World put on alert as terror rattles Europe
T
he world has been put on alert following Friday’s terror attack in Paris amid fears that militants are keen to spread their killing spree across the globe. European countries have particularly remained on alert since the barbaric act of last week which left 129 people killed. World leaders including US President Barack Obama, Russia’s Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel
have urged their forces to ramp up security checks saying the “world is at war.” At a G20 summit in Turkey this week, the world leaders promised tighter co-operation in the wake of the attacks. Obama said the US and France had made a new agreement on intelligence sharing while Putin yesterday ordered Russia’s armed forces to co-ordinate with the French military as
“allies” on a joint action plan in Syria, signalling a growing rapprochement after the terror attacks on Paris and downing of a Russian airliner. French President Francois Hollande said he would travel to meet US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin in the coming days to discuss action aimed at “destroying the so-called Islamic State” which have claimed responsibility for the attack. Patriotic Harambee Stars bowed out of contention for a place in the 2018 Fifa World Cup after going down 2-0 to Cape Verde in the second leg of their preliminary qualifying match in Praia last night. Heldon Ramos struck twice within seven minutes for the tiny African nation to cancel out Kenya’s prior advantage to the match and ensure the Atlantic Ocean islanders sail through to the group stages on a 2-1 aggregate. But the players will be excused for the defeat in a match which could have gone either way had had the squad been managed better. The Stars were scheduled to fly out to Praia, the capital of Cape Verde on Monday morning, but delayed following insistence by Skyward Express, the firm that had been contracted to fly the players that it be paid in full before take- off. The players had to wait and could only depart from Wilson Airport at 10pm Monday, some 24 hours to the crucial tie, with the flight scheduled to take close to 20 hours. There are no direct flights between Nairobi and Praia and the chartered plane had to make a stop-over in Kano, Southern Nigeria to refuel before proceeding to Cape Verde, a distance of 6, 870 kilometers. Their arrival four hours to the game meant they did not get time to relax and prepare for the tie. See Story on Back Page
