Duale: There is corruption in government

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale. He has admitted endemic corruption in all arms of government.

It has been confirmed that the three Arms of government are corrupt” – these were the words of Majority Leader in the National Assembly Aden Duale during a briefing with journalists in his office over pertinent national issues. The outspoken Garissa Town MP said it was time Kenyans acknowledged that there were challenges and

that there was need for urgent action. “Corruption is now endemic in all institutions and I am sure even corruption is in the private sector because it does business. But the spotlight should be on the independent institutions that have the constitutional mandate to fight it,” he added. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Graft rife in State offices: Duale

From Page 1

He said the fact that several Cabinet Secretaries and State officers had stepped aside was evidence of corruption in the Executive, adding that the Parliament was set to commence the debate on the Public Accounts Committee audit of the Judiciary accounts which also had a ‘tale to tell’. Duale also cited reports from the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) which stated Parliament was unable to account for Sh500 billion said to have been lost through fraudulent payments to suppliers of goods over three years. “I have seen how corruption has penetrated the Judiciary – it is no longer an exclusive occurrence for a single institution. Parliament which is supposed oversight is also a culprit, when you look at the Auditor Generals’ report, it is damning,” he stated. Already the Ethics and AntiCorruption Commission (EACC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have taken up the matter and are expected to initiate action on

those found culpable. Responding to a question over whether the government had given up on the anti-graft fight, Duale strongly went on the defence, instead ‘pointed fingers’ at the Auditor General, the Controller of Budget, the office of the DPP, the DCI and EACC. “The Jubilee coalition is not in charge of the Legislature and Judiciary, this Constitution has provided five institutions independent of three Arms of Government, in fact they only report to Parliament,” he reiterated. He, however, absolved the government from blame over the issue, saying fingers should be pointed at institutions with constitutional mandates to deal with the vice. He said President Uhuru Kenyatta had showed his commitment to the fight by suspending Cabinet secretaries and State officials linked to corruption, adding that those individuals would not resume work until they are cleared. “Some of the CSs were very close to the President his deputy and to date, they are still under investigation and until

they are cleared, no one will come back,” he said. Duale dismissed reports linking the reported cash crunch to corruption, saying there was no shortage. He said the money issues were brought about by the transition from one financial year to

Ghai slams State over human rights violation, hitches The government has been accused for a dismal performance in the promotion of human rights in the country. Speaking today morning at a Nairobi Hotel during the launch of Democracy and Human Rights Programme, Katiba Watch Institute director Prof. Yash Pal Ghai said the Jubilee administration has failed to enhance and protect human rights. “There is no commitment at all from the government to champion for human rights, this a disturbing trend especially at this time we are in the dispensation of the new Constitution,” he said. The constitutional lawyer said women rights continue to be abused daily, with case of land grabbing by the high and mighty on the rise as most Kenyans languish in poverty. Ghai said it’s time the civil society and the media used a different method in

helping citizens get their rights as enshrined in the Constitution. “We have to pursue a different method to get our rights either through legal means or engaging the people directly,” he said. Ghai also said things not any better in the political parties as there has been no democracy especially during nominations. “Things are not any better even in political parties where democracy is supposed to be practiced,” he said. Ghai, however, commended Chief Justice Willy Mutunga for the Judiciary, making access to justice easier. “In the Judiciary, there are some hopes, we have seen the Chief Justice try to make access to justice easier, I hope the public will take advantage of this and get their rights,” he said. National Council of Churches general secretary Canon Peter Karanja said

the country’s leadership has failed Kenyans since independence. Karanja said leadership of marginalisation has dominated the country since independence and the rule of law has remain elusive for most Kenyans. “Despite the entrenchment of key principals of governance which calls for involvement of people in the Constitution, leadership of marginalisation continue to thrive in the country,” said Karanja. “The space of basic human rights continue to shrink and the access of the rule of law is no longer accessible to common citizen,” he said. Karanja said the country remains divided along tribal lines ahead of the 2017 General Election. “Before elections there must be a serious engagement between leaders to foster national cohesion,” said Karanja.

At least 25 pc of Kenyan children malnourished According to the Ministry of Health, at least 25 per cent of children below the age of five years in Kenya suffer from stunted growth due to malnutrition, 11 per cent are underweight because they lack enough food and proper nutrition and 14 per cent of children in the same age group in the country are thinner than they are supposed to be. According to Dr Jackson Kioko, head of the Department of Preventive and Promotive Health Services in

the ministry, most of those suffering malnutrition and going without food are from counties in the north eastern region. “The government has put preventive measures to stem malnourishment by providing therapeutic foods to malnourished children and women” Dr Kioko said on Thursday during the launch of National Nutrition Week. He urged stakeholders to help in battling malnutrition and asked institutions like hospitals and prisons to

ensure they also provide well-balanced foods to avoid poor health among patients and prisoners. “Nutrition is not just a health issue but a social issue which requires collaboration” he said. Kenya is battling obesity as well resulting to an increase in non-communicable diseases like cancer, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Kioko attributed this to intake of junk food especially in the urban areas coupled with lack of exercise. Research shows that 25 per cent of women in the reproductive age are battling with overweight or obesity. Speaking at the launch, the Senate Committee on Health chair, Senator Mohamed Kuti (Isiolo) challenged the Kenyan Food Processors to observe world standards in processing of foods and observe the law on fortified food that requires packaged foods to be fortified with basic nutrients as this will help to curb malnutrition. He also called upon clear labeling of the ingredients used and their quantities as it is the right of the consumer.

Who is this man Pombe Magufuli? A

fter a grueling campaign and a tight election early this week, John Pombe Magufuli was last evening declared Tanzania’s President-elect. He beat his closest challenger Edward Lowassa after garnering 8, 882, 935 representing 58.46 per cent to Lowas’s 6, 072, 848, some 39.97 per cent of the total votes cast according to the announcement by Tanzania’s National Electoral Commission (NEC). But who is this man John Pombe Magufuli? The son of a peasant farmer, Magufuli won the election to become Tanzania’s next president on his 56th birthday--so it is the perfect gift for him. “This is a great and important day in my life. It is my birthday and I have been given the mandate to lead the Tanzania people as the President,” he tweeted soon after the declaration from NEC. He was never part of the inner-circle of the governing Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, so it came as a surprise to his critics that he secured its candidature for the presidency. His nomination angered CCM stal-

wart and ex-Prime Minister Edward Lowassa, who crossed to the opposition to challenge Magufuli for the presidency. With the backing of the formidable CCM machinery, Magufuli won with 58 per cent of the votes to Lowassa’s 40 per cent in a fiercely contested election. As Public Works minister in the outgoing government, he was reputed to be a no-nonsense, results-driven politician. He became known as “The Bulldozer” for driving a programme to build roads across the

Traders face tax charges over Sh5m illegal sugar deal Traders accused by Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) of trying to smuggle Sh 5.2 million sugar out of the country have been charged with multiple tax evasion related offences. They are accused of having assisted a company registered in Uganda to transit an illegal consignment of 550 bags of VHP Brazil sugar through the country concealed and undervalued to pass as PVC granules. The prosecution said Maryam Mude, Adan Sheikh, Ali Ismail, Noordin Osman Haji, Hukri Abdi, Adan Abudlahi and Ibrahim Mohammed diverted goods which were in transit and made false declarations to evade taxes. The offences were committed at a yard identified as Mega Yard in Embakasi, Nairobi. It is alleged that on September 5, he suspects diverted the consignment to the said yard which were on transit to Uganda with a dutiable value of Sh5.2 million. Three of the suspects, Mude, Adan and Ismail Adow were charged with assisting Jojemu Plastic industry of Uganda in the diversion of the bags of sugar. The suspects are also accused of making a false entry on September 2 at Autoport Container Freight Station inj Momabas “with intent to defraud.” They allegedly made a customs entry number 2015MSA 5636113 to clear PVC granules instead of VHP Brazil sugar “which was the correct description of the goods in the container number TEMU 2303001 with a dutiable value of Sh2,322,100.” Mude and Sheikh Ahmed further face charges of forging a customs entry number purported to have originated from KRA. Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo was told that on September 5 at Mega transporters garage in Nairobi, jointly with others not before court, they were found to be in possession of the illegal sugar valued at Sh3.9 million. The consignment was found stashed in a lorry, the prosecution said. Ogembo released the suspects on a cash bail of Sh 100,000 with an alternative bond of Sh 500,000. The case will be heard on January 26.

country. Those close to him say he is keen on details and when he embarks on an assignment he pursues it to completion. However, this very trait has cost him friends. His critics say he is very abrasive, and he received a lot of criticism for auctioning off state-owned homes to government employees and the public. Married with five children, Magufuli was born in north-western Tanzania’s Chato district along the shores of Lake Victoria. Once a mathematics and chemistry teacher, he went on to become an industrial chemist and was awarded a doctorate in

chemistry from Dar es Salaam University in 2009. Magufuli is a staunch Catholic who loves singing in the church choir and playing traditional drums. His supporters say he upholds traditional family values, and he campaigned for the presidency on a platform of hard work. He performed push-ups at rallies--sometimes with a microphone in hand to refute allegations by the opposition that he was physically unfit for the top job. A CCM loyalist since 1977, Magufuli was elected MP in 1995. “He was for many years minister for works, supervising execution of mega projects worth trillions of shillings, but was never implicated in any corruption scandal,” Joseph Warioba, a former prime minister and veter-

an CCM politician, told AFP news agency. “He could have been the richest politician in the country.” On the campaign trail, he tried to portray himself as a humble man who came from a poor background. “Our home was grass thatched and like many boys I was assigned to herd cattle, as well as selling milk and fish to support my family,” he said. “I know what it means to be poor. I will strive to help improve people’s welfare,” he added. Magufuli also promised to tackle the endless power shortages Tanzanians face, and to exploit its gas resources for the benefit of the nation. He vowed that he would not tolerate corruption - an issue which drove many voters to support the opposition Ukawa coalition. Some analysts say Magufuli is more popular than the party, which has effectively been in power since independence in 1961, and he will have to purge it of corrupt officials or risk losing credibility. His swearing in ceremony has been slated for Thursday next week.

Road carnage up 6% as 2, 324 are killed in just ten months Road carnage has increased by six per cent in the first 10 months of 2015 compared to the same period last year, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced. NTSA Director General Francis Meja said that 2,324 fatalities have been reported from road accidents in the country since January. The report by NTSA indicates that pedestrian deaths are the highest with 1,009 cases accounting for 43 per cent of the total fatalities. Most of these pedestrian-related accidents occur within Nairobi and its

environs with the city accounting for up to 23 per cent of all the accidents reported. Mombasa Road, Waiyaki Way and Thika Road were the recorded the highest number of road accidents. “It is unfortunate that the gains we had made last year are beginning to reverse. This is partly attributable to lack of enough resources to implement initiatives aimed at reducing road carnage such as the Save 1000 lives,” Meja said. Last year, there was a 9 per cent decline in total road accident fatalities across the country. National Road Safety Trust Found-

ing Trustee Bob Collymore called on all private sector actors to support initiatives aimed at reducing road carnage as part of their Corporate Responsibility. “Road carnage is a serious tragedy that has adverse effects on an individual’s productivity which many a times trickles down to business performance. We continue to lose young people at their prime and we must put this to a stop,” Collymore said. They spoke at a breakfast meeting between NTSA and the National Safety Trust. According to NTSA, most of the accidents are caused by private motorists. He attributed the increase in traffic deaths to lack of respect of traffic rules and lack of enough resources to implement initiatives aimed at reducing road carnage such as the save 1000 lives. The Save 100 lives campaign aims to reduce road accident fatalities by 1000 over a period of two years by mobilizing the private sector to support erection of pedestrian barriers to funnel the pedestrians to designated crossing points, assisted crossing of the road where there are no footbridges by marshals and well-marked pedestrian crossings.

Kihiu Mwiri Suspects may kill witnesses, court told The sixteen suspects held in connection with the infamous Kihiu Mwiri murders may kill potential witnesses if released on bail, a Nairobi court heard yesterday. The DPP, Mr Keriako Tobiko told the court that the apprehension was “ real and not imaginary” as the suspects are already aware of key prosecution witnesses who my be targeted for elimination in light of the murder trail they face. “They reside from the same locality and are members of the Kihiu Mwiri limited company as all the deaths have revolved around the issues arising from the firm,” the DPP said. The court heard that police are still in the process of receiving “vital” info likely to led to the recovery of various firearms that were used to execute four directors if the troubled land buying company. “We are also receiving crucial information likely to lead to the arrest of more suspects, “an affidavit presented in court in objection to the suspects release on bond reads. President Uhuru ordered a speedy investigation and subsequent prosecution of suspects following a trail of kidnappings and murders involving directors if the company. Si far the suspects have been linked to the murders of Mr Peter Kimani Kuria, Mr Paul Muhuhi Bernard, Mr Josphat Kibe Nyoike and Mr Zachary Chege Kiratu. They are also still being investigated for the killings of two other directors and abductions of three others who have, to date, disappeared without trace. The police have singled out Mr Henry Ngugi Karuga, as suspect in the case as having organised for the kidnappings. The DPP told the court that a key witness in the case Mr Peter Karikui Macharia disappeared on July 1 before giving his evidence. ‘The said witness’ vehicle was recovered the following day within Tigoni area having been burnt to ashes and evidence shows he received deaths threats prior to his disappearance,’’ the police affidavit states. Another witness Charles Ngugi Kamau was shot dead on January 18 and his witness statement which was enclosed in a police file was later found to have been pulled out, the court heard. Two other witness have also been eliminated, according to a chronology presented in court and “that the police file in which their statements were enclosed has since gone missing, but we are in the process of reconstructing the same.” “The threats are real,” the DPP said adding that the release of the suspects may prejudice the case. “There is a high possibility that if they are released on bail they will kill and silence the witnesses... their cases before other courts all collapsed due to the elimination of witnesses,” The DPP said.

Dismiss Wa Iria’s petition, Senators urge High Court The Senate has asked the High Court to dismiss a petition by Governor Mwangi wa Iria seeking to bar it from discussing his impeachment following a motion by the Murang’a County Assembly. The Senate urged the court to dismiss the lawsuit and restrain itself from interfering with the legislative House’s constitutional mandate, arguing that it will give the governor a fair hearing and that Iria would then be at liberty to move to court if he will be unhappy with the final decision. High Court judge Joseph Onguto was expected to determine the matter Thursday but pushed the ruling to Tuesday after he heard submissions from both the Senate and the County Assembly. “The petitioner should move to court if he will be aggrieved by the Senates decision,” justice Onguto heard. The Senate argued that it had already formed a special committee to hear and review the impeachment report by the Murang’a County Assembly and had promised to accord the governor fair hearing. “The committee has adopted rules of procedure to be used during the investigation and served invitations to the governor requiring him to appear in person,” stated an excerpt of the response. Fighters quit al-Shabaab ranks as discontent grows in the terror group A high-ranking member and spiritual leader of al-Shabaab has pledged allegiance to ISIS, a move that further fractures the Somalibased jihadi group and spreads the reach of ISIS farther into Africa. The report that formerly UK-based Abdul Qadir Mumin had sworn loyalty to ISIS came from a source familiar with al-Shabaab and was supported by a U.S. intelligence source, who said Mumin’s pledge came in a video that is expected to be released online. In the video, Mumin, along with several other jihadis based in Somalia’s Central Region, swear their allegiance to ISIS. Some known Al-Shabaab members have already done so online. Al-Shabaab’s leadership pledged loyalty to al Qaeda in 2012. The Al-Shabaab-linked source told CNN that members of the group now fear for their lives as other political leaders systematically try to root out possible ISIS supporters within their ranks. Sources within Al-Shabaab say the announcement is not totally unexpected. For weeks, Al-

Shabaab’s secret police, known as the Amniyat, have been arresting and jailing members within the insurgent group who they believed would switch their allegiance from al Qaeda to ISIS. The source close to the jihadi group told CNN from inside Somalia that the situation within the group is “tense,” and likened it to a “state of emergency.” Mumin is thought to be currently based in the mountainous Puntland region of northern Somalia, and thus unlikely to be persecuted or reached by the Amniyat, which operates mostly in southern Somalia. The split is more significant in symbolism than in numbers. Sources within Somalia’s security apparatus estimate that about 100 fighters would likely defect to ISIS, among the estimated 1,400-strong insurgent group. Yet the defections are mostly coming from the younger members, while the older members maintain allegiance to al Qaeda. A Western diplomat inside Somalia told CNN the defection demonstrates a discontent with

the current status quo, and shows that ISIS may be more appealing to younger, more impressionable jihadis. “What does ISIS hold for these disaffected members of AlShabaab?” asked the western diplomat. “What is the ‘wedding gift,’ so to speak? This is about technical expertise and funding. Al-Shabaab’s money streams are being depleted by the current war. ISIS could be seen as really attractive on one hand, and dangerous on another. This is a sort of terrorists’ conundrum.” One analyst explained ISIS’ effectiveness in using modern technology to recruit new members. “Many experts and scholars view (ISIS) as a juggernaut that the international community simply cannot oppose because they use violence so brutally and then disseminate it so effectively over social media in an effort to recruit new members and intimidate opposing forces,” said terrorism expert Max Abrahms, based in the United States.

Al-Shabaab’s leadership, however, is still very much pro-al Qaeda. Its most recent propaganda video, showing a deadly attack on Burundian soldiers fighting for the African Union in Southern Somalia, used quotes from the late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and the group’s current leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri. “This is a subtle way of intimating the leadership’s loyalty to al Qaeda,” says a source close to Somalia’s intelligence service, NISA. Al-Shabaab’s current leader -- Ahmad Umar -- has been described by his followers as ruling with an iron fist, perhaps using the possible ISIS defection as pretext to take out those who have spoken up against the leadership or their policies and suppress opposition. “This ... iron fist policy ... has caused discontent in the ranks of the Mujahideen,” the source close to Al-Shabaab told CNN, referring to foreign fighters. “Many Muhajirs (foreign fighters and members of the diaspora) were trying to leave and the harakah (leadership) is trying to make them stay.”

Wavinya hails tribunal move to suspend CCU officials Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU) party leader Wavinya Ndeti has applauded a decision by the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal to uphold a decision by the party to expel its top leadership after they were found culpable of misappropriating party finances. The tribunal upheld an earlier decision by the party disciplinary committee to de-whip Deputy Party leader Maur Abdallah Mwanamaka, secretary general Ms Veronicah Mativo and Treasurer Titus Kaloki for fraudulently transferring Sh1.94 million from the party’s account to theirs. In a press statement sent to the media, Wavinya, a former Kathiani MP, hailed the Kyalo Mbobu-chaired tribunal for upholding expulsion of the named officials. “Mwanamaka, Mativo and Kaloki failed the integrity and moral probity test after they defrauded the party and will pay for their sins of commission and omission following their expulsion from CCU,” read the statement. “The ruling by the tribunal is a clear message to all CCU members that the rights of all shall be protected and that tribalism, nepotism, discrimination and corruption shall not be entertained in the party irrespective of one’s position,” she said. Wavinya, who is also the chair of the Political Parties Liaison Caucus, called on political parties to observe the rules of moral and financial probity by removing bad elements in their midst to produce leaders of integrity.

ICC prayer rallies halted as politics shift to Eurobond

MPs allied to the Jubilee alliance have been forced to temporarily put on hold their countrywide prayer rallies for Ruto’s case at the ICC and instead focus their attention on the storm surrounding the Sh250 billion Eurobond. Opposition leader Raila Odinga has challenged the government to respond on allegations that some Sh75 billion of the Eujrobond cash cannot be accounted for. And the government is increasingly finding itself pushed to a wall with Mr Odinga repeating his demands on a daily basis. It is understood that Jubilee has opted for a break from the prayer rallies, amid fears that they would be counterproductive in the middle of the Eurobond saga. They fear Raila could be having a hidden card behind his claims and have reportedly asked State House to furnish them with details of the expenditure to respond from a position of information. MPS who spoke to X-news on condition of anonymity said Raila was plotting to gain political mileage from the alleged Eurobond scandal. Last weekend, Jubilee allied legislators were forced to cancel its earlier plans to hold an ICC prayer in Muranga County to study the unfolding events on Eurobond saga with most of its members retreating to their own

constituencies. The Cord leader retreated to Coast region to launch Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani where he accused the government of trading with Sh141 billion of the Eurobond cash. Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wa on Tuesday remained non-commitall on the matter as he could neither deny nor confirm the postponement of the ICC prayer rallies. “We had only taken a break to visit our constituencies after almost five consecutive ICC payer rallies. Remember we were in Nakuru, Mt Elgon, Meru, Ruiru, Narok just the other weekend; we needed a break for us to be revitalised,” said Ichung’wa

However, X-News has since learnt that some Jubilee legislators led by National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale and Deputy Minority leader Dr. Naomi Shabaan last Friday went to State House on instruction by their colleagues to obtain documentation over the government expenditure of the borrowed Eurobond money. The MPs had requested the Office of the President to furnish them with finer details of government spending on the Eurobond loan citing fears that the Opposition might be privy to government usage of the cash. “We want Uhuru to give us the documents of the said Eurobond or explain to us the happenings

surrounding the Eurobond, so that we can respond from an informed point of view” said a source who sought anonymity. A well-placed source in government claimed that Raila may have landed on the details of the Eurobond during his three weeks visit to China and South Kore. The source further says Raila’s body language and his continued persistence that President Uhuru address him directly says a lot and leaves more to be desired. Speaking early this week in Suba, Homa Bay County during the burial of Slermina Ng’ong’o, mother of Suba MP John Mbadi, Raila told the President to stop using Duale to respond to his statements. “When I spoke, I never addressed Duale or the legislature. I address the head of the Executive who is President Uhuru, I challenge him to respond to me directly” said Odinga. However, details have now emerged that despite the persistent discrediting of Odinga’s allegations fears are ripe in government that he (Raila) would want to sustain his efforts to discredit the government and could win majority of Kenyans who are discontented by the state of the economy.

A ‘new Cold War’ of words? WEEKEND EDITION, OCTOBER 30—NOV 1, 2015

Call them provocations, aggressions or mere maneuvers, but the actions by Russia echo the bygone Cold War, ended a quarter century ago, analysts say. Consider this year alone: Russian leader Vladimir Putin announces he’s adding more nuclear missiles and is building a new generation of non-nuclear ones that could strike US soil. Also, Russia’s military intervenes in Syria, more than year after it annexed Crimea in Ukraine. Then there’s the Russian submarines triggering US alarms as they near undersea cables, the Russian warship in waters off the US East Coast, and this week’s Russian reconnaissance planes in the Pacific flying too close to the USS Ronald Reagan--whose namesake president is credited with ending the Cold War. It’s enough to raise a question as provocative as Russia’s conduct itself: Are shades of a new Cold War emerging? “In recent months, press reports and pundits alike have been all too eager to call the current conflict with Russia the ‘Second Cold War,’” wrote American Foreign Policy Council research associate Dmytro Hryckowian. “Indeed, as Russia threatens anew a nuclear buildup and NATO increases its forces in Eastern Europe, the situation seems to have regressed half a century,” Hryckowian wrote in an August op-ed for US News & World Report. But the continuing tensions don’t make for “a new Cold War” because the Kremlin today is more interested in territorial expansion and ultranationalist rhetoric than the Cold War dogma of communist revolution, Hryckowian said. Still, the recent East-West faceoffs have been severe enough for

one analysis to warn of “dangerous brinkmanship” in a report about 40 close military encounters between Russia and the West last year. CNN military analyst Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling said Putin is trying to build a “new Soviet Union,” a Cold War reference to Russia, by intervening in nearby countries and countries farther away. “I think what we’re seeing right now is an attempt by Mr. Putin to go from the strategic defensive to the strategic offense, not only in Ukraine, not only in Syria, but other places like Moldova, threatening Poland, threatening the Baltic,” Hertling said. “So, you’re going to see continued

emphasis by Mr. Putin to go places where Russia has not gone before to strengthen their empire and perhaps even bring back what many people are calling the new Soviet Union,” Hertling said. Earlier this month, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter declared Russia “a serious challenge” and said its “aggressions” are “a new reality for us.” “We will take all necessary steps to deter Russia’s malign and destabilizing influence, coercion and aggression,” Carter told the Association of the U.S. Army annual Convention. “This is a new reality for us strategically, and it looks like it’s here to stay.”

Carter accused Russia of undermining the sovereignty of neighboring countries and destabilizing European security by annexing Crimea. In the Syrian civil war, the Russian military has stepped up its presence by land, air and sea, and Russian officials have contended their weaponry is targeting ISIS extremists and their infrastructure. “The goal is terrorism. And we are not supporting anyone against their own people. We fight terrorists. As far as I understand, the coalition announced ISIL and other associated groups as the enemy. And the coalition does the same as Russia,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey

Lavrov said. But some analysts liken the Syria conflict to an emerging proxy war between Russia and the United States, just like in the old days of the Cold War. “We’re back to the geostrategic chess board, and this is Russia’s move. They put a knight into the Middle East, so to speak. A chess piece. They pole-vaulted over Turkey, and now they’ve got their base established,” said former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Wesley Clark. US officials have accused the Kremlin of using its military to support Syrian ally and President Bashar al-Assad and targeting antiregime rebels.

up big banks has been given a shot in the arm after Brussels legislators agreed a preliminary deal following months of deadlock and fierce lobbying from the financial industry. The accord will revive fears among Europe’s largest banks that the plans, which they have virulently opposed and were beginning to hope might be abandoned, could make it into law after a deal was hammered out late on Wednesday by representatives of the European parliament’s large centreright and centre-left groups.

Kenya Power in Sh12bn profit as firm moves to connect more

Kenya Power technicians at work. The government has embarked on an exercise that will see 70 per cent of the population connected to the national grid.

Kenya Power has posted a pre-tax profit of Sh12.25 billion citing an increase of 11 per cent for the year leading up to June 2015. The announcement follows an ambitious move by the government to ensure that 70 per cent of the population have access to electricity by 2017. Currently, as many as 20 million out of about 45 million people are not connected to the national grid. Kenya Power, which is tasked with the transmission, distribution and retail of electricity throughout the country, has however, cited increased sales and a growing economy as the linchpin for their profit. As the sole electricity distribution company in

Volkswagen makes sales despite pollution scandal Volkswagen’s sales of Volkswagen brand vehicles in the United States have grown slightly in October, the first full month since the emissions scandal broke, two people familiar with the matter said. The German carmaker is offering discounts on new models and other incentives in the world’s second largest auto market, which have helped to offset a sales ban on diesel models enacted last

month when VW’s rigging of emissions tests became public, said the people with knowledge of the sales data. One of the people cautioned this trend figure could still change as dealers often don’t report sales until the last day of the month which still has two selling days to come. However VW deliveries were up 0.6 per cent in September hitting 26, 141 cars though a spokeswoman for VW of America declined comment.

Almost six weeks after it admitted using illegal software to falsify US diesel emissions tests, VW is under pressure to identify those responsible, fix up to 11 million affected vehicles and convince regulators, investors and customers it can be trusted again. The biggest business crisis in its 78-year history has wiped more than a quarter off VW’s stock market value, forced out its long-

time chief executive and tarnished a business held up for generations as a model of German engineering prowess. A majority of VW car owners in the US have switched from diesel to petrol-driven models this month with demand for the Passat and Jetta particularly strong, the people said. VW brand’s diesel models accounted for 22 per cent of last year’s 366,970 US deliveries.

Deutsche Bank to cut 15,000 jobs The Deutsche Bank has said it will cut 15,000 jobs as it announced a thirdquarter £4.3 billion (Sh 481.6 billion) loss, the BBC reports. Germany’s biggest bank said it would cut 9,000 full-time jobs and 6,000 contractor roles. It is also planning to sell businesses employing 20,000 people over the next two years. By 2018, “we expect to see the benefits of our hard work and potentially be in the midst of a powerful turn-around,” said John Cryan, co-chief executive.

The cuts represent just less than 15 per cent of the firm’s total workforce. The bank’s shares fell 5.5 per cent in Frankfurt trading. Deutsche is trying to cut €3.8bn (Sh4256bn) of annual costs as European banks struggle with sluggish economic growth in their home markets and stricter regulation. In times of low growth, reducing costs through job cuts is seen as a way to improve profits. The bank also plans to spin off Postbank with a stock market

listing and sell its 20 per cent stake in China’s Hua Xia Bank. It has also said it will stop dividend payments for 2015 and 2016. Cryan told a news conference that the bank faced “hard decisions” as it was restructured. “We must reduce Deutsche Bank’s complexity,” he added. The bank said it would close businesses in Malta, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Finland, Peru, Uruguay, Denmark, Norway, and New Zealand. Some branches in Germany would close as well, Cryan said.

Kenya, the firm has been in an uphill battle with insufficient resources, making it impossible to provide a frequent and stable supply of power to its consumers. The firm has been using power rationing as a means to counter its inefficiencies, thereby resulting in rolling blackouts across the country. The company’s power line infrastructure has also faced problems due to ongoing upgrades, failing transformers and fallen transmission lines, among other logistical concerns. However, Kenya Power has managed to meet certain targets in terms of power supply and production. The government’s new forays into the geothermal and wind power sectors are

set to reduce the frequency of blackouts while driving down the cost of electricity for consumers. Earlier this month, the company announced that it had set aside Sh10 billion to mitigate the effects of the El Nino rains, which have caused a series of blackouts over the past few days. At the time, Kenya Power Managing Director Dr Ben Chumo assured customers that the rains will not affect power supply as much as it happened in other years. Despite these challenges, the company, has seen its electricity sales revenues rise to Sh77.83 billion in the year leading to June 2015, which represents a jump of 24 per cent.

BIZ BRIEFS Tourism sector won’t see ‘real’ growth until 2016

Kenya’s tourism sector is on the track to recovery but may not see any real results until 2016, sector stakeholders have saidd. Recent reports had shown that the industry will be jumpstarted as soon as tourism numbers begin to rise in December, Kenya’s peak season from the sector. Major players, including the Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF), have welcomed a move by the United Kingdom to remove its travel advisories for a number of popular destinations ahead of the holiday season. The UK has lifted its warnings for all but essential travel to Malindi and Watamu. While the announcement is welcome news to sector stakeholders, experts have warned that the industry is a far cry from where it should be given that the festive season is only weeks away. Kenya Tourism Federation Acting Chief Executive Susan Ongalo says the impact will likely be felt in the early months of 2016.

Government makes easier for lenders to get clients’ info Kenya has improved access to credit information by passing legislation that allows the sharing of positive information and by expanding borrower coverage. Over the past year, the government has set up systems that allow lenders to access and share information about potential borrowers based on their credit history. The moves have been lauded by the World Bank and termed progressive. The initiatives have, in fact, contributed to Kenya’s placement it the lenders survey, which cited the country as one of the top 10 developing nations in the world that had made efforts to improve its business environment. Kenya has quickened the pace of its business reforms over the past 12 months to make it easier for borrowers to access loans and lenders to vet their clients, the bank revealed in a statement released earlier this week. The move joins a raft of other initiatives that are set to spur development, create employment and boost the economy.

Twitter advertisement sparks confusion, uproar among users Twitter, one of the world’s leading social media platforms, has released its faster ever advertisement, causing it’s users to spark a debate over the effectiveness of its marketing abilities. The company has been struggling to attract large numbers of new users to its network, a problem which some say is because of the slightly obscure nature of the platform. The ad in question featured a series of tweets that alluded to Baseball, a popular sport in the US with a rather strong following in other countries like Japan. Users appeared to be baffled by the ad and many responded by tweeting their concerns. Speaking to the BBC, Mr Nimeh said that growth had slumped to less than 20 per cent early in 2015.

Rates on loans will fall, Rotich assures Kenyans

Despite a sharp rise in interest rates, the cost of loans is set to fall, Finance Minister Henry Rotich has said. Speaking on Thursday to members of the National Assembly’s Budget Committee, Rotich assured consumers that steady inflation and cautionary systems were in place to make sure the interest rates come down. In a bid to support a weakening shilling, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) raised its benchmark lending rate to 11.50 per cent. The move was a blow to consumers as local lenders base their rates on the CBK’s benchmark, usually charging higher fees for loans as the Central Bank’s yardstick rises. Rotich said that the underlying factors to ensure interest rates come down are stable, adding that the steady inflation, which has lingered at about 6 per cent so far, would help lower the rates. Stakeholders have lodged complaints concerning high interest rates on commercial loans, which are preventing investment and expansion

National Treasury Cabinet secretary Henry Rotich. He has assured that mechanisms have been put in place to ensure inflation is stabilised

by local firms. Many of these organisations provide employment to thousands of Kenyans and their stifled growth signals a major blow to the country’s job market. The government has sought external funding to avoid driving

local rates up further through a two-year, $750 million (Sh76 billion) syndicated loan. The government secured a rate of 5.7 per cent on the loan despite consumers paying up to four times that amount on personal and business loans from local

lenders. Finance Ministry Principal Secretary Kamau Thugge said yesterday that the government would use the funding to avoid driving local rates up any further.

Innovative systems Chase Bank in pact answer to queries of with Safaricom to smallholder farmers boost for SMEs The National Farmers Information Service (NAFIS) has set up systems to dispatch market information to farmers’ mobile phones an initiative that will boost agriculture sector among small holder farmers. Since its establishment, the system has been upgraded by Extension Officers and it has already reached 2.1 million smallholders farmers countrywide informing them on the market trend for their produce though it has a capacity to reach 4.5 million farmers. This comes at a time when small holder farmers in Africa are dying in poverty due to poor market information for their produce, a study by the Agricultural Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) confirms. Poor infrastructure linking village farmers to the world, poor and lack of government policies regarding smallholder farmers were identified as key obstacles towards farmer’s economic traction. The system has received a positive approach as a result of the high mobile phone penetration within the country which currently stands at 80 per cent according to the Communication Authority of Kenya reaching a majority of smallholder farmers who lack access to internet. A research conducted by IFAD concluded that extreme poverty

can be eradicated with double digits only if agriculture stakeholders and government creates a conducive environment to enable smallholder farmers participate effectively in global market. The report revealed that 85 per cent of smallholder farmers lack information and connectivity to lucrative markets at provincial, national and global levels hence resort to subsistence farming and local markets which buys their produce at a throw away price. In Kenya for instance, small scale maize farmers end up selling their produce to middlemen at a loss of up to 40 per cent, according to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB). Rose Andaje, NCPB Corporate Affairs manager acknowledged that poor infrastructure was inflating the cost of doing business especially in the agricultural sector. She said poor road network and low internet connectivity which leads to a wide market information gap especially for rural farmers is the major hindrances to agricultural growth. Apart from offering market information, NAFIS also allows farmers to obtain other extensional farming information from virtual agricultural extension officers.

Chase bank has partnered with Safaricom to launch a service that will boost the efficiency of business by aggregating all their banking services and making them accessible through a mobile phone. Mobile2Bank, the first of its kind in Kenya, will allow business to make payments and collections directly to their bank accounts enabling them access loans and move funds from one lipa na M-pesa till to another in real-time. ‘’This product demonstrates how innovation in the mobile space can be harnessed to address some of the common pain-points in businesses. With Mobile2Bank business, SMEs will no longer need to make physical withdrawal of cash from bank accounts to make payments to third parties enhancing their efficiency, ‘’ said Paul Njaga, CEO Chase Bank.

Safaricom chief executive officer Bob Collymore said mobile money has been the most positive development and mobile2bank launch today illustrates that “we can still do more through strategic partnership.” The main beneficiaries of the product are M-pesa agents who will be able to move floats between their tills and bank accounts as well as accessing loans that will boost operations through Mobile2Bank. This comes at a time when Kenya has been ranked top five African countries with fastest growth in telecommunication, infrastructure and mobile innovations with mobile telephony being the engine behind the rapid growth. Mobile penetration in Kenya is currently at 82.6 per cent 33.6 million subscriber proving that mobile phone is fast becoming an important tool in transforming SMEs lives.

Born and bred in Kisumu Nyalenda before relocating to Nairobi the smooth rapper is finally finding his niche. He has recently released a feel good song Zambarurera featuring Obinna. This is his story…

W

ho is Nebulazz? Nebulazz is a multitalented artiste born and raised in Kisumu. I grew up listening to music legends like the late E-SIR, Nameless, Nyashinski, 2Pac, Notorious Big & Jay Z. Their music encouraged me a lot to pursue music. What is the genre of your music? I can say rap and hip hop. Take us through your career path I used to love music when I was in school, I started participating in open mic platforms and Music talent searches. When I realized that I had talent, I decided to seek out a recording label and pursue music as a career. It has not been easy but we keep working hard every day to achieve our goals. What or who inspires your music? My inspiration comes from happenings around me, in the society and in my personal life, from good time’s #Zambarurera to crazy ones #TuitionTeacher (hehehe) Who is your producer and why? I have worked with different music producers but currently I am recording at Pacho ENT with the one and only CEDO. Why CeDO? Well First, he’s one of the best producers in Eastern Africa,

he understands my music and knows what I want. I get the results I anticipated whenever I work with him. As an artiste, do you see the music industry as profitable? Yes it is. As long as you produce good music and the fans love it, it will pay. However musicians need to hone their craft and let business managers make money for them. Tell us about your latest release ‘Zambarurera’ I went to the studio to do a remix of my song Tuition Teacher, Cedo made me a beat, we listened to the beat with Obinna who features in Zambarurera he liked it, then we came up with Zambarurera instead. It was a spur of the moment thing, utterly infectious. Zambarurera is a feel good music. ‘Zamba’ means dance, rurera is the feel good effect. It’s one of those songs that should set you free. What has been the highlight of your career? Participating in the Safaricom Live concerts Kenyan tour in 2011 was a great experience. My award winning moment in 2012 with Tuition Teacher’ as the best song (VIBEZ AWARDS) and Winning the Celtel Uhuru live talent search in 2007 stand out. However, I am happy with the direction I am taking currently by exploring new genres and collaborating with big names in the industry. What advice would you give to up and coming music artistes? Never give up, never lose hope, be good or be good at it!

One way which yOu can test the quality Of yOur furniture is by lifting the furniture at One cOrner and shaking it with fair thOrOughness

When buying furniture….

P

The end of the year presents us with thoughts of redecoration. However before jumping the gun and buying anything on sale here are some tips to make your experience worthwhile.

racticality We all want king size furniture to prove our class to our visitors, but buying an extremely large couch or bed for a tiny house such as a bedsitter is not practical because of space limitations. For this purpose, it is advisable to obtain a measuring tape and determine the exact amount of space in your house that can accommodate furniture, then issue the sales clerk at the furniture store with these dimensions to help you identify the perfect fit. The issue of practicality also involves delivery and installation logistics; it makes no sense buying a huge piece of furniture that will not fit through your front door! Compatibility Unlike in the 90s, today’s home owners are giving more thought into the mix and match factor

in their homes. Before buying furniture, it is advisable to first get the entire room where the furniture will go worked out in terms of color diffusion, lighting and appeal, all which will influence which piece you eventually settle for. If this is too complicated for you, you can always contract the services of an interior designer who will advise you on color, depth and design selection once you get to the furniture store. Remember you want the furniture in your house to stand out tastefully. Durability How long will the furniture endure use within your house? This is the question you need to keep at the back of your mind when shopping for furniture. Even as a first time home owner, you want to buy quality pieces such that you don’t have to go furniture shopping again. One way which you can test

the quality of your furniture is by lifting the furniture at one corner and shaking it with fair thoroughness. If it feels even the slightest bit shaky, take a pass. If you do most of your sitting in the living room, opt for seats and couches with thick foam cushions which will last you a lifetime. Suitability Most furniture pieces cost a fortune, so you need to be completely sure that what you take home doesn’t put you off after a week. When shopping don’t be shy, try sitting and lying on the furniture at the store in your best relaxation position to ascertain that indeed, the piece is just what you need. Even if other shoppers at the store make fun of you, they won’t be laughing so hard once they see how perfect the furniture you eventually take home fits your lifestyle!

The catch is ‘how mad can you get?’ The maddest look gets a 1.75L Ciroc bottle on the night! Every hour a resident Mad Scientist will pick out a few lab rats to experiment on with ‘Ciroc Shooters’. The madder you are, the higher the chance! Now that we are talking shots here are the seven must do guides of how to shoot up that liquor. Know your Shot Given that there are number of drinks that can act as a shot be it Tequila a Zappa or a Ciroc, know how each shot is taken. Does it require salt, what’s the after taste? Will I need a lemon immediately, is it nauseating immediately after the shot?

Out&About Knowing the shot will not leave you dumbfounded, confused and worse scaring the other fun lovers. Sipping or Smelling is not allowed A shot is not sipped and neither is it smelled. You simply raise your shot glass cheers and boom! Down your throat it goes. We must emphasize this, take the shot at once, never twice. Staring at everyone taking the shot is a no, no… While at the moments of just about to take the shot, don’t stare at every one, otherwise you will look like a zombie on attack mode. Don’t take a shot during a love song This is another No! When a love song is playing don’t interrupt to have you and your friends take shots. This might be the moments some love birds were waiting for. So

don’t spoil the moment they have been waiting for all night long. These are not Selfie moments Selfies. Selfies for keeping those live moments for the future are allowed but not during and after taking the shot. People’s faces are truly ‘sacred’ immediately after the shot. Don’t take shots in plastic tumblers It’s ok to down your beer from a tumbler but not ok to demand a shot in one. This kills the whole logic of clicking glass and the short shot glass effect. Get it right. Don’t belch after the shot And finally, immediately after the shot it’s not allowed to unleash that burning gas in front of everyone. Hold it or excuse yourself and get far away from your friends.

PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 Gadgets and new devices that are supposed to make it easier to accomplish certain tasks may actually cause more confusion. You’re often a big fan of doing things the old-fashioned way. Even though people may laugh at you, you tend to insist that the old way is the best way.

ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 Be careful about going overboard with your sarcasm. Some people take your comments seriously. Not everyone understands your humor. This could make communication unclear at times. Deliver a straight story without exaggeration or embellishment thrown in to make things juicier. TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 Perhaps you’ve painted a false picture of yourself lately. In an effort to cover your insecurity, you may not have expressed how you feel to some people. When you look in a mirror, you may find that the person you see is quite different than the person other people see. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 The last thing you want to do is be serious. But you’re finding it difficult to get satisfaction from your fantasy world. Your dreams beckon to you, but you’re afraid to give in to that temptation because you feel a strong sense of duty to other people and places. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 You take charge of situations instead of letting them take charge of you. But this sense of independence and self-confidence may threaten other people. This is one of those days when you may feel a few growing pains as shifting personalities clash with comfortable behavior patterns. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 The big problem with the tension today is that one side could be headstrong and bound to the facts and the truth, while the other is bound to a broader perspective, not necessarily a realistic one. Facts could get twisted in all directions depending on who’s delivering them. VIRGO Aug 23-Sep 21 Others’ inconsiderate actions may hurt you emotionally, but they don’t have to. As long as you’re able to maintain a healthy perspective on the situation, you’ll see that many of the behaviors that upset you result from someone else’s insecurities as opposed to their lack of affection for you. LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 You may wonder why everyone can’t just get along. The answer may seem simple to you, with your easygoing attitude. Unfortunately, there are big egos and unrealistic attitudes involved that make it difficult for other people to see things so simply. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 Tension may arise among friends when someone suddenly feels like an ignored third wheel. People tend to pair up. Do what you can to stay on topics to which everyone can contribute equally. Together you’re extremely powerful allies, while divided you’re each other’s worst enemies. SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 - Dec 21 The need for a worldly consciousness and evolving humanity has become more obvious to you as time goes by. These issues come up today, but don’t be surprised if you get a reality check. Your dreams may be unrealistic. Someone could try to burst your bubble, so be careful. Don’t lose sight of your goals.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) presidential aspirant Nick Mwendwa. He has been accused of having interfered with players transfer details and could face disciplinary actions if the claims are confirmed.

Mwendwa risks FKF wrath over players’ transfer particulars Former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Transfer Matching System (TMS) manager Nick Mwendwa risks disciplinary action for anomalies in the players transfer system, FKF has said. Mwendwa, who is also the Kariobangi Sharks chairman and his successor Ronny Oyando have been ordered to immediately hand over the players’ transfer system credentials or face disciplinary measures. FKF secretary general Michael Esakwa directed Mwendwa who was the FKF TMS manager until June before he resigned from his position

to challenge his former boss, Sam Nyamweya for FKF Presidency-to hand over the records to enable the federation address ‘anomalies within the system’. His successor, Oyando also left the federation two months ago and has joined Mwendwa’s campaign team. In a letter addressed to Mwendwa, the federation says “there are numerous, glaring anomalies where several players have been double-signed and entered into the system.” “The players’ registration to two clubs playing in the same league has created acrimony resulting in clubs protests against the FKF Premier League as they accuse the National Office of incompetence,” says Esakwa. International transfer certificates issued to both players signing for clubs in Kenya and outside the country were never sanctioned by the Secretary General as required. “This mayhem has caught the attention of Fifa and as a result players issued with these ITCs are now at risk of having them being revoked.” Esakwa now wants Mwendwa and Oyando to hand over all the information regarding the transfer system or risk disciplinary action by the federation and Fifa.

Kemboi to compete in Beirut marathon Kenya’s Elijah Kiprono Kemboi will attempt the Bank of Lebanon Beirut Marathon course record when the race takes place on November 8 in Lebanon. Kemboi, aware of Sh1 million at stake for the winner, will go for the addition to time bonuses added to that. The 2:11:13 course record, set in 2011 by Ethiopia’s Tariku Jufar, also comes with a hefty bonus, depending on the time posted viz-a-viz the current course record. Should Kemboi run faster than 2:09:00 and prove victorious, it would mean an additional Sh 0.3 million while sub-2:08 would result in a Sh2.5 million in bonus. “I will do my best to improve the current course record. I hear the course is changed in a faster way,” said Kemboi in an interview on IAAF. The race is attracting a higher class of athletes every year and the 31-year-old Kemboi who boast of 2:07:34 personal best should have no trouble challenging for the record.

SPORT 15 WEEKEND EDITION, OCTOBER 30—NOV 1, 2015

Daggers drawn

Loss to Reds could see Mourinho sacked The entire Chelsea playing unit, the technical bench and medical staff will be under pressure when English Premier League champions host Liverpool on Sunday in must win clash. Jose Mourinho has lost half of his 10 league matches this season and six in the past 12 going back to 2014/15 and the Portuguese will come face to face for the first time with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp who registered his first win in three matches since taking over from Brendan Rodgers as manager. The only good news for Mourinho and his boys is that Chelsea will be facing a Liverpool side who have struggled against them in the past six league meetings, the Blues winning half of them and drawing the rest. Furthermore, Liverpool have not enjoyed recent trips to London, going winless on their past five visits to the capital. The two side are only separated by three points though Chelsea are five places in the standings. Interestingly as it has been, both teams will be

seeking their third wins in the season. Liverpool are currently finding their rhythm following two draws, while Chelsea’s last attempt to revive their poor start of the season hit a snag when they lost 2-1 to West Ham last weekend. That said and done, the champions are against a Liverpool team who have been difficult to beat this season, not losing in their past five BPL fixtures and who have lost only once at Stamford Bridge in their past five league visits. Klopp also got the better of Mourinho twice during the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League. Out of four meetings that season Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund had with Mourinho’s Real Madrid, the Spanish side won one, with the Germans advancing past them in the semi-finals. A win for the Blues who may be without Diego Costa will push them to mid table for the first time this season while three points from Stamford Bridge will see Liverpool seventh on the table. Liverpool will be missing Christian Benteke upfront. Leaders Manchester City will entertain

Norwich City as Arsenal, second in the log travel to Wales to face Swansea at Liberty stadium. Manuel Pellegrini’s men are coming off a tough 0-0 draw versus Manchester United in their derby at the Old Trafford last Sunday as neither team blinked in the high-profile affair. City is now tied with Arsenal as both teams have 22 points in the overall standings, but the former retained league leadership by virtue of their superior goal difference. The game, which was the first Manchester derby in the last five years that failed to produce a single goal from both powerhouse squads, tripped City’s two-game winning run. Manchester United who are fourth behind West Ham will face Cristal Palace who are still reeling from a 5-1 loss to Man City in Capital One cup on Wednesday. The last meeting between these two sides ended 2-1 in favour of United thanks to a strike by Marouane Felaini. That goal was all United needed to return back to the Uefa champions league, but the script has since changed.

Wallabies, ALL Blacks FACE OFF in RUGBY final Australia have recalled prop Scott Sio in their only change for Saturday’s World Cup final against cup holders New Zealand. Sio is fit after missing the semi-final win over Argentina with a damaged elbow and replaces James Slipper. Full-back Israel Folau, who has been battling an ankle injury and only lasted an hour against Argentina, has been cleared to play same as Veteran inside centre Matt Giteau, who hurt his groin playing against the Pumas. Giteau, 33, is the lone survivor from Australia’s last World Cup final - the 2003

defeat by England. The Wallabies are preparing for a record-equalling fourth World Cup final. “We will be doing our best to make Australia proud of its rugby team,” said head coach Michael Cheika. With Sio fit, reserve prop Toby Smith is set to miss out. The Wallabies’ match-day squad of 23 has a combined 1,205 caps, compared to New Zealand’s 1,339 caps and are looking to win the World Cup for the third time after previous successes in 1991 and 1999. Defending champions New Zealand have named an unchanged side for this game. Dan Carter, the all-time leading points

scorer in Test history, starts at 10 having missed New Zealand’s triumph in the 2011 final due to injury. “We knew we would have to earn the right to progress so being in the final is very satisfying in its own right, but the ultimate goal has always been to win it,” said head coach Steve Hansen. Five of the New Zealand’s matchday squad of 23 players are set to play their final matches for the All Blacks. Captain Richie McCaw is expected to call time on his record-breaking Test career after the game, although he insisted he has yet to make a decision on his future.

Mighty K’Ogalo to be crowned champions

G

or Mahia will be crowned Champions of the Sportpesa Premier League for a third time in a row at Nyayo National Stadium this Sunday. K’Ogalo face Muhoroni Youth in the final league match, the only team with a chance to break Gor’s unbeaten run. Gor are yet to lose a league match this season, but Muhorini will be the last team to try and break Gor’s ‘hymen’. While Gor will be playing for nothing, but to protect their unbeaten pride and possibly extend their point tally to 78, Muhoroni too will have nothing to lose, but everything to gain if they become the first team to beat Frank Nuttal men this season. The Sugar belt dwellers, fifth on the log with 44points have already qualified for Top 8 tournament next year going into the match. Another

interesting match of the day will be a clash between Chemelil Sugar and Mathare United at Muhoroni Stadium. The slum boys will approach this match cautiously, knowing too well that a win will see them take part in next season’s Top 8 tournament. That dream though will depend on the outcome of a clash between Nakuru All Stars and Ushuru. Ushuru are currently eighth with a single point advantage over Mathare and they just need a draw to book their Top 8 spot but All Stars who are already relegated may want to go to the grass with their heads held high. On the other side, Chemelil must be aware of the directive from Football Kenya Federation that four teams will be relegated. The millers are currently fourth from bottom on the standings and a win will take them a step above Western

Stima who will be at home against relegated KCB. Sony Sugar who are 11th on the table with 34 points and negative three goal difference is not safe either. The Awendobased side will travel to the city to face City Stars at City Stadium at the same time. They are sniffing the relegation region, but still have a chance of booking a Top 8 finish. That though, will have to come at a cost. They must win by at least four goals and hope that Thika United, Mathare and Ushuru who occupies the 10th, 9th and 8th positions loses their matches. This may sound like an uphill task, but the fact that Thika will have relatively tough match against Sofapaka with Mathare facing a side fighting for their survival and Ushuru clashing with someone who has nothing to lose-should give Sony some shreds of hopes.
