World put on alert as terror rattles Europe
T
he world has been put on alert following Friday’s terror attack in Paris amid fears that militants are keen to spread their killing spree across the globe. European countries have particularly remained on alert since the barbaric act of last week which left 129 people killed. World leaders including US President Barack Obama, Russia’s Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel
have urged their forces to ramp up security checks saying the “world is at war.” At a G20 summit in Turkey this week, the world leaders promised tighter co-operation in the wake of the attacks. Obama said the US and France had made a new agreement on intelligence sharing while Putin yesterday ordered Russia’s armed forces to co-ordinate with the French military as
“allies” on a joint action plan in Syria, signalling a growing rapprochement after the terror attacks on Paris and downing of a Russian airliner. French President Francois Hollande said he would travel to meet US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin in the coming days to discuss action aimed at “destroying the so-called Islamic State” which have claimed responsibility for the attack. Patriotic Harambee Stars go down fighting in Cape Verde
Harambee Stars players pose for a group photo before their World Cup pre-qualifying match against Cape Verde at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi last Friday. Stars were bundled out of the competition after going down 2-0 in Praia last night.

Patriotic Harambee Stars bowed out of contention for a place in the 2018 Fifa World Cup after going down 2-0 to Cape Verde in the second leg of their preliminary qualifying match in Praia last night. Heldon Ramos struck twice within seven minutes for the tiny African nation to cancel out Kenya’s prior advantage to the match and ensure the Atlantic Ocean islanders sail through to the group stages on a 2-1 aggregate. But the players will be excused for the defeat in a match which could have gone either way had had the squad been managed better. The Stars were scheduled to fly out to Praia, the capital of Cape Verde on Monday morning, but delayed following insistence by Skyward Express, the firm that had been contracted to fly the players that it be paid in full before take- off. The players had to wait and could only depart from Wilson Airport at 10pm Monday, some 24 hours to the crucial tie, with the flight scheduled to take close to 20 hours. There are no direct flights between Nairobi and Praia and the chartered plane had to make a stop-over in Kano, Southern Nigeria to refuel before proceeding to Cape Verde, a distance of 6, 870 kilometers. Their arrival four hours to the game meant they did not get time to relax and prepare for the tie. See Story on Back Page

Jubilee accuses ICC of double-speak Jubilee Alliance MPs have dismissed a letter by International Criminal Court officials against discussing Rule 68, saying it’s an attempt to interfere with Kenya’s right to fight injustice. House Majority Leader Aden Duale said Kenya will not stand for “this kind of behavior” which he said is aimed advancing vested interests at the expense of the country. “Their notion that the belligerence will subdue Kenya and its allies into silence is unfortunate and a gross violation of the basic values of the Rome Statute and fundamental principles of international law,” he said in a statement titled: ‘ICC must stop playing games with the Kenya case.’ “This raises fundamental questions on the general independence and integrity of the court; on whose behalf, at whose behest, on whose motion and for what benefit is the court issuing this bizarre advice to ASP?” ICC President Silvia Fernandez de Gurmendi, ICC Registrar, Herman Von Hebel and Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda on Monday wrote to the Assembly of States Parties (ASP) meeting warning it against interfering with the running of the court in any way. In a joint statement to ASP President Sidiki Kaba, the three warned that separation of powers of the Rome Statute system requires the ASP to refrain from any action that interferes with the judicial independence, or

creates a perception of interference. “The independence of the court in the conduct of its judicial and prosecutorial functions is a fundamental tenet of the Rome Statute framework. It is respectfully submitted that in accordance with the role of the assembly within the constitutional framework and separation of powers of the Rome Statute system, the assembly must refrain from any action that interferes with the ICC’s independence in this respect or gives the perception,” they
stated. The trio said the appropriate forum to discuss and contest judicial matters is in the judicial proceedings before the court. The three said the court was concerned that a number of issues have been proposed for discussion in the upcoming session which relate to matters clearly within the judicial and prosecutorial competence of the court. In the letter, they said that some of the matters up for discussion are
under active consideration before the ICC chambers, hence sub-judice. They urged Kaba to ensure that the court’s judicial and independence is “not undermined, or perceived to be undermined by the proceedings of the assembly.” More than 100 Jubilee MPs will be in The Hague this week for the Assembly of States Parties (ASP) meeting that starts today. Kenya wants the 14th Session of the ASP to discuss the use of recanted witness statements following
amendments to Rule 68. “We have said it before and we say now that the court violated basic tenets of international law and its own statute by orchestrating the introduction of rules midway through a trial and then go ahead to enforce them retrospectively. The ASP must condemn this outrageous double speak and duplicity by the court; it cannot allow international justice to sink this low,” Duale said in the statement. He said they will renew their push to withdraw Kenya for the Rome Statute. “This is another clear reason why Kenya should withdraw from the Rome Statute and not subject its citizens to political Kangaroo courts,” Duale stated. Their remarks came amid good news for the Kenyan delegation after the country managed to secure all its agenda items for discussion during the 14th Assembly of States Parties. Kenya managed to push through its proposals at preparatory meetings ahead of the opening of the ASP meeting, and it is expected that the contentious Rule 68 will kick off debate. GDC boss, 8 others spend night in Government in bid to cell as they protest Sh8 million bail review internet policy Geothermal Development Company (GDC) Managing Director Silas Simiyu and eight others spent Tuesday night in police cell after they failed to raise cash bails of between Sh5 million and Sh8 million set by the court. Simiyu’s lawyer Kioko Kilukumi protested the Sh8 million cash bail set for his release, saying it was “prohibitive and tantamount to denying his client his constitutional right to freedom.” Chief Magistrate Kennedy Bidali set Simiyu’s cash bail and that of interdicted Company Secretary Praxidis Saisi at Sh8 million. The magistrate imposed a Sh5 million cash bail for seven of their co-accused who were on the GDC tender committee in 2012. They have all denied charges of willfully failing to comply with procurement laws in the awarding of a Sh1.7 billion tender for Rig Move services. The eight were charged with failing to comply with procurement rules. Nicholas Weke, Abarham Saat, Peter Omenda, Godwin Mwawongo, Caleb Mbaya, Bruno Linyiru and Saisi having

Simiyu was also charged with abuse of office and as accounting officer, for contravening the Public Finance Management Act “by failing to ensure that the resources of the company were used efficiently and economically.” He had applied to have Simiyu released on a cash bail of Sh100,000
which would have been equal to the amount paid by the accused in a police bond on Monday. The defence teams argued that by setting such “unprecedented” terms, the court was in essence delivering judgment in a case that was yet to be heard by punishing their clients. Chief Magistrate Kennedy Bidali was however adamant that the amounts set are in line with Judiciary bail and bond guidelines. He advised the aggrieved parties to make an appeal in the higher courts or renew their application at a later date. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke
Information Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has said the government will in two weeks time review internet policy on child online protection. He said they have realised more children are being lured into dangerous activities and it’s the obligation of the government to protect them. “We will review the internet policy with the sole mandate of protecting more children from being lured into harmful activities through the use of technology,” he said. The CS said the review will provide children and the youth useful skills to practice safe internet use and minimise the exposure to risks and vulnerabilities. In Kenya, 86 per cent of the population use mobile while 72 per cent have access to the internet. Matiang’i said they will work together with the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) on how best to protect children while they are using the internet. “The reality is more children are able to access the internet and we don’t know exactly what they are doing
while there, it’s only important that we protect our generation,” he said. A similar campaign aimed at protecting children while using the internet was launched by CA in August. The purpose of the campaign by CA dubbed ‘Be the cop’ was to provide consumers, especially children and youth, with information and skills to practice safe internet use and minimise exposure to risks. The establishment of the Kenya Computer Incidence Response Team Coordination Centre has far enabled the Communications Authority of Kenya to resolve cybercrime and to respond to criminal incidences experienced online and at the same time handle children’s complaints relating to cybercrime. The campaign was developed in partnership with Child line Kenya, the Department of Children Services, Google, Kenya Association of Professional Counsellors, Kenya Film Classification Board, Kenya Girl Guides Association, Kenya Scouts Association, Plan International, and mobile operators Airtel, Orange and Safaricom.

Eacc on the spot over corruption Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has been challenged to play their role in curbing the runaway corruption in the country. State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu said it is sad when President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto keep talking about corruption while EACC tasked with the mandate, is not playing its role. Esipisu said the anti-graft body should say if they are incapacitated so that they can be accorded the necessary assistance. “Institutions must be capacitated to deliver on their mandate, if they can’t, let them declare so that they can be assisted by the government,” said Esipisu this morning. Last week, 11 diplomats held a meeting with the EACC and warned State and public officers who have either been questioned or adversely mentioned in corruption that they risk being barred from travelling to Europe and the United States. “It just is wrong for the Head of State and the Deputy President to keep talking about corruption… it then means our institutions have failed, if that’s the case they need to declare so that they can be assisted,” said Esipisu.

Union calls for end to UoN varsity leadership wrangles University Academic Staff Union (Uasu) Nairobi chapter has challenged the University of Nairobi (UoN) council to address leadership wrangles pitting Vice Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi (pictured) and his deputy Prof Bernard Njoroge. Speaking yesterday at a Nairobi hotel, the union officials demanded an immediate end of the war of words between Mbithi and Njoroge, saying if not contained, the wrangles will tarnish the institution’s image. “The institution ranks highly therefore the continued wrangles between the top managers will damage its integrity,” cautioned Uasu
chairman Dr Samuel Nyademo. He accused the two dons of politicising serious academic staff matters, following reports that hundreds of staff members had attained the retired age, but were still in office. “As a union, we want to tell the university’s top leadership not to drag staff members into their difference. The list that was released indicating names of our members purported to have attained their retirement age is malicious. They are serving on legal contracts which is a normal practice world over,” he said. Uasu secretary General George Omondi appealed to the two leaders to engage in constructive dialogue and obey a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) they both signed in an attempt to resolve the leadership crisis that threatens to stall the university’s operations. The union also claimed the two are fighting to control the expenditure of the hefty budgetary allocation given to the university. A strained working relationship has been witnessed between Mbithi and his deputy, who is in charge of Administration and Finance since they assumed their respective offices. The University Council is mandated by its statutes to resolve any outstanding mattes that may create rift among members of staff in the university and the current wrangle is already creating anxiety among institution’s staff. Education Cabinet Secretary Prof Jacob Kaimenyi has in the recent past directed UoN management to implement review findings of a task force instituted to look into human resource and expenditure issues which is said to have contributed to the feud.
for attempting to obstruct a report about a conspiracy to steal Sh695.4 million from NYS. But yesterday, Raila termed the move an attempt to cover up for the real beneficiaries of the fraud. “I believe Mangiti and Githinji are not alone in whatever they are accused of doing. They are just but the apostles of the High Priestess of corruption in Kenya, whom for some mysterious reason the Jubilee regime is determined to protect at all costs,” he said. But the DPP has rubbished the claims, saying his office makes decisions based on evidence and the law. “Allegations of compromise and other ulterior considerations by my office in the execution of my public duty are completely baseless and unwarranted,” a statement released by the DPP’s office today read. “The office of the DPP make decisions based on the evidence and the law. That is what we have done,” he added. Tobiko regretted that politicians have continuously
politicised the Sh695 million NYS scandal even after it became a legal process. He said his office will not be drawn into any political contests of the selfish politicians. “Politicians should not drag our legal processes into parochial political theatrics that only serve to defeat justice,” said Tobiko. Raila claimed the charging of PS Mangiti and Githinji was meant to cover up some individuals in government. The former premier who is currently in London said there are various attempts to ensure those who bear the greatest responsibility for the loss of taxpayers’ money at NYS are not brought to account for their criminal actions. “Those attempts having failed, and with revelations pointing in the direction of real culprits, it has become necessary for “fall guys” to be quickly identified and taken down to save the actual thieves,” he added.

World put on red alert as terror raids rattle Europe Sh884m to boost math in primary schools The World Bank has pledged to donate Sh884 million ($88.4) to finance early mathematics learning in primary schools in a bid to strengthen the numeracy skills among Kenyan learners. According to the Ministry of Education, the initiative will put more emphasizes on the proficiency skills at the initial stage of the children’s formal education and strengthen management systems at schools and national levels. Speaking yesterday during a curriculum sensitisation programme at Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang (pictured above) said the funds will support the ministry in increasing access and ensure provision of quality education. “The dynamism in the society demands that education takes a paradigm shift to not only focusing on social-demand in education provision but also laying emphasis on learning outcomes and developing competencies” said Kipsang in a speech read by Education Director General, Leah Rotich. The PS said the ministry has embarked on curriculum reform that will propel the development of a structure to determine the key competences that learners must develop at any educational level and the basis for assessment. “Education is the most important asset for strengthening market competitiveness, and the accelerator of the total economic growth and development of the country,” he said. Kipsang said the project is set to address areas that not yet fully covered by other initiatives so as to ensure provision of quality education to all Kenyan children. “Teaching should not be for exams passing purposes only but for acquisition of knowledge and a great future for our current generation. Teachers should be trained before being considered a teacher”, he concluded.

The militants have allies across the globe with Boko Haram in Nigeria and factions in Libya and Egypt pledging their allegiance to the caliphate based in Syria and Iraq. Then there are the AlQaeda and al-Shabaab militants who are also carrying out similar attacks against innocent civilians. And to justify the concerns from the world leaders, about 30 people have reportedly been killed in the Nigerian city of Yola following blasts that rocked a busy market area where traders were closing up for the day. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari visited Yola on Saturday, declaring that the Islamist militant movement Boko Haram was close to defeat, just days before the tragedy. In Kenya, an al-Shabaab suspect
was shot and injured yesterday in a gun battle in Garissa as he tried to storm a Kenya Defence Forces camp in the area. Security has since been beefed up across the country with Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet calling for vigilance among the public. In the US, security threats grounded two Air France flights. The planes, en route from the US to Paris, were diverted after anonymous bomb threats were made and passengers evacuated in the US and Canada. In Europe, a soccer match was cancelled in the Germany city of Hannover following several security tip-offs. No explosives have been discovered yet. The cancellation of the match came barely 24 hours after another friendly match between Belgium and Spain was called off in Brussels
over similar fears. In England, a friendly match between the hosts and France went on albeit under tight security as fears continue to grip the continent. In France, security operation continued today with heavy gunfire reported in the northern Paris suburb of Saint Denis in an operation linked to last Friday’s attacks. Paris police said gunfire had been exchanged and some officers had been wounded. Unconfirmed reports said Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the alleged mastermind of the attacks, is the focus of the operation. US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Paris on Monday evening to show support for “America’s oldest friend” against what he called “psychopathic monsters”.

‘Three jihadists’ killed as police raid Paris suburb Three terrorist suspects have been killed in the Paris suburb of SaintDenis during a major security operation linked to the deadly attacks that rocked the French capital five days ago, a police source said. The targets of the raid are believed to have included the purported mastermind of the attacks. A number of suspects had been holed up in a building amid a major police operation in the area, officials said as the hunt continues for people believed to be involved in the deadly terrorist last week. The target of the operation is the suspected mastermind of the Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the
news agency Agence France-Presse reported, citing a police source. The agency added it’s not clear whether the Belgian ISIS member is one of the people cornered inside the building. A series of explosions were heard in the area, but it was not immediately clear whether the blasts were controlled explosions carried out by authorities. An unspecified number of suspects have been cornered in a building in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis, Mayor Didier Paillard said in an interview on French television early today. Police and soldiers have cordoned off the zone and all public transportation in the area has been
halted. Residents have been warned to stay inside. Witnesses have reported gunfire amid a police raid in the suburb as authorities hunt for two suspects from Friday’s deadly terrorist attacks who are believed to be at large. Police blocked off roads early today in Saint-Denis, which is home to the Stade de France Sports Stadium where three suicide bombings took place on Friday. CNN affiliate BFMTV reported that police officers have been wounded by gunfire during a raid seeking one of the suspects in the wave of violence across Paris, which killed at least 129 people and wounded hundreds more. French police
wouldn’t comment on whether any officers had been shot in the SaintDenis operation. BFMTV reported that the police raid was linked to the hunt for the so-called “ninth suspect,” who may appear in a video recorded by a witness to the attacks. Police have been analysing the video, which shows two gunmen inside a black car linked to the attacks and perhaps a third individual driving the car, French media reported. Seven of the attackers were killed during the wave of violence on Friday night, and an international arrest warrant is already out for one suspect, Salah Abdesalam, a 26-year-old Frenchman.

KQ ignites turn-around plan to fly carrier to profit margin Kenya Airways (KQ) today kicked off its turn-around strategy aimed at driving up the carrier’s profits following a Sh11.9 billion loss for the half-year ending September 2015. The move comes just days after KQ Chief Executive Officer Mbuvi Ngunze was elected the executive committee chairman of the Annual General Assembly of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA), the trade association for airlines from the African Union. Kenya’s flagship carrier said the strategy to return the airline to profitability will be executed starting Wednesday. KQ Group Finance Director Alex Mbugua said the strategy, which was developed by American multinational management consulting firm McKinsey, would put an end to the loss-making that the airline has been grappling with in recent months. Mbugua was speaking during an appearance before a Senate select committee probing into the affairs of the national carrier. The turnaround strategy, dubbed Winning in Africa has a 24-point plan expected to eventually lead the airline to success. “We have a new plan which will be implemented in the next 18 months. It is a plan we hope will bring a
turnaround in the company,” said Mbugua. He added that the roadmap had already been approved by the board and the government. The influx of different providers and low-cost carriers has narrowed KQ’s market share but Mbugua is confident that their still-undisclosed strategy will lift the carrier’s prospects. He said the airline owed its suppliers
billions in debt, saying KQ was already making plans to offset its arrears. As part of the airline’s bid to manage debt, the carrier is seeking to have the payment of the current shortterm loan of $250 million (Sh25.5 billion) given by local banks increased to seven years to enable them raise more cash. “We are also engaging government
for long-term financing and are looking to raise a significant amount through shares or additional debt so as to first settle the suppliers who have been patient with us,” added Mbugua. It has been stated that McKinsey may offer new strategies at making the company cost effective, while eliminating older policies that the consultancy firm has deemed inefficient.
The turn-around strategy, dubbed ‘Winning in Africa’ has a 24-point plan expected to eventually lead the airline to success following a streak of losses with the latest being a Sh11.9 billion loss for the half-year ending September 2015.

Road Safety concerns as projects stall The main topic for discussion at the 2nd Global Ministerial Conference on Road safety this week will be how to accelerate progress towards improving road safety and save millions of lives by 2020. This year marks a milestone for the road safety agenda with the inclusion of specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets for road safety, including cutting by half the global number of road traffic fatalities by the end of this decade. The latest Global Status Report on Road Safety estimates that road deaths have leveled off since 2007. But they remain unacceptably high, at 1.25 million deaths and 50 million injuries a year. This is more deaths than from malaria or tuberculosis; and if trends continue, the number of traffic-related deaths could surpass those from HIV-Aids by 2020. Road injuries are also the leading cause of death among those aged 15 to 29. Deaths and injuries in lowand middle-income countries are estimated to reduce GDP by 3 to 5 per cent, often affecting the poorest. Since 2010, low-income countries have had higher road-related death rates than middle-income countries. Africa, for example, remains the region with the highest death rates as of 2013, with death rates one and a half times the global average of 16 per 100,000 population.

In an analysis of local lenders across the country, the CBK has identified three main types of business models that banks use to disburse their loans; the
corporate-oriented business model (CBM), the supply chain oriented business model (SBM) and the microenterprise-oriented business model (MBM). “These business models reflect the lending technology utilised and the approach to customer acquisition,” the bank said in a recently-released statement. The CBK research found that banks target the market segments they are most effectively able to service, reflecting their strategic orientation
and limitations imposed by their approach to risk management. It was discovered that risk management strategies vary widely across banks and may be based on ‘hard’ information, ‘soft’ information, or a combination of the two. Hard information consists of financial ratios calculated from certified audited statements and credit scores assembled from data on payment and cash-flow histories of SMEs and their owners, as well as
data assembled by credit bureaus. Soft information consists of nonfinancial information about the ability and willingness of firms and entrepreneurs to live up to their obligations to their creditors, such as the sources of their revenues and their historical relationship and track record with the bank. In addition banks rely to varying degrees on collateral or security as provided, for instance, by invoices of their clients. According to the Central Bank,
lenders like Barclays, CFC Stanbic and Standard Chartered Bank have corporate-oriented business models, meaning that when it comes to disbursing loans, they target medium-sized enterprises. They also rely on hard information before they can consider providing a business with credit. BoA, Chase, DTB, Ecobank, FINA, I&M, NIC have been cited as lenders that follow a supply-chain oriented model when it comes to lending money to borrowers.

Central Bank moves to stop issuance of permits to banks The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has said it will not license any new commercial banks until further notice. The move comes after two banks were placed under liquidation although CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge says the move does not, however, apply to resolutions, amalgamation and acquisitions. Speaking when he appeared before the senate Finance committee, Njoroge said they had learnt painful lessons from the case of Dubai Bank and Imperial Bank and it was time to address the problems. “We have been in touch with all the CEOs of commercial banks to ensure banks are working well. We have been monitoring the conditions on a day-to-day basis and bank-to-bank,” he said. Njoroge had earlier said CBK will conduct a thorough audit of all banks to ensure correct information is given to the public. He said they will interrogate data across all banks to obtain actual status an initiative that would to avoid cases where institutions cook up results and give out false information However, he ascertained liquidity
as the shocks that hit and affect the market had declined. He said they had encouraged banks to recycle liquidity adding that only four banks had high amounts. “We need to go deeper in interrogating the loan-by-loan data in the system and not just the reports that indicate the total loans,” he said. Currently, there are 44 licenced
commercial banks and mortgage finance companies across the country out of which 31 are locally owned and 13 foreign. According to Senior Portfolio Manager Pan Africa Assets Management Kevin Kiprono, in order to manage the liquidity crunch and reduce rates, the Treasury was actively purchasing securities from banks with an undertaking of selling them back
later. “There has been a liquidity crunch especially for the small banks as depositors shift their funds to the large tier 1 banks, hence Central Bank of Kenya providing the liquidity,” he said. Njoroge assured that CBK will continue to apply the instruments at its disposal to maintain overall price and financial sector stability.

BIZ BRIEFS BMW injects Sh43b to manufacture X3 model in South Africa BMW Group has announced it will invest R6 billion (Sh43 billion) at its Rosslyn Plant in Pretoria, South Africa where the German carmaker will manufacture its new X3 model for export and local sale. The investment is one of the biggest in the local automotive industry. The production of the next generation BMW X3 will replace the BMW 3 Series Sedan, which will now be allocated to other plants within the global BMW production network. Mr Tim Abbott, Managing Director of BMW Group South Africa said the potential for Africa as a future market for exports, as well as the newly reviewed Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP), enables South Africa to play a significant role in the manufacturing industry and production of high quality cars. BMW will invest millions in new state-of-theart facilities and operations of the plant.

Farmers rake in Sh 12,000 daily from cassava cakes A youth farming group in Vihiga County has embarked on a novel cassava value addition innitiative, a project that has seen locals create a vibrant local economic cycle earning over Sh 12,000 daily. Through baking cassava cakes, Wakonye group has enticed the youth to venture into the production of the crop as well as increasing its consumption, a move that has uplifted their social and economic livelihood. The initiative has also seen farmers triple their returns earning Sh 1,350 higher had they

sold the product when still raw. Group’s chairperson Albert Savala says low revenue returns motivated them to venture into the value addition. “I got the idea of value addition from an agricultural workshop organised by Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology in early 2013 and shared it with my fellow farmers in the village and after deliberations, we came up with the cassava cake idea,’’ he says.. Armed with an idea and some cassavas as raw material but with no baking skills and equipment,
the group enrolled two members for baking classes at a local bakery and applied for a Sh50,000 loan at the Youth Enterprise and Development Fund. Savala says their target market are school-going children that provide ready selling one cake at Sh20. Other than creation of employment, the group also offers ready market for raw cassava, sourcing it from farmers across the county and neighbouring counties at a better price. “On a nice day, we make up to
Sh12, 800 which caters for our daily wages of Sh400 each, raw materials and group savings,’’ says Savala. However, the group still aims at bettering its output by investing in a modern bakery before the year ends. “As part of the move to maximum our income, we have managed to buy five motorbikes, two for the cake distribution and three for hire, though we plan to purchase our modern bakery equipment by the end of this year,’’ Savala concludes.
PR teams urged to boost Kenya’s positive image Local and international Public Relations experts have been urged to help change the negative perceptions peddled about Kenya so as to position the country as an investment destination and a land of opportunities. Speaking during the opening ceremony of the World Conference on Public Relations on Emerging Economies (WCPREE) at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, Information Communications and Technology Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’I said emerging economies such as Kenya bear the brunt of negative publicity where they are painted as being insecure and prone to terrorism, tribalism and other negative connotations. He said the negative
publicity about emerging economies occurs because communicators have not taken the lead in sharing positive experiences in their respective regions with the rest of the world. “This conference is an opportunity for emerging economies to come up with viable communication strategies on how to change wrong narratives and attract investment. Like many countries, Kenya continues to deal with terrorism which unfortunately has impacted negatively on our tourism sector,” he said. The CS urged communication professionals to help paint a picture different from those depicting Kenya as a “hotbed of terrorism” and other bad descriptions and in the contrary help position the country as a hotbed of peace
and development. The WCPREE conference has brought together hundreds of renowned communications experts in Nairobi led by Lord Peter Selwyn Chadlington, (UK) Paul Holmes (of the Holmes Report), and Mr Gerald Mullally from the Cabinet Office of the United Kingdom among others. “We expect the conference to set a new direction in the way governments and private sector institutions will communicate in the future so as to change the wrong narratives that existed in the past,” said Matiang’i. The conference is hosted by the Public Relations Society of Kenya in conjunction with the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management.
The Nairobi Garage, a co-working space and hub for tech incubators has announced plans for a new branch opening in Westlands. The expansion will make the Garage Africa’s largest co-working space when it opens its doors on December 1. The management had noticed an overwhelming demand for people wanting to become a part of Nairobi Garage community and had been forced to turn number of companies, since its hosting space was limited. This prompted the idea of creating a 2nd co-working space in Nairobi. The new Garage will offer Nairobi-based businesses an additional 400 desks, plus a number of team rooms, meeting rooms and an event space. The group expects to host around 70 companies, bringing their Nairobi Garage family to 100 startups, SME’s and ecosystem players. The branch will be located at ‘the Mirage’, a brand new commercial building on Waiyaki Way.
CBK benchmark lending rate to remain at 11.5 pc
The Central Bank of Kenya will hold its benchmark lending rate at 11.50 per cent, the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) said on Tuesday. The Bank also said the exchange rate had stabilised and the current account deficit had narrowed, allowing the rate to remain steady. The index serves as a guideline for lenders and financial institutions to set their own rates. The CBK has been seeking ways to keep the rate stable as bank lending rates had reached unprecedented highs just weeks ago. Borrowers had been facing interst rates on loans that were in the mid20s. The CBK has since raised the lending rate by 300 basis points earlier this year in part to support the weakening shilling. Since the MPC meeting of September 2015, turbulent conditions emerged in the financial markets.

Equity Bank eyes 10 million DRC customers Equity Group Holdings Limited is targeting 10 million customers in Democratic Republic of Congo by 2025. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), an estimated 4 per cent of the adults among Congo’s population of over 75 million have Equity bank accounts. Equity Group CEO James Mwangi said, Equity completed the Sh 3.5 billion ($35 million) purchase of a 79 per cent stake in Procredit in September and plans to invest the same amount to expand business and win customers as well as provide retail banking services to its consumers. “Procredit Bank Congo SA should benefit from the local government’s efforts to spread financial services in Africa’s fourth-most populous nation and biggest copper producer,’’ Dr Mwangi said. He added: “DRC can easily become the most profitable subsidiary of Equity group because of low cost of delivery.’’ He said the use of agency banking and mobile platforms can cut the cost-to-income ratio at Procredit to 45 per cent from 85 per cent over the next 10 years.
Appetite for chives sees Kenya venture into oversees market The demand for chives, herbs that belong to the onion family, has been on a meteoric rise in parts of the globe, including Europe, averaging between two and four per cent each year. Its popularity has made it the favourite crop across an entire basket of herbs that include coriander, basil and parsel among others. UAE countries have also expressed growing interest in Kenyan chives, prompting local growers to take note. More than 80 farmers from Bahati constituency, Nakuru County are reaping the benefits of farming chives, with the export market expressing an insatiable appetite for their produce, which earns them up to Sh600 a kilogramme.
The farmers, who traditionally farmed maize and beans, have now become net exporters after vegetable seed company Premier Seeds Limited introduced them to chives farming. The global market for culinary herbs and spices has been on an upward trajectory and is currently valued at approximately $2.3 billion (Sh235 billion) with chives being among the frontrunners, according to the International Trade Centre with the EU forming the bulk of this market. In 2013 the EU imported some 533,000 tonnes of spices and herbs valued at € 1.9 billion (Sh208 billion) with imports from developing countries like Kenya accounting for 302,000 tonnes
worth € 1 billion (Sh109 billion). Through a group model, farmers have been able to own greenhouses on credit through a partnership between Premier Seeds and Chase Bank that allows farmers to repay the loan from the proceeds of chives at favourable repayment terms that are agreed upon between the financier and individual farmers. Farmers make a 10 per cent deposit before the construction of the greenhouses as commitment to the project. Premier Seeds works with the farmers through supply of the certified chives seeds, training the farmers on good agricultural practices, building their greenhouses and linking them to ready markets.
Customer base drives Chase Bank profit up Chase Bank Kenya has posted a 29 per cent pre-tax profit representing Sh3.2 billion during the period ended September 30, 2015. The huge profit was driven by enormous enrolment that saw customer numbers growing by 37 per cent to over half a million. The bank’s core capital base also increased by Sh3.6 billion recording a 41 per cent hike following a rights issue by the bank. Chase Bank Kenya Chief Executive Paul Njaga attributed the impressive growth on the bank’s focus on SMEs, youth and women as well as its innovative financial solutions developed to drive business. “Chase Bank is constantly looking for ways to enable businesses and individuals achieve what matters most to them. This year, we have strengthened partnerships with various players so as to offer more value to our customers.’’ Njaga said there are plans to continuously innovate to meet the evolving needs of their customers. The leading SME lender committed to lend Sh60 billion to SMEs over 3 years during the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. Already, Sh20 billion has been advanced to its SME’s customers mainly through competitive pricing. The bank has established several strategic partnerships over the past few months.
The chives that are now enjoying fanatical uptake among the farmers takes 45 days to mature after which farmers harvest after every 20-25 days for up to three years
“Most of the farmers have not practiced greenhouse farming before and are growing a crop that requires observance of good agricultural practices and traceability. We have, therefore, had to do thorough training on every aspect of farming to ensure that the farmers’ produce are compliant with the export market,” said Mr. Simon Andys the founder of Premier Seeds. Such practices include having a tracking sheet at the entrance of each greenhouse that allows farmers to record the timing of key activities in the greenhouse including the time of spraying and irrigation. This is in keeping with the export requirements of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). The chives that are now enjoying fanatical uptake among the farmers takes 45 days to mature after which farmers harvest after every 20-25 days for up to three years. An ordinary greenhouse measuring 240meters squared produces up to 150 kilos with a kilo going for an average of Sh662. The perennial crop is easy to grow and is rarely attacked by pests and diseases which has endeared it further to the farmers. “Demand has outstripped supply. We have received so many delivery orders from the export market that we have been forced to cancel some because we cannot keep up. That is how huge the export market for chives is,” said Mr. Andys. The group model of growing chives has been strategic in allaying fears of exporters who worry about consistency in supply from individual farmers. “Once farmers harvest their individual produce we weigh and record them and. We then export in bulk to meet the heavy orders and assure the buyers of consistent supply. Payments are however credited to individual farmers’ accounts,” Andys added.
Nigeria reeling under biggest pump fuel shortage amid row, importers blamed A severe fuel crisis has hit Nigeria with long queues of angry motorists waiting for hours outside petrol stations in major cities to fill up. Importers are being blamed for withholding petrol because there is a payment disagreement with the government though they have denied the accusations. This has been described as the biggest shortage in Nigeria since
President Muhammadu Buhari took over in May, BBC reports. Nigeria is the leading Africa’s oil exporter but imports most of its petrol because it lacks the capacity to refine it. The fuel is imported at a subsidised price under a scheme operated by the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Earlier this month, the Nigerian government had approved the
payment of $2.1billion to the wholesale fuel sellers to settle subsidy claims though the payment has been delayed since parliament has not yet approved it. Buhari took office partly on a pledge to curb corruption in the oil sector but one motorist within the main northern city confirms that he has been on the queue for about 8 hours yet only people with connections are being allowed to
buy the fuel. The wholesalers habitually pretend to bring in a lot more oil than they do and pocket the money they get for the petrol that is not delivered, he says. In May, the country was brought to a standstill when the importers went on strike following a row over payments with the outgoing government of President Goodluck Jonathan.

it’S time to get intimate with omena
Omena is also called Dried Sardines. A flamboyant name given all manner of jokes making rounds about the small fish. It is not unusual to be told not to drink water after eating Omena, lest they start swimming in your stomach! The Smart Fish Programme, through their “Eat fish for a better life,” seeks to have you eat at least one serving of fish per week and more would be better! Fish is highly rich in protein needed for normal growth
and development for children. Further, it is a rich source of vitamins and minerals (B12, Vitamin D, Iodine and Zinc). In addition, Fish is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids essential for brain development in young children and excellent for expectant mothers. The Smart Fish Programme which is hosting its second leg of Eat Fish For a Better Life Campaign notes that local fish eating habits have not been properly integrated in local population. According to Smart Fish
outreach consultant Florence Wallemacq, “only 3.7 kilos per year of fish are eaten yearly on the national pro capita consumption rate compared to 16.3 kilos globally.” The lowest consumption rates In Kenya are in Central with the highest in main fishery areas notably Western Kenya. The highest consumed form of fish is Tilapia and it’s always advised not to overcook your fish so as to keep the nutrients intact.

Waist trainers also known as corsets have become a common way to achieve a skinny waist. There are basically so many women shopping in stores and online for this “waist solution” because they are too lazy to exercise in order to achieve their body goals. Corseting is one of the most well-known historical attempts at changing a woman’s shape. Well research just showed how much wearing corsets can damage one’s internal organs. It leaves lasting effects on the woman’s skeleton deforming her ribs and misaligning the spine such that her liver and stomach are forced downward. It is therefore important that you perform the right exercises to get a lean and toned waist. Do plenty of cardio like running, skipping, cycling for at least 30 minutes a day four times a week. Practice sucking in your stomach, try to do it throughout the day, wherever you are as it helps to work your stomach muscles. Do twist crunches, lie on your back and ben your knees up while keeping your feet flat on the floor. Touch your ears then slowly contract your abdomen muscles lifting your torso off the ground. Do sit ups ,lie on the ground facing up, your hands behind your head then slowly lifting your upper body then back simultaneously.
s the world shifts efforts and structures towards going green, more creativity is being demonstrated across all innovative fields, home construction being one of them. Going green initiatives in real estate started off with solar panels on roof tops which provide alternative energy in households rather than using fossil fuel and geothermal power. The latest environmental friendly breakthrough in homes is on windows. It is actually ironic how windows are meant to bring in natural solar lighting into homes, yet we had not initially thought of using these same windows to tap
into the very same solar energy! Solar windows are basically solar panels, only lighter and transparent and their biggest advantage is that unlike roof solar panels which involve a lot of technicality in installing and access, window solar panels only require normal window fitting, a bit of wiring and owners can easily access them for maintenance. Apart from tapping solar energy, these windows can be further modified into insulated solar panel windows, with the insulation helping to absorb any heat trying to escape the interior house environment through the windows and storing this heat as additional energy, which is exceptional especially during cold weather.
Staying with the watermelon….how about a cocktail keg? We have discovered the wonders of a watermelon! A few weeks ago, we showed you how to make a watermelon fruit basket. It turns out the watermelon is open to all imaginable creative possibilities like the watermelon cocktail keg, which only requires a watermelon, a sharp spoon, a marker pen, a lightweight household drill and a tap kit. Analyze your watermelon and decide which side will be best to place the tap system, then use the marker pen to highlight a point near the fruit’s bottom on the
chosen side where the faucet will be installed at a later point. Cut out a small round piece at the top of the fruit which will act as a lid, then through the opening created, scoop out the fruity flesh using the spoon and taking care not to cut through the rind, then turn the fruit upside down to drain the residual juice. Next, use your drill to create a hole the same diameter as the neck of the tap shaft then put the shank through the hole until it is snugly fit so as to prevent leaking. Slide the O ring and tap adapter through
the shank to create a tap similar to that on a tank, check for leakages one more time, pour your cocktail into the fruit tank, close the lid and finally fetch the refreshments from your new watermelon cocktail jar. Because the modified watermelon is still susceptible to elements of nature, the jar should only be used temporarily as it will eventually wither. Due to the watermelon’s oval shape, ensure you place the jar on a hollow surface for extra stability and support.

YOURSAY Handling of Stars Cape Verde trip annoying We all expect our National team to shine not only in the continent, but across the globe. However, if you wish to reap well, you must have invested much in planting, this is not the case in the handling of Kenya national soccer team. The government wants the team to perform, yet it does nothing or very little to get the desired
results. It is saddening for a the national team’s trip to Cape Verde can be delayed for more than 10 hours after posting amazing results last week. To make matters worse, the players had not been paid their allowances running back to their Mauritius match. Is it because most players
in the national team are from Nyanza and Western regions seen as a hub for the Opposition that is leading to the lethargy in handling it?. I would like to call upon the management to dissociate tribalism from soccer and back the national team. —Enock ndayala, Nairobi
FKF boss should be fired to redeem game image It is quite disturbing that the national football team Harambee Stars had to stage a go-slow for their allowances to be paid. It is even worrying that after bookng a chartered plane to transport the squad to Cape Verde for the crucial return leg World Cup qualifier, Kenya Football Federation (FKF) was unwilling to pay
for the flight ahead of the journey. Coupled with other challenges, it seems our football management organs do not take our national team seriously. The team will arrive in Cape Verde exhausted and head straight into the match and these are some of the reason the team is never motivated to win matches. It is
high time FKF president Sam Nyamweya were shown the door and a competent group ushered in to took charge of matters football and restored fans’ faith in the management and the Kenyan football team. I take this opportunity to wish the team all the best in todays’ clash. — Otieno H.D
US, partners must change tact in anti-ISIS war “We work based on an ideology. How can you defeat an ideology or someone who is a believer? The bigger their war against us, against Islam, the true Islam, the stronger our faith and commitment to our Caliphate grows”. These are the sentiments of one of the Islamic States supporter after the airstrikes by the US-led coalition on Syria began. The bombardments have only seen the number of attacks by ISIS militia on the western countries go up. It is saddening the shelling have not
weakened the militia, but rather seen their resolve to attack a common enemy which US and the Western nations. It is high time countries opposed to killing in the name of religion came up with another plan to defeat terrorism. They should think of an ideological plan. The terrorists believe in something that they are ready to die for. A countering believe or ideology would go a long way in countering radicalisation. —Anne
Parents should look after teenage girls on holidays Parents ought to be careful with their children during festive seasons to stem cases of abduction and sexual immorality. Schools are now closed and individuals with ulterior morals are roaming in the villages and estates and lusting idle schoolgirls
who have just completed their KCSE and KCPE examinations. As parents toil to fend for their families in their various working places, they should not forget their parental roles and continually keep tabs on the whereabouts of their
children. Some churches provide various Christian activities to the teens which parents can consider enrolling their children into to keep them busy and enhance their skills as they wait for their results. – Otieno Nyakrathia, South B
Nyamweya’s arrest good news to soccer fans The government should not use Football Kenya Federation president Sam Nyamweya arrest to hoodwink the public of the mishandling of the national soccer team Harambee Stars, but his arrest should be the beginning of proper management in the sports sector. Local soccer
fans have suffered in the hands of selfish leaders with parochial interests mandated to run soccer. Nyamweya has been a stumbling since his election to head FKF, blocking the much-needed reforms in the football circles. The latest incident where the national team trip to Cape verde was
delayed by more than 10 hours was embarrassing. If reports appearing in sections of the media that Nyamweya had the money to pay for the chartered plane, but failed to, justice should fully take its course. — Vicky Kasera, Pangani
Uhuru’s defiance on Waiguru’s sacking wrong The responce by President Uhuru Kenyatta to those calling him to sack Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru is a clear indication that the Head of Head is not ready to listen to alternative voices. Positive criticism backed by logical reasoning is key in improving governance, which in turn leads to development. The President as a symbol of
national unity should listen to all including his opponents and act on constructive criticism that improve governance. The loud calls to sack Devolution CS are backed by logical facts which should not be ignored. Waiguru just like her colleagues should also step aside to pave way for investigations. — Bukende, Embakasi
Paris terror attack, strong warning to all nations The Friday terror attack in Paris that left 129 dead and hundreds injured is a warning to world nations that if not stemmed, terrorism will consume the whole world. Without acting on anger, the West must line up research-based approach to deal with the menace. When it started in Arab countries, some countries thought it was far a way home to be a matter of
concern, but the spread in North Africa mostly Muslim-dominated nations and now attacks even in countries with security capability of US and France calibre is a very strong signal that things have change and the fight must now move from the field to brain. Time is running out and the world must move first to deal with terrorism — Steve Bukende, Embakasi

Holland, Germany friendly called off on security grounds
Germany’s friendly with the Netherlands last night was called off because of an “intention to ignite explosives” at the Hannover Stadium. Evacuation began with 90 minutes to kick-off after a “concrete security threat”, said the city’s president of police Volker Kluwe. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was set to attend the match at the 49,000-capacity HDI Arena where the German national team’s players were put under police protection. Following bomb threat, fans were told to return home “quickly, but without panic”. Germany’s Minister of the Interior Thomas de Maiziere told a news conference: “The match was called off on my recommendation. “There is a high level of threat for Germany and Europe.” Belgium’s friendly with Spain in Brussels, also scheduled to be played on Tuesday, was called off on Monday because of security fears in the wake of last week’s attacks in Paris that left 129 dead.
Thai half marathon runners angry over error in race route unners in Thailand took part in what could R be considered the longest half marathon in the world when an error in the route saw them run six kilometres more than they should have in Bangkok Half-Marathon. The runners, who bombarded race organisers with complaints after running almost 27km instead of the standard 21km. One of the participants, David Nicholson said he was “disgusted” by the error.” According to my GPS watch it was 27.8kms! (17.3 miles),” he wrote on his social media page. On Monday, Songrakm Kraison, vice-president of the Jogging Association of Thailand, said organisers told runners to turn in the wrong place. The association apologises for the mistake,” The same error also occurred in Kenya during the 2013 Kericho Marathon where lead runners had wrong turn only to get to the finish line and find that there are winners claiming the prize money.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Sam Nymweya (centre)with his vice Robert Asembo (left) and FKF CEO Michael Esakwa at a past function. The federation has been given up to December 4 to comply with Sport Act or be dissolved.
Comply with the Act or get dissolved, FKF told Football Kenya Federation (FKF) faces dissolution if it fails to comply with Sport Act 2-13 by December 4. The troubled federation was given two weeks to register with the Sports Registrar or face the wrath of the government. In its yesterday’s ruling, the Sports Dispute Tribunal (SDT) ordered FKF to “make immediate arrangement” to align itself with the Sports Act 2013 which requires all federations and clubs to re-register afresh as per the act. “The respondent (FKF) shall make immediate arrangement to comply with the Tribunal’s ruling to register under the Sports Act as required by the law and such compliance must be undertaken on or before Friday, December 4,” readthe eight-paged ruling delivered by tribunal chairman John Ohaga. FKF officials had gone back to the tribunal seeking extension of the earlier ruling delivered on August 18 which gave them 60
days to register afresh. That date expired on October 18. The cry was granted, but with a further two weeks failure to which the federation will be termed illegal entity by the government. This will put more pressure on the federation whose boss was arrested yesterday following the mishandling of Harambee Stars ahead of their trip to Cape Verde; in addition to the forthcoming national elections. Ohaga said in his ruling that FKF has not exhibited any real intention to comply with the provision of the Sports Act. In a sworn affidavit by suspended FKF vice president Sammy Sholei’s legal team asserting that the matter had been adjudicated by a competent court and should not be pursued further by the same parties (res judicata) was thrown out with Ohaga, saying FKF was not seeking to review the order. “The assertion that the matter has been res judicata is unfounded. It only seek to
enlarge the time to comply, hence not new proceedings on the same facts.” “Indeed the orders made by the tribunal in its judgement in August were made on the acceptance of the respondent’s assurance and submission that it was making good faith effort to comply with the provisions of the Act and prevent the possibility of a lucuna (vacuum), therefore chaos in the management of football in the country” The tribunal having given consideration of the reasons advanced for the request for more time, found no compelling reason advanced by respondents who have clearly not exhibited real intention to comply with the provisions notwithstanding, the relatively simple and straightforward procedure for such compliance set out at section 46(3) and (4) of the Act.” FKF was also ordered to pay the cost of the suit to first and second appellants, Sam Sholei and Julius Iganji.
Boxing showdown in Kisumu to raise funds for ailing lethal pugilist Conje Boxing Association of Kenya (BAK) will hold a boxing show during the Kisumu 110 -Years celebration to raise money for the ailing boxer Conjestina Achieng’. “Conje” is suffering from a mental problem, but the association chairman John Kameta insists her condition is not boxing-related. “If I take you to Mathare hospital today, you’ll find journalists, pilots and doctors who have
never fought a single bout. It is just unfortunate that our heroine had to suffer from the mental. It is not boxing related,” he said. The event will take place in Kisumu on December 5. The association, which was not directly involved with Conje, who was a professional boxer, has challenged sport personalities to save up for future. “Although it must be understood that Conjestina belonged to the other side of boxing
(Professional), she brought a lot of fame to Kenya and other boxers that is why we will be holding the championship specifically to do a boxing show to raise money for her,” he added. “Other Athlete- boxers even rugby player included will not be spared. They have to get their umbrellas for rainy days. They must save part of what they are making today because you never know what happens tomorrow.” Kameta has also warned boxers
of severe consequences if they are found doping. “I’ve tried to talk these youngsters (boxers) on the seriousness of doping. Khat (Miraa) is not good, bhang is even worse, but we have to arrest the situation right now. Whoever will be caught doping, we will impose serous punishment,” He, however slammed the government for lending very little support to fight doping in the country.
Tribunal puts on notice Ingwe warring factions AFC Leopards took their wrangles to the Sports Dispute Tribunal (SDT) literally when rival supporters allied to Mathews Opwora and Dan Mule clashed outside the courtroom yesterday. The ugly scenes, which occurred as the opposing groups of fans were waiting to take the elevator caused fear at the NHIF building, forcing Mule’s Lawyer Silvia Matasi to threaten to withdraw from the case. “I cannot get out of here,” Matasi said. “Those people will beat me up. This is dangerous and I don’t think I should go on with this case,” she added. This came barely five minutes after the warring faction had been advised by SDT to give dialogue a chance. STD chairman John Ohaga appealed to the two groups who are both claiming leadership of the club to agree on how to manage the club. “Please go away and talk to each other and agree. Our business as a tribunal is
to look into the welfare of players. If you cannot agree then we will give direction,” Ohaga told the two lawyers representing Opwora and Mule. “The Sports Act is preparing Kenyan sports for professionalism. This courts business therefore is to clean up sports for corporates to come in and inject money. If that is done then players will have more money and better lives. Our business is to improve players’ living standards not club officials because even without you, there will still be sports,” added a tough-talking Ohaga. Matasi told the court that as things stand, there is no bonafide officials of the club following a ruling by the Magistrate Court which issued an order restraining the two parties from claiming leadership of the club. “As things stand, the petitioner has no locus to bring this matter before this court (SDT) because it is pending at the Magistrate Court and we will be going
back there after 10 days,” he said. Opwora group took over the leadership of the club following the resignation of the previous officer bearers led by Allan Kasavuli. A group led by Mule and Allan Kasavule held “their election” in June the Railways Club to take over the club. Opwora, however, argued that the tribunal has the power to hear any sports dispute, adding that postponing the matter will create power vacuum. “We cannot stay in a vacuum from June to December without knowing who runs the club. The situation has chased away fans and sponsors and we need them back. (Former) Sponsors Mumias Sugar are willing to come back if AFC Leopards shows that we have complied with the Sports Acts, but we can’t because the matter is still in court,” argued Opwora’s attorney. Morris Osundwa. The Magistrate Court is expected to give direction on December 24.
WRANGLES IN THE DEN: An Ingwe fan displays a scarf ahead of a past match. The club has been dogged by leadership wrangles pitting two factions. It is tough times for AFC Leopards lovers, as things turn upside down for one of the country’s most successful teams.
Africa giants shock minnows to reach 2018 WC group stage Africa big boys registered huge in the World Cup qualification matches last night to go through to the group stage. All the five teams who represented the continent in Brazil last year look particularly well equipped to complete the Russia journey after comfortable wins. Algeria last night handed Tanzania a shocking 7-0 beating in Algiers to sail through to the group stages. After a 2-2 draw in the secondround first leg in Tanzania, Christian Gourcuff ’s bullied their opponents in Blida with Faouzi Ghoulam and Islam Slimani scoring two goals each as Yacine Brahimi, Riyad Mahrez and Carl
Medjani added other goals to condemn Taifa Stars. Ivory Coast were also comfortable winners, adding to their 1-0 first-leg lead over Liberia with a 3-0 success thanks to Giovanni Sio’s brace and one from Jean Seri. Egypt overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit in style by thumping Rigobert Song-led Chad 4-0, while Nigeria’s 2-0 home win over Swaziland saw them progress after a goalless first leg, Efe Ambrose and Moses Simon the goalscorers. Ghana - whose quarter-final appearance in 2010 remains the equal best of any African nation at a World Cup - secured their place in the last qualifying stage
as strikes from Wakaso Mubarak and Jordan Ayew secured a 2-0 win after a 0-0 first-leg draw against Comoros. Cameroon’s work had largely been done with a 3-0 first-leg win at Niger, and Alexandre Belinga’s men finished the job with a goalless draw. South Africa’s passage was similarly comfortable as Manucho Diniz’s own goal midway through the second half earned them a 1-0 win over Angola and a 4-1 aggregate victory. Senegal, who like Cameroon and Ghana have also reached the last eight of a World Cup, prevailed - their 3-0 win over Madagascar seeing them through 5-2.

Defeat dims Kenya’s hopes of taking part in 2018 World Cup in Russia
S
hambolic preparation, fatigue and lack of motivation were the forces that united against Harambee Stars when they crashed out of the Fifa World Cup qualifiers to Cape Verde last night. A goal in each half at the National Stadium in Praia, Cape Verde was all the host needed to eliminate Harambee Stars from progressing to the 2018 Russia World Cup qualifying group stage. The Kenyan contingent arrived in Praia just three hours to kick-off following a long journey that began in Nairobi Monday night after the team’s chartered plane delayed the take off at the Wilson Airport by close to 10 hours. The delay was caused by failure between the Aircraft’s owner and Football Kenyan Federation (FKF) to agree on the payment modalities. The issue saw FKF President Sam Nyamweya being arrested yesterday morning for
questioning over the manner in which the federation handled the team. The result cancelled Stars’ 1-0 advantage in the first leg last week after they lost 2-1 on aggregate, following an own goal in the 46th minute and another in the 52nd minute. This was a perfect revenge for Cape Verde, who lost the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations place to Kenya in 2002/03 qualifiers. This was also the first time that Cape Verde has beaten Kenya in their last four meeting since 1-0 win in both legs of the Cup of Nations qualifier which was followed by a 1-0 win last week Harun Shakava headed into his own net at the stroke of the first half from a Cape Verde free-kick to put the host in the driving seat at the stroke of first half. Omar Mbongi, had
felled Odair Fortes just outside the box and the resultant free-kick from Heldon Ramos beat goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch after the ball bounced off the defence piling more pressure on Shakava who headed in his own net. The host picked up from where they left after the break when Ramos rattled Mbongi on the left flank hole. The inexperienced fullback was dispossessed by Carlos Alberto whose acute cross found Ramos unmarked slotting home the second to condemn the hapless and worn-out Stars. Harambee Stars Coach Bobby Williamson introduced Sportpesa PL top scorer Jesse Were for Clifton Miheso and Jacob Kelli for
Kelvin Kimani, but the changes returned no dividends for the team dogged by off-the pitch challenges ahead of the match squad. Keny a’s
meaningful chances came from Clifton in the 29th when he cut through the opponents defence, but his cross failed to pick Michael Olunga who was quite in the entire game. Christian Bwamy also came close to scoring, but he was denied by Blue Shark’s goalkeeper Josima Diaz who had a good day in office. Meanwhile, Kenya will now shift his attention to this weekend’s CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup. They have to gather again and focus on Sunday’s crunch tie against Uganda in Ethiopia.
DOWN AND OUT: Harambe Stars skipper Victor Wanyama on the turf. Kenya were eliminated in the 2018 World Cup qualyfing fist round after going down 2-0 in the hands of host Cape Verde last night. Stars had hoped to qualify after a slim 1-0 win in the first leg last Friday at the Nyayo National Stadium.
