eaders from across the political divide have asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to focus on fixing the country’s economy and eliminating corruption in government in his speech at tomorrow’s Mashujaa Day celebrations. They also want the president to calm down the rising political temperatures linked to the ICC cases facing Deputy President William Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang. Opposition senators James Orengo (Siaya) and Johnstone Muthama (Machakos) said millions of Kenyans face tough economic times for which President Kenyatta should give direction. “The country’s economy is not doing well, Treasury Cabinet Secretary has admitted that there is cash crunch in the country, we should focus on making the lives of Kenyans better,” said Orengo. Their concerns have been shared by Jubilee lawmakers Bare Shill (Fafi), Muthomi Njuki (Chuka Igambang’ombe), William Cheptumo (Baringo North) and Victor Munyaka of Machakos Town, CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Gives us a break, furious Jubilee MPs tell ICC trail chamber judges MONDAY, OCTBER 19, 2015

More than 110 Jubilee MPs have dismissed an order by judges of the International Criminal Court 9ICC) against pro-Deputy President William Ruto’s prayer rallies, terming it unlawful and a violation of values under the Rome Statute and fundamental principles of international law. In statement read by Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau on behalf of the lawmakers at a rally in Suswa, Narok County, the leaders termed the directive by The Hague-based court as an attempt to lecture, intimidate and gag Kenyans and their leaders. “When the court frustrates the establishment of an independent oversight mechanism as provided by Article 112(4) of the Rome Statute to ensure accountability of all its organs, and instead opts to operate opaquely and with impunity, then where does the court find the morality and legitimacy to lecture Kenyans and their leaders?” they pose. “We are shocked that this unwarranted lecture and attempted intimidation by the chamber was orchestrated, prosecuted and determined by the court without an application by any party as would be expected of any judicial institution of any standard,” the leaders said in a statement. This comes after ICC Trail Chamber

DEFIANT: Jubilee lawmakers Aden Duale, Charles Keter and James Lomenen in a previous prayer rally. They have told off ICC judges over remarks to stop politicising cases before the Hague based court.

Presiding Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji warned in a strongly worded statement that they were fully aware of abuses directed at the court especially when major decisions are made. Osuji said the attacks were made to either support a conviction or acquittal, but in the long run ended

up undermining the work of the judges and the authority of the court. He regretted that some commentaries appearing in the media amounted to insults against the court and judges. The leaders from the ruling coalition said they have always respected the court, but were jolted to action by its decision to admit “backdoor

evidence recanted by witnesses.” “We want the ICC to understand that respect is earned. When the court violates basic tenets of international law and its own statute by orchestrating the introduction of rules midway through a trial, then goes ahead to enforce them retrospectively, how do they expect

any respect?” posed the Jubilee Coalition MPs. They said the judges’ reaction showed that they had panicked about Gatundu MP Moses Kuria’s confession on witness coaching. Kuria stoked the fire when he revealed he was involved in procuring and coaching witnesses who were possibly later enlisted by former ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo. “For the record, on Friday, Kenyan parliamentarians from Cord and Jubilee petitioned both the Assembly of State Parties and the United Nations Security Council to without any further delay set up and operationalise the independent oversight mechanism envisaged in Article 112(4) and to immediately conduct an inquiry into the Kenyan cases and specifically the matters of witness procurement, bribery and coaching that have bedevilled the cases from their commencement, and which have recently been corroborated by critical actors,” read the statement by the Jubilee Coalition leaders. At least 187 legislators have signed a petition calling for the case against Ruto and journalist Joshua arap Sang to be halted and witnesses recruitment process investigated. who want the president to address the current cash crunch in the country. “The President must address the cash crunch and the dwindling tax collection,” Njuki said. Orengo criticised the Jubilee administration for focusing their energies on the ICC case facing Ruto instead of addressing the tough economic challenges which he said should be the primary focus of the government. “As much as we want our Deputy President to be free, the lives of people of Kenya takes precedence over that of an individual, the focus should be on national issues,” he said. “There are national issues that need the government’s urgent attention, the education sector is not fully fixed, corruption is everywhere, our economy is not doing well among other things, engaging in political rallies will not help this country,” Orengo said. Muthama said the government is more focused on silencing the Opposition than improving the living standards of the ordinary Kenyans.

“If an opposition legislator criticises the government, it’s termed hate speech, this is a clear demonstration of a government that has failed in its core mandate,” said Muthama. Cheptumo called on President Kenyatta to assure the country of the policies his government is putting in place to address the country’s dwindling economic fortunes. President Kenyatta is expected to address the nation tomorrow during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium. Nairobi regional coordinator Njoroge Ndirangu while releasing the program for the celebrations asked members of the public to be seated by 8am. “The gates will open at 7am and close at 9am. The President is expected to arrive by 10.00 am,” Mr Ndirangu said today at Nyayo House. He said hawking will not be allowed into the stadium and that security has been beefed up. At least two heroes and heroines from each of the 47 counties will be celebrated at the event alongside independence fighters.

The Party of National Unity (PNU) has today disowned Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, saying the MP was not working for it when he procured ICC witnesses as the has since claimed. While speaking today morning on Citizen TV former PNU Deputy Treasurer Nderitu Mureithi and George Nyamweya, the party’s former campaign manager said Kuria was not working at the behest of PNU. “The Gatundu South MP was not working at the behest of PNU. If he procured witnesses for Waki Commission or Kriegler Commission or the International Criminal Court as he purports, he did so in his own capacity and not for PNU,” Nyamweya said. “At no time did we at PNU employ Kuria, he’s making the fixing claims in his private capacity. We are in a mess as a country and right now we should be focused on how to get out,” said Nyamweya. Mureithi said Kuria’s claims should be treated as personal views. “He should take personal responsibility for the claims. There is no time PNU engaged him to be the spokesman,” said Mureithi. On Friday, PNU leader Jeremiah

Kioni absolved the party from sponsoring anyone to procure witnesses, saying anyone who did so at that particular time was doing so in his private capacity and not on behalf of the party. “PNU never procured any witness to fix anybody, therefore anybody who has confessed that he was involved

in the process, did so in his private capacity. We have records as a party and anyone can check our officials at that time,” he said. The party warned against the ICC fixing claims, saying such utterances are heightening emotions in the country.

Give our people IDs, Wajir leaders tell government Wajir residents led by Senator Abdirahman Hassan and MP Abdillahi Diriye (Wajir South) have vowed to petition the government over the issuance of national Identification cards to residents. The leaders said they are not happy with the slow pace at which the IDs are distributed to residents and has urged the National government to lift the ban on issuance of the IDs imposed in 2012. They said unnecessary restrictions imposed by the Immigration department has made it difficult for Garissa, Wajir and Mandera residents to get the important document. “The national government imposed a ban on issuance of IDs in 2012, and since this important documents has never been issued to our people, it has made it hard for them to access important government services,” said Hassan.

RIB CRACKING: Pope Francis with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle when the pontiff visited the United States recently. The Holy Father is expected to visit Kenya next month.

All is set for Pope Francis’ Apostolic Voyage to Kenya after the Vatican released the official itinerary for his first visit to Africa as Pope. During the three-day Kenya visit, the Pope is expected to visit a Catholic Parish in Nairobi’s Kangemi neighbourhood. The Pope is expected to visit St Joseph the Worker Parish on Friday from 8.30am and spend one and half hours where he will meet residents and faithful. The schedule indicates that he will arrive in Nairobi on Wednesday evening and then hold a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Nairobi. He will also spend half-an-hour with government officials and diplomats who

have been invited to the meeting at the presidential residence. Apart from being the Head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis is also the Head of the Vatican State, a little city-state in Rome, Italy that serves as the headquarters of the Catholic Church. It is about 20 years since Kenya hosted a Roman Catholic Church pontiff. Pope John Paul II visited the country in 1995, where he held meetings with President Daniel arap Moi. The climax of his visit was at Nairobi’s Uhuru Park where thousands of Catholic faithful attended mass. Pope Francis will preside over another such mass at the same venue with more than 1.5 million

Catholics expected to attend. The Catholic Church is the largest denomination in Kenya with an estimated 14 million faithful. “We would have loved each of the 14 million Catholics to attend but it is impossible,” spokesman of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops David Omwoyo said. On Thursday 26, the Holy Father will hold an interdenominational meeting with religious leaders at the residence of the Apostolic Nuncio before heading to the Uhuru Park Papal Mass. The Pope will then head to St Mary’s School in Lavington where he will hold another meeting with the clergy, religious men and women, and seminarians. Pope

A press release by the Judiciary indicates that the draft is now ready for scrutiny and discussion by members of public and interested parties. “We now wish to circulate it widely and open it up for input from all quarters,” said Barbara Ojoo, head of the Secretariat. The draft

will be discussed at stakeholders forums organised by the Attorney General’s office, KLRC and the Judiciary The Draft Tribunal Bill, 2015 was developed by the Judiciary Working Committee on Transition and Restructuring of Tribunals and the Kenya Law Reforms Commission-led taskforce on Transition of Tribunals constituted by the Attorney General.

Francis will then leave for the United Nations office in Nairobi. The Pope will conclude his visit on November 27, after addressing a meeting of young people at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani where he will also meet with all the Catholic Bishops in Kenya. Pope Francis will then head to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where President Kenyatta will host a farewell ceremony in his honour before he departs for Entebbe, Uganda. While in Uganda, the Pope is expected to visit the Anglican and Catholic Martyrs’ Shrines in Namugongo, Uganda and a refugee camp in the Central African Republic.

KICC set to open to doors in counties Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), in a public and private partnership drive together with county governments, is set to establish more meeting venues across the country. This is aimed at attracting more investments and decongest the ever-busy capital convention centre. The KICC board chairman Omingo Magara has said that several counties including Meru, Kisumu and Turkana have signed memorandums of understanding with KICC to kick-start the initiative. “We are out of the capital talking to the counties to partner with us in a bid to put up spacious conference centres outside Nairobi,” said Mr Magara in a press release to the media. Tensions rise in Balkans as migrant numbers grow Tensions are building among thousands of migrants heading north through Balkan states as their route to Western Europe is stalled by new controls. Croatia had asked its northern neighbour Slovenia to accept 5,000 migrants daily, but Slovenia said it would only take half that number. The move has led to a build-up of people on Croatia’s border with Serbia. An official told the BBC that Croatia could run out of room in its transit camps within days. Buses crammed with people were backed up in Serbia on Sunday, and tempers flared between frustrated migrants and overstretched police officers. Overnight, many were forced to wait in the cold and the rain. Thousands of asylum seekers are travelling north through the Balkans, with most aiming to reach Austria, Germany and other EU states. Hungary, citing security concerns, has closed its borders with Serbia and Croatia, forcing migrants to switch to a slower route via Slovenia. Explaining Slovenia’s new restrictions on Sunday, Interior Ministry State Secretary Bostjan Sefic said its northern neighbour Austria was only accepting a maximum of 1,500 people a day. He said that Slovenia “cannot accept unlimited numbers of migrants if we know that they cannot continue their journey”. “If we would accept 5,000 migrants per day that would mean 35,000 would be in Slovenia

Arm mole count ‘can predict cancer risk’ Having more than 11 moles on one arm indicates a higher-thanaverage risk of skin cancer or melanoma, research suggests. Counting moles on the right arm was found to be a good indicator of total moles on the body. More than 100 indicates five times the normal risk. The study, published in the British Journal of Dermatology, used data from 3,000 twins in the UK. GPs could use the findings to identify those most at risk, it said. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer affecting more than 13,000 people in the UK each year. It develops from abnormal moles, so the risk of being diagnosed with a melanoma is linked to the number of moles a patient has. Researchers from King’s College London studied a large group of female twins over a period of eight years, collecting information on skin type, freckles and moles on their bodies.

After repeating the exercise on a smaller group of around 400 men and women with melanoma, they came up with a quick and easy way to assess the risk of skin cancer. Females with more than seven moles on their right arm had nine times the risk of having more than 50 on their whole body. Those with more than 11 on their right arm were more likely to have more than 100 on their body in total, meaning they were at a higher risk of developing a melanoma. The findings could help GPs to identify those with an increased risk of developing a melanoma. Lead author Simone Ribero, of the department of twin research and genetic epidemiology at King’s, said: “The findings could have a significant impact for primary care, allowing GPs to more accurately estimate the total number of moles in a patient extremely quickly via an easily accessible body part.”

Naura rape victim denies changing mind on abortion A pregnant Somali woman who was taken to Australia after allegedly being raped on Nauru has denied changing her mind about seeking an abortion. The woman, an asylum seeker, had been allowed to enter Australia for a termination, which is illegal in Nauru. But in a note to Australian media, she said she did not see a doctor before being suddenly returned to the migrant detention centre on Friday. Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton strongly denied her allegation. He had previously said that on arriving in Australia she decided by herself not to end her pregnancy. Under Australia’s asylum policy, any undocumented migrants trying to reach the country by boat are intercepted and held in centres on Nauru and Manus Island, Papua New Guinea. The woman - who is only known by her pseudonym Abyan - had asked to be flown to Australia

for an abortion. Mr Dutton said in a statement that on her arrival she had decided against having an abortion so was returned to Nauru. “The information I have is that the woman in question changed her mind about seeking a termination and was deemed fit to fly,” the minister was quoted as saying on Saturday. But in her first public comments since arriving on Nauru, the woman dismissed the claim. In the hand-written statement - seen by the Sydney Morning Herald and Guardian Australia - she said: “I have been very sick. I have never said that I did not want a termination. “I never saw a doctor. I saw a nurse at the clinic but there was no counselling.” She also said she saw another nurse, but did not have an interpreter and was not allowed to talk to her lawyer. “Please help me,” the statement said.

Banks, telcos initiatives target schools Local banks and telecommunication companies have embarked on a series of initiatives to support education across the country. As businesses and financial institutions scramble to make their mark in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), students, teachers and communities are set to benefit from facility upgrades and internet connections among other development drives. Telcos such as

Airtel and Safaricom have played an important role in supporting education across the country as they seek to build their brands and create a positive public image to boost their popularity among consumers. Among the beneficiaries of these initiatives is Madamani Primary School in Kilifi County, which is set to record a higher enrollment rate following the rehabilitation

of its learning facilities by KCB Foundation. The 52-year-old community school is the latest beneficiary of My School, My Community project, which is part of the wider KCB Foundation Education programme that seeks to improve access and quality of education for needy students through provision of scholarships, mentorship programs, learning materials and

infrastructure development. “Our current population stands at about 600 pupils, down from about 1,200 pupils ten years ago. We foresee our former pupils returning as a result of the improved learning environment,” said Stephen Charo, the school head teacher. Speaking during the commissioning of the rehabilitated classrooms, KCB Foundation Programme Manager Pauline Ndonga said

since its inception, the Foundation has pumped over Sh200 million into the education sector to ensure children access basic education amenities. “We are complementing government’s efforts in ensuring that children across the country can access basic education. Further, we believe in development through shared value,” said the KCB Foundation manager.

ACCESS new act Who is MC Mike? Many people knew me before as Mikeshizle the rapper because I used to be a rap and dancehall artiste. But then I crossed over to being an MC. Is this your dream career? I studied electronics and later on electrical and computer maintenance but this is a calling, it is a path I am passionate about and want to pursue fully. How did you get into the music and entertainment industry? I started music back in 2010 with tracks like Lipua Lipua and Reggae Dance. In 2013 I quit secular music and started

emceeing in wedding ceremonies and events. Later I gave my life to Christ and went the gospel way. That is how I became a gospel events MC and a gospel music artiste. How has this path been? I have steered many gospel events in Kenya as an emcee which has really helped me to be who I am today, in 2014 I got back into music and up to date I have released three gospel songs; Holly Day, Ntakusifu and Yesu Malo . It has not been easy but with determination, the sky is the limit. What are you passionate about apart from emceeing and gospel music? I have always involved myself in charity work and projects (helping the less fortunate in the society) and campaigning against drug abuse among youths especially in Mombasa and through that hard work, self-determination and being faithful in serving the Lord through my talents, the favor of the Lord has been upon me. What are your future plans? I am focused on continuing with the music projects that I have begun, I am not quitting anytime soon and will still be emceeing for gospel events.

King Kaka and Rich Mavoko release lini video King Kaka has released his fifth video, Lini featuring Rich Mavoko off his fourth album, Legend of Kaka. The song is about a man who has not seen his girlfriend in a while because she lives in Dar es Salaam while he is in Nairobi. King Kaka and Rich Mavoko have previously worked together on a song, Njoo and cultivated a good relationship since.

Gilbert and Olivia say ‘I do’ T he saying a man must try rings true to Gilbert Ogetti. He chased Olivia Machera literally and persistently for almost one year until she finally agreed to a date.. In this universal cat and mouse game, men are advised to follow their heart to wherever it takes them despite the circumstances and Gilbert can attest to the benefit of doing this, judging by how he says he managed to steal Olivia’s heart, “Something kept telling me to go talk to her even though she was many a time unresponsive,” he tells X Access. Gilbert and Olivia who initially met at Nairobi Central SDA Church got engaged early this year after a well-planned proposal which elicited strong emotions especially on Olivia’s part as Gilbert elaborates cheekily. “It was unexpected and I did it during a friend’s birthday. She cried, but they were tears of joy.” This was early this year in

February and when the reality of the situation finally sunk in, the couple immediately got down to the wedding preparations which, given the thrill, made time seem to fly by until it was finally Gilbert and Olivia’s wedding day last weekend. Being Adventists, the couple was wedded on Sunday at Maxwell SDA church, having settled on the colors white and peach for their wedding theme. The groom wore a navy blue suit with a white shirt and a peach colored bow tie while his bride walked down the aisle in a snow white mermaid dress looking like a princess straight off a fairy tale story book. The bridesmaids equally stood out in long peach dresses with lace detail on the upper half. Unlike common practice, Gilbert and Olivia’s wedding did not involve the casual dancing done by the bridal party in

preparation for the bride’s arrival in church. Here, things were straightforward and in no time, the couple was united in accordance with the Adventist practice. Winding up of the church service meant it was time to take the party to the reception venue at the Karen Blixen grounds where friends and relatives engaged the bridal party in vigorous dancing, perhaps in compensation for the lack of a dance session during the church service. As is tradition with Kenyan weddings, the reception ceremony focused on several speeches, gift presentation and cutting of the cake which for Gilbert and Olivia, was a seven tier fruitcake decorated with their colour scheme. When we asked the couple about their honeymoon plans, this is what they had to say: “We are going somewhere far and exotic. None of us has ever been there!” Congratulations to the newlyweds.

Charity Mwangi is Miss World Kenya 2015! Charity Mwangi is Miss World Kenya 2015! Margaret Muchemi the beauty from Kajiado County was on Saturday morning named first runners-up winning Sh100,000 while Murang’a’s 23 year old Olive Waithera was the second runners-up pocketing a cash prize of Sh50,000 at the 2015 Miss World Kenya beauty pageant. Charity Mwangi, was crowned Miss World Kenya 2015 beating nine other finalists to drive home in a brand new car and a cash prize. The Miss World Kenya gala dinner staged at the Weston Hotel in Nairobi saw Ms Idah Nguma relinquish her crown to the incoming queen Miss Mwangi. In a show of evening wear, African wear crowned with a review on what the beauty queens have been engaging in over the past one year, the show was a manifestation of both beauty and brains. Above all the glitz and glamour, it emerged that the beauty queens were engaging in a series of ‘beauty with a purpose’ projects within their Counties and nation at large. Judged by Janet Mulei, Borna Nyaoke, Cecilia Mwangi, Ben Lyon and Robert Burale, the glamorous strutting, dancing and composure saw a great showcase of talent. As the models took to the stage, the one and only Jazz Maestro

Hellon was keen on keeping their strides in sync with his sax tunes blowing away the crowd who cheered on the contestants. With the judges taking a break to tally the scores in the quest for the fairest of them all, visiting Jamaican group Morgan Heritage took to the stage with a stunning performance. Their renditions echoed through the audience as reggae music fans sang along. In the end, 23 year old Kenyatta University student Charity Mwangi was crowned the official Kenyan representative to the global pageant to be held in China later this year.

LOSES HIS VOICE ON STAGE

T

he much-hyped concert of the legendary crooner Freddie Jackson took place on Saturday night to a half-filled venue but enthusiastic audience. Despite the artiste struggling to find his voice projection and not living up to his legendary persona, his songs were luckily very familiar to the audience and they simply sang along to every song. Little did people now but the event promoter, Ralph Nzomo, was actually celebrating his 50th birthday in style by bringing the crooner. The night started with a two-hour nostalgic mix of ballads and slow jams by David “DJ D-Lite” Muriithi, better known for his nostalgia nights at Mercury Lounge. This set the

mood for the rest of the night. Maina Kageni then took control of the stage as he introduced the opening act Kidum. Only recently back from his extensive European tour, Kidum once again reminded the audience why he is still one of the most sought after artistes in East Africa today. He swayed the audience like a pied piper and at one point even got the VIP section dancing to Mugithi in an apparent bid to show Freddie Jackson a Kenyan welcome. Freddie Jackson took to the stage shortly after 10pm to a standing ovation. The anticipation was thick in the air and was felt throughout the venue. Freddie Jackson proceeded to greet the audience in

Kiswahili and was full of comical antics. At one point he told the crowd to get ready for ‘shika shika time’, which is a reference to the part of a night when ballads were played and people ‘slow-danced’ in the past. However after a few songs it was very obvious that the former chart-topper was struggling to find his voice and his energy seemed to dip at times despite being supported by a very able band. Unable to hit the high notes at times, Freddie Jackson was forced to use the crowd to sing-along albeit much to their delight. The concert was followed by an after-party at the Simba saloon hosted yet again by DJ D-Lite who rocked the night up to the wee hours.

an epic MashuJaa pool party The Mashujaa Pool Party went down this weekend at Crayfish Camp Naivasha. This was the second edition of the star studded event From comedians and MCs, Oga Obinna, DR Ofweneke, Owago and Jalang’o. Artistes, Frasha, Buganya, Kristoff, Khaligraph, Octopizzo and King Kaka. The show started with the Deejay sets. DJ Redbone shut the place down with her set. The MCs for the night were keeping

the crowd hyped and amped up for the performances. Nebulazz started out the performances by performing his latest song, Zambarurera with Obinna. Next came on King Kaka who in his usual style made the crowd go wild. However when he was performing his latest song, Lini which he released last week there was a snag at the Deejay booth. This did not go well with the crowd but King Kaka being a performer brushed it off and

continued with his performance. X Access later learnt that DJ Hypnotiq had pressed the reverse on the decks to snag the performance making King’s Deejay, DJ Jr pissed off. DJ Hypnotiq had earlier intimated to King Kaka’s manager that he wanted to be the one playing for Kaka. But seeing that there was no need, Hypnotiq got pissed off and hit reverse on the decks and left in a huff. Diva! Khaligraph Jones was next on

A tipsy Kristoff came on stage and performed his best and ended the performance by doing his hit, Dandia which he invited Frasha and Kaka to help him carry through. The best was saved for last when Octopizzo got on stage after Kristoff without his lighting shoes this time. It was definitely a night to remember as consumers were treated to thrilling music. Consumers were also given opportunities to win as the Guinness Referees were ‘booking’ consumers with either a red card or yellow card. Three lucky winners were selected and won Sh5, 000, 10,000 and 20,000 respectively. JuaCali was later joined by Mejja where they performed all night long.

Farmers in hurry to save crop before El Niño MONDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2015

Farmers are working tirelessly to save their last crop as the rains, brought about by the El Niño currents, begin to fall. As clouds gather in random clusters across the country, maize farmers from Rift Valley and the Western region are busy harvesting their premature maize crop, ostensibly to grab a few combs before the speculated floods wreak havoc on their yield. These two regions form Kenya’s

therise KenGen shares in impressive rise In contrast to the generally bearish trend dominating trading at the NSE, KenGen shares recorded an impressive 10.98 per cent price increase over the course of the week following the release of strong results for the year ended June 30, 2015. KenGen announced a 20.5 per cent increase in installed capacity and a 15.4 per cent increase in units of electricity sold. As a result of the new 280MW geothermal plant in Olkaria and Ngong wind projects, the company registered a 308 per cent increase in after tax profits as revenue increased and the company benefited from a tax credit from capital allowances. Profit before tax increased by 109 per cent as compared to a year prior.

thefall ADSS continues its losing streak at NSE Logistics and support services firm Atlas Development & Support Services (ADSS) remained the top losing stock at the NSE, having posted a decline of 19.35 per cent over the course of the week’s trading. Having shed nearly a fifth of their value in the week, ADSS shares ended the week at a price of Sh2.50 from their previous closing price of Sh3.10. So far into the year, ADSS shares have fallen by 79.2 per cent. The company’s performance was negatively affected by the difficult operating environment that has taken hold in the oil & gas industry. ADSS has been looking to diversify its revenue streams by targeting new sectors and regions. The firm announced that while earnings over the first 6 months of 2015 were in line with expectations, a reduced contract base and restructuring costs saw the firm record comprehensive losses. breadbasket and produce a combined 2.5 tonnes of maize. This represents almost 70 per cent of what the country produces, according to the National Cereals and Produce Board. While the premature harvesting of maize, the country’s staple food, presents early signs of food insecurity, the question is what farmers can do with their yield to minimize the injurious effects of early harvesting. The current market price of a 115kg

bag of green maize in most Kenya’s wholesale markets is between Sh2,000 and Sh2,500. While various people around the country make a variety of delicacies from green maize, its demand is relatively low compared to dry maize, which is ground to make flour. A 90kg bag of dry maize goes for between Sh2,500 and Sh3,000. In addition, green maize is bulky and perishable and is, therefore, not commercially preferred.

Yet, even the few farmers who managed to harvest dried maize are not safe because as they deal with post-harvest challenges. The East African Grain Council estimates that Kenya loses Sh3 billion annually in post-harvest challenges, most of which are brought about by poor drying and storage techniques. The looming El-Nino downpour will likely make things worse as it promises to make the drying of grains a challenge. But there is respite,

coming from non-state agency, Acdivoca, which recently launched a locally-developed drying machine with the ability to dry half a tonne of grain in four hours. The drier which is made locally and cost Sh125, 000 according to Sophie Walker, the Chief of Party at Acdivoca, is among the few innovations agricultural stakeholders can depend on to counter the ravages of post harvest waste, which is estimated to be 1.3b tonnes globally by FAO.

MuSTREAD My Traitor’s Heart — by Rian Malan

My Traitor’s Heart is a non-fiction autobiography of Rian Malan, an Afrikaner who flees South Africa during the Apartheid era after witnessing the deadly outcome of the silent war between races in South Africa. Eight years later, he returns home with a new found inspiration and clarity, analyzing deeply the effects of the Apartheid war in his country such as hatred and suffering as well as emotional trauma on both sides of the races line brought about mostly by prominent and rampant cases of murder. Ultimately, he finds a way around the civil war and attains emotional healing and redemption from his guilt of having fled his country before.

YOURSAY ICC bashing spells doom for country ahead of 2017 After the 2007/08 postelection violence, politicians were scared stiff whenever the International Criminal Court (ICC) was named, and for sometimes, Kenyans thought at long last a solution to poll chaos was in the offing. The turn of events

after six Kenyans were listed in the famous Ocampo list as those who bore the greatest responsibility, the investigations and the current positions taken by politicians are worrying. The move by Jubilee leaders to organise prayer rallies for Deputy

President William Ruto and former journalist Joshua Sang has put the country and ICC at a war path. It is also apparent that politicians no longer respect the court and are prepared to reject the outcome of the cases before it. — Sherryl Mbogo

Leaders in campaign mood as polls approach Kenya is already in an election mood going by the frequent rallies spearheaded by Jubilee leaders, however, it seems the country has forgotten what we went through after 2007 General Election. Politicians have abdicated their roles and forgotten that

they were elected to serve the people and not to protect the interests of their masters and friends. The debate of who fixed Ruto at the ICC is to me a non-issue which should be left to rest bearing in mind that the case are before the judges. It is unfortunate that Kenyans’

interests have taken a back seat and no one seems to care. Instead corruption, tribalism and balkanised counties have replaced service delivery. The media has not done any better with skewed reporting. — Hillary Megeka

Something must be wrong with our economy Who is fooling who in the current Kenya Economic debacle? The Treasury CS insists the country is not in a financial crisis, yet the borrowing scale stands higher than the revenue collection, the Kenya shillings depreciates day and night, the contractors and suppliers knock Treasury’s doors every morning demanding millions of shillings the government owes them in vain. President Uhuru Kenyatta should tell

the nation the truth on the dwindling economy so that Kenyans can know with certainty the direction the country is headed. It is absurd to hear of the same economically limping government planning to buy thousands of bar soaps at a cost of Sh30, 000 each, sanitary towels each at Sh6, 000 for the El Nino disaster. What a joke? — Son of God-Nairobi

In Kenya, it is the haves versus the have-nots

Kenya comprises only two tribes, the first being the haves. Members of the tribe are known for extravagance. They buy one bar of soap for Sh37,500, curtains worth Sh7.8 million and their wheelbarrows cost Sh109,000 each. They also get a mileage allowance and entertainment allowance worth millions of shillings. Members of this tribe wield power and determine their salaries. The second tribe is the have-nots, they are the majority and

include the poorly paid professionals, police officers, who offer security to the first tribe, doctors and nurses and even teachers. They have to go on strike to demand a pay rise which is not guaranteed. They fight and kill each other in support of the first tribe members. Members of the first tribe view members of the second tribe as illiterate, ignorant foolish and easily gullible. — Anonymous

Leaders should pray for economy not ICC Faced with a collapsing economy, Zambian President Edgar Lungu yesterday called for a national prayer day and fasting for the whole country. In 2001, the then acting Fiji Prime Minister called a national week of prayer and fasting. Dramatic changes

have since been recorded in that country economically, socially and politically. In the Bible, after Jonah was spewed out of the belly of the whale, he reached Nineveh where upon hearing God’s warning the King commanded a national

prayer. It is time local political and religious leaders called for such kind of prayers to save the country which is clearly headed into a lurch. This would be much better than the farcical ICC showboating we have been treated to. — Wuod Oindo Kwach

SPORTS BRIEFS Ex- Spurs defender joins FIFA presidential race Former Tottenham defender Ramon Vega consider vying for Fifa presidential election. Football’s world governing body’s president Sepp Blatter and vice-president Michel Platini have both been suspended for 90 days amid corruption allegations. Fifa’s executive committee meets tomorrow to discuss whether to postpone the February’s presidential election. “I come without baggage and I have substantial experience from both football and in finance,” Vega said. The former Switzerland international, who also played for Celtic and Watford, has worked in finance since retiring from football in 2004. Ex-Spurs team-mate David Ginola failed to secure the necessary backing to stand in May’s Fifa presidential election, which was won by Blatter days before he announced he would stand down. Vega told BBC Sport he will decide over the next three to five days if he is to stand. Uefa president Platini and Prince Ali bin al-Hussein have already announced their candidacy, with Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain also expected to do so before the October 26 deadline. Former Trinidad and Tobago midfielder David Nakhid launched his campaign to be president on Sunday.

Wallabies reach semis after close Scotland win Bernard Foley scored Australia’s late penalty to snatch a Rugby world Cup semi-final berth from Scotland in a thrilling match that ended 35-34 in favour of the Wallabies at Twickenham. In a pulsating eight-try match, Scotland’s Mark Bennett’s interception try with seven minutes to go seemed to have sealed one of the great World Cup upsets for Scotland, who enjoyed the “home” support after hosts England were eliminated at the group stages. But with time running out, referee Craig Joubert called an offside when replays seemed to indicate the ball had come off a Wallaby player and Foley stroked over the three points to steal the game away. At the final whistle, Joubert ran for the tunnel to a deafening chorus of boos, Scotland’s players and vast support shattered by the cruel finale in yet another Great Britain upset at the world games in their home soil. The South African official was labelled ‘a disgrace’ after he sprinted down the tunnel at the final whistle, refusing to shake hands with the players before having a plastic bottle thrown in his direction. Scotland’s defeat means that for the

first time in history, there will be no northern hemisphere team in the semifinals. Australia will now meet Argentina in next weekend’s semis. Australia dominated the early exchanges, and after Foley almost wriggled across the tryline his centre Tevita Kuridrani bounced through Tommy Seymour’s ineffective tackle, drew the last defender and put Adam Ashley-Cooper away into the right-hand corner. But Scotland struck back through a Greig Laidlaw penalty and then roared into a shock lead when Peter Horne darted through a badly defended ruck after a series of muscular drives from his forwards. Laidlaw’s conversion and another penalty extended the advantage to 13-5, before Kurtley Beale’s long misspass freed Drew Mitchell on the left to score Australia’s second try. Foley again could not land his conversion, and when Scotland’s forwards won a scrum penalty, Laidlaw took the lead back to six. But as a breathless first half came to a crescendo, Australia kicked a penalty to the

corner, set up the rolling maul off the line-out and shoved Michael Hooper over the line. The other quarter final match between Wales and South Africa was also characterised by drama after Fourie du Preez’s 75th-minute try ended battling Wales’ World Cup dream in a colossal quarter-final. Wales led going into the final 10 minutes but finally succumbed after enduring a second-half battering. Fly-half Handre Pollard kicked five penalties and a dropgoal for the Springboks. Wales’ Dan Biggar scored 14 points and created the chance for Gareth Davies to score his fifth try of the tournament. Veteran scrum-half Du Preez had to be persuaded to play in the tournament by South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer after a series of career-threatening injuries, but repaid the faith with a moment of coolness in a tumultuous atmosphere. South Africa now face New Zealand in the last four after the world champions annihilated France 62-13 in the other quarter.

HAND-OFF: Wallabies Bernard Foley escapes a tackle from a Scotland player during yesterday’s Rugby World Cup quarter final match at Twickenham. The wallabies scored a last minute penalty to beat Scotland 35-34 in a tightly contested tie.

ArsenAl fAce mighty BAyern in A do or die chAmpions leAgue encounter Arsenal will face Bayern Munich in a must-win Uefa Champion League match tomorrow night at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has told his side to go all out in attack if they are to stand any chance of resurrecting their Champions League dream with victory. Arsenal have lost all their two opening matches and they must beat Bayern home and away and must not lose the other two fixtures to avoid crashing out at the group stages.

The Gunners have yet to experience three Champions’ League group-stage defeats, but will be the underdogs at home on Tuesday despite a good run of form that include six goals in two Premier League games, including a 3-0 thrashing of rivals Manchester United and Alexis Sanchez inspired 3-0 win over Watford which places them second on the table Shock defeats in the hands of Dynamo Kiev and Olympiakos have left Arsenal looking for a win against the German champions to reduce the likelihood of a

disastrous early exit from a competition that Wenger had ambitions of winning at the start of the season. Arsenal’s situation invoke 2003-04 memories when they executed an unlikely passage to the knockout stages despite being rock bottom after three games, with only a point, but a visit by record breaker Robert Lewandowski and Bayern’s nine match win is a strong statement to the host who will have Laurent Koscielny back from injury. Unlike Arsenal, Chelsea face Dainamo Kieve away in Ukraine.

Teams battle for Top 8 slots as league ends hika United need a win and a draw in their remaining three fixtures to seal a place in next year’s Top 8 as the SportPesa Premier League nears an end. Thika ended Ulinzi Stars seven game winning streak with a clinical 2-0 in a Premier League match at Afraha Stadium yesterday. The win saw them move closer to securing a spot in the knock-out tournament-a preserve for the first eight teams in the premier league. Thika are currently ninth on the table with 35 points. They must beat Chemelil Sugar, who were held to a barren draw by Western Stima in their next encounter to cement their position in the competition next year. Thika must, however be wary of Ushuru, Sony Sugar, Mathare United and Stima who are breathing fire

behind them and any slip up would see them relinquish the chance of playing at the league cup competition next year. Ulinzi stays second behind leaders and champions in waiting Gor Mahia with 54 points Thika’s win over Ulinzi ended their two goal winless streak on the weekend that also saw Nairobi City Stars put to hold their journey back to relegation after they beat KCB in the other match. Thika rallied back despite an injury scare from Dennis Odhiambo, who clashed with Ulinzi’s forward Kevin Amwayi but still managed to beat the host for the first time in three years before their home fans. This was a revenge for Thika who lost 2-1 the opening leg of this fixtures. Vincent Omumbo gave the visitors the lead in the 30th minute from

the spot before Kennedy Otieno made it 2-0 after the break to take three points. Muhoroni went joint third with Sofapaka after coming from behind to force a 1-1 draw with Ushuru FC at the Ruaraka Grounds. Ushuru remain 8th and two ahead of Thika United. A draw between AFC Leopards and Mathare United seemed to have assured them a place in the top 8. Mathare will have themselves to blame after dominating the proceedings but had nothing to show for it after 90minutes. Mathare defender Noah Abich and Eric Johanna of Leopards were each denied by the posts. The result consolidated Leopards’ 6th place on the log as they moved to 40 points while Mathare broke into the top 10 above Sony Sugar who have a game in hand.
