Policeman to hang for Sh90,000 theft

A

police officer has been sentenced to hang after he was found guilty of violently robbing a Nairobi businessman two years ago. Constable Gilbert Ingosi Chemosi was booked for a date with the hangman by Nairobi Chief Magistrate Hannah Ndung’u. The court convicted Chemosi of violently robbing Chrispine Otieno Odongo of

Sh90,000 on June 25, 2012 along Bandari Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area. He robbed the cash after his target withdrew it from a bank. Ndung’u, however, acquitted Chemosi’s coaccused, George Kamau Ndogo, a civilian, for lack of direct evidence linking him to the offence. Ndogo is facing a separate robbery with violence charge alongside three other officers. Judgement on

their case is still pending. Chemosi had also been accused of refusing to have his fingerprints taken during investigations, but the court dismissed the charge for lack of evidence. The court sent the officer to the gallows after the complainant positively identified him. The court was told he was dressed in police uniform at the time of the robbery. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

“The complainant had a firm resolve and was sure the officer was involved in the robbery,” she ruled. The court rejected Chemosi’s defence that on the fateful night he “never left his work station” and held that he was in a position to leave the station, commit

the crime and rush back. “He had all the opportunity to leave his work station and commit the offence and return to work,” the magistrate ruled. A search at his Makongeni Police Station house, the magistrate observed, yielded an unserviceable handcuff, which “he explained away as having belonged to

another officer who occupied the house before him.” She said the complainant positively identified Chemosi because he attacked Odongo while in uniform. “He saw the AK-47 rifle which had been assigned to the officer for his guard duties and identified the person who

robbed him,” the magistrate said. “He was told to return to the scene, which was in the vicinity where the officer had been stationed to work and saw him again,” the magistrate said. The sentencing brings to six the number of convicts to be condemned to the gullows in just under two months. In November,

NCIC move opens Kuria to hate speech charge Hopes of Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria being let off the hook in a case in which he is charged with hate speech have been dimmed after the National Cohesion and Integration Cohesion (NCIC) today withdrew reconciliatory efforts to have the case withdrawn. The cohesion body has asked courts and the Director of Public Prosecution to pursue Kuria’s case to the end. Speaking on Friday at the commission headquarters, NCIC chairman Francis Kaparo said due to the continuous misuse of social media by Kuria, the lawmaker may not stop posting divisive posts. “Kuria has tainted the relationship we have had in supporting him to reconcile to Kenyans.. it is apparently clear Kuria is not willing to let go his divisive posts on social media. We call on DPP and courts to investigate Kuria and carry on with prosecution. We will file an affidavit to show how Kuria violated the reconciliatory process,” Kaparo said. Kuria and the commission had earlier in the week struck a deal in which he issued a public apology to pave way for the withdrawal of the charges. And only yesterday, the parties were in court for an appraisal on the reconciliation efforts. But it seems another controversial post the MP made hours after his apology has left the commission with no option but to withdraw support for the lawmaker. Kuria has been charged in court with ethnic abuse and warned not to make any offensive posts.

Pope blasts terrorists, criticises cartoonists

IT’S WRONG: Pope Francis and Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio on arrival in Philippines. He condemned killing in the name of religion.

Weighing in on last week’s terror attack in France and the debate over freedom of expression it stirred, Pope Francis said killing “in the name of God” is wrong. It is also wrong to “provoke” people by belittling their religion. The Pope said there was no justification for killing of 17 people in three strikes, including a massacre in and around the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. The Islamist extremist were the attackers, some of whom called out “Allahu akbar,” which is Arabic for “God is great,” as they singled out the magazine, French authorities and Jewish people. “One cannot make war (or) kill in the name of one’s own religion,” Francis said on his way to the Philippines. “... To kill in the name of God is an aberration.” But even as he decried the violence and supported freedom of expression, the pontiff said such freedom must have limits. He didn’t mention Charlie Hebdo specifically, or the cartoon depictions of Mohammed, something many Muslims find offensive. A previous cartoon was one reason the Paris magazine was targeted. The magazine didn’t back down afterwards with a post-attack cover again showing

Mohammed, this time crying and holding a sign with the rallying cry “Je suis Charlie,” French for “I am Charlie.” Still, even without talking about the magazine by name, the Pope prefaced his remarks by saying, “Let’s go to Paris, lets speak clearly.” He then referred to recent violence there, as well as the debate about freedom of expression. Francis said on his flight from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Manila that everyone had not only the liberty, but also the obligation “to say what he thinks to help the common good.” But this should be done without giving offense because human dignity should be respected. If a friend “says a swear word against my mother, then a punch awaits him,” Francis said. Vatican Radio reported that he then “gestured with a pretend punch” directed at the friend, Alberto Gasbarri -- an action that many journalists interpreted as a joke. Vatican spokesman Thomas Rosica later told CNN the remark was “spoken colloquially.” Rosica said the Pope wasn’t advocating violence or in any way justifying the terror attacks. Right after the punch gesture, Francis said: “It’s normal, it’s normal.

CARTOONSPEAK Kenya’s coffee is second best in the world, experts Kenya produces the second best coffee in the world, according to the latest poll by the Thrillist Group, a digital media company that specialises in brands like food, drink and travel. Ethiopia’s coffee came in first, Kenya’s second and Colombia’s third. The firm did their research by asking a group of 11 roasters and writers to weigh in. Despite personal bias in taste, education, and life experience influencing one’s choices, the experts managed to sample a diverse cross-section of the coffee world. “We feel like this is an honest pulse of the industry, as taken from some of its

finest minds,” said Dan Gentile, from Thrillist. The experts were told to use a point system to rank the countries’ coffee, giving 3 points to the one they thought was best, two points to what was second best and one point to the coffee that came third, in their professional opinion. Guatemalan coffee was ranked the world’s fourth best coffee variety while Costa Rican and Honduran coffee were tied for fifth. Indonesia therefore came in 7th while Rwanda and Panama took the eighth spot, leaving the United States to take the tenth position on the list.

Construction regulator blames corruption for unsafe buildings

Belgium on high terror alert after thwarting raid Belgium is on high alert after a major anti-terror raid in which two suspected Islamist militants were killed. The suspects were shot dead in the eastern town of Verviers after they opened fire on police with automatic weapons on Thursday evening. Officials say they had returned from Syria and planned imminent attacks on police targets. Another suspect was wounded before being arrested.

TOPPLED DREAM: A crowd gathers around a six story building that collapsed while under construction in Embakasi on June 14 2011. The National Construction Authority has blamed corruption for the construction of unsafe buildings in the city just a few days after two buildings collapsed in the city claiming at least 10 lives. The regulator said that the buildings are going up at a very fast rate that the body can hardly keep up with Architecture professor Alfred Omenya of the Technical University of Kenya in an interview this morning said that the regulators are often paid to look the other way. “Of course the big issue, the big elephant in the room, is corruption,” he said. “Even when they (regulators) are there, they are able to allow a whole lot of substandard practices, a whole lot of illegal practices, because of course they’re able to extort bribes and are not serious about doing their work.” The authority has shut down more than 500 sites across the

country since August. This comes even as a crackdown against rickety buildings has started in Nairobi just days after president Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a safety audit following the collapse of two buildings in which 13 people died. A demolition squad descended on Kasarani estate yesterday and brought down a four-story residential building that was found to be unsafe. President Uhuru Kenyatta had directed that an audit of all city buildings be carried out to ascertain their safety blaming impunity to the recent wave of tragedies. “It is this impunity that ensures that developers pay no attention to procedures or supervision requirement at every stage of development — from planning to completion of construction,” he said.

High fees prompt Chinese cab drivers to down tools Taxi drivers in many Chinese cities have gone on strike to steep rental fees. They are also angered by competition from firms such as Uber, a smartphone-based transportation network which is fast assuming a monopoly. The drivers are demanding lower rental fees which they claim may eat into their profit. The current rental rate in Chinese cities such as Nanjing can go as high as 9,000 yuan (Sh133,000) per month. But taxi companies seem to have little incentive to lower rates. They have a strong hold on the market and the government has not issued new taxi licenses since the early 1990s. In Shanghai, for example, a licence can cost as much as 500,000 yuan (Sh7.4 million). Drivers are also upset by growing competition from smartphone apps such as Uber. The app helps commuters locate taxis and their popular Chinese counterparts backed by

major companies such as Alibaba and Tencent. The strikes have hit several cities and in some places has become almost impossible to spot taxis on the streets.

Last week, China’s Ministry of Transport banned private cars from providing services through apps after other drivers went on strike in some cities in January.

Low income Kenyans pay Sh4,000 monthly for water Low income Kenyans pay more for water than their high income counterparts, studies have shown. Many residents of areas prone to shortage pay up to Sh4,000 a month for the commodity as others pay almost nothing. The cost is driven by greedy brokers, vendors and leakages which force tenants to pay for what they do not use. A study dubbed by the Kenya National Water Development report and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) shows the average consumption per household is 78.7 litres per day. The amount adds up to about 2,400 litres per month which costs up to Sh45. Researchers from iHub, one of Nairobi’s leading tech spaces, told X News that with tenants paying between Sh500 and Sh1,000 for the service, landlords make Sh455 profit. Different articles and surveys show that up to 50% of water goes unaccounted for in Nairobi due to leakages. Many of the pipes were set up before 1963 and are worn out. About 4 pc of residents pay nothing after getting supply through illegal means. Meanwhile, 56 pc of residents pay Sh500 or less each month, while 28 pc between Sh500 and Sh1,000 over the period.

NO WORK: Taxi drivers across China have downed tools to protest high rental fees and competition from firms like Uber, a smartphone-based transportation network.

Nine pc pay between Sh1,000 and Sh2,000 a month, while two pc pay between Sh2,000 and Sh4,000.

Business wise Small businesses can improve but most owners give up after 3 years Small businesses are most profitable just before and sometimes after they clock their 36th month in operation In fact, Small and Mediumsized Enterprises, owned by both the young and old, do their best just before they hit the 3 year mark, new research has revealed. Within their first year in operation, 68 per cent of new small business are performing poorly while 32 per cent are doing well. “Clearly, businesses that are starting seem to face serious challenges that make the owners consider their businesses as doing poorly within the first year of start up,” says a trio of researchers that included Samuel Mureithi, a business analyst from Daystar University.

However, these numbers improve over time. Within the first three years in the small business market, only 44 per cent of enterprises are failing while 56 per cent are succeeding. “It also seems that most micro and small businesses hit their peak at the fifth year,” they add, having carried out hundreds of interviews with business owners and managers across Nairobi. They say: “After the fifth year, most entrepreneurs seem to suffer from what may be described as entrepreneurial burnout and the excitement declines.” This partly explains why most businesses that are more than 5 years and above consider their businesses as being in the process of failing.

Kenyans urged to tap into unexploited art industry

ART AND SOUL: Boniface Maina, a local artist, posing next to one of his masterpieces during the Empty Walls No More exhibition.

Kenyans have been urged to exploit the untapped art industry which poses serious investment opportunities. Speaking during the official launch of Empty Walls No More Exhibition, Project Coordinator of the Little Art Gallery, William Ndwiga, said art is a viable occupation which has massive investment opportunities that are yet to be discovered “People should start viewing art collecting as an investment. At Little Art Gallery we strive to make economic sense in all our exhibitions. If the art does not make sense for our exhibition or artists, we do not take the art forward. We want to sell works that can accrue value in future,” said Ndwiga. Ndwiga challenged Kenyans to think outside the box when it comes to investing. “People should not view stocks or land as the only investment opportunities. Art is also a good investment as it appreciates in value. For example, if you buy a piece worth Sh100,000 today, it will definitely fetch a higher price in future just like land,” said Ndwiga. He added that one does not have to be super rich to invest in art but rather start small and work their way up as they become better at collecting art.“Collecting art should be undertaken more out of passion. I personally have 150 pieces and I am not that rich,” he says. One artist, Boniface Maina, sold a piece worth Sh280, 000 during the exhibition and said the Kenyan market is opening up and artists themselves can earn a living from selling their art.

SMART MOVE Subukia farmers use neem for pest control Farmers in the Subukia area of Nakuru are cutting the spread of pests by up to 40 per cent and at extra cost thanks to the freely available neem leaves and seeds that have proven more potent than conventional pesticides. The neem plants have an active ingredient called “azadirachtin” that is found in all parts of the tree, with the largest concentrations in the seeds that can be extracted and used as an insecticide which can be used to ward off more than 400 species of insects. According to Dr. Jacinta Were, a scientist who has been involved in educating the farmers,

the use of neem has proven its prowess in pest control. For the pesticide to work, the leaves are pounded in a mortar and the resultant pulp is strained in water overnight for application while the dried seeds are opened up to obtain their cores. The cores are then pounded, mixed with water and squeezed to make oil. The leaves and the seeds can also be grounded into powder and used directly to dust crops in the field or to protect grain from dangerous pests.Dr. Were says that the neem does not kill the insects immediately.

The insects die during their development stage causing a reduction in the overall pest population over time. Most insects that have come across neem will stop feeding shortly after exposure therefore ending the damage to the plant. The application of the neem also discourages adult insects from laying eggs on treated plant surfaces and this helps to prevent re-infestation of treated crops. Unlike synthetic chemicals such as endosulfan, neem-based materials are hardly dangerous to the environment and are relatively non-toxic to mammals.

Congratulations on winning three awards at the Bingwa Awards. How do you feel? Thank you very much. Winning these awards makes me feel special and appreciated. I am reminded me that there is an hour added to my no-sleep hours because I have to come back ten times stronger this year! What is the inspiration behind your music? I am always inspired by my previous work. I am also my own inspiration, everything I rap about is always about my life and what I go through. Who do you look up to in the industry? I admire Kevin Hart’s hard work and ethic; he inspires me the most. In Kenya, I like Wyre’s consistency and humbleness. What should your fans expect from you this year? Last year, I did one solo project and three huge collabos that were basically with Kenyan artistes. I was trying to break the trend

At the same time there is an album by me and V-Sita that will drop this year. Which artistes have you worked with so far and which artistes would you like to work with? I am proud to say that I’m the only artiste in Kenya who made it to the limelight and decided to collabo with new artistes who were not known, in a mission to take them to a level that they could get recognition and continue. I am looking forward to working with Chameleone, Professor Jay and V-Sita. We noticed you have a girlfriend? She is called Frediana, and she is also an artiste by the stage name is Sosuun but I call her “The Best Rapper”. What goes in to selecting the different outfits for your every show? I dress according to how I am feeling that day—o specific pattern just simple fresh and comfortable. Where do you shop for your outfits or do you have them specifically designed? I mostly get most of my wardrobe from Tanzania and this is simply because they have a wider variety to select from. Who is your favourite fashion designer internationally and locally? Internationally, I like Jordan, Polo Ralph, Last kings and Trukfit. I do not fancy anyone specific locally. What is the one fashion accessory that you must have while on stage?

I must have my Snap Back, earrings, ring and stunners! Does the fashion change depending on your location. For example, are there certain outfits meant only for Nairobi shows, others just for Mombasa shows? Yes, the weather determines how I dress because some places may be really hot like Mombasa, while other places cold. Sometimes the audience also dictate how far one can go. Do you change your outfits during a show and if you do, how many times? It depends on how long I will be performing. A 15-minutes act won’t need a change. An hour, however, will require several outfits depending on the routine.

Ministry should regulate bus fare after fuel price cuts The Government should do everything to ensure matatu operators do not exploit Kenyans after the reduction in fuel prices (PSVs fares stay up as

fuel prices drop, Friday, January 16, 2015). It has become the trend that matatu owners continue to over-charge passengers even after fuel price cuts

have been announced. The reduction was this time massive and I do not know why the Transport ministry should not offer a standardised list

of maximum fares that should be charged on specific routes. – Susan Mwende, Nairobi

Injury to sideline Wanyama for weeks Southampton boss Ronald Koeman fears Victor Wanyama could be out for up to five weeks after the midfielder suffered a hamstring injury in Wednesday’s FA Cup win at Ipswich. Wanyama was taken off seconds before half-time in the third-round replay. Koeman, who said playing replays in an already busy schedule is “crazy”, had initially planned to only play Wanyama for 45 minutes. “It is a real negative,” he said. “We already have some other injuries. If it is a hamstring injury then he will be out for four to five weeks.” Wanyama has been a key player for Southampton this season, making 24 appearances in all competitions Injury means he could miss the visit by Liverpool on February 22 and games against Newcastle, Swansea, QPR and West Ham. Southampton are fighting for a top-four finish in the EPL but have a number of injury concerns. Midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin missed Wednesday’s game against Ipswich with a leg injury.

Ex-Brazil hero Ronaldo plots comeback with US league club Former Brazil striker Ronaldo has pledged to get back in shape with a view to playing for US club Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Ronaldo recently became a minority owner of Strikers, who play in America’s second-tier North American Soccer League (NASL). “I will train a lot, and if the coach needs me, maybe (return to playing),” he told a news conference. The 38-year-old last played with Brazilian club Corinthians in 2011. “It’s easy to get in shape - you have to train,” three-time World Player of the

Year Ronaldo added. “To play a soccer game you have to be in very good shape so I will try. “I’ll start another challenge and I’m sure it will help the league and it will help the team and help soccer in America.” Ronaldo won the World Cup with Brazil in 1994 and 2002, finishing as top-scorer in the latter tournament with eight goals. He also played for Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven, Inter Milan and Real Madrid during a decorated club career.

Mayweather, Pacquiao title clash still far off

OUT FOR WEEKS: Saints star midfielder Kenyan Victor Wanyama (centre) lies on the pitch after pulling his hamstring in their 1-0 win over Ipswich.

A long-awaited welterweight fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao is still a long way off, according to the latter’s agent. Fred Sternburg has denied reports Pacquiao had agreed terms on a 2 May bout with Mayweather in Las Vegas. “There is still a long way to go,” said Sternburg. “At least the movement has been in a positive direction.” Filipino Pacquiao, 36, and unbeaten American Mayweather, 37, are considered the best fighters of their

generation. Eight-division world champion Pacquiao is the holder of the WBO belt, while Mayweather is the WBC and WBA champion. A fight between the two has long been talked about but they have so far been able to agree a deal. One stumbling block is Mayweather’s insistence on a strict blood-testing programme during training, but Pacquiao said those demands cast him in a bad light as a suspected cheat.

AFCON 2015: Eq. Guinea president buys tickets for 40,000 fans

AIRBONE: Senegal taking on Equitorial Guinea in the AFCON 2012 when Equitorial Guinea co-hosted the continental showpiece with Gabon. The hosts beat senegal 2-1.

Equatorial Guinea president Teodoro Obiang Nguema has paid for 40,000 tickets for fans to attend the Africa Cup of Nations in his country. The nation replaced Morocco as hosts only in December and there are concerns the games will be very poorly-attended. “We must give solemnity to this event, we have to buy tickets to fill stadiums,” said Nguema. “Let those who have the means help the poor. Myself, I bought 40,000 tickets at a rate of 10,000 per region.”

PRINCE Oniangue: Le Roy can inspire Congo Congo midfielder Prince Oniangue believes coach Claude LeRoy can lead the country to at least the last-eight at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. Frenchman LeRoy has coached four different teams at seven editions of the tournament, winning the competition in 1998 with Cameroon. And Oniangue feels LeRoy will inspire them in Equatorial Guinea. Congo open their campaign against hosts Equatorial Guinea tomorrow. “Most times he gets to the quarter-finals at least, so we can work knowing that target is very possible,” he said. The 26-year-old Oniangue, who plays his club football in France for Reims, says he is confident LeRoy’s knowledge of the tournament will help propel the team out of a group that contains the hosts, Burkina Faso and Gabon. “Having a coach like Claude LeRoy helps a lot. He’s going for his eighth Nations Cup appearance and that brings a lot to the team,” Oniangue added. Congo enjoyed their heyday in the 1970s, when the Red Devils beat Mali 3-2 in the final of the 1972 tournament. Two years later, the holders took eventual finalists Zambia to extra-time in the semi-finals before losing 4-2. Congo have failed to reach a Nations Cup semi-final since but Oniangue, who scored against Nigeria and Sudan during the qualifiers, said: “I think everything is possible. The tournament will be played between 17 January and 8 February.

ROYAL PRINCE: Emmanuel Eminike of Nigeria against Oniangue Prince of Congo during the 2014 African Nations Cup qualifying Match between Nigeria and Congo Republic.

The reference to regions is the four cities that are hosting games - Malabo, the capital; Bata, the biggest mainland city; and Ebebiyin and Mongomo, in the country’s interior. Nguema added that the purchase price of the tickets is shs 7,500making the total price shs3.6million. He said the stadiums needed to be full in order to secure a return for Equatorial Guinea’s stepping in to take on hosting duties. To encourage people to attend matches the working day for

civil servants has been cut by two hours on match days. Equatorial Guinea were installed as hosts after the Confederation of Africa Football rejected Morocco’s please to postpone the 17 January to 8 February tournament. Morocco feared the potential spread of the deadly Ebola virus which broke out in West Africa in March 2014 and has claimed the lives of 8,386 people in six countries, according to WHO figures up to 12 January.

Beach volleyball team to be selected in Diani The Kenya Volleyball Federation - beach volleyball commission has set the dates for the Beach Volleyball tournament to be used to select Kenya’s team for the forthcoming Zone 5 Championships. The tournament will be held at the Jacaranda Hotel Diani between 31st January to 1st February 2015. The selected team will represent Kenya at the regional Championships that will bring together competitors from: Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti. The Zone 5 Championships will also be used as the African qualification to 2016 Olympic Games (CCUP). The competition will be hosted by Tanzania on 15th-19th Feb 2015. Meanwhile Benard Musumba is back to pair with his former

partner Alex Kariuki ahead of team selection for the Continental Cup. In his last assignment of 2014, Musumba paired with Italy-based national team libero John Ndung’u at the Castle Lite Beach volleyball Cup in Lido, Uganda. The two bowed out of the games at the quarter-finals stage. The General Service Unit duo has intensified preparations for the tournament, having resumed training early last month. The pair hope to pick up from where they left and press on for a slot in the Continental Cup. In the women’s category, the consistent two pairs of Prisons Kenya’s Salome Wanjala/ Elizabeth Wanyama and, Eunice Maiyo/Gaudenzia Makokha of KCB are expected to participate.

Wanga grateful as Al-Merreikh hold Schalke 04

K

enyan striker Allan Wanga played 64 minutes as his Sudanese club El-Merreikh took on German giants Schalke 04 in friendly match at the Aspire Academy stadium in Qatar. The match ended on a 2-2 draw. Wanga, who had gone into the match in high spirits, was pleased with his performance in the game. “Playing against some of the finest talent in the world gave me great exposure, and I can only keep growing,” he said. After a barren first half, Merreikh took a lead in the 57th minute, with Bakri Abdel Gadir converting an awarded penalty. The celebration was, however, short-lived as Schalke came back into the match two minutes later, through a Jan Klaas Huntelaar strike aided by Tranquillo Barnetta. Schalke then surged ahead on the 72nd minute through Leroy Sane, who substituted Kevin Prince Boateng on the 30th minute, after the latter took a knock. Merreikh’s Marhoum Mohamed equalised with two minutes left to play. Matija Nastasic, who was acquired on loan from Manchester City earlier this month, went straight into the starting line-up and played 45 minutes on his first outing with the club.
