Uhuru’s position on economy challenged

esterday’s reassurance by President Uhuru Kenyatta that the economy is stable has today been challenged with an MP saying the Head of State may not be aware of the “goings on the ground.” Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter has told the President to seek the
truth on the state of the economy, saying the reality on the ground is not in tandem with his word yesterday. President Kenyatta who spoke on the economy for the first time yesterday said “Kenya is okay” and that the country is moving forward.
“I think the President is just at State House where he receives documents and signs, he doesn’t know what he is saying as far as the state of economy is concerned,” Keter said today during a morning interview on Citizen TV. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

MPs dismiss Uhuru remarks on the state of the country’s economy
From Page 1
While President Kenyatta sought to reassure Kenyans that things were on the right tracktrack, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich, however, acknowledged that the economy was going through a rough period. He likened the situation to a plane going through turbulence and advised Kenyans to fasten their seatbelts. “I want to liken this economic situation to a plane at 40,000 metres high and there is turbulence. When you are faced with turbulence, you don’t jump, but the cabin crew will tell passengers to fasten their belts. That’s what is happening in our economy now,” the CS told guests at the Eldoret Club at the weekend. Keter wants President Kenyatta to get a proper brief from his advisers on the ‘real’ economic situation. Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi expressed dismay saying the President was not up to date with the current happennings. “We are dismayed at the President’s remarks on the economic status of the country. rates are going up and businesses are closing. The cost of loans have become unbearable and to say things are okay is being at odds with the reality,” he said. While Rotich insists that lending

Court orders MP Jakoyo arrested over false claims on Raila Odinga’s life Justice Chemitei ruled that the MP had failed to prove his case against the Tobiko. The DPP had wanted Jakoyo to be charged with falsely claiming that there was a plot to assassinate Raila. He made the claims in April 2012 at a funeral in Bondo when Raila was the Prime Minister. “Chairman, they want to kill you. You are about to die in a few weeks to come. I am ready to record a statement even before the Bondo OCPD to confirm the seriousness of the matter,” Midiwo was quoted as having said. But after interrogation by the CID, it was found that the sensational claims by the MP were false forcing the Tobiko to call for his arrest. The DPP then directed that the MP be charged with giving false evidence. But Jakoyo swiftly moved to court to block his arrest arguing that he had blown the whistle and ought to be congratulated. In court, the DPP said he had failed to substantiate his claim. “It is my finding that the petitioner has failed to demonstrate that the intended prosecution was driven by
another purpose other than justice and enforcement of the law. The same is hereby dismissed with costs to the respondents,” Justice Chemitei ruled in concurrence with the DPP.

adjust immediately and drop their lending rates as promised by the government. Murimi said the falling of the Kenyan shilling is not unique as the value of other currencies also depreciated but
said banks need at least two months to adjust and the earliest the lending rates can come down is next January. “Whatever Kenyans are being told is good and sounds nice but facts remain that the lending rates can only come down by next week as banks also need time to adjust before lowering their rates,” Murimi said. Murimi said the projections made by Rotich on the cutting down of government wastage by other ministries should be embraced. “Cabinet Secretaries in other ministries must be ready to walk the talk and cut down on the spending,” he said. The same thought was shared by Keter who asked the government to leave within its means. Asked about his quest to impeach Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru, Keter maintained that he has nothing personal against the minister and that he is just playing his oversight role as a legislator. “I have nothing personal against the CS, corruption is a concern to all Kenyans and as a legislator, I am just playing my oversight role,” he said.
65 attacked as assaults on local journalists rise Attacks on local journalists have increased substantially in 2015, a report has revealed. According to a report by a media lobby group, Article 19, a record of 65 individual attacks were reported between January and September 2015. The report titled “Silenced and Intimidated: Attacks on Freedom of Expression in Kenya,” said on average, seven journalists are attacked monthly, and little is done to address the cases. Speaking during the launch of the report at a Nairobi Hotel, Article 19’s Eastern Africa regional director Henry Maina said the report demonstrated a sustained crackdown to supress, control the press and limit the free flow of information. “Of the 42 incidents recorded, only three have been investigated and the perpetrators taken to court; this is 7 per cent rate; which is inadmissibly high level of impunity regarding attacks on journalists,” said Maina. He said local journalists
continue to face persecution in their line of duty with little or no action taken against the perpetrators to guarantee the safety of journalists. The new report exposed the disturbing trend towards deterioration of freedom of expression and media in Kenya which it says has ultimate far-reaching consequences for the country’s democracy, security and economic growth. According to the report, corruption and demonstrations remained the most sensitive stories for journalists to cover in 2015. “Introduction of devolution has also opened journalists to a barrage of new sensitivities and security challenges: they are being forced to grapple with competing political and inter-ethnic interests, hindering objective reporting on complex local politics” the report reveals. However, Maina said sustained assault on the media is undermining press freedom, and the safety and
security of journalists. “Failure to bring those responsible for attacks on journalists to account sends wrong signals that the media can be silenced through violence,” he said. The report indicate that a number of journalists will be forced to resort to selfcensorship, hampering the realisation of the right to free expression. The media lobby group urged the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to initiate investigations and prosecution of all cases where journalists have been attacked or threatened. It also challenged the government to take the necessary steps to ensure journalists are free to carry out their work. The Launch of the report coincided with commemoration of United Nations International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists which is observed every November 2.

Avoid talk that can divide country, Ruto tells politicians Deputy President William Ruto has urged leaders to desist from making reckless remarks that can polarise the country. The Deputy President said leaders should not make statements that will not spur progress in the country. “As leaders let us avoid making reckless statements that can divide the country, these utterances do not bring cohesion among the people of Kenya,” he said. The Deputy President called for national unity and an end to political wrangles being witnessed in the country between the Opposition and the government. He said the government will serve citizens irrespective of their political affiliation. “We are not a government of only Jubilee supporters, we are a government of the people of Kenya,” Ruto said. The Deputy President criticised the Opposition for misleading Kenyans on the state of the economy, saying their figures are not factual and only meant to gain political mileage. “The figures being put across by Cord about the economic development are not correct,” he said. The Deputy President on Sunday maintained that the government is “on top of things” in managing the economy and that there is no cause for alarm. Ruto who addressed worshipers at ACK St Andrew’s Church Barani in Malindi said Kenyans should unite and build a prosperous country.
Senator Bule charged with hate speech, freed on Sh1m bail
Tana River Senator Ali Abdi Bule was today morning charged with hate speech and incitement to violence. The senator, who appeared before Mombasa Principal Magistrate Diana Mochache, was later released on a Sh1 million surety bond or a Sh500,000 cash bail after he denied the charges. Bule is alleged to have uttered words intended to incite two communities in Tana River on July 15, at Garsen sub-county in Tana River. The court ordered the senator not to set foot in Kanagoni, Kilifi county where several residents were displaced because of his utterances. Bule was also warned against discussing the matter until the case is heard and determined. The DPP approved Bule’s prosecution following recommendations by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) recommendations after investigations. Mochache had last week declined to grant the prosecution’s application to issue summons compelling Bule to appear in court to plead to the charge.

Catholic church seeks Sh100m for Pope’s visit
The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops has called on Kenyans to contribute funds towards the preparations for the Papal visit this month and the legacy projects that will be undertaken thereafter. Right Reverend Alfred Rotich, Chairman of the Pope’s visit secretariat said the M-Pesa PayBill number to use is 405060 with the bishops targeting to raise Sh100 million. Some contributions have already been received from corporate entities but the amount raised so far will be announced on Tuesday once the funds received have been consolidated. Rotich also requested each Catholic Parish to send three buses of parishioners for the mass which will be celebrated with Pope Francis at the University of Nairobi during his visit. In a joint briefing with Rotich, State House Spokesperson Manoah Esipisu said preparations for the Holy Father’s visit were 80 per cent concluded. He said the Traffic Commandant would in the coming week make known how the millions expected to attend the mass at the Universi-

for the altar and podium for the mass and all venues to be visited by the Holy Father are on course. The choirs that will sing during the papal mass are practicing in different parishes all over the
country and the registration of the young people who will spend time with Holy Father is almost concluded,” he said. Rotich called on the Kenyan public to join in national prayers.
Bishops call for total truce ahead of visit Catholic bishops have urged politicians to shun ethnic undertones and hate remarks ahead of Pope Francis’ visit later this month. Pope’s visit secretariat chairman Bishop Alfred Rotich asked politicians to preach peace and unity among Kenyans instead of divisive politics. “Our nation faces great trials that threaten to tear it apart, the politicking, name calling, ethnic in-
citement…” said Rotich while addressing the country ahead of the much awaited visit by Pope Francis. He says it’s already too much for Kenyans who have to contend with the affliction of hard economic times and cannot contend, “with disunity at the leadership level.” He cited Proverb 28: 25 to call for unity among Kenyans and embrace peace. It reads; “The greedy stir up con-

flict, but those who trust in the Lord will prosper.” The Church has also called for national prayers and conversion, saying the bickering has disintegrated the country further. Rotich, who was addressing a press briefing on the Pope’s visit at the Office of the President on behalf of the Catholic Bishops in Kenya, urged Kenyans to embrace oneness ahead of the much-awaited visit by the Holy Father. “Our country has been called to peace and prosperity and with this knowledge we should steer clear of paths that lead us on the wrong direction,” he appealed. “Let us come together and humbly seek redemption and set an example for the generations to come by always seeking God first in times of challenges and also in times of prosperity,” he said. Bishop Rotich said the country faces major problems ranging
from economics challenges and disunity, but urged Kenyans to unite in praying for the country. Earlier, Chief Justice Willy Mutunga called on civil society groups to intensify pressure on government to tame increased hate speech which can lead to violence in the country. “As we approach the elections, the drums of possible violence are being heard by all of us,” he said. He says the country is dancing on a precipice and it may flip over if something is not done more so ahead of 2017 General Election. “We have to internalise these problems as we have a 30-month window to implement the programme. As middle civil society organisations in the democracy and governance sector, we still face challenges that the elite face,” he said. The three-day visit by Pope Francis will kick off on November 25 to 27.

Task force to probe runaway expenditure at varsity formed A task force has been set up to investigate runaway expenditure at the University of Nairobi (UoN), which has created a rift between ViceChancellor Peter Mbithi and his deputy for administration and finance, Prof Bernard Njoroge. Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi said the taskforce would review policies on expenditure and staff transfers. The decision was arrived at on Friday after a day-long meeting called by Prof Kaimenyi and attended by members of the University Council and University Management Board. The university management is being accused of nonconfidentiality, tribalism and corruption. Prof Mbithi and Prof Njoroge have been engaged in a public spat since August over management of resources, with expenditure currently standing at Sh2.5 billion. A brief by finance officer Michael Karue earlier this year described the deficit as “very severe”. The conflict started when Prof Mbithi directed that any expenditure above Sh100,000 be approved by his office. He also took over performance contracting, which used to be the deputy vice-chancellor’s responsibility. Management has since frozen employment to reduce the wage bill, which is Sh750 million monthly. The meeting also resolved that the management board and council ensure university policies and regulations are strictly followed. “To promote better communication, transparency, team work and team spirit, members of the University management board shall, at all times, be consulted key decisions,” said Prof Kaimenyi. “All staff, especially those in the management, shall always endeavour to exhaust existing internal legal mechanisms to resolve problems without resorting to the media, Parliament and the courts,” said Prof Kaimenyi. On Wednesday, the dons took their battle to Parliament where Prof Njoroge told the Committee on Education that Prof Mbithi was frustrating him. And on the following day, before the same committee, Prof Mbithi threatened to take disciplinary action against his deputy for alleged insubordination.
97% of jobs already evaluated We have completed over 97 per cent of jobs in the on-going job evaluation exercise for public servants, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has said. The Commission is now embarking on addressing issues that were raised during the job evaluation exercise that was concluded recently, before starting the process of signing off the job descriptions. C o m m i s s i o n Chairperson Sarah Serem said her commission is still looking into the various issues that were raised during the exercise before signing off the job descriptions for all public officers. “In instances where a job has been overvalued or valued correctly, there will be no remuneration adjustment but where the job is undervalued, the salary will be reviewed within the context of affordability and sustainability,” said Serem. Serem said the
job evaluation will help the commission establish if the jobs in the public sector establishments are overvalued, undervalued or valued correctly. However, she reiterated that the country’ interest is to ensure that performance and productivity in the public sector is enhanced in order to bring down the unit cost of service delivery, attract foreign investment and spur economic growth and development. “The key principle we are focusing on is productivity and performance,” she said, adding that the country’s public sector productivity is quite low compared to the private sector and other stronger economies. On the issue of harmonisation of salaries of public officers, the Serem said it may be achieved in the medium to long term due to the existence of distortion and disparity in the

Sh245 million to compensate Wildlife victims The government has set aside Sh245 million to compensate for lives lost and property destroyed as a result of human-wildlife conflict, Environment and Natural Resources Cabinet Secretary Prof Judy Wakhungu has said. She said the money will be used to settle genuine claims from people who have suffered losses associated with wildlife attacks. “We have allocated some kitty to settle claims that arise from humanwildlife conflict,” she said. The CS said the money was set aside
in the current 2015/16 financial year to handle the claims. Wakhungu admitted that due to lack of allocation in the past years, County Wildlife Compensation Committees across the country could not start working on the claims. As a result, all committees had been paralyzed and rendered non-operational due to lack of funds. However, with the monies being made available, it is expected that the committees will start verification of claims from victims of human-
wildlife conflict. Already, compensation worth Sh15 million has been settled in Kajiado County for three deaths that were caused by Wildlife. She further noted that the ministry had received over 800 claims that would be settled after being analysed and verified. The Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013 created a provision for compensation to people and families of victims of human-wildlife conflict. In case of death, the government
will pay Sh5m to the family of the victim. When a person suffers permanent injury in wildlife-related mishap would be paid Sh3m while non-permanent injury will attract compensation of Sh2m. Compensation for destruction of crops and property will depend on the magnitude of destruction. The CS said the government was committed to eliminating cases of human-wildlife conflict and would invest in man power and resources to bring the conflict levels down.
Lobby sues State over lost money through tax evasion Lobby sues State over lost money through tax evasion The Tax Justice Network Africa (TJN-A) has sued the government over what it terms “illicit financial flows” incurred through tax evasion by multinational companies. The Pan- African Organisation has moved to court following the recent agreement on Double Taxation Avoidance (DTA) between the Kenyan Government and Mauritius, Qatar and United Arab Emirates. The organisation Executive Director, Alvin Mosioma, cited the unconstitutionality of the
agreement terming it “a loophole for multinational companies and rich individuals to shift profits abroad and evade paying appropriate taxes.” “Our economy is on financial meltdown and this kind loop-hole ridden double taxation agreement with tax havens as Mauritius and other countries such as Qatar are a wild pilferage to our country. We must seek legal redress to caution further implications,” said Mosioma. The organisation wants the government, especially the National Treasury Cabinet secretary, Kenya Revenue
Authority and The Attorney General to stop the implementation of the agreement. Statics from TJN-A have revealed that KRA loses Sh8.76 billion through tax evasion annually especially by the multinational companies most of them that are covered by the DTA agreements. In their report, TJN-A termed President Kenyatta’s call for a life style audit at Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) as hypocritical since the National Treasury is continuously making major drawbacks in the management of the national coffers. “How can we accuse KRA of
unmet tax targets yet we sign such dubious agreements? posed Mosioma. Meanwhile, Mombasa Senator Omar Hassan has sad the President has failed to fight corruption in the country. He took issue with the National Assembly, saying they have resoundingly failed on their mandate to ratify International Agreements and treaties which are meant to benefit a few and lead to unfolding scandals. “Parliament has failed on its mandate. All treaties must be scrutinized by the House. This kind of agreements are for the big who want to reap from tax evasions,” said Senator Omar.

Russian passenger jet ‘broke into pieces in midair’, say officials TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2015
A Russian passenger jet broke into pieces in midair, a top aviation official said yesterday, but added it was too soon to say what could have caused the crash in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. The Kogalymavia Flight 9268 crashed on Saturday morning killing all 224 people on board and left debris strewn across a remote area of a region plagued by a violent Islamic insurgency. “Disintegration of the fuselage took place in the air, and the fragments are scattered around a large area (about 20 square kilometres),” Viktor Sorochenko, executive director of Russia’s Interstate Aviation Committee, told journalists, according to reports. Footage from the scene showed mangled wreckage and piles of belongings from the plane spilled over a largely flat, barren landscape. Learning that the plane broke into pieces while in the air helps narrow down what could have caused the crash, but there are still plenty of possibilities, one expert said. “It narrows it down a little bit, but there are a number of issues that could have affected this plane,” said Peter Goelz, a CNN aviation analyst and former managing director of the US National Transportation Safety Board. “And terrorism has not been ruled out. “It could have been some sort of catastrophic failure, perhaps caused by an earlier maintenance problem. It could have been a centre fuel tank that might have exploded. They’re
going to have to go back through the entire maintenance history of this plane to see whether all the corrections and repairs that had been ordered have been done.” According to the Aviation Safety Network, which tracks aviation incidents, the same plane’s tail struck a runway while landing in Cairo in 2001 and required repair. At the time, the aircraft was operated by another carrier. While authorities investigated what caused Saturday’s crash, mourners paid their respects to victims at a makeshift memorial yesterday at
Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg, where the aircraft was supposed to have ended its journey. Early today, a Russian plane carrying the remains of 144 of the crash victims landed in St. Petersburg, Russia’s state-run news agency RIA Novosti reported. Russian officials had previously said as many as 162 bodies were on the plane repatriating the remains. It remains unclear what caused Flight 9268 to drop off radar and hurtle to the ground, in clear weather and just 23 minutes after taking off from Sharm el-Sheikh.
Speaking to high-ranking army officers in Cairo yesterday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi asked them to observe a moment of silence before urging the public not to jump to conclusions. Determining what happened will require a lengthy investigation, he said. “These are complicated matters that require advanced technologies and wide investigations that might go on for months,” he said. The crash is most likely the result of a technical failure, Egyptian Airports Co. chief Adel Al-Mahjoob told CNN Arabic on Saturday, although
he said the plane passed a routine check before it took off. Russian media outlets said the pilot reported technical problems and requested a landing at the nearest airport before the plane went missing, but Egyptian authorities disputed that claim. Air traffic control recordings do not show any distress calls, Egyptian Civil Aviation Minister Hossam Kamel said at a news conference. “There was nothing abnormal before the plane crash,” he said. “It suddenly disappeared from the radar.”

Turkey ruling party wins back house majority Turkey’s ruling party Justice and Development Party (AKP) has won a critical parliamentary election, regaining the majority it lost in June. With almost all ballots counted, State-run Anadolu Agency said AKP had won 49.4 per cent of the vote, with the main opposition CHP on 25.4 per cent. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said voters had “shown they prefer action and development to controversy”. The pro-Kurdish HDP crossed the 10 per cent threshold needed to claim seats. The nationalist MHP will also take seats in Ankara. In a statement, Erdogan said the electorate had “given proof of their strong desire for the unity and integrity” of Turkey. Polls had indicated the AKP would receive only between 40-43 per cent of the vote, in line with how it fared in June when it lost its majority for the first time in 13 years. Attempts to form a coalition government after the June election failed. With almost all of the results counted, the AKP had won substantially more than the 276 seats needed to get a majority, allowing it to form a government on its own.
Al-Shabaab kill 15 in Mogadishu hotel attack Al-Shabaab Islamist militants have attacked a hotel in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, killing at least 15 people. Gunmen used two car bombs to blast their way into the Sahafi Hotel compound before storming the building, police said. Victims included at least one MP and the general, who led the 2011 offensive that drove al-Shabaab out of Mogadishu. African Union troops and government forces said they have regained control of the hotel after a fierce gun battle. The hotel is popular with Somalia’s MPs.
A website associated with al-Shabaab said it was responsible for the attack, which it said was carried out early in the morning to avoid civilian casualties. This is a clear change in strategy, says BBC World Service Africa editor Mary Harper. Until now, attacks in Mogadishu have been carried out during the day and evening, killing civilians who happen to be in the targeted area. The owner of the hotel and Gen Abdikarim Dhagabadan, who commanded the operation against al-Shabaab in 2011, were among the victims.
The attack comes a day after deadly clashes between jihadist fighters and African Union (AU) troops in the Bakool region near the border with Ethiopia. The AU is helping the government battle alShabaab. Security in Somalia has improved, but the alQaeda-linked group still attacks Mogadishu regularly. The militants have also targeted neighbouring countries, killing almost 150 people in an assault on Garissa University College in Kenya in April.
New assault on ISIS strongholds in Iraq and Syria A thick column of black smoke hangs over the Iraqi Syrian border near the town of Ash Shaddadi in Syria’s Hasakah province. Above the area are the circular contrails of coalition planes. Kurdish military sources on the Iraqi side of the border say ISIS strongholds and oil fields are
being targeted south of Hasakah city. At the same time the new USbacked alliance in Syria, the Syrian Democratic Forces, has announced a new offensive to liberate areas of Hasakah province occupied by ISIS. Coalition airstrikes and land offensives led by Kurdish forces
on both sides of the border are aimed at interrupting ISIS supply lines, retaking territory the group has held for more than a year and putting pressure on critical towns such as Deir Ezzor. Kurdish Peshmerga forces on the Iraqi side of the border including a brigade of some 5,000 Yazidi fighters - are preparing
for what officers describe as an imminent offensive to seize the town of Sinjar. There has been a sharp increase in airstrikes on ISIS-held parts of the town in the last few days. If ISIS loses Sinjar, it will be more difficult for it to resupply the city of Mosul, the largest it hold

Africa youth youngest in world but earn less than Sh203 every day Africa has the youngest youth population in the world with 72 per cent of the continent’s inhabitants under the age of 35 living on less than Sh203 a day. This varies greatly from rising economies such as China where people over 65 years represent a large chunk of the population and are set to encompass a quarter of the country’s inhabitants within the next three decades. Following the recently-concluded Young Africa Works Summit, it has been revealed that young people are going to great lengths to overcome unemployment. However, without assistance from their governments and the private sector, some of these efforts remain futile. In Africa, 600 million people are under the age of 25 and 72 per cent of the continent’s youth live on less than $2 (Sh203) a day, numbers released by the MasterCard Foundation have revealed. The data, dubbed the Youth Livelihood Diaries, was based on preliminary findings from a research conducted over the past six months. The research looked into youth employment behaviours in Africa. “There is a distinct lack of research
into the daily lives of African youth as they seek secure, safe and better paid work,” said MasterCard Foundation Director of Programmes, Financial Inclusion and Youth Livelihoods, Ann Miles. She said the agricultural sector, a major driver of Africa’s many economies, is set to create eight million stable jobs by 2020. It can create up to 14 million within the next five years if the sector is accelerated. “We believe it has to feature prominently in development plans for the continent if we hope to achieve a prosperous future for young Africans,” Miles said. The Young Africa Works Summit, which was hosted by the MasterCard Foundation between October 29 and 30, 2015, was the first event of its kind. With the theme of “Practical Solutions for Lifelong Success”, the event, held in Cape Town, South Africa, brought together a community of 300 thought leaders from NGOs, government, funders and the private sector committed to developing sustainable youth employment strategies in Africa. It also directly involved young people in order to help them explore ways
of securing meaningful economic opportunities. This year’s Summit focused on best practices and effective approaches for preparing young people for employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in agriculture. Sub-themes included demanddriven skills development, mixed livelihoods and youth financial services.
The Summit revealed that technology will shape the way Africans do business and young people will be key in this transition. Findings from the Youth Livelihoods Diaries research project indicate that young people in Africa need to have multiple jobs to survive. Although many of them pursue various micro-business ideas, they often find themselves also having to

child deaths receives boost
The government’s ongoing move to reduce child mortality is gaining traction as private sector stakeholders continue to support the drive. The drive is part of a movement that, earlier this month, targeted Mandera County, which has one of the highest infant mortality rates with 3,795 deaths recorded last year. Phillips, a technology company of the United Nation Population Fund and the county government partnered in the six-month project, launching health centres in Mandera town while increasing the number of medical care workers in the region. The drive to reduce child mortality is a countrywide initiative and the latest contributor is Bharti Airtel, a leading telecommunications services provider. The firm donated a mobile
clinic worth Sh10 million to support the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta’s Beyond Zero campaign, which aims to reduce high rates of maternal and child mortality in Kenya. The Beyond Zero campaign, which was launched in January 2014, aims to purchase 47 fully- equipped mobile clinics for all counties. Since the campaign began, 32 fully kitted mobile clinics have been purchased. In support of the government’s effort to improve health service provision in Kenya, Airtel has in the past launched health initiatives which include, the donation of space heaters to reduce infant mortality in Kiambu County hospitals and the support of the Fountain Africa Trust Midwives maternal health programme in Bungoma County, among other initiatives.

Kenya 1.5m semen to serve demand for AI MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2015
Kenya Animal Genetic Resource Centre (KAGRC) will produce 1.5 million straws of semen annually to meet the highly-increasing local and export demand of Artificial Insemination (AI) services. KAGRC has played a major role in the agriculture sector through production, preservation and conservation of genetic material such as semen, embryos, tissue and live
therise Express Kenya closes week as highest gainer Express Kenya Ltd was last week’s top gainer following a 7.50 per cent gain over the course of the period, reversing the previous week’s -12.09 per cent slide. The firm’s shares ended the week at Sh4.30 from their previous closing price of Sh4.00. The company is primarily engaged in the provision of clearing and forwarding services as well as warehousing and logistics. The gain in the share price was due to increased trading on the counter as a total of 5,900 shares were traded over the course of the week compared to a total of 500 shares which exchanged hands the previous week.

Olympia Capital shares slide Olympia Capital Holdings Ltd took last week’s position of top losing stock following a -11.6 per cent slide in its share price over the course of the week’s trading. The company’s shares ended the week at a price of Sh4.20 from their previous closing price of Sh4.75. The company is primarily engaged in the manufacture of building materials and home improvement goods. The counter traded 55,800 shares over the course of the week. animals. To keep up with the increasing demand for its services, KAGRC recently acquired four liquid nitrogen plants stationed in Nairobi, Eldoret, Meru and Nyahururu though its planning to set two more substations in Sotik and Kirinyaga. In addition, the centre has rolled out an SMS-based bull advisory system, which provides timely
breeding information to farmers upon request, something KAGRC believes will “reduce inbreeding, leading to improved production and profitability as well as empowering farmers with relevant skills on livestock management practices.” This comes at a time when poor artificial insemination techniques are some of the reasons hindering the growth of the dairy industry across
the country. The inferior semen in use and inefficient distribution mechanisms has greatly contributed to increased low quality cow breeds in Kenya, and Africa, resulting in reduced milk production and inferior quality meat. Recognising this large discrepancy, many developing world countries are striving to improve milk yields and increase farmers’ incomes and food
security through the use of Artificial insemination. However, artificial insemination, at its simplest, requires that semen be collected from a wellbred bull, and inserted into a cow on heat. A lot of research and development has enabled semen to be cryogenically frozen with liquid nitrogen, a technique that preserves it, almost indefinitely.

ho is Tate? Tate is a noisy, bubbly and interactive “next-door” kind of girl who is deeply in touch with her emotions. I love animals and music. What is your sound and genre? I sing afro-soul and afro-jazz. I love performing with a band, there is something about singing along a piano or a guitar and how my voice blends in that gives me goose bumps every single time. What or who inspires your music? My music is inspired by everyday life and of those around me, I do my best to write music which is relatable to, I tell stories that would otherwise be unspoken of. I also love writing comical songs. When did you start singing? Like everyone else, I started as a child in church. Later when I got into high school my friends started telling me I had a beautiful voice. After high school I had a bet with dad, he

Breaking free lost and bought me a guitar and enrolled me up at a music school and that is how I started doing music commercially and just recently, I got signed to a record label. How did you get into karaoke hosting? When I was 19 years old I got a call from a friend who wanted a karaoke hostess, I took it up and kept getting calls and more calls, I stopped for a year or so then got back at it, I honestly love hosting Karaoke. What are some of your latest music releases? At the moment I am working on doing the final touches of my new single called Utuku (Kamba for Night /Midnight). It’s an amazing song I can’t wait for everyone to listen to it. Apart from music, what else do you do? I am an Undergraduate University Student, songwriter and an actress (I’ve featured in a couple of movies). What is your view of the music industry in Kenya in terms of growth? I feel that we’re heading in the right direction, DJs are actually asking for new artistes, radio and TV stations are also playing new music as opposed to when we only had a couple of artistes getting airplay. What are your present and future plans in regards to music? As of the moment, I am working on writing more songs and recording more, and also brushing up my skills on instruments, and of course getting more audience to listen to my music. I want to be legitimately a great musician in this country.

The veteran comedian who has been in the game for over 15 years has in the past been criticized for ‘using’ up and coming comedians to popularize his TV show. The night with Churchill was his chance to regain and retain his funny man title. The highlight of the night was a performance by gospel artiste Christina Shusho.

Calvo Mistari sets the bar at Godown gig
Saturday saw party lovers get treated to an afternoon of groovy music and performances by renowned local artistes during the October edition of the monthly Godown gig. This edition was graced by Calvo Mistari. The show kicked off in the late afternoon at the GoDown Arts Centre, witnessing a fair turnout probably owing to the fact that there were no entry charges. Apart from free entertainment, revelers were also treated to sumptuous nyama choma and free Wi-Fi at the venue, even as art lovers got a chance to sample the art wonder that is the GoDown Arts Centre. The climax was when Calvo Mistari literally set the audience on fire when he performed his much celebrated track, “Mwanaume ni Effort.” It might have been a chilly afternoon but Calvo sure warmed it up for all in attendance with his lyrical and performance talent. The GoDown Gig has become a must attend event in the Kenyan entertainment scene, having featured main acts such as King Kaka, Jamnazi, Nairobeez, Dela and Idi Aziz among others in the past edition. It was definitely a beautiful way to end October and usher in November.

SPORTS BRIEFS New Villa manager to attend Spurs game Ex-Arsenal midfielder Remi Garde will watch Aston Villa match against Tottenham tonight from the stand after his confirmation as the new Villa manager. Garde also the EX- Lyon boss is set to be confirmed as the new manager later today - replacing Tim Sherwood on a three and a half year deal. The 49-year-old inherits a team bottom of the Premier League with just four points from 10 games. Bastia coach Reginald Ray will become Garde’s assistant and the pair will take charge for the home fixture against Manchester City next Sunday. The former midfielder - who was Arsene Wenger’s first signing at Arsenal, was capped six times by his country. After retiring from playing at the age of 33, he coached at Lyon before becoming manager in 2011. Wenger confirmed Villa’s chief executive Tom Fox - a former Arsenal employee himself - had been in touch to discuss Garde’s pedigree.
Tevez thrilled with Boca Juniors league success A tearful Carlos Tevez revelled in Boca Juniors’ Argentine Primera Division success on Sunday. A first-half header from Fabian Monzon gave Boca a 1-0 win over Tigre in Buenos Aires for their first league crown since the 2011 Apertura. Tevez scored five goals in 12 league games after returning to his boyhood club from Juventus in June. The 31-year-old was delighted to bring the title back to Boca. “These guys needed this championship. From now on it will be a new Boca,” said Tevez. “I’ve left many sides a champion, but this feeling is unexplainable.” Tevez was overcome with emotion at the final whistle and said: “I am happy. I came back to feel this again. It’s difficult to talk.” The 31-year-old striker was part of the Boca team to win the same trophy in 2003 before moving to Corinthians in Brazil two years later. Boca are six points clear at the top with a game remaining in the league campaign.
Wanyama sees first EPL red in Bournemouth win Victor Wanyama was yesterday sent off for the first time in his English Premier career but that did not deter his Southampton side from beating Bournemouth 2-0. The Saint held on to the lead with 12 minutes to go after the Harambee Stars captain was sent off minute after a second bookable offence following a dangerous tackle on Lee Tomlin in the 77th minute. Southampton, who are seventh on the table with 17 points, eight adrift of leaders Manchester City scored two quick goals in the stroke of first half through Graziano Pele who set up Steven Davis before banging home the second. wThe red card was his first this season. He has however accumulated four yellow cards in his 10th start of the season. The card eroded Wanyama’s good week after he became the first East African player to have captained an EPL club when he skippered Saints to a 2-1 win over Aston Villa 2 – 1 in the League Cup clash last Wednesday.
Keitany, Biwott win Big Apple NYC city Marathon
Mary Keitany and Stanley Biwott have both boosted their chances of being named in the national marathon team to Rio Olympics after the duo won the New York City Marathon over the weekend. Athletics Kenya last week spelt out qualification to Rio with specific information to those wishing to don the national colours in Brazil to take part in at least five world marathon major races. Keitany responded to that directive by efending her title in a fashionable style, crossing the line in 2:24:25 at the IAAF Gold Label Road Race, while the men’s title went to Biwott who crossed the tape in 2:10:34 yesterday. Keitany became the first athlete to successfully defend her title at the
New York City Marathon since Paula Radcliffe in 2008. The marathon, they say, is a race which does not truly begin until 20 miles, and that was certainly the case in New York, with both winning moves coming in the closing miles after largely uneventful races beforehand. With an impressive turn of speed over the final five miles in the historic race, which wound its way through the Big Apple’s five boroughs, Keitany finished 1:07 ahead of Ethiopia’s Aselefech Mergia with 2:25:32. With cool and breezy conditions greeting the start in Staten Island, a ninewoman group led by Portugal’s Sara Moreira went through halfway in a steady 1:12:54, and were all together at 18 miles before the pace gradually increased
over the course of the next two miles. At 20 miles, the Kenyan pair of Keitany and 2013 NYCM champion Priscah Jeptoo, along with the Ethiopian duo of Tufa and Mergia, were the only ones left in contention at the front. Keitany cranked up the speed even further in the 21st mile, throwing in a 5:14 mile, which did a considerable damage to her rivals, and only Tufa was able to follow suit. However, Keitany surged again in the miles that followed – running the 22nd mile in 5:13, the 23rd in 5:16 – and reached 35km in 1:58:55. Behind Keitany, Mergia overtook the flagging Tufa with just under a mile to the finish to clinch second place in 2:25:32, with Tufa holding on for third in 2:25:50. Biwott crossed the line in 2:10:34 to take his first
marathon win since Paris in 2012 and afterwards, the Kenyan said a different focus in training had led to his breakthrough. Another Kenya Geoffrey Kamworor, 22 took second place in 2:10:48 with Ethiopian Lelisa Desisa who faded badly over the closing miles, but still hung on for third in 2:12:10 while former world record holder and defending champion Wilson Kipsang returned 2:12:45 to finish fourth in the men’s race. The race was dawdled through the opening 5km in 15:47 and, with more than a dozen athletes bunched together at the front, only marginally picked up the pace in the following miles to reach 10km in 31:31. In total, 50,229 runners entered to participate in this year’s event, which is the world’s largest marathon.
Mary Keitany won the New York marathon on Sunday to boost his chances of being named to the 2016 Olympic team. His compatriot Stanley Biwottt won the men’s race.
Ex-national Volleyball coach Omondi wanted in Botswana Former national men’s volleyball team head coach Geoffrey Omondi (pictured) is wanted by the Botswana Federation X-Sport can exclusively report. Omondi, who guided Kenya to the Africa Nations championships in Egypt before being replaced by Paul Gitau is understood to be in talks with the Botswana association to take up coaching role as the country’s men’s head coach. According to our source from Botswana, talks are at an advanced stage and his confirmation or otherwise
will be approved during the federation’s executive meeting later in the year. “We have been looking for coaches especially from Kenya because the standard of volleyball there (Kenya) is advanced and if we can get somebody, it will help improve our game,” our source who did not want to be named said. “We wanted Paul (Bitok) but he still has contract with Rwanda. I think Omondi will be a better replacement because if you look at his record with the national team, he is the only coach that put more emphasis on the development of players and not immediate result,” added the senior official from Botswana who is closely working behind the scenes to push through the deal.
Omondi, who holds a Level One coaching certificate confirmed that he has been approached, but nothing is official yet. “It is true they approached me, but nothing is official yet,” Omondi is currently the Cooperative Bank men’s volleyball club head coach. While the national men’s team has been lagging behind the rest in the regional stage, Omondi is the only Kenyan coach who has managed to force Bitok coached Rwanda to a five-set thriller, twice losing by 3-2 margin in his charge as the coach. If the deal goes through, Omondi will become the fourth Kenyan Volleyball coaching export after Bitok and Sammy Mulinge who are both in Rwanda and Japan-based Godfrey Owese.

Di Maria returns to as Madrid hosts PSG
PSG winger Angel Di Maria is set to return to Santiago Bernabeu, where he helped Real win the Champions League. The two sides meet tomorrow night after a barren draw in France a week ago.
A top of the bill clash between Real Madrid Paris SaintG e r m a i n at Santiago Bernabeu will be among the big matches tomorrow as UEFA Champions League action resumes. The two top teams failed to find the back of each other’s net at Parc de Princes when they met two weeks ago in France. Both clubs are tied at the top of the group with seven points each, but the Parisians are leading the Madridistas on goal difference. That, can only promises one thing- action-packed night at Bernabeu with Laurent Blanc and his charges all set to usurp Rafael Benitez’s side at home. Daniel Carvajal has not turned out for Real Madrid since he picked an ankle injury in the beginning of October. Pepe (muscular problem), James Rodríguez (thigh) and Gareth Bale (calf) are doubtful as well. Former Chelsea defender David Luiz is doubtful for PSG having sustained an injury on international break. The Brazilian, along with Marco Veratti are a booking away from incurring suspension. PSG will,
however, have Edinson Cavani, who has been in exceptional form and the match would offer an interesting sub-plot with Angel Di Maria returning to play against the club which he helped win the UEFA Champions League a couple of seasons back. Real Madrid are unbeaten in their last seventeen matches including 11 wins and six draws in all competitions, their last loss coming at the hands of Juventus in last season’s UEFA Champions League semifinals. Also, the Los Blancos have conceded on only four occasions in thirteen games this season. Paris Saint-Germain are formidable opponents, the Ligue 1 leaders being unbeaten this season in all competitions, winning 15 and drawing three of their seventeen fixtures. The Spanish and French powerhouses met for the first time in twenty years at Paris. Real Madrid look unstoppable currently but Paris Saint-Germain have twice knocked them out from Europe in 1992/93 UEFA Cup quarter-finals and 1993/94 European Cup Winner’s Cup quarterfinals. Rafael Benitez’s side would hope to avoid a repeat of history considering that PSG have edged out results even when they are less convincing. The Castilian side have the best defensive record in the Spanish top flight, with just four goals conceded in their 10 matches to date. Real have not lost a competitive match since their defeat to Juventus in the first leg of last season’s Champions League semifinal in May. The hosts are also on an eight-match unbeaten run against French opponents, winning five and drawing three. In England, Manchester United will host CSKA Moscow who drew 1-1 with them in Moscow last week. EPL leaders Manchester City who were saved by a penalty which saw them beat Norwich City 2-1 over the weekend will travel to Spain to face a wounded Sevilla who also lost 2-1 to Villareal in the domestic league. Borrusia Mönchengladbach, who beat Hertha Berlin 3-1 will entertain Juventus, the only team that last beat Real in the champions league.
Rosberg beats Hamilton in Mexican F1 race Nico Rosberg took his first victory in more than four months as he beat Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the Mexican Grand Prix. The German controlled the race from the start, with the new world champion only a couple of seconds behind, but was unable to get close enough to challenge. Rosberg’s fourth win of the season moved him back into second in the championship behind Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who crashed out. What was a largely soporific race for more than half the distance was enlivened by a potential intra-team controversy at Mercedes after Hamilton disagreed with a request for him to make a second pit stop. The team had planned to run the race on
a single stop, fitting the ‘medium’ tyres for a long final stint after running the first third of the grand prix on the ‘softs’. But with 25 of the 71 laps to go, Mercedes called Rosberg in for a second stop and then a lap later did the same for Hamilton. The world champion immediately questioned the decision, only to be told it was for “safety reasons” because the first set of tyres were “down to the canvas”. Hamilton clearly did not believe what he was being told, saying: “The tyres feel fine.” He was told he must come in: “This is an instruction.” But after returning to the track, he said to his engineer Peter Bonnington: “You’ve got to check those tyres, Bono.” And asked to be told what the result of that was.
Clearly annoyed, Hamilton started setting fastest sector times and began to close on his team-mate - only for the battle to be interrupted when Vettel crashed, bringing out the safety car. That bunched the field up, but Rosberg maintained his lead at the restart with 22 laps to go and was able to hold Hamilton off to the end. It was Rosberg’s first victory since the Austrian Grand Prix nine races ago and his fourth of the season, compared to Hamilton’s 10, and will be exactly what he needed after the disappointment of seeing Hamilton clinch the title with three races to go in the US a week ago, largely thanks to an error by the German.

Gor’s 1976 invincible hail new champions In 1976, exactly 39 years ago, Gor Mahia won the Kenyan Premier League unbeaten. A few players from the first invincible K’Ogalo’s squad were present at Nyayo National Stadium yesterday to witness the current squad led by poster boy Michael Olunga emulate the record set 39 years ago when they were crowned the 2015 Sports Pesa Premier League champions after beating Muhoroni Youth 2-1 in the last match. The 1976 living squad members James Ogolla “Kadir”, Maurice Ochieng “Sonyi”, Maurice Ouma “Ole Tunda” David Okello, Martin Ouma and Allan Thigo paid tribute to the champions. “This is a good feat for the team, they have not only repeated what we did, but have taken the trophy for good,” said Thigo who was player-coach in 1976. K’Ogalo, who are still in the race for a treble and unbeaten in all domestic competitions, became the
only club from Kenya to have won the league twice without conceding a goal. Attention will now shift to GOtv and Top 8 tournaments which if they lift, will make them the first club in Kenya to have achieved such a feat unbeaten. Frank Nuttal in his post-match interview hinted of the daunting challenges the team may be facing. “People see us winning matches, but most of them do not realise how much work, the physical and emotional effort it takes for the players to make that possible,” he said after the trophy handover. But while there was jubilation in Gor Mahia’s camp, there were surprises on both ends of the table. There were early signs that KCB will kiss the grass. What is strange though is how they managed to be relegated despite the huge financial backing they receive from the banks in comparison to Gor who has struggled throughout the season without a sponsor. Nakuru All Stars led the
journey back to the grass. It is not yet clear whether two or four teams will be relegated, if Football Kenya Federation (FKF) stick to their earlier position that four will have to leave the top-tier league and six promoted, City Stars and Chemelil will follow KCB and All Stars to the second tier league. Ushuru also surprised many when they finished fourth, above 10 times champions Tusker. Meanwhile, Tusker striker Jesse Were two goals in his sides 3-1 win over AFC Leoprads yesterday at Safaricom Stadium denied Olunga the golden boost. Were netted his 22 goals of the season, three better than Olunga who netted his 19th in his side’s 2-0 win against Muhoroni. Were’s unprecedented goal haul this season was aided by three consecutive hattricks which came against Chemelil Sugar, Sofapaka and Thika United and four penalties compared to Olunga’s two spot kicks.
