ands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu is in the eye of a storm as Kenyans wait to find out if she will finally name the developer who attempted to grab Lang’ata Road Primary School playground. Ngilu cast herself into the limelight yesterday when she threatened to reveal the name of the grabber said to be a powerful individual and then resign from Government. She was reacting to an

ultimatum issued by her Interior colleague Joseph Nkaissery who gave her until end of today to publicly identify the grabber. “I have specific instructions, and I want to tell my colleague Hon Ngilu and NLC Chairman to ensure they tell Kenyans by today or tomorrow who are the grabbers, and if they fail, they must know there are consequences,” Nkaissery said yesterday.

But Ngilu, who was overseeing the demolition of a perimetre wall that had been erected round the school playground, quickly shot back. “I believe there is a name behind the name, we shall soon reveal the names behind the name. By the way, if the President continues to push me, I will name and resign,” Ngilu was quoted by the Star as saying. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

South Sudan rivals finally pen peace deal South Sudan peace talks received a major turning point as rival factions of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) signed an agreement aimed at re-unifying the party. Intense efforts spearheaded by regional leaders, which saw the Arusha meeting extend late into the night, marks a turning point for the conflict. The signing ceremony at Ngurdoto Hotel in Arusha was witnessed by regional leaders, including host Presidents Jakaya Kikwete, Uhuru Kenyatta (Kenya), Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), and South African Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa. South Sudan President Salva Kiir, former vice President Riek Machar and Deng Alor Kuol signed the deal. The agreement which was signed during an SPLM Intra-Party Dialogue Summit puts the young African nation back onto the path of peace. Among issues agreed by rival parties include the restoration of peace and stability and a demand for SPLM leadership to make a public apology to the people of Sudan for atrocities committed. Under the agreement, SPLM leadership is required to transform the political party by formulating and embracing policies that allow for a culture of

tolerance and ideals of democracy to take root. SPLM leaders were also urged to formulate and implement policies that will abolish tribalism, sectarianism and militarism in all spheres of political life. They will also be required to open up space for the achievement of a political environment that promotes genuine political pluralism. Those who may have participated in atrocities during the conflict will not be allowed to hold public office. SPLM leaders agreed to implement and comply with all provisions of the cessation of hostilities and use the Arusha Intra-Party Dialogue and IGAD mediation process in Addis Ababa to expedite the conclusion of the peace deal to end the conflict. Political leaders will also be required to develop and implement a comprehensive programme for national unity, peace, reconciliation, healing and to promote harmony among the South Sudan people. The three factional SPLM groups will also embrace reunification and reconciliation of party leadership and membership. Stress turns people into toddlers, research says

Locals of Kariobangi in Nairobi are demanding explanations from police after officers accidentally shot dead an elderly man in the area following a chase with suspected robbers. The deceased was shot dead as police chased a gang that had attacked and robbed an Mpesa shop in the area. Residents say the victim was an innocent pedestrian. The suspects managed to escape in the confusion that followed.

A study has found that having to cope with stressful tasks can reduce a person’s mental faculties to those of a small child. The study discovered that high levels of stress were found to lower the brain’s ability to think critically, reason, and make practical decisions. These are traits typically seen in small children who have to respond emotionally to situations they find difficult, the experts who carries out the research explain. Studies from Mindlab, a UK-based research firm, which carried out the study for healthcare providers Benenden Health, asked 200 volunteers to take part in mental agility trials. Neuroscientist, Dr David Lewis, Director of Mindlab, said: “When stressed, the focus of our attention tends to narrow and, if associated with strong emotions, we tend to act less rationally on occasions.” For the sake of the study, the group was split in half and 100 participants additionally took part in a series of stress-inducing tasks before and in-between the trials. The results ‘overwhelmingly’ showed that stressed participants were more likely to make a wrong decision.

The mystery surrounding the disappearance of International Criminal Court (ICC) witness Meshack Yebei further deepened today after DNA results conducted on a body previously claimed to be his turned negative. Earlier tests done through finger prints showed the body to be that of one Yusuf Hussein prompting further tests through DNA. And today, police handling the case said the DNA results showed 99 percent it the body belongs to Yusuf. “It is not Yebei, there is no doubt at all because the DNA results are out,” CID director Ndegwa Muhoro said, “The DNA has matched that of Yusuf Hussein.” The results had been handed over to the Divisional CID headquarters in Eldoret for onward transmission to Nairobi. Police had earlier ruled out the possibility of the body belonging to Yebei after finger print sample tests turned negative. Yusuf Hussein, a villager from Kaimosi, reportedly went missing on December 25, 2014 from Kapsabet town in Nandi County. His family is expected Thursday to pick up the body for burial, officials said. The earlier tests two weeks ago also

showed the body at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret was Yusuf. Yebei’s family, which claimed the body was that of their kin had indicated that it was not necessary to take DNA samples as it had positively identified him. The DNA results made public today morning came barely hours after Yebei’s family filed a suit at the Eldoret Law Courts on Wednesday restraining the government from releasing the body from the mortuary pending the release of the test results. The suit was filed before Eldoret Resident Magistrate Tom Olando. The body which is now under controversy was found floating in River Yala bridge on Kisumu-Eldoret road near Kapsabet Town in Nandi County. Yebei’s family then identified the body as that of their kin who went missing on December 28, 2014. According to the family, Yebei excused himself from a dispensary at Turbo to buy water for the sick child but never returned. Both the ICC prosecution and Deputy President William Ruto’s lawyer Karim Khan have asked for investigations on assumptions that the body discovered belonged to Yebei.

Several families were last night left homeless in a fire incident in Nairobi’s Kibera slums. The fire is said to have started from one of the affected structures before it spread fast to others. Police say no one was injured in the incident that took long to contain in Olympics area and those affected have urged for help to reconstruct their structures. The fire took almost two hours to contain and police say they are investigating the cause.

Women attacked, bank raided in obscure wave of city robberies Numerous gangs of criminals are on the loose, it appears. Two women were attacked and a bank raided as robbers continued with attacks in Nairobi. Three suspected carjackers were arrested in Pangani following a botched attack on a motorist. The gang had hijacked a woman from Kileleshwa and were escaping when police intercepted them. They were expected to be arraigned in court to face charges of robbery with violence. In another incident, a woman was robbed of jewelry and cash valued at Sh8 million in Muthaiga. Part of the jewelry robbed include gold and diamond chains, rings and watches. Police say the gang raided the home of Ms Adenan Devani as she slept Tuesday night and later grabbed the valuables before escaping. The woman was alone in the house and there was no guard around the compound. Police believe the gang was informed of the presence of the jewelry. The gang also grabbed unknown amount of money from the home. “She says there were other precious ornaments in the house that were robbed from her in the attack. We are pursuing the case,” said Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue. Elsewhere, police are looking for

a gang that raided Credit Bank in Kitengela, outskirts of Nairobi and robbed Sh6.5 million in an attack. The gang had posed as other customers on Saturday before they drew out their guns and ordered those present to lie down. Isinya OCPD Stephen Weda said the thugs ordered everybody to lie on the ground and grabbed the bank manager who they forced to open the strong room. “They then opened the safes and grabbed the money that was there and then escaped,” said the police boss. No injury was reported in the daytime attack, which is the latest after a long time. Police pursuing the case believe the gang had prior information on the presence of the cash before they attacked. No arrest has been made so far. A special team from Special Crimes Prevention Unit has been sent to the area to investigate the attack. Meanwhile, two suspected thugs were Tuesday night shot dead in Dandora area in a botched robbery and weapons found on them. The suspects had been attacking and robbing pedestrians when police were alerted. The officers say they recovered a mini Ceska from the suspects.

Govt wants action against bishop over false vaccine claims

SEE YOU IN COURT: Judicial Service Commission lawyer Paul Muite addressing the members of the press in 2013. The lawyer representing media houses has said they will be going to court after CAK canceled top broadcasters’ digital licenses.

Court battle looms large over suspended digital TV lincences Three of the country’s analogue television broadcasters KTN, NTV and Citizen have vowed to challenge in court a decision by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) to cancel their digital licenses. CAK yesterday announced it had withdrawn the permit allowing the three channels to carry their own signal on a digital platform. The regulator’s director general Francis Wangusi accused the three of running a misleading advert. “It is a gross violation of the legal and regulatory framework governing the sec-

tor,” he said. In the advert, the channels independently owned by Standard Group, the Nation Media Group and Royal Media Services respectively, told their viewers that both GoTV and Startimes were illegally airing their content and advised them to wait for their own digital boxes that will provide free to air content. “We do not think the advert was misleading or offensive in any way. We are surprised by the decision of the Communications Authority of Kenya,” said NMG chairman Wilfred Kiboro during a press confer-

ence to protest the withdrawal of their licences yesterday. “We are not going to let this go down and we will be going back to court,” Lawyer Paul Muite representing the media houses was quoted by the Standard today as having said. He threatened that they could proceed to the Paris-based International Intellectual Properties Rights Court if they do not get a fair hearing from local courts. The three local channels had been issued with the self-provisioning licence to help them carry their own content and develop their digital infrastructure. But

the withdrawal now means they will have to rely on other licensed signal distributors to air their content. Industry analysts suggest that the companies involved appear to be confused about whether they are content companies or infrastructure companies. “They have had since 2010 to figure it out and if you consider they publish their content on youtube and other digital channels, their argument seems, for lack of a better word ‘anaolgue’. They want to have their cake and eat it too, and the rhetoric against foreign investors was very naive.”

The government now wants the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board to institute disciplinary action against the Chairman of the Catholic Health commission Paul Kariuki for misleading Kenyans. Health Cabinet secretary James Macharia has said that Kariuki is doing a big injustice to Kenyan women by insisting the tetanus jab is laced with beta HCG that causes infertility. Mr. Macharia says the government will form a joint special committee that will include all stakeholders tasked with the responsibility of testing all vaccines in the Country before they are released to the public to stem such controversies. “We will form a 6-member com-

mittee, so that each time there is a new vaccine coming up, even if it is WHO approved, the committee will be carrying out those tests to make sure we don’t give a few individuals the chance to mislead Kenyans,” he added. In November last year, the bishops claimed that the vaccine, targeted to women of child-bearing age and not to men, was being administered in a campaign sponsored by the World Health Organisation and UNICEF that had been guarded by secrecy and deception. The bishops said they suspected the vaccine contained beta human chorionic gonadotropin, or beta HCG, which prevents women from becoming pregnant.

Eastlands matatus to go cashless by Feb 1 Matatu passengers on Nairobi’s Jogo Road may soon switch to cashless means of paying fares after five PSV Saccos on the route threatened to end cash payments by February 1. Ummoiner, Cbet, Compliant, ROG, and Oma pan to use the ‘MY1963’ cashlight fare system offered by Fibre Space in the settlement of fares. Fiber Space Limited General Manager Mwakio Ngale said the move has been driven by revenue losses that owners say amount to

more than 30 per cent of daily earnings. Registration of the card is free for passengers who only need a National Identification Card, valid phone number and date of birth information to create accounts. Users can load cash using M-Pesa at no extra cost. “As owners, we have provided point of sale terminals and technical support to fast-track adoption of the cards by passengers since owners were still recording losses of revenue on vehicles,” said Ngale.

Ngale said slow intake of cards was due to misinformation. The company has employed about 2000 youth known as activators to sell cards and inform the public on their use. “While matatu owners fully understand the need for the cashlight fare system, majority of passengers have shied away from embracing them due to limited information. With this partnership our activators will be in bus terminals explaining the details to passengers,” said Ngale.

Experts’ high ratings of Ebola won’t cost Africa DT Dobie drivers training what we thought, says WB Courses run by DT Dobie for drivers of Mercedes trucks have been rated by experts as having some of the highest global standards. Experts from Germany say the training complies with the world’s best practices by putting drivers a cut above the rest. Joe Mungai, in charge of truck driver training at DT Dobie said: “In line with the objectives of the training to make drivers more conscious of road safety and their responsibility for reducing fuel and maintenance costs we start with interactive

These encourage drivers to air views on careers and we show them that carrying out work in an efficient professional way will bring them job satisfaction.” “To cope with the developments D T Dobie acquired the services of Bernd Wiacker, a trainer from Daimler in Germany. He visited Nairobi in December to help us run a special five day course for customers’ driver trainers – which included participants from Mercedes Benz fleet owners in Kenya” Mungai said.

The economic impact of Ebola on African economies in 2015 will be less severe than previously thought, the World Bank says in a report. In the countries hit by the disease, the virus will lead to $1.6 billion (Sh147 billion) in lost economic growth this year, which is less than was initially projected. World Bank experts had estimated that if Ebola spreads to more countries, the cost for African economies could be as high as $6 billion (Sh550 billion) in lost growth.

The first Ebola outbreak in West Africa was reported 13 months ago when a Guinean toddler became infected with a fever, one of the first signs of the virus. It has spread within the region, killing more than 8,000 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. But countries like Nigeria, Mali and Senegal have eradicated it. Reuters reports that there are signs that the other affected countries are making progress in containing the disease.

The dark side of

MODEllInG L ights, camera, action…..is the impression many have of the lives of runway models. What we see is the glitz, glamour and beautifully designed clothes being showcased by some ‘perfect’models. But as the old adage goes, “all that glitters is not gold.” X Access went backstage to find out what happens when the lights are off and the cameras are not flashing. What we found out is not pretty. Debra Olande, who has been a runway model for three years, says she would not advise anyone to take up modelling as a career no matter how great its allure. “Modelling was my dream career,” she said. “I am living the reality now and I can tell you it is not even close to glamorous” Like any other newcomer model to the industry, Olande went ahead and auditioned with a modelling agency in. But she soon found out that the agencies were the enemy. “The funny thing about these auditions, when they pick you, you pay them. The money we are told is for creating a portfolio for you, with the promise of getting you more modelling jobs.

“I paid Sh3,000 (portfolio fee) when I was picked for a job and I was only paid Sh1,500 for the job. I never heard from the agency again” she lamented. Modelling agencies usually carry out auditions looking for potential candidates to join them. Some will ask for money, others will not. Those who get picked up will then undergo further trainin—for a fee of course— but not all of them will be registered under the agency once the training is done. And if they are registered, they are still not guaranteed jobs. As if the frustration is not enough, some agencies demand for sexual favours. “Some agents make sexual advances on models and if you don’t give you lose a deal,” says Diana Kinyua,a former model. Then comes the issue of payment when they are registered and do get jobs, which has proved to be a pain for many models. “I was signed by Warembo Modelling Agency and I would get modelling jobs but I did not like the pay, it was too little,” said Maureen Syokau, who has since given up on the runway and turned to commercial modelling. “I raised the issue with the agency

and they told me that it was the right amount. I did my own investigation and found out that they were ripping me off.” What usually happens is that when the agency get a modelling job from a fashion event organiser or designer, they agree on a fee and out of it the models are supposed to get 70 per cent. But this is not usually the case. “Since you are not in the room when the negotiations are made, you end up being short changed,” said Syokau. But as much as agency models have it rough, independent models face even bigger challenges. “The organisers have a tendency of taking advantage of us,” said Doreen Mariga, an independent model for six years

now. “We always get into fights with them and some arguments have even ended up in the courts because of unpaid fees.” “We got the organisers of a popular fashion event arrested two years ago over unpaid fees,” she said. “They had promised to pay us immediately after the show, and we signed the contracts. But the moment the show was over, they went missing. We reported them to the police and they were only released when they paid up.” Things have only gotten tougher for models as they are now made to do double work by some organisers. Other than the usual modelling, they are also made to sell the tickets prior to the event! “The contracts will stipulate that we have to sell tickets in order to

get paid,” said Mariga. “The organisers know experienced models will never agree to that so they only look for new models or those desperately looking for the job.” “If you sell tickets worth Sh15,000 and you had agreed on Sh10,000 payment, the extra Sh5,000 goes to the organisers. In essence, you end up doing their marketing for free. If you do not sell any tickets, you get paid as little as Sh500. This is after a two-day event and showcasing for 23 designers.” Such frustrations have led Kenyan models to pursue a different career path. t is becoming increasingly difficult for parents to keep up with their children in this digital age. Parents buy their children phones from as early as three years so that they could communicate better. But for the kids, the phones hold endless possibilities. They can go online and chat endlessly with random people, who sometimes lure them into dangerous spaces on the internet. No matter how hard parents try to monitor their children’s phone activity by going through their phones, children will always find ingenious ways to circumvent their securities. Acronyms are among the tricks used to throw off any parent who might be snooping. These acronyms are complex and hard to decipher without consulting the Urban Dictionary. It is not the Lol (laughing out loud), or brb (be right back) lingo you grew up with. Modern acronyms are hard core codes that sometimes take ages to figure out. We have sampled a number of popular acronyms, which you can use to keep your child safe. Be warned that some of these acronyms may break your heart .

enyatta University on Monday launched state of the art buses for their institution. The shuttles will be used to ferry students from lecture halls to hostels. The Kenyatta university main campus is massive. Getting from point A to B can be quite a hustle so the intra-campus commuter buses launched come as a welcome relief. The buses will pick students from Bishop Square, Nyayo hostels, Ole Moiyoi and the Moi Library at given intervals. The assumption was that the buses were to ferry students to and from the city center but it turns out they were for use within the campus. The ultra-modern buses provide for comfortable travelling, seeing as they are spacious. The Vice Chancellor has finally heard the students’ cries and made it easier for students to move from one place to another without hustle. A round of applause for Prof Mugenda!

CAMPUSVIBE BABU IN CRISIS MEETING WITH SUSPENDED COMRADES Yesterday, all suspended students from all universities in the country were called in for a meeting to chart the way forward in regards to their suspension. The meeting was convened by SONU Chairman, Babu Owino, (pictured below). The aim of the meeting was to discuss possible avenues through which students’ bodies from various varsities could help the members go back to learning. A number of students were recently suspended from Egerton University over demonstrations that rocked the campus. JKUAT students, who also protested last year, were also suspended without so much as a sneeze. Will Babu use force to have his fellow comrades back in school?

How many hours do you work in a day? Well it depends on the work at hand. Normally I work an average of 8-10 hours but sometimes I can even go 18 hours straight! (Exclaims) What qualifications do you need for your job? Immense passion for painting is a must. Academically, a certificate from a recognized institution will boost your CV and make you look more professional and appealing to clients. How did you start out? Well I have always had a flair for paintings and artworks since I was a little child. I started painting professionally after graduating from Buru Buru Institute of Fine Arts. I used to do various commissions from murals to interior décor which made me gain more experience. My first exhibition was in 2013 and it was a stepping stone and turning point for me. What is your greatest achievement career-wise? I am privileged to be included among other great artists in the Kenyan Arts Diary. Many artists apply to be selected but not many succeed.

What is the best part of your job? (Excitedly) Being my own boss. I totally love the independence and freedom I have as I am not answerable to anybody. I also get to set my own terms and do as I please. What is the worst part of your job? I really do not have any. I love my job. How much do you earn? I earn a decent amount. It depends on the size and complexity of a painting. My pieces range from Sh15,000 onwards. How do you deal with artists block? I try using a different technique or medium which challenges me and scoops me off my comfort zone. Children also open up my mind. When blocked I hang around children and teach them how to paint and in no time they get my creative juices running. Any advice to people who want to venture in to your line of work? Patience and creativity is key to make you stand out from the rest. Also networking is an important skill you must learn.

Mseto Campus Tour is back The Mseto Campus Tour, organized by Mseto East Africa, is set to make a comeback at the end of the month. DAILYHOROSCOPES CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan19 Spiritual or metaphysical concepts you hear about today may seem confusing and bothersome, Capricorn. Think of this as a good day to collect information, not decide whether to accept any of it or not. Tomorrow your mind will be clearer and more logical. AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 There probably isn’t a specific matter that you’re concerned about, but you may find that a number of different fragments of information capture your attention and get your mind going. Don’t write this off as crazy behavior. Write down your thoughts. They may prove useful later.

ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 The health of a friend or family member who lives far away may be a bit worrying today, Aries. A lack of contact with this person doesn’t help matters. You’re usually the type to phone at the drop of a hat, but today you’re less inclined to do this. You shouldn’t make yourself crazy.

Sudoku

TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 Your intuitive abilities are flying high, Taurus. If you turn this ability to those around you, you’re likely to be able to use it to increase your understanding of them, and thus bring you closer together. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 Some problems with the structure of your house may need attention, Gemini. Perhaps the plumbing or electrical wiring isn’t operating at maximum efficiency. It probably isn’t a good idea to try to fix this yourself, but you might not be able to reach a professional today. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 A co-worker could call you today, Cancer, but you probably won’t be able to figure out what this person is trying to say. Your colleague’s mind is a bit muddled now, and he or she might not be able to explain the situation very well. Be patient. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 Money matters may need your attention today, Leo, and you probably aren’t in the right space to think along those lines. Your mind is on different things, probably on your projects. Nonetheless, if you don’t at least make the attempt, you will worry about it all day. VIRGO Aug 23- Sep 22 You don’t need to know people well in order to accurately size them up. But today this ability could be temporarily lacking. You don’t sense much from those you meet, and when you do intuit their thoughts and feelings, what you pick up isn’t likely to be very accurate. Don’t worry.

MUSTREAD

LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 You usually tend to be outgoing, Libra, and you love talking to others. However, today you may feel far more reticent than usual, more inclined to listen than speak. There may not seem to be any real reason for this. It isn’t as if you’re depressed or worried. Don’t worry about it. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 This person may seem depressed and worried but not inclined to share the worries with you. All signs are that these are probably money problems, which he or she wants to keep private. Let your friend know you’re there if needed, then concentrate on your own concerns. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 Perhaps a premonition you once expressed has actually come to pass and others want to discuss it. Maybe you will be asked to repeat a story you once told. Your friends will probably want you to entertain them. If you aren’t in the mood for conversation, it’s best to avoid social gatherings.

He takes pleasure in keeping tabs and spying on clients. He appears harmless and often funny but knows the secrets of everybody in town. Things take a turn for the worse when lecturer Douglas Sharp moves to town. Sharp seems to have the same obsession as Heming. Heming feels threatened and becomes obsessed with Sharp’s mistress Abigail. A murder happens as things get ugly. This is not the first time things have ended up in the loss of life. The students overrun Cooperative Bank on Monday in the semis. The student travel to Mombasa for the first two games this weekend. Head coach George Mayienga still has worries of missing key players who might not travel due to work

commitments and classwork. Fatigue is also expected to weigh down the players. “We will train for the next three days, leave on Friday and play our first game on Saturday. It will take a toll on my players but we will prevail.” The coach acknowledged the impact of Sudanese import Sarah Chan. The player has been in influential form as witnessed in the Co-operative Bank clash on Monday.

“She was outstanding. Chan does not foul too much and that is why she plays for long. If she was committing too many fouls then I would definitely substitute her.” “In short all my players are important. I need them fit and ready for the finals,” said the head coach. This will be the third season in a row for Usiu to play in the finals. Co-op Bank will play Sprite Storms in the third-place playoff.

GIVE WAY: Hilda Indasi of Usiu dribbles past rivals during inter-university championships. The team will play Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in the Kenya Basketball Federation women league finals play-offs.

Berahino not for sale, insists West Brom chairman West Brom and England Under-21 striker Saido Berahino is not for sale, chairman Jeremy Peace has reiterated. The 21-year-old, who has scored 14 goals in 26 appearances this season, has been linked with a move to Premier League rivals Liverpool and Tottenham. In December, West Brom dismissed reports of a move to the

Reds for Berahino as an “entire fabrication”. “I said in the autumn that the club had no interest in selling Saido and that remains the case,” Peace said. “If manager Tony Pulis decides otherwise, Berahino is too important to us to consider trading.” Berahino recently pleaded guilty

to drink-driving charges and was banned from driving for a year and fined Sh496,400. The club chairman, in reaction, added: “I wanted to take this opportunity to clarify the position and the club’s thinking to our supporters now that Saido can put this unhappy chapter behind him.”

Roger Federer overcomes early blip to reach third round Roger Federer needed four sets to get past Italy’s Simone Bolelli at the Australian Open after a mystery problem with his finger hampered the Swiss. The four-time champion required medical treatment after losing the first set but came back to win 3-6 6-3 6-2 6-2. Second seed Maria Sharapova saved two match points before beating qualifier Alexandra Panova 6-1 4-6 7-5. Federer was at a loss to explain exactly what the issue with his hand was, but thought the local wildlife might have been behind

the problem. “I was looking at it and it felt like a bee stung me,” said the Swiss. “I thought, ‘It can’t be possible.’ I’ve never had this pain before. He later added: “I don’t know if it’s a blister. I don’t know what that thing is. It’s the weirdest thing. I don’t know. I feel it on the tip of my finger. I feel like it’s numb and swollen. “I knew we couldn’t tape it up because then it would be even bigger and more weird. I just said, ‘I hope it doesn’t get worse or stay like this.’ Actually it went away, but now I feel it again.”

Gor Mahia club deputy secretary General Ronald Ngala, says it will be unfortunate for the club to miss the services of Rayon Sport duo of Abdul Karim Nzigiyamana and Abouba Sibomana in next month’s CAF champion’s league. The players who were signed last week, complete the 18 new signing the club has assembled ahead of the 2015 season. Ngala however says it was too late to include the defensive players in the team list that was submitted late to CAF. “They arrived late therefore it was impossible for us to have them in the squad. They had been training with us however and we have included them into our league squad,” he said. Among the new players in the 23-man CAF squad include goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch, defenders Dirkir Glay and Bernard Odhiambo. Midfielders Khalid Aucho, Jerry Santo, Ronald Omino and Victor Ali Abondo are also included as well as strikers Taofiq Zachary and Michael Olunga. In the meantime the Kenyan champions have received an invitation from Ugandan league sides Vipers and Sports Club Villa for friendly matches. “We need to prepare well for the continental games and if we had better strength financially, then we would have prepared better. We will be going to Uganda in the last week of our preseason. “We have also planned to go to Mombasa where we will play three friendly matches. At the moment, the team is in Nakuru and we face Western Stima tomorrow,” the deputy Secretary General confirmed.

The campaign ended in a memorable quarter-final debut at the 2013 tournament in South Africa. The Blue Sharks have never beaten Congo who defeated The Blue Sharks 2-1 and drew 1-1 in

Cape Verde coach Rui Aguas said his side must improve after earning a rugged draw against Tunisia last Sunday. “We are paying all the attention on this match against Congo. We know it will be difficult, they are a very good side, we want to progress in this competition like any other team,” Aguas said.

Star regrets Nigeria’s Afcon tourney absence Academica de Coimbra midfielder Obiora Nwankwo has expressed regrets over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Equatorial Guinea. Obiora was part of Nigeria’s 2013 Afcon-winning squad in South Africa and inspired the Super Eagles to a third success at Africa’s biggest football showpiece. The midfielder says: “We made mistakes and everyone who

contributed must put his hand up.” The 23-year-old admitted his frustrations as he watched matches at the 2015 Afcon without Nigeria. “I have been watching some of the games (at the 2015 Afcon) when my schedule allows me but if I must be honest, it’s hard, very hard, to take just watching and not participating. “Nigeria’s Super Eagles are much stronger than a lot of the teams I have watched so far.

Walcott joined the Gunners that year to play alongside members of the 2003-04 ‘Invincibles’ side such as Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp. But the former Southampton player, 25, says team-mates Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are a stronger line-up.

He said: “I think this squad probably does beat it, but we need to prove it.” Walcott told the club’s website: “When I came, it was Robert Pires and Freddie Ljungberg, Bergkamp, Thierry and Jose Antonio Reyes that’s some attacking force as well. “When we go and achieve a little bit more than winning the FA Cup, then I think we can stand up and say this is the best attacking line up we’ve ever had.”

Gerrard, 34, has agreed to sign for MLS club LA Galaxy at the end of the season. Mourinho said he was “sorry” the former England captain is leaving the Premier League. When asked if he would try persuading Gerrard to stay, Mourinho said. “Or to get him on loan.”

Mourinho, who came close to signing Gerrard in 2005, applauded the midfielder as he was substituted in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the Capital One Cup semi-final. Mourinho said: “I’m not happy he leaves. I would love the Premier League to keep always the best players. “I think he has more than enough quality to play in the Premier League. But in their opening game against topranked African side Algeria on Monday night, they were made to pay for failure to capitalise on opportunities and slack defending as the Fennec Foxes emerged 3-1 victors.

Against a Senegalese side which claimed a last-gasp 2-1 win over Ghana, South Africa must claim a positive result to keep their hopes of qualifying for the quarterfinals alive. Captain Dean Furman has called on Bafana Bafana to be more ruthless in attack. “It is not the kind of start we wanted; we had worked hard for maximum points so the next two games are very crucial for us,” said Furman. “We have to lift our heads and go for a win and that’s all we need. The good thing is

that we played some outstanding football out there. We are just very disappointed not to come out with a win. “We really played very well but did not convert our chances, something we will have to rectify before our next match.” Senegal coach Alain Giresse believes South Africa were “unlucky” to lose against Algeria and has praised the team’s attacking abilities: “It’s a great team that has great offensive potential and has a great ability to play in small spaces,” the Frenchman aid.

ongo won their first game at an Africa Cup of Nations finals since 1974, beating Gabon to move top of Group A. Burkina Faso were twice denied by the woodwork as they were held by Equatorial Guinea in the first goalless draw of the 2015continetal showpiece. Alain Traore curled a free-kick against the post on 19 minutes, and 20 minutes later his volley was tipped on to the same upright by keeper Didier Ovono. The Burkinabe also came close after the break when Jonathan Pitroipa should have converted a far-post cross. Doualla missed Equatorial’s clearest scoring chance when he blazed over. The Gabonese enjoyed the better of the first half but fell behind after 48 minutes when Prince Oniangue stabbed the Congolese Red Devils in front from a corner. Charlton Athletic’s Frederic Bulot, who had a fine early volley saved, wasted Gabon’s best chance, missing an open goal midway through the second half. A draw against Burkina Faso on Sunday would take Congo to the quarter-finals. Whoever wins between Gabon and Equatorial Guinea in Bata on Sunday will also qualify for the last eight. Gabon dominated the early exchanges, playing with confidence after their 2-0 win over Burkina Faso on Saturday. Just four minutes in, Bulot tested Congo goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi with a blistering volley from the edge of the box, after Malick Evouna teed him up at the end of a fine move. Fifteen minutes later, Evouna was played in by the influential Levy Madinda and was unlucky to see his effort hit Maffoumbi before ricocheting off Congo defender Dimitri Bissiki and rolling inches wide. All eyes may have been on Gabon’s Borussia Dortmund star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but as he struggled from a wide position, Madinda grabbed the limelight and the bustling midfielder almost gave the Panthers the lead. And when Gabon failed to clear a routine corner after the teams’ return, Congo captain Oniangue lifted the ball into an unguarded corner of the net.
