Christians join suit filed by gay activists
A group of Christian professionals have been enjoined as interested parties in a case where gays and lesbians are seeking legal recognition. Through lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui, the group told court the case wants to introduce a criminal association which goes against public policy. “This application seeks to advance something which has been criminalised in this country and we seek to be enjoined as an interested party to give the court a diverse view of the matter at hand,” Kinyanjui told a three judge bench comprising judges Mumbi Ngungi, Isaac Lenaola and Geoge Odunga. Christians join suit filed by gay activists From Page 1 The judges later allowed them to be enjoined but directed that the process should not delay hearing of the case. A group of gays and lesbians recently moved to court seeking to have the Government compelled to register an “exclusive organization” they have formed. The group claimed failure to register the organisation amounts to violation of their fundamental
rights. In suit papers filed early this month, the homosexuals said their rights are protected by the constitution in the values for human dignity, equity, social justice and inclusiveness. “The best relief under the circumstances is the court to find that the decision to refuse to register the National Gay and Lesbians Human Rights Commission was arrived at
in a manner that violated the Constitution,” the homosexuals said through the Katiba Institute which filed the case. But the Christian professionals, including lawyers and doctors, want to be heard before the case is determined. Katiba Institute avers individuals who have a different sexual orientation should be registered to promote their welfare and freedom. “The primary group that was to
benefit from the registration is a vulnerable and marginalised one. It is such that it requires protection of the law to ameliorate the negative experiences it would be subjected to if the will of the majority was to prevail,” they said. Only yesterday, transgender activists filed a suit at the court seeking to be delinked from the proceedings claiming they have suffered and continued to suffer societal prejudice having
been lumped together with gays and lesbians who are seeking recognition. “While gays and lesbians and bisexuals fall within the scope of sexual orientation, the transgender and intersex persons suffer from gender identity disorder, which is a biological condition,” they told the court through lawyer Colbert Ojiambo calling on it to draw a line between the two cases. Hearing continues.
it will come: Brittany Maynard says she will eventually fulfill her mission.
US woman likely to postpone suicide mission
Brittany Maynard, a 29-year-old woman with terminal cancer, who has made headlines after promising to take her life in Oregon on Saturday, November 1 says she might just not do it. Maynard says although it is something that is bound to happen, there is a chance it might not happen this weekend. “I still feel good enough and I still have enough joy and I still laugh and smile
with my family and friends enough that it doesn’t seem like the right time right now,” Maynard says in a video released to CNN on Wednesday. “But it will come, because I feel myself getting sicker. It’s happening each week.” Early October Maynard shared her decision to choose assisted suicide, becoming the public face for the nonprofit Compassion and Choices, which advocates for end-of-life choice.
Maynard was diagnosed with a stage 4 malignant brain tumor in April, a diagnosis she was told would be “a terrible, terrible way to die,” she said in a video posted on YouTube. Maynard moved from California to Portland, Oregon, USA so she can legally kill herself with lethal medication. She is scheduled to die Saturday, November 1.
Kenya ignoring disaster prevention, says report Kenya is spending more on disaster response instead of funding mitigating programmes. A report dubbed ‘Domestic Humanitarian response in East Africa’, says the country spends a huge chunk of funds on emergency and relief and refugee assistance. In 2010, Sh3.92billion was spent on refugee and emergence response programmes.
More than Sh2.7 billion was spent on refugee affairs. Addressing the release of the report in a Nairobi hotel, World Vision International representative to the conference Paul Gol said Kenya is not investing enough resources in preventing disaster. “Government and nongovernmental agencies are concentrating on responding, not
preventing crisis. This increases the expenditure on response,” Gol said. Gol said funding must be directed toward risk reduction and resilience because it is the least funded section of crisis management. He said disunited approach to crisis creates more loopholes for theft of funds that could otherwise boost resilience and preventive
mechanisms. “There is need for harmonised action towards establishment of resilience mechanisms to avoid duplication of roles by response agencies. “The funders do not see results to their aid because it cannot be traced to direct person in a community who has benefited,” said Gol.
Transparency International representative Nicolas Seris said corruption has been discouraging donors. He said the mismanagement of funds has also generated donor fatigue. “Humanitarian aid is not meant for personal gain. Funders lose trust when they cannot see results of the money in alleviating disaster stricken people,” Seris said.

Kenya has the fourth highest reports of bribery in East Africa Kenya has the fourth mosthighest cases of bribery in East Africa, experts from Transparency International have revealed. In one of their most recent surveys, the non-governmental organization that monitors and publicizes corporate and political corruption, has found that bribery is common among all of East Africa’s member states. The likelihood of bribery was highest in Uganda where a citizen seeking government services encounters the highest incidents of corruption. Burundi comes in second, followed by Uganda. Kenya if Fourth while Rwanda is fifth. In Uganda, citizens have a 26.8 per cent chance of being encouraged or forced to pay a bribe.
In Burundi, there is an 18.6 per cent chance that someone seeking government services will pay a bribe. In Tanzania, the chances of facing the same incidents stands at 12.9 per cent while in Kenya the likelihood of being forced to pay a bribe is at 7.9 per cent. Rwanda’s citizens face a 4.4 per cent chance of being forced or encouraged to pay a bribe. “Bribery remains a key challenge for East Africans to access public services,” said Noel Nkuruziza, the President of ABUCO, a Transparency International affiliate. He added that the the Judiciary, Police and the Land Services in Burundi are among the top ten most bribery prone institutions in East Africa.
Trader shot, pedestrians robbed in night of terror
MATTERS SECURITY: A police officer stands next to the body of a robber who was gunned down in a past incident. A businessman sustained bullet wounds after thugs attacked him at his home in Karen on Wednesday night.
Robbers shot a businessman at his Karen home, Nairobi, during a night raid. In a night of terror, pedestrians were robbed in traffic jams on the capital’s major roads. Stephen Thuo was shot and injured in the leg after allegedly resisting the robbers. He is admitted in hospital in stable condition, police said. The gang was apparently interested in valuables, including a laptop, which they later stole along with money before escaping. Meanwhile, a gang raided a petrol station in Ngong Town and snatched more than Sh750,000. Witnesses said the robbers used a motorbike and were dressed in aprons and sacks when they ambushed the station
attendants. One of the attackers whipped out an AK 47 rifle as he demanded for cash which they grabbed and left without firing a shot. Police have launched a manhunt for the robbers. Police are also looking for 10 gangsters who have been attacking motorists and pedestrians in traffic jams in the city’s major roads. The group last evening posed as street boys last evening as they terrorised targets during the rush hours along Mbagathi Way, Valley Road, Kenyatta and Moi avenues spotting football jerseys and carrying sacks. Police say the thugs attack between 6pm and 8pm. Those who resist are threatened with knives or smeared with human waste.
Diets high in fat and low in carbohydrates, such as the ketogenic or modified Atkins may reduce seizures in adults with tough-totreat epilepsy, according to a review of a new research. The study published in the October 29, 2014, online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology Epilepsy is a nervous system disorder in which the nerve cells in the brain work abnormally, causing seizures. About 50 million people have epilepsy worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. “We need new treatments for the 35 percent of people with epilepsy whose seizures are not stopped by medications,” says the research whose findings were published yesterday American journal Neurology. “The ketogenic diet is often used in children, but little research has been done on how effective it is in adults.” The ketogenic and modified Atkins diets include items such as bacon, eggs, heavy cream, butter, leafy green vegetables and fish. The ketogenic diet consists of a ratio of fat to protein/ carbohydrates of three or four to one by weight. The modified Atkins diet has a one-to-one fat to carbohydrate or protein ratio by weight. Scientists reviewed five studies on the ketogenic diet with a total of 47 people included in the analysis and five studies on the modified Atkins diet with 85 people included.

Poverty the biggest driver of rural-urban child trafficking Poverty is the biggest contributor to child trafficking especially from rural to urban areas, the findings of a study done in Nairobi’s Mukuru and Mathare slums show. Standard eight pupils, mostly girls, who fail to join secondary schools are at the highest risk of being trafficked. The girls are taken as house helps in Nairobi or sex objects for tourists in Kwale and Lamu Counties for the benefit of traffickers and close relatives. Speaking yesterday during the launch of a project dubbed Contributing to the elimination of urban child trafficking in Kenya, Terre de Hommes Country Manager Kenya, Angela Nyamu said the community does not see trafficking as a big deal especially when the children work for economic gain of their family. “Economic migrations is largely accepted in Kenyan society as it is a way out

Prosecution is the biggest challenge to expediting cases of trafficking,” Nyamu said. The manager said financial challenges are hindering elimination of this inhuman business.
NGO Council opposes foreign funding cap
Study says High fats help fight Epilepsy The rate of new Ebola infections appears to be declining in Liberia although the crisis remains far from over, the World Health Organization has said. WHO assistant director general Dr Bruce Aylward who made the remarks in Geneva however warned that the disease has the potential to appear in many patterns and that the latest observation does not necessarily mean cases are dropping. “It appears that the trend is real in Liberia and there

Nyamu asked the Government to support setting up of referral centres and other intervention mechanisms. The project was officially launched by Nairobi City County Chief Officer for Public Service Management Mr. Leboo ole Morintat, who represented Governor Evans Kidero. With the help of Dutch, NGO Terre de Hommess, they will work with other stakeholders to wipe out trafficking in the Mathare and Mukuru slums in Nairobi by December 2015. The funds will be used to finance protection of survivors through rescue and rehabilitation, provision of legal support in prosecution and raising awareness in the community on the vice and how to deal with it. A total of 11,050 children will benefit from the programme. Kidero’s representative praised the project and pledged county support to see it success.
may indeed be a slowing of the epidemic there. There is increasing evidence that these countries can get on top of this,” he said. The number of new cases in the nation appears to be declining, with fewer burials and lab confirmations, and less-cramped hospitals, the World Health Organization said. If the trend continues, the hardest hit nation will get a much-needed break. The deadly virus has left at least 4,922 people dead mostly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
The Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) Council says it is opposed to the proposed 15 percent foreign funding cap for NonGovernmental Organisations, but agrees there is need for accountability. The council argues that some of the organisations are funded entirely from overseas, which would negatively affect their activities. The council’s Chief Executive Officer Kevinnah Layatum however says they support the rest of the amendments to the Public Benefit Organisations Act saying
they seek to nurture and encourage such organisations to reflect and work on national interests. “NGOs receive monies on behalf of the public and just like the government, they should be accountable and transparent in their dealings more so where the annual inflows to such institutions amount to Sh300 billion annually,” she stated. She explained that the proposed amendments to the PBO Act also seek, “to consolidate all registration and regulation of NGOs under one roof and establish a comprehensive and

systematised regulatory framework for organisations carrying out public benefit activities.” “This will bring discipline in the sector and provide the necessary information for effective planning and connected purposes.”
She was speaking during a public awareness forum on the proposed amendments on Wednesday. Jeniffer Shamalla a facilitator of the forum said the requirement to have consolidated registration and reporting of Public Benefit Organisations is one way of improving the society’s management of the country security challenges. The Miscellaneous Amendment Bill 2013, published on October 30, last year seeks to cap the amount of foreign funds NGOs can get to 15 per cent of their budget.

theindustry Experts upbeat over toy sector growth potential Though the country produces many hand-made toys on small-scale basis, the toy market is, without a doubt, underdeveloped. Experts argue that the presence of toymaking factories in Kenya has the potential to create thousands of jobs. This will boost the economy and improve the livelihoods of many. A European Competitiveness and Sustainable Industrial Policy Consortium, (ECSIP Consortium) report shows that while Kenya does not export toys, it receives imports from European Union member states and China. The research shows that if Kenya were to set up toy making factories in partnership with other countries that have a stake in the sector, then it stands to make millions. In EU, the traditional toy sector directly employs 51,000 people and thousands more across the value chain. EU’s toy retail sector is the largest single market for goods and services worldwide. It is estimated that EU market for traditional toys and games was worth €15.8 billion (Sh1.8 trillion) in 2011 at retail sale prices. Experts from research group Euromonitor International say the sector has a high potential if people’s income levels continue to rise as they have been in countries like Kenya.

Kenya’s ease of doing business rankings improve slightly The business climate in the country has improved slightly according to the latest World Bank report. The 2015 Ease of Doing Business index reveals that Kenya has risen up from position 137 last year to 136 this year in its business ranking. Speaking after receiving the 2015 Ease of Doing Business Results released by the World Bank, Cabinet Secretary for Industrialization and Enterprise Development, Mr. Adan Mohamed said although the report did not capture key reforms the government undertook last year, Kenya’s business climate is doing well and that more can be done to improve the business world. “These latest results do not capture

the reforms undertaken by the Government in the last 12 months. For example, registering a company now takes 1 day up from 32 days a year ago. We see an improving business climate as a result of the reforms that various government agencies have undertaken over the last 12 months,” said Mohamed. Mohamed was optimistic that the recently launched Business Environment Delivery unit will have a positive effect on the country’s future rankings. CEO of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, Carole Kariuki appreciated the ongoing reforms across many government agencies and expressed confidence that the country was on
the right path. “This report sends a clear signal of the Government’s commitment to improving the business environment which is a critical necessity if we are to attract investments and grow our economy,” said Carole. She added that Kenya has become one of the leading destinations for international companies which choose to set up their headquarters in the country. The World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business report compiles business information across 189 countries. Over the next two years, the World Bank group will make extensive changes to its ranking procedures.
Many Kenyans are discovering the benefits of having multiple income streams. Running a taxi cab enterprise is one of the investment ventures that present great income generation opportunities. Taxi Fleet Operator, Thuo Wambugu and Africab Tours Managing Director, Titus Mumo can think of 5 million reasons to start a taxi business. In just two and a half years, Wambugu has helped his colleague reach an average turnover of Sh5 million a month. However, for anyone planning to start a taxi business, they will go through a number of procedures before their cars rev off the parking lot. Assuming you have your car(s) already in place, your first step is to get in touch with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials.
The taxman will charge you an application fee of Sh1,250, which will allow you to carry of goods and passengers. The fee also applies to matatus, buses and tourist vehicles. There is also a license fee, which Authority officials say may vary according to the carrying capacity of each vehicle. For instance, the amount payable for a 5 to 7 passenger vehicle is Sh1,500 while that of an 8 to 18 passenger vehicle is Sh2,000. Vehicles with a 26 and above passengers capacity attract a Sh3,000 fee. The processing time is instant. The license should be handed on the spot. It is valid for one year. Those intending to apply can visit the Authority’s online portal on ‘kra.go.ke’ or contact the Transport Licensing Board through the KRA head office by dialling 020-310900.
infrastructure Nairobi to get Sh7 billion from EU to fight congestion A bus transit system that will reduce traffic problems in Nairobi is set to receive Sh7 billion in funding from the European Union (EU) over the next four years. The project will also receive additional funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Investment Bank, the World Bank and UN Habitat, among other international donors. The route consists of four road links in Nairobi that will reduce traffic snarl-ups. They are currently under construction and include Likoni Road, Lusaka Road, Enterprise Road and Muratina Street. Since 2011, the EU has been working with the government to help tackle the capital’s transport challenges. “The European Union is committed to supporting the
construction of a modern transport system that will benefit those who walk, cycle, bus and drive around Kenya’s growing capital,” Erik Habers, the EU Head of Development in Kenya has said Speaking during a previous announcement, he added: “There are complex issues to sort out and it will take time to see the real benefits. He noted that the EU is “in talks with government about supporting the construction of specific bus lanes alongside major roads in the capital. We expect to have more details on that soon.” “We recognise that people need action now to relieve the traffic jams,” Habers said. “I am pleased to announce that four of the anticongestion road links are currently under construction in the Industrial area and in Eastleigh.”

SHADES LIGHTER Having a lighter complexion has become the new obsession. Gone are the days when there was no debate about black being beautiful. We have come the extent where we need advertisements to convince Kenyans that black is indeed beautiful. A lot of people, including celebrities, have taken to whitening or rather bleaching their skins in a bid to feel more beautiful. Take the example of socialite and video vixen, Vera Sidika. She stirred controversy when she publicly admitted to skin lightening. “Looking good is my business. My body is my business,” she told Larry Madowo on the trend in June. She disclosed that ever since she lightened her skin, her business has been booming. She further said that having a lighter skin, has it is own perks—For
instance, she says, she gets through security checkpoints without being scanned. But she is not the only one in the skin bleaching docket. Jamaican dancehall jailbird, Vybz Kartel, baffled his fans when his skin went pale. Ironically, he released a song (School) soon after, which dissuaded young kids from skin lightening and instead urged them to concentrate on studies and aspire for greatness. Cameroonian pop star Dencia, who slammed Lupita Nyong’o for signing a contract with cosmetic company Lancome, accusing her of bowing to ‘white people companies’, launched her own skincare cream called “whitenicious”. She defended it claiming it has no bleaching agents but affirmed that it had lightened her complexion. She went on to reveal that
Dencia, before and after
Sidika, before and after
most of her clients are African Americans. Dencia told Ebony magazine that lightening her skin was just an exploration. “Why did I get a couple of shades lighter than I was? That’s a personal choice. That is what I wanted to be. And honestly, I just wanted to. I’m very daring. I like trying things. I’m not doing it because I want to have boyfriends. And I’m not doing it because I want anybody to accept me. It’s because I just wanted to do it.” There is a misconception among the youth that light skin automatically makes one beautiful and intelligent while dark skin is frowned upon. This is blamed on insecurities caused by society’s preferential treatment of light skinned individuals. Dark skinned people with low selfesteem then succumb to the pressure. They turn to skin
lightening treatments in order to live up to the set standards. Because of the desperation to impress, people go to great extremes, including subjecting themselves to crude procedures in backstreet bleaching jointmost of which turn awry. People with a darker shade are made to look and feel less valuable and ugly. This is evident in schools, playgrounds and work places. Children can form cliques according to their skin tone, where the lighter ones are regarded better looking. Amanda, a student from a prestigious International school in Nairobi says her classmates have grouped themselves according to skin colour. The light-skinned, Caucasians and Indian girls hang out together while the dark complexioned ones have their own caucus. “Girls of
Indian descent but with a darker shade relate well with the dark skinned African girls,” said Amanda. “Usually the light-skinned girls are rude because they think they are hotter than those of us who are dark.” Amanda’s sentiments are shared with Martha Nyawira, an aspiring actress, who says she has had difficulty getting roles because of her complexion. “I once auditioned for a chance to be featured in a music video where the artiste only preferred light skinned girls,” said Nyawira. “This is very common in the showbiz industry.” Popular ragga artiste Redsan was once slammed for saying he had to import white dancers for his video because no Kenyan girl could fit the bill. Could be the reason why Vera Sidika, once a video vixen, got fifty shades
lighter, in less than ten years? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 77 per cent of Nigerian women use bleaching creams. Reason being most Nigerian men scramble for light skinned women compared to dark skinned ones. That is why bleaching is a thriving trend in Nigeria and other West African nations. Doctor Ramadhan Mawenzi, a dermatologist from Nakuru, points out that bleaching is a harmful affair. “It is dangerous and no one should try it,” he said. “Skin whitening has grave health implications like skin weakening and irritability that exposes the body to UV rays, can lead to skin cancer, neurological and kidney damage due to high level of mercury used in the creams among others,” warned Dr Mawenzi.

not been found guilty yet. In this, Pistorious found consolation and took it as support. No wonder he didn’t hesitate to direct message her during a court session. Or maybe he just has a thing for models even in tough times. Reeva Steenkamp was a model too.
The new age of
cyber bullying These days bullying does not happen in school corridors and playgrounds. It has found a fertile ground on the internet. Social media, in particular, has created a platform where everyone can say whatever they wish and often, without consequence. Every post or photo you put up is always subject to judgement. Even when you think a certain post is harmless, it can be taken out of context. When people are behind a computer screen and have internet connection they can do anything and everything. After all, nobody will know who they are. Kenyans on Twitter, famously known KOT are most notorious when it comes local cyberbullying. This group, mostly made up of college going students and new graduates, is known to take on countries (recently Nigeria), multinational corporations such as broadcaster CNN, and high-ranking individuals like the South African Sports Minister. They are known for
their ruthless jabs and never back down from a fight. KOT are the quickest to comment on something, start a trending hashtag and create memes where possible. Case in point: Radio host Adelle Onyango was recently the subject of KOT’s attacks, over her teeth. There was a particular meme that compared her to a monkey and Adelle took to Social media to wish it off. Her post read, in part: “#TeamADELLE y’all are young people some of whom are being bullied now... it is NOT a reflection of YOUR character or YOUR beauty-NO. But a reflection of the bully’s DAMAGED character! I hope these words do something for you! KEEP SMILING!” Cyberbullying has become such a big monster, even leading to suicide. In 2009, Jessica Logan an 18-year-old high school student sent a nude photo to her boyfriend. After they broke up, the boyfriend circulated the photo to other
students, who started calling her names on social media and through text messages. In the end, the teenager could not stand it and killed herself just to escape the bullying. In September 2012, Amanda Todd, also a teenager, posted a video on YouTube titled My story: Struggling, bullying, suicide, self-harm. The teenager used cards to talk about being blackmailed and bullied on social media. A month later, she hanged herself at her home. Even as we all revere the tech world and applaud the ever changing communication scenario, lurking in the dark corridors of cyber space is a grinning bull, waiting to make one’s life difficult. Beware!

Comrades want their security made a priority Insecurity on campus has caused riots at Nairobi, Kenyatta and other universities around the country, but the institutions have taken it lightly. Security was put to test over the weekend as tragedy blanketed St. Paul’s University after one of their students, Dennis Chirwa, was stubbed to death by unknown assailants. Chirwa, 25, was the son of Malawi’s Deputy High Commissioner to Kenya Marcel Chirwa. He had gone out to have fun when he was stubbed seven times while returning at night to his residence in Limuru. The university said it was sad that the third year communication student had to fall into the hands of robbers and asked for prayers. Student leaders have since threatened to go on a major strike if their safety is not made a priority.

Telecom Airtel has embarked on the search for the best music artiste from campus. The company’s activation team, under the Trace Music Star campaign, has been going round campuses encouraging potential participants to enroll. Once an individual has enrolled, they need to call 0900 733 733 from their Airtel numbers to be discovered. The competition does not limit individuals to one performance. They can call as many times as possible to give their best. Performance can be rendered in a language of their choice, and the song can be from any genre and after registration, friend can listen and vote for it online. Airtel CEO Adil El Youssefi explains the process of registration: “When you call 0900 733 733, you follow the voice prompts and choose either the karaoke service or the competition; after one has finished singing within a 15-second to three-minute
Strutting on the ramp If you thought the runway was a reserve for ladies in towering heels and make up you thought wrong! letoya Johnstonne, a high fashion model and runway coach will dazzle you with his confident strut and immense knowledge of the fashion world. You can also catch him at Nato Design house, where he is the Public relations and Marketing Manager. XN: What does your job entail? LJ: My job entails quite a lot. As a model, I showcase designer clothes both on the runway and in still photo-shoots. As a model trainer, that is self-explanatory. I train both male and female models how to walk on the runways as well as encourage them to be the best they can be. I also direct how photos should be captured to tell the intended story. Finally I help designers come up with unique stunning creations XN: How many hours do you Work in a Day? LJ: The fashion world does not have a specific time frame. I am flexible in terms of hours as my work depends on what my clients expect of me and the job at hand. XN: How much do You Earn? LJ: (Smiles) Thanks for the question. What I earn depends on the work at hand. XN: What qualifications do you need for your job? LJ: First of all you need passion for fashion. Again you need good experience and creativity. Like they say, experience is the best teacher and a mature wine is that which has stayed for years. XN: Was this your dream career? LJ: I live and breathe fashion. There is no great thing that liberates in life like fashion or love. They are twins hence
it has always been my dream. In fact, I think when I was born my first cry was “high fashion.” XN: Does your job interfere with your social life? LJ: Like I said, fashion is my life therefore it does not in any way interfere with my social life. XN: What is the best part of your job? LJ: The best part of my job is seeing my models turn out to be what they are expected to be and turning enemies into friends. XN: What is the worst part of your job? LJ: The worst part of my job is dealing with know-it-all models. You just can’t tell them anything. It’s quite a daunting task to convince them otherwise. I am also saddened when models compare trainers. I think they should take each trainer as an individual and combine the positive aspects of all trainers so as to become great. XN: Any Advice for people who want to venture in to your line of work? LJ: Anyone can be whoever they want to be. All you need to know is that for every rise you make, there are always humongous thorns ready to prick you. It’s your job to learn how to endure the pain. Focus on the goals you would want to achieve and push through. People love heroes but they never focus on the worst side that made the heroes become legends.

aquarius Jan 20 - Feb
Meticulous and sincere effort on your part may have led to a recent increase in income. Today you might be thinking of reworking your budget. While others might throw caution to the wind at a time like this, today you might go too far in the opposite direction.

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19
Emotions stemming from past experiences might cause you to assume undue responsibilities, particularly concerning family members. Whatever tasks you assume may allow you to release old traumas and give form to your plans and ambitions.
taurus Apr 20 - May 20
Some may know exactly what buttons to push in order to get you to do what they want. Don’t be sucked into guilt or other negative emotions. Help others if you wish, Taurus, but recognize that you’re doing it because you want to and not because you feel you have to.
gemini May 21 - Jun 21

City Hall on track over the traffic jam monster An agreement by county governments neighbouring Nairobi City that seeks to reduce traffic jams is welcome. Hopefully it will be carried to full term to tame the outrageous traffic jams (Governors finally back city metropolitan plan, October 22, 2014).
Several plans have in the past been suggested but have failed to be implemented. This has left residents in captivity of sickening snarl-ups. In addition to the plans, increment of parking fees has failed to deter motorists from scrambling for
space in the city. The plan will save the more than Sh50millon lost daily by the traffic monster that forces many to rise early to beat the jams. Nairobi was started as a residential area for just a few people more than 100 years
ago when it was a mere rail station. Now it houses more than 4million people daily. The figure is expected to further escalate by the year 2020. Besides infrastructure, decentralising services from the city centre to easily accessible
satellite towns will play a role in their growth. Governor Evans Kidero should steer the programme and will be always be remembered if he succeeds. — Titus Kivindyo, Nairobi

Kipsang to race in New York Marathon
Former marathon world record holder Wilson Kipsang (pictured) will compete in the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday. Kipsang, 32, will run his debut New York City Marathon. He travelled to New York for the race in 2012 before the event was cancelled due to Super Storm Sandy. In 2013, Kipsang won New York half marathon in 61:02. He later set a marathon world record of 2:03:23 in the BMW Berlin Marathon victory. Kipsang is familiar with roads in the Big Apple and has won the half marathon in the past. He leads a men’s field that includes past champions Geoffrey Mutai, Gebre Gebremariam, Meb Keflezighi and Olympic gold medalist Stephen Kiprotich. On the women’s side, New York City’s Buzunesh Deba and Kenya’s Mary Keitany will race against reigning champion Priscah Jeptoo, 2011 winner Firehiwot Dado, 2010 champion (and two-time world champion) Edna Kiplagat and two-time victor Jelena Prokopcuka.
Nigeria risk Fifa ban for firing soccer federation There is a realistic chance Nigeria will be banned from all football unless a court decision that sacked the country’s recently elected FA executives is not overturned by Friday. A leadership crisis has hamstring the African champions for the past four months despite several interventions by Fifa, who have warned it will slap a lengthy ban on it. Last week, a group led by Chris Giwa secured a court ruling that sacked the Nigerian Football Federation
(NFF) executive committee led by Amaju Pinnick. Giwa, who maintains he was elected NFF president on August 26 although Fifa refused to recognise it, took the matter to court in contravention of FIFA statutes forbidding football issues to be deliberated in a civil court. But a letter from Fifa secretary-general Jerome Valcke to Pinnick said the organisation had extended the deadline until Friday. “We inform you that if by Friday
31 October 2014 at midday Nigerian time we have not received proof that the case (the Jos Federal High Court ruling that sacked the Pinnick led NFF board) has been definitively withdrawn from court, we will refer the case to the FIFA Emergency Committee for implementation of the suspension,” said Valcke in his letter.. On Tuesday, the sports minister was locked in a meeting with Pinnick in a bid to ensure Nigeria avoids the ban.

Heavy defeat on Anelka’s return to action
Well-travelled French striker Nicolas Anelka (pictured) suffered a heavy defeat in India after his return to action Tuesday following a fivematch ban for an antisemitic gesture known as a “quenelle”. The 35-year-old former Arsenal, Chelsea, Juventus and Real Madrid star saw his Mumbai City FC team blasted 5-1 by Chennaiyin FC in the new Indian Super League (ISL) in the southern city of Chennai. It was the third defeat in four matches for the Peter Reid-coached Mumbai team following the 2-0 loss to Northeast United and a 3-0 setback against Atletico de Kolkata. The lone win came against FC Pune City who they beat 5-0. Anelka, who missed the first three games to complete the ban, played the entire 90 minutes but failed to make up for
the absence of Mumbai’s other top player, Freddie Ljungberg of Sweden, who is out of the eightteam league because of a hamstring injury. Until he joined Mumbai for an undisclosed fee, Anelka had been without a club after he was fired by West Brom early this year for the “quenelle” gesture. Anelka won 69 French caps and scored 14 goals in an international career which ended in disgrace when he was thrown out of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa following a row with coach Raymond Domenech. He was handed an 18-match ban for that bust-up. The 10-week ISL is modelled along the lines of cricket’s cash-rich Indian Premier League, with veteran, if ageing, former international greats fronting each team.

No neutral ground for Ingwe, Sofapaka clash AFC Leopards Secretary General George Aladwa insists that their match against Sofapaka on Saturday will be staged at the Mumias Sports Complex. Aladwa was reacting to pleas by the opposition to have the match moved to a neutral ground preferably Afraha Stadium in Nakuru or the Kasarani stadium. He said it’s the home team Ingwe that will decide where the match will be played. “I doesn’t make sense saying you’ve received threats and therefore crying for a neutral playing ground when we all know the match will be played under closed doors,” he said adding that he views that as an attempt to favour their opponents.
Alwada borrowed controversial Italian footballer Mario Balloteli’s famous words “Why Always Me” to highlight the plight of the club. “It’s always us, from stealing and hooliganism to changing match venues. That leaves us wondering,” he explained. “Furthermore, we have a contract with our sponsors Mumias Sugar that the first two matches of the first leg and last two matches of second leg be played in Mumia. Sofapaka’s fixture is second last of the season,” he continued. He called upon Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to put their house in order because his team is already in Mumias after playing Chemelil last Sunday in Kisumu. Djokovic going for third Paris title World number one Novak Djokovic celebrated his return to competition since becoming a father last week with a 6-3, 6-4 second round victory over Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber at the Paris Masters. The 27-year-old defending
champion showed the flashes of brilliance that has seen him win seven Grand Slams, on the way to a third round meeting against either American 13th seed John Isner or French crowd-pleaser Gael Monfils. The Serbian, whose wife Jelena gave birth to a baby boy Stefan on
October 21 and is chasing a third title in Paris, secured early breaks in both sets to lay the foundations for his victory. “It was very, very good because it’s not easy, the first match and being indoors, so I’m very happy,” said Djokovic.
“I still don’t quite feel 100 per cent physically and the court threw up a lot of high bounces but I played a quality match and was very concentrated. “It’s incredible to be a father and I dedicate this victory to my wife Jelena and Stefan.
“I’m very proud to be a father and I’m very proud of my wife for handling the birth in a great way. She’s back home recovering now, with our little boy. “This was my first match as a father and it can only inspire me to play my best tennis,” he added.

Maradona accuses lover of pinching his jewellery
Former Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona on Wednesday filed a theft complaint against girlfriend Rocio Oliva after a video was released that allegedly shows him hitting her.
Rodriguez praises Real teammate Isco’s quality James Rodriguez says he is surprised at the quality of Real Madrid teammate Isco. He says it is up to coach Carlo Ancelotti to decide whether to recall Gareth Bale when he returns from injury. Bale’s most recent back problem has seen Isco and James start on either side of midfield in Madrid’s last three games. These include a of Levante, win at Liverpool and Saturday’s 3-1 defeat of Barcelona in the season’s first clasico. The results and the excellent passing football have led many Blancos fans to call for Bale’s benching when he returns to full fitness. Ancelotti has maintained the Wales international will play when he is available. James said Ancelotti picked the team and the current first team is doing well. “That is a technical decision,” the Colombia international said. “I will keep working to be available to the boss. With the 4-4-2 we are more comfortable and results have been good.” James, who moved from Monaco last summer, said of all his new teammates, he had been most surprised by Isco’s ability. All the (Madrid) players have a lot of quality,” James said. James said he and teammate Cristiano Ronaldo had been confident at halftime in last weekend’s clasico, when the score was 1-1, that Madrid would win the game.
“I spoke to Diego and he filed the complaint,” Oliva said. Oliva, 22, has a turbulent relationship with 53-year-old Maradona. He lives in Dubai and has a sports promotion contract.
Argentine TV channels have released a short video supposedly shot by Oliva in a room in Maradona’s home. In the blurry footage, Oliva can be heard saying “stop, stop” as if trying to stop an
attack. Maradona has said he had knocked the phone from her hands but denies hitting Oliva, a female footballer. Oliva said she was not responsible for the video’s release
and blamed an unnamed “nephew” of Maradona. In March, Maradona accused Oliva of stealing jewelry and other valuable items. The couple are a staple of Argentina’s tabloid and celebrity press.
Spurs eye next match victory after Dallas win
HEAVY HITTER: Toronto Raptors’ Amir Johnson (15) drives to the net between San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobli (20) and guard Patty Mills (8). San Antonio started defense of their NBA championship with a 101-100 win over Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday.
San Antonio’s guard Manu Ginobili scored 20 points as the champions started defense of their NBA championship with a 101-100 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday. They are hoping for improved performance when they visit the Phoenix Suns on Friday. “I wasn’t confident,” Ginobili said. “It worried me. At same time, I knew the beginning was (Tuesday).” Guard Tony Parker led San Antonio with 23 points. Parker hit a three-point shot -- his fourth of the game -- to give the Spurs their margin of victory with 1:07 remaining. Forward Tim Duncan produced 14 points and 13 rebounds. Parker’s basket came after Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki gave his team the lead with a 16-foot jump shot at the 1:28 mark. The Mavericks trailed by 10 with less than seven minutes remaining.
Dallas had a chance to win the game after Parker’s shot, but forward Chandler Parsons missed a long 3-pointer with one second left. Ginobili helped the Spurs secure their fifth NBA championship in June despite playing with a stress fracture in his right leg during the Finals. He rested during the summer, prohibited by the Spurs from competing with the Argentine national team. Ginobili returned to basketball covered in rust; witness the poor shooting in preseason games. “He was like zero for 50 in preseason and had like 19 turnovers per game,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “But tonight he was Manu Ginobili. He was unbelievable.” San Antonio unveiled its 2014 championship banner in a pregame ceremony that started with a film clip narrated by ubiquitous actor Samuel L. Jackson.
Ref Clattenburg axed over protocol breach Top-flight referee Mark Clattenburg (left) has been dropped from officiating this weekend for two breaches of protocol. He broke Premier League code by speaking on phone to Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock after the West Brom draw. The 39-year-old later left the ground alone to drive to Newcastle to watch pop star Ed Sheeran in concert. The referee body, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, says officials must travel to and from the ground together for integrity and security.
Premier League rules state that all officials must be present during a conversation with a manager. This means an official cannot make or take calls from club managers away from the ground Clattenburg also talked to Palace manager Neil Warnock while in his car though the League code allows officials to speak to managers only after a game. The Premier League called it ‘an internal matter’ that Clattenburg had not being given a match before expected Champions League duties next week.

Newcastle dump holders City out of League Cup Newcastle United piled fresh misery on faltering Manchester City with an impressive 2-0 win at the Etihad Stadium to dump the holders out of the League Cup. Few would have given the Toon Army much of a chance, particularly as Alan Pardew continued to show his disregard for cup competitions by naming a second string XI. But the young charges repaid their manager’s faith handsomely with a blistering start that brought an early award as 18 year old Rolando Aarons put the visitors in front after just six minutes. The Magpies’ harrying was causing City problems and after Fernandinho poorly relinquished possession, Aarons seized the ball and sent a fabulous strike through Willy Caballero’s legs. Newcastle had to put in a hell of a shift in defence to repel a strong Blues side and when the Toon’s backline was breached, reserve goalkeeper Rob Elliot came to his side’s rescue, denying Stevan Jovetic and Yaya Toure with fine saves. Substitute Moussa Sissoko netted the decisive goal on 75 minutes, bursting through the Blues’ feeble defence and firing home to send the travelling supporters delirious. Elsewhere, Graziano Pelle’s last gasp strike sent Southampton into the quarter-finals as they beat a ten-man Stoke 3-2 at the Britannia Stadium. Tottenham made it into the last-eight as they ended Brighton’s cup dream with a comprehensive 2-0 win at White Hart Lane.

Gusii-based Shabana FC narrowed Zoo Kericho’s National Super League Zone B lead to a solitary point with a 2-0 win over St. Joseph at Afraha Stadium yesterday. The result worked in favour the former Kenyan Premier League side as Zoo lost to Finlays in Naivasha. Shabana have not played in the top flight league since 1996. Francis Ocholla struck the 55th minute as Dennis Ongeri scored the winner with quarter an hour of play to go. Ocholla finished off a neat pass from right-back
Steven Ogati, in front of the home fans who turned up for the rain marred-encounter. Shabana dominated the match, especially in second half. They extended their lead on the 76th minute when Ongeri did justice to a neat one-two with Ocholla and top scorer Cornellius Juma. “Victory is very good for us. We are now confident of winning our final match at home,” noted goal scorer Ongeri. “The morale is very high in the team and everybody is relishing the prospect of playing in the
Kenyan Premier League.” Shabana now have 46 points with one match left, against Finlays in Kisii on November 8. In other results, Kariobangi Sharks drew 1-1 with Posta Rangers while Kakamega Homeboyz beat Busia United 2-0. Meanwhile Shabana FC club chairman Jared Nivaton is calling upon fans to turn up in large numbers to boost the player’s morale in the finals fixture. “We want to show that Gusii is ready for the return to topflight by filling the Stadium,” he said.

Samuel Montari from Strathmore University is one of the players Impala had approached but was unavailable.
