Keter brag: EACC to grill Lenayapa From Page 1

In the video, Keter accuses the weighbridge officers of ignoring calls from the three. And in a show of might, he informs the officers that “we are the ‘government’. State House has denied any involvement of its officers in the incident. A statement from State House after the video footage went viral

said: “The Presidency has never, does not and will never support or condone corruption, extortion or abuse of power by any State or public officer. The Presidency condemns the incident where several public and/or State officers are alleged to have abused power and exerted undue pressure on officers lawfully going about their duties in order to evade due process,”

read part of the statement “We remind everyone that there is a sound public interest in enforcing axle load regulations without exception. We also have obligations to regional States in this connection,” the statement said. The embattled Nandi Hills MP is represented by lawyer Okongo Omogeni. Omogeni, who accompanied

Keter to the commission’s offices to record the statement, said his client honoured the EACC summons but will record his version of events at a later date. “We have met the officers of the commission… we have raised the fundamental issues that we need to be clarified so we have adjourned the session to another date,” said Omogeni. The commission has since set the

meeting with Keter for between January 28 and 29, while Birdi will record her statement on Wednesday morning. Keter has maintained his innocence, saying he will not apologise over the exchange which he claims was necessary as he was fighting for the ‘rights’ of drivers. He claimed the truck drivers spend days on end waiting for clearance at the weighbridges

and have to bribe the officers to enhance the process.

CID summons Sossion over N. Eastern teachers stand-off

DESERTED: Ifo Secondary School pupils at Dadaab refugee camp, Garissa County in class. Police have summoned Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary General Wilson Sossion for allegedly inciting teachers working in North Eastern not to return to work.

Police have summoned Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary General Wilson Sossion for questioning for allegedly inciting teachers working in North Eastern not to return to work. The union has asked teachers not to resume duty over fears of insecurity, intimidation and harassment. Sossion said he had been asked by officers at CID Headquarters in Nairobi to appear before them for grilling over the refusal by teacher to return to their work stations. The summons were issued through a call and text message to Sossion on Tuesday. “I am summoned to the CID over the NEP teachers. My statement is simple. Children of NEP deserve quality education from secure teachers,” he said in a post on his Twitter account. He alleged that some teachers from North Eastern have been spending the night at the union boardroom in Nairobi. “Addressing NEP teachers yesterday I dared TSC to sack any of them and face the wrath of entire teaching force in KE,” he said. CID Director Ndegwa Muhoro said his officers had summoned Sossion for grilling following

complaints of incitement. Learning in schools in North Eastern Kenya has been paralysed for a month as teachers who are not from the region continue to stay away from their work stations. About 2,000 teachers from terror-prone areas vowed not to return to their stations in a stand-off with the employer who has warned that they will be sacked for failure to resume work. The teachers have vowed to defy a return-to-work order by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and dared the Government to sack them, insisting they could not risk their lives for teaching posts. The position worsened relations between them, county governments in affected regions and TSC. Trouble started in November when 24 teachers were shot dead by suspected Al-Shabaab militants as they travelled home for Christmas holiday. In a brief to the media on Tuesday, the teachers said statements by National Assembly Majority Leader Adan Duale ‘worsened the matter as he was not conciliatory.’ Duale had warned teachers to return to work by Monday next week or they be sacked.

Do you agree with recommendations by CIC that governors, senators and MPs who misbehave in public be sent home?

Pharis Kimaru

Of course they should. Mistreating the public who gave them power is misplaced. They should style up and realise that or be sent home.

Flevian Evet

They should be sent home and preferably jailed for misbehaving in public.

It is about time our leaders take responsibility for their actions. If they misbehave they should be sent home.

The commission did a good thing to come up with such recommendations. It is not a bad move. They should be sent home. Misbehaving in public is not good.

Teachers don’t know how to teach and the government is to blame Teachers do not have the tools needed to prepare their students for life in the real world, a new report has shown. Students are now more likely to cram useless information and leave their classrooms with no actual skills than to learn anything of real value. The report, released less than a week ago by the Ministry of Education, has found that the laws governing the way Kenyan students are taught are either ineffective or barely useful enough to help develop their young minds. In fact, only around one in 10 out of 450 different improvements and reforms within the education system that put in place between 2008 and 2014 have been evaluated for their impact by the government. This means that no one knows if most of the

initiatives used to make learning effective are even working. “Too many education reforms are failing to measure success or failure in the classroom,” said Andreas Schleicher, OECD Director for Education and Skills, at the launch of the report at the Education World Forum in London. “It is crucial that reforms are given the time to work and their impact is analysed,” he added. Prof. Kaimenyi, who represented Kenya at the Forum, defended the government, saying that it was already working to strengthen institutions through a council known as the Education, Standards and Quality Assurance Council (ESQAC) as well as through the Commission for University Education (CUE).

A suspected thug was last night shot dead even as his two accomplices escaped after police confronted them during a robbery incident in Savanna, Nairobi. The gang had attacked a woman in her car when police on patrol pounced. In another incident, two people were shot and wounded in a robbery on a home in Kiamumbi area. Police say the woman and man were shot on the hand and leg respectively by suspected thugs who escaped on foot after their mission was foiled. Elsewhere in Rongai, a guard was shot and wounded in a botched robbery. The guard had confronted gunmen and tried to stop them when he was shot in the shoulder. The gang also managed to escape on foot.

Pupils march to Ngilu offices over land scam MATTERS LAND: The chairman of the National Land Commission Mohammed Swazuri (left), Chief Justice Willy Mutunga (centre) and Lands permanent secretary Doroth Angote (right) moments after the NLC members were sworn in at the Supreme Court, Nairobi February 27, 2013. A lobby group has called on the National Land Commission to quickly address the increasing cases of land disputes or quit. Land Development and Governance Institute Executive Director Mwenda Makathimo says the commission is to blame for its failure to stem out the rising cases of public land grabbing in the country particularly school and forest spaces. The NGO says the public should remain vigilant to protect any public land, not-

ing that the Mohammed Swazuri led commission lacks the will to implement the public land laws, instead seeking to indulge in conflicts with the mother ministry of lands. “The commission though financed by taxpayers to a tune of over Ksh 1.2 Billion annually, has messed Kenyans in land management and this cannot be left to continue. The commission is no longer in its inception stages and if the staff in the

commission are not ready they should be fired, they should know that land is an emotive issue in the country and a lot is expected of them. In the meantime Kenyans must jealously fight for their land rights,” Makathimo said. It also wants the commission to give the country an inventory of all public lands, noting that the public land registry should be scheduled and not done in an ad hoc manner which creates a leeway for the

grabbers. Issues of land disputes have resurfaced with the recent demonstration to restore Lang’ata Road primary School playground making headlines news. NLC was squarely blamed for failing to intervene in good time to halt the confrontation during which pupils were teargased by police as they protested the alleged grabbing. President Uhuru Kenyatta was among those who blasted the commission for failing to act in good time.

A group of pupils and parents from St. Catherine Primary in South B today marched to ministry of lands offices in Upper Hill to complain about an alleged grabbing of their land. They say private developers have been targeting their land in the past months making their stay there difficult. The pupils started their march from the school at about 7am and walked for almost five kilometres to seek for an appointment with Lands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu. The school has more than 500 pupils and caters mostly those from the nearby Mukuru slums. They were joined by activist Boniface Mwangi who last week led another group in reclaiming the Langata Road Primary School field that had been grabbed.

Govt keen on youth development to eliminate radicalisation - Amina

WE’LL SAVE THE YOUTH: Foreign Affairs and International Trade CS Amina Mohammed says government is deliberately undertaking initiatives aimed at engaging the youth to eliminate any attempt at radicalisation and extremism.

The government is deliberately undertaking initiatives aimed at engaging the youth to eliminate any attempt at radicalisation and extremism which preys on their vulnerability, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed has said. Speaking during a meeting with Danish Foreign Affairs Minister Martin Lidegaard on the sidelines of the ongoing Africa Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Mohamed said the government will impart skills to empower the youth socially and economically. She cited the National Youth Service (NYS) which she said targets to train over 20,000 youth every year and prepare them for employment both locally and abroad. “We have, for example, talked with the United Arabs Emirates which has promised to give our youth jobs in hospitality sector, transport sector, manufacturing, airlines among others,” Mohamed said. She said priority will be given to those going through NYS and have been impacted with skills on what to expect in a foreign land and how to develop themselves. Other initiatives, CS Mohamed said, include Uwezo Fund which seeks to avail capital to the youth for support in entrepreneurial activities; the Slum Upgrade Project which provides employment opportunities to the youth; and the Nyumba Kumi initiative aimed at enhancing community participation in addressing insecurity. “The youth are critical element in ensuring sustainable development in Africa. We

should work together to support initiatives that uplift their social economic conditions. We must fill the gaps that could be exploited by the extremists to negatively influence them,” said Mohamed. She said the case of violence and extremism will only be addressed in a concerted manner since the challenge remains global. Terrorist organizations have thrived through recruitment of sections of society who are marginalized and impoverished. The youth have been very vulnerable to extremist ideology. She said many jihadists fighting in Somalia, Iraq, Syria and elsewhere included those from outside these countries and especially from the West. Sahel-Maghreb-Sahara and Horn of Africa regions had borne the brunt of these extremists. “We have monitored movement of so-called ‘visitors’ passing through Kenya and have been shocked to discover some were actually jihadist using our ports to access Somalia,” said Mohamed. She said there was need to significantly reduce youth vulnerability to terrorist activities. On his part Lidegaard said his country was very keen to support initiatives that target the most vulnerable in society including the youth, women and children. “I am happy that Kenya has started these initiatives targeting members of community who would otherwise remain poor. The slum upgrading in Nairobi is particularly of interest since it directly addresses issues of poverty and environment,” said Lidegaard.

Hope for the poor as plan to curb kitty frauds is launched People living below the poverty line were yesterday given renewed hope of benefiting from the billions set aside for their social protection after the government promised to introduce biometric registration to prevent duplication and mismanagement of the funds. President Uhuru Kenyatta made the revelation yesterday when he launched the inaugural Social Protection Week

links among all government agencies involved in social protection schemes. The flagship of the government’s social protection schemes are the cash transfer programmes to the elderly, orphans, the disabled and the Hunger Safety Net Programme. During the one-week event, government bodies delivering social assistance and security will interact with each other

plan to improve synergy and reduce mismanagement of funds. President Kenyatta said the biometric system will curtail duplication since the collection of payments will be pegged on the individual’s fingerprints. The move to employ a biometric system comes after a directive issued by President Kenyatta last year to the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Services, to safeguard billions

allocating to support vulnerable people. This financial year alone, the government allocated Sh13.6 billion to support cash transfer programmes for older persons; orphans and vulnerable children; persons with severe disabilities. The cash transfer programmes also include the Hunger Safety Net Programme targeting the most poor and vulnerable households in Turkana, Mandera, Marsabit and Wajir counties. President Kenyatta said there is no dignity in poverty and it is unacceptable for 46 percent of Kenyans to live below the poverty line. “There is little dignity for the destitute. There is little dignity for any nation that allows nearly half its people to continue in poverty,” said President Kenyatta. “We expect that by the end of this fiscal year, 521,000 households across the country should benefit from the programmes,” he added. He said the government has developed specific interventions on social protection to the youth, women and persons with disabilities, which include the National Youth Service 5 Point Vision, the Youth Enterprise Development Fund and the Uwezo Fund.

Police department to be moved from IG’s office The National Police Service Commission on Tuesday announced that the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) of Police will be relocated from Jogoo House where Inspector General of police office is. The unit will be detached from the National Police Service as prescribed by the law according to the commission’s Chairman Johnston Kavuludi. Speaking when he opened a sensitisation workshop for Assistant Superintendents of police and officers from IAU on the vetting process, Kavuludi pointed out that the budgetary allocation to facilitate logistical arrangements including rent of space which was yet to be identified has already been set aside. “In order to

create an enabling environment for the unit, the law stipulates that the IAU shall be located in separate offices from the rest of the service and it shall not be subject to control, direction or command of Kenya Police, Administration Police or Directorate of Criminal Investigations but shall report directly to the Inspector General. Currently, the IAU headed by Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police Leo Nyongesa shares the same building with the Inspector General in contravention to the provision in section 87 of the National Police Service Act. The unit is mandated to among others deal with cases of indiscipline, including corruption.

Mwalimu Sacco bank bid stalls The Government has stopped Mwalimu Sacco’s bid to acquire Equatorial Commercial Bank (ECB) after Co-operative Alliance of Kenya raised complaints on the transaction. The Alliance said the transactions were done in a questionable manner and may put members at risk of financial loss. “We are also concerned over the specific choice of investment, and its suitability, publicly available reports show that the current owners have been stripping some assets before the sale date, the bank in question has an alarming history of loss making, overall poor operational which has resulted in significantly eroded capital,” said Co-operative Alliance of Kenya in a letter addressed to the Ministry of Industrialisation and Enterprise Development. Mwalimu Sacco had last Friday announced a

51 per cent acquisition stake at ECB at a cost of Sh1.6 billion, making it the majority shareholder. Mwalimu Sacco CEO Robert Shibutse said the acquisition had been approved by the Central Bank of Kenya, Competition Authority of Kenya and Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA). Commissioner of Co-operatives Patrick Musyimi has since appointed an investigating team to review the transaction and ensure interests of Sacco members are upheld. “We will share the details of the inquiry as soon as they are finalised. This move will subject the matters to a rigorous process that will ensure that any pertinent issues are addressed before the investment can proceed,” said Musyimi.

BP to freeze salaries of 84,000 employees British multinational oil company, BP, will freeze salaries for more than 84,000 workers across its companies in a cost cutting measure. The move has been blamed on the plunge in oil prices in the past six months. Oil prices have fallen significantly with trading of crude oil being 50 per cent below average. Other major companies such as Shell and Premier Oil have been forced to take tough measures, including putting projects on hold and cutting contractors pay, as a way of responding to the price fall. Bod Dudley, the CEO of BP, made the announcement on Monday via a memo to

staff. He said the harsh trading environment had forced the company to take a number of measures, including a general freeze on salaries for 2015. He said the company will review salaries again in 2016. The announcement came just weeks after the multinational cut 300 jobs in Aberdeen. Last year BP said it expected to take a $1billion (Sh91.7 billion) restructuring charge as it looked to cut thousands of jobs across its global operations. Salaries are a major part of its operating expenses spending over $14bn (Sh1.3 trillion) in wages and pension contributions.

Survey shows Kenyans optimistic on their future The Nielsen Global Survey, a study that is done four times a year, claims Kenyans are optimistic of their financial future. They believe coming months will bring with them more money and more employment opportunities. Nielsen is a global research company that takes a ‘pulse’ of consumer sentiments towards global economic climate by asking consumers about their job prospects and personal finances.

Their Global Consumer Confidence survey represents nearly two billion people across 60 countries. It is an online survey involving tens of thousands of respondents across Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, Middle East and North America. Nielsen, a leading global provider of information and insights into what consumers watch and buy, says consumer confidence stands at 96 points (out of 100). The trend is a decline of two

The study states that “in Kenya, 69 per cent of respondents believed money matters were good or excellent, and 41 per cent were confident in their spending capacity quarter.”

Takamoto Biogas to hire operations staff Takamoto Biogas, a renewable energy company located in Nairobi, is recruiting new staff as part of ongoing expansion plan. The company, which provides biogas systems to small-scale farmers in rural areas, has asked qualified candidates to apply for the positions of operations manager, sales and marketing agents. Other vacant positions are technical consultant, auditor and field manager.

Kenya boasts of two million farmers, each of whom has at least one cow. Since biogas is made of cowdung, Takamoto says each of the farmers is a potential client. Applicants can send e-mail to Operations Manager at Takamoto Biogas, indicating position they are applying for on the subject line. They should send CVs to ‘info@ takamotobiogas.com by February 1, 2015.

Takamoto Biogas has installed biogas systems in Githunguri and more than 70 units have been sold in less than four months. A statement from the firm says: “Having proven the demand, we are preparing to scale up operations.” Takamoto Biogas is therefore looking for “motivated, proactive and energetic” employees.

Nearly every working Kenyan worth his salt wants to buy their own car. Not everyone can afford to purchase a big, powerful car or a snazzy, fuel efficient automobile. That’s where Standard Chartered Bank’s Auto Loan product comes in. Regarding the service, a statement from the lender reads: “Here is your chance to afford and buy the car you always wanted.” The loan is available to borrowers purchasing either new or used cars. Those that qualify for the service can borrow up to Sh10 million for new cars and up to Sh5

million for used cars. The bank offers financing of up to 90 per cent for new cars and 80 per cent for used cars. It also offers a repayment period of up to 5 years (60 months). The lender assures its customers that they will have “peace of mind knowing that we will finance both the cost of insurance and car tracking device.” The loan is available to salaried individuals with a minimum gross income of Sh75,000 per month. Borrowers must also have a salary account with Standard Chartered Bank before the loan is disbursed.

that benefits of LSFD should not be understated as it allows for effective use of emission control systems for diesel vehicles and equipment thereby reducing pollution and promoting cleaner air and better health. “Motorists who use diesel will lower their maintenance cost because they will not need to change their diesel particulate filters (DPF) as often as they currently do,” added Igathe.

Using gourds for seed storage works like charm time consuming, unreliable, and expensive. Saving his own seeds and planting them early has enabled him to choose the best seeds and be self-sufficient, even in times of hunger. This initiative has helped him earn an income by selling the surplus seeds to other small-scale farmers in the area. Mr. Toroitich sells a kilo of maize

seeds for Sh80, a price that is much more affordable than the cost of hybrid seeds from large companies that charge up to Sh120 for a kilo. To save his seeds, Toroitich uses gourds, which form a sort of ‘seed bank’ to store his supply. A seed bank functions as a storage container for seeds in case seed reserves elsewhere are destroyed. A ripe gourd is picked and an

HUSTLER SECTOR A group of entrepreneurs is supplementing their income making an extra Sh5,000 to Sh10,000 every time their grass grows. Muriuki Tera and his wife, among other farmers who grow Napier grass for commercial purposes, are making money by letting others relieve them of these tall green plants. In parts of Meru, Kilifi and even the outskirts of Nairobi, a one ton pick-up load of Napier grass may be sold for at least Sh500. While it doesn’t seem like much, the price can double, depending on the season and how scarce the supply is. Those carrying the grass to customers can also make

between 10 and 15 trips, giving them as much as Sh7,500 in a single day. Breaking into the Napier grass business, however, is not quite so simple. Most traders either have hectares of land or a supplier, who grows the grass and sells it to them. Others, higher up the supply chain, have a small group of labourers to cut the grass and a vehicle to transport it to the nearest buyer. For instance, the Katana Mashia farm, a plot located in Bomani, Kikambala division of Kilifi District, sells Napier grass to a livestock farmers on contract. The farmers pay the land owners

opening is made on top of it. Water is poured inside, and a stick is used to remove its seeds and other pulpy substances. The gourd is then left for 2 weeks, while closed tightly and covered with grass to help it harden. A special indigenous tree bark is then crushed, placed inside the gourd and mixed with water. Toroitich says that the bark comes from a tree called “simotwo” in

his local dialect. The bark acts as a stabilizing agent and helps suppress a foul smell that the gourd usually emits. Finally, in order to disinfect the gourd, fresh cow dung is placed inside, and the gourd must again, be left for a number of days. Palm tree leaves are used to clean the gourd, which is then hung upside down to dry completely until it is ready for use.

Napier grass gives farmers extra Sh10,000 Sh5,000 for every harvest, which, without irrigation, comes four times a year. This means that anyone with a consistent supply of water can keep the grass growing and reap the profits as many times as he

can. Muriuki prefers selling Napier grass on contract to farmers who have a large number of dairy cows since they tend to take all the grass from his farm, thereby giving the Napier grass time to re-grow for the next harvest.

Back home, our very own “Mrs. Slimpossible”, Lilian Muli, was at one point a fixture on our screens. This was as a new wave of female news anchors took the media by storm. Her flashy smile and (for lack of a more diplomatic word) ‘hot’ body gave her a unique presence on television. But before Kenyans could get enough of her, she disappeared to answer the call of motherhood. She revealed in a recent interview that during her pregnacy, she hit a maximum 90Kg but after she was done with it, she cut down to 63Kgs. All this through through sheer exercise and observance of a strict diet. She emerged a couple of months later barely looking recognisable and with a distinct new confidence. She has been shaking up prime time television and breaking barriers ever since her return— and a good number of Kenyans are grateful to her for championing the weight-loss agenda.

A new ‘socialite’, Tiara, has invited Tanzanian artiste Diamond to ‘sample’ her via a video. In the video, she is skimpily clad with a ‘barely-there’ top and panties, while gyrating to Diamond’s song Nitampata Wapi. Tiara went on to upload the video on YouTube. Will Diamond respond? We are eagerly waiting!

MOG back with a new song The MOG duo has been out of the music scene for a while now. It, however, seems they have not been sleeping or ‘slipping’ as they are back with a new song, Madeni ya Sukuti. Produced by Philip Makanda, the song has a catchy chorus with underlying chakacha tones in its beats. The video is not yet out but we are hoping it will be as good as the audio.

HOME& LIVING Not only does it centre the room it gives the room a homely feel that warms it right up even though there is no fire in its depths.

G

reat memories were made as young ones gathered around the fire waiting for grandma to tell them a story. No matter how long the story took, the fire kept them warm and safe. Nairobi can get pretty cold especially in the months of June and July, and fireplaces are a good bet to lock the chills out. Unfortunately, most homes in Nairobi do not come with in-built fireplaces. This is mostly because of lack of space and the lack of interest from tenants. Most Kenyans would regard a fireplace as just another storage area. However, if one is lucky enough to design and build their home from the ground up, including a fireplace would be a great gamble. Not only does it centre the room properly, but it also gives the room a homely feeling that warms it right up even though there is no fire in its depths. But modern design has made fireplaces more aesthetic than functional. One can construct a ‘dummy’ fireplace to give the room a jolt of character. They can easily design and put up a dummy fireplace in their home just for the beauty of it. You can build the fireplace easily into a wall and use it as a place to mount pictures and mementos. Gas and electric fireplaces are also cropping up as an alternative to wood fireplaces. Now with the increasing environmental awareness, people are shifting towards using gas and electric fireplaces as opposed to wood. Cosy up to the idea of having a fireplace in your home and it might not just be a waste of space after all.

aking bags out of old tank tops is not only easy but you will be very pleased with the results. Now this is a really simple but extremely rewarding idea. Every girl will at one time or another end up with more clothes than she has any idea what to do with. This is, however, a way to incorporate tank tops into your wardrobe in an interesting way, even if you cannot wear them. Tank top tote bags are cute, fun and easy to clean up because they are made from cotton fabrics. They are also really easy to make. To start, lay down the top on a flat surface and turn it inside out. Depending on how long you want the bag to be, snip it off at the length

Cutting butter and margarine out of the equation during breakfast and meal times will help in reducing the number of calories being consumed in the course of the day. Another really manageable way of cutting by using skim milk instead of full fat milk when making hot

Replacing snacks between meals with fruits and vegetables. Instead of chowing down on that chocolate bar when hungry in the middle of the afternoon, opt for a carrot or fruit salad or a banana. Fruits and vegetables have more nutritional value with a fraction of the calories contained in a piece of chocolate. The will also probably leave you feeling more satisfied. Soft drinks are unhealthy in many ways, they have incredibly high sugar levels, which cause sugar crashes, have absolutely no nutritional value and are responsible for adverse heart conditions.

Replacing soda with water or natural drinks saves you a lot of money from hospital bills, all while reducing calorie intake.

There are a number of simple ways that you can cut out excess calories in meals without essentially changing anything you eat. iets have always been popular but they are definitely no assurance of weight loss. Some might even end up being counterproductive and result in weight gain after getting off the diet. But there a few elements that you can drop from your meals, substantially reducing the number of calories you take in.

or those of you who have had the privilege of flying, it can be quite a pleasant experience. You cannot explain that feeling you get when you are airborne and looking at the fluffy clouds from the little airplane window. Or the breathtaking view of snowcapped mountains, winding rivers, vast deserts, a beautiful sunset or flickering lights of cities from a higher viewpoint. Well, these good feelings can easily be distracted and replaced with boredom and stiff joints especially if you are flying on economy class and for long hours. Our muscles tend to cramp up and ache when we sit for long periods without movement. After hours of sitting down in the same position, a cold numbing

To ensure you have a good flight, free from the uncomfortable aches and swollen feet, you can engage in easy in-flight exercises which will leave you feeling fresh and rejuvenated. Neck. Tilt your head to the sides ensuring the ears touch the shoulders. Hold the position for five seconds and repeat the process to work the neck muscles. Legs. Lift each foot off the ground and revolve it round in circles clockwise and anticlockwise five times each to increase blood circulation. You can also try

placing your right ankle on top of your left leg and lifting the leg up and down five times to loosen the tense muscles. Switch legs and repeat. Arms and shoulders. Hold your right shoulder with your left hand and left elbow with your right hand for five seconds, switch hands and repeat five times. You can also rotate the shoulders in a clockwise and anticlockwise motion to relieve the muscles. Taking a walk on the airplane aisle is also a good stretching exercise as it allows the blood to flow to all parts. You do not have to fall victim to soreness and aches in a plane anymore, try these simple exercises and you are on your way to a peaceful flight.

Van Persie unsure of contract offer Manchester United forward Robin van Persie admits he does not know whether he will be offered a new contract when his current deal expires in 2016. “It is not up to me - for the moment I am staying here for another 18 months,” said the Dutch international, 31. “That is it really. I can’t look into the future. I don’t know what is going to happen after that. We

shall have to wait and see.” He said he does not think he has scored often enough this season. His tally of eight goals in 21 appearances in 2014-15 means he is unlikely to rival his totals - 30 and 18 goals respectively - in previous two seasons after joining for £24m from Arsenal in 2012. With his contract up at next summer, Van Persie said: “I have

played something like 20 games and I have scored eight goals. I am not happy with that.” The Dutchman accepts his share of responsibility for United’s overall record of five goals in their last six games. The latest blank came in their FA Cup draw at League Two side Cambridge United on Friday. “We are not scoring enough goals,” Van Persie said.

Returning Kisorio targets global title Mathew Kisorio is hungry to win the national title that will grant him a ticket to the World Cross championships to be held in Guiyang, China in March. Kisorio who lost his first local race after completing two-year doping ban will be aiming to win the world cross for the first time after finishing fourth at the 2011 event held in Punta Umbria, Spain. The former African junior 5,000m and 10,000m champion will however have to battle it out with top athletes including Geoffrey Komworor, a former junior world cross champion who beat him at Saturday’s Police championships, when the national trials will be conducted February 14 at Nairobi’s Uhuru Garden. “It was a good race but I did not want to push myself very hard. My biggest target was to get into the top six and earn a qualification for the national trials. I want to tell Geoffrey and other competitors to prepare for a tough battle. “The national title has eluded me in the past four events but I want to go down and wrestle it. If I qualify for the World Cross, I will do my best to bring a medal home,” the 26-year-old declared after clocking 37:38.33 at the annual event held at Nairobi’s Ngong’ Racecourse.

I’d change the man, Murray floors kyrgios to enter not decision to cheat, 15th grand slam semi-final says Armstrong Shamed cyclist Lance Armstrong believes the time is coming when he should be forgiven for doping and lying - he says he would probably do it again. Armstrong, 43, was stripped of his record seven Tour de France titles and banned from sport for life by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (Usada) in August 2012. “If I was racing in 2015, no, I wouldn’t do it again because I don’t think you have to,” he said. “If you take me back to 1995, when doping was completely pervasive, I would probably do it again.” Speaking in his first television interview since confessing to Oprah Winfrey that he had used performance-enhancing drugs during his career. Armstrong had been the subject of doping allegations since he returned from cancer in 1996 to dominate one of the world’s toughest events from 1999 to 2005.

He aggressively denied the claims until Usada’s 200-page “reasoned decision” - complete with 1,000 additional pages of evidence was released in October 2012. Armstrong finally confessed in a two-part interview with US talkshow host Winfrey in January, 2013. He was forced to step away from the cancer charity he had founded and has since kept his counsel, save for a handful of print interviews. Speaking in his hometown of Austin, Texas, Armstrong said “the fallout” from his confession had been “heavy, tough, trying and required patience”. The father-of-five said his life had “thinned out” and “slowed from 100mph to 10”, but added he would like to return to “50, 55”. As for whether the world was ready to accept his return to public life, Armstrong said: “Selfishly, I would say ‘yeah, we’re getting close to that time.”

Andy Murray marched into his 15th grand slam semi-final after eliminating home boy Nick Kyrgios’ in the Australian Open on Tuesday. Murray will play Czech Tomas Berdych in the semi-finals in Melbourne after eliminating Kyrgios 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. The Scot stamped his authority early breaking the serve of Kyrgios to go up 4-2, and eventually taking the first set 6-3. The second set went on serve with Kyrgios only taking a few points from the Murray serve. In a tight tie-break Kyrgios successfully challenged a line call to equal 5-5 but Murray then took the next two points to claim a second successive net. Murray took a break 4-2 up in the third set before Kyrgios came back to break the Scot for the first time of the night and level at 4-4. But Murray proved too strong in the end, breaking the Australian again to secure a straight-sets victory. The pair’s only previous clash was at the Canadian Masters in Toronto last year in which Murray had a comfortable straightsets win. Kyrgios, 19, was the only Australian Open men’s quarter-finalist ranked outside the top eight.

On his way to the quarter-finals he beat Federico Delbonis, Ivo Karlovic, Malek Jaziri and then Andreas Seppi in the fourth round. In reaching the Australian Open last eight, Kyrgios became the first teenager since Roger Federer in 2001 to reach two major quarterfinals. Murray accounted for Yuki Bhambri, Marinko Matosevic, Joao Sousa and Grigor

He’s a huge hitter so I tried to keep it out of his strike zone but it was very windy so if you use the slice and keep the ball low, it makes it very tricky.”

have since drawn one and lost three games under Carver. “The head coach will be a long-term appointment that will play a major role in shaping the future on-field progression of Newcastle United,” the statement added. “It is vitally important that we get the right individual.” Carver said: “This is a proud day for me. I have worked with, and learnt from, the best manager that this football club has had in Sir Bobby Robson. I know what this club means to this city and its people.

Safety queries as Guinea advance Equatorial Guinea’s advance to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations has created a potential safety dilemma for local organisers. The hosts shocked neighbours Gabon 2-0 on Sunday to finish second in Group A. The team will now play a quarter-final match against Tunisia in Ebibeyin on Saturday.

But there are concerns that the recently-built 5,000-capacity stadium is too small for the huge crowd expected for the match. The tournament witnessed spectators breaking through fences at the opening game in Bata on January 17 with the 35,000-capacity stadium overflowing. At other venues, segregated

areas for VIPs and media have been overrun at times by supporters, with police battling to gain control of the situation. In Ebibeyin, organisers are using recruits from a nearby police college to provide security with assistance from officers from Angola - a force of 350 has come from Luanda to help Equatorial Guinea.

Moving the quarter-final to a larger venue would be unprecedented but is likely to be discussed by the Confederation of African Football and the organisers. Authorities could be looking to play the match at Bata Satdium, the largest venue in the country. Bata will host the finals on February 8.

Mauritius pick Didier Six as new tactician Mauritius have named Didier Six their new head coach and national technical director. The 60-year-old former France international and Togo tactician has been set a goal of winning gold at Indian Ocean Island Games in August. Sports Minister Yogida Sawmynaden confirmed the appointment of Six, who will receive Sh900,000 a month.

Sawmynaden said: “This has been done with a view to sustaining the professionalization of football.” Six has also been tasked with qualifying the team for the Cosafa Cup, the CHAN and the Africa Cup of Nations 2017. The Frenchman has experience of high-level football in Africa, having led Togo to the quarter-finals of the Nations Cup in 2013.

Wigan winger joins MLS side Chicago Fire Shaun Maloney has left Championship strugglers Wigan for MLS side Chicago Fire for an undisclosed fee. The 31-year-old Scotland international’s three-and-a-half-year spell at Latics included an FA Cup triumph. He scored 15 times in 91 appearances in all competitions. “Sometimes you have to recognise that a move is for the benefit of all

parties,” said Wigan boss Malky Mackay. “Shaun is near the end of his contract and we had to make a decision.” Maloney, who has 37 Scotland caps, joined Wigan from Celtic in August 2011. He won FA Cup in 2013 with the club after beating Manchester City in the finals before being relegated from the Premier League in the season.

SECURITY HEADACHES: Equatorial Guinea defeated neighbours Gabon 2-0 to quality for the 2015 CAN quarter finals. The qualification has created a potential safety dilemma for tournament organisers.

RALLYING TROOPS: DR Congo striker Cedrick Mabwati jumps over Tunisia midfielder Yassine Chikhaoui during the 2015 African Cup of Nations group B football match in Bata. Yassine has urged colleagues to brace up for the quarterfinal clash against Equatorial Guinea.

Tunisia captain Yassine Chikhaoui has rallied his team to brace up for their Afcon quarterfinal clash with hosts Equatorial Guinea in Ebebiyin on Saturday. Chikhaoui expects the Guineans to get the backing of the 12th man. Which is why he has asked teammates to give undivided attention to the quarterfinal game if they intend to “go far in the tournament.” But the Tunisian midfielder also spoke on his team’s performance against DR Congo in their last group match in Bata. He said though the Carthage Eagles made it through to the last eight on the strength of their 1-1 draw with Congo, he says it was

not the best from the team. “We did not play badly in the match since the most important thing was to qualify for the next stage. In this match against DR Congo our physical rate was better than in the matches against Cape Verde and Zambia and that is very good. I hope we will be better in the next match,” Chikhaoui said after the game on Monday. “Now we will play against the host team, and their fans will support them but we need focus to win the game and go far in the tournament.” Tunisia have won the Afcon just once in 2004 when they defeated North African rivals, Morocco 2-1.

Algeria, Ghana advance Algeria clinched a place in the last eight at the Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-0 win over Senegal that eliminated their opponents in their Group C match on Tuesday. A superb late Nabil Bentaleb goal wrapped up the victory after an early Riyad Mahrez goal set the Algerians on their way, leaving Senegal, who needed a draw to advance, heartbroken. Andre Ayew scored a late goal to put Ghana into the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals as Group C winners. Ayew bravely headed home Baba Rahman’s left-wing cross after his side had earlier looked like being eliminated. Mandla Masango had given South Africa the lead with possibly the goal of the tournament when he scored a spectacular volley from 25 yards. Ghana piled on the pressure after the break and substitute John Boye drove home an equaliser before Ayew struck. With 17 minutes remaining, Ghana were on the way home as they trailed 1-0 but Boye’s equal-

iser gave them hope and then Ayew’s strike confirmed they would finish ahead of Algeria, who qualified with them after beating Senegal 2-0, on head-tohead record. On Sunday, Ghana will play the Group D runners-up in Mongomo while Algeria face the Group D winners in Malabo. The defeat sends Senegal out of the tournament following Ghana’s victory in Mongomo after late goals from John Boye and Andre Ayew cancelled out Mandla Masango’s opener and sent Avram Grant’s side into the quarter-finals. The quarter-final involving the host Equatorial Guinea has been moved from the small town of Ebebiyin to the country’s biggest city, Bata. The quarter-final in Mongomo would be moved to Malabo, the capital city. “These two pitches have been adversely affected by a combination of wear and tear from the six games played or to be played in each of them, and the unstable weather conditions seen lately,” CAF said in a statement.

WE’RE IN: Andre Ayew wheels away after heading in Ghana’s second goal to send the Black Stars into the last eight stage of the AFCON 2015.

King Wanga on target for Al Merreikh on matchday 1 of Sudan Premier League Kenyan international striker Allan Wanga (pictured) was on target for his Sudanese side Al Merreikh who beat Al Rabta Kosti 3-1 as the Sudani Premier League season kicked off on Tuesday. Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Al Rabta Kosti opened the scoring for Merreikh, the visiting team, on the 7th minute before Salah Ibrahim equalised at half hour mark. Going into the break, the teams were on a 1-1 stalemate. Mohamed Abdel Moneim gave Merreikh a new lead six minutes into the second half, before Wanga sealed the victory on the 87th minute through a superbly placed spot kick. Wanga thanked the Almighty for the great

day and promised to work even harder. “I thank God for the great start of the season, for the win and for the goal,” said Wanga. The win propelled Merreikh to the top of the league table, where they sit in front of Khartoum-3, Al Amal and Hilal Al-Fasher. Wanga has been in terrific form since joining the Sudanese side in June 2014 on a Sh10 million move. One week ago, the former AFC Leopards player netted a goal as his team beat Uganda’s KCC 2-1 in an international friendly match. He is almost assured of a start in German Coach Michael Kruger’s next task against Merikh Kosti on Saturday. Branislav Ivanovic’s extra-time winner sent Chelsea into the Capital One Cup final at Wembley after a thrilling semi-final second leg against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Ivanovic headed home three minutes into extra time to settle an enthralling encounter in which Liverpool made a full contribution but paid the price for missed opportunities. Chelsea were favourites after a 1-1 draw at Anfield in the first leg - but Liverpool were true to the word of manager Brendan Rodgers and played without fear,

seeking their first trophy since winning this competition in 2012. And Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who missed Ivanovic’s decisive goal as he was in a heated debate with fourth official Phil Dowd, showed how much another trip to Wembley meant to him by celebrating wildly with his staff at the final whistle. It was a result that helped banish Chelsea’s embarrassment of losing 4-2 at home to League One Bradford City in the FA Cup fourth round in their previous outing.
