took just two minutes of the second half for the Blues to opening the scoring as Mohamed Salah awkwardly looped a pass to Didier Drogba who swept home his second goal in two games. As the League Two side looked to nab an equaliser, Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro saw his deflected strike clip the post and eventually they did draw level as Andy Mangan knocked the ball home from a corner. But their joy was shortlived as Jermaine Grandison put the ball past his own goalkeeper, as Didier Drogba attempted to get on the end of a Willian cross, handing the Blues the win.
