Kenya’s cost of doing business worsens

Kenya has moved down nine positions on the latest ranking by the world economic forum global competitiveness index on cost of doing business. According to the report released yesterday in Switzerland ,executives who took part in the survey which forms part of the Index calculations listed corruption as the top concern of people who wish to do business in Kenya. The report indicates that after two years of forward movement in the Index, Kenya slips nine places to 99th with regressions on three pillars in particular, goods market efficiency, financial market development and institutions. Despite the decline, financial market development remains one of Kenya’s three strongest pillars, along with innovation and labour market efficiency. Kenya’s main weakness according to the report include the macroeconomic environment, health and primary education despite a small improvement in the past few years. The report, however, indicates that Kenya is still among the top ten countries in Sub-Saharan Africa with the most competitive economies. The report is an annual assessment of the factors driving productivity and prosperity in 140 countries. According to the report, failure to embrace long-term structural reforms to boost productivity and free up entrepreneurial talent is

the second year in a row, Rwanda’s overall position of 58th reflects improvements in the financial development pillar – especially regulation of securities exchanges – and business sophistication. It scores 8thglobally for labour market efficiency, thanks to the third-highest female labour participation rate in the world, and 17th globally for the strength of its public and private institutions. However, improvements are needed in some fundamental

areas of competitiveness including infrastructure, health and higher education. South Africa tops the region for the efficiency of its financial markets, a pillar on which it ranks 12thglobally. It performs reasonably strongly on infrastructure and institutions, although corruption and security remain concerns, and needs to make progress on health and education. Gabon according to the report improved slightly to 103rd overall, Gabon’s main strength

is its macro-economic environment, which is rated among the world’s top 20 thanks to a positive budget balance and low levels of government debt, reflective of its resource-driven economy. However, this is the only pillar on which Gabon ranks in the tophalf globally, but ranks among the world’s bottom 20 on goods market efficiency, higher education and training, business sophistication and innovation.

Nairobi areas to be worst hit by El Nino revealed The Meteorological Department has mapped out areas in Nairobi that will be worst affected by the El-Nino rains expected from next week. Information from the department indicates there will be landslides in Mathare, Dagoretti, Kibra and River Banks within slum areas during the rains. Other areas include Uhuru Highway, Mombasa Road, South C, Lang’ata Road (around T-Mall), Ngong River, Nairobi River (around Mathare area), Roysambu, Garden Estate, Marumi Estate, the Central Business District (CBD), Donholm Estate, Umoja 1, Komarock, Thika Road, Landhies Road and Jogoo Road will experience floodlights. The weatherman has also warned of storms and strong winds to be experienced in areas on Chiromo Road, Limuru Road, Karura Forest, Kilimani, Lavington, Karen and parts of Eastlands. “Nairobi residents are hereby informed that due to the evolving El-Nino conditions, above normal rainfall is expected during this short rains season (October, Novernmebr and December), consequently leading to severe flashfloods”, reads part of the statement. Motorists and pedestrians have been warned against poor visibility and slippery roads as a result of the

heavy rains. The department also urged Nairobi residents to unblock household and storm drainage systems, ensure proper waste disposal-particularly solid waste and reinforce and repair weak and damaged structures and houses to minimise the impact of the expected flashfloods. Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero in a statement yesterday said his administration has put in place measures to mitigate the impact of the impending El Nino. He said response and emergency teams have been established in all sub-counties within the City to undertake various activities to ensure minimal damage to property and risks during this period. He appealed to other stakeholders to come on board, citing the expected magnitude of the rains and the risks that could come with it. “Let us unite to save lives and property during the impending El Nino phenomenon,” said Kidero. Earlier, the county government announced it would deploy 400 youth in South C area to unclog blocked drainage in preparation of the rains. Scientists say the waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean are heating up, building towards a strong El Nino event that could rival the

intensity of the record 1997 event that wreaked weather-related havoc across the globe, from mudslides in California to fires in Australia. According to the latest forecast released today by the National

Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Centre, this year’s El Nino is “significant and strengthening.” “There is greater than 90 per cent

chance that the rains could continue through Northern Hemisphere winter 2015-16, and around an 85 per cent chance it will last into early spring 2016,” the NOAA said in a statement.

Strike attracts global attention The ongoing teachers’ strike has now attracted the attention of the world after an international union representing 30 million education workers wrote to President Uhuru Kenyatta urging him to meet the teachers’ salary demands. Two unions, Education International (EI) and the Danish Union of Teachers have voiced their solidarity with the striking teachers, saying they rightly deserved a pay rise. In a letter dated September 28, Brussels-based EI urged President Uhuru to engage in a meaningful dialogue with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) to end the strike. The body has also urged Uhuru to respect the fundamental rights and freedoms of teachers in accordance with international standards in relation to collective bargaining.

Educational International has also urged the government to desist from threatening teachers because of their appeal for a fair salary increase. The agency has expressed optimism that the government will act swiftly and address the demands of teachers so that they can resume duties. “We understand that the Supreme Court ruled in favour of teachers to have a 50-60 per cent pay rise. However, it is alarming that Kenya’s government has flatly refused to honour the ruling,” read part of the letter by the President of the Danish Union of Teachers Anders Bondo Christensen. These developments come in the wake of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) decision to hire 70,000 teachers on a three-month contract as the teachers strike continues. TSC has said it intends to recruit 50,000 primary and 20,000 secondary school

teachers on a three-month contract. The 70,000 teachers will join around 45,000 others who are teaching. The commission has 288,000

teachers on its payroll. Last Friday, students in public schools got a short-lived reprieve when Employment and Labour Court Judge

Nelson Abuodha directed the two unions to suspend the strike for 90 days and meet TSC for talks. Abuodha asked the teachers to consider

the interests of the children in public schools and go back to class immediately. Both Knut and Kuppet are yet to call off the strike to date.

EACC rAisEs AlArm ovEr rising CAsEs of grAft in thE CountiEs The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has expressed concerns over high levels of corruption in most counties. EACC deputy chief executive Michael Mubea said the anti-graft agency had completed investigations into 15 counties over corruption. “We are probing corruption in all the counties. So far we have finalised investigations into 15 counties and charged people in court,” said Mubea. Though corruption took place in almost all departments of the county offices, Mubea singled out procurement processes as the major hotspot where wastage and misuse of public money occur. He said in most graft cases,

procurement officers are responsible for the loss of colossal amounts of public money and resources. “During procurement processes a lot of money is lost and quite a number of officers from the department have been arraigned in court,” he said. Mubea appealed to procurement officers across the country to be cautious in handling public resources. He advised the officers to ensure all procurement regulations and laws are observed at all levels. Nepotism in giving of tenders and employment at the county level was also a major cause of worry according to Mubea. He said EACC is still investigating

other counties including Bungoma county which hit the headlines after controversial purchase of wheelbarrows at Sh109, 320 per piece. Mubea was speaking after he received a petition from Bungoma residents who raised concerns over the wheelbarrow scandal. Kennedy Orunga, Bungoma, residents who presented the petition to Mubea read out a stream of allegations of misuse of public resources, abuse of office, nepotism and highhandedness by top county officials. According to him, the wheelbarrow scam was ‘just a tip of the iceberg.’ “Bungoma is home to offices

manned by spouses, their children and even grandchildren. A chief officer has his wife as his secretary and his sons working in as auditors in the same department with primary school dropouts being preferred to graduates even in cases where minimum requirements are clear,” he said. Levels of anger were clear on the faces of the residents who displayed placards condemning corruption and even pushed a brand-new blue wheelbarrow to the EACC offices at the Integrity Centre. They complained that contracts and tenders were awarded only to specific people and in complete violation of the Public Procurement and Disposal Act that emphasises on

competitive outsourcing. The demonstrators appealed to EACC and the Senate to okay a thorough audit of entire procurement of county projects, expenditures and among others suppliers and contractors. “Lifestyle audit of all heads of departments, directors, chief officers, advisers and the governor should all be audited,” they appealed. They also raised eyebrows over Sh16 million used to establish a SMS platform for the county. “The SMS platform is not even working. Uasin Gishu has done the platform at just Sh400, 000. What is the difference between these two platforms,’ they wondered.

Petitioners seek to ouster Muthama as senator for ‘bullying governor’ Two residents yesterday moved to court seeking the ouster of Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama for allegedly “bullying” Governor Alfred. In their plea, the petitioners now want the embattled senator declared unfit to hold public office. They said some remarks attributed to the senator by the media “could spark violence in Machakos county” if the order sought is not granted. “Muthama violated Chapter Six of the Constitution (leadership and integrity) therfore his seat should be declared vacant. He has continuously misled the public especially the county’s development matters,” Manthi Musyok and Peter Joseph Mutiso said through lawyer Fred Nyamu. They said while addressing a public rally in the county, Muthama “falsely” said Mutua had commissioned an incomplete borehole project and called for his prosecution for misuse of public funds under the guise of undertaking development. “He also alleged that the

Bahati church wrangles deepen An internal wrangle rocking the AIPCA church deepened yesterday after a member sued the Archbishop for presiding a wedding while under suspension. Embattled archbishop Amos Kabuthu of the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa is however not new to contempt proceedings having been found guilty and convicted before for disobeying a court order that barred him from ordaining the church’s clergy. There is also a pending sentence in a separate contempt case of which he has offered a written apology, a trial court was told on Wednesday. Lawyer Kirimi David who is seeking a fresh contempt conviction against the bishop on behalf of Mr Simon Peter Mwangi told trial court judge Roslyn Aburili that the bishop conducted a wedding on August 15 at the AIPCA Rongai in sheer disregard of an order that had reaffirmed his supension and stripped him of his capacity to run the church’s affairs pending a hearing and determination of a leadrship dispute in the church. Mr Kabuthu’s suspension as the

archbishop was reaffirmed on August 11 after a court set aside orders that had temporarily reinstated him on July 31. “In blatant disobedience and total disregard of the said court order he proceeded to conduct a marriage ceremony dressed in full regalia as the Arch Bishop of the church,” the lawyer charged and asked the court to meet out an appropriate penalty. He said that the bishop has on several occasions been convicted of contempt orders and was apprehensive that “he may not obey any orders after he publicly stated that he will not be cowed by the judiciary.” “He is a habitual contemnor who is awaiting sentencing in a Petition number 127/2014 of which he has even offered an apology in writing,” the lawyer submitted. The lawyer also sought, and was granted, the courts protection against hostile supporters of the bishop who jammed the courtroom and had allegedly “intimidated” Mr Mwangi by locking him up in one of the courtroom after a previous hearing and had also attempted to shout him down during his submissions.

“You have submitted to the authority of this court and I call upon you and warn you to respect these proceedings,” Judge Aburili said, adding that in future she may be forced to bar the “supporters” from attending the case and if need be, punish them for contempt. The court heard that despite being personally served with the reaffirmed suspension order, replete with a penal notice on August 12 at 9.37 am at Bahati AIPCA Cathedral, and a similar one served to his lawyer Mr Thomas Kuria, he went ahead to officiate the wedding three days later . However, the Archbishop’s lawyer submitted that his client was “unaware” of the existence of the court order. “There was no service of order until August 17 when the OCS Jogoo Road police station went to ask the Archbishop if he was aware of an order,” Mr Kuria submitted. He said the controversial wedding which the contempt proceedings arose from was conducted while the Archbishop was unaware that his suspension had been reaffirmed. A ruling will be made on November 23.

out at the governor over the purchase of tractors for the county government, claiming the procurement was fictitious and that seeds

distributed to the farmers never germinated. “The first respondent has on numerous occasions used words which are misleading to the public and are only meant to abuse and bully Mutua,” they say in the suit papers. Governor Mutua officiated the commissioning of a borehole at the Katine HGM school in Machakos county on July 29. The petitioners pray that Muthama and a local vernacular radio station be restrained from making further inflammatory remarks which may create disharmony. They have also named in the Senate Speaker Ekwe Ethuro and the county government of Machakos as respondents in the suit. “Unless the orders herein are granted the conduct of the respondent(s) may result in violence,” the petitioners state. The Senate and the county government have, however objected the suit, saying the court has no jurisdiction to adjudicate the matter. A determination will be made on October 28 before the main suit is tackled.

RUSSIA, US MILITARY TO TALK ON SYRIA The US and Russian military will hold talks “as soon as possible” to avoid clashing in Syria, the countries’ top diplomats say. Russian defence officials say their aircraft carried out about 20 missions against the so-called Islamic State group (IS) on Wednesday. But the US expressed fears the targets were non-IS opponents of Russia’s ally, Syrian President Bashar alAssad. The US is targeting IS with air strikes in both Syria and Iraq. Nato said there had been little co-ordination by Russia with US-led forces against IS, also known as Isil. The US says it was informed of Wednesday’s air strikes only an hour before they took place. The New York Times and

the Wall Street Journal report that the Russian strikes targeted USbacked rebels, including some trained by the CIA. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said there was a need to “establish channels of communication to avoid any unintended incidents”. His US counterpart, John Kerry, said talks will be held “as soon as possible,” maybe as early as Thursday. Mr Kerry added: “It’s one thing to be targeting Isil, but the concern, obviously, is that this is not what was happening.” France’s Defence Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, told French MPs: “Curiously, they didn’t hit Islamic State. I will let you draw a certain number of conclusions

yourselves.” US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter said Russia’s approach was “tantamount to pouring gasoline on the fire” and “doomed to fail” because of the breadth of Syrian opposition to Mr Assad. Syria’s civil war has raged for four years, with an array of armed groups fighting to overthrow the government. The US and its allies have insisted that President Assad should leave office, while Russia has backed him remaining in power. The Russian defence ministry said the country’s air force had targeted IS military equipment, communication facilities, arms depots, ammunition and fuel supplies - and did not hit civilian infrastructure or areas nearby.

Parcel bomb kills seven in Southern China

WHO in support of ‘treat all’ HIV drug programme

At least seven people have been killed and 51 others injured after multiple blasts in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, local media said. Initial investigations suggest the explosions were caused by 17 parcel bombs in the seat of Liucheng county, China state-run Xinhua news agency said. Emergency services rushed to the scenes of the blasts that caused severe damage to buildings and vehicles. Police named a 33-year-old man from Liucheng Tai Po town as a suspect in the explosions, but said investigations are ongoing, Xinhua reported. The People’s Daily, a national newspaper, said the suspect paid couriers to deliver the letter bombs across Liucheng. A further 60 suspicious parcels had been identified and bomb disposal units were “on their way.” Today, Xinhua reported another explosion at a residential building at around 8 am. There were no initial reports of casualties. It added there had been separate explosions at locations including a shopping mall, prison, hospital, public service dormitories and vegetable market.

Afghan forces retake control of Kunduz city After days of heavy fighting, the Afghan government says its forces have retaken the major city of Kunduz from Taliban militants. The country’s specia forces seized control of the city in an operation that began late yesterday and were still clearing out Taliban fighters from some areas early today, said Sayed Sarwar Hussaini, a spokesman for the Kunduz police chief. US military helped the Afghan forces during the operation through advisers on the ground and by conducting airstrikes, he said. Sediq Sediqqi, an Afghan Interior ministry spokesman, said on Twitter that Taliban insurgents suffered heavy casualties in the fighting. Other government officials issued statements congratulating the security forces.

The fighting between Christian and Muslim Seleka groups has left at least 38 people dead and forced more than 10,000 to flee.

LIGHT MOMENT: President Uhuru Kenyatta with a HIV positive child at the KICC last year when he launched an ARV program to school going children living with the virus. WHO has backed putting all HIV positive people in medication

Everyone who has HIV should be offered antiretroviral (ARVs) drugs as soon as possible after diagnosis, the World Health Organisation says. This latest policy removes previous limits suggesting patients wait until the disease progresses. The WHO has also recommended people at risk of HIV be given the drugs to help prevent the infection taking hold. UNAIDS said these changes could help avert 21 million AIDSrelated deaths and 28 million new infections by 2030. The recommendations increase the number of people with HIV eligible for antiretroviral drugs from 28 million to 37 million across the world. But the challenge globally will be making sure everyone has access to them and the funds are in place to pay for such a huge extension in treatment. Only 15m people currently get the drugs. The drug, antiretroviral therapy (ART) is a combination of medicines used to treat HIV. It is not a cure, but can control the virus so that patients can live a longer, healthier life to reducing the risk of transmitting HIV to others. It also prevents HIV from

multiplying, reducing the amount of the virus in the body. Having less HIV in the body gives the immune system a chance to recover and fight off infections and cancers. By reducing the amount of HIV, the medicines also reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to others. Mark Dybul, Executive Director of the Global Fund, a privatepublic initiative which is one of the biggest funders of HIV research and treatment, said: “The recommendations are critically important to moving us towards the fast-track treatment and prevention goals.” Michel Sidibe, of UNAIDS, added: “Everybody living with HIV has the right to life-saving treatment. The new guidelines are a very important steps towards ensuring that all people living with HIV have immediate access to antiretroviral treatment.” The WHO announcement comes after extensive research into the issue. A US National Institutes of Health study due to run until 2016 was stopped early after an interim analysis found giving treatment straight after diagnosis cut deaths and complications, such as kidney or liver disease by half.

South Africa to compensate Marikana massacre families South Africa’s government says it will pay compensation to the families of mineworkers killed during a wage dispute in Marikana in 2012. The details of the payments will be determined by an independent panel led by a judge, President Jacob Zuma said. Police shot dead 34 miners at the Lonmin platinum mine, claiming they were acting in self-defence. The shooting was the most deadly police incident since the end of apartheid in 1994, and shocked the nation. The families’ lawyers have

reportedly welcomed the president’s announcement. “We welcome that process. In fact, that gesture was expected a long time ago by families who had lost hope,” the Sowetan newspaper quotes lawyer Tsepiso Ramphele as saying. They have already filed suits claiming compensation for loss of income and medical costs. Many of the mineworkers who died were sole bread-winners and the compensation will be a welcome relief for their families, correspondents say. Opposition parties argue that the matter

should be brought to parliament so they can weigh in on what a fair settlement would be. In the days before the shooting, 10 other people died at the site, including non-striking miners, security guards and two police officers who were hacked to death. An enquiry set up by President Zuma sat for two years and looked at the roles played by the police, the management of the platinum mine, Lonmin, the unions and government. The Farlam Commission found that the police had a “defective” plan to break up the strike and

concluded they were wrong to proceed with it. It recommended a criminal investigation into police over the deaths but no-one has been charged or held responsible for the killings. Numerous calls have been made for police commissioner Riah Phiyega to be sacked over the incident. The enquiry criticised both the mining unions and Lonmin for not doing enough to resolve the dispute in the early days of the protests. There has been no reaction from Lonmin yet on the government’s move.

Buhari slams ‘unruly Nigerians’ Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians to stop their “unruly behaviour” to achieve progress. In an address of the nation to mark 55 years of independence from British rule, he said Nigerians would have to “face squarely” the economic crisis caused by the sharp fall in oil prices. “It would require “prudent housekeeping”, and tackling corruption in the oil

sector,” said Mr Buhari. It was his first address to the nation since ascending to power in May. “We must change our unruly behaviour in schools, hospitals, market places, motor parks, on the roads, in homes and offices,” he said. “To bring about change, we must change ourselves by being law-abiding citizens,” he added. Buhari strongly defended his failure

to appoint a Cabinet some four months after taking office, saying he did not want to act in a “haphazard” way. “Anyway, the wait is over. The first set of names for ministerial nominees for confirmation has been sent to the Senate,” he said. The list has not yet been made public. Buhari is the first Nigerian to become president after defeating the incumbent in elections.

Brand Kenya pushes for domestic tourism at International Trade Fair

KTB partners with Dubai as tourists numbers almost double The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB ) has partnered with the Dubai Cooperation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing a collaboration aimed at scaling traffic from Dubai to Kenya and vice versa. KTB Marketing Manager Fatma Bashir in confirmed that the number of visitors from UAE has been on the increase, “We have seen tremendous growth in the past couple of the years and we are and we are keen to do more to continue growing the numbers,” she said. According to data by KTB, the country received about 35,000 visitors from the UAE between January and August 2015 compared to 18,500 visitors the same period last year. The launch of ‘Chose Kenya’ campaign in the UAE among other strategies contributed to the growth. According to KTB PR Manager Ms Wausi Walya, Kenya’s image has improved immensely through various endorsements in various global platforms in the recent past. “We can confidently confirm from the interactions that KTB has had in Ghana, Nigeria and Dubai that Kenya is still top on many visitors bucket list and a favourite for repeat visitors.” She said.

INDUSTRY Kenya Bankers Association (KBA), the umbrella body of the banking industry, has partnered with the Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority (UFAA), to run a public awareness campaign during the month of October as the financial sector prepares for the first year of formal reporting to the recentlylaunched sector regulator. The “Unclaimed Financial Assets (UFAA) Awareness Month”

The national body, Brand Kenya— responsible for identifying and refining key attributes contributing positively to the image and reputation of the nation—is using the Nairobi International Trade Fair as an opportunity to promote and encourage domestic tourism. The move is aimed at revitalizing the sector - which has witnessed an improvement in recent months - while highlighting employment and investment opportunities within the industry. According to a report by research group, Euromonitor domestic tourism value sales will grow by 4 per cent annually over the coming years. “There is a great opportunity for further growth if county

governments improve the management of sites which were previously managed by the Kenya Tourism Board and the central government,” said the Euromonitor report. It further states that the main threats to domestic tourism will remain to be low incomes and the poor development of local attractions if county governments fail to fulfill their development plans. The Brand Kenya Board lauded the International Trade Fair as a platform that enhances the Kenya brand by showcasing the nation’s potential in agriculture, manufacturing, service industry and many other sectors of the economy.

Meru County to focus on development and job creation

Martinwambora.

Embu County has seen an upsurge in the implementation of its development projects, surpassing a host of other localities across the country. County Governor, Martin Nyaga Wambora said that as the region’s government focuses its energies on improving the living standards of its residents, his administration is also seeking to create employment opportunities in Embu. The County government has made major strides in terms of infrastructure development, starting with the rehabilitation of 273 roads and the completion of 8 bridges. Now the administration is setting up funds that aim to not only create jobs, but also support innovation and entrepreneurship. “We have facilitated the issuance of loans through a joint loan board

worth Sh9 million to over 200 business men,” the Governor said during a recent address. “We have conducted market needs assessment and mapping for all market in Embu County so as to come up with a comprehensive plan on their repairs, construction and upgrading,” he added. The Governor noted that his administration would work towards boosting agricultural production in the County. The sector currently provides employment to 85 per cent of Embu’s rural population. Governor Wambora has since promised to support the sector, adding that his administration is currently setting up a value chain for some of the region’s most financially-viable crops, including coffee, bananas, mangoes, passion fruits and macadamia nuts.

KBA, UFAA agree to raise awareness on assets campaign will target financial institutions, including banks, microfinance institutions, stock brokers, as well as the other institutions such as large corporations, schools, courts, utility companies and other holders of unclaimed or unpaid cash, cheques, interest, wages and other classes of financial assets. Speaking during the launch of the campaign, UFAA CEO Mrs. Kellen

Kariuki, MBS, noted the importance of the partnership in facilitating the re-unification of customers with their assets. “The primary responsibility of assets reunification is by holders themselves. UFAA assume that role on whatever else remain unclaimed. This initiative on education and awareness between UFAA and holding institutions will go a long way in enhancing reunification

rate,” she said. According to Mr Habil Olaka, Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Bankers Association banks are at the forefront of implementing new requirements in claiming assests. “We expect the industry will improve in implementation now that there are formal reporting structures and as the regulations which streamline the process are finalised,” he said.

Owners of unclaimed assets will also be educated on how to contact the Authority to establish if the regulator has their funds; and the procedures for filing a claim. The Unclaimed Financial Assets Act of 2011 set different periods within which assets can be declared dormant and hence unclaimed; the periods range from two years for cheques to seven years for bank accounts.

BIZ BRIEFS Economic growth remains slow, weather favors yields

Favourable weather conditions experienced over the past year has boosted the country’s agricultural sector, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has said. However, the statistics office has warned that Kenya’s economic growth, which is responsible for increased incomes, improved living standards and the rise of the country’s middle class, has remained somewhat slow. “During the review period, the country experienced good rains that led to improved agricultural activities despite suppressed demand of key agricultural exports,” the Bureau said in a recent statement Kenya’s economic growth slowed to 5.5 per cent in the second quarter of this year as manufacturing, construction and financial services weakened, the Bureau said on Wednesday.

The Nano-Crystal 65’’ SUHD TV The Kenyan electronic consumer seeks beauty and purpose! Samsung is satisfying consumers with outstanding design and functionality within the home space. Samsung Electronics has been the world’s number one TV brand by market share for a good few years now, but its dominance is coming under threat from cross-town arch-rival LG’s OLED offerings that are capable of delivering true blacks due to their self-

emissive characteristic, as well as low-cost 4K TVs from China at the other end of the scale. In a bid to stave off stiff competition and retain its leadership position in the global television market, the South Korean manufacturer announced several key strategic initiatives at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2015 in Las Vegas April. Samsung’s 2015 top-tier JS9500 series features a curved screen, native 10-bit LCD panel, direct-

Finished in tasteful brushed metallic silver, the relatively slim bezel on the Samsung JS9500 chamfers elegantly inwards towards the screen such that the LCD panel sits recessed from the frame, thus heightening the sense of depth. At a time when Kenya is losing millions of shillings due to widespread cases of malaria, researchers have identified a gene that protects some African children from getting the disease. The scientists say their discovery will boost the fight against a disease that kills around half a million children a year. Excluding the expenses associated with productivity loss, malaria costs Kenya roughly h1 billion every year, according to a study published in 2013. Now the study, which analysed data from Kenya, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Malawi, Mali and Gambia and Tanzania, hopes to save both lives and revenue. The research, which was conducted by MalariaGEN, an international network of scientists largely funded by the Wellcome Trust, compared the DNA of 5,633 children with severe malaria with the DNA of 5,919 children without severe malaria, Reuters reports.

AdBlock Plus to allow some online ads to pass through its filter

AdBlock Plus, the internet’s most popular advert-blocking plug-in, will soon allow some online advertisements to bypass its security and therefore frustrate the users of the software. Eyeo, the company behind AdBlock Plus, has announced plans to set up an independent board that will inspect which ads it allows to circumvent its technology the BBC reports. Many sites generate their revenue from advertisements and AdBlock Plus discourages marketers from paying for such services. “They’re commercial enterprises and they want to make as much money as they can,” said Ian Maude a market analyst from the research firm, Enders Analysis. The ad blocking software is popular across the globe, including countries like Kenya and South Africa where a large number of the population prefers to browse their favourite sites ad-free. “I sympathise with the ad-blockers and internet users to the extent that you are now seeing vast volumes of data being gathered about people’s behaviour without their express permission.” He said.

TRADE SUCCESS: Foreign Affairs CS Amb. Amina Mohammed at the WTO Public Forum in Geneva. She said Africa needs support of WTO to deepen the reform agenda & sustain the transformation process

The 10th Ministerial Conference (MC10) slated for Nairobi in December is a top priority for Kenyan Government and must succeed, Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed has said. Addressing the WTO Public Forum in Geneva, CS Amina assured participants that the success of the 10th Ministerial Conference was a top. Amina has urged the 161 WTO Member states to work hard adding that the conference offers a unique opportunity to make a contribution for the development of the whole world. “We should all do our part in ensuring that Nairobi is a success and use MC10 to take a step in the right direction in strengthening the multilateral trading system,” added the CS. The CS further said that Kenya is hosting MC10 on behalf of Africa because it believes in the multilateral trading system and expressed confidence that

concrete outcomes, agreed by all, will have a farreaching effect, regardless of the economic size and geographic location of WTO Members. “Trade works -- if we choose to make it work. If we wish to make trade work for development and for inclusive and sustainable growth, the responsibility to do so lies with us, with each and every one of us,” she said. The Cabinet Secretary at the same time urged WTO Member states to ratify the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) which aims to cut barriers to the free flow of goods by streamlining customs procedures. “In times of uncertainty and worrying economic fluctuations, which are felt by more and more people around the world, the WTO needs to remain strong and effective in performing its duty as the guardian of the multilateral trading system,” she concluded.

Boost as Kenya, Australia ink bilateral trade treaty Kenya and Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding in a bid to increase opportunities for bilateral business and strengthen their relationship. According to Anna Dorney from the Australian High Commission, the country is the 12th largest economy in the world with the 5th highest GDP per capita. “Australia is a trading nation. Our trade with the world is equivalent to 42 per cent of our GDP. We are thus focused on increasing our trade as increased trade is

good for both our countries. It strengthens old relationships and builds new ones.” She said. Last year official figures reported a total of 121 million Australian dollars (about Ksh8.9 billion) in merchandise trade and a further 137 million Australian dollars ( Ksh10 billion) in service trade with two way investments totaling around 60 million Australian dollars (about Ksh 4.4 billion). Australia’s investment in Africa is increasing including interests in

mining, oil and gas, agriculture and aquaculture. According to statistics there are currently over 200 Australian mining companies operating across Africa with investments worth more than USD 40 billion. Kenya’s biggest mine, and Australia’s biggest investment in Kenya is the USD 300 million base titanium minerals sand project in Kwale that continues to boost the mining industry’s income as well as creating jobs for the locals.

Speaking at the same event, the Chairman of the Economic Diplomacy Committee, KNNCI Mr. James Mureu noted that Kenya is stable and safe for business and welcomed Australia and the world to invest in Kenya. “We want to ensure that as Kenya and Australia celebrate 50 years, this agreement between our chambers will create our path to formalize and continue our relationship,” said Mr. Stephen Kuria Chairman of the Kenya Australia Chamber of Commerce.

he invention of internet technology has brought about dramatic revolution in the social sphere, especially due to creation of social interaction sites such as Facebook and Twitter, together with the very popular online dating apps and sites integrated into the internet. For every action there must be a reaction and even though social interaction sites and apps have helped many find love from all over the world, drama, chaos and tragedy surround these sites especially due to the anonymity of individuals using the sites. While the western world’s biggest online dating crisis at present is the hacking of the Ashley Madison cheaters dating site and the comical association of Tinder, a dating app, to the spread of STDs by reproductive health specialists, our online dating predicament is unfortunately not as humorous. While not many Kenyans are on dating sites like Ashley Madison, Plenty of Fish and Match.com, Facebook has been quite resourceful in matters love with a few moving Facebook love story and several grotesque ones as well. This week, chilling details emerged about a teenage girl who committed suicide after her foreign lover who she apparently met through Facebook flew into the country to meet her, only for her to end up assaulted multiply and blackmailed by the man identified as Marco Ritz. According to media reports, the man threatened to circulate the girl’s nude photos online and defame her as a prostitute. When the poor girl couldn’t take the pressure and fear anymore, she opted to end her life, leaving behind a suicide note detailing her horrific encounter. Although a lot of controversy has surfaced regarding the actuality of the story after someone claimed ownership of the photo used, the media company that broke the story maintains that the tragedy did happen, even publishing the girl’s alleged suicide note. Mercy’s case is however, not the first of its kind in the country. Earlier this year, a disturbing video made rounds

on the internet showing a Kenyan lady named Laura Imali being assaulted by two white men and being forced into lewd acts. Apparently, she had met one of the men online and she had later moved to the US to be with him. Last year, a University of Nairobi student named Ashley Agumbi got into a romantic involvement with a Briton she had met via Facebook. A while later, the man flew into the country to meet her but her angel turned into a devil who assaulted her and flushed her diabetes drugs down the toilet. Ashley passed away later from diabetic complications mainly hypertension and respiratory failure. These cases go to show that although we are by now well-schooled on how to avoid falling prey to financial fraudsters online, we are still naïve about the social media dating fad and the looming danger of cyber bullying and murder that lurks in the shadows of looking for love online.

or advertisers, having to deal with the new media generation has proved an unending nightmare and as technology evolves, the advertising field gets into more and more trouble due to the immense difficulty to reach and impact the 18-34 year old age group who are the most coveted yet elusive demographic group. The new media generation possess all the traits that advertisers hate; they have short attention spans, loathe any form of advertisement and for them, traditional media is an ancient concept. Technical gadgets, internet, game and lifestyle apps are what get the millennials ticking. This means that the entire advertising sector has had to employ a full system reboot in order to keep up with these preference shifts among this crucial age group which is coveted mainly because they are in the opinion shaping stage of life; here is where they decide which brands to pledge their lifetime loyalty to. Even when watching prime time shows at home, you will notice that the millennials rarely look up from

their favorite gadget, the mobile phone, which means adverts that were originally slated to air during prime time easily pass by unviewed. In fact, the youth would rather spend time alone in their rooms in the company of their phones, computers and tablets, which are increasingly embracing use of graphics such as emoji and memes to replace word communication, indeed, a picture is worth a thousand words more so in the 21st century. You will often hear millennials joking amongst themselves about how eagerly they wait for the 5 seconds You Tube skip-ad restriction to expire, or how they immediately close any page redirected to adverts since the banners and pop ups only consume their ‘mbs’. So what are advertisers doing to ensure they stay afloat especially since popular apps such as Facebook and WhatsApp are also under pressure to maintain advertisementfree services? Internationally, advertisers have gone the graphically creative way, such as Domino Pizza fast food chain which receives pizza

Petra

orders via pizza emoji texts and tweets while health businesses advertise through fitness tracking apps. Such tactics are yet to be implemented locally, although there have been notable efforts by brands to reach the millennial age group through app and events sponsorships. For our local millennials, the most viable advertising strategy especially for telecommunication products and services is offering incentives in the form of (or embedded in) what they desire most: mobile phones, computers, games and cool applications. Speaking of apps, reports have emerged that one of the most popular social media platforms, Twitter, intends to increase its message character limit to more than the current 140 words, which has already been implemented in Twitter private messages, to allow longer posts on timelines. Knowing millennials preference for images than words though, we are pretty sure that they will only use the character limit extension to flood timelines with emoji, photos, GIFs, stickers and posters!

The students went to court seeking to stop the institution from giving the exams before students join the college. Kariuki Muchemi, who is a student at MKU argued that the Kenya school of law had breached the law since the three-year grace period that was given had not lapsed. Three thousand students from eleven universities who have filed the case through Muchemi argued that they had joined law school before the act was passed and should be allowed to join KSL without doing the exam. The students want the institution to stop administering the exam at least until the transition period ends. High court judge George Odunga directed the matter to proceed to hearing. This matter will be heard on 28th October 2015.

hat does your job entail? I mainly focus on deep social community issues and turn the negative ones to positive. I mostly deal with kids and it is fun! Currently I am running the Ficha Uchi campaign where we try our best to give school kids with torn uniform new ones. How many hours do you work in a day? I work all the time! But I get to sleep for at least 5 hours daily. What qualifications do you need for your job? Social work is about passion and focus. Was this your dream career? No. I wanted to be a priest. I have always wanted to serve the community, which I am still doing so no regrets. How did you start out? I started The Billian Foundation in 2010 to help artistes from Mathare since I grew up there but later

extended services to give a helping hand to these kids because it is my duty to serve them. What achievements have you had so far? In 2013 I was nominated for Outstanding Leadership Award in the US. It was the most humbling experience. Any challenges you have experienced so far? Working with underprivileged children is heart breaking. When communities around them are unsupportive or the governments interfere it can get very frustrating. Does your job interfere with your social life? I really don’t know if I have a social life. My work tends to bring people close to me. I am happy with the path I have chosen. What is the best part of your job? When I see the children smile because of my work, it just melts my heart.

11

Getting the opportunity to work with young guys, mostly those in university, is an amazing experience. To see so many of them volunteer and choose social work gives me hope for a better future. What is the worst part of your job? It is very demanding and there are less hours in a day, yes! I wish a day had more than 24 hours! Any advice for people who want to venture in to your line of work? Be passionate and compassionate.

Ronaldo equals Raul’s 500 CL goals record Cristiano Ronaldo equalled Raul’s all-time goals record for Real Madrid and took his career tally to 500 with two against Malmo in Sweden. The Portuguese international opened scoring in the 29th minute of the Champions’ League Group ‘A’ match, latching on to Isco’s pass before shooting past the helpless goalkeeper. The 30-yearold added a second late on with a simple finish after he was teed up by substitute Lucas Vazquez. Ronaldo’s second saw him draw level with Raul’s club total of 323 goals. “To equal this record for Real Madrid is great. I am glad to come to Sweden and score again,” he said. “The most important thing is to win. It was a tough game, Malmo were difficult, but we controlled the game and scored two goals so we are happy.” Ronaldo also scored a hat-trick in Real’s 4-0 win over Shakhtar Donetski in their opening match of the group to help them keep their 100 per cent start to the campaign. Former Spain striker Raul, now with New York Cosmos, hit 323 goals in 741 appearances for Real between 1994 and 2010.

Wada now rejects calls to ban use of thyroid World Anti-doping Agency (Wada) chiefs have rejected calls to ban elite athletes from taking thyroid medication. But UK AntiDoping said it was “disappointed” by Wada decision in the debate which was raised early this year when European 10,000m champion Jo Pavey claimed some athletes were using unethical thyroid medication to enhance performance. The drug can increase metabolism and is claimed to be a stimulant, as well as a weight-loss tool but Wada opted to leave thyroid medication off its 2016 prohibited list despite the claims. For a substance or method to be prohibited, it must meet two of three criteria: enhance performance; pose a threat to athlete health; violate the spirit of sport and the Antidoping body, still grappling with leaked information of biological passport of some of the top athletes is convinced that thyroid medication did not meet the criteria needed to ban it.

Mourinho cleared of ‘sexist’ abuse claims

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will face no disciplinary action after the Football Association FA cleared him of making discriminatory comments against former club doctor Eva Carneiro. The FA studied footage from the 2-2 draw with Swansea on August 8 after a member of the public made a complaint. Mourinho criticised Carneiro and head physio Jon Fearn for treating Eden Hazard with Chelsea remaining with only eight players in the pitch after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had been red carded. The 42-year-old had her role downgraded before leaving the club. The FA said it asked an independent academic expert in Portuguese linguistics to analyse the footage of the incident, in which Mourinho is seen making a verbal gesture. “Both the words used, as translated and analysed by the independent expert, and the video evidence, do not support the conclusion that the words were directed at any person in particular,” it added in a statement.

New route unveiled for this year’s EA Safari Rally

Next month’s Kenya Airways Safari Classic Rally slated for Mombasa will have a new route in what could be one of the world’s toughest rally. The route will have the longest single stage extending to more than 180 kilometres, almost half the total running of a current World Championship Rally. The Rally will zoom off in Mombasa, head to Malindi, Amboseli before crossing to Lake Manyara in Tanzania, to Arusha and back to Taita via Pare mountains. Drivers are currently testing their machines ahead of the event won by Kenyan Ian Duncan in the last edition held in 2013. Several Porsche 911s are under preparation for the event with the

Tuthill Porsche team not leaving anything to chance. The team recently carried out a rigorous test on rough roads in mid-Wales to keep the Porsches in good nick. Behind the wheel was team boss Richard Tuthill and the Safari Classic-specification Porsche covered over two hundred kilometres on the nearest thing that can be found in Britain to the rough roads of Kenya and Tanzania that his cars will have to tackle in a months’ time. The organisers have also tightened scrutineering procedures, with strict enforcement of period FIA homologation for all competing vehicles.

Removing previous flexibility surrounding this regulation confirms the Safari Classic as the world’s toughest rally for historic rally cars and its high standards of preparation. Set in the most beautiful part of the world with the wonderful East African people, Safari is a favourite event and the ultimate test of these incredible historic rally cars. Of the twelve 911s prepared by Tuthill Porsche, five are entered by Race4Health, the Swedish organisation linking motor sport activities with charitable organisations. Race4Health has a strong team headed by Stig Blomqvist – the man, who nearly took victory for

them in 2013, and an ex-World Rally Champion – and Richard Göransson ex-Swedish and European Touring Car Champion who made a major impression during his Safari debut two years ago. The other cars are to be driven by David von Schinkel, Roger Samuelsson and Christer Johansson. Each car is individually linked to a charity most of which have a direct link to support projects in Africa. The other Tuthill Porsche machines will be driven by Richard Jackson, Steve Troman, Joakim Roman, Gilberto Sandretto, Gerard Marcy, two times former Kenya champion Alastair Cavenagh and Arushabased industrialist Jayant Shah.

K’Ogallo now bemoan move to call off match Gor Mahia has expressed their disappointment with the postponement of their SportPesa Premier League midweek clash with Western Stima which was set for today evening. The decision comes as a precautionary measure by the government to protect the image of the country from foreign dignitaries streaming in for the ongoing Nairobi ASK show should Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards fans, known for causing trouble at the slightest provocation live to their name. This match and another fixture pitting AFC Leopards against Sofapaka which was also scheduled for today 4pm at

Nyayo National Stadium were both called off yesterday by the over-stretched police department which did not assure the two clubs of the security. Police said they would not guarantee adequate security due to the ongoing Nairobi International Show which started on Monday September 28 should the two matches go on as planned. “We are disappointed but there is nothing we can do,” Gor Maha chairman Ambrose Rachier told X-Sport. While both teams will incur huge loses, Rachier who is also the Kenya Premier League chairman empathised with Western Kenya who arrived in Nairobi

just hours before the police released the information. “As the hosting club we are clearly disappointed, but it is the visiting team that is more inconvenienced but there is nothing we can do because it is a matter of security. What is not clear tough is whether the directive will affect Friday and weekend league matches and Safari Sevens which is set to take place on Saturday and Sunday in Kasarani. The show will come to an end on Sunday. K’Ogalo who will play Sofapaka next Tuesday are looking forward to extend their unbeaten run in the league which they have already wrapped.

BELTING OUT SUPPORT: Gor Mahia faithful at a past SportPesa League match. Police have postponed a match between Gor Mahia and Western Stima over security challenges. Also affected is AFC Leopards fixtures.

Guinea coach ruled out of Kenya match after Caf four match ban Guinea-Bissau head coach Paulo Torres will not be on the technical bench when Harambee Stars visit the West Africa nation in a Africa Cup of National qualifiers in March next year. Torres was slapped with a four-match ban by The Confederation of African Football (Caf) who found him guilty of abusing match official in his side’s barren draw against Zambia last June. The ban means the Portuguese tactician will miss the rest of the qualifiers

starting with a home clash against Kenya and Congo and Zambia ties after he was found guilty of using “offensive language and insults against the referee. The ban, however, does not include the 2018 World Cup qualifiers where they will face Liberia in the first round of matches. Guinea-Bissau travel to Liberia on October 8 with the return leg five days later. Caf ’s disciplinary committee sitting

convened on September 20 also handed Entente Setif player Mourad Delhoum a six-match as well as Malian team doctor who was slapped with a one match ban. Delhoum was found guilty of spitting on Al Merreikh (Sudan) coach Diego Garzitto. El Merreikh beat Entente Setif 2-0 in Sudan last August while the doctor, Fadiougou Keita was handed a four-match ban for “physically attacking Guinea Bissau players” His ban will only cover CHAN matches.

Manchester comeback

Manchester City earned a crucial win against Borussia Monchengladbach same as neighbours Manchester United who came from a goal down to beat Wolfsburg with an identical 2-1 margin in their champions League matches last night. With Chelsea and Arsenal losing in the competition on Tuesday, eyes were on the two Manchester clubs whose performance last night were under scrutiny after people started raising issues with the competitive level of English Premier League in European competition. United were in danger of going the same route when Daniel Caligiuri finished off a six-pass move for the opener. City were also facing a similar situation in Germany before Aguero stepped forward to calmly slot in a penalty in the

dying minutes after Nicolas Otamendi cancelled the German’s Lars Itindl opening goal with a volley for an equaliser. The Argentine had opened the chart for City from a corner as City bounced back from defeat by Juventus in their opening Group D tie. City keeper Joe Hart saved a first-half penalty from Raffael, but was powerless to stop Stindl precisely side-footing from the 15 yards. City remain third in Group D, level on three points with Spanish side Sevilla, but three adrift of Juventus. The Italian champions, who won 2-1 at Etihad Stadium earlier this month, have maximum points after beating Sevilla 2-0 in Turin. Premier League leaders Manchester United earned their first

win of the Champions League group stage as they came from behind to beat Wolfsburg 2-1. Former Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata scored from the spot then set on Defender Chris Smalling for the winner to ease pressure off the chest of Luis Van Gaal after opening defeat to PSV Eindhoven. Mata flicked through for Smalling to slide in the winner. The Bundesliga side went close to an equaliser when former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner saw a close-range shot hit Wayne Rooney. All four teams in Group B are now on three points after CSKA Moscow beat United’s opening-day conquerors PSV Eindhoven in Russia.
