Early poll results put CCM man ahead of Lowassa
From Page 1
Lowassa, a former Prime Minister and longserving Cabinet minister, who decamped from the ruling CCM earlier in the year, said he was confident of victory but warned that he would out rightly reject the results if there is rigging. “I am sure of winning if there is fairness in the election, but will reject the results if the elections are not free and fair,” Lowassa told journalists after casting his vote at 10am in the company of his wife, Regina. Former Vice President Moody Awori who is leading the East African Community Election Observers mission in Tanzania said the elections were peaceful. “The elections were peaceful, Kenyans have a lot to learn from the way Tanzania has held its elections,” Awori said. The election Board had also earlier indicated that at least 14 polling stations were today expected to repeat the voting process after polling clerks destroyed ballot boxes and papers after NEC failed to give them a 100 per cent increase in wages. The clerks demanded that the electoral commission pays them Tsh 100,000 (Sh 5,000) instead of the agreed Tsh 50,000 (Sh 2,500). According to Nec director of Legal Services Emmanuel Kawishe, the clerks expressed their anger by tearing apart ballot papers and

breaking ballot boxes forcing the voters to watch helplessly. The winner of the election will officially be announced on Thursday and presented with the certificate on Friday. He will then be sworn in the first week of November to take over as the fifth President of Tanzania. As the vote counting continued today, the opposition alleged there were cases of fraud. “There are allegations of electoral fraud,”
Chairman of the Tanzanian National Elections Commission Darmian Lubuva while announcing the first of provisional results in Dar es Salam earleir today.
Chadema spokesman Tumaini Makene was quoted by AFP as having told reporters. The claims followed the delaying of voting in some districts including the suburbs of the capital Dar es Salaam after ballot papers failed to reach in time. In the southwestern Sumbawanga region, “armed people attacked a vehicle hired by NEC and burned ballot papers,” Ramadhani added, saying new voting dates for those districts would be organised. But the opposition party Chadema said it was concerned at reports of stuffed ballot boxes. “We seem to be heading to results that may not be credible, and therefore might not be accepted not just by political parties, but will not be accepted by the voters themselves,” senior Chadema official Mwesiga Baregu said. But the claims were dismissed by CCM election co-ordinator Yusuf Makamba who termed the statements from the opposition as “inflammatory.” He warned that such utterances could spark unrest. Outgoing President Jakaya Kikwete, who is not running having served his constitutional two-term limit, has ordered the police to boost security to ensure calm in the country of 52 million people.

Amend police Act for effective Nyumba Kumi implementation The National Police Service Act should be amended to realise the full implementation of Nyumba Kumi initiative, a national taskforce has said. The National Taskforce on Implementation of Nyumba Kumi initiative has said the current police service Act does not decentralise power to common citizenry as envisaged by the Constitution. Taskforce chairperson Joseph Kaguthi (pictured below) said the Act gives powers to only the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) to convene a public baraza to select and nominate members of the community policing without the input of wanachi, hence a discord in security in most parts of the country. “There is no way an OCS who is a police officer with no connection of the security needs and concerns of the local people can decide who to lead the community in matters community policing,” he said. Kaguthi said the community needs to be given full participation in the selection and running of community policing programme. “Amending the police Act is important in that we are able to achieve joint partnership with the citizenry to promote vigilance, problem solving and crime prevention,” said Kaguthi. He hailed clustering of homesteads into groups at the community level, saying the government had been able to tackle the security challenges that has been reported to them. He, however, said their work had been frustrated after government agencies failed to act on various feedbacks they received from the communities. Kaguthi said the task force is working with the relevant institutions such as the office of the Attorney General and Kenya Law Reform to develop a legislation that will help it in its mandate as stipulated in the Constitution. He was speaking today morning at a Nairobi hotel, after a meeting with the various civil societies on their participation and importance of Nyumba Kumi initiative. Kaguthi urged civil societies to partner with various government agencies to be able to address the emerging security issues especially radicalisation of youths. He said social media is largely being used by extremist groups such as al-Shabaab to radicalise youths in higher institutions of learning.

Governors fault Mwangi wa Iria’s impeachment The Council of Governors (CoG) has accused Murang’a County Assembly of flouting the law by not giving Governor Mwangi wa Iria (pictured) an opportunity to be heard before they passed a motion on his impeachment. They termed the impeachment “null and void” and said the reasons given by the County Assembly did not meet the required threshold. “The County Assembly of Murang’a has acted in total breach of the Constitution and the County Governments Act by not according the governor an opportunity to defend himself against the allegations levelled against him,” said a statement from the council adding that “the opportunity to be heard by an impartial decision maker is at the heart of the rules of natural justice and procedural fairness.” The governors further expressed concern over what they termed “County Assemblies holding governors hostage.” Meru Governor and Council Chairman Peter Munya said it was time to admit that there were things that had not been success-
ful and work at improving them for the sake of the electorate rather than attack each other. “We should accept that we have faced certain difficulties and learn lessons from them and move forward for the sake of the people who have entrusted us with leadership positions,” said Munya. They further blamed Iria’s woes on the delayed disbursements of cash to counties which had led to the accumulated huge debts, with Murang’a County having hit Sh2.5 billion. “We are informed that huge bills have accumulated
most of which are arising from the liabilities of the former local authorities and the fact that the National Treasury has for over four months failed to disburse development funds to the county leading to more accumulated bills, amongst other challenges,” said Munya. Munya also faulted using the Auditor General’s report in the impeachment motion saying all counties had audit queries which they were yet to respond to and that the auditor did not hold exit meetings before compiling the final report.
The Governors also called for a consultative meeting with both levels of government to decide how liabilities from the local authorities would be resolved as they were overburdening the county governments. 34 of the 49 MCA’s voted to impeach wa Iria for what they termed as gross misconduct and abuse of office last Wednesday. And on Friday, the governor moved to the High Court to stop the county assembly Speaker from forwarding to the Senate the decision to impeach him. Wa Iria told the court that he had not been given a chance to defend himself. But Judge Joseph Onguto declined to issue the order, saying the governor will not suffer any prejudice. Already, the senate has formed an eleven member committee chaired by Mandera Senator Billow Kerrow to investigate More on this the claims against story at the governor. Beyond Zero clinics have treated 37, 807 By end of August this year, 37,807 Kenyans from 15 counties had benefited from the Beyond Zero mobile clinics across the country. According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, some 11,401 women, 9,193 children between 0-5 years and 1,577 pregnant women had been treated at the facilities. The statistics were collected from Kwale, Kilifi, Taita-Taveta, Marsabit, Isiolo, Tharaka Nithi, Kiambu, Turkana, Samburu, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Bomet, Narok and Homa Bay counties. “Some 5,984 children between 5-14 years old were served at the clinics while 1,255 adolescents between 15-24 years were also treated,” stated the report. Some 8,397 men were also recorded as having sought medical care from the facilities, the highest turnout drawn from Taita-Taveta at 3,606. Elgeyo Marakwet recorded the lowest turnout of patients compared to other counties with 195 with only 2 pregnant compared to Homa Bay’s 413. It was also quite interesting no men, pregnant and non-pregnant women visited the Kiambu county Beyond Zero clinic which also recorded the second lowest turn-out at 299. The initiative which is spearheaded by First Lady Margaret Kenyatta has already seen 32 counties receive the mobile clinics while 15 others are awaiting delivery. The 15 include, Busia, Embu, Garissa, Kirinyaga, Lamu, Mandera, Migori, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nandi, Nyamira, Nyandarua, Tana River, Trans Nzoia and Vihiga counties. The Beyond Zero campaign was aimed at accelerating the implementation of the national plan towards the elimination of new
HIV infections among children and promoting maternal, newborn and child health in Kenya. In the past maternal healthcare has not been given much consideration and with the new system of devolved government, there was hope that those particularly in the rural areas would access such services, but with the challenges faced by county governments this
was yet to happen. But besides giving counties the mobile clinics, the Beyond Zero campaign has helped create awareness on the importance of seeking medical care through pregnancy, delivering in hospital or under the care of a trained midwife and also ensuring baby’s growth rate is monitored to reduce maternal and child mortality. Corruption not good for economy, Lonyangapuo warns West Pokot Senator John Lonyangapuo has blamed the economic situation in the country on government’s lack of commitment to fight corruption. He said mega corruption reported daily in the country are the major causes of the economy not growing. “These mega cases of corruption must be dealt with by the government without fear or favour,” he said. He cited corruption allegations at the National Youth Service (NYS), which he said should be quickly investigated and those found guilty prosecuted. “We must investigate and conclude these cases in order for the country to move forward and also deter other people from committing the same offence,” Lonyangapuo said. The senator warned that if the corruption cases not firmly dealt with, the country’s economy may soon crumble. He faulted the government for the slow response of dealing with corruption cases. “It is time we take urgent measures to in eradicating corruption in the country,” Lonyangapuo said.

Pay your dues to city county, Kidero orders residents of Karen, Langata Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero has asked Karen and Langata residents to directly pay their rates due to the Nairobi City County government. Kidero said it is wrong for residents of Karengata area to expect the less financially endowed segment of city population to pay for services in the Karengata area. “Over the years, Karengata Association has incited its members against paying county government rates, leaving the burden to be carried by areas such as Eastlands which faithfully pay their rates and other dues. This must stop,” Kidero said in a press statement. The governor said the High Court in its recent judgement ordered the residents to pay all dues directly to the Nairobi City County Government. This is contrary to the order made during the council days that directed them not to pay to the City Council pursuant to repealed 1963 Constitution and the repealed Local Government Act on which Karengata District Association has hitherto relied . The Governor warned that since the ruling by Justice Odunga, the county government will not hesitate to take stern enforcement measures against those property owners who fail to pay their due rates to the county government. “I urge every citizen residing in Nairobi to pay county dues for enhanced services. It is wrong for the Karen and Langata District Association to delude the residents of the area that they are not eligible to pay rates.” He advised that penalties applicable at the rate of 3 per cent per month accrue on each individual account in arrears. The new rules will see each rate payer being responsible for their account and not through their association. Langata District Association got an order to deposit the money they collected from members in an escrow account to be operated by the then City Council and the association, but the County government discovered that Karengata had never remitted any amount to that escrow account. The County Government, however, moved to court to compel the residents to pay the monthly rates.
Blame shifted to parents as underage drinking worsens Parents are largely to blame for the increasing cases of minors involving themselves in alcohol and drug abuse, an assessment by stakeholders says. Participants including the National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada), liquor licensing bodies, alcohol makers, teachers, bar owners, parents association among others said parents are not doing enough to ensure their children keep away from harmful activities. “Parents contribute 32.2 per cent in introducing the minors to alcoholism, house hold workers 14 per cent, siblings 5.2 per cent and their friends 9.6 per cent” read research report released by the IPSOS synovate group. According to Catherine Mutundu, social and gender trainee of the CODIT institute, parents have immensely absconded their duty of parenting in preference to their careers and investments. “What used to be parenting has now been changed by our busy career lives, businesses and investments. Money has become today’s parent,” she said. From her report, it was further evident that there was no effective communication between parents and their children leading to the latter seeking misguided information from the morally-corrupted society. “There is no bonding between parents and
their children. What used to be management by observation parenting has been overtaken by the social media,” said Mutundu. The report came in handy at a time when Kenya Breweries Limited is conducting a campaign dubbed Under 18 asipewe to curb the drinking spree among underage in the country. In the recent past several incidents of minors taking alcohol have been reported within major towns in the country, the latest being the incident at Dubois road, Nairobi where a nine-year-old minor among others were found taking alcohol. KBLs Corporate relations director Eric Kiniti said the overall goal of the initiative is to provide a collaborative platform that will result in a significant and sustainable impact in curbing the underage drinking spree. The ‘Under 18 Asipewe campaign’ will cascade the identified solutions downwards, through awareness creation on real issues around the underage drinking menace especially to the parents and schooling institutions. Retail staff from main stream outlets working with all players in the entertainment industry, supermarkets and keg outlets shall be trained to appreciate their responsibility in the fight against underage drinking. Pub, Entertainment and Restaurant Association of Kenya (PERAK) chairman
Some of the minors who were part of 550 students arrested by police in a sex, alcohol and drugs party at an Eldoret club recently. Agencies have urged parents to take up parenting role.
Patrick Muya said there are no stringent regulations in the law to curb such vices in the country. He blamed the National Assembly and the County governments for ignoring their input in the drafting of these regulations. “Law enforcers, Parliament and county heads are to blame for the woes facing our minors. There is no
implementation of the outlined measures,” said Muya. Kenya National Parents Association chairman Wilson Okello took issue with the curriculum developers and the country’s education systems, arguing that the focus of our education addresses the career person without instilling values and ethics
in the readers. “Parents and the educationist focus to build careers from our children without the interest on values. Unless we address our systems our children are doomed,” he said Other stakeholders urged the government and the media to focus much on having local programmes that educate our minors.
How commandoes saved ISIS hostages Amid the incessant crackle of gunfire, the soldiers usher the cowering men through darkened rooms. The men are barefoot, most of them wearing long robes, some with large stains. As voices holler at them in the darkness to move quickly, they hurry across the debris-littered floor past the gun-wielding soldiers. The frantic scene is from a newlyreleased video showing parts of the mission in northern Iraq on Thursday in which US, Kurdish and Iraqi forces freed around 70 hostages from an ISIS-controlled
prison. The rescue of the hostages, who the Pentagon said were facing “imminent mass execution,” cost the life of one of the US soldiers taking part in the operation – Master Sgt Joshua Wheeler. A member of the US Army’s elite Delta Force, Wheeler was the first American to die in combat in Iraq in nearly four years. His death has raised questions about the nature of US involvement in the fight against ISIS. The new video showing scenes from the raid near Hawija, in northern Kirkuk province, was released by the
Kurdistan Regional Government. A US military official confirmed its source and authenticity to CNN. It was filmed from the helmet camera of one of the Kurdish soldiers, whose gun can be seen pointing at a barred window through which a glow is emanating, possibly from a fire. Soldiers are also seen moving around in a dark office in which a huge black-and-white ISIS flag hangs at the far end. In another scene, four men wearing robes and with their hands on their heads--presumably hostages---are ushered
through a doorway and then searched. Thirty troops from Delta Force on an “advice and assist role” participated in the raid when Kurdish commandos were overwhelmed after entering the walled compound on their own, a U.S. official with direct knowledge of details of the operation told CNN last week. The hostages who were freed were reported to include members of the Iraqi Security Forces, local residents and several ISIS fighters accused of spying.

the Chinese central bank feel the need to cut interest rates again? It is only reasonable to ask this after the People’s Bank of China cut rates on October 23rd, the sixth time in a year, in the same week that the government said the economy grew 6.9% year-on-year in the third quarter, ahead of market expectations. The answer lies in the question: growth is not as strong as official data suggest, and the government knows that. Nominal growth has slowed to 6.2%, the weakest since 1999, translating directly into weak cash flow for companies that already face heavy debt burdens. www.economist.com

Manufacturing banked to spur job creation A World Bank report has revealed that Kenya’s manufacturing industry has the key to create much -needed employment. While Kenya has made some headway in the global apparel market, there is an opportunity to grow faster by addressing bottlenecks to competitiveness, the new World
Bank reports have revealed. The data underlines the way to improving the competitiveness of key manufacturing sectors in Kenya. It shows that the performance of the timber-furniture, textileapparel and leather products value chains in Kenya are important for employment and growth in the
country. The information, dubbed the Apparel and Textile Industry report, provides an updated and comprehensive analysis of competitiveness for these manufacturing sectors in Kenya. It also suggests ways of accelerating growth, productivity
and innovation of Kenyan firms in these sectors. According to the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) Authority, Kenya’s AGOA exports, employment, and investment in the past four years (2010-2014) grew by 17 per cent, 12 per cent, and 21 per cent per year, respectively, taking up a third of all
apparel exports from Sub-Saharan Africa to the United States. “Kenya’s textile and apparel sector has the potential to grow, increase its contribution to GDP, and serve as a source of gainful employment for its fast growing, young population,” says Diarietou Gaye, World Bank Country Director for Kenya.
Growth in customer depots mints Equity Bank Sh106 billion after tax
Equity Group Holdings has posted a 32 per cent growth in total assets, an increase of Sh106.4 billion registering Sh445.8 billion up from 339.4 billion. This was driven by a 30 per cent growth in customer deposits during the same period the previous year. Speaking during an investor’s briefing sessions to release the group’s 2015 quarter results, Equity Group chief executive Dr James Mwangi said the impressive growth is underpinned by continued investment in the innovative new channels of agency and
mobile banking, success of diversification and regional expansion. He said the group’s loan book registered a 27 per cent growth to Sh263 billion up from Sh206.7 billion posted in September 2014 with SME segment contributing 70.6 per cent of the total loan book. The group’s strategy to de-risk profit by reducing reliance on the often volatile interest income received a major boost with fees, commissions and transaction income growing by 29 per cent to Sh 16.8
billion while interest income grew by 21 per cent to Sh 31.6 billion. “We are confident of sustaining this trend and are optimistic of achieving a 50:50 per cent contribution between interest income and other incomes as the growth of the latter is underpinned and driven by the success of the SME strategy that now constitutes 70.6 per cent of the loan book,’’ said Mwangi. However, Equitel mobile channel uptake soared with 162 per cent growth over the last 10 months with the number of customers subscribed to the new SIM card banking platform increasing significantly to reach 1.3 million after the launch in mid-August. The groups profit after tax shot up to 12.8 per cent up from 11.2 billion last year.

Fodder shrubs churn out nutritious feeds MONDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2015
A farmers’ group in Kinangop has resorted to fodder trees as livestock feed saying they are more nutritious, cheaper and require minimum resources to grow. Justus Muchiri, a former Kenya Agricultural and Research Organisation (Kalro) officer, who now heads the Kinyukia Farmers Group, says indigenous livestock feeds are normally balanced nutritionally, with three-quarters of
therise Britam’s shares shoot after deal Following the announcement that diversified financial services group BritishAmerican Investments Company (Kenya) Ltd (Britam) had reached an out of court settlement with property management company Acorn, Britam shares emerged as the week’s top gaining stock. Up a noteworthy 11.30 per cent, Britam shares ended the week at a price of Sh16.25 from their previous week’s closing price of Sh14.60. The legal settlement will see Britam recover Sh5 billion in cash as well as land in Nairobi and Machakos while relinquishing its interest in Acorn Group and a number of projects initiated by the firm. The Group said the projects which include those on high-value land in Kileleshwa and Upper Hill have an estimated value of Sh40 billion.
thefall Express Kenya ends week with deep slide Express Kenya Ltd took this week’s position of top losing stock following a -12.09 per cent slide in its share price over the course of the week’s trading. Express Kenya Ltd shares ended the week at a price of Sh4.00 from their previous closing price of Sh4.55. Express Kenya Ltd is primarily engaged in the provision of clearing and forwarding services as well as warehousing and logistics services. The fall in share price was, however, caused by trading over a thin volume of shares with a total of 500 shares trading over the course of the week. Express Kenya Ltd is among the companies that have issued a profit warning this year. The company announced a loss per share of Sh0.66 for the 6 month period. energy and a quarter of proteins, the ideal food component structure for livestock. This has come at a time when the country is said to be importing more than 70 per cent of raw material needed for manufacturing animal feed, the bulk of which consists of grain and oil seed cake as by-products. A recent study by non-profit group, the SNV Netherlands Development
Organisation said it is extremely difficult to purchase high quality inputs and that fraud is common, leading to substandard feeds with no nutritional value. A study by the Food Agricultural Organisation further revealed that the potential of fodder trees and shrubs as proteins sources has generally been ignored in the feeding regimens for livestock mainly because of inadequate knowledge on
various aspects of their potential use as well as initiatives associated with the development of more innovative feeding systems. The study found out that fodder crops are more digestible meaning that more food is absorbed hence an increase in dry matter intake, an indicator of the amount of nutrients that are available to the animal in a particular feed. In a bid to show the nutritional
value of fodder trees compared to that of commercial dairy feeds, the study picked on few fodder trees and dairy feeds to analyse their nutritional value. The International Centre for Research in Agro forestry (Icraf) report 2013 indicates that, the overall impact of the trees in terms of additional net income from milk could be as high as US$30 million in Kenya alone over the past 15 years.

Fashion’s next ‘It’ girl Who is Cheruto Chebichii? I am a lover of life a fashion designer whose passion for fashion is unrivalled. Why the brand name ‘Cheruto Chebichii’? These are my real names and without a doubt it’s the first name that came to mind when I was thinking of setting up a fashion house, plus I find it catchy. Who is your role model in the fashion industry? Olivier Rousteing. I love his work! What designs do you major in? Mainly, ladies clothing both contemporary and African attires. We also do wedding gowns, bride’s maid’s dresses and red carpet dresses. We also major in crafting quality leather bags. How long have you been doing this? Around seven months, we opened shop in April 2015. What did you study, why are you not pursuing that path? My dream and passion has always been in fashion, but since I did not fully understand how I could make a living out of it, I pursued a different path. I did a degree and a Masters in International Relations and then worked in an International Organization as a Protocol officer for about two years. Then my dream was to be a diplomat but the flames for my love for fashion was burning hotter than ever before, and my job was not giving me the satisfaction I was looking for. I decided to resign and the rest is history. How has it been in the fashion industry? Our brand is still a baby,

and just like any baby we are still crawling before walking, and we are learning a lot of new things along the way, and loving every minute of it. What inspires your creations? I am inspired by nature, if one looks around at Gods creation, one can only be amazed by how creative He is. What was your experience at the Nairobi Fashion Market? NFM, was our first runway show and I was a bit nervous going into it but it was an amazing experience. There was so much fashion and creativity that I was in awe. What is your view of the Kenya fashion industry? The industry has really grown compared to a few years back. It is making strides towards the right direction and I am happy to be a part of it. Where do you want to be in five years? In five years I see Cheruto Chebichii d r e s s i n g women from head to toe; we also want to start making shoes. Our plans are also to start exporting internationally, and I would love our brand to be a house hold name across the globe. I would love to dress the Lupitas, Obamas and Giuliana Rancics of this world.

SPORTS BRIEFS Hamilton wins another title in US Gran Prix
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton won a thrilling United States Grand Prix to seal his third World Championship. Hamilton pressured team-mate Nico Rosberg into a mistake during a frantic last 10 laps after a safety car and swept by to take his 10th win of 2015. It was an exciting climax to a race of fluctuating fortunes, lead changes and superb racing in changing conditions. Hamilton becomes only the second British driver after Sir Jackie Stewart to win three Formula 1 drivers’ titles Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel could have kept the race open until Mexico next weekend had he finished second, but could manage only third place behind Rosberg. “Amazing,” Hamilton told singer Elton John during the podium interviews. “I can’t find the right words to tell you how amazing this feels. “I love you guys and everything you do for me. For all my family, I love you all.” Hamilton’s teammate Rosberg congratulated him.
Cheat athlete Njogu could be freed due to weak laws
Julius Njogu could soon walk scot-free even after being arrested for attempting to cheat his way to Sh650, 000 prize money at the Standard Chartered Nairobi International Marathon yesterday at Nyayo National Stadium. Unfortunately, Njogu may not be arraigned in court because the complainant, Athletics Kenya (AK), do not have any law barring such acts. Lack of such legislations left the organisers with an egg on the face when asked what charges will be pressed on the cheat. “As the
race technical director, I can only disqualify him from the race, the rest is up to the organisers to take it up with the police,” said Ibrahim Hussein, the race technical director. Njogu, who hails from Naivasha, was caught trying to cheat the course when he sprinted with 10 metres remaining to the finish line to ‘beat’ Shadrack Kiptoo Kimaiyo at the tape, but his machination was quickly detected by the hawk -eyed journalists, who notified the organisers before he was disqualified. What raised more queries than answers was the fact
that Njogu, who also attempted the same trick at this year’s Safaricom Lewa marathon and Kisumu International Marathon last December, showed no signs of exhaustion even after ‘running 42km’ contrary to what was experienced from the winner Julius Kipkorir who was rushed to the medical area after the finish. A ‘heroic’ Njogu, clad in training shoes unlike professional athletes who ran on spikes, had no single sweat on his body, something that raised more alarm. Noticing the loophole, Njogu quickly removed his sneakers and
JKUAT beat UoN 26-0 in America football league
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Sparrows produced a domineering performance to beat University of Nairobi’s Mighty Nyati in an American Football league match played at the UoN Grounds at the weekend. The Sparrows who came into the match seeking to extend their good run in the four team league piled pressure on their opponents from the onset. The imperious form of yard rusher Mark Omondi and impressive catches by Teddy Dunde ensured JKUAT coasted to a 26-0 victory. Despite the sport enjoying unrivalled popularity in USA, back in Kenya it is faced with myriad of challenges which are threatening to nip its growth. Financial constraints and inadequate qualified coaches has not helped its growth either. Currently the three teams that take part in the league, JKUAT, UoN and Kenyatta University share one volunteer coach, American Dan Oskey a former NFL player. JKUAT leads the standings with six wins out of 10.
Cheruiyot wins IAAF road race in Portsmouth
Kenya’s Vivian Cheruiyot produced a dominant front running display to win the Great South Run, an IAAF Gold Label Road Race, yesterday. In near perfect conditions, the 2015 world 10,000m champion clocked 51:17 for 10 miles in Portsmouth on the English south coast, beating Great Britain’s 2014 European 10,000m champion Jo Pavey by 1:27, a minute and 27 seconds. On a relatively windless day on a course notorious for the strong headwinds in the final two miles, Cheruiyot, who was making her debut appearance over 10 miles and racing seriously at a distance further than 12km for the first time in an illustrious career, moved to fifth on the all-time list behind Linet Masai, Lornah Kiplagat, Sonia O’Sullivan and Paula Radcliffe, the latter two having set their best times on the Great South Run course. After two steady opening miles in which the leading group comprising Cheruiyot, Pavey, Britain’s 2014 European cross country champion Gemma Steel and the Kenyan duo Betsy Saina and Doris Changeiywo stuck together.

poured water on his body in an attempt to fool the organisers. More disheartening is the fact that Njogu did put up a spirited defence for his ‘victory’ even going ahead to lay blame on the organisers whom he accused of ‘changing’ the route. “I went through the entire course as marked, in fact if the organisers changed the route last night then that s their mistake, not mine,” he said. This was even after he failed to convince the organisers that he even trained in the first place. “I only know Wanjiru (Samuel),” said Njogu when asked to name any single athlete who come from the area. Unfortunately, Wanjiru, a former world marathon record holder, died in May 2011, long before Njogu started his ‘athletics career’ in 2013. “I train as an individual runner, I don’t know any other runner in Naivasha. In fact, I have a manager, a Mzungu (white) and he’s not in the country currently,” added Njogu. When pressed further, the organisers forwarded the case to AK who were not available for comment by the time we went to press. Kipkorir and Elizabeth Rumokoi clocked two hours, 13 minutes and 25 and 2:29.32 respectively in the men’s and women’s races in that order. Kimaiyo finished second with a time of 2:13.56 followed by Hillary Kiplimo (2:14.18 while Georgina Chepkurui Rono came second in the women’s category. Winners took home Sh1.5 million with first runner-up pocketing Sh650,000 while second runners ups were awarded Sh350,000.
Lesengei wins Kenyatta Cup Horse race Jockey Peter Lesengei on the back of Manzhouli rode to victory at this year’s Kenyatta Cup Horse Race at the Ngong race Course yesterday. The day was however characterised by numerous withdrawal of horse in the last minute as a result of undemanding between the Staples and the owners. Low entries were witnessed in most heats with horse owners withdrawing their horses in the last minute for veterinary certificate, maybe as a precautionary measure to the forthcoming races. Only two horses took part in the second event of the day, 1,800m Malewa River Handicap where Patsy Sercombe raced against Joe Karari stable, but it was Richard Kibet’s Pricky Needsumluck who trounced Paul Kiarie’s Hunting Call by a massive seven and a half lengths to win the two horse race. Lesengei, however, electrified the
crowd with his performance in the Kenyatta Cup when he pulled through in the last length to win the open handicap tight race by one and three-quarter lengths in a cool afternoon. Lesengei posted 1:10:05 to come first ahead of stable mate Simuni jockeyed by Daniel Miri. ‘’This horse is quick and in a race like this, you need speed and tactics right,” said Lesengei who heaped
praise on his horse after the race. Elsewhere, another fierce race that pulled the crown on the stand, mostly betters was the 1600m Gucha River Maiden. South African beat Sochi for its debut win in three starts. Daniel Tanui had to be given all the plaudits for engineering a tactful and masterclass performance to see off the chasing pack in emphatic
style. Josephat Kultiang was unable to muster a meaningful challenge as Sochi literally crumbled at the dead. The timing at the lapboard was as good as it got with a neat 1:39:00 being clocked. The Sercombe stable was the toss of the day with four wins out of a possible seven in their name.
SPORT 15 MONDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2015 Rob Simon scored the quickest try of the 2015 rugby World Cup to put Australia ahead against Argentina with less than two minutes on the clock. The Wallabies thumped the Pumas 2915 to set a date with New Zealand in a dream final next week.
Australia beat Pumas to reach rugby final
Australia and New Zealand will meet in the Rugby World Cup final in the historical Twickenham arena on Saturday. The Wallabies thumped Argentina 29-15 yesterday to set a date with All Blacks who beat South Africa in another semi-final. Bitter rivals on any field, Australia and New Zealand have met each other in a host of finals in other sports but the transTasman rivals had never met in a Rugby World Cup final. In March this year, the two countries clashed in the Cricket World Cup final for the first time. They also played each other in the netball World Cup final in August, the fifth time in a row they had met in the decider, and in each of the last three Rugby League World Cup finals. In all three sports, Australia won the most recent finals. The All Blacks and Wallabies have been the most successful countries at the World Cup, with either one of the South Pacific neighbours appearing in six of the previous seven finals. But until now they have never gone headto-head for the biggest prize in rugby, an anomaly partly caused by scheduling, but
also because one of them always slipped up. On three occasions, the draw has dictated that they would not meet in the final so they have come together in the semis. In 1991, Australia beat New Zealand in Dublin, and then went on to win the final a week later. In 2003, the Wallabies won again, in Sydney, but lost the final to England. Four years ago, the All Blacks won in Auckland and went on to defeat France in the decider after Australia lost its pool game against Ireland and ended up in New Zealand’s half of the draw. Even when the schedule has been in their favour, the rugby gods have not. Australia and New Zealand co-hosted the inaugural World Cup in 1987 and seemed certain to meet in the final after both sailed into the semis. After leading three times in their match against France, the Wallabies were beaten right at the death and had to watch on as the All Blacks won the title a week later. Several near misses The Wallabies won the second World Cup in 1991 but did not make it past the
quarter-finals in 1995. New Zealand did reach the final but lost to South Africa in extra-time. In 1999, the stars seemed aligned for an Australia-New Zealand final after the Wallabies beat the Springboks in extratime in the first semi at Twickenham. The All Blacks were overwhelming favourites to beat France in the second semi and looked to be in total control when they led 24-10 before the match suddenly turned around and Les Bleus piled on 33 points to pull off one of the biggest shocks in the tournament’s history. Unable to repeat that performance a week later, the French lost the final to Australia, who became the first country to win the World Cup twice. The Wallabies almost won a third title at home in 2003, but were sunk by a Jonny Wilkinson drop goal in the last minute of extra-time in the final against England. The 2007 World Cup was a wipe-out for both Australia and New Zealand and is the only time a final has been played without either of the two southern hemisphere giants.
Ingwe coach Loga quits for the second time Zdravko Logarusic has moved close to joining Tusker after quitting his coaching role at the AFC Leopards for the second time. The Croatian had early in August parted ways with the club before making a U-turn, just days after Ingwe had announced the appointment of Ezekiel Akwana as the head coach. Akwana was later moved to the assistant position. After months of frustrations coupled by late payment and players absconding training due to accrued allowances owed to them by the club, Logarusic, who is also on the radar of Tusker FC finally parted ways with the club. This may increase his chances of taking the place of Francis Kimanzi who was forced to step aside in his role as the head coach. The Croat who had no binding contract with a broke Ingwe is claimed
to have been served with a vacation notice after the club failed to pay his landlord three-month arrears according to FourFourTwoMedia.com. Club officials have however said the former Gor Mahia and Simba coach was at liberty to leave the club and did not have a contract with them. Loga joined Ingwe early in March this year to succeed Dutchman Pieter Hendrik de Jong. He missed Leopards dramatic 1-1 draw against Muhoroni Youth last Saturday. Meanwhile, Gor Mahia strikers Michael Olunga cut the lead between him and SportPesa Premier League top scorer Jese Were to just three goals after netting his 17th league goal of the season against Tusker FC to help K’Ogalo extend their unbeaten run to 28 games with 1-0 win over Tusker.
Relegated Nakuru All Stars continued to bite with victory over fancied Sony Sugar while Mathare United and Sofapaka cancelled out each other in a four-goal fest in Sunday’s matches. Ulinzi Stars got the better side of Thika United when the soldiers avenged their last weekend’s 2-0 loss to Thika when they beat them by a solitary goal at their back yard. Sony succumbed to their second consecutive home defeat following a 2-1 loss to relegation bound Nakuru All Stars. Sony lost 1-0 to Tusker last Wednesday. Man City back on top M anchester United and Manchester City played out a dull deadlock in their derby at Old Trafford yesterday. City returned to the top of the Premier League ahead of Arsenal on goal difference - but there was little to celebrate in a game devoid of attacking quality. What few chances there were fell to United. Substitute Jesse Lingard hit the bar late on and City keeper Joe Hart saved well from defender Chris Smalling. United defender Marcos Rojo and City’s Nicolas Otamendi were both outstanding as Old Trafford’s atmosphere was muted long before the final whistle. Wayne Rooney celebrated his 30th birthday on Saturday, but did not produce a performance to get the home supporters in the party mood. It was not for want of trying as Rooney tirelessly tried to exert influence on a game where both sides cancelled each other out for long periods. There is no doubt, however, that some of the old snap and spark is currently
missing, ending in Rooney treading the familiar territory of a player almost trying too hard to make things happen. Rooney having a head wound stapled on the touchline was arguably the most eye-catching moment of a dreadful first half, where his struggles were underlined with one wayward pass that ended a promising United move. And there were howls of frustration from United’s fans after the break when he decided against trying to pick out an option further forward, turning to pass back. Rooney has had such fallow spells before and has invariably ended them in spectacular style so only a fool would write him off - but this was not his best day. Arsenal went top of the Premier League for the first time since February 2014 as headers from Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny defeated Everton. After a cagey opening, the Gunners went ahead as Giroud met Mesut Ozil’s floated cross with a deft touch. Koscielny doubled the lead two minutes later from
Santi Cazorla’s ball in. Ross Barkley’s deflected shot brought Everton back into it, but Romelu Lukaku wasted an excellent, if rare, chance to level as he headed against the bar. Giroud made his case for a regular starting spot in Arsenal 2-1 win over Everton that saw them go top for hours before Manchester derby results. Ten-man Chelsea slumped to their fifth Premier League defeat in 10 after another abject performance saw West Ham United claim a major scalp. Zarate opened the scoring in the first half but the real turning point was when the Blues had Matic sent off just before half-time for a second bookable offence and, in the aftermath, had both coaching staff Silvino Louro and manager Jose Mourinho sent to the stands. Nothing is going right for the visitors, who had six yellow cards dished out to them on top of Matic’s red and the dismissing of the coaching staff, and despite Cahill levelling on the pitch, it was left for Andy Carroll to rub salt into Chelsea’s gaping wounds.
