Kenya seeks help on MC10 meet
Kenya has asked the world’s top seven economies to provide “political guidance” for negotiations ahead of a global conference on trade that is scheduled for Nairobi in December. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed told the G7 countries that they are in a better place to offer direction especially on contentious issues of international trade. While noting that the MC10 is only two months away, the CS expressed concern that differences still persist on important issues and stressed the need to narrow the gaps in time for
Nairobi. “We must leave confrontation behind and work together respectfully and with full sensitivity for the constraints of others,” she told an informal meeting of G7 trade ministers in Istanbul, Turkey. “The G7 can, therefore, give guidance that would shape the outcome of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Ministerial Conference. As the leading economies, you have a special responsibility to make the Nairobi forum a success,” she added. G7 countries include the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Japan, Canada and Germany
while MC10 is the code name given to the tenth WTO conference to be held in Nairobi. At least 4,000 delegates from 160 member countries are expected to discuss how to resolve trade barriers during the conference. Amb. Mohamed said failure was not an option for MC10 and urged the G7 to give support to a Ministerial Declaration as the outcome from MC10 in Nairobi. The CS further said the process of drafting a possible package for Nairobi should now commence to allow adequate time for discussions and agreement ahead of the
meeting. “Two months before MC10, we should start to place substantive cards on the table, collectively,” she said. The CS said key issues in the package should include development outcomes, disciplining domestic support, environmental goods and transparency provisions. She called for inclusion of new issues in the agenda of the WTO including e-commerce, information technology and investments. The meeting with the G7 is part of a sustained campaign by Kenya’s Foreign and International Affairs
Secretary to drum up support for WTO negotiations in Geneva with a view to ensuring the success of the Ministerial Conference in Nairobi. Speaking during the meeting, the Director General of the WTO, Mr. Roberto Azevedo, said although there was lack of convergence on a variety of issues, there were some promising areas for MC10 in Nairobi. “Export competition, transparency provisions, LDC package and development outcomes are some of the areas where agreement can be reached,” he said.
Burma market to get Sh20 million facelift Nairobi City County governor, Dr Evans Kidero has unveiled a borehole and a sanitation facility in Burma market in an effort by the Nairobi City County government to invest in projects geared towards uplifting the lives of residents and traders as well as improving service delivery. “Today will go a long way in providing safe and clean drinking water to the traders and customers who frequent the market. The constant supply and flow of water through the borehole will ensure employment opportunities for many
Nairobi youths who will get an opportunity to set up car wash businesses to earn a living,” Kidero said adding “This will keep them away from crime and drugs.” The water project which was built using the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) was officially handed over to the County Government by the Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan. The Governor also stressed the need and importance of the water project by the Burma market traders. Says governor Kidero “Water shortage and lack of proper sanitation station has been

Refurbishment is expected to take two months. “These are some of the initiatives by the county government to help Burma market traders improve trading conditions and be able to attract more customers. More money will be set aside for the expansion of this market to compete with the likes of City Park Market, which is nearing completion. Phase one of the City Park market will be unveilled before the end of this year.” The governor also directed that County meat inspectors who have been accused of being lazy and who report to work late will be sent home. He directed that all County meat inspectors should report to their respective market posts by 6:00AM to enable traders open their premises early enough and have their meat inspected in good time in time for them to meet their customer needs. The governor also said that the County government will heighten the pace of clearing and unclogging blocked drainage systems around the market area to avert any crisis, loss of lives and properties when it hits.
Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia in a past function. He has announced that the government will set aside Sh337 million to eradicate malaria in the country.
Sh337 million set aside for malaria eradication The government has allocated Sh337 million this year for malaria control as part of the efforts to make the country a malaria-free nation. Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the allocation is part of the government’s commitment to achieve Vision 2030 by having a healthy and prosperous country. Speaking today during the launch of the revised Kenya Malaria Strategy 2009-2018 at in Nairobi, Macharia said although the country has made great strides in controlling the disease, there is need to cement and secure gains made to avoid slipping back. “Kenya re-affirms its
commitment to the fight against malaria by taking stock of progress made to date by recognising and adopting new strategies that will enable the country move towards malaria elimination,” said Macharia. He said through the ministry’s intervention such as capacity building for more than 30,000 health workers and the availability of efficacious malaria medicines, there has been a reduction in infant mortality rates. The mortality rates have declined from 52 to 39 per thousand and under five years mortality dropped from 74 to 52 per thousand population. “As we move towards elimination of malaria, the
ministry will invest in health system, improve surveillance and inform deployment of interventions for greater impact,” said the CS. Director of Medical Services Nicholas Muraguri said over the last five years, malaria burden has dropped significantly in most areas in the country. Statistics from the Word Health Organisation indicates that in 2013, malaria was responsible for 430,000 deaths among children less than five years in Africa. As noted by the WHO, malaria is still a major health problem in the Africa and a significant impediment to socioeconomic development.

The County Management and Disaster Unit through the Council of Governors has released emergency response numbers in the 47 counties to prepare for any eventualities ahead of the forecasted El Nino rains. Nairobi County director of meteorological Services Mary Kilavi yesterday warned city residents to be on the lookout for El Nino rains which is likely to start tomorrow with light shower all through to Saturday. The emergency response numbers for Nairobi County are;
0722491289 / 0202252430 / 0202210232 / 0728490590, and residents are advised to call in case of any eventuality. The disaster unit has been working closely with counties putting in place measures to alleviate the effects of the predicted disaster set to hit the country. Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero who spoke during the launch of the Emergency Response Numbers yesterday told city residents not to panic over the soon to start El Nino. “I want to assure the residents
of Nairobi that emergency teams are already established in all sub-counties within the city to ensure minimal damage to property and loss of life,” he said. Kidero, in a notice issued earlier, told property owners and residents some of the measures they should undertake to avert the tragedies that the expected El Nino is likely to cause. “Given the expected magnitude of the expected risks, there is need to involve and partner with all residents and property owners in ensuring maximum prepa-
Reform not an option, Boinnet tells officers Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has urged his officers to change their attitude and offer services to the people with utmost respect. He says there is need for police officers of all ranks to embrace total reforms and to be able to move with current times. To achieve this, the IG says the police service will focus on improving the relationship of officers internally, relationship with other security agencies and the citizens. “We first want our own officers to understand the changed circumstances in which we are doing policing,” he explained saying this will lead to a people-centred National Police Service. “We will also be engaging in outreach so that we can communicate to the public that we are eager to provide police services with a difference. We must be in tandem with circumstances of 21st century Kenya.” The police chief who was addressing senior officers attending a sensitization workshop on reforms said that it is the only way to win back lost confidence from the public. “The reform agenda is irreversible,” he stated. He cautioned that any police officer who has not reformed to align themselves with the new Constitution, has no place in modern day Kenya. Police officers found to have engaged in corrupt activities, the Inspector General warned will “instantly lose their jobs.” Among key issues set to be addressed include restoring public confidence through “understanding of each other. We want the public to understand what we do as we also understand what they expect from us.”
REFORMS: Police chief Joseph Boinnet speaks to jounalists yesterday at KICC.
Boinnet also wants police units to always work in harmony in fighting crime in the country noting that lack of harmonious work relations amongst senior officers is greatly hampering work in various departments of the police. “We want them (officers) to know the absolute imperative of changing the way we do policing in the country,” he stated. He noted that with the emerging security threats like terrorism, there was need for every member of the National Police Service “to work together. We want to change the way we do business.” In previous incidences where the country had been attacked by terrorists, cracks within the police service have been blamed on the loopholes often noted. This programme, he said will also help in boosting police-public relations once “a people centred police service is achieved.” Some of the issues raised during the session by senior police officers include how to engage with a public which “no longer respects the police service.” Officers also sought to know how they are supposed to act during various incidences to avoid infringing on other people’s rights. Responding to their concerns, Boinnet insisted that police have to follow the law while acting but noted such move needs to be guided by necessity, legality and accountability. He however insisted that he will not shy away from defending any officer accused wrongly of infringing on people’s right. Cases of police being attacked in the country have been on increase but the police boss says the public and the police service have to come to a common understanding. Asked about a report by the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) which accused the police of extra-judicial killings, Boinnet said he is not aware of any such executions in the country. The damning report accused the police of executing 85 people this year aone, while 181 people were killed in similar fashion last year. But Boinnet said he specifically needs to know the context in which the human rights group came to their conclusion.

Garden Estate, Marumi Estate, the Central Business District (CBD), Donholm Estate, Umoja 1, Komarock, Thika Road, Landhies Road and Jogoo Road will experience floodlights. It also warned of storms and strong winds to along Chiromo Road, Limuru Road, in Karura Forest, Kilimani, Lavington, Karen and parts of Eastlands. Last week, Nairobi Environment Executive Evans Ondieki said about 200 public schools have been identified to temporarily accommodate those who will be relocated from slums and other floodprone areas within the city. The government has since allocated Sh7 billion from its contingency fund and asked counties to do the same so as to mitigate the effects of the rains.

Escapees reveal horror side of ISIS militants in Iraq and Syria ISIS militants forced pregnant women they had sold into slavery to have abortions, according to three young Yazidis who escaped from the Islamic militants’ brutal clutches. After abducting hundreds of women and girls from their homes in Iraq’s Sinjar province last August, ISIS fighters rounded the captives up in “slave markets” where they were picked out to be used for sex. The terror group was so intent on using rape as a weapon of war that they brought in their own doctors gynaecologists - to determine which of the women they had captured were virgins. Bushra, 21, says she witnessed two doctors invasively examine girls to find out if they were already pregnant. Those found to be expecting were forced to abort their babies. “One of my friends was pregnant,” Bushra recalls. “Her child was about three months in the womb. They took her into another room. There were two doctors and they did the abortion. “Afterwards, they brought her back. I asked her what happened and how they did it. She said the doctors told her not to speak.” Bushra says the abortion left her friend bleeding heavily, and in so much pain that “she could not talk or walk.” “She was the first. After that, they took the pregnant women and put them in a separate house.” Noor, Munira and Bushra say they were abducted when fighters stormed their villages; separated from their families and spirited away to ISIS controlled regions of Iraq, they were forced into sex slavery. The refugee camps of Dohuk are filled with stories like theirs, of women and girls bought and sold, given as gifts, or bartered for weapons.
Bushra says she was living a “normal ... interesting ... good life,” until ISIS arrived in Sinjar and tore her away from everything she knew. “They told us, ‘Give up your family, give up that you are Yazidi -- you are now Muslims. We are going to marry you; each fighter will have one of you.’” Lined up for “inspection,” Munira, 16, says the militants examined the “belly, teeth, breasts” of her and the other captives before choosing who they wanted as a “wife.” “If the girl said, ‘I don’t want to come with you,’ or ‘I don’t want to marry you, they would take [her] by force,” remembers Noor, 22. “There was no other choice. “One man picked me. He was old, ugly and fat. I was so scared. There were some other ISIS fighters so I begged one of them, ‘Please, take me. Take me anywhere and marry me, if you want, but take me away from this one.’ So he did.” Noor says that while she wasn’t forced to have sex with him immediately, two days later the fighter who had chosen her returned from the front line. “He showed me a letter and said ‘This shows any captured women will become Muslim if 10 ISIS fighters rape her.’” She says he raped her, before giving her to his friends: “I was passed on to 11 others.” Each one raped her, she says. The Yazidis, a small Iraqi minority who believe in a single god who created the Earth and left it in the care of a peacock angel, have been subjected to large-scale persecution by ISIS, which accuses them of devil worship. ISIS claims the Quran justifies

taking non-Muslim women and girls captive, and permits their rape -- a claim vociferously denied by Islamic scholars. Munira, whose arm bears a homemade tattoo of her father’s name, inked into her skin with a sewing needle as she waited to be “sold,” fidgets next to Noor as she tells CNN her story. “I was given as a prize to another ISIS fighter. Twice,” she says. “The second time, I was traded for another girl.” Traumatised by everything she had seen, Bushra found a bottle of pills and swallowed them all, hoping to end her life rather than become a victim of rape, but she survived. “I collapsed and didn’t die,” she says.
“They took me to the hospital and in the hospital I woke up.” Once she recovered from the suicide attempt, she too was raped. She was not the only one to try to kill herself -- the women say they knew others who succeeded in taking their own lives, but that their captors were determined to keep them alive if they could. “One day, there were 14 girls with me,” says Bushra. “They tried to kill themselves by drinking rat poison, but (ISIS) took them to the hospital and cleaned their stomachs. “They told us: ‘We will not let you die so easy.’” As hard as it may be to believe, Noor, Munira and Bushra (their names
have been changed, to protect their identities) are the lucky ones: they escaped, and made it to the refugee camps. Now safe, they have been bravely telling their story. They recently travelled to the UK with the AMAR Foundation, to warn British schoolchildren of the dangers posed by radicalisation. The three women have been offered asylum in the West and will be relocating to start new lives overseas soon. But hundreds more Yazidi women remain enslaved. The trio say they want to reveal the truth about ISIS and, they hope, to help those they left behind.
EU launches anti-smuggler operation
MIGRANT CRISIS: European UNion has launched a new operation to intercept people smuggler in the Mediterranean.
The EU is beginning a new operation in the southern Mediterranean to intercept boats smuggling migrants. Under Operation Sophia, naval vessels will be able to board, search, seize and divert vessels suspected of being used for human smuggling. Until now, the EU has focused on surveillance and rescue operations. So far this year, more than 130,000 migrants and refugees have crossed to Europe from the north African coast. More than 2,700 have drowned. The migrant crisis is expected to be one of the issues raised when German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande make a rare joint address to the European Parliament in
Strasbourg on Wednesday. The only previous such address was in 1989 with then French President Francois Mitterrand and the German leader Helmut Kohl. The huge numbers of migrants reaching Europe have led to a crisis within the EU, with member states at odds on how to deal with the influx. The deadliest voyages are from Libya to Italy, although more migrants are now taking the Turkey-Greece route. The EU launched the first phase of its operation, called EUNavfor Med, in June, using naval surveillance to detect smugglers’ boats and monitor smuggling patterns from Libya towards Italy and Malta. Operation Sophia -
the second phase - has been named after a baby born on an EU ship that rescued her mother off the coast of Libya in August. From its headquarters in Rome, the operation’s commander, Rear Adm Enrico Credendino, will oversee several EU warships in the Mediterranean, including the British frigate HMS Richmond. His deputy, Rear Adm Herve Blejean told the BBC that six ships were being used “to start to dismantle this business model by trying to apprehend some suspected smugglers”. Adm Blejean said he hoped four more vessels would soon join the operation, staffed with professionals who were ready to deal with
any threats or resistance they might encounter. A senior migration expert has however warned that the EU operation in the Mediterranean will fail unless the bloc also fights criminal gangs in Europe. Eugenio Ambrosi, of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), said the “transnational criminal rings of traffickers are the same as those involved in weapons and drugs”. “The boats are not the reason for the smuggling,” Mr Ambrosi said, adding that if efforts are just focused on the boats, “the nucleus of the criminals remains untouched”. It is estimated that TPP will see more than 18,000 tariffs on American products reduced to zero.

Investors now turn to expos as ideal platform to sell property
Investors in the property industry are now shifting to exhibition as preferred marketing channels to reach potential buyers. Speaking when he unveiled the 22nd edition of Kenya homes Expo, Mentor Holdings chairman Daniel Ojijo said property exhibitions have increasingly become more efficient and inexpensive marketing channels available to players in the real estate sector. “The popularity of home exhibitions has been fuelled by the fact that no other form of marketing can get you in a room with so many potential customers actively looking for sellers. Compared to the cost of such advertising vehicles such as newspapers and television, exhibition is less expensive
and delivers immediate and tangible results,” he said. Ojijo said the cost paid by developers to participate in exhibitions is four to five times less than the cost of advertising hence the growing preference. “Instead of placing an advert and waiting in office for your phone to ring, your target customers will be standing in front of you at an exhibition asking what you would have instead paid to say,” he explained. A survey conducted by the United States-based Home Improvement Institute revealed that exhibitions give developers a cost-effective opportunity to sell their products face-to-face to thousands of potential buyers. “Expo visitors have intentions of making purchases and

According to Reuters the CEO believes that only a few employees were involved in the diesel emissions rigging that has hammered the company’s stock and done severe damage to its reputation, refuting the notion that his detailoriented predecessor Martin Winterkorn must have known about it. He said VW would have to become smaller and less
centralised, adding that every model and brand would be scrutinised for its contribution to the company. However, he said an evolution rather than a revolution was needed to get VW back on track, predicting that the company could shine again in two to three years. “The crisis gives us an opportunity to overhaul Volkswagen’s structures,” Mueller said. “We want to make the company slimmer, more decentralised
and give the brands more responsibility. Mueller rejected the suggestion that VW had informed financial markets too late about the diesel problems despite having told officials at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) weeks before it went public. “Based on our understanding of the law, we informed in time,” he concluded.
Nairobi to host first ever local livestock expo Various livestock agencies will hold the first ‘Mifugo ni Mali’ extensive livestock expo at the University of Nairobi’s Upper Kabete Campus in November. The expo comes as a recognition for the need for an extensive livestock chain platform in the country. Some of the agencies organising the exhibition dubbed “Herding for the Markets” include Kenya’s State Department for Livestock, Agri Pro Focus KCB Foundation, Kenya Livestock Marketing Council (KLMC), Kenya Markets Trust (KMT), SNV, and University of Nairobi They have urged stakeholders in the
industry to embrace value addition in livestock sector in order to maximise value for their production. Speaking during a livestock forum held to chart the way forward for the upcoming exhibition, they said value addition in the sector is projected to create an approximate Sh300 million in profit for the farmers. “High returns are expected from sealed and networks established among the stakeholders from the upcoming livestock expo that will also see participants from the Horn of Africa attend the expo. The country would earn billions more annually if players embrace
value addition”, said KCB Foundation director Jane Mwangi. KMT chief executive Paul Wanyagah said despite the growing demand for meat both locally and globally, pastoralists, have the highest number of poverty, economic, insecurity and unemployment cases, yet they produce more than 70 per cent of the meat consumed. The livestock sector has been underperforming as a result of poor infrastructure, limited access to financial services, unpredictable weather patterns, insecurity and a lack of strong farmer groups and associations.

Ice cream I stIck coaster
f you are a lover of the simple things in life, you probably cannot resist grabbing an ice cream or Popsicle everyday on your way home especially given the latest summery weather. Did you know you could use the stick spoons and Popsicle
sticks to make a simple coaster in a matter of minutes? This is a fun project that should preferably involve your friends or siblings as well. The process involves gathering up several ice-cream spoons and Popsicle sticks
depending on how wide you want your coaster to be, some adhesive tape, ornamental items such as stickers, super glue and a crotchet thread. Begin by laying the sticks on flat surface and evening out the edges so that there are no pop outs then
carefully wrap the sticks using the adhesive tape at the middle. Using the thread, create a tight gripping pattern at the upper and lower edges of the stick bundle by looping the thread in and out between the sticks on either side in a series of 3-4 repetitions.
Finally, remove the adhesive tape that you had applied in the middle since the sticks are now co-joined by the thread then use glue to attach your ornamental items to your newly created coaster. Easy as pie!
HOME IMPROVEMENT For those living in extremely shallow areas where nothing physical can be done to keep floods out of the house, the next best alternative is to try and minimize damage when floodwaters enter your house.
floods proofing your house
t
he sun may be out and shining bright despite warnings from the weather man about El Niño rains, but we know tough times lie ahead and as Game of Thrones fans would put it, “winter is coming.” Just because we expect havoc in the rain due to our proneness to flooding doesn’t mean that you have to sit and wait to sweep flood waters out of your house when the rains begin. Here are the two main straightforward methods to flood proof your home. Dry flood proofing This method involves making structural changes to the parts of your house that are located under the design flood elevation (the expected height to be reached by flood waters) so as to keep the space dry during a flood. For example, you can make structural changes like elevating your front door stair case if the flood water level is expected to rise several inches above the ground. You can also build flood walls around these house parts or invest in sand bags piled around the structures to keep the water at bay. Wet flood proofing For those living in extremely shallow areas where nothing physical can be done to keep floods out of the house, the next best alternative is to try and minimize damage when floodwaters enter your house. This can be done by moving furniture, electronics and other household items, while making sure you give the flood water an entry point to avoid building up pressure which leads to wall collapsing. Also, seal off sewer and water systems to prevent health hazards.

Better heart rate
It is a guarantee that if one participates in regular exercise their heart rate becomes more stable in comparison to the people who don’t exercise. The lesser work the heart is made to do, the better the performance.
Fat breakdown
When one exercises on a routine basis, the body adapts and is conditioned to breaking down fats in order to produce energy. This also ensures that one burns fat throughout the day. In order to keep the metabolism active at all times, make sure you do simple impromptu exercises such as walking up and down the stairs at midday.
Heart disease is one of the diabetes related complications. Regular consumption of fish reduces this risk by up to forty percent.
Avocados
Because of their monounsaturated fats, Avocados are the best when it comes to preventing elevated blood sugar after meals. They have the ability to slow down the process of digestion and may reverse insulin resistance as well.
Sweet potatoes

Bill Cosby faces new assault allegations Model Chloe Goins filed a new civil lawsuit on Tuesday, alleging that she was drugged and sexually assaulted by Cosby during a 2008 event at the Playboy Mansion, when Goins was just 18 years old. In the alleged incident, Goins claims that shortly after being introduced to Cosby, he gave her a drink, and she subsequently began feeling nauseous and dizzy. Goins alleges that Cosby escorted her to a room to lie down in, where she says she blacked out, and later awoke to allegedly find Cosby assaulting her. The suit claims that Cosby left immediately after Goins regained consciousness. Can this man be charged already?

Lobby seeks more media space for women issues The Wezesha Dada movement, a women’s empowerment group, has urged policy makers, stakeholders and the media to provide at least five more minutes of coverage weekly to discuss issues that impact the rights of Kenya’s women. Known as ‘Wezesha Dada Inua Jamii’, the movement has been described as “a passionate outcry for the recognition of women and girls as core pillars in the development of our society.” The movement argues that greater representation of women’s issues will allow policymakers and leaders to allocate resources and push for the necessary laws, policies, and programmes create opportunities for Kenya’s women. Inspired by Half the Sky Movement, started with Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s book, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, Wezesha Dada Inua Jamii uses the power of storytelling through various media platforms to share the insightful and inspiring stories of fearless women and men who are bringing positive change to the lives of Kenya’s women and girls. “In 2014, the local top five

television stations aired a total of 16 hours of news stories related to women and girls,” explains a statement from the group. This represents a paltry 4 per cent of news airtime dedicated to talking about the challenges that impact women and girls and the amazing feats Kenyans have made. The movement focuses on issues such as economic empowerment,
education, gender-based violence, reproductive health, and maternal and child health. Using the twitter tag #TellOurStory, Wezesha Dada has embarked on a movement that aims to bring an end to gender inequality. “For years, policy-makers, civil society, and thought leaders have used media and the power
of storytelling as a way to create long-lasting social, political, and economic change,” said the group in a recently released statement. “As media becomes more accessible with the advancement of technology and ICTs, new stories will empower and educate people and help curb abuses such as domestic violence, harmful practices and gender-based discrimination,” said the statement.
Arid counties, nGos bAck sweet potAto plAntinG County governments and nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) in the country’s arid areas have developed an appetite for sweet potatoes. The spuds have proven to be a valuable resource for both their population and their livestock as the versatile crop exhibits faster growing and useful replication traits. The World Food Programme (WFP) has expressed an interest in sweet potatoes with a particular focus on Turkana County. Pokot County has also placed orders with the Kenya Agricultural Livestock and Research Organisation
(Karlo) for the supply of vines for a span of one year. Already, Bomet County has requested Karlo to supply it with sweet potato vines worth Sh800,000. The vines retail at Sh1 each and can produce up to 10 more vines upon maturity. ‘’The overwhelming demand is a good sign especially in areas that have traditionally struggled to get into cash crop production. Sweet potatoes is one of the crops best suited for dry areas having potential to encourage production of the tuber for human consumption and leaves for the animals,’’ said Karlo centre
director, Food Crops Research Institute in Kitale Dr Joyce Malinga. Karlo has been engaged in the development of superior sweet potato varieties seeking to market the crop as key in the country’s quest for food security in the wake of failing rains. High yielding, fast maturing and drought tolerant varieties such as KSP 47, KSP 72 and SPK 004, developed by Karlo have become favourite among farmers in the dry land areas. A Karlo and Agriculture Product Value Chain (APVC) report from 2012 revealed that pastoralists use
vines to feed their livestock with a kilogramme of the vines being enough to maintain the daily energy needs of domesticated animals. The ability of the vines from the new varieties to climb four times faster than the traditional varieties makes them ideal for arid areas. Scientists have been advocating for the human consumption of the sweet potato leaves as vegetables, which the scientists say are rich in Lutein and zeaxanthin, compounds that prevent AgeRelated Muscular Degeneration (AMD), and Cataracts.
World Bank projects fall of global poverty The number of people living in extreme poverty around the world is likely to fall to under 10 per cent of the global population in 2015, according to World Bank projections released earlier this month. The move has offered fresh evidence that a 25-year-long sustained reduction in poverty is moving the world closer to the historic goal of ending poverty by 2030. The Bank uses an updated international benchmark, which states that people must be living on more than $1.90 (Sh196) a day to be
considered to be living above the poverty line. The standard incorporates new information on differences in the cost of living across countries Using this new line, as well as new country-level data on living standards, the World Bank projects that global poverty will have fallen from 902 million people or 12.8 per cent of the global population in 2012 to 702 million people, or 9.6 per cent of the global population, this year. The organisation, which released the information on the eve of its annual meeting
in Lima, Peru, based its current projections on the latest available data. World Bank Group President, Jim Yong Kim said that the continued major reductions in poverty were due to strong growth rates in developing countries in recent years, investments in people’s education, health, and social safety nets that helped keep people from falling back into poverty. “This is the best story in the world today. These projections show us that we are the first generation in human history that can end extreme poverty,’’ Kim said.

YOURSAY Teachers need moral support now more than ever I hear some derision and sarcasm going round over the teachers’ unfruitful one monthstrike, with certain popular advert wordings I normally hear in one vernacular radio FM ,”we’ve been cheated”, now customised for dejected teachers. This is my message to those scoffers, know for sure that teachers’ presence in school doesn’t mean much as to their presence in school or class in ‘spirit’. We all know that teachers went back to class,
but wounded and with bleeding heart after the government failed to effect the 50-60 per cent pay hike and the nation was in mourning period. Do we therefore help heal teachers’ wounds by hurling such mockery at them especially now that they need a shoulder to lean on and a rubber to erase the bitter past than ever? This is the time parents, BOGs, PTAs should be closer to teachers. — Son of God-Nairobi
Students shouldn’t turn to exam leakages I join stakeholders in the education sector specifically the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) who have kicked off examination briefing in readiness for the national exams next week. I would like to advise students not to looks for ‘mwaks’ and just remain confident and focused because there are thugs out to take advantage of candidates and con them cash in exchange
of fake exam papers. As much as students are caring, I would like the Knec to work even harder to ensure that these daylight fraudsters who play a major role towards poor performances amongst our kids are dealt with. I am not just saying this for the sake of it, but I believe most students will turn on ‘fake leakages’ just because they want to excel. —Legal hustler, kawangware.
Kuria’s ICC remarks fake and cheap Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria’s confession that he and others procured witnesses against Deputy President William Ruto is a ploy by the government to seek cheap attention from other International Criminal Court (ICC) member States and also
to prepare grounds to reject any ruling that could come from the cases more so if they are not for Ruto. What pains me most is the reaction of URP leaders to his revelation that he bought some of the witnesses at Sh2,000. Any right-thinking citizen should
see all these ploys and reject them at all cost. Kuria is behaving like a lover who infects his partner with HIV virus and later owns up when the partner is on his deathbed. These are cheap tricks from Jubilee. — Anonymous
State good at making ‘empty’ directives After news more than 500 students were quizzed in a bizarre sex and alcohol party in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu county, the government was quick to announce the closure the Eldoret bar (name withheld), but surprisingly the bar is still operating. Ironically, the bar are directly opposite a local police station and they might have been doing this even for years.
To further aggravate the situation, majority of students involved are minors from primary and secondary schools aged below 18. I call upon the government to always make a follow up on the directives it gives for the interest of the public and to save our young generations too. — Legal Hustler, Kawangware.
Why government should lower taxes
The government should shield common consumer from heavy taxation. Kenyans are tired of being taken for a ride with their hard-earned levies being misappropriated and siphoned wealthy politicians. A 30 per cent tax is too high by any standards and Kenyan rates are among the most
oppressive in the world. I implore our policy makers to ensure the current rates are lowered so that these greedy, inconsiderate and incongruent thieves in the name of politicians have less to steal. The government and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) should work towards
lowering our tax rate to a manageable levels. We pay for services, yet our leaders do not share the pain we go through and instead take advantage and loot from us. Service provision remains poor yet the government has continued to milk us dry! — S.B.

SPORTS BRIEFS Nadal beat former ball boy, Wu in China Open Rafael Nadal had his serve broken four times by one of his former ball boys before progressing to the second round of the China Open. The world number eight beat China’s 230th-ranked Wu Di 6-4 6-4 in his first match since being knocked out in the third round of the US open last month. Top seed Novak Djokovic improved his perfect record in Beijing to 25-0 by beating Italian Simone Bolelli 6-1 6-1. His winning run started in 2009, when he won the first of five China titles. Nadal dropped three straight games on his serve in the second set against the wildcard, who once tossed him balls and towels in Shanghai. “The last three games of the match I was playing better. I hit some good forehands down the line and that is why I finished well,” said the 29-year-old Spaniard. Nadal will play Canada’s Vasek Pospisil in the second round while Djokovic faces Australian qualifier John Millman.
Queries as FKF releases clubs list ahead of polls Queries have emerged over the list of clubs published by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for the forthcoming national election after it emerged most clubs lack the requisite match reports.
Most of the 1,712 clubs from 13 branches do not have the match report for three years, a requirement before any club can be allowed to vote. More confusion was noted in
Kitui County which according to the list should have four clubs but, five (ATG Thitani Unted, Kabana FC, Mwingi Youth Generation Migwayo FC and Kitui County United) have been listed.
Formula One could be sold: Ecclestone
Formula One could be sold this year to one of three interested buyers, the sport’s boss Bernie Ecclestone has revealed. The 84-year-old has not identified the potential buyers, but said he had been asked to remain as commercial chief, a role he has held since 1978. Stephen Ross, the owner of NFL side Miami Dolphins, has been working with investors from Qatar to buy a stake in the sport. Investment fund CVC Capital Partners is F1’s controlling shareholder. Ecclestone, who has a 5.3 per cent stake in F1 said: “There has been a lot of interest, but there are three (interested parties) at the moment. I will be surprised if one of them does not buy them shortly.” CVC owns 35.5 per cent after initially gaining control of the sport in 2006 for around $2 billion. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff told the same conference that it is important to have a “sustainable shareholder with a long-term perspective and vision”.
Fiji thump Uruguay in ongoing rugby WC Fiji scored seven-tries in their 47-15 win over Pool A minnows Uruguay to end an encouraging World Cup campaign in Milton Keynes. A try and a penalty each from Nemia Kenatale and Leone Nakarawa helped the Pacific Islanders lead 26-10 at half-time, earning a bonus point before the break. Carlos Arboleya and Agustin Ormaechea crossed in each half. To score Uruguay first World Cup try since 2003. Fiji eased away in the final quarter with three more tries, as Uruguay were reduced to 14 men as Ormaechea was sent to the sin bin. Uruguay now travel to Manchester for their final pool match on Saturday against host England who were eliminated by Australia last Saturday. Fiji faced a tough task to reach the World Cup quarterfinals for a third time, having been drawn alongside Australia, England and Wales in the ‘Group of Death’.
KPL Chairm,an Ambrose Rachier is congratulated by Ronny Osumba at the Nyayo National stadium shortly before he launched his candidature yesterday for the forth-coming FKF polls. Queries have been raised over the list of delegates from clubs.
Only a few branches such as Mwingi West and Kisii district have clubs that have provided full match report for the last three years, 2012-2014. Some clubs from Mwingi Central and Provincial and division 1 also provided match reports, but only for the year 2013. It is not yet clear whether clubs without a full match reports will be allowed to vote. If that does not happen, the incumbent president Sam Nyamweya who comes from Kisii and Nick Mwendwa (from the larger Ukambani region) will have clear advantage over their opponents with most clubs from those regions having complied with the requirement. A further list from the remaining seven branches was due to be released by end of today, October 7th 2015. On Tuesday, Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier who announced his interest to vie for the FKF top seat read mischief in the list of clubs eligible to vote. He called for fresh vetting of clubs and immediate hand over of the electoral process to the newly-constituted electoral board chaired by City Lawyer Donald Kipkorir.
Kenya in search of maiden aaGTc Golf championship Kenya will be in search of a first title during the Africa Amateur Golf Team Championships (AAGTC) expected to tee off at the Limuru Golf and Country Club on October 11. The host will be represented by five players, led by captain John Karichu. The tournament has attracted players from 18 countries among them dominant South Africa, Tunisia, Zambia, Namibia Mauritius Tanzania, Egypt, Seychelles, Uganda, Rwanda, Nigeria and Ivory Coast. Ghana and Ethiopia withdrew in the last minute. The event will run until October 16. South Africa has dominated the tournament with six wins in Botswana (2003), Uganda (2005), Namibia (2007), Egypt (2009), 2011 at home and Swaziland in 2013, but they should expect strong challenge from Team Kenya. Other Kenyan players are Bo Gera, Paul Muchangi, John Kariuki, Jay Sandhu and Brian Njoroge as the coach. This is the first time Kenya is hosting the continental event that is contested over four rounds of stroke play, each team has four players but only the best three scores per round is counted towards the team total. The most outstanding player who scores best during the championships will also be awarded a prize for the overall individual winner.

CHARGED: Jorge Messi, the father to Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi could be jailed for 18 months for tax evasion charges. While his son was cleared of tax fraud, the father is in trouble after Spanish prosecutors confirmed charges against him.
Messi’s father faces jail term over tax charges Prosecutors in Spain have dropped tax charges against Argentina and Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi, but will pursue a case against his father. If convicted, Jorge Messi faces 18 months in prison and a Sh232.6 million (€2m) in fine. Both Messi and his father were accused of defrauding Spanish authorities of more than Sh365 million (€4m). Prosecutors allege that Jorge avoid paying tax on his son’s earnings by
using offshore companies in Belize and Uruguay between 2007 and 2009. Messi’s lawyers argued that the player had “never devoted a minute of his life to reading, studying or analysing” the contracts. The High Court in Barcelona ruled in June that Messi should not be granted impunity for not knowing what was happening with his finances, which were being managed in part by his father. But the player, regarded as one of the best
in the history of the game, will no longer face charges according to BBC Sport. Messi and his father made a voluntary Sh581.5 million (€5m) “corrective payment”, equal to the alleged unpaid tax plus interest, in August 2013. The income related to Messi’s image rights, include contracts with Banco Sabadell, Danone, Adidas, Pepsi-Cola, Procter and Gamble, and the Kuwait Food Company.
England now hit by injuriEs ahEad of Euro 2016 matchEs England has been hit with a major injury set back ahead of their Friday clash against Estonia in a Euro 2016 qualifier. Captain Wayne Rooney (pictured) is doubtful while Everton’s John Stones has been withdrawn from the squad due to injury. The Manchester United striker and England captain sat out during the team’s training session on Tuesday with Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, and Liverpool’s Danny Ings, called up for the first time both struggling with injuries. Stones also missed the Sunday Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool which ended in 1-1 draw is side-lined with a knee injury he sustained during Capital One Cup win over Reading on September 22. England manager Roy Hodgson has drafted in Tottenham’s Andros
Townsend and Kyle Walker as cover for the crocked players. England, who have already qualified, face Estonia at Wembley on Friday and Lithuania in Vilnius on Monday, but the match is still important for both players and manager considering their downward trajectory in Fifa ranking of late. Spurs midfielder Townsend, 24, last featured against Slovenia in June, while full-back Walker, 25, won his 11th cap in the friendly draw in Italy in March. England have secured top spot in Group E with eight wins from eight games awaiting a trip to France which will host the event next year. Hodgson named Stones in his squad for the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers last week, but on Tuesday night the Football Association confirmed the 21-year-old had withdrawn.

Rachier joins FKF race Gor Mahia club chairman to battle it out with five other candidates
G
or Mahia and Kenyan Premier League –KPL chairman Ambrose Rachier has promised to help Kenya move to top 60 in the world Fifa ranking if elected Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President. Speaking at Nyayo National Stadium yesterday during the launch of his bid, Rachier also said he would help Harambee Stars top East Africa and move to within 15 top African countries. His pledges come at a time when Harambee Stars ranking is on a steady decline which saw them move 15 places down in the latest ranking released last week to 131 in the world. At the same time, Rachier has hinted that he will resign as Gor Mahia chairman if elected KFK boss. Rachier who is set to chair Kenya Premier League (KPL) for a third consecutive year after Gor Mahia won the league said he will find time ‘when elected’ FKF boss in the coming November elections. According to KPL constitution, chairman of the league winners automatically ascend to the seat for a period of one year. “When and if I am elected, then I will see what to do if conflict of interest may arise,” said Rachier
when asked how he will juggle the three responsibilities. Rachier is also a lawyer and a lecturer of French in two local Universities. The man under whose leadership K’Ogalo managed to win the league without losing a match in 26 games even without a sponsor unveiled his blue print which will tackle five key pillars; including plans to support the national teams (men and women); New Youth coaches and referees training programmenew and much better playing field and family and fan friendly stadia; New management training programmes for FKF national/county/branch/league/ club official and new public and private sector partnership. Rachier became the latest entrant into the ever growing list of contestant including incumbent Sam Nyamweya, Kariobangi Sharks chairman, Nick Mwendwa, former FKF Vice President Sammy Sholei, former National Youth Fund chairman Gor Semelenag’o and Sirisia MP John Waluke.
