T H R E AT E N I N G : Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed and Defence’s Rachel Omamo at the ASP meeting at The Hague last evening. The African Union has told the ICC to terminate the case against Ruto or risk a walkout from the Rome Statute by her members.
he African Union (AU) has called for the termination of the ICC case against Deputy President William Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang, saying recent events suggest it is already dead. AU said the admission of recanted evidence in the case facing Ruto and Sang is unacceptable and only means the prosecution has no evidence to back their charges. Speaking during the ongoing 14th Session of the Assembly of State Parties in The Hague, Netherlands, AU officials led by Ethiopian Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told the ICC to terminate the case. “The DP has co-operated with the court and the use of recanted evidence against him is unacceptable. The prosecution must accept the case is dead and should be terminated,” said Ghebreyesus. AU has also blasted the court for what it termed an unrelenting and biased focus on Africa. “We have arrived at the conclusion that ICC, whose establishment was strongly supported by Africa, is no longer a court for all,” he said in quotes carried by AFP. The union has also threatened to pull out of the Rome Statute if the case against Ruto is not dropped. “The continent may be left with no other option than to reserve the right to take measures it may think necessary in the interest of preserving and safeguarding the stability, dignity, sovereignty and integrity of the continent,” the Ethiopian minister further told AFP. Kenya is pushing to have the use of recanted evidence in the case against Ruto and Sang reversed by the 123 countries that have signed up to the Hague-based ICC’s founding statute. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
