Jubilee MPs now ask President to sack Waiguru A
section of Jubilee MPs have now asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to immediately sack Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru. In a terse message contained in a press release today and signed by legislators allied to the Jubilee coalition, they said the minister should be sacked if she doesn’t voluntarily resign within the next 48 hours. The statement signed by 17 MPs mainly from TNA have also called on President Kenyatta to re-organize the executive in order to bring hope and confidence in the government. “We the undernamed, conscious of the constitutional demands humbly request our President to
crack the whip and sack Devolution CS if she doesn’t voluntarily step aside in 48 hours,” they said. Those who signed the statement include Kabando wa Kabando, James Gakuya(Embakasi North),Wanjiku Muhia (Nyandarua Women Rep), Benard Mutura (Makadara), John Njoroge (Kasarani), Aloise Lentoimaga (Samburu North), Humphrey Njuguna, Esther Murugi (Nyeri Town), Kanini Kega (Kieni), Mburu Kahangara, Patrick Ole Ntutu (Narok West), Samuel Gichigi (Kipipiri), Mithika Linturi (Igembe South), Kinyua Waweru, Peter Kamande (Maragua) and Muruaki. They said Ms Waiguru cannot continue to stay in office amidst the graft allegations surrounding her ministry. “She owes it to Kenyans to step aside failure to which the President should sack her,” the statement said. The leaders said that no one is
indispensable. The leaders said that State Officers must demonstrate respect for the people they serve, bring honor to the Nation, and bring dignity to the office they hold, promote public confidence in the integrity of the office and bear the responsibility to serve and not to rule over the people. While a majority of the legislatures remained tight lipped and denied that they had asked the President to sack Waiguru, Linturi confirmed that the statement was authentic. Waiguru has already defended herself against the corruption allegations levelled against her and has vowed not to step aside. She yesterday absolved herself from blame before the Parliamentary Accounts Committee saying she is not the accounting officer in the ministry.

OFF TO DAR: President Uhuru Kenyatta speaks with Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport earlier today as he left Nairobi for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania where he joined other heads of states and dignitaries in witnessing the swearing in of John Pombe Magufuli as the fifth President of the Republic of Tanzania. The President is seen here with First Lady Margaret, his deputy William Ruto (right), national Assembly’s Majority Leader Aden Duale, Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, Interior PS Monica Juma and Airport Authority boss David Kiamiyo.
Jubilee in frantic efforts to save CS Sharp but silent divisions have emerged in the ruling Jubilee after a meeting convened by the top leadership of the coalition in parliament to discuss the impending impeachment motion against embattled Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru ended in disarray. Fresh allegations of corruption have hit Ms Waiguru’s ministry, further fuelling the calls to have her impeached if she cannot step aside. Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter who is behind the impeachment motion yesterday announced that he had received an additional 41 signatures from colleagues to have the minister impeached, bringing the total number of signatures to 129, well above the required threshold of 88 to initiate the motion. The latest revelations which came to light on Tuesday have sent panic across the Jubilee coalition with MPs being mobilised to defeat the motion should it be tabled for debate. The new allegations which included inflated-price purchases have convinced more MPs to send the CS home, leaving the ruling Jubilee coalition in frantic efforts to halt the impending ouster. Mr Keter said he has already forwarded the signatures to the speaker and the motion could be debated as early as next week Tuesday. But Jubilee legislators were hurriedly called to a meeting to deliberate on the current events and look into ways of saving the CS. The session was to include a meeting with Ms Waiguru herself and top State House officials to
ensure the MPs are thoroughly briefed on the goings on. A text message sent to a Jubilee’s coalition WhatsApp group and seen by X-News; read “Honourable members we are meeting today afternoon at 4PM at Panafric Hotel to take a stand on CS Anne Waiguru, you are requested to attend without fail.” But several legislators allied to the URP wing of the ruling coalition failed to attend. Sources intimated that the party silently mobilised its members to boycott the meeting as some were dissatisfied with the manner in which it was hastily convened. Even Majority Leaders of both houses of parliament Aden Duale and Kindiki KIthure did not attend. They were however said to be in other meetings about the same matter. URP chairman Bare Shill (MP Fafi) and the party’s secretary General Fred Muteti were the only notable leaders who attended the late night meeting. Others were TNA MPs Moses Kuria (Gatundu South), Alice Wahome (Kandara), Cecil Mbarire (Runyenjes), Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete) Tiyah Gaigalo (Isiolo Women Rep), Ndung’u Githinji (Tetu), Mohammed Shidiye (Lagdera), Maison Leshomo (Samburu) and Nominated Senators Beatrice Elachi, Beth Mugo, Zipporah Kittony and Naisula Lesuuda. At some point, nominated Senator Zipporah Kittony and Mr Muteti left the meeting in unclear circumstances barely minutes
after they had checked in. In the meantime, their colleagues converged in small groups consulting as they waited for the arrival of CS Waiguru. The presence of State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu at the meeting confirmed the government’s interest in the matter. Sources said he was under instructions from the President Uhuru Kenyatta to deliver his message on his behalf. But he too left the meeting after passing over the message to the legislators shortly before Ms Waiguru arrived. After several hours of deliberations,
the Jubilee legislators’ majority drawn from The National Alliance Party (TNA) emerged from the meeting with Waiguru with no clear resolutions on the corruption allegations at the Devolution Ministry. Addressing the press later, the MPs led by Bare Shill alleged that Waiguru’s impeachment motion was a political issue geared towards the 2017 general election, while accusing the opposition coalition CORD of using it to malign Jubilee government. “We read malice and political conspiracy to bring down this government through falsehood and

propaganda, which as Jubilee we are ready to counter” the Fafi Mp said. He said that they would convene a press conference today afternoon to explain and prove that opposition are indeed responsible for Waiguru’ troubles.Already, the MPs have ejected Mr Keter from the coalition’s WhatsApp group. After the meeting, journalist tried to speak with Ms Waiguru but were met with resistance as the CS accused the media of being hostile and unfair to her “But you (Media) why must you follow me everywhere, aren’t you seeing that you are being inconsiderate to me” she paused.
Lawyers piecing up evidence on Waiguru ouster: says MP Keter Four lawyers are currently piecing together evidence that Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter will use to move his impeachment motion against Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru. Keter yesterday told reporters at Parliament Buildings that he has a team of lawyers currently working on the evidence and that Kenyans will be shocked once he tables the documents before the House. “I am not just talking without evidence, wait until next Tuesday or Wednesday and you will be surprised on the level of corruption I’m talking about in the Devolution ministry,” Keter said. “This is not witch hunt nor malice against the Cabinet Secretary, the lawyers are working on everything ready for presentation in Parliament next week, let the media help me in making Kenya a better place,” said the legislator. Keter said corruption is a national issue and his move to ouster Waiguru is not political but aimed at encouraging and protecting the taxpayers money. He also stated that it’s not only the Devolution that corruption is deeply entrenched but other ministries as well. “For now let me start at the Devolution ministry, but other ministries as well are corrupt and will be dealt with later,” he said. Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru has defended herself against the corruption allegations levelled against her and has vowed not to step aside. Waiguru yesterday absolved herself before the Parliamentary Accounts Committee saying he is not the accounting officer in the ministry and the correct people-the two principle Secretaries should be answerable to the claims being fronted. She told the committee that she is not responsible for any purchase made in her ministry as that is not her job as a Cabinet Secretary. However the Public Service Commission last year said Cabinet Secretaries have been given sweeping powers in their respective ministries to enable them take full charge of their ministries and improve output. Yesterday in her social facebook account, Waiguru said the barrage of allegations directed at her are no longer meant to tame corruption but now amount personal attacks.

Detectives grill PS Mangiti over Sh791m NYS cash theft Planning Principal Secretary Peter Mangiti today morning appeared before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives for questioning over theft of Sh791 million at the National Youth Service, siphoned through the IFMIS system. EACC director of communication Yassin Amaro told Capital FM News that Mangiti was summoned to shed light over massive corruption in the department. The anti-graft agency has since presented far reaching recommendations in a bid to seal corruption loopholes within the National Youth Service. Among the recommendations detailed in the Corruption Risk Assessment report, EACC wants an overhaul of key departments in the service, which includes Finance, Administration and Human Resource. The report exposed massive corruption in the procurement department, which has been accused of settling on the highest bidder while purchasing goods. Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru has since recorded a statement with the police over the scandal as directed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko. During the presentation of the re-
port on October 26, Waiguru said within one month, she will overhaul the departments identified in the report. She, however, made it clear that she recorded the report as the person who raised the red flag. “The recommendations are tough… one is a complete overhaul of the process and the system, we need to automate for example in terms of revenue collection,” she said. Other recommendations include, “building the human resource capacity, there are certain areas where we have inadequate staff. The recommendations are diverse. We will have to re-look on all of them completely.” EACC chief executive Halakhe Waqo, who released the report, said it is aimed at ensuring early detection of corruption, real time reporting and develop stringent disciplinary mechanism. The risk assessment report singles out poor financial management, procurement and internal audit systems as key ingredients to corruption at the State More on this department that has story at dominated news lately due to loss of hundreds of millions.

Poor referral facilities to blame for rising cancer cases Poorly structured referral facilities, inadequate diagnostic screening facilities and low awareness of cancer symptoms pose the greatest challenges against the disease, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director Prof Shaukat Abdulrazak has said. Abdulrazak underlined the need for enhanced infrastructure development in facilities for cancer and the training of more oncologists and other specialists in areas related to the disease. “Cancer research in Kenya is not commensurate with the magnitude of the problem basically due
to inadequate funding and training facilities in cancer research”, said Abdulrazak. He urged the government to invest in infrastructure development in medical facilities and training. Abdulrazak made the remarks when he met First Lady Margaret Kenyatta and held extensive discussions over the ravages of cancer in the country. Their discussions focused on the extent of the disease, and the challenges facing the war against the scourge. Mrs Kenyatta asked Kenyans to adopt health lifestyles including physical exercises and eat more traditional
foodstuff as compared to highly processed foods associated with some diseases. The First Lady, who is also is the current chairperson of the Forum of African First Ladies and spouses against Breast, Cervical and Prostrate Cancer, said Kenya will mark a major milestone when nuclear energy becomes available in the war against cancer. Top of FormBottom of FormCancer is now ranked the third killer disease among Kenyans after infectious and cardiovascular diseases. It is estimated the disease annual prevalence in Kenya currently
stands at 28,000 cases and the annual mortality at 22,000. According to the regional cancer registry at Kemri, about 80 per cent of reported cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, when very little can be achieved in terms of curative treatment. Abdulrazak said the few available cancer specialists are only concentrated in a few health facilities in Nairobi. “The need for radiotherapy is high in developing countries. Less than 40 per cent of patients in the developing world who need this live-saving treatment can access it today,” he said.
State to install cycling, footpaths to curb road carnage The government will construct designated cycling and pedestrians’ footpaths to curb the increasing incidences of road deaths. Latest statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicate that pedestrians’ deaths accounts for the highest numbers of road casualties. In the latest report by the agency, statistics
indicated about 1009 pedestrians’ death accounting to 43 per cent of the total fatalities, hence the need for designated footpaths and more footbridges on the highway. Transport ministry in partnership with Unep in the road programme, have called for a Non-Motorised Transport system in all counties which see footpaths and footbridges con-
structed at designated areas on the highways for pedestrians. NTSA Director General Francis Meja said the initiative will help in curbing pedestrians’ deaths in Kenya. The NMT has already been rolled out in Nairobi where about 50 per cent of the residents move by foot or bicycle. County roads chief officer Christine Ogut said major roads in Nairo-
bi have already been identified for the construction of NMT facilities. “The programme has also included the lighting of city roads which to be completed by June next year. The lighting of the City reduce pedestrian deaths especially at night as well as enhance safety,” she said. The current road transport system has incurred huge costs in air pollution, emissions
of greenhouse gases injuries and lost productivity from traffic congestion. The NMT further encourages walking and cycling which zero-carbon transport are resulting in less pollution and greenhouse gases. In addition to the health benefits, the NMT programme will reduce traffic in the Nairobi which has been a major challenge for the County.

NEWS BRIEFS Mexico court ruling now opens door to legal marijuana A narrow ruling by Mexico’s Supreme Court could eventually clear a path to make recreational use of marijuana legal. Four people in the Mexican Society for Responsible and Tolerant Personal Use will now be permitted to grow and smoke their own marijuana. Marijuana still cannot be sold in Mexico but some say the court’s ruling could lead to full legalisation. Mexico has long struggled with violent conflict from drug cartels. The advocacy group first brought the case forward in 2013, seeking permission to grow plants for recreational use. The court voted 4-1 that prohibiting people from growing the drug for consumption was unconstitutional. It could set a legal precedent for future rulings concerning the use and sales of marijuana. People celebrated the ruling by smoking joints outside of the Supreme Court building. “If ... this supreme court is taking such an important step toward legalization of drugs, or at least some of them, I suggest that we are equally careful and responsible in crafting a ruling of the same magnitude,” said Judge Jose Ramon Cossio, who voted in favour of the measure. There are tens of thousands of drug-related killings in the country every year. The country has been pressured to loosen its drug laws after the US made the drug legal in certain states. In 2009, Mexico made it legal to carry up to 5 grams (.18oz) of marijuana.
Dozens trapped in Pakistan factory building collapse A major rescue operation is under way to save dozens of people thought to be trapped in rubble after a factory collapsed and killed at least 17 people in Lahore, Pakistan. Two floors of the factory, in the Sundar Industrial Estate on the outskirts of the city, were operational, while a third was being built. “About 200 labourers are thought to have been in the building at the time of the incident”, said Jam Sajjad Hussain, a spokesman for the rescue services. “98 people had been pulled out alive and many were then taken to hospital. It was difficult to know exactly how many people were still trapped because the owner and administrative employees were among those inside the building”, he concluded. The cause of the collapse is still unknown. In September last year at least 24 people were killed in Lahore when the roof of a mosque collapsed.
Women agenda earns Kenya Commonwealth recognition
Kenya has been feted by the Commonwealth Businesswomen Network (CBW) for its bold approach stance as a beacon of hope for women across the Commonwealth countries in promoting empowerment across the continent. The award recognises the 30 percent access to Government procurement opportunities under ministry of Devolution and planning. The award comes at a time the Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning Anne Waiguru is facing public backlash over wanton corruption allegations in her ministry. The announcement was made this morning at the ongoing 11th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIFE) in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia and was received by the Kenyan Ambassador to Malaysia Samori Okwiri. In 2013, President Uhuru Kenyatta directed the National Treasury to issue regulations that provided that at least 30 per cent of all public procurement should be reserved for enterprises

owned by women, youth and persons with disability. The move was one of the Jubilee administration programmes to empower the youths economically and address the soaring rate of youth unemploy-
ment in the country. “The use of supplier diversity on this scale by a government to economically empower women, youth and persons with disabilities is simply unprecedented. Kenya’s development and advocacy
of public procurement as a lever for women empowerment has been pivotal on many levels, by 2015 over 8,000 women had benefited from public procurement preferences and reservation programme in various sec-
tors,” reads a statement sent to newsrooms this morning. The award recognises an impact across the whole of government providing opportunities to women across the country and in different sectors.
Cotu opposes pegging pay on performance A proposal by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to peg workers’ pay on performance has been rejected by the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu). The giant workers’ union has said civil servants cannot be measured in terms of productivity hence the move to peg their pay on performance would be unfair. In a statement signed by Cotu secretary general Francis Atwoli, the union says civil servants are not like factory workers whose productivity can be quantified at the end of the day and paid according to the output. “Any such attempts to dictate civil servants pay or productivity performance
will not be retrogressive but equally disastrous for the government as it has never happened anywhere including in developed economies like the US where performance contracting emanated and the phenomena remains solely in the private sector and among multinational corporations who hire people on specific terms to exploit and maximize on profits for their shareholders and at no one time can this be imported into a government democratically elected by the people as ours,” said Atwoli. He said pegging workers’ pay to performance would lead to low performance due to uncertainty that would cloud workers mind while performing
their duties. Giving a classical example of the Kenya Revenue Authority where low revenue was realised this financial year due to the move by the company to place all its officer under performance contract, Atwoli cautioned the government not to make the same mistake. “At KRA, performance contract lead to low morale that translated to low revenue collection as part of the tax collected end up into individual officers’ pockets due to the uncertainty that lies ahead of his/ her job as compared to a permanent and pensionable tax collector where upon such collections remained high,” he said. “Let the government not carry out such
ridiculous experiments in human resource management in a serious and such core sector as the civil service because this will eventually jeopardize and frustrate the badlyneeded services by wananchi and anybody pushing for such an agenda is a day dreamer out to ruin the future of this country,” said the Cotu secretary general. Atwoli said performance contract being fronted by SRC does not achieve positive results in all sectors and the salaries commission should process with caution over the issue. “This is a free advice from Cotu to SRC, they should stop misleading the government over the performance contract issue,” said Atwoli.
Bomb ‘might have caused’ Egypt jet crash Intelligence suggests the Russian plane that crashed in Egypt killing all 224 people on board may have been brought down by a bomb, US and UK officials say. “We have concluded that there is a significant possibility that the crash was caused by an explosive device on board the aircraft,” UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond. He said Britain was suspending all flights to and from Sharm el-Sheikh indefinitely and UK nationals already there would be helped to leave once
extra security measures were put in place. The move came during a visit to Britain by Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi. Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry called the UK response premature and unwarranted, telling the BBC that Egypt had taken “exceptional measures” to enhance security at Sharm el-Sheikh airport. Egyptian officials said the cockpit voice recorder of the Metrojet Airbus 321 was badly damaged in the crash. However, they managed
to extract information from the flight data recorder which is ready to be analysed by investigators, Egypt’s Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Hossam Kamal said. An unnamed US official told the Associated Press news agency that tentative conclusion had been reached, after intercepting communications, that an IS affiliate in the Sinai peninsula had planted an explosive device on the plane. Earlier, US media reported that a military satellite had detected
a “heat flash” over the Sinai at the time of the crash. It said data was still being analysed and that although the flash could have been caused by a bomb, a fuel tank or engine explosion was also possible. Egypt has dismissed claims by militants linked to Islamic State (IS) that they brought down the plane. Mr. Sisi, in a BBC interview on Tuesday, dismissed as “propaganda” claims that militants linked to IS brought down the aircraft.

Liquid Telecom rolls out free, unlimited Internet for traders Internet service provider Liquid Telecom Kenya last night recognised Kenya’s digital information entrepreneurs and offered to assist them in delivering local and original content for Kenya via the Internet, at an awards event at the Capital Club in Nairobi. The data company has made this possible through an initiative dubbed the ‘Information Enabler’ programme. “The inaugural Information Enabler programme speaks to the core of our vision at Liquid Telecom Kenya of creating economies where the Internet is absolutely transformatory and inclusive,” said Ben Roberts, Liquid Telecom Kenya CEO and one of the judges for the Information Enabler awards. The Liquid Telecom Information
Enabler programme will provide free, unlimited Internet usage and web hosting to core local content creators, as the opening point of a programme of support for Internet information entrepreneurs. The awards ceremony saw 10 winners announced out of 14 total entries. All entries displayed exceptional content and cover a range of themes. The entries included Healthadvisor (health), TechTrends, Techmoran, Mobitrends, Snorkel Interactive, Infinity Space (technology), Tezi Radio (entertainment) Soni Side Up, Cynosure, Blue Matte Digital (lifestyle), Buy Rent Kenya (real estate), Soka Holdings (local football), Boresha Limited (education) and Fountain TV Limited (streaming content).
GDC promises affordable power despite rig debacle
Recent challenges at the Geothermal Development Company (GDC) have led to a disruption of operations at the firm. The disruptions come at a time when Kenya is working to boost its power production in a bid to lower the cost of electricity. The crisis, which involves the irregular procurement of a drilling rig, had prompted President Uhuru Kenyatta to appoint Gershom Bw’omanwa as Chair to replace Faisal Abass. The GDC board has since sent home six of its senior managers, who include members of the GDC tender committee. The sex has been sent on compulsory leave to pave way for investigations. They include Godwin Mwawongo, Dr Peter Omenda, Praxidis Saisi, Abraham Saat, Nicholas Weke and Caleb Indiatsi. In a statement, Chairman Gershom Bw’omanwa said the board took the decision following advice from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) last week. “Following the EACC recommendation issued on October 29, the board has resolved that the senior management staff proceed on leave pending further investigations,” the chairman said. The board has in the meantime, appointed Paul Ngugi as the Acting Managing Director and CEO. Last week, EACC recommended charges against GDC Managing Director Silas Simiyu and the six for inflating drilling rig prices by over Sh146.8 million. “The board has not attributed culpability to the aforementioned staff pending conclusive investigations. The board is committed to offering leadership and guidance to the management and staff in order to ensure that GDC achieves its mission of delivering reliable and affordable power to Kenyans,” the chairman said.
Finalists were selected and judged by Ben Roberts, CEO, Liquid Telecom Kenya, Ochieng’ Rapuro, Managing Editor at Nation Media Group’s Business Daily, and Professor Akello Jalang’o, from the faculty of Electrical and Communications Engineering at Multimedia University of Kenya. “I was surprised to see that only one of the entrants was hosting its data and information (website) in Africa yet all were targeting information at an African audience,” Mr Roberts noted. However, he also expressed confidence in being able to change the trend for websites across the African continent. “I am glad that Liquid Telecom will be contributing towards bringing their hosting closer to their future customers, and

our own goal of keeping African data in Africa.” Liquid Telecom Kenya’s social entrepreneurship programme targeted content startups as a key and complementary goal beside its vision of providing the Internet to every African in order to promote economic growth and development. The programme is rooted in the group’s belief in the value of local online information

First Extensive Livestock Expo in Kenya to increase farmers cash Kenya’s first Mifugo Ni Mali Extensive Livestock Expo that aims at promoting the sector as a commercial venture that can earn farmers better incomes for their produce has been opened. Themed Herding for Markets, the Expo seeks to bring together extensive livestock producers and policy makers, financiers, buyers and other livestock value chain actors. The expo has brought together 1000 delegates, close to 100 exhibitors and 10,000 livestock producers from various parts of the country. “We intend to profile various investment opportunities in the livestock sector during the Expo, and showcase its potential to the stakeholders,” said the KCB Foundation Chairman, Catherine Kola. The expo, which was opened by Deputy President William Ruto, has been organised
by a consortium of partners including Kenya’s State Department of Livestock, KCB Foundation, AgriPro Focus, Kenya Markets Trust (KMT), Kenya Livestock Marketing Council (KLMC), SNV and University of Nairobi. It aims to promote a market-led approach and profile investment opportunities that unlock the sector’s potential by providing a marketplace for deal-making, place livestock as a priority economic growth sector for governments both at regional, national and county level and explore opportunities for enhanced livestock marketing during drought crises. The livestock sector plays an important economic and socio-cultural role among many Kenyan communities contributing to food and cash needs of the farmers while providing employment to over 10 million people in East Africa. The sector contributes
12 per cent of the total GDP which is 40 per cent of the agricultural GDP in Kenya. Representing the PS for Livestock, Prof, Ntiba, who is also PS for Fisheries, highlighted various challenges that hinder the sector’s development and competitiveness, leading to low productivity. These include: inadequate feeding and/or poor quality feeds, diseases due to open grazing and livestock movement systems, poor breeds, animal husbandry and inadequate enabling environment. Further, climate change has occasioned massive losses during droughts and the multiple market intermediaries depressing envisaged earnings of the livestock keepers. ‘’The fight against poverty through livestock upgrading initiatives in the country and the region demands huge investments ,’’ said the Deputy President William Ruto.
Japanese car maker faces Sh20b fine for exploding airbags Japanese firm Takata has been fined up to $200 million (Sh20 billion) by US regulators for the way it handled recalls of its controversial exploding airbags. Takata’s airbags have been linked to eight deaths and more than 100 injuries around the world. It was found they could inflate with excessive force, and spray shrapnel at drivers and passengers. The US-based National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Takata failed to provide information about the dangerous airbags.
Takata will initially have to pay $70 million (Sh7 billion), but the fine could reach $200 million (Sh20 billion) if the regulator finds any further violations. About 23.4 million Takata airbag inflators have been recalled in the US alone. Carmaker Honda also announced that it would no longer use Takata inflators in front airbags in its new vehicles, the BBC reports. The auto giant is Takata’s biggest airbag customer and has recalled 6.3 million US cars and replaced inflators on more than 40 per cent of them.
The fine is the largest ever issued by the NHTSA. “For years, Takata has built and sold defective products, refused to acknowledge the defect, and failed to provide full information to NHTSA, its customers, or the public,” said US Transportation Secretary, Anthony Foxx. “The result of that delay and denial has harmed scores of consumers and caused the largest, most complex safety recall in history,” he said.

Mombasa dares Nairobi in real estate hub title Mombasa has challenged Nairobi for the title of Kenya’s leading real estate hub. While many property investors favour the outskirts of the capital due to cheaper options outside of Nairobi, Kenya’s leading urban centre remains the location with some of the highest costing properties. Nonetheless, Mombasa is giving Nairobi a run for its money, according to a report by Lamudi, a leading authority on the region’s real estate market. “Kenya’s second largest city has a lot to offer, whether you’re a tourist, an investor, or a local. With a population estimated at over 1.2 million, it can hardly be considered a quiet coastal city,” Lamudi said in a statement. The city’s beauty has turned it into an attractive choice for tourists visiting Africa. North of the city, visitors are drawn to the Nyali and Bamburi beaches, which are a little more lively than their southern counterparts. To the South, Diani Beach hosts a number of luxury resorts and boutique hotels. Beaches in this area are known for their white sand and even boast underwater sandbars where visitors can enjoy
clear views of the seabed. Popular spots include Shelly Beach, and Tiwi Beach. Tourism is the main source of income in the area, however, as well as beauty, Mombasa also boasts a bustling economy, said Lamudi. It is a major trading centre within East Africa, thanks to the Kilindini Harbour, the country’s only sizeable seaport, which facilitates import and export to both Kenya and its
landlocked neighbours. According to the Kenya Ports Authority, cargo volume at Mombasa Port is forecast to grow by five to 10 per cent this year, as the economy and infrastructure in the region develops. The tourism sector is effectively pushing the development of the city’s real estate sector. As more people enter the city, hoping to enjoy the beaches, culture, and historical sites, the residential
and commercial real estate sector has grown in order to meet demand. New boutique hotels and upmarket luxury cottages are catering to the influx of visitors. In October 2015, house prices in Mombasa ranged from Sh1.9 million to Sh420 million. The latter figure can be used to purchase a five-bedroom house with six bathrooms, right on the creek while Sh135 milin begets a house on the beach in Kilifi.

Motorolla welcomes world’s first shatter-proof mobile display Motorola wants you to put down the prayer beads every time you drop your phone: Its new handset, the Droid Turbo 2, features a screen that can handle pretty much anything you can throw at it. Literally. Yes, you can now add “nearly unbreakable smartphone screens” to the list of humanity’s greatest accomplishments. So how did Motorola manage to make a smartphone screen that doesn’t break? Well, it all comes down to layers: Motorola constructed the Turbo 2 with five layers of material, starting with its aluminum core. On top of that, Motorola added a flexible AMOLED display, then a dual-layer touch sensor, an interior protective lens, and an exterior lens. Basically, the phone is equal parts flexible and rigid where it matters, and it has a plastic
screen. All of that makes for a display that Motorola says is guaranteed not to break for up to four years. But just because the Turbo 2’s screen is shatterproof, doesn’t mean its body is. In fact, the phone’s frame is far more likely to be damaged than its display. Strong and beautiful At 5.4 inches and with a super-high 2560 x 1440 resolution, the Turbo 2’s display is as sharp and clear as any top-of-the-line handset on the market. The Turbo 2 actually outclasses the iPhone when it comes to colours. That’s because the Droid Turbo 2 (like the Galaxy Note5) uses an AMOLED screen. Up front, there’s that 5.4-inch display. Above that sits a 5-megapixel camera with
a dedicated flash. Below the display is a pair of stereo speakers that pump out clean, loud audio. Around back you’ll find the phone’s 21-megapixel camera and its dual-tone flash. The Droid Turbo 2 boasts a powerful 8-core processor and 3GB of RAM, which means the handset won’t slow down when you’re running multiple apps. In terms of storage, the base version of the Turbo 2 gets 32GB of space for $624 (sh62400). You can also get the Turbo 2 with 64GB of onboard storage for $720 (sh72000). The handset lasts up to two days without needing to be recharged. Unfortunately, the Droid Turbo 2 still uses a micro USB charger, rather than the newer USB Type-C chargers. The Droid Turbo 2 runs Google’s Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system.
Bamburi launches mobile concrete testing laboratory In what is a first for the Kenyan construction industry, Bamburi Cement has introduced a Mobile Concrete Laboratory to enable its customers conduct on-site testing of materials and offer solid technical advice on concrete at various construction sites. The Mobile concrete laboratory, in which Bamburi Cement has invested more than Sh15 million, is fitted with state-of-the art equipment for conducting on-site tests. The laboratory offers flexibility and convenience to users who would otherwise have been forced to go to fixed concrete laboratories for tests.
This approach thus reaches out to a greater geographical sphere with regard to far off sites that have limited or no access to concrete testing facilities. The lab aims at ensuring that the quality of concrete and its constituent materials used at construction sites meet the specifications of standards stipulated by Kenya Bureau of Standards and requirements of the National Construction Authority which will ultimately result in overall improvement of construction and safety standards in the construction and building industry.
The mobile concrete lab will conduct onsite aggregate analysis, testing of fresh and hardened concrete as well as assess soil stabilization tests for road works. Customers will be able to know the quality and adequacy of their aggregates, sand and concrete mix designs. Users will additionally benefit from expert technical advice on concrete optimisation and best practices. “Bamburi Cement advocates for the use of quality materials in construction for in infrastructure and housing.
Facebook has reported an 11 per cent spike in profits in the third quarter of 2015, making $891 million (Sh91 billion) in net income for the period between July and September. The profits were driven by increased advertising sales, the company said in a statement. Facebook also reported strong user growth in developing markets, including Kenya. Investors have been waiting for signs that Facebook has made money from Instagram and WhatsApp, and for increased revenue from its video segment. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company was focused on innovating and investing for the long term. Facebook has said in the past it planned to grow advertising revenue on Instagram and Whatsapp organically, but investors have been anxious to see specific plans. The company, which is already the world’s largest social media site, reported it gained 60 million new monthly active users in the third quarter, bringing its global users to 1.55 billion.
Food maker sacks workers to save cash International food giant Kraft Heinz, the maker of well-known brands such as Heinz Ketchup, has said it is closing seven factories and cutting 2,600 jobs in North America in an effort to reduce costs. The cuts are in addition to the 2,500 workers in the region the company announced it would let go in August. Wednesday’s cuts will account for almost 6 per cent of its workforce and will take place over the next two years, the BBC reports. The two firms merged in a $46 billion (Sh4.7 trillion) deal in July to create North America’s third biggest food company. The cutbacks are part of the new company’s plan to save about $1.5 billion (Sh153 billion) in operating expenses by the end of 2017. The firm will close manufacturing plants in the US states of California, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, along with one in the Canadian province of Ontario. They account for nearly one-fifth of the company’s 41 plants in the continent.

Water project for schools feted at global congress THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2015
The International Transformation Foundation (ITF), a youth-led nonprofit organisation providing youth educational and self development programmes encompassing leadership and entrepreneurship, has been feted at the Global Awards for Fundraising, hosted by the Resource Alliance at its 35th International Fundraising Congress (IFC). The foundation, which was officially established in December 2009 by amalgamated youths across East Africa, was nominated for an award in the Netherlands last week under the Resource alliance International fund-raising conference. They then proceeded to win the award for their project ‘Join the Pipe’, under the ‘Big Impact Small Budget’ category, making it the only organisation in Africa to be feted with the other winners from India and Germany. Join the Pipe is a community financing project that helps schools set up water kiosks, which are then managed by students. It is collaboration between the ITF and the Join the Pipe Foundation in Amsterdam. According to the ITF, the water kiosks present multiple benefits for students, schools and the community, including creating money for Water Sanitation And Hygiene (Wash) activities in learning institutions. The project offers a repaid loan system that is redeployed to additional schools in need, thus
reducing the need for subsidies and dependency. “We increase school attendance as children no longer need to absent themselves from school to secure water for their families,” ITF told X News in a recent interview. The group added that the kiosks also offers a place for work experience, allowing students to learn about teamwork, commitment, leadership and responsibility. The ITF, which was formed in order to develop a system that provides jobs, offers security and gives people the opportunity to contribute to the
General Electric enters pact with media in energy, infrastructure development As part of a drive to increase media coverage in Africa of energy and infrastructure issues, General Electric (GE) Africa has joined hands with the African Media Initiative (AMI), a pan-African organisation that seeks to strengthen the continent’s private and independent media sector in order to promote democratic governance, social development and economic growth. The tech giant has made recent moves to bolster development in sub-Saharan Africa and hopes to draw support from the media in a bid to address infrastructure concerns in the region. So far, the group has focused on harnessing its global strengths to build sustainable local solutions, improve health and power the future. In partnership with Aeolus Kenya, GE is developing a
61Mega Watt (MW) wind power project in Kinangop. In Nigeria, GE is investing $1 billion (Sh102 billion), which includes the construction of a manufacturing facility in Calabar. Through the AMI programme more than 20 East African journalists have been offered basic training into Africa’s energy sector and have been enabled to use data from the sector to convey meaningful stories, GE revealed in a recent statement. “The initiative was part of GE’s efforts to support developmental journalism through capacity building,” said Director of Communications for GE Africa, Patricia Obozuwa. The training is set to explore the importance of covering the energy sector, and eliminating the weaknesses in covering of infrastructure and energy-related issues.
development of their communities, has seen its Join the Pipe project implemented in communities across the country, including Cheptais SDA Primary school in MT. Elgon, Jeankean Progressive School, the Maximum Impact Centre in Kayole, Simerro Primary School as well as Rangala Market Centre in Siaya. The Foundation was formed in a bid to address the youth unemployment crisis currently plaguing the East African region, due i part to the fact that youth of 30 years and below constitute about 75 per cent of East Africa’s population, forming
the largest human resource in the region. “However, many of them who are productive and energetic remain unemployed and continue to suffer from idleness’s social ills. Due to the growing sense of alienation felt by young men and women dropping out of schools to join gangs, violence and drug addiction as part of their everyday life where the future seems dark, poverty and unemployment being the norm,” added the International Transformation Foundation’s International Relations Assistant, Fridah Ndoro.
Co-operative Bank posts Sh12b profit Co-operative Bank of Kenya Ltd on today posted a 34 per cent rise in pretax profit for the first nine months of 2015, the lender said in an announcement released earlier today. The lender reported a pretax profit of Sh12.2 billion compared with Sh9.1 billion the previous year. The jump was boosted by costcutting that helped improve its costto-income ratio. Full-year profit was expected to be 28 per cent to 35 per cent higher than 2014, and could possibly even exceed those projections, Cooperative Bank Chief Executive, Gideon Muriuki said. Muriuki said there is likely to be a jump in comparative full-year profit as the cost of the lender’s staff restructuring programme dented final-quarter earnings in 2014. “We will do well in the third quarter and the last quarter (this year),” he told an investor briefing earlier today. The bank has planned a regional expansion drive after its South Sudan joint venture became profitable in the first nine months of the year. The announcement comes just days after the Bank partnered with SimbaPay, a digital money transfer provider, to offer international money transfer services to the bank’s customers in the Diaspora. The service is currently available for the UK-Kenya remittance corridor only and will be expanded to cover more countries soon. “Our customers will be glad to see their transfers being credited instantly,” Nyasinga Onyancha, CEO for SimbaPay commented.
Safaricom post Sh12.3bprofit as mobile penetration jumps Safaricom has recorded a massive total revenue of Sh97.2 billion for the first half of the financial year ending September 2015. This translates to Sh84.9 billion compared to Sh79.3 billion recorded the same period under review in 2014. Speaking today during the release of the Safaricom half-year results, Safaricom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bob Collymore numerated a number of achievements that have seen the company’s continued growth and stability. “In the period under review, our services revenue grew by 12.3 per cent to Sh 84.9 billion driven mainly by growth in our customer base. Core to this is to continue building the best network for our customers,’’ said Collymore. The growth geared by the high rate of mobile penetration in Kenya which currently stands at 83 per cent as at June this year, saw Safaricom record a subscriber share of 67 per cent.
However, messaging revenue and M-pesa revenue were other factors that attributed to the growth representing a Sh 8.0 billion and Sh 19.4 billion profit respectively. Other key strategies that scaled up the performance were Lipa na M-pesa which contributed Sh15 billion and mobile data revenue. Collymore said the firm continues
to partner with other companies to ensure as a major priority with plans to fiber to 1,000 buildings and 8,000 homes as well as enhancing fixed calling rates, cloud services and managed services a move that will further drive its profit up. Safaricom CEO said the telecom will continue to focus on improving its network quality coverage.

Did alshabaab recruit four missing Uni students? Four missing Moi University students are believed to have been recruited by Alshabaab. Hassan Waqo, Anthony Tirop, Michael Maina and another unidentified student are suspected to have disappeared and joined Alshabaab. The four are all fourth year students. This comes after National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC) announced in early June that Alshabaab has been eyeing University students for recruitment. “There are increased efforts to recruit University students, with Alshabaab targeting the brilliant ones,” said Isaac Ochieng, the NCTC chair during a counter terrorism conference in Nairobi. Efforts to counter radicalization in universities have seen the launch of a group called Universities and Colleges Students’ Peace Association of Kenya. In addition to this a pilot counter radicalization workshop in readiness for other workshops is to be held at USIU-Africa.

hanks to numerous photo filtering and editing apps available on our digital devices, social media has turned into an alternative universe where one can eradicate or conceal their imperfection using these tools to create the ultimate persona. Whether it is some booty boost, complexion enhancement or exaggerated personal profiles, the internet and especially social media has helped users achieve the coveted ‘best of both worlds’ where they get to be themselves in real life and their ideal self when they travel into the social media world. Perhaps this explains why the average elite human being owns up to five different social media accounts, spending 28% of their internet time on these networking sites alone. O’Neill, a popular Instagram user with over half a million followers has quit all social media after ‘seeing the light’, in this case the light being the reality that social media is not real life. The teenager who has been doing rounds on the internet confessed to having been drowning in a pseudo life, with the input of high profile companies who paid her to advertise their brands to her numerous social media followers. Essena explained her main reason for quitting social media as that it consumed her, and she was living in a 3D world, adding that these platforms serve no real purpose other than selfpromotion. Sounds drastic, quitting not just one but all social media, right? The problem with the internet age is that we have allowed our own creations to take control over our lives in a master-serve-slave sense.
Social media was originally intended for the purpose of preserving social relationships that were threatened by geographical barriers. Today, we have turned social media into a personal rate card, obsessing over likes and comments on statuses and photos and trading follows for follows. It is not about socialization anymore but as Essena puts it, for self-promotion. Although social media platforms have their benefits such as helping in spreading news and awareness and assisting users find likeminded individuals, spending hours in front of the mirror preparing for a social media ‘selfie shoot’ or refreshing a page every 5 seconds to monitor the likes on a post is no way to live and while using social media, we need to constantly pause and take reality checks. Well one teen just did and experts say, even that was just to promote herself!

Just relax and enjoy the company of your guests. They’re more interested in what you have to say than whether or not the house is spotless. TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 A call from a close friend or love partner could bring good news today. You’ll be so happy about it that you’ll want to get word out to everyone you know. This could involve romance or it might concern a creative project of some kind, perhaps involving writing and speaking. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 This could make your day. You won’t want to do much housework afterward. Don’t worry - the dirt isn’t going anywhere! Instead of feeling guilty about letting the housework go, go out and celebrate with a close friend or your partner. You deserve it. Have a great evening! CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 Perhaps you’ll spend it with a current or potential romantic partner, going to quaint places in your neighborhood. You could also hear from someone close that you may not have seen for a long time. A female author whose work you enjoy could publish a new book. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 Perhaps a friend who owes you could repay the debt, or you could get an unexpected opportunity to earn a little extra on the side. Romance should also go well, as both you and a current or potential romantic partner are feeling especially warm and sensual. VIRGO Aug 23-Sep 21 Love and romance blossom as a current or potential love partner comes on strong with passionate affection. This person could have a lot to say that catches you by surprise. In the past, communicating may not have been this person’s strength, but now it’s like there’s no stopping the flow of words. LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 Someone who may be something of a local celebrity might suddenly be attracted to you, although at this point neither one of you may be inclined to pursue it. Don’t expect much from this person beyond conversation, although this should be very stimulating now. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 Today you may be powerfully attracted to someone from a distant state or foreign country. The person may be highly educated and stimulating. You could find the conversation riveting. This person could be involved in the sciences, psychology, or perhaps metaphysics. SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 - Dec 21 Today you might be catapulted into the public eye in some way - and you won’t be very comfortable there! If you’re teaching, speaking, or leading a discussion group, it might be a good idea to seek the support of someone who has a stronger gift of gab than you. With help, you’ll be fine!

YOURSAY CS Waiguru should voluntarily leave office Besieged Devolution CS Anne Waiguru should take responsibility and resign. She must not wait for Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter’s impeachment motion. The incessant allegations of corruption in her ministry has not only crumbled her reputation but also the brave innocence she portrays. The broth in her pot is already spoilt. The allegations against her and the Devolution ministry raging from the 791 million NYS scandal to the latest procurement inflations in her office is a clear indication
of a leader not in control. The citizenry are crying foul of the runaway corruption and are irked by the President’s inaction. Waiguru has denied any knowledge of corrupt deals in the procurement procedures in the ministry and alleges that the buck stops with the Permanent Secretaries in her ministry. She is insincere. She seems to have forgotten that Last December President Uhuru Kenyatta transferred some executive powers from PSs to Cabinet secretaries. CSs were given greater
oversight over procurement in ministries, departments, parastatals and Statecontrolled firms, formerly the preserve of PSs. New duties included approval of work, procurement and cash flow plans, previously performed by principal secretaries. With a clear conscious she ought to have resigned long time ago, return stolen casjh, make a public apology to Kenyans and report to the next police station awaiting to be procured by the Lang’ata Women Prison. — Kamotho Nderitu
Kenyans need accurate information on cancer
There is an adage within the cancer community that any public lecture on cancer must have a generous serving of food, politics and science. Cancer survivors in any public forum always demand to be told which foods gave them cancer while the public wants to know which foods cause cancer. Though we cannot pin-point one single food item and
say it is responsible for all cancers, there is unequivocal evidence that unhealthy foods and drinks are among the key lifestyle drivers of the rising cases of Non-Communicable Diseases. The only way to promote healthy choices is to ensure science-based public health messaging on established lifestyle risk factors–obesity, inactivity, tobacco, alcohol,
unhealthy diets–is packaged in a way that is attractive to the youth so as not to lose ground to the plethora of inaccurate information peddled by national and multi-national food and drinks companies and perpetuated by sponsorships and advertisements. —David Makumi
Waiguru must take responsibility for the thievery Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru must step aside to pave way for investigations. Telling the nation in a statement that she does not procure, authorise purchases and do not have a Sh1.7 million TV set in her office is not proof enough that there was no wrong doing in her ministry. Victor Ponta, the Prime Minister of Romania has resigned over a deadly fire in
a disco that he had no idea of. As the PM, he has taken responsibility for corruption in the ministry that licenced the club. Similarly, corruption allegations against the Devolution ministry should be answered by the Cabinet Secretary. Waiguru must therefore come face to face with the reality and step aside. — Sunday Kennedy - Nairobi
Magufuli should ignore EAC leaders serve voters The newly-sworn-in Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli should only focus on improving the economic status of Tanzania and not engage in endless sideshows of the East African leaders. The delay congratulatory messages by Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta, Uganda’s Yoweri
Museveni and Paul Kagame of Rwanda to Magufuli is an indication that the leaders are hell-bent to exclude Magufuli in the East Africa Integration agenda. As Magufuli officially gets the instruments of power today, his focus should be to improve the lives of Tanzanians and not what the other East African leaders
think of him. As much as he cannot work in isolation of the other regional leaders, he should not bend to the wishes of other Heads of States at the expense of millions of Tanzanians who need his service. — Anonymous
Corrupt officers should be forced out of office Kenya has become a place where the chosen few are just after tapping public money and enrich themselves. Most public officers do not seek the positions to serve, but their sole aim is to amass wealth and get away. Bloggers and activists being some of the people who are
privy to the corruption in public offices, can do better by exposing the corrupt before they drain the country of cash meant for development and services. President Uhuru Kenyatta has also not done any better, by sitting back as his allies go on a looting spree. This
only confirms my suspicion that the President is part of the few out to loot from the public coffers. It is high time bloggers, activists and other civil groups rallied Kenyans against corrupt officials and force them out of office. —Enock ndayala, Nairobi.
ODM bid to impeach Rotich good, but bound to fail The idea mooted by the Orange Democratic Movement seeking to impeach Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich is bound to fail. ODM for instance is disadvantaged in terms of numbers in the National Assembly where tribal and party inclination have taken precedence to reasoning. As much as ODM might have a genuine reason to impeach Rotich over the Eurobond saga, the tyranny of number
being flaunted by the Jubilee Coalition will carry the day. Many of the occasions National Assembly has refused to reason beyond tribe and political inclination, a move that has watered down its main objective of being an oversight institution. It is only the public that should now stand up and be counted as almost all institutions have failed to live up to their expectations. — Anonymous

SPORTS BRIEFS Ronaldo, PSG coach talk fuels possible move to France
Christiano Ronaldo sparked fierce speculation about a possible move to Paris Saint Germaine after a tete-a-tete with PSG boss Laurent Blanc and chairman Nasser Al Khelaifi after their Champions League clash last night. PSG are confident they will beat Manchester United to the signature of the 30-year-old Portuguese, estimated to be about Sh10 billion in the transfer market. Blanc refused to reveal what Ronaldo said to him but Ronaldo even winked at Al Khelaifi in front of the media to emphasise their close relationship. Real President Florentino Perez was captured by TV cameras quizzing Ronaldo about an interview in which he claimed his future could lie elsewhere. The player looked bemused and sources said his touch-feely gestures towards PSG, with the world watching, after Real’s 1-0 Champions League victory were designed to rile Perez.
Tennis star, Serena thwarts restaurant phone theft incident Tennis star Serena Williams thwarted an attempted robbery by cornering a man who grabbed her phone in a restaurant. The American who boasts of 21 Grand Slam singles titles winner proved that she can defend herself on and off the court when he dashed down the man to recover her precious garget. “Yesterday at dinner the craziest thing happened to me,” the 34-year-old world number one posted on her Facebook page, accompanied by a picture of herself as Superwoman. Williams, who is taking the rest of the year off to recover from injuries, claimed the man “grabbed her phone and swiftly left”. “Not thinking I reacted, jumped up, weaved my way in and out of the cosy restaurant and chased him down.” Williams said she was “too fast” for the man and was “upon him in a flash”. She added: “In the most menacing, yet calm, nononsense voice I could muster, I kindly asked him if he ‘accidentally’ took the wrong phone.
Kipchoge Kenya sole athlete in prestigious IAAF award Kenya has only one nominee in the firsts round of the 2015 the International Athletics Foundation (IAAF) World Athlete of the Year award. Eliud Kipchoge is the sole representation for the world athletics powerhouse Kenya. Kipchoge earned the most votes in the road running category in the first round of voting. Kipchoge won the London Marathon earlier this year in a world-leading 2:04:42. The Kenyan then bettered feat when he won the Berlin Marathon in September in 2:04:00. Another African, Mare Dibaba also made it to the list. Dibaba started her year with a 2:19:52 victory at the Xiamen Marathon. After finishing second at the Boston Marathon, the Ethiopian went on to win the marathon title at the IAAF World Championships, Beijing 2015. Last month, the IAAF Family was asked to select nine men and nine women from each of the following categories: sprints, hurdles, middle and long distance, road running, race walking, jumps, throws, combined events and multi-terrain. The longlist will comprise the top-voted athletes in each category. The candidates from the other categories in the world athlete of the year voting will be announced over the coming days. An international panel of 10 experts will then select the finalists – three men and three women – the names of whom will be announced on November 17 and 18. From those finalists, IAAF council will select the male and female World Athletes of the Year.
Ex-national coach calls for unity among local volleyball coaches
French authorities to probe former IAAF boss over corruption French authorities have opened a criminal investigation into former IAAF president Lamine Diack for allegedly accepting money, several media are reporting. After being taken into custody, the former IAAF President was released on bail of approximately Sh56 million. He was ordered to turn in his passport and not leave France. Diack’s legal adviser, Habib Cisse, also faces a corruption charge, and Gabriel Dolle, the former director of the IAAF’s anti-doping department, has been taken into custody. The French judicial inquiry follows information received from the World Anti-Doping Agency in August and is being conducted by French financial prosecutors. Sebastian Coe, the new president of the IAAF, “talked freely, on its own initiative, with the police,” said Chris Turner, spokesman for the IAAF.
London marathon gold medalist Eliud Kichoge celebrates during a past event. He is the only Kenyan athlete who has been nominated in this year’s IAAF Athlete of the Year award.
Former national men volleyball coach Geoffrey Omondi addresses the media at a past event. He vowed to snub future appointments at the Kenya Volleyball Federation if they will not be long-term contracts.
Former National men’s volleyball head coach Geoffrey Omondi has vowed to snub future national team appointment unless it will be a long term contract. Omondi, who is the immediate former men’s head coach, said he will never return to the national team in any capacity without proper contract. Omondi, who was recently appointed the chairman coaching commission after he was replaced by Paul Gitau as the men’s team head coach in an interview with X-Sport said for volleyball to grow, coaches need to be given time to build a team. This he says, can only happen if they (coaches) sign long term contract with a future road map on what they want to achieve clearly spelt out in the contracts. “A coach should be given long term contract and given time to deliver that which if he fails, then a replacement is brought, but
not a one-time appointment for championship and another person is brought on board,” said the coach who is currently on the radar of Botswana Volleyball Federation for a possible takeover early next year. X-Sport Exclusively reported that Omondi is in talks with Botswana who are shopping for a coach for the country’s men’s team. Omondi at the same time is appealing to local coaches to form one body that will protect their interest. “We need to come together,” to have a voice and a platform from which our programmes will be implement,” Omondi told X-Sport in a lengthy interview. If he manages to bring his colleagues together, KVF will join Football which has a robust coaches’ body that fight for their rights. Omondi, who is also the current Cooperative Bank head coach holds level one coaching certificate

Host Bayern hit five past hapless Arsenal Arsenal faces a herculean task of qualifying to the knock out stages of Champions League after a humiliating 5-1 defeat in the hands of Bayern Munich 5-1 in a Group F match last night. The Gunners suffered a torrid first half as Robert Lewandowski’s header, Thomas Muller’s snapshot and David Alaba’s strike put the hosts 3-0 up. Arjen Robben’s first-time finish and a Muller breakaway strike came either side of Olivier Giroud’s volley. A record equalling European defeat leaves Arsenal six points behind Bayern and Olympiakos with two games left. The Greek side’s 2-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb, achieved via a 90th-minute winner, means that qualification is out of Arsenal’s hands and they are in danger of failing to reach the knockout stages for the first time in 13 seasons. Mesut Ozil had a goal ruled out for handball when the score was 1-0 and Arsene Wenger’s team improved after the break. Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny was ruled out with a hip injury hours before kick-off and his replacement, Gabriel, was partly at fault for two of Bayern’s three firsthalf goals and right-back Hector Bellerin also side-lined, the Gunners now have 10 players on the injury list. After defeats by Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiakos, the Gunners are attempting to become the first team since Galatasaray in 2012 to reach the knockout stages after losing their first two group games. Beating Bayern at home a fortnight ago gave Wenger and his boys optimism, but they must now make up a six-point gap to second-placed Olympiakos, whom they must beat in their final group game on December 9, but before that, Arsenal must beat Zagreb and hope that Olympiakos loses their match to Bayern to set up an intriguing final match in Greece where the Gunners would have to beat Olympiakos by two clear goals after conceding a sloppy winner in their 3-2 defeat at the Emirates
on September 29. Chelsea eased the pressure on manager Jose Mourinho as Willian’s brilliant late winner gave them a crucial victory over Dynamo Kiev at Stamford Bridge. Mourinho has suffered with the defending champions a desperate 15th in the Premier League table. And he looked to be heading for more frustration as Aleksandar Dragovic made amends for his first-half own goal by taking advantage of keeper Asmir Begovic’s error from a corner to equalise with only 13 minutes left. Chelsea’s fans - who noisily supported Mourinho throughout - may have feared the worst, but Willian responded in style with a spectacular 25-yard free-kick six
minutes later. The win moved the Blues into second place in Group G, three points behind leaders Porto but now with a two-point cushion to Dynamo Kiev. Holders Barcelona took a big step towards the knockout stages with a comfortable 3-0 victory over BATE Borisov. Brazilian forward Neymar scored twice for the home side, including a penalty, with fellow striker Luis Suarez toe-poking in on the hour mark. Roma picked up their first win of the group stages with a 3-2 victory against Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. Mohamed Salah and Edin Dzeko were both on target for the Italians
Bayern Munich defender David Alaba celebrates scoring his side’s third goal against Arsenal at the Allianze arena last night. Bayern thrashed the Gunners 5-1.
KLOPP SEEKS FIRST Europa WIN after beating chelsea in EPL Jurgen Klopp will face Rubin Kasan for the second time since taking over as Liverpool manager in a Europa League tie at Rubin Kazan tonight. Klopp replaced the sacked Brendan Rodgers early October and took charge at Anfield with his first game being Rubin. Striker Christian Benteke, who has made three substitute appearances since returning from injury will lead the attack for Liverpool. Youngsters Pedro Chirivella, Cameron Brannagan and back-up goalkeeper Ryan Fulton have also travelled to Russia. Midfielder Joao Teixeira is ineligible and defender Connor
Randall, who made his senior debut against Bournemouth last week, has not travelled. Klopp has adopted contrasting selection policy to predecessor Brendan Rodgers, who left six senior players at home for their first Europa League trip. Rodgers’ youthful side earned a 1-1 draw at Bordeaux in September, before another much-changed team also drew 1-1 against Swiss side Sion at Anfield. The German named a strong side, which was held to another 1-1 draw, and looks set to do the same in the return fixture. Second-placed Liverpool trail leaders Sion by four points, and are
one ahead of Rubin. After today’s match in Russia, Liverpoolwill host Bordeaux on November 26 before a trip to Sion in their final game on December 10. Celtic will take on Molde at Celtic Park in a crucial Group A fixture. Molde beat the Scotts 3-1 last month, but the Hoops who are yet to win in the Europa League so far this season and are currently rooted at the bottom will be aiming to kick-start their campaign. Their domestic form has been far more consistent, with Ronny Deila’s side winning their last four in the Scottish Premiership, helping them to stretch their lead at the top of the table to six points

Olunga’s brace sends K’Ogalo to Top 8 final
Gor Mahia will face Sony in the Top 8 final after Michael Olunga scored two second-half goals against 10-man Tusker FC in a semi-final match at the Nyayo National Stadium last night. Tusker stand-in coach Geoffrey Odipo has blamed centre referee Amos Ichingwa for his team’s loss after he sent off Clifford Alwanga for a second bookable offence six minutes to the break. Ichingwa red-carded Alwanga, after he was judged to have elbowed Khalid Aucho. “It is possible to get a result when playing against Gor Mahia when you are 11 men, but when your side is a
man down, from a mistake that doesn’t look punishable you are finished,” he said. It is not yet clear whether any action will be taken against Odipo for undermining the integrity of match officials. Gor seemed headed for their first defeat in a season before Olunga came to their rescue. K’Ogalo will play Sony Sugar who booked their maiden final from a convincing 3-1 win over Sofapaka in the earlier semi-final match. The crunch final that will pit both men in green and brothers from the Lake will be held this Saturday, November 7 at
Moi Stadium, Kisumu. Gor will go into the final in search of a third title after the DST Cup, SportPesa Premier League which are already tacked in the cabinet. Kevin Kimani tapped in from Jesse Were cross to give Tusker the lead, but Gor took advantage of their numerical advantage to pile pressure on their opponents. Olunga beat defenders to send home an equaliser just nine minutes into the second half before grabbing the second goal. Sony beat Sofapaka 3-1 to reach the final after a two all draw in the first leg.
