Goodluck concedes loss to Buhari in Nigeria poll
O
pposition politician Muhammadu Buhari has praised outgoing Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan as “a worthy opponent” after he conceded defeat in last week’s elections. Jonathan acknowledged defeat in a
written statement to his countrymen. “I thank all Nigerians once again for the great opportunity I was given to lead this country and assure you I will continue to do my best at the helm of national affairs until the end of my tenure,” he said. The Independent National Electoral
Commission is still announcing the final tally in the polls, but early numbers indicate Buhari, now President-elect, has an overwhelming majority of votes. He has hailed his victory as a vote for change and proof the nation has embraced democracy.
Gen Buhari beat Jonathan by 15.4 million to 13.3 million votes. An official tally of the results is expected to be announced later. Observers have praised the election although there have been allegations of fraud.

Goodluck concedes loss to Buhari in Nigeria poll From Page 1 The former military ruler said: “President Jonathan was a worthy opponent and I extend the hand of fellowship to him. “We have proven to the world that we are people who have embraced democracy. We have put the one-party state behind us.” He added: “Your vote affirms that you believe Nigeria’s future can be better than what it is today. You voted for change and
now change has come. “You, Nigerians, have won. The people have shown their love for this nation and their belief in democracy.” On Tuesday, Jonathan said in a statement: “I promised the country free and fair elections. I have kept my word.” He said he had conveyed his “best wishes” to Buhari, and urged “those who may feel aggrieved to follow due process... in seeking redress”.
Buhari ruled Nigeria from late 1983 until August 1985 after ousting his predecessor in a coup The 72-year-old retired major general’s experience as a military ruler has been viewed as a plus or minus in presentday Nigeria. The government has been locked in a deadly battle with the militant group Boko Haram His campaign has focused on security and ending corruption in Nigeria.
Ex-EACC boss says graft list probe needs extra time Former Ethics and AntiCorruption director Patrick Lumumba says investigators require more time to conclude graft allegations against public officers. Lumumba, who is the Director of the Kenya School of Law, said the anti-graft agency should be granted more power to prosecute their cases. “I have never disputed the fact that EACC needs power to prosecute… that way, you will see a different anti-graft body,” he said. President Uhuru Kenyatta while handing over the list containing names of officers named in corruption deals to Parliament last week urged EACC to
conclude investigations in 60 days. “Justice delayed is justice denied,” the President said. But Lumumba believes 60 days is not realistic. “From my experience, the 60 days may not be realistic if some of these investigations have to start at the very basics. But if some cases are just a matter of tielosing the ends then it may work,” he said. He has defended the President for requesting the list to be handed over to him even as the opposition claims the report should have been handed over to the Director of Public Prosecutions. “The law allows the President to request for the report,” he said.
Lumumba has called on MPs to amend the Public Procurement law claiming it has helped rogue public officer to loot public funds. Meanwhile, the commission has requested for an additional Sh2.4 billion allocation to allow it work effectively. The commission claims Parliament has reduced its budget, making it hard to effectively perform. The reduction has resulted in poor staff remuneration, outdated investigative equipment and lack of adequate staffing according to the commission which says that it requires at least Sh3.5b against the proposed allocation of Sh1.54 b in the year 2015/16.
forced out: Cabinet Secretaries Felix Kosgei (below left), Charity Ngilu (above left), Michael Kamau (right) and Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko have stepped outside to pave way for investigations into corruption allegations against them.
Sonko ‘quits’ over Sh46b tender scam Nairobi Senator Gedion Mike Sonko has become the first elected leader to step aside following last week’s order by President Kenyatta for those named in corruption to quit. Sonko announced the decision on his official Facebook page. “I announce that I have forthwith stepped aside as Senator for Nairobi,

Majority Deputy Chief Whip Senate, Member Roads &Transport; National Security & Foreign Relations and Joint Committee on National Cohesion & Equal Opportunity committees. I will vacate my county office, and only return after my name is cleared. Kenya is bigger than Sonko,” he wrote barely minutes to midnight last night.
It is not yet clear whether the Senator was pulling a Fool’s Day prank on his followers or was serious on the update. Sonko is among several elected and Government officials whose names are among 175 people in a list of suspected corrupt public officials under investigation. He is said to have together with Energy
Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir influenced awarding of a Sh46.14 billion tender for the Kenya Pipeline Company from which they reportedly plotted to share Sh1b. “I have learnt with surprise and dismay that my name is included in the list of the people being investigated by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on
their report dated 20th March 2015, allegedly over a tender at the Kenya Pipeline Company. I have no influence over KPC and its procurement system,” Sonko said. Other Senators in the list are James Orengo (Siaya) and Johnstone Muthama of Machakos.
Do you think Buhari will do a better job in dealing with Boko Haram than Goodluck?
Jesse Karanja Mwangi
Simon Chirchir I don’t really know but Goodluck was not able. Girls from a whole school were kidnapped and he only talked about it after two months. Let us see what the new government will do. Buhari may be better and we cannot discredit him without giving him a chance.
Mbugua Lawrence It is just going to be the same unless things change. The new president can do better because he was in the military. Let us give him chance to see if he can deal with Boko Haram.
The minute they elected him the menace ended. Boko Haram do not want a Christian president so they have a Muslim at the helm and are likely to cool off. Now there may be peace and Nigeria may not experience disturbances again.
Emmanuel Karukutiang He can because he was in the army so he is best placed to deal with Boko Haram. He knows the loopholes of the militants. Our own Nkaissery was in the Army and is better placed at dealing with security issues.

List of shame: 21 CEOs named in corruption list Up to 21 heads of State Corporations are among officers who appear on the ‘list of shame’ authored by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and presented to Parliament by President Uhuru Kenyatta. National Social Security Fund (NSSF) Managing Trustee Richard Lang’at, Property development manager Mutemi Nzau and the General Manager Finance and Investment Gideon Kyengo are being investigated for allegations that they irregularly approved a budget of over Sh5 billion for the development of the Tassia II housing scheme and awarded the tender to a Chinese company. The Geothermal Development Company is being probed for procurement irregularities, financial improprieties and gross staff management in its three projects valued at Sh3 billion. Patrick Osero, the Agricultural Finance Corporation Chairman has been accused of land grabbing involving major land scams including the famous Langata Road Primary school. Former Kenya National Examination Council Chief Executive Offic er Paul Wasanga has been accused of bribery
during the procurement of examination materials. The National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation (NWCPC) acting CEO is under investigation for impropriety regarding the implementation of Sh10 billion West Pokot dam (Sinohydro). “Other allegations are that the structural cabling of the headquarter building was not properly done,” reads the report. Two Directors of procurement and the Managing Director of the Kenya Airports Authority are being investigated for flouting procurement processes with regard to tendering. Many other corporations were found to have been in breach of the procurement procedures including, KENTRADE, Garissa water, Kenya Pipeline Corporation, Tourism Fund/ Catering Levy Trustee and Kenya Urban Roads Authority among others. During a briefing by Statehouse Spokesman Manoah Esipisu, he stated that President Uhuru Kenyatta had directed the various boards of the parastatals whose staff had been mentioned to appoint individuals who would sit in for the period of the investigations.
Tobiko appeals for security of prosecutors The Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko has called on governments to look into the security of prosecutors, judicial officers and investigators handling emerging and transnational organised crimes. Tobiko who was reacting to the killing of Uganda’s Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Ms Joan Kagezi by suspected Al-Shabaab militants, said the security of law enforcers can no longer be taken for granted in light of the upsurge in organised crimes that the officers have to deal with on a daily basis. He said the attack has the potential of emboldening other organised criminal gangs on slowing down prosecutions which could paralyse the criminal justice system. Tobiko said it is time decisive action is taken to ensure adequate protection is accorded to prosecutors, investigators and judicial officers. He termed the incident as one that has made the week a dark one for the administrators of justice in Uganda, the East African region and the world at large. Ms Kagezi, 48 was shot dead by two unknown assailants who were trailing her on a boda boda in Kiwatule, Kampala on Monday night.

CARTOONSPEAK Kenya is home to hordes of unapologetic drunks and alcoholics
NEWS BRIEFS 6 suspects gunned down in separate robbery missions Six suspects were last night gunned down in separate incidences of crime within Nairobi. In the first incident, five suspects including a woman were shot dead at Clayworks area along Thika Superhighway and an AK47 rifle, a pistol and bullet proof vest recovered from them. The suspects are said to have been heading to Muranga Town in a matatu where they were to commit a robbery. Police however intercepted them following a tip off. The officers say they recovered 14 bullets from the victims. They had apparently picked the weapons from the city for use in their mission. Elsewhere, another suspect was shot dead in a botched robbery incident in Kariobangi. The suspect was in the company of three others and had been attacking and robbing residents when an alarm was raised. This attracted the attention of patrol police who responded and killed the one of the thugs. In the process, a pedestrian was shot and seriously wounded in the leg. The victim was rushed to hospital and treated and discharged.
Lobby alarmed by increasing death sentences Human rights group Amnesty International has said there was an “alarming” increase in death sentences around the world in 2014. In its annual review of death penalty use across the planet, it said some countries were using it in response to “real or perceived” security threats. More than 500 more death sentences were issued than in 2013. Kenya’s Attorney general Githu Muigai (pictured above) has already announced plans to have the penalty removed in the country. Since the year began, at least three people have been sentenced to death in Kenya.
Kenya is currently facing one of its greatest threats from alcohol abuse. From drunk driving to intoxicated pedestrians courting calamity by crossing busy roads, the state of affairs seems to have gotten worse. Even warnings from the medical community have not stopped Kenyans from engaging in what may be their favourite pastime. Despite the threat of dementia, seizures, liver disease and early death, alcohol drinkers are still drowning these fears in a bottle. Not even confirmed reports by the Ministry of Health and government agencies such as the National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) that illicit brewers have been turning to lethal embalming fluid used in mortuaries have cut the rate of abuse. Euromonitor International, a market research firm, revealed that Kenyans are drinking as much as 26 million litres of alcohol a year, a n increase of more than 4 per cent since 2011. A previous national survey by NACADA shows that alcohol is now the most abused substance in the country.
Trial of soldiers threatens Kenya-UK military contract The government’s insistence that British soldiers who are found guilty of committing crimes on the Kenyan soil be tried locally is at the center of a deadlock between the two countries and is now threatening to worsen relations between Nairobi and London. Kenya has already threatened to pull out of a military co-operation deal that is expected to be renewed between the two countries in three weeks if the UK government will not adhere to its new demands. According to UK’s Daily Mail President Uhuru Kenyatta has now made the ultimatum to Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond during tense diplomatic negotiations over a long-standing deal which has allowed up to 10,000 British troops a year to carry out exercises in Kenya’s harsh terrain before deploying to active operations in theatres such as Afghanistan and Iraq. But presidential adviser Manoah Esipisu said the country’s new constitution required that British soldiers accused of offences in Kenya must be prosecuted under Kenyan law, the UK mail reported. “These are tough negotiations and there will be no backing down by Kenya on this issue,” he said. “Kenya is not the same country as when these agreements
were signed.” The current deal is worth an estimated £58million (about Sh8 billion) a year to the Kenyan economy, and also involves British troops training the Kenyan Armed Forces in reciprocation. “We shall continue with the negotiations and maintain the good relationship. We are going to engage them in good faith,” Defence Cabinet Secretary Rachel Omamo said last week while speaking at the Humanitarian Peace Support School at Embakasi Garrison in Nairobi. But that could come to an end if deep-rooted differences are not solved. Kenyan security expert Professor Trevor Ng’ulia said relations between the two countries were so bad that it was a matter of ‘who blinks first’ in the current face-off before the deadline of April 21. He said relations had soured since 2013 when British High Commissioner Christian Turner warned in the run-up to Kenyan elections that the UK would not be prepared to meet Mr Kenyatta if he was elected, ‘except for essential business’ as he had been indicted by the International Criminal Court and was due to stand trial for his alleged involvement in post-election violence and killings in 2007. The charges have since been withdrawn and trial terminated.

AFFORDABLE: Demand for solar power has been on the rise since the energy is considered effective and affordable.
Anya Energy pledges Sh86,000 annual savings in electricity bills As demand for electricity far exceeds supply, the market for diesel generators is quickly growing. The equipment are normally expensive and cumbersome as they demand refuelling on regular basis. In some cases, the systems cost households up to Sh86,000 a year in power bills. Now solar power company, Anya Energy has vowed to reverse the cost trend. “Energy issues have taken centre-stage in this era of climate change and the modern home is in no way left out,” says a statement from Anya Energy.
Anya says poor rainfall causes over-reliance on expensive diesel generators that are paid for through the “fuel cost adjustment in your electricity bill.” The trend has sparked demand for solar power which is viewed as an effective and affordable solution to the problem. Regular blackouts, power shortage and lack of access to the national grid has driven Kenyans to rely on solar power solutions, prompting companies like Anya Energy to take shape. Incorporated in 2012, the company set up a manufacturing plant for heaters.

Legendary rapper Shawn Carter (pictured below), also known as Jay Z, has officially launched a newly acquired music streaming site Tidal. Jay Z acquired Aspiro, the media technology company behind Tidal, in March for Sh5.2 trillion. At first, a group of minority shareholders who control 10 per cent of Aspiro, were preparing to reject the takeover bid but later decided to accept Jay Z’s bid. The streaming site is co-owned by fellow musicians, including his superstar wife Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Jack White, J Cole, Daft Punk, Madonna, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna,
Deadmau5, Calvin Harris, Chris Martin, Jason Aldean, Usher and Arcade Fire. It is the world’s first streaming platform that is owned by musicians. The co-owners signed a declaration that details their aim for the streaming service. A spokesperson for the website said they will also stream full offline play in addition to offering streaming of lossless, high-resolution music and curated playlists. Tidal said it was introducing a lower-cost tier; the premium tier that was updated to cost $9.99 (Sh923) per month, but the Hi-fi service is still $19.99 (Sh1846).
Anya Energy has since developed a broad range of solar systems and aspires to assume a dominant position in the growing solar power market across the globe. The firm has developed a number of products to help consumers reduce over-reliance on expensive systems. Their Flat Plate solar water heater, for instance, is one of the company’s many innovations “More than 50 to 80 per cent of your electrical bill is accounted for by water heating elements,” says the firm.

CREDIT POINTER Co-operative Bank Personal Loan
MALTED HOPES: Keroche Breweries has officially opened its new Sh5.5 billion plant that with which it hopes to grow its market share to 20 percent from the current three percent.
Despite many people having a regular source of income, a lot of Kenyans are unable to buy the things they want without a great deal off effort. The Co-operative Bank of Kenya has come out in support of this individuals in the form of a personal loan. Borrowers can get up to Sh4 million, depending on their financial status. The lender says that their product is “designed to help you purchase those things that you have always desired but always seem out of reach.”
This service is particularly so for salaried individuals who have held accounts with the Bank for more than 6 months. These accounts, says the bank, should be the ones through which their salaries are processed. The service comes with a a minimum loan amount of Sh50,000 and a maximum of Sh4 million repayable in up to 60 months. The bank proudly states that their Co-op Personal Loan covers “virtually all the purchase needs of salaried individuals.”
Keroche uncorks new Sh5.5bn production line Keroche Breweries has officially opened its new Sh5.5 billion plant that with which it hopes to grow its market share to 20 percent from the current three percent. The new one million hectoliter brew house has the capacity of 600,000 beer bottles per day and it can produce 30 different brands. “The facility being commissioned today will guarantee that the promise to grow and be present everywhere in Kenya and beyond can now be effectively responded to; it will guarantee consistency,” said Keroche Breweries Chief Executive Tabitha Karanja. She said the brew house will guarantee that
the brand Summit can compete here at home regionally and globally. The brewer has been facing supply strain as volumes failed to meet customer demand with its flagship beers Summit Lager and Summit Malt having on occasion reported stock-outs in some parts of the country. “In terms of technology, it’s the best in Kenya and in Africa it’s second to none, “she added. The facility based in Naivasha will create 100 more skilled jobs at the factory and thousands more in the distribution chain. The brewer whose portfolio also includes wines and vodkas is currently recruiting sales
SMART MOVE
Water project to save farmers and businesses up to Sh2bn
WATER AND LIFE: A picture of Thiba Headworks, Mwea Irrigation Scheme. TNC has launched a first-of-its-kind water initiative that supports farmers and those living on the upper side of water sources.
HUSTLER’S SECTOR Hawkers selling designer sports shoes can make between Sh2,000 and Sh10,000 in a single day. While their income is often irregular, an X News spot check has revealed that some merchants rake in thousands of shillings selling shoes, particularly, those associated with famous brands. These hawkers can sometimes go an entire day with no customers only to sell a single pair of shoes. However, on a good day, a retailer can sell 10 to 15 pairs, given the right conditions. Kenya’s growing middle class has given
managers as well as brand managers, new distributors to position it countrywide and beyond. The factory which it started constructing in 2012 will see its annual capacity grow from 10 million litres to 100 million litres and will also enable the brewer to produce new brands. “Our apology to you is we have taken too long to fulfill this promise, but we are grateful for your patience we had to crawl before we walk, we had to walk before we could run, and you have been our witnesses to these gradual steps, “Karanja concluded.
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and partners, including the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) have launched a first-of-itskind water initiative that supports farmers and those living on the upper side of water sources. The project was birthed due to increasing frustration over the menace of soil erosion to farmers and businesses relying on water sources for electricity generation. Jane Kabugi is one of the thousands of Kenyans set to benefit from the project. As a farmer in Tana region who lives on the upper side of River Tana, her house is threatened by deadly floods.
Aware of the catastrophic nature of such crises, TNC and CIAT launched a landmark initiative known as the Tana-Nairobi Water Fund. The Fund is a public-private scheme uniting big business, utilities, conservation groups, the government, researchers as well as farmers. It aims to increase farm productivity upstream, while improving water supply and cutting costs of hydropower and clean water for users downstream, and is designed to generate up to Sh2 billion in longterm benefits to Kenyan citizens, including farmers and businesses. If successful, it could pave the way for
similar projects across the continent. Under the initiative, downstream users, such as Coca-Cola, East African Breweries, and utility companies, will pay upstream “guardians” to implement strategic measures to protect the upper watershed. These include tree planting along river banks, terracing on very steep slopes, soil conservation schemes and drip irrigation within the catchment areas expected to significantly curb soil erosion and cut soil sediment concentrations in half, depending on the location in the catchment and time of year.
Knock-off shoes give hawkers up to Sh10,000 a day
rise to a new breed of urban youth who strive to compete in a world of everchanging fashion. In fact, research group, Youth Dynamix released a report a few months ago, indicating that Kenyan youth spend an estimated Sh64 billion a year on clothes alone. Hawkers have been quick to cash in on this growing market by providing what many shopping malls, urban stalls and shoe stores are unable to stock. By only stocking shoes with seemingly big brand names and multi-coloured knock-offs, hawkers have been able to
appeal to a large market of young people who tend to have similar tastes when it comes to fashion. From high-tops to footwear that resembles the famous ‘Air Jordan’ brand, these retailers have found their niche market. Scattered across urban areas, along the streets of the CBD and in open air markets, hawkers are known to display their wares. A single pair of brightly-coloured shoes can cost as much as Sh8,000 in any of Nairobi’s malls and a cheaper but convincing knock off can go for Sh2,000 on the street.

The biggest issue surrounding Churchill’s brand lies in the talent he’s known for discovering. One by one, the most popular names to have come out of his machine fly out of the coop in search of other opportunities.

C
hurchill, real name Daniel Ndambuki, is a household name. No other comedian in recent times has attained the level of success in Kenya as he has. From the skinny Churchill Abednego that would make notable appearances on premier comedy show Redykyulass, to the hearty comedian signing million dollar deals that we see today, his road has been long and eventful.
hbabaud aud
Churchill had somehow managed to replicate a template used in the Western world for comedy shows and it ended up being such a success that it felt like he struck gold. People would and still do watch his show with a feverish diligence every weekend, waiting to see his newest stunt. Not being greedy, he has over the years given budding comedians a chance under the spotlight—by all standards a honorable endeavor. Churchill, through his show and affiliates Hearstrings Kenya and Laugh Industry have brought forth names such as Teacher Wanjiku, Chipukeezy and David the Student to the forefront of the Kenyan entertainment scene. But staying in the public eye requires relevance and as time has proved, relevance is too volatile. Maybe it was this reason that drove Churchill into inviting a known conman, reprobate and all round social pariah, Pastor Victor Kanyari to his show—a family show. Even with all the hullabaloo that has been courting Churchill’s name in the past few years this was definitely a bold and, maybe, careless move. The man with the highest Facebook following in Kenya brought a ‘pervert’ to his show. Kenyans naturally took their anger to social media, giving Churchill received quite a bit of spanking. One very scathing comment left
on social media site Twitter, came from Mbita MP Millie Odhiambo, who expressed how disappointed she was in the comedian. Odhiambo’s sentiments were linked to Churchill’s uninformed comment on a rape scandal involving an MP, which generally indicated that the victim was to blame for it. Churchill’s massive following on social media at times seems to do more harm than good to his name. Many a time, keen followers call him out on repeating jokes that have been used before or stealing jokes that are floating around on the internet. And it doesn’t stop at fading originality. In February this year, a video titled ‘The Other Side of Churchill’ was posted online but it turned out to be a clever way to lure people into watching an ad for Property Realty Company. Churchill again received admonishing for lending his name to clickbait. But the biggest challenge surrounding his brand lies in the talent he’s known for discovering. One by one the most popular names to have come out of his machine keep flying the out of coop in search of better opportunities. Eric Omondi, who is arguably the most infamous product of the Churchill Show, has been on his stage for two rounds and each time he left under unclear
circumstances. The first time he left was to start his own show,‘Hawayu’, which turned out to be a colossal failure. The second time there was talk of restrictions that were barring him from fully expressing himself on the set. But, Eric, diplomatically maintains that he left to give up and coming comedians a chance to take centre stage. Teacher Wanjiku, who was flying high on the Churchill show left at the height of her popularity to pursue ‘other projects.’ But rumor was rife that she had fallen out with Churchill over an Airtel endorsement. Another hot issue is the question of payments comedians receive on the show. It had been stated that some comedians are supposedly paid as low as Sh1000 for appearances on the Churchill Show and its Churchill Raw spinoff. This came off as an insult to the public because it appeared like Churchill was making millions off his business while other comedians were being ripped off. But those in his inner circle, Owago Onyiro and the like, have nothing but accolades to bestow upon him. And with everything that surrounds his persona, even the controversies, Daniel ‘Churchill’ Ndambuki stays on top off his game. That is if the Sh72million event insurance deal he recently signed is anything to go by.

ost times when a room needs an upgrade people turn to professional painters to get the job done. This is not necessarily a bad thing but hiring a professional painter might be a pricy endeavour especially if it is something we can do ourselves. Preparing the room for the messiness that usually goes along with painting should be the first thing that is taken care of. All furniture should be moved out of the room if possible and those pieces that are heavy to move should be covered up. An old bed sheet would be ideal for this. The floor should also be covered up to avoid spills and stains. Electrical outlets should be kept protected with plastic seals and lighting fixtures should be removed from the room. Priming ensures the walls are ready for the paint and that the result will be more even. Repair any damage to the walls such as chips and cracks
ave you ever thought of making your own candles? You can be forgiven for thinking that it is a major hustle when actually it is a simple process. Making your own candles saves you cash but earns you fun. Firstly, get wax and melt it and then put it into your preferred container, either a cup, a glass or even an egg shell. Next assemble wicks, cut lengths of the waxed rope for the candle. For ease of making the candle, cut a few inches longer than needed so you can trim the wicks to length at a later point. Secure one end of the wick rope into the wick tab base, and use needle nose pliers to pinch the metal tight. When the wax has melted

WORKOUT
Burn that I
t is a rampant disease. With the emerging lifestyles in the urban jungle, more and more people are developing belly fat. This can be quite embarrassing, and can play a major role in your performance at work physically and mentally. Fat is in fact essential for the body to function. You need some forms of fat (such as visceral fat) to provide cushioning around your organs. However, when this fat becomes excessive, the body begins to store the surplus around the belly, resulting in the abnormal expansion of the stomach, otherwise known as a pot belly. Because many of us dread the
bELLY fat Ectomorph
hustle of going to the gym, it is best to try and contain the cause of belly fat, which is primarily our diet and lifestyle. Excess fat is a result of poor diet and eating habits. To curb this menace it is essential to consume foods that keep your stomach flat and help control impulse eating. Here are five foods that can help fight belly fat Egg whites Rather than fried eggs, opt for boiled ones as the egg whites are lower in calories and are rich in protein, with the additional advantage of having lower cholesterol- the major source of body fat.
9
Cereals Oatmeal, cornmeal and other forms of cereal are an ideal diet for someone aiming to cut down on belly fat. These foods are relatively low in calories and are at the same time satisfying. Nuts The heart-healthy fatty acids in nuts boost satiety hormones that make you feel full. The same fatty acids also keep belly fat at bay. The longer your belly feels saturated, the less the chances are of random snacking on meals. Hot Pepper Consuming hot peppers in just one single spicy meal or 30 minutes before a meal can boost
your metabolism by up to 25 per cent, with the spike in calorie burning lasting for up to three hours after you finish eating, along with feeling less hungry. Yoghurt Yoghurt contains probiotics, which boost the beneficial bacteria in the digestive system. However, try to skip the flavored versions as they tend to have a lot of sugar. Instead, go for plain, protein-rich yogurt, which you can hype up with fresh fruit. Sticking to this diet will ensure minimum fat in the body, as well as maintaining that tyre-free physique.

Enhance security for pedestrians using footbridges, tunnels at night I commend traffic police and NTSA officers in Nairobi for working to enhance road safety rules as confirmed by their arrest of pedestrians who do not cross roads using designated facilities. I remind them of some common realities on the ground. Some of the facilities which have
cost tax payers a fortune to install pose grave security risk to users depending on time. Think of how safe a single pedestrian feels crossing long city flyovers from 7.00 pm onwards! Tunnels are even worse since they are darker, more isolated and filled with strong ammonia fumes as a result of
people relieving themselves there. I urge the Government to consider improving security for pedestrians using footbridges by installing more neon lights. It should install hidden CCTV cameras at the utilities. —Alfred MosotiBaraton University

The rest of the East African region will be represented by Uganda’s Deo Akope and Rwanda top professional Jean-Baptiste Hakizimana. This year’s Open will feature players from 19 countries. Participating professional golfers will be drawn from as far as Chile, Argentina with the largest chunk from Europe. The Challenge Tour takes the largest chunk of 106 as organisers of Kenya Open KOGL distribute 50 slots to local and international golfers on merit. “We have an obligation to add value to the tournament. Nyamweya on EACC graft list
Football Kenya Federation president Sam Nyamweya is among those named in the confidential dossier prepared by Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission submitted to Parliament by President Uhuru Kenyatta. Nyamweya is alleged to have stolen federation funds but the report indicates the matter is still under investigation. In response to the matter, Nyamweya dismissed the EACC probe on the federation, claiming it is misleading to claim the federation is under investigations as FKF is not a State agency. “It is common knowledge that FKF is not a State agency and its officials are thus not State officers as per the law. It is in the public domain that allegations of impropriety were made to EACC by suspended officials. “However, before conclusion of the probe, the complainants withdrew and apologised claiming to have been misled to files the charges. It’s therefore misleading for EACC to purport to be investigating the management of football affairs or its leadership,” Nyamweya said in a statement on Tuesday. The Head of State submitted the dossier to Parliament on Thursday after delivering his State of the Nation address. He called on those mentioned to leave office for 60 days to facilitate investigations.

Murray beats Kevin Anderson to reach 500 career wins Andy Murray became the first Briton to reach the landmark of 500 career wins after defeating Kevin Anderson to earn his place in the Miami Open last eight. The third seed required all three sets to despatch South Africa’s Anderson, seeded 15, winning 6-4 3-6 6-3. Murray becomes the 46th man to reach 500 wins since the open era began. Of those, only nine are still playing. The Scot, 27, has reached the landmark in just under 10 years, having made his professional debut in April 2005. Murray said it was “fitting” to record his 500th career win in Miami, where he spends a lot of time training. “I’ve been through quite a lot of pain
on that court in the last few years,” he said. “I hope I can use this as motivation to win some more and I hope today’s match wasn’t the last one. “There’s different ways of judging the success of someone’s career, but winning 800-900 matches is something that’s happened very rarely and a difficult thing to do - so it gives you something to aim at.” Murray set a new record for open-era wins by a British man earlier in March, beating Feliciano Lopez at Indian Wells to surpass Tim Henman’s 496-victory mark. In Miami he was aggressive from the outset, breaking Anderson’s serve in the
first game of the match and attacking even the most challenging of shots to sustain his advantage throughout the first set. Anderson, 28, was slow to start but recovered well to twice break serve and open a 4-0 lead on the way to the second set, as Murray appeared to be fading. But the Scot broke serve again early in the deciding set and with the landmark in sight, rediscovered his best to claim victory and a place in the quarter-finals of a tournament he has won twice before, in 2009 and 2013. He will now face Austria’s world number 36 Dominic Thiem, 21, later today.

Kenya beat Tanzania to book slot in 2015 ICC World Twenty20 qualifiers Kenya’s cricket team secured their place in the 2015 ICC World Twenty20 qualifiers with an eight-wicket win over Tanzania at the Sahara Willmore Park in Gauteng South Africa. The win boosted Kenya’s net run rate to +2.427 and top the log with eight points before facing Namibia in their last match. Namibia who lost to Uganda in an exciting game, are second with 6 points and a run rate of +2.354. Uganda are now third on six points with a net run rate of +0.845. Kenya play Namibia in their final fixture with Namibia needing to win to be assured of qualification. With a match in hand, Kenya have the destiny in their own hands. They could miss qualifying if they play poorly and Uganda win their final fixture against Ghana with a big run rate. Kenya last played Namibia in the ICC World Cricket League
Division Two championships in Namibia in January where Namibia beat Kenya. During their last competitive T20 encounter in November 2013, Kenya won the match by seven wickets. For a long time, Namibia have been a stumbling block for Kenya and Steve Tikolo, the Kenya coach will be wary of this challenge. Tikolo will be hopeful that his players especially the batsmen post good scores against a strong side. The batsmen have failed to turn their good start to big scores leaving Kenya vulnerable in almost all the matches. Speaking after the match against Tanzania, Rakep Patel, the captain said he was hopeful of a good show against a strong Namibia side. “It’s been easy for us so far, but there is nothing we can do about the lack of challenge rather than to stay focused on the upcoming match against Namibia.”
Kenya Pipeline continued their fine run of form at the ongoing with a dominant straight sets victory over defending champion’s GS Petroliers of Algeria at October Hall in Cairo, Egypt on Tuesday. Pipeline are the only Kenyan team remaining after Kenya Commercial Bank,KACB were knocked out of the last eight after losing all their pool matches. The seven time African champions rounded off the first set 2515 before posting identical set victories of 25-21 to book their semi-final ticket. Carthage of Tunisia beat RRA Rwanda 3-0 in quarterfinal of women’s to sail through to the last four dominated by North African clubs. Hosts Shams of Egypt were set to play debutants Vision of Uganda while six time African Champions Ahly of Egypt face Cameroonian FAP. Meanwhile, Geoffrey Omondi is
the new Kenya men’s volleyball team. The Co-operative Bank of Kenya coach takes over from Gideon Chenje who has been at the helm of the team for close to four years. David Lungaho as the women head coach. These were some of the changes announced by Martin Makokha, the Kenya Volleyball Federation vice chairman. He stated: “We believe Omondi understands what it means to be a national team coach and what it will take to move our game to the next level.” Among some of the attributes of the new coach is his vision, dedication and passion which KVF could not overlook. He is acknowledged as having groomed many players and is one of the best coaches in the country. “I have great confidence that he will begin putting his own fingerprints on the squad,” Makokha added.

The 23-year-old, who started just two Premier League games for Tottenham before January, came off the bench to cancel out Graziano Pelle’s opener. “I have just been desperate to get on the pitch and silence a few critics,” he said. “Hopefully they can realise the quality I bring to the team.” Townsend scored on his international debut against Montenegro to help England qualify for the World Cup, but missed the finals in Brazil with an ankle injury. Former Arsenal forward Paul
Merson had questioned Townsend’s place in the team earlier in the week. Townsend said “Not bad for a player that should be ‘nowhere near the squad’ ay @PaulMerse?” He added: “I have been thinking about it all week. As soon as the goal went in, I was thinking of all the people questioning my call-ups and saying I should be nowhere near the England squad.” England boss Roy Hodgson praised the 70th-minute substitute who came on for Fabian Delph. “We’ve always appreciated that quality he has. In a squad of 20-odd players, there should be a place for guys like him because he’s a game changer.”
with 25 points after winning the season-opening Kisumu Rally. He is expected to inject a touch of class albeit stiff challenge from defending champion Chager, Duncan, Rajbir and four-time champion Carl Tundo. Chager has two Safari titles under his belt. The figure is three shy of those collected by legendary Shekhar Mehta. But clinching a third will not be too much to ask given his alluring form in recent past. Another driver to watch will be
Duncan who will unveil a new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 10. A protracted battle looms in other categories including 2WD, S Class, SPV, Division 1, 2 and 3. There is a blood rivalry among Frank Tundo and his children Carl and Tash. The elder Tundo has seen rally technology morph through different guises and is tipped to give the ‘Young Turks’ a run for their money. Meanwhile, 62 year-old Azar Anwar

Fellaini strikes out Wales from Euro 2016 top spot Belgium knocked Wales off top spot in their Euro 2016 qualifying group as Marouane Fellaini’s early goal gave them a narrow win over Israel. The Manchester United midfielder scored from close range as Belgium went above Wales on goal difference in Group B. Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany was sent off for a second booking on
64 minutes by English referee Mark Clattenburg. Israel are two points behind Wales with the top two qualifying for France 2016. Defender Kompany will be suspended for Belgium’s next match away to Wales in June where both sides will look to preserve their unbeaten records.
is upbeat of his Safari chances in an ageing Evo8 car previously used by Alastair Cavanegh. Azar says the Safari recce was tough with weather and road conditions being unpredictable. “Still trying to get help where services trucks cannot reach. Remembering old times when service crews had to rush all over the country day and night leapfrogging ahead of cars to give service support,” said Azar.
BANG! Davy Klaassen wheels of in celebration after scoring the second goal as Netherlands enjoyed a comfortable win over struggling Spain.
Netherlands scored twice in the first 16 minutes to ease to a 2-0 friendly victory over Spain in Amsterdam. The two sides met in the group stages in the 2014 World Cup, when Netherlands thrashed their opponents 5-1. They also faced one another in the 2010 World Cup final, when Andres Iniesta scored Spain’s winner. But Guus Hiddink’s men were on top on Tuesday and cruised ahead through Stefan de Vrij’s header before Davy Klaassen struck a second past goalkeeper David de Gea. The game at the World Cup in Brazil last year brought to an end Spain’s dominant run in major tournaments. Spain won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships as well as the 2010 World Cup. Spain coach Vicente del Bosque fielded an experimental side on Tuesday, with Malaga forward Juanmi and Sevilla midfielder Vitolo making international debuts. But even with experienced players such as Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas and Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla in the midfield, they were unable to prevent hosts from running away with the match in the opening stages. The loss condemned Spain to a third consecutive friendly loss for the first time since 2001. Netherlands defender Bruno Martins Indi should have made it 3-0 but missed a free header in the second half.
