resident Uhuru Kenyatta last evening told the International Criminal Court (ICC) to “leave Kenyans alone” even as the government launches bid to thwart the use of recanted evidence in the ongoing case against Deputy President William Ruto and Joshua arap Sang. While addressing residents of Eldoret town ahead of a two-day tour of the North Rift region, President Kenyatta said Kenyans have resolved to live peacefully and that the ICC should keep off Kenya’s internal affairs. In an apparent reference to his Deputy who has sometimes had to request the court to excuse him from attending proceedings and allow him attend State functions, Kenyatta said it is time the ICC gave room to the country to run its affairs peacefully without disturbance. “That is why we are telling those people who are trying to incite Kenyans on issues that are long forgotten that we are tired of their interference. Instead of disturbing us, they should go resolve the conflicts in Syria and Iraq and give us room to move our country forward,” he said in reference to the postelection skirmishes of 2007/2008. He added: “We are appealing to friendly countries to support us in our agenda of consolidating peace and unity in Kenya.” Kenyatta expressed optimism that just like he overcame the ICC case, Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang will also emerge victorious. The Head of State was addressing Eldoret residents on the second day of his tour which also saw him visit Bungoma and Kisumu counties. He said Jubilee administration has not lost its focus on achieving its twin objective of uniting the country and improving the lives of Kenyans. He said the government is committed to ensuring that the development momentum that the country has gained is not slowed down by external or internal disruptions. Ruto said the Jubilee Government means business in its agenda of uniting and developing the country. “When we decided that we will unite Kenyans, eradicate tribalism and develop the country, we meant business,” the Deputy President said. Their remarks came on a week Kenya is preparing to mount a fierce campaign to lobby the Assembly of State Parties (ASP) to overturn the admission of the use

of recanted evidence in the case against Ruto and Sang. About 85 MPs and technocrats including the Attorney General, The Director of Public Prosecutions and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed are

expected to lobby for Kenya’s position at the conference that begins on Wednesday. Top on Kenya’s agenda is reversing the court’s decision that allowed the use of recanted evidence in the case facing Ruto and Sang. CS Amina Mohamed says the

decision unilaterally overturned an agreement made by the ASP in 2013. “It was clear to everyone that any amendments to rule 68 would not apply retrogressively to cases that were already before the court. There was a clear understanding

that it would not apply to the Kenyans cases. It therefore came as a surprise to us because it basically ignored the understanding of state parties and the understanding that anything agreed on cannot be unilaterally overturned,” she said yesterday. “We are going to argue that the understanding that existed in 2013 be reinstated,” she added. Kenya’s request is contained in a supplementary agenda set to be discussed at the conference. Already, African countries are backing Kenya in her quest to have the provision reinstated. Ambassador Mohamed also said that they will be seeking to have a five-judge bench created to audit the functions of the court, a demand Jubilee MPs have previously made during one of their many prayer rallies. “By proposing that we set up an independent audit, we would like to see a more effective oversight of the court than currently exist,” Dr Amina said on Citizen TV last night.

Corruption weighs Uhuru down, new poll indicates The inaction by President Uhuru Kenyatta to deal with the runaway corruption in government has seen his rating drop from 59.8 per cent to in 2014 to 33.7 per cent this year. A poll carried out Infotrak research and consulting firm indicates that the persistence corruption of the government coupled with poor performing economy have been the major undoing of the Jubilee government. The poll conducted between November 6 and 9 indicates that the Jubilee government has lost 10 per cent approval while Uhuru has lost 26 per cent approval. The poll whose findings were released yesterday, has warned that the citizenry is a disappointed lot and should the government fail to combat corruption and improve the economy, then the rating will dip further. Corruption remains at the apex of the most concerns among Kenyans at 40 per cent, high cost of living 13 per cent, unemployment 12 per cent, insecurity nine per cent, quality of education at five per cent while sewage and sanitation remain the least concern among Kenyans at 0.1 per cent. “Kenyans feel so strongly about corruption that they have further indicated that those public officials must be dealt with as a matter of urgency,” said Angela Ambitho, Infotrak CEO

On what action should be taken, public officers implicated in corruption, 60 per cent of the respondents say they should be prosecuted immediately, 16 per cent say they step aside, 23 per cent want them to resign,17 per cent want them to be barred from holding any public office while 12 per cent want them to return the loot they have stolen. The Opposition’s recent resurgence and heightened activities in speaking out on ills in the government has seen its ratings increase by seven per cent since last year while Cord leader Raila Odinga ratings have also increased from 19.3 per cent to 28.7 per cent. The findings indicate that should the Opposition maintain their current momentum with their legislators in Parliament and their luminaries outside the House, they will quickly win the confidence of Kenyans as an effective Opposition. More than 60 per cent of Kenyans think the country is moving in the wrong direction, 27 per cent of those polled think the country is in the right track while 11 per cent don’t know where the country is headed to. The survey was conducted in 25 counties in all the former eight provinces and was sponsored by Infotrak Research and consulting firm. A sample of 1000 respondents were interviewed.

Uhuru defends KDF from sugar smuggling claims President Uhuru Kenyatta has expressed solidarity with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) fighting in Somalia, and rubbished a report implicating them in sugar and charcoal smuggling racket. Uhuru who spoke in Western Kenya has warned against trivialising KDF work, saying Kenya is safe because of the military work in the neighbouring lawless country. “The other day I was very surprised by some fellow Kenyans claiming our soldiers in Somalia are engaged in illegal deals. Instead of them being the first to see how we can protect the soldiers who have sacrificed their lives to protect us they are busy making reckless statements. I have never seen such stupidity. The government will strongly stand by our soldiers in Somalia,” he said. He cited Friday night’s terror attack in France where more than 150 people were killed when terrorists stormed a cinema, stadium and restaurant. “We know what they are doing every day to ensure that we all can sleep in safety. You have seen what happened in France where more than 128 people have died as a result of terrorists. You want us to allow these people to walk amongst us. You want our soldiers to leave Somalia where they are protecting us so that these people can come into the country to bring us trouble?” he posed. Bomber blew off explosives 15 minutes to soccer match The first suicide bomber detonated his explosives 15 minutes into Friday night’s international soccer match between France and Germany at the Stade de France. The explosives used were of poor quality, the Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said -- but they were enough to scatter the bloodied remains of the bombers dozens of meters away. One person who was walking by was killed in the attack. Several others were injured. Investigators are now looking at the sequence of events: security guards in the area told CNN that one of the bombers tried to enter the stadium but was stopped by security. But while forensics teams have swept the area, grisly evidence remained on the streets outside the stadium Sunday morning, more than 36 hours later. Yves Buck lives near the stadium. “I was sad when I saw the blood on the walls,” he said, “but not when I found out it was suicide bomber. “I can’t imagine if it had happened a few minutes sooner -- it was crowded. God help us!” Nuts and bolts that formed part of one of the bomber’s suicide belts were also lying on the ground, even embedded behind the smashed glass of shops opposite the stadium. One of the fences next to the point of detonation had been dented by the impact of a bolt. Onlookers wandered around the scene, apparently unaware of the blood and tiny, barely noticeable pieces of ripped clothing lying on the ground. But others cannot forget what they saw on Friday night. Kevin Tulga had just gone through the stadium entrance with his 10-year-old son when the bomber detonated behind him. “We saw body parts there. I didn’t want my son to see any of this. We were in front of the stadium. We didn’t think. We had no idea what was happening. So I covered his eyes, took his arm and just ran.” The stains outside the Stade de France -- scene of the national team’s 1998 World Cup victory -- will wash off. But the feeling persists in Paris that another attack may come. Tulga still has his tickets to Friday’s game. His son can’t sleep and Tulga, who came to France as a Kurdish refugee, says he doubts he will take the youngster to another match.

France launches airstrikes in wake of Paris attacks French fighter jets bombed a series of ISIS sites in Raqqa, Syria, on Sunday in what officials described as a major bombardment. The airstrikes came two days after a series of terrorist attacks in Paris. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which France’s President described as “an act of war.” ISIS claims Raqqa as the capital of its so-called caliphate. The targets in Sunday’s airstrikes included a command center, a recruitment center, an ammunition storage base and a training camp for the terror group, said Mickael Soria, press adviser for France’s defense minister. Twelve aircraft, including 10 fighter jets, were involved in the airstrikes, Soria said. Twenty bombs were dropped, he said, and all of the targets were destroyed. An ISIS media wing claimed the sites had been abandoned before they were hit and said there were no casualties. France has been conducting airstrikes against ISIS in Syria since September as part of a U.S.-led coalition. But the timing of Sunday’s airstrikes likely was no coincidence, analysts said. “Clearly, it’s a military activity, but it really sends a very strong political

message, and it’s all for internal consumption within France,” said retired Maj. Gen. James “Spider” Marks, a CNN military analyst. “This is very visceral. The types of targets they strike right now really are symbolic. From the French perspective, something has to be done.” The planes involved in the French airstrikes took off from the United Arab Emirates and Jordan in a mission carried out in coordination with U.S. forces, the French

defense ministry said in a statement late Sunday. The sites targeted inside Raqqa were identified in previous French reconnaissance missions, the statement said. But what impact did the airstrikes have? It’s hard to know what’s happening on the ground inside Raqqa. Since ISIS took over, the city has become increasingly isolated -- with an activist group known as Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently providing outsiders with a harrowing glimpse of the

city’s transformation. On Sunday, the activist collective said that the city appeared to be bracing for an attack even before the French airstrikes began. ISIS fighters in Raqqa had expected retaliatory airstrikes and evacuated key facilities, including their headquarters, operation and security buildings, a member of Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently said. Streets were empty, the activists said, markets were less crowded than usual and sheikhs in mosques said they expected the city to

be struck. The airstrikes hit several key ISIS facilities, including the city’s stadium, activists said, used by ISIS as both its headquarters and a jail. It was not immediately clear what the damage was. So far, according to Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently, there have been no reports of civilian casualties. The ISIS media wing Amaaq also said the sites hit by airstrikes had been abandoned and that no one had been killed in the airstrikes. CNN has not independently confirmed the groups’ reports.

Manhunt for Paris attack suspects

A huge manhunt is under way for surviving members and accomplices of the Islamist group that killed 129 people in Paris on Friday night. Police have named Salah Abdeslam, 26 (pictured) , as a key suspect. He was reportedly stopped by officers in the wake of the attacks - but then let go. The investigation is now focusing on Belgium, where several of the attackers were reportedly based. Meanwhile, French aircraft have attacked the Syrian stronghold of IS. The Islamic State group has said it was behind Friday’s gun and bomb attacks on Parisian bars and restaurants, a concert hall and the Stade de France, the country’s main sports stadium. Seven attackers died in the assault on the French capital, most of them after detonating suicide belts. They

include Brahim Abdeslam, 31 named as attacker who died near Bataclan concert hall, Ismail Omar Mostefai, 29, from near Paris - died in attack on Bataclan and Bilal Hadfi, 20 - named as attacker who died at Stade de France. Four other attackers died during the assaults in the city. However, another suspect Salah Abdeslam, 26, is urgently being sought by police. His accomplice Mohammed Abdeslam was reportedly arrested in Belgium. Salah Abdeslam is said to have rented a VW Polo car that was found near the Bataclan concert hall, where 89 people died, and believed to have been used by attackers. On Saturday he was in a vehicle near the Belgian border which was stopped by police, officials said. He was reportedly questioned, had his papers checked and was then released along with two other men who were also in

the car. It is unclear whether the French authorities had matched the VW Polo found at the Bataclan venue to him at the time he was stopped. Police have described Salah Abdeslam as dangerous, and warned people not to approach him. He is one of three Belgium-based brothers linked to Friday’s attacks, officials say. Another, Brahim Abdeslam, 31, is said to have been an attacker who blew himself up outside a bar on the Boulevard Voltaire near the Bataclan, wounding one person. A third brother, Mohammed, was reportedly arrested in the Brussels neighbourhood of Molenbeek while returning from Paris and remains in custody. Belgian police say they have made a total of seven arrests. Officials said the brothers were traced following the discovery

of two rental cars registered in Belgium - the VW Polo rented by Salah Abdeslam, and a Seat containing Kalashnikov automatic rifles that was found abandoned in the Paris suburb of Montreuil. One of three attackers who died at the Stade de France after detonating suicide

Good news for Equity clients as bank withdraws higher interest on loans Equity bank has today announced the withdrawal of a month notice to increase interest rates on loans following the government’s slashing down of Treasury Bills. Speaking today during a media briefing, Equity Group Chief Executive Dr James Mwangi said their customers will maintain their old interest rates on loans. While releasing Equity Group’s third quarter results, Dr Mwangi had predicted that the high interest rates regime would be short lived and would be over by the first quarter of 2016. ‘’We are pleasantly impressed with the high speed at which the government has been able to reduce the Treasury bill rates,’’ he said. ‘’As we anticipated, the rise in interest was a shortterm measure but it has

been shorter that we had anticipated and hence the withdrawal of interest rates increase notice,’’ he said. Mwangi said the underlying macro-economic conditions did not justify high interest rates hence the bank’s believe that this was a temporary condition. He said inflation has remained within target just a month of import cover have remained firmly above four months minimum requirement while current account deficit has been narrowing as a result of improving Balance of Trade. ‘’Now that the government has affirmed our believe, we are confirming that we are also not increasing interest rates on loans after all. We thank the government for the intervention and for removing the headwinds on the macro-economic environment,’’ he said.

therise Atlas Development and support Services top gainer Atlas Development and Support Services (ADSS) was the week’s top gainer for the second consecutive week after it announced plan to set up a joint venture in Ethiopia in partnership with Orchid Business Group PLC (‘Orchid’). The share price was up 27.27 per cent to Sh3.50 from the previous week’s Sh2.75. Orchid specialises in infrastructure, c o n s t r u c t i o n , manufacturing and logistics while ADSS specialises in providing the full spectrum of services including risk management consulting, civil engineering, provision of remote workforce accommodation, facilities management, turnkey medical support, transportation and storage. The joint venture which is on a 50:50 basis is aimed at providing services to clients primarily in the natural resource development and infrastructure sectors. Year to date, ADSS shares have come under sell-side pressure and have lost 71 per cent of their value due to the ongoing slowdown in oil extraction activities in the region.

thefall Nairobi Securities Exchange take dip Nairobi Securities Exchange took this week’s position of top losing stock following a 10.19 per cent slide in its share price over the course of the week’s trading. NSE shares ended the week at a price of Sh24.25 from their previous closing price of Sh27. The fall in share price was, however, caused by profit taking by investors. Act, 1998 (No2 of 1998) (KICA) with “far reaching consequences to the telecoms sector.” “The company is concerned that in developing the bill, due process was not followed. Airtel Kenya as a key stakeholder was not consulted in the process of making these amendments to the KICA,” Airtel said in a recently released statement. “The sector regulator, the Communication Authority of Kenya

(CA) and Ministry of Information and Communications Technology have according to statements in the media claimed the proposed amendments did not originate from them. These claims are very worrying given the far reaching ramifications of the proposed changes in the law,” he said. Airtel claimed the CA and the CS for Ministry of Information and Communications Technology are

not aware of the changes. The amendments include the deletion of Section 84W (4) of Kenya Information and Communications (Amendment) Act, which currently mandates the CA to declare by notice in the Gazette, an institution to be a “dominant telecommunications service provider” for the purposes of this Act. “The definition of dominance was very recently reviewed and revised as

part of the amendments to the Kenya Information and Communications (Amendment) Act in 2013. By taking away this power from CA, CA will no longer be in a position to deal with Ex-Ante regulation,” Airtel added. Airtel, the second largest network in Kenya, has said that the move goes against international best practice and may kill competition and lead to a monopoly.

Reprieve for motorist as ERC slashes petrol prices by Sh2 Motorists will pay less for oil as the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) announced reduced pump prices of petrol, diesel and kerosene. The energy regulator issued reduced prices of super petrol by Sh2.83 per litre, diesel by Sh2.77 per litre and kerosene by Sh1.23 per litre effective from November 15 to December 14. The price of Super petrol decreased by 3.12 per cent, from $564.47 (Sh57, 889) in September 2015 to $546.85 (Sh56, 082) per tonne in October 2015. Diesel decreased by 2.78 per cent over the same period from $521.43 (Sh53, 475) per tonne to $506.93 (Sh51,988) per tonne. However, the average landed cost of imported kerosene during the same period increased by 1.19 per cent from $504.86 (Sh51,775) per tonne to $510.88 (Sh52,393) per tonne. Super petrol will now retail at Sh90.46 in Nairobi, while diesel will now cost Sh79.66 a Sh2.77 drop. Kerosene to retail at Sh54.89 “Petrol marketing companies and dealers are reminded that it is an offence to sell petroleum products above the maximum prices as published and anyone found contravening the directive is liable to a fine of up to Sh1 million with a risk of having their licences withdrawn,” warned Ng’ang’a in a statement.

Energy Regulatory Commission Director General Engineer Joseph Ng’ang’a said the decision was informed by a decrease in the average landed cost of imported refined petroleum products.

The regulator also said the purpose of the fuel pricing regulations is to cap the pump prices of the products

for the products which are already in the country, so that the importation and other prudently incurred costs

are recovered even as consumers are assured of reasonable prices.

Japanese firms reluctant to raise workers’ renumeration

Japan’s economy has fallen on hard times though its firms seem to be doing quite well, economists have noted. Japanese companies have continued to be wary of using their record profits to raise wages and invest in the economy due, in part, to the country’s ongoing recession. The reluctance has been seen as a major challenge for Japan’s Prime Minister’s Shinzo Abe’s policies, which aim to boost the country’s economy. Japan’s economy has fallen into recession again after it shrank 0.8 per cent on an annualised basis in the third quarter of 2015. The preliminary data means the world’s third largest economy has contracted for a second consecutive quarter, marking a technical recession, the BBC reports. Japan has been in recession four times since the global financial crisis. Economists said the weak data will put more pressure on the government and central bank to continue to stimulate the economy. Consumer spending in the country has picked up from the hit it took last year from an increase in sales tax in April, which contributed to the recession in 2014. Despite the declining growth, the government is positive that a recovery is underway.

Poor oral hygiene blame for gum First Lady kicks bleeding, first-ever study reveals off massive tree planting initiative in Northern Kenya

The Ministry of Health has released Kenya’s first-ever oral health survey, pinpointing dental health issues affecting the population. The survey comes at a time when the country has been conducting health surveys for various diseases including malaria and tuberculosis. The latter two surveys have enabled the government to receive financial support from donors and the private sector. Kenya’s Tuberculosis Prevalence Survey for 2015-2016 received upwards of Sh1billion in funding from the united States as part of a collaboration between the Kenya government and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Kenya’s Oral Health Survey has revealed that three out of four children in Kenya suffer from gum bleeding due to poor oral hygiene practices. The survey further revealed that children aged five years had a dental caries prevalence of 46.3per cent while the overall fluorosis (the coloration of teeth due to water having higher levels of fluorine) among children was 41.7 per cent. In addition, the proportion of children who had never visited a dentist was 46.7 per cent. Similarly, prevalence of gum bleeding among adults was equally high at 98.1

per cent. Only 72.3 per cent of the adults interviewed had visited a dentist before and 83 per cent had a dental related problem while 3.3 per cent had gone for routine dental checkup. Almost all (99.9 per cent) reported having one form of dental related problem in the previous year. Findings from the survey, which was released at the weekend show that low frequency and effectiveness in brushing teeth is to blame for the high incidence of gum bleeding cases.

The survey was conducted between August and November 2014. A total of 2,298 children and 1,462 adults participated in the study. Data on oral health practices, knowledge, and oral health status was collected from participants in fifteen sites spread throughout the country. Oral health status and diseases are described between urban, peri-urban and rural populations as well among different age groups 5, 12, 15, 35 to 44 and adults over 65 years.

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta has lauded the National Bank for contributing towards environmental conservation through a massive afforestation and town greening programme. Speaking in Mandera where she officially launched the bank’s Northern Kenya greening initiative, Mrs Kenyatta applauded bank for planting 2.5 million trees around the country. She said the initiative is going a long way to mitigate effects of climate change. Kenya’s forest cover had reduced to 1.7 per cent by 2002 following a period of environmental degradation and has been gradually improving, reaching 6 per cent in 2012. “It is such efforts as this one by NBK that are helping the government move closer to the 10 per cent forest cover

goal recommended by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP),” she said. NBK’s Kenya@50 tree planting programme has been amassing a forest cover of 100,000 trees with every branch it launches since the new management took over in 2013. During the two and half years, National bank added 25 new brick and mortar branches, one of the fastest growth rates in the industry. “We are committed to ensuring that the change happening inside National Bank under our transformation plan is embodied in the environment around us through the tree planting cause. We are alive to the higher calling of National Bank as a bank that carries a lot of Kenyans aspirations,” said NBK’s Managing Director and CEO Munir Sheikh Ahmed said.

new acT factfile Favoutie Model: Malaika Firth Age: I turned 25 yesterday. Quote: You are beautifully and wonderfully made.

Harriet Maleche

Hariette has declared her interest to take the international modelling scene by storm, starting from being photographed by Naomi Campbell’s official photographer. From the little county of Kakamega, she is out to conquer the world.

W

ho is Harriet Maleche? Harriet is a happy person. An up and coming International model and a student currently pursuing a masters in Marketing. How did you begin your modelling career? I was pushed by my sister… you know what I mean…to participate for the Elite Model Look however, I was not picked to be a participant. After not being picked for Elite I applied to represent Kenya in Italy for Miss Motors. My application was successful. How was your experience in Italy? I really enjoyed representing Kenya and meeting new people. It’s this opportunity to go Italy that opened my eyes to many possibilities. I have travelled across the world from China to the USA and Europe. I have met many people of diverse cultures. What do you think of our Kenyan culture in comparison to the others? East or West home is best. I love our culture. What are your achievements so far? This year I was a nominee for Diaspora Entertainment Award (DEA) normally held in the United States by Kenyans in the Diaspora. I did not win any award but I am grateful for being a nominee. However, a week ago I was privileged to represent Kenya in Miss Bikini/ European Tourism. I emerged tops and Miss Public Opinion and Popularity category. I was the only African in the event. How was the competition and how did you feel after winning? The competition was tough. We were standing out in the cold. You know

Europe is experiencing winter now. So we were standing waiting to have winners announced….They called out my name four times before I registered that I had actually won! I felt very good for representing my country. Is modelling all about glam and fame? For me, it not just about the fame and glam it’s about being passionate about your work. How do you rate the Kenyan modeling industry? We are getting there. In Europe and In America, those guys are serious and it a whole lot different and girls even attend modelling schools as a career in life. Are there any competitions in the near future? Yes…having attended more than five occasions I am expecting to be leaving to Sao Tome for Miss Exquisite. I am also planning to have a photo shoot in the USA with Naomi Campbell’s official photographer. Any other Plans locally? I have lots in my head which include continuation of my charity work. I am currently working with Senator Boni Khalwale to have Cancer Treatment Centers in Kakamega. I also have plans to open up my modelling agency to give other girls an opportunity to model and perhaps have pageantry. What’s your advice to aspiring models? Learn how to avoid people who will put you down especially on social media and never forget that success does not come easy.

The one time high flying female boxer, received help from Kenyan personalities who included Mike Sonko and Alfred Mutua at an event dubbed Boxing under the Stars held at the Carnivore, Saturday. This was after the pugilist was beaten senseless in her home town after she apparently started a fight in a drunken stuper. A love story within Mathew a love story; and Irene friend’s wedding that they got talking seriously and decided to give love a try. “As you can see,” says Matthew pointing to himself and his bride, “It worked out.” He further tells X Access that he proposed to Irene during 2014 Valentine’s Day and that he was quite confused when instead of saying yes, she just hugged him and started crying. “I had to confirm that the hug actually meant yes when she finally calmed down,” he jokes. The wedding ceremony was held at ACK Kiambu, with the best couple being the friends at whose wedding Irene and Matthew met. The two unanimously chose yellow and purple as their theme colors, yellow they said denoted freshness and purple a sign of royalty. The bridesmaids chose red to break the dullness of a fully yellow outfit and a subtle Kente pattern sewn into different areas

of their dresses. The groomsmen were clad in navy blue suits with the allowance of both a white or light purple shirt and a tie. The combination was to say the least, exquisite. When the exchange of matrimonial vows and wedding bands as well as a short sermon was done with, the bridal party progressed for a photoshoot at Kiambu Drive-in Gardens and later rejoined family and

friends for the wedding reception. The highlight was the gift presentation session where the couple’s parents surprised the newlyweds with keys to a brand new house in one of Kitengela’s high-rise estates. The joy was tangible. Unlike local custom, the couple did not immediately go for their honeymoon but they revealed that it was scheduled for Maasai Mara in December after the rains subside. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Bosire.

PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 Your masculine and feminine sides may be saying completely different things today, but this situation isn’t necessarily bad. You can learn a lot from both sides of your being. Take the most useful aspects of each and put them toward achieving your goals. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 Turn one part of the project over to someone you feel is more qualified to handle it. There’s no sense trying to do everything yourself when you know someone out there is better suited to the task. Today calls for a steady and patient hand. TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 You may feel emotionally good but the more you express yourself the more critical others become of your sensitivity. Unfortunately, you may clam up under such circumstances. Hang onto the fact that you have something valuable to teach, but other people aren’t ready to learn. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 Listen to your deepest, strongest feelings and take things slowly. Plan your actions and consider the emotions of others before you take the first step. Enjoy the rest and use the time to plan ahead instead of acting rashly and running full throttle to the next task. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 Things should come together nicely as long as you’ve done the necessary prep work to make it successful. If you’ve done the preliminaries, the next step will be easy. If you’ve neglected to take care of these details, you’ll scramble to do many different things at once. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 Your witty, social attitude may not be appreciated, given the emotional and sober mood of the day. You adjust your outfit to reflect current weather patterns. If you dress in silk, you won’t be too happy when it rains and you have no umbrella. What is the mood? How can you fit in with it and lift it? VIRGO Aug 23-Sep 21 Your emotions might be raw today, and you may act rashly because of the way you feel. Realize that some people may not appreciate this behavior. Let your emotions be an asset that helps fuel your passion, but don’t let them rule you entirely. LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 The good news is that thanks to your flexible, adaptable nature, any league can always become yours after you take the steps to work the crowd. Have patience and understanding as you learn a new set of rules and a new group of people with their own habits and behaviors. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 All of a sudden you may experience a burst of emotional energy that throws a monkey wrench into your plans. Don’t be surprised if you suddenly burst into tears over something that normally wouldn’t even faze you. Sometimes it’s important to let the emotions flow. Don’t try to hide them. SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 - Dec 21 You’re always taking action and directing your energy outward. Think about ways you can direct your energy inward and watch how this draws people to you. If nothing else, you’ll learn something about yourself by being more attentive to your thoughts and emotions.

Thursday’s answers

YOURSAY The West must get their acts right in anti-terror war After more than 150 students were killed at Garisa University CNN reported that “KENYA IS A HOTBED OF TERRORISM” next action was European and US governments issuing travel advisories to its citizens. Kenyan tourism, one of the economic pillars almost collapsed due to the advisories. These governments forgot that it could happen to them. The Friday terror attack in Paris, France which left at least 129 people dead is not good at all and must be condemned in the strongest term possible, but I want to also condemn double-

standards. We are yet to hear travel advisories being issued against France like it happens against African countries. Is it because France cannot be a hotbed of terrorism? No country is a hotbed of terrorism, now that is a fact! When we are hit by such a disaster, the west is always quick to judge and condemn governments of the day. Western countries should acknowledge that terrorism as a global disaster and stop treating terrorism in Africa differently. — Anonymous

Poor management to blame for National team woes The circus in the national team Harambee Stars depicts how low Kenya has fallen in terms of sports management. It is only in Kenya where foreign players make their travel arrangements to come represent the country. Cases of unpaid allowances running to millions and limited motivation the players are forced to grapple

with. Now I understand why former Stars player Mike Okoth’s son Divock Origi opted to play for Belgium, the father might have warned him the untold suffering he went through as a player. The 1-0 win against Cape Verde in a World Cup qualifier came as a surprise. Many did not expect anything from a poorly prepared team against

the continent’s top side that had been training abroad prior to the Friday match. One lesson was learnt from the match, that our soccer challenges are more of management than players, with good preparations, the team could go far. We wish the boys well in the second leg encounter in Cape Verde. —Bukende Stephen

Helb should relax penalty law on beneficiaries The Higher Education Loans Boards (Helb) needs to relax some of its laws if it intends to get former students to pay their debt. A Sh5,000 a month penalty has seen some people with arrears amounting to Sh0.25 million, the kind of money some people are lucky to make in a year.

Instead of keeping the penalties high, Helb should give waivers to those who are already struggling to pay off their debt. Their current waiver options are absurd and somewhat ineffective. How do they expect people to come up with Sh250, 000 in a single day when the waiver only applies to people who pay the lump sum? It

is easier to let people pay what they owe. And ONLY what they owe. The penalties make it look like some Kenyans will be paying Helb in monthly installments for their rest of their lives! The board may be cracking down hard on defaulters, but it needs to take a chill pill. — S.B.

If not checked, terrorism will divide the whole world The Friday terror attack in Paris that killed at least 129 people, is a major global humanitarian crisis, cutting across religions. Kenya has faced similar attacks in the recent past, the worst being the Garissa University college attack that left 147 dead. Terrorist are not only out to instil fear in people, but also to perpetuate a culture of intolerance among different religions. They are performing blasphemous acts in the name of appeasing their gods. For instance, a cab driver in town is crying

foul that he has been marginalised by his colleagues and even his clients as they term him “terrorist.” He is a Kenyan only that he belongs to the Muslim Community. His Somali origin betrays him more. Clients no longer feel at ease in his cab. Some allege that they cannot risk their lives being driven by a Jihadist. This signifies that the terror groups have accomplished intentions in creating disharmony and instilling fear. — Anonymous

Celebration opinion poll rating too cheap for Cord Kenyans should borrow a leaf from France attack The Paris terror attack that killed at least 129 people is a clear indication that the world must change tact in dealing with terrorism, but I must hail French citizens for conducting themselves decorously and uniting against the attackers. French citizens were united and considerate to the dead and their families. We never saw any dead bodies lying around on the

social media after the attack. This is contrary to what Kenyans shared in the wake of the Mandera bus attack and the Garissa University attack. Kenyans took to the social media to display bodies on the road and of the university students for the world to see. Kenyans should borrow a leaf from the French. — Anne

Coalition for Reformed and Democracy (Cord) leaders are excited by the recent poll that indicated President Uhuru Kenyatta popularity has dropped while Raila Odinga’s has risen. Just to give the Opposition a free advice, popularity is

neither winning nor votes. Celebrating Uhuru’s popularity drop or its leader’s rise is tantamount to dancing oneself lame before the actual party. For Cord to win the 2017 election, they have to deploy new strategies otherwise they might be

Kenya could lose IAAF seat over Sh75m Nike scandal

Athletics Kenya vice president David Okeyo position in the powerful IAAF Council is under threat over Sh75 million Nike deal scandal. He is under investigation and could be axed if found guilty, which will a big loss to the country and the region at large. Okeyo, who took over the council seat from the outgoing AK President Isaiah Kiplagat has been named together with former AK treasurer Joseph Kinyua and questioned by local detectives in April this year over the claims.

However, Okeyo on Sunday denied any wrongdoing, saying the detectives, who questioned him, have never given him any feedback neither have they come back for him at Riadha House offices. “I was called by detectives and gave my version of the story. Nike officials have also been interviewed and we have heard nothing since then,” Okeyo said. The allegations came as news to the IAAF, whose newly-elected president Sebastian Coe has come in for intense criticism for retaining his role as an ambassador for Nike.

“The IAAF was not aware of the investigation against Okeyo in Kenya and the information has immediately been passed on to the independent IAAF Ethics Commission,” IAAF said Sunday in a statement. “As part of the root and branch governance reform project that Sebastian Coe has announced, there will be new processes introduced to ensure all persons appointed to IAAF commissions and advisory groups in the future are duly vetted and declared as ‘fit and proper persons’ to hold office.

Uganda book place in World Cup group stage

Uganda is the first east African team to progress to the group stages of the Fifa World Cup, Russia 2018. Uganda beat West African giants Togo 4-0 on aggregate following a resounding 3-0 home victory at the Nelson Mandela national stadium, Kampala on Saturday to take their early ticket to the group stages. Skipper, Geoffrey Massa gave Cranes the lead following a 20-yards strike that eluded Togo custodian Djehani N’gussad for the opener after just five minutes of the game. A move started by William Luwagga Kizito on the right was finished off by Miya after a Gor Mahia’s Godfrey Walusimba’s well laid ball in the path of an on-rushing Miya for his second. Kenya will be chasing their group stages luck in the return leg against Cape Verde tomorrow in Praia. Harambee Stars beat highly-rated Cape Verde by a solitary goal at Nyayo National stadium last Friday. Meanwhile, Senegal fought back to draw 2-2 with Madagascar in the first leg of their 2018 World Cup qualifier.

France, England friendly to go on despite attack England’s friendly against France will go on as planned tomorrow despite Friday’s Paris terror attack that left at least 129 people dead. France, though mourning, will approach the match as favourites after beating World Cup holders Germany 2-0 on the fateful night, when a suicide bomber blew himself off at one of the entrance to the stadium where the match was taking place. England on the other side lost by a similar margin to Spain, which was Roy Hudson’s side’s first defeat since the 2014 World Cup. England went through Euro 2016 qualifying with a 100 per cent record, but they were shaken by dominant Spanish side that had more than 60 per cent possession. Tottenham striker Harry Kane has argued fans to ‘stay patient’ ahead of their clash with France.

UNDER PROBE: Athletics Kenya (AK) vice president David Okeyo is under investigation for alleged misuse of Sh75 million donated by American company Nike to sponsor sports activities and athletes in the country. He was questioned in April by detectives for the same. He has denied the allegations.

“More than 200 people were due to be appointed to new commissions and advisory groups at the council meeting later this month, but their appointment will now be delayed until the new procedures are in place,” the IAAF statement further said. During the April summon, Economics Crime Unit detectives wanted Okeyo and Kiplagat to explain more on the reports regarding the claims of misappropriation of Sponsorship money from Nike. Directorate of Criminal Investigation boss Ndegwa Muhoro said Okeyo was being grilled over a misuse of funds donated by American company, Nike and Pamodzi Sports Marketing (agents of Chinese Sports Apparel Li Ning. In 2010, AK wanted to terminate a contract with Nike and take on board Chinese apparel manufacturers Li Ning based in Beijing. The deal was brokered by Pamodzi Sports Marketing, a company owned by Papa Massata Diack, the son to IAAF President Lammie Diack. Massata later quit as the marketing consultant for the IAAF, in which he was in charge of emerging markets - India, China, the Gulf and Africa. Pamdozi wired Sh18 million to AK Kenya Commercial Bank’s Moi Avenue branch in September 3, 2010. The whole amount was withdrawn on September 9 by Okeyo. Diack, his son, adviser Habib Cisse and the former IAAF anti-doping chief Gabriel Dolle are all being investigated by French police over allegations they were complicit in covering up Russian doping, allegations they deny. The Sunday Times reported a response from Nike, in which a spokesman for the firm said it had acted with “integrity” in its dealings with AK and that the “expectation and understanding” of the AK sponsorship deal was that the funds would be “used to support and service the teams and athletes”. The spokesman added that Nike was co-operating with the local authorities in their investigation.

Khan replaces Simon in EA Classic Rally team Imran Khan has been called upon to fill the void left by Simon Phillips in the Comarco Rally Team for the 2015 Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally which zooms off on Thursday in Mombasa. Simon of ALS Racing Team pulled out of the championship on personal commitments and will be back in 2017, according to team driver Kailesh Chauhan. The thyme for Comarco Team this time round is “Save the Rhinos” “I am looking forward to the Safari Classic and above all, the 153km stage. I have a feeling that the long stage will be a good endurance run for all and that this is what will make or break this year’s Safari for crews,” said Kailesh, adding that

we would like our future generations to see these animals, yet rhinos are being killed for their horns daily. Meanwhile, ex-World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist will be navigated for the first time by Stéphane Prévot in the Porsche 911 and will take off third from the stage. The two have never rallied together before, but both have extensive experience in major rallies, particularly the World Rally Championship. Veteran Prévot started major events in 1991 with Bruno Thiry and has subsequently accompanied François Duval, Chris Atkinson, Alister McRae and, most recently, Stéphane Lefèbvre, his current WRC driver.

He has competed on the Safari Classic twice with fellow Belgian, Gérard Marcy in a Porsche 911 and on finished fourth overall in both occasions, 2009 and 2011. Prévot competed on the weekend’s WRC Wales Rally GB with Lefèvbre in a Citroën DS3 WRC and flew to Mombasa over the weekend. Staffan Parmander guided Blomqvist to second overall position in the 2013 Classic. The plan for the Safari Classic will include four days of the competitions on each side of prolonged rest halts. The first break will be at the Amboseli Lodge by the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro followed by another in Arusha before cars head for the finish in Mombasa.

PREMIER LEAGUE

Kenya Rugby Sevens player Dennis Ombachi escapes Francisco Vieira of Portugal during a past match. He scored a late try against Zimbabwe in Harare that saw Kenya book a place at the 2016 Rio Olympic yesterday.

Ombachi’s magical moment gifts Kenya maiden Olympic slot Dennis Ombachi gifted Kenya her first appearance at the Olympics when he scored the decisive try which helped Shujaa edge out Zimbabwe 19-17 to claim Africa’s sole ticket to Rio, 2016. Kenya looked set for yet another ‘so close yet so far’ moment, but Ombachi, in a classical characteristic of Kenyan never-say-die attitude raced over 65 metre to bury home the most important try, which will see Kenya returns to Olympics for the first time since 1924. Captain Andrew Amonde gave Kenya the lead with the first try which was converted by Eden Agero for a 7-0 advantage. Zimbabwe responded with two quick tries, converting for a 12-7 lead at the break.

Collins Injera was called to action when he converted his try to restore Kenya’s two point lead in one of the tensed match. Zimbabwe were set for a slim victory after they scored their third try- settling the game at 17-14. At this point, Kenya’s Olympics dream looked dimmed with each passing second, but then the big man of the moment, Ombachi raced forward with a piece of magic at the Bernard Stadium, Kempton with an electric sprint and when he touched down in the last minutes to the game, he brought back the painful memory of Zimbabwe’s 22-19 loss to Russia at the Sevens World Series final core status qualifier last March a.

Cheetahs were leading with just seconds left but late try by Russian Vladimir Ostroushko saw them miss out the core status team for the 2015/16 season. The try also brought the Africa Cup trophy which Kenya lost to South Africa Academy last year and also ended Zimbabwe’s unbeaten run in the championship. Kenya had beaten Tunisia 42-12 in the semis with Zimbabwe knocking out Morocco 26-0. Kenya joined south Africa as the other African team in the game that also have Argentina, USA, France, Fiji, Japan and Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain and hosts Brazil.

Solidarity as volleyball players visit ailing colleague, Jepng’etich

Kenya Prisons and Kenya Pipeline women’s volleyball clubs put aside their rivalry and united to give moral support to the ailing Kenya Pipeline and National team player Ruth Jepng’etich. With the current preparations for next week’s national plays-off in Mombasa, their domestic rivalry came second when they visited the Kenya Pipeline centre blocker who is recuperating at the Nairobi Hospital. Jepng’etich complained of some minor pain in Japan where she was with the national team at the World Cup in August and her situation deteriorated

when she came back. Over the weekend, some Prisons players led by assistant coach Josp Baraza, who also deputises Japheth Munala at the national team spent the better part of the day by the side of Jeng’etich, who has a problem with her central nervous system. The Prisons unit included Lydia Maiyo, who was together with Jepng’etich in Japan, Judith Tarus, Florence Moraa, Sally Wanjala, Joan Chelagata and Sara Jepchumba. The player who spoke to X-Sport, exuded confidence of bouncing back in the coat, adding that her condition has

greatly improve and she expect to be discharged soon. “I started feeling some pain while in Japan and the situation got worse when we arrived. But now I am feeling better,” she said. Jepng’etich was part of the Kenyan team that won the country’s first international trophy in Australia during the world Grand Prix, Group Three. She also steered Kenya to reclaim the ninth African Nations Champions besides helping Kenya pipeline win the national league last year.
