Teachers’ strike paralyses schools
R
esumption of learning in public schools was thrown into disarray today after teachers made good their threat of keeping away from classes to force the Government give in to their pay demands. Majority of public schools across the country were deserted as parents appeared to have heeded warnings by the giant teachers’ union, Knut, not to send children to school. At Nairobi’s St Georges Primary School, only three
teachers, including head teacher Grace Situma, had reported to work when X News team visited the institution at about 9.30am.Situma called for dialogue between teachers and the Government. “We have to wait for talks between Knut and the Government to materialise so that learning can resume. As we all know coverage of the syllabus will be affected and our wish is for the players to come to an agreement soon,” she said. Earlier today, Knut Secretary General Wilson
Sossion was quoted saying: “We have withdrawn labour. There is no use sending children to school. Strike is the only legitimate weapon left with us.” “Let the strike begin. It is the only language Government understands when it comes to the plight of teachers,” Sossion tweeted at midnight. The union had yesterday insisted on the strike for which they blamed Government failure to heed to their demands.

Another City building crash kills 2
DEATH TRAP: Rescuers rummage through the rubble of a seven-storey building that collapsed in Nairobi’s Huruma estate on Sunday night. Two people had been confirmed dead by the time of going to press.
Orengo son admitted to Aga Khan hospital Bob James Orengo, son to Siaya Senator James Orengo, was this morning admitted at the Aga Khan Hopital in Nairobi. Details of the illness had not been released by the time of going to press, but sources indicated that he had started vomiting after a night out with friends. Philip Etale, ODM’s Communication Director tweeted: “Just spoken with Sen Orengo & he has confirmed his son was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital after developing complications but stabilising.” The news comes barely a day after the death of opposition leader Raila Odinga’s eldest son, Fidel, in unclear circumstances. Fidel will be buried on Saturday, January 10, 2015.
At least two people have died and 40 others rescued after a sevenstorey residential house collapsed in Huruma, Nairobi, yesterday evening. One of the victims, a woman, died on arrival at the Kenyatta National Hospital while an infant’s body was retrieved from the rubble. By this morning, rescuers said they had recorded 40 casualties, 26 of whom were admitted to the Kenyatta National Hospital. “Twelve were treated on site and discharged while two fatalities so far recorded include a lady and an infant,” Levi Mwambise, an official from the Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre told journalists this morning. Many more victims are still thought to be trapped in the rubble. The Red Cross said they had only recorded three cases of missing persons. “Five people had been reported missing but two of them were positively identified from those rescued,” a Red Cross official said. The team of rescuers comprising Kenya Defence Forces, National Youth Service, Nairobi City County and Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre officials said they feared many people may still be trapped since they could hear screams last night. The building collapsed on Sunday at about 8 pm before a search and rescue operation was launched. Governor Evans Kidero said more machinery would be used in the operation. Six floors of the structure were occupied while the seventh was still under construction. The incident occurred barely a month after another residential flat collapsed at Nairobi’s Kaloleni Estate and killed at least seven occupants.
DULL DAY: St Georges Primary School in Nairobi registered little activity on opening day of term one after parents opted not to release the children following a strike by teachers.
Schools paralysed as teachers strike starts From Page 1
“Teachers are directed to engage in the strike action with effect from midnight and should keep away from their work places,” Knut said in a statement signed by Sossion and chairman Mudzo Nzili. It had warned that teachers will be absent from all learning institutions.
Knut said the teachers’ agitation is bound to escalate until the Government takes steps to settle the problem. The union leaders, however, said they are willingness to engage in dialogue. “The union’s hands are open to fruitful negotiations. Negotiations in good faith. Negotiations without restrain and mischief,” the
statement said. Among the demands teachers have put forward include an increase in basic salaries by between 200 per cent and 300 per cent and a responsibility allowance for head teachers, deputies and departmental heads.

CARTOONSPEAK US is greatest threat to world peace In a list of countries believed to pose the greatest danger to world peace, the United States is at the very top. Despite the tendency of the media to paint the North American continent as a noble hero, the US has actually turned into something of a monster that other countries are afraid of. According to a global poll from WIN and Gallup International conducted in 65 countries and released Monday, almost everyone believes the country is the greatest threat to world peace. The survey states that 24 per cent of respondents see the US as the greatest
threat, followed by Pakistan where 8 per cent say the South Asian country is the greatest threat to world peace. China takes the third place as the biggest menace to world peace, and Israel ranks fourth, together with Iran, North Korea and Afghanistan. Further down the list are India, Iraq and Japan. Only 3 per cent of the respondents believe Syria is dangerous to the world, and only 2 per cent are fearful of Russia. Only 1 per cent of respondents see Palestinians as the greatest danger to world peace, alongside Britain, Germany, Australia, South Korea, Somalia and Saudi Arabia.

16 YEARS LATER: Abu Anas al Libi (above), who is an alleged al Qaeda operative, has been in the US since he was captured by Special Forces in Libya in 2013.
A man accused of involvement in the 1998 Nairobi bombing of the US Embassy has died in hospital, his family has said. Abu Anas al Libi, who is an alleged al Qaeda operative, has been in the US since he was captured by Special Forces in Libya in 2013. Abdel Mouin told CNN by phone from Tripoli the family was notified by his lawyer in US that al Libi, whose real name was Nazih al-Ruqaii, died in a hospital Friday evening. The 50-year-old native of Libya was accused of playing a role in the 1998 US Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. The two bombings killed 224 people, including 12 Americans, and injured hundreds more. A document filed in court Saturday by the Department of Justice said al Libi died after his already poor health suddenly deteriorated. On Wednesday, the letter filed with the judge presiding over the trial said, he “was taken from the Metropolitan Correctional Center to a New York hospital due to sudden complications arising out of his long-standing medical problems.”
Despite the care provided at the hospital, it said, his condition deteriorated rapidly and he passed away Friday evening. “We understand that, in addition to his counsel, an Imam was with (al Libi) at the hospital and that appropriate arrangements are being made with his family,” the letter said. Mouin told CNN his father’s health had deteriorated since US Army Delta Force soldiers snatched him from outside his family home in Tripoli in October 2013. Mouin said his father, who suffered from advanced hepatitis C, had been in a hospital in a coma before his death. He said his father had also developed liver cancer since his capture. The family holds the US government “fully responsible” for what happened to the man they call al-Ruqaii, Mouin said. Al Libi was indicted in 2001 by the federal court in the Southern District of New York on charges of conspiracy to kill US nationals, murder, destruction of buildings and government property and destruction of national defense utilities of US.

Farmers make Sh500,000 from tomatoes, capsicum A number of young farmers can think of 500,000 reasons to raise tomatoes and capsicum. They are earning as much as Sh500,000 every harvest by growing the two crops which have become the latest high valued crops due to their fast maturity and growing demand. Capsicum and tomatoes take about three months to grow once they are planted. Their short maturity period is especially attractive to young farmers, who have neither the time nor the patience for slow-growing
crops that take almost an entire year to mature. These farmers cannot wait for crops like maize to mature since they take a total of about seven months. And the fact that the two crops need small pieces of land to grow and have a ready market in urban areas has made them quite popular. Speaking about the two popular plants, Bernard Watitu, who grows the crops in a greenhouse in Juja, says: “Each plant produces about four capsicums or tomatoes
per harvest.” He harvests his crops twice a month and currently has 700 plants. Tomatoes, according to the ministry of agriculture, are the third most important vegetable in the country in terms of tonnage produced. Last year, Kenya’s total production stood at 494,036.5 tonnes valued at $158 million (Sh14.3 billion). In Nairobi, dozens of trucks deliver tonnes of the produce to vegetable markets every day, with each capsicum plant going for an
average of Sh15 with wholesale prices and Sh20 for retail prices. Similarly, tomatoes are all-season crops that have a huge market in Nairobi. Currently, a bunch of three tomatoes goes for between Sh15 and Sh20. Waititu sells his produce from the boot of his car to traders and residents of Buru Buru, a suburb on the east side of Nairobi. About 40km away from Juja, in Kitengela, Christine Wachu, another young farmer, grows capsicum and tomatoes on her parents’ land.

Kenyan start-ups can’t strike balance between business and living, survey Despite the fact that Kenya’s tech scene is one of Africa’s most advanced, lack of talent and problems in attaining seed capital seems to be dragging the sector down. To make matters worse, ideas that cannot be sold to a mass market or easily monetised have so far held back hundreds of Kenyan start-ups. Reuters reports that entrepreneurs say investment capital is scarce although the soaring use of phones and cheap data prices have been spurring growth. As many as 70 per cent of the start-ups in Kenya are not earning enough to maintain business and living expenses for a small team, states to a recent “Digital Entrepreneurship” survey by GSMA, a global association of mobile operators.
The survey contacted more than 230 start-ups across Kenya. “Many were drawn to the tech sector by the Kenyan government’s push for a digital future, plentiful Western donor funding and foreign media coverage about ‘Africa’s Silicon Savannah’,” says Reuters. “From co-founders of Facebook to the biggest tech funds you can find in Silicon Valley, they’ve all been here hunting and they have all gone home shaking their heads,” notes Nikolai Barnwell, a Nairobibased director of 88mph, a tech seed fund. His fund, which has seeded almost 20 companies in east Africa’s biggest economy, is taking a break from investing in Kenyan start-ups to focus on Nigeria where he believes the tech ecosystem is more profitfocused.

24-year-old Marley Sianto represented Kenya at the Miss Tourism World Competition. The tourism marketer with the Narok County Government was crowned Miss Tourism Africa, putting Kenya on the map again
MARLEY IS MISS TOURISM AFRICA Congratulations on your win. How was it for you to be recognized on the world stage as Africa’s finest? It is indeed an honor. I’m still coming to terms with it. When I was chosen to represent Kenya in Venezuela, meticulous preparation went into making sure I put my best presentation forward deserving of a competition of that stature. It is beyond belief to me but a noble honor that I will represent Africa on a global tourism platform. I sincerely thank God. How did you prepare for the finals? Preparation for the competition fundamentally included investing in myself. Which was my wardrobe, physical fitness, and mental preparedness. Tell us about your journey It was a 12-day endeavor that included an extensive tour of Venezuela that was a test of charm, character and beauty on the contestants. It included visits to children’s homes, homes for the elderly, photography in beautiful sandy beaches, exposure to unique Venezuelan cultures, practice on dance routines and order of presentation for the actual day. There was a pre-judging that was done as well where we were expected to market our countries in the best way possible. What will you do with the crown now that you are Africa’s face of Tourism? There are several agend that I want to be involved in. Because the tenure of office is short, I want to get involved in those that I can continue representing even beyond Dec 2015. I want to, of course, market Kenya and Africa as the ideal tourist destination. Conservation is one way of securing tourism for Africa. I am already engaging the relevant bodies so that I may get involved in Animal conservancy. In a nutshell, I am passionate about keeping the environment safe for our wildlife, it is a circle of life and as a Tourism
Ambassador I would love to advocate the best for tourism practices that will benefit wildlife, nature and communities not only in Kenya but around the world. What do you think about the beauty pageant industry in Kenya.? Beauty pageants in Kenya are growing at a reasonable rate. I am a success story of how far one can go engaging in a beauty pageant. The exposure alone is a priceless eye-opener. Other countries like Nigeria and South Africa, pageants are a big deal. The same was evident in Asia, South America and Europe. There are more than 400 different pageants in the world all expressing different agendas. Miss tourism Kenya for instance is a pageant that encompasses 6 pillars which include culture, investment, environment, Hospitality, tourism, peace and unity which build on to Kenya’s vision 2030 Where will Marley Sianto be in five years? A successful participant in the tourism industry and a mentor to the younger generation.

Lilian Muli behaving badly again It wasn’t me A war of words has continued to rage following the failed Macha New Year concert. Farooq and Swabrina’s magical union
F
arooq Jeylan bumped into Swabrina Abdullah six months ago and something about her convinced him she was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Three months into their courtship, Farooq was spiraling head over heels for Swabrina, and so was she. It is then that he popped the question while they were on a picnic at his hometown in Kericho. But because he is such a rib cracker,Swabrina did not take him seriously and thought it was one of his many jokes. “It brought her to tears. She was not sure if it was one of my crazy jokes or not until she saw me with her dad,” he told XAccess. As soon as she said yes, wedding plans kicked off in preparation for the three-day celebration budgeted at Sh500,000. Swabrina told us her side of the story with tenderness. “His great personality, humility, sense of humour and down to earth charm is what I want to have and keep for a lifetime,” she narrated. Because Swabrina’s favourite colour is green, the two lovebirds chose to incorporate lime green, cream and brown in their decor. The wedding venue, Sir Ali Muslim Club on Park Road, Nairobi, colourfully dazzled in green, cream and floral decorations. The bright ambience and lighting added to the sparkle. As it is the norm, the wedding started on Friday 2nd with
Nikkha. (Nikkha is where the girl’s father gives consent to the marriage and places her in the hands of the groom). It is followed by prayers and the union is officiated. The blessing ceremony was punctuated by their famous traditional practice of partaking in Kahawa Thunguu (dark sugar-free coffee) and Halwa (sugar snacks). The groom was dressed in a brown kanzu for the occasion. Then came Saturday where glam met splendor. Swabrina resembled a gorgeous African barbie in her strapless ball gown, silver bracelet and silver high heels with blinded crystals, all from Fatma Bridals, perfect make up and glitzy hairdo. She looked angelic and happy. Farooq was dressed in a grey suit, white shirt and a lime green tie and black laced Louis Vuitton shoes, all courtesy of Zara collections. The newlyweds were presented to the world. They sat down, ate, laughed and danced to great music with family and close friends. Celebrations rolled on to Sunday where they shared lunch with their loved ones and opened the gifts. Congratulations to the newlyweds, who are looking forward to an amazing honeymoon in Zanzibar and Dubai.

reviewing new year’s ConCerts.
Christians spoilt for choice to usher in 2015 This year was ushered with much pomp and pageantry with various events promising the ultimate 2014 send-off experience. Nairobi was a buzz of activities with clubs turning it up to attract revellers. As tradition would have it, the sky gave way to colourful firework display across the country to mark the end of an eventful 2014 and usher in a new year.
C
hristians all over the country thronged various churches to usher in the New Year in style. They were also spoilt for choice with the fun lovers choosing between the annual Totally Sold Out concert and Groove Party, which feature an array of top international and local gospel artistes. The Groove Party, held at the Safaricom International Stadium in Kasarani, showcased electrifying performances from local and international artistes as revellers partied to the best Christian music. Siyabonga Jesu hit singer, Pastor Solly Mahlangu, delivered a powerful performance and testimony, which left the crowd craving for more. The devil was in trouble after Size 8 entered the stage and pulled out her famous karate kicks as she belted out her Mateke hit. Willy Paul joined her later on to perform their Tam Tam hit collabo. Together with his dancers, Paul showcased his music and dance prowess in wellchoreographed and energetic dance moves leaving the ecstatic crowd glued to his every step. Back up dancers were trending
that night as Lingala ya Yesu hit maker, Piston also took the stage with his military clad dancers ready for war. They killed their performance with unbridled bursts of energy and precision. Other performers on the night included Tusker Project fame winner Ruth Matete, Bahati, Hopekid and Roughtone. On the other side of town, The Kenyatta International Conference Centre was hot with an assortment of celebrated artistes including Tanzania’s rose Muhando and Christina Shusho, Kanji, Gloria Muliro and Kambua among others. As usual, Muhando did not fail to impress with her strong vocals and highly charged up songs. After a pumped up performance, Muhando bowed out to give way to mellow voiced Christina Shusho who slowed the tempo and allowed the Holy Spirit to roam and touch the crowd. Our very own Gloria Muliro and Kambua did not let us down
either, they matched up to their Tanzanian counterparts and left the crowd jumping and singing to praise and worship songs. As the clock struck midnight, the Nairobi skyline was lit up with a vast display of colours from fireworks to mark an end to 2014 and hopeful 2015.
Mshikaki Festival rocks the Coast
T
he Flamingo Beach Resort in Mombasa was on fire with performances from Kenya’s dancehall king Redsan, who was flanked by Tanzania’s Ali Kiba and AY. Redsan, donned in his trademark (and somewhat old-fashioned) durag, led the crowd in busting the
latest dancehall moves. The ragga heartthrob went back to the old days with his singles Apakatwe and Touch, before cupping his impressive performance with Badder than most. The ladies went wild when Ali Kiba hit the stage with his Nakshi Mrembo hit.
His dancers backed him up with their rhythmic moves to the smooth Bongo music. The event was attended by Mombasa County Governor Hassan Joho and Senator Hassan Omar. Also in attendance was top comedian Eric Omondi.
Hakuna Matata Festival dazzles The Hakuna Matata Festival, held at the Manera Farm in Naivasha, lived up to its promise. From dazzling stage lights, which illuminated the crowds’ ecstatic jumping, clapping and vigorous gyrating, to music rising from massive booming speakers, to the all-white tents donning the Heineken brand and flickering Christmas lights, revellers were well sorted. A white light shot up from the ground to the sky shone like a beacon to let everyone know where the dancefloor was. Booze was selling at throw away prices, with a six pack of Heineken going for just Sh1,000. Mejja and Madtraxx spat their club bangers while Deejays Crème de le crème, John and Protégé kept the crowd on their feet with insane mixes. A brilliant solo performance from local maestro Scott the Violinist
gave the festival a touch of class. Self-proclaimed hype man, DNG, who was the MC of the event, let the crowd down after he started the countdown to midnight, which is usually the highlight of the event, half an hour early! He then proceeded to fumble with numbers by counting down from 50. By the time he got to zero, the crowd had already lost morale. The crowd was less pleased with his incessant rants and raves, which interrupted the music flow with phrases like “Okay party people!” and “2015, do you hear me!”. This year’s festival was also marred with ratchet revellers, who forced others to keep a close eye on their belongings. Hopefully, the next instalment of Hakuna Matata Festival will keep the riff-raff at bay and let the cleancut crowd have their fun!

The contemporary gospel artiste executes the song so passionately that the video brings tears to the eyes. It is a track that anyone can relate to and will definitely rule the charts for long.
Pair it with a neutral coloured top or blouse, a white one would be perfect. The skirt is the main attraction keep it that way. Go for high heels or wedges, this way you get to accentuate your legs. Keep accessories to the minimum; a beaded necklace or bangle.

Valencia scuttle Real 22-match winning streak Real Madrid’s club record 22-match winning run was cut short by Nicolas Otamendi’s fine header as Valencia came from behind to secure victory. Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty put Real in front, his 33rd goal of the season. But Valencia made it 1-1 seven minutes into second half through Antonio Barragan’s deflected shot. Otamendi then powered the ball in from a corner. It was Real’s first fall since they lost to city rivals and La Liga champions Atletico Madrid on 13 September. The result lifted Valencia, beaten just once at home all season, into
the Champions League places. Carlo Ancelotti’s side would not have envisaged that scenario when they took an early lead through Ronaldo. After Gareth Bale had been fouled, a free-kick from Tony Kroos was flicked on by Bale against the arm of on-loan Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo. Ronaldo converted from the spot but then missed an excellent chance to double Real’s lead when he rounded goalkeeper Diego Alves but, from a tight angle, shot into the side netting. Valencia had five players booked in the first half but struck a post
through a deflected Andre Gomes shot in stoppage time. And they were the better side in the second half, levelling when former Liverpool player Barragan scored his first league goal for the club with a shot which was diverted past Iker Casillas by defender Pepe. Bale was then denied by a Otamendi tackle at the other end before the Argentina international won it with a towering header with 25 minutes to go. Negredo impressed for Valencia who withstood anxious late moments as Isco close-range header was saved by Alves.
TIME TO SHINE: Nicolas Otamendi celebrates his goal with teammate Lucas Alfonso Orban (No 6) that gave Valencia the second win in 11 home games against Real Madrid. Walking away dejected is Madrid’s Pepe.
Champs Orange to beef up squad with youthful talent Seventeen-time Kenya Hockey Union national women’s league champions Telkom Orange will recruit youthful players to beef up the squad ahead of the new season. The Africa champions are expected to have a busy season as they defend the national and continental titles. The club provides the bulk of players to
the national team and are at least expected to strengthen the squad. But Orange coach Jos Openda says he has no plans for big names to his camp and will instead give chance to players from the feeder club Orange Young Rovers. The national team is due for the World League Two championship in February
in India and will also take part in the Continental Olympics qualifiers later in the year. “We are concentrating on beefing up the squad from our youth programme,” Openda said. “There is no need going for experienced players while we can nurture our own, that is the policy of the club,” Openda said.

Anzhi youth team player shot dead Gasan Magomedov, a 20-year-old footballer for Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, has been shot dead near his home in Russia’s North Caucasus. Magomedov was driving on Saturday when his car was hit with machine-gun fire and he died from his wounds while being transported to hospital, Anzhi said. No arrests have been made and the motive is unclear, the club added. Anzhi sent “deepest condolences” to the family of Magomedov, a midfielder in the club’s youth and reserve teams. There were no reports of any other casualties. Anzhi chief executive Sergey Korablev said: “We grieve together with everyone who was dear to Gasan. “I hope the police quickly find the killers and they suffer just punishment.” The region of Dagestan, where the attack took place and where Anzhi Makhachkala are based, has become the focus of Islamist militant activity in the North Caucasus. Gun battles between rebels and Russian security forces are not uncommon.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has given Gor Mahia and Sofapaka special go-ahead to sign up to seven foreign players to boost their squads ahead of their CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup campaigns. In a statement, FKF president Sam Nyamweya said this was to give them a chance to progress to the latter lucrative stages of the continental competitions. However, the two clubs will only be permitted to use a maximum five foreign players in next season’s Kenyan Premier League as the rules dictate. “Also our clubs need to set their eyes on signing players from other countries as it is common with other top African sides with an aim of reaching the CAF quarter final stages where the monetary gains are huge. “Currently Kenyan clubs are allowed to sign only five foreigners but as a federation we have seen the need to expand the signing to seven players for the two clubs as they prepare for the CAF Champions league and CAF Confederations cup kicking off in February,” Nyamweya’s statement read.

Injera, others axed Kenya 7s players back in squad Collins Injera, one of the players who had been excluded from the national sevens-aside team after asking for improved terms are back in the team ahead of next month’s IRB legs in Wellington and Las Vegas. Injera’s return comes in the wake of
wrangles at the Kenya Rugby Union that saw the exit of chairman Mwangi Muthee in the initial legs of the series. Coach Steve Sewe says Injera’s comeback will bring back confidence in the national team. Several senior players, including
Oscar Ouma, Patrice Agunda and Michael Wanjala boycotted national assignments. Injera says he will seek to save the national 7s team from being relegated from the IRB series. Also expected back in the team are Mwamba’s Lavin Asego and
Quins’ Felix Ayange who is nursing an injury. Others are Strathmore Leos winger Billy Odhiambo, scrumhalf Michael Wanjala and utility back Tony Owuor. Sewe said he expects a full house when the team resumes training today, adding that
competition for places will be intense for the next two legs. “I expect a full house for our training sessions in the New Year with the coming of the young players who have put their heads up in the first three legs.

World number seven Eugenie Bouchard of Canada suffered 6-0 6-4 to Lucie Safarova fall to Czech Republic on day one of the Hopman Cup.
Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska, the world number six, made a solid start as she defeated Casey Dellacqua of Australia 6-2 6-3. The 2015 season starts in earnest next week with Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova leading the men’s and women’s draws in Brisbane. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will line up at Qatar Open in Doha.
Arsenal launched the defence of their FA Cup with a hard-fought win as Hull City failed to gain a measure of revenge for last year’s final fall. Per Mertesacker rose above the Hull defence to head in the opener from an Alexis Sanchez corner. Arsenal controlled the first half and almost doubled the lead before Hull’s Paul McShane cleared off the line. Hull grew in confidence after halftime but Sanchez’s sharp turn and
calm finish inside 18 yards sealed victory. The Chile forward has become Arsenal’s talisman produced another moment of quality eased any lingering fears of Hull snatching a late draw at the Emirates. In truth, the Tigers rarely looked capable of avenging their dramatic 3-2 defeat at Wembley last May and this third-round tie failed to match the fever and tension of last season’s showpiece.
Manchester United overcame a gallant challenge from League One strugglers Yeovil Town before romping into the FA Cup fourth round at Huish Park. Gary Johnson’s side, who are rooted at the bottom of the table, matched the Premier League power house before quality finally told on a misty afternoon in Somerset. United, however, had the class to avoid a potential giant-killing as Ander
Herrera’s spectacular strike just after the hour and a second from Angel Di Maria gave Louis van Gaal’s side victory. Yeovil will rue a miss from Kieffer Moore that could have given the Glovers something to cling to. United were unimpressive for large portions of the game, with Van Gaal removing both wing-backs Rafael and Luke Shaw at half-time due to injury.

Moyes’ Sociedad stops Barca David Moyes’s Real Sociedad stopped Barcelona going top of La Liga thanks to an early own goal from Jordi Alba. Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat at Valencia earlier in the day would have allowed the Catalans to edge ahead in the title race if they had won. Moyes said: “The win feels similar to the early days at Everton. “How was I ever going to get a result against the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United at that time?” But coach Luis Enrique started with Lionel Messi, Neymar and Dani Alves on the bench following the festive break. And they were unable to inspire a fight back as Moyes secured a memorable second win as Sociedad manager. Messi, Neymar and Alves only returned to training last Friday after an extended break in South America during the league’s Christmas shutdown. Enrique took the gamble of starting without them for a fixture that has proved tricky for Barcelona in the past. And so it proved again with their winless run at Anoeta now extended to six games. In Moyes’s previous two home La Liga games, former Arsenal striker Carlos Vela had struck in the opening five minutes. And while there was to be no repeat for Vela, Sociedad were still ahead after just two minutes as Alba headed a cross from Sergio Canales past his own keeper. For a team which had already beaten Real Madrid and defending champions Atletico Madrid in San Sebastian this season, it was the perfect start. Sociedad have been difficult to beat under Moyes, with just two losses in their previous seven matches since the former Manchester United and Everton boss took over in November and they clung tenaciously to their lead. Sociedad defended superbly with goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli making his one real save four minutes from time when dashing out to save at the feet of Luis Suarez as Moyes’s side held on to move up to 13th in the table five points above the drop zone. Barcelona’s next La Liga game is against champions Atletico Madrid next Sunday.
FAMOUS AGAIN: Real Sociedad’s coach, David Moyes, shakes hands with Lionel Messi during the close-fought La Liga match with Barcelona on Sunday night.

Akinfenwa calls Wimbledon, Liverpool clash biggest game AFC Wimbledon’s FA Cup thirdround tie at home to Liverpool tonight is bigger than the Champions League final, Dons striker Adebayo Akinfenwa says. The hosts will be playing in the third round for the first time since their rebirth in 2002, and lifelong Liverpool fan Akinfenwa is particularly excited. “It’s the biggest game, there is no bigger,” the 32-year-old said. “I am a Liverpool supporter so even if I played in the Champions League final, this would be the biggest game.” Akinfenwa, who is playing for his 11th club, added:
“I was doing a dance in my living room when I saw the draw. “As a Liverpool supporter, the three best feelings are: to play for the team, to play against the team and score against them. I have the opportunity to do two out of three.” The tie is a repeat of the 1988 FA Cup final when the original Wimbledon FC beat Liverpool 1-0 at Wembley thanks to Lawrie Sanchez’s header. It is a sell-out, with 4,800 tickets sold, and Akinfenwa, who is considered to be the world’s strongest footballer because he can bench-
press 180kg, has promised the Reds defence they will have a difficult night against the League Two outfit. “I want to play against the best so I want to go toe-to-toe with Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho, Dejan Lovren and Kolo Toure,” said Akinfenwa, who has scored nine goals this season. “They are Premier league players and you want to be able to look back and say: ‘I pitted myself against the best and handled myself well’. “If there’s a 50-50, hopefully I will come out on top. I would back myself... 100%.”
